Breaking Down the Best Hair Moments at the 2018 Emmys

We are all about that hair — and makeup too! Here at Stylish, we’ve never seen a hairstyle or makeup trend we couldn’t talk about for days on end, so we started a podcast to dish on all the latest beauty news — from hits and misses on the red carpet to celebrity hair and makeup gurus’ dos and don’ts. Each week, Us Weekly beauty director Gwen Flamberg talks with some of the best in the biz about what’s new in hair, makeup and style in our Get Tressed With Us podcast. Listen above!

This week, Gwen, Us Weekly deputy beauty and style director Beth Shapouri and senior reporter Travis Cronin welcomed celebrity hairstylist Tommy Buckett (i.e. Elisabeth Moss’ mane man) to talk about all the best beauty looks from the 2018 Emmys red carpet.

Earlier this month, Buckett called into the podcast to offer his Emmys predictions and tease the fact that Moss would debut a hot new ‘do at the awards ceremony. As it turns out, the Handmaid’s Tale producer and actor bumped up her blonde locks just before the ceremony to a color Buckett describes as “lighter and brighter,” and her whole Emmys vibe was a lesson in Old Hollywood glamour.

Rocking a curve-hugging black Vera Wang mididress, Buckett explained that he was inspired by the “vampy,” “La Dolce Vita meets bad Sandy” feel of the frock and opted to create bombshell waves.

Instead of using a curling iron to sculpt the glossy bends, he set the hair with bobby pins and a round brush before adding heat with his Dyson dryer (we’ve got a step-by-step guide to recreating the look!). Paired with a glowing skin and a vibrant red-orange lip, Moss’ sultry glam would have made silver screen sirens like Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield proud.

For more of the week’s hair and makeup news — including the Stylish team’s favorite hair moments from the 2018 Emmys — make sure to listen to the full podcast above and subscribe!

Breaking News: Surfrider Announces Lawsuit Filing Against the IBWC

San Diego, Calif., July 17, 2018 – The Surfrider Foundation announced that today it will file a citizen suit against the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC). The lawsuit is based on the USIBWC’s failure to comply with water quality standards, in addition to critical monitoring and reporting requirements in violation of the Clean Water Act.

The Surfrider Foundation, which has been an active stakeholder on the border sewage issue for over a decade, sent the USIBWC a 60-day Notice of Intent to Sue (NOI) on May 15, 2018. The USIBWC did not respond to the NOI or Surfrider’s position that the USIBWC’smismanagement and inaction on trans-boundary contamination has resulted in beach closures, the reported human illnesses of residents and Border Patrol agents, negative implications for local businesses and the contamination of the Pacific Ocean.

“The Surfrider Foundation has followed the established procedure for making public and officialits complaints that USIBWC is in violation of the federal laws governing local water quality standards, including giving them an opportunity to respond and offer ways to mitigate theproblem,” said Daniel Foster, partner with the international law firm representing the Surfrider Foundation, McDermott Will & Emery. “Because of USIBWC’s continued inaction on this issueand the resulting impact on local communities, Surfrider has decided to take further action on

behalf of its members and supporters in Southern California.”

Trans-boundary border sewage flows, unknown chemical pollutants and an increase in plastic debris traveling through the Tijuana River Valley have plagued South San Diego County for

decades. In February 2017, failures of the Mexican sewage infrastructure caused an estimated 143 -240 million gallons of raw sewage to travel through the Tijuana River Valley and onto local beaches. This event affected hundreds of Imperial Beach and Coronado residents who have been forced to live with contamination affecting their homes, neighborhoods, favorite beaches and open spaces. To date, no long-term solutions have been proposed to remedy the sewage problem on the U.S. side of the border. There also haven’t been any attempts to remediate the area that was affected in February 2017.

When Imperial Beach resident and co-founder of the South Bay Clean Water Movement, Shannon Johnson, was asked about the lawsuit, she stated that The Surfrider Foundation has consistently played an active role on the border sewage issue, most recently opposing the construction of a campground in the Tijuana River Valley until the sewage issue is addressed and the area cleaned.

The USIBWC is a federal government agency with the mission of providing solutions regarding sanitation and water quality in the border region. The USIBWC has failed to achieve their mandate and has continually allowed flows of untreated raw sewage, chemical pollutants or plastic pollution to enter the Tijuana River Valley. The community has waited for solutions to this increasingly dangerous problem and the Surfrider Foundation is now suing to compel the USIBWC to act.

Bryan Cranston Used to Pull the Most Walter White Prank on Aaron Paul During Breaking Bad

Not only did Aaron Paul dress his baby daughter up in a mini hazmat suit for Breaking Bad‘s 10th-anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, but he also regaled fans with a hilarious behind-the-scenes story from the award-winning drama.

After explaining that showrunner Vince Gilligan had told him that the writers originally planned to kill off Jesse at the end of season one, Paul revealed that co-star Bryan Cranston frequently used this information to convince him his character was done for.

“He came up to me the first time he did it and just gives me a really long, exaggerated hug. He’s just not letting me go [and I’m like], ‘What’s going on?’” Paul said. “He’s like, ‘Hey, man, it’s been a fun ride.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He’s like, ‘I thought you read the script, right?’ [I was like,] ‘No.’ He’s like, ‘Oh,’ and then he just walks away. And I run into the production office, and I’m like, ‘Where’s the script?!’ And they’re like, ‘It’s not available yet,’ and I’m like, ‘Please, god, tell me.’ And then I read it and I was alive still.”

Paul went on to recount another instance where Cranston pranked him into thinking Jesse was not long for this world.

“There was another time where they did a fitting [and said], ‘We need to measure you for the coffin.’ [I’m like,] ‘A coffin?’ And they’re like, ‘Oh, you don’t know about it?’

[Breaking] Al Sharpton Blasts Supreme Court Decision to Uphold Muslim Travel Ban

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled to allow the Trump administration to continue a travel ban restricting entry from seven countries including Iran, North Korea, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, and Venezuela, reports CNN and other news outlets.

Rev. Al Sharpton condemned the ruling through a statement released by the National Action Network:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision marks another outrageous step backwards for religious and racial justice around the world. The Supreme Court’s decision to the anti-Muslim bias clearly apparent in this policy is unfathomable—the ban is rooted in islamophobia and has been phonily sold to the American public for the sake of ‘security.’

“Trump has made it clear time and time again he wants a migration ban on individuals from all Muslim countries. We at NAN have no patience for the ongoing efforts by this administration to undermine religious freedom, a basic building block of our nation. We will push back at every step and every available juncture on any whiff of intolerance and prejudice.”

Since early 2017, the administration has attempted to enact a travel ban against mostly Muslim nations, several times. Each time, the action was struck down by federal judges, reports ABC News. The latest ban, which is the one the court upheld, was the result of a signed Executive Order in September.

The ruling comes on the heels of a week of outrage and protests over the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy. The administration began prosecuting as many people crossing the border as possible. Many of these migrants cross the border with children. The Washington Post explains, when the adults are prosecuted, they are taken into Department of Homeland Security (DHS) custody. The children are separated from the adults, their parents, in most cases, and are placed in internment centers or “tender age” shelters since children cannot be detained by DHS.

With much of the public outraged over the detainment of children, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order to stop the separation of children and parents but said zero-tolerance would continue.

[Breaking] San Francisco Now Has Its First Black Woman Mayor

London Breed will be the first black woman mayor of San Francisco after her opponent conceded the election results, reports CNN.

Breed claimed victory after her opponent, Mark Leno, a former California state senator, conceded in a tight election race. Breed and Leno battled for the position after the untimely death of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, who died from a heart attack in December 2017.

African American women have been particularly energized in the 2018 election season. Stacey Abrams recently made history as the first female gubernatorial nominee for any major party in Georgia.

And in December of last year, African American voters showed up in massive numbers at the voting booth on Tuesday, helping Democrat Doug Jones defeat Republican Roy Moore for the U.S. Senate seat.

According to exit polls by The Washington Post—African Americans voted almost unanimously for Jones. The Democrat received 96% of the black vote. Jones was particularly helped by black women; receiving 98% of their vote. And 93% of black men voted for him. Still, it was a tight race with Jones receiving 50% of the overall vote versus Moore’s 49%..

Additionally, many grassroots initiatives have sprung up to get more people of color involved in politics.

These little baby milestones are breaking this new mama’s heart

by

Jamie Reed

posted in Parenting

This morning I woke up to baby giggles. Not dream whimpers, not cries of discomfort, not even yells of hunger. Just sweet baby giggles and chatter. My 5-month-old was awake and was entertaining himself until I woke up. As precious as it was, I couldn’t help but feel a tiny twinge of sadness at the sight of my happy baby boy. He looked so big.

smiling baby

What was once a little baby (as little as an almost 9-pound baby can be), is now growing into a kid, and it’s so strange to see these changes take place. I’m certainly not complaining about my wake-up call, but it’s all a little hard to take sometimes.

There have been the milestones we were expecting, like sleeping through the night and rolling over for the first time, but there have been so many others, little skills and actions, otherwise insignificant moments that have surprised me and reminded me that my baby is growing up.

baby feeding himself with bottle

It’s in the way his tiny hands now reach up to hold his bottle. Those little hands that love to grasp my fingers and play with my hair, now are figuring out how to feed him and attend to his own needs.

The way he now pushes his legs to stand up. He grunts and groans until he’s up in the air and then grins so proudly. It’s adorable and wonderful and terrible all at once, this independence he’s longing for.

When he loses his pacifier but quickly finds it again, all on his own.

When he cries in the night but comforts himself before I can even reach for him, putting himself back to sleep.

All things he should be doing. All things I wanted him to do. All things that at some point in the middle of the night when he was a newborn I hoped and prayed he’d figure out so we could all sleep and function one day.

All things that are now slowly breaking my heart a little.

No one told me about these little milestones. The ones you don’t write down in the baby book, or even photograph. But I guarantee you, the first time I saw him hold his bottle on his own is forever etched in my memory.

These moments are so bittersweet. Of course I want him to grow and develop, and become more independent of me. But each new skill, each new milestone, is one step closer to my baby not being a baby anymore.

Everyone told me how fast time would go. How “the nights are long, but the years are short.” How right they were, and we’re just getting started! I blinked, and my little baby got not-so little anymore.

We’ll be approaching the 6-month mark soon. He’ll turn a year old in a heartbeat and I’ll blink a few more times to see he’s graduating high school and leaving my care. Which is just how it should be. But I think I’ll rock him a little longer tonight, just the same.

Breaking Bank: How Bankruptcy Affects Inheritances and Estate Plans

Bankruptcy affects hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. In 2017, the United States Courts reported that there were 796,037 bankruptcies filed in that fiscal year—only a 2.8% decrease from the total reported in 2016 (819,159).

With bankruptcy being such a common occurrence, it leaves many Americans a little shaken and concerned about how major debt can affect many aspects of their lives including their estate plans.

In this post, we’ll break down some basics of bankruptcy and explain how it affects inheritances and estate planning.

What is Bankruptcy?

Bankruptcy is a financial and legal term that refers to when an individual, business, or municipality has so much debt that they must petition the United States Bankruptcy Court to erase their debt. The court rules the petitioner as insolvent (which means they are unable to pay back creditors because their debts or liabilities exceed their assets), and then the petitioner will either liquidate their assets or create a repayment plan with an economic advisor to pay off their debts.

Bankruptcy is governed by federal law, and the cases are filed in the United States Bankruptcy Court. However, state law is usually applied to issues involving property rights, so many systems can be at play.

When someone is declaring bankruptcy, a petition is filed under one of the chapters of the Bankruptcy Code, which acts as a framework for providing economic relief and determining how the claimant’s debts are settled.

There are nine chapters of the Bankruptcy Code (although they are not numbered 1 through 9). Typically, an individual claiming bankruptcy (also known as a debtor) will file under:

  • Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code, which relieves the debtor through liquidation (the sale) of their assets to pay back creditors
  • Or Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code, which provides relief through adjusted debts (usually allowing a debtor to keep some property) and a payment plan that allows the debtor to pay back creditors over 3 to 5 years

When the debtor meets all the requirements of their bankruptcy filing, they will receive a court-ordered bankruptcy discharge that relieves them from their obligation to pay their debts. Having debts discharged prevents creditors from continuing collection actions on those specific debts again (this includes calls, letters, and civil suits).

Does Bankruptcy Affect Inheritances?

Bankruptcy can, and often does, affect inheritances as long as the debtor inherits property or money while they are in bankruptcy.

When an individual files for bankruptcy, a bankruptcy estate is created. The estate (under the control and protection of the Bankruptcy Court and an appointed bankruptcy trustee who acts as an administrator for the estate) is considered the temporary legal owner of the debtor’s assets and property. The bankruptcy estate’s ownership over the debtor’s assets can extend to any additional assets the debtor receives while he or she remains in bankruptcy, including inheritances.

How inheritances are affected can depend on which chapter of bankruptcy the individual has filed under. Since many people file under Chapter 7, where their assets are sold off to pay back creditors, the inheritance is usually lumped into that process.

For example, if a debtor receives $ 30,000 from the residue of their parent’s estate, it will act as a lump-sum payment to be subtracted from the debtor’s total debt. Likewise, if the debtor was left valuable property like a car, it would be liquidated for cash and then paid to creditors.

Will an Inheritance Always Be Used to Pay Off Bankruptcy Debt?

The timing of an inheritance is very important when it comes to whether or not it will be used to pay off a bankruptcy debt. An inheritance might not always be claimed by the bankruptcy trustee to pay off the insolvent’s debts. In a Chapter 7 claim, any inheritances received 180 days after filing will remain the property of the debtor and not the property of the bankruptcy estate.

In a Chapter 13 filing, the time elapsed after filing might not matter, as the judge can choose to take your inheritance into account to amend your repayment plan. This is because a large inheritance could be considered a significant increase of income thereby increasing your ability to make higher payments.

It should be noted, however, that whether or not an inheritance is used to pay off someone’s bankruptcy debt is dependant on when the decedent (the person who named the debtor as an heir in their Last Will and Testament) passed away, not the date the inheritances are distributed. To be specific, if the person leaving the inheritance dies within 180 days of the debtor filing for bankruptcy, the bankruptcy estate will replace the debtor as the beneficiary in the Last Will.

For example, if John claims Chapter 7 bankruptcy on January 1, and his aunt (who’s leaving him her $ 150,000 home as an inheritance) dies on June 30 (exactly 180 days later), John’s $ 150,000 home inheritance will be liquidated for cash and used to pay off his debts. Even if his aunt’s Last Will is tied up in probate court for over a year and he gets his inheritance after, the money will still go to the bankruptcy estate because his aunt died within the 180-day limit.

How Does Bankruptcy Affect My Estate Plan?

If you’ve created a Last Will and Testament as part of your estate plan, you will have left specific instructions as to how your assets will be distributed (and to whom) once you pass away. Of course, what happens to your property and assets upon your death depends on how much debt you’ve accrued.

Your debts will always be paid first before your beneficiaries receive any inheritances or gifts. That means that if you pass away in the midst of a pending Chapter 7 filing, your assets will be liquidated until your creditors are paid off. Only then will your beneficiaries see any inheritances from what’s left of your assets (known as the residue of your estate).

If you’ve filed under Chapter 13, however, things can get a little complicated because the debtor must actively participate in the proceedings by making payments for 3 to 5 years. Usually, if the debtor dies, the survivors and the estate trustee will decide what to do and petition the court for a course of action.

Typically, the courses of action that the administrator and survivors can take after a bankrupt debtor dies are:

  • Asking for the case to be dismissed
  • Petitioning for a hardship discharge (where the court discharges the debtor since they’ve passed away)
  • Asking to convert the case to a Chapter 7 filing (and then liquidating the estate until the bankruptcy terms are satisfied)
  • Continuing the case as normal

Keep in mind that these are requests of the court and the final decision will be left to the judge presiding over the case. The judge will approve the course of action that operates in the best interest of all parties.

When Navigating Bankruptcy, Use the Resources at Your Disposal

Declaring bankruptcy can be a stressful time for anyone, especially when it affects the possibility of future income from inheritances or the livelihood of your beneficiaries. Try to remember that you are not alone in the process.

The main thing you can do in the midst of bankruptcy is keep yourself informed about how your assets and future income might be affected. Don’t be afraid to ask your bankruptcy estate trustee for advice and try to keep in mind that you and your trustee are a team as you go through this tough time.

Have you dealt with bankruptcy or major debt before? What was your experience?

Are Cheryl and Liam Payne breaking up, are they married and what really happened at 2018 Brit Awards?

CHERYL and Liam Payne went public with their romance in 2016 and welcomed baby son Bear in March 2017.

After it was revealed their relationship was in crisis, the couple put on a united front at Tuesday’s Brit Awards. Yet just 24 hours, Liam left Cheryl to fly to Miami. Here’s the lowdown on what’s going on..

Could Cheryl and Liam really be about to split?

Less than 24 hours after putting on a united front at the Brit Awards 2018, Liam was back on the road again and jetted out to Miami – leaving Cheryl and baby Bear at home.

The couple had walked the red carpet together at the awards bash on Tuesday, despite their relationship crisis.

Cheryl was there to support boyfriend Liam Payne who performed his song For You from the new Fifty Shades Freed film on stage with Rita Ora.

The couple were interviewed at their table by host Jack Whitehall during which Cheryl jokingly revealed her ‘safe word’.

Later on the presenter made a cheeky quip about Liam and Rita’s hot ‘chemistry’ after a steamy performance.

However, on February 18, 2018 The Sun on Sunday revealed that despite holding crisis talks about the future of their relationship, pals fear the showbiz couple could be on the verge of splitting.

The 10-year age gap between the two and Liam’s pursuit of a solo career are the main reasons believed to be behind the rumours.

A source close to the couple revealed: “There’s a big age gap between them. If they didn’t have Bear then they would have most likely split up by now.

“But they love their son. And they do care for each other so it’s now a matter of seeing if there’s a final way forward to try and make it work.”

What were the marriage rumours?

In May 2017 Liam sparked rumours he and Cheryl had secretly wed after he described her as his “wife” during a US radio interview.

Meanwhile, Cheryl, 34, has already been married twice before, and according to OK! Magazine, “doesn’t want a circus” if and when she weds Liam.

In July 2017 Liam was forced to finally admit that he hasn’t married Cheryl, saying he merely refers to Cheryl as “the Mrs” in a colloquial sense.

Liam subsequently hinted he may never marry Cheryl as he says “weddings aren’t for him”.

Who was Cheryl married to before?

The former Girls Aloud singer first tied the knot with footballer Ashley Cole in 2006 but the couple split in 2010 following allegations Ashley had been unfaithful.

Their divorce was granted in September of that year.

Cheryl then went on to marry businessman Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini in July 2014 after a whirlwind three-month romance.

However the marriage fell apart and after months of speculation, the split was confirmed in January 2016 and the couple were granted a decree nisi in October.

The singer was also married to Frenchman Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini from 2014 until she filed for divorce in January 2016

Who did Liam date before meeting Cheryl?

Being 10 years younger than Cheryl, Liam doesn’t have quite the relationship history of his girlfriend but did have some significant relationships before they got together.

The singer dated dancer Danielle Peazer from October 2010 until May 2013.

He then quickly moved on to a new relationship with Sophia Smith, who he had known since primary school.

The couple dated until October 2015, just weeks before he got together with Cheryl.

How did Cheryl and Liam Payne meet?

The pair first met all the way back in 2008 on the set of the X Factor, where 14-year-old Liam’s first audition earns him praise from his future partner, as well as calling him “cute”.

Liam returned to the show in 2010 as a 16-year-old and became part of One Direction, impressing Cheryl with his talents once again.

The pair are believed to have become a couple in December 2015 after One Direction performed on the X Factor for the final time, with the couple snapped sharing a hug and dancing together.

The Sun then exclusively confirmed their relationship in February 2016.

The pair first met in 2008 when Liam, then 14, auditioned for The X Factor and winked at her

What have Cheryl and Liam Payne called their baby boy?

The Sun revealed on May 1, 2017 that the couple named their son Bear after spending a week getting to know him.

Baby Bear also took his One Direction star dad’s surname.

A source revealed: “Cheryl and Liam wanted to get to know their baby before deciding on a name.

“They didn’t have the name Bear before the birth.

Instagram

“But they’d been thinking of a name since meeting him and they just felt it suited him.

“They love their little baby Bear Payne and are truly over the moon and loving being parents for the first time together.”

Liam has opened up on “making a human” with Cheryl – calling it his proudest achievement.

Has Cheryl changed her name back to her maiden name?

Cheryl’s surname has changed many times over the years, due to her being married twice.

First she was Cheryl Tweedy (her maiden name) , then she changed it to Cheryl Cole when she married Ashley Cole, then she was Cheryl Fernandez Versini, during her short=lived marriage to Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini.

‘Black Panther’ Keeps Breaking Box Office Records

NEW YORK (AP) — With a massive $ 40.2 million in ticket sales Monday, “Black Panther” has set another box-office record: biggest Monday ever.

The Walt Disney Co. again raised its box-office estimates for the Marvel sensation on Tuesday. The film’s updated Monday performance — $ 7 million higher than Disney earlier forecast — narrowly topped the previous record, set by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015 with $ 40.1 million.

The higher Monday figure gives “Black Panther” the second biggest four-day weekend, behind only the $ 288.1 million of “The Force Awakens.” With $ 242 million over the Presidents’ Day weekend, “Black Panther” moves ahead of December’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” in the ranks of four-day starts.

Ryan Coogler’s film, starring Chadwick Boseman, is the first big-budget tent pole release featuring a nearly all-black cast. The movie’s three-day gross of $ 201.8 million ranks fifth highest of all time, not accounting for inflation.

Internationally, “Black Panther,” which cost $ 200 million to make, is also outperforming earlier estimates. It has made $ 184.6 million overseas thus far, giving it a worldwide total of $ 426.6 million.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Monday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by comScore:

Carrie Underwood Works Out With Son After Breaking Wrist, Injuring Face

Carrie Underwood shared a sweet pic showing her working out with her husband and son, four months after breaking her wrist and injuring her face in a fall at home.

“My boys make work outs fun (and a bit less productive, but that’s ok!),” the American Idol alum, 34, captioned a pic that showed her doing a squat with her 2-year-old, Isaiah, who she shares with husband Mike Fisher.

A second pic showed the hockey star, 37, who recently announced he was coming out of retirement, doing a push-up with Isaiah.

As previously reported, Underwood broke her wrist and suffered other injuries after taking a hard fall on some steps outside her Nashville home in November.

She had surgery to put a pin in her wrist, joking that she would be setting off metal detectors at airports, and revealed in a Christmas update to fans that the accident was far worse than originally thought.

The “Jesus Take the Wheel” singer said that she’d had “between 40 and 50 stitches” to her face after the fall and “might look a bit different” now.

Fisher has been by his wife’s side as she recovered from her devastating injuries and a source told Us Weekly last month that she encouraged him to return to the Nashville Predators after just five months of retirement.

“She wants him to be happy and knew he should go for it,” the source told Us. “He asked for her blessing and totally got it. She’s behind him with whatever he chooses to do.”

As Us reported exclusively earlier this week, there is another project Underwood is working on as she prepares to return to the spotlight — having baby no. 2.

“Everyone around her knows she wants a big family, and they’re always trying for another baby,” the country superstar’s friend told Us.

Senate Candidate Roy Moore Says NFL Protesters Are Breaking the Law

Senate candidate Roy Moore believes that professional athletes who take a knee during the national anthem are breaking the law.

In an interview with TIME magazine, the Alabama Republican argued that NFL players and others who have protested police violence are violating a section of the U.S. code which outlines how people should conduct themselves when the anthem is played. (The code merely outlines proper etiquette, and there are no legal penalties outlined in the law.)

“It’s against the law, you know that?” he said. “It was a act of Congress that every man stand and put their hand over their heart. That’s the law.”

In 2016, then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began taking a knee during the national anthem. While campaigning for Moore’s primary opponent in Alabama in September, President Trump argued that NFL players who take a knee should be fired, setting off a national controversy.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He’s fired. He’s fired!’” Trump said.

Moore, who gained national notoriety when he defied a court order to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from courthouse grounds and later when he continued to enforce a gay-marriage ban that had been overturned by the Supreme Court, said he fully supports Trump’s criticism.

“I back the President in upholding respect for the patriotism for our country, on two grounds,” he said. “One, it’s respect for the law. If we don’t respect the law, what kind of country are we going to have? Two, it’s respect for those who have fallen and given the ultimate sacrifice. I’m surprised that no one brought this up.”

He added that it’s a matter of the “the rule of law.”

“If they didn’t have it in there, it would just be tradition. But this is law,” he said. “If we disobey this, what else are we going to disobey?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has unveiled its latest trailer, and the two-and-a-half minute glimpse of writer-director Rian Johnson's installment hinted at betrayals, reversals, at least one major (and all too real) death … and the possibility that the young Jedi in training played by Daisy Ridley may be on a one-way

‘Star Trek: Discovery’: Breaking Down the Full Season Trailer

Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers from the first two episodes Star Trek: Discovery. Proceed at your own risk.

The first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery have officially aired (whether you watched them on the CBS All Access app or internationally on Netflix). They presented a contained story that ended in the death of a key character — Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). Her death came at the hands of the Klingons, who had set a trap for Georgiou’s crew, the U.S.S. Shenzhou. The leader of the Klingons, T’Kuvma, was also killed, as was a Federation Admiral. The episode ended with First Officer Michael Burnham being court-martialed for mutiny and the Klingon/Federation war launching into full force.

The trailer below picks up sometime after the events of the first two episodes. Burnham is in prison and the war is raging. Somehow, Burnham gets recruited by Captain Gabriel Lorca and joins the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery. Let’s break down where Star Trek: Discovery is headed this season.

Welcome to the War

The first shot in this trailer shows Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) in what seems to be a prison transfer. A women tells her the death toll of the war, which Burnham corrects, down to the exact number. This scene is reminiscent of two other sci-fi franchises: Star Wars Rogue One and Battlestar Galactica. In Rogue One, adult Jyn Erso is first seen on a prison transfer. She is rescued by the Rebellion in order to find her father. In this trailer, Captain Lorca recruits Burnham, in order to help win the war. The similarities here are very clear. In Battlestar Galactica, President Roslin keeps track of how many survivors there are aboard the convoy. While Roslin’s numbers are tracking lives saved, Burnham is tracking lives lost. Also during the trailer, a Federation officer tells Lorca that this entire war is Burnham’s fault. Since Burnham is counting the death toll, she must feel that fault as well.

All Aboard the Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Captain Lorca
Jason Isaacs is Captain Gabriel Lorca.

We didn’t meet Lorca (Jason Isaacs) in the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, but we definitely meet him here. Despite Burnham being tried and found guilty of mutiny, Lorca wants her on board his ship. His crew does not seem thrilled, especially Saru, who survived the destruction of the Shenzhou. Why does Lorca want her? “I have something on deck that requires every trained mind available.” Apparently the Discovery has discovered something — something so important Lorca is willing to bring someone as dangerous as Burnham on board.

A Mysterious Substance

This mysterious substance will give Burnham and the Discovery’s science team something new to study.

As the trailer progresses, Burnham starts to notice an unusual substance. In one scene it looks like small, gel orbs. In another scene, it looks like an atrium full of plants. In the canon of Star Trek, ships discover new life forms and technologies all the time. Will this substance change how we view Star Trek? Does it have to do with terraforming (a process explored in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan)? Does it have to do with shapeshifting matter, as it did with Odo and the Founders on Deep Space 9? Is it the “space fungi” Anthony Rapp was referring to during press at San Diego Comic-Con? Whatever it is, Lorca is willing to have Burnham’s presence on his ship to study its capabilities. He even says in the trailer, “Imagine the possibilities,” does he mean, the possibilities of the substance? Could it help them win the war?

Klingon Honor

Leader of House Kor, Kol is played by actor Kenneth Mitchell.

According to tradition, dying in battle is a Klingon‘s greatest honor. Now that T’Kuvma is dead, other Klingons are taking up his cause to unite the 24 houses. Some will even hail him as Kahless, the spiritual leader of Kronos, reborn. In the trailer, you can see a new Klingon leader — a female named L’Rell (Mary Chieffo) and Kol (Kenneth Mitchell) the leader of House Kor. They must take up T’Kuvma’s cause now that he is dead. They must find T’Kuvma’s Klingon Bird of Prey Sarcophagus ship, because that is also visible in the trailer.

Meet Mudd

star trek discovery harry mudd
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ will give us the backstory of fan favorite character, Harry Mudd.

If you’ve ever seen The Office, you may have recognized actor Rainn Wilson right away. He’s playing Harry Mudd on Discovery. Like Sarek, Mudd is a classic Star Trek character. He first appeared on Star Trek: The Original Series in an episode titled “Mudd’s Women” and then again in “I, Mudd.” In the trailer, Mudd is antagonizing the Federation, asking them if they ever think of the little people. We assume he’s talking about the bystanders, the casualties of war. It’s hard to say what role he’ll be playing in the series, but on ST: TOS he was a smuggler, a gambler, and an all around trashy guy. Definitely not someone to be trusted.

Whether you’re curious about the space fungi, learn why Lorca puts his trust in Burnham, or want more Klingons, it looks like Star Trek: Discovery has a lot of adventure in store for the rest of the season.

Star Trek: Discovery uploads new episodes to CBS All Access Sundays at 8:30EST/5:30PST.

How to Enjoy Prom Season Without Breaking the Bank

prom season

You can enjoy prom season without breaking the bank.

Find a quiet space and repeat this to yourself until you believe it. Then, have an annual conversation with the teens under your parental authority—starting their freshman year in high school, ideally—so that they understand this (even if they don’t like it), too.

According to a recent prom expense survey by Visa, an average of $ 919 was spent per prom-going teen in 2015. Fortunately, that’s significantly lower than when that spending peaked at more than $ 1,100 for prom season in 2013. However, depending on other factors, prom spending can be much higher than these averages. According to Visa’s survey, elaborate prom invitations alone—or “prom-posals,” which rival fancy wedding invitations—cost $ 324 on average.

Even scarier, households with lower incomes were more likely to spend more money on their teens’ prom season experience. According to Visa, families with total household income below $ 50,000 a year planned to spend $ 1,109 on the prom. Families making under $ 25,000 planned to spend $ 1,393. However, families with more than $ 50,000 in household income spent an average of just $ 799.

Whatever your financial situation, it is neither necessary nor financially healthy to break the bank for prom season. Here are tips to save money without losing the magic of prom night.

The Tux: Don’t Rent It; Buy It

Go with the traditional black tux, so you can continue to wear it to formal events in the future, getting more bang for your buck. Buying a tux may not cost more than renting one. It’s possible to buy a nice tux for less than $ 150, especially if you avoid the fancy designer brand names that no one will know or care about on prom night. Also, you don’t have to worry about returning it or getting charged cleaning or other fees if it is soiled or damaged.

If your prom date is worried that your black tux won’t match her dress, match her chosen color with accessories, such as your tie, vest, pocket square, suspenders, or even socks! However, if your goal is to coordinate your outfit to match your date, resist the urge to splurge on accessories that you probably will never wear again, such as a top hat, cummerbund, walking stick, or shoes in a color that matches her dress. With a black tux, a pair of black leather dress shoes, which can be worn long after the prom (and you may already own), works just fine.

The Dress: Don’t Buy It; Rent or Borrow It

Parents of daughters (I raised three) already know that this is the most sensitive part of prom spending, because they (and other relatives) really get caught up in the excitement of prom season. Because of the emotions associated with this event as a rite of passage, it is easy to overpay for prom gowns. But trust me, she’ll still look like a princess, even if you consider two cost-saving options:

  1. Borrowing a Prom Dress: You can ask to borrow from an older sister, cousin, another relative, or maybe a friend, whose prom dress was worn in a totally different school, in another town. As long as the dress is the right size, your daughter will still look lovely in a borrowed gown, and no one will know, notice, or care.
  2. Buy a Used Prom Dress: Search online, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what’s available. Pre-owned dresses are usually in great shape, since most haven’t been worn much. Again, no one will be the wiser.

If You Just Have to Buy the Dress…

The options of borrowing or renting a prom dress might be tough sells, but do your best to remind yourself (and your princess) that it doesn’t make sense to break the bank for a dress she might never wear again after prom night. But, if she (or you) can’t bear the thought of not buying a new dress for the prom, at least follow these tips to save money:

  1. Don’t Get Caught up in Brand or Designer Names: Doing so can easily add hundreds of dollars to the cost of the dress. She’ll look just as amazing in a non-brand name dress, and no one will know the difference or care. Insist that she try on as many dresses as possible, not just window shop or look at pictures. The more dresses she actually tries on, the more likely she’ll see that the more expensive dresses do not necessarily look any better on her than non-brand name dresses.
  2. Don’t Overspend on Shoes to Match the Dress: Depending on the color, it’s likely that she’ll never wear them again.

By the way, unless you’re sure she will wear the dress in the future (again, not likely), be willing to loan it to another family member for their prom night. Or better, consider donating the dress to a nonprofit organization that collects them for girls from families that cannot afford to buy prom dresses, such as Project G.L.A.M.

Create a Prom Budget and Stick to It

Resist the urge to splurge, even if prom night only comes once in a lifetime. You and your teen should create a budget for prom season expenses, covering everything from the dress and shoes to transportation. Clearly determine who will pay for what—including what your child’s date or their parents will cover—when payments are due, and where the money will come from.

Then, stick to the budget—period.

Other Cost-Saving Ideas

Take your own pre-prom photos, instead of paying a professional photographer. Your kids will likely value the selfies with friends they’ll take on their own phones that night far more than the traditional prom night portrait shots, anyway. Most phone cameras are of high enough quality to deliver great digital photos, which you can convert to print inexpensively.

Split the cost of a limo with other couples attending the same prom. Of course, hiring a limo greatly reduces the risk of drunk driving accidents—every parent’s prom season nightmare. That’s money well spent.

Also, remember, this is not your prom night. Insist that your teen pick up at least half—if not all—of prom-related expenses. The definition of “must have” will change dramatically when your children, not you, have to find a way to help pay for it. Teens become amazingly cost-conscious when they are required to earn and spend their own money, instead of yours.

Finally, help your child keep things in perspective. It does not make sense to go into debt, (or exhaust savings better used for college, a first apartment, a car, or other expense of new adulthood) just to finance an over-the-top prom season experience.

Breaking news: Kids are messy, these splat mats will save your floors

by

Becky Vieira

posted in Products

When my son started on solids it was adorable. I’d spoon feed him pureed fruits and vegetables, and our biggest concern was a stained bib. Cut to six months later and the feeding game has changed completely. It looks more like the aftermath of a food fight than an Instagram-worthy moment.

I now retrieve actual food — goodbye, liquid peas — from his hair and dodge the occasional blueberry. And it’s messy. Oh, so messy.

One evening I found myself on my hands and knees picking up food before I mopped the area under his highchair for the fourth (or was it fifth) time that week. Walking across my kitchen held as much appeal as striding barefoot in a gas station bathroom. It was sticky, dirty and a foul stench was emanating from the corner of the room (turns out I missed a bit of the previous night’s meal in my cleanup).

child sits atop five splat mats

It was time to call upon the powers of splat mats, which are essentially a giant coaster that your child’s highchair sits upon. Instead of those berries being mashed into your floor, food lands on the mat. My kitchen floor is now so clean that you could eat off it. Which is ironic, as it also solved the problem of having food all over my floor.

I’m a self-admitted product junkie. I happily tested several splat mats and narrowed the field down to my five favorites:

1. Sugarbooger: This is one of the bigger splat mats, measuring 42” by 42” — perfect if your little one likes to use mealtime as a chance to exercise her pitching arm. It comes with a matching zipper bag, which I love for travel and storage. It fits easily into a kitchen drawer or my suitcase. The mess accompanying meals can be stressful in hotels or vacation rentals; this eliminates any concern. The kids eat, the floor stays clean and your security deposit remains intact. This mat is sturdy, made of a laminated cotton canvas and can be wiped clean. If you find a pattern you love you’ll be happy to know you can also buy a slew of matching products, including sippy cups, plates, bowls, silverware and even teethers. I adore this mat. When my son gets a bit older I plan to use it for craft projects as well as a table cloth for the toddler table we have our eye on for the next stage of eating. (Ore’Originals, $ 49.95)

2. Satsuma Designs: My son can’t stop laughing at the whimsical monkey print on our Satsuma mat, which is actually a dual kids art and splat mat. Not only does it work under his highchair, it has four pockets to store art supplies and it fits many popular brands of art tables — and it’s so well made, you will have it for years to come. If I didn’t love this product enough already, the brand itself stole my heart. Made in Seattle, a portion of each order goes toward purchasing infant formula that is distributed by one of Seattle’s 27 food banks. (Satsuma Designs, $ 25)

3. Bumkins: I never leave the house without several Bumkins bags for snacks and spare clothes, and the brand’s splat mat has proved equally indispensable. This is another big one (42” by 42”) that can be spot cleaned or tossed in your washing machine, which I love. My son and I sometimes spread this out on the living room floor for snack picnics. You can choose from a licensed character pattern (we love Mickey Mouse in our home) or a more modern look, including chevron and arrows. (Bumkins, $ 19.95)

Bumkins splat mats seen under highchair and with baby sitting atop

4. Kushies: What stands out to me about the Kushies Cleanmat is that it’s round. And big — 54” in diameter. It first caught my eye when I saw it at a friend’s house. The Wall on Game of Thrones: Breaking Down Its History and Magic

Warning: This post contains spoilers for season seven of Game of Thrones.

With an ice dragon now under his control, the Night King is more formidable than ever. But for the time being, the people of Westeros still have one major advantage over the leader of the dead: the Wall.

Although Game of Thrones hasn’t spent nearly as much time at the Wall since Jon Snow renounced his Night’s Watch vows, the magical barrier has continued to shield the Seven Kingdoms from the dangers that lie beyond. However, with the threat of the White Walkers looming large, some fans believe the Wall is slated to come crashing down in the season seven finale.

Here’s everything we know about the Wall in Game of Thrones, best known as the realm’s long-standing first line of defense.

What is the Wall in Game of Thrones?

The Game of Thrones Wall is a 700-foot tall, 300-foot thick fortification that is 300 miles and spans Westeros’ northern border — from the Bay of Seals in the east to the Gorge in the west. The ice wall was originally built to defend the realm against the White Walkers, ice creatures who were created by the Children of the Forest in an effort to defend themselves against the First Men. But many also believe the Wall is a barrier to keep the Wildlings, or anyone who chooses to live outside the Seven Kingdoms, at bay.

“The Night’s Watch has forgotten its true purpose, Tarly,” Lord Commander Jeor Mormont tells Samwell Tarly in George R.R. Martin’s A Storm of Swords. “You don’t build a wall seven hundred feet high to keep savages in skins from stealing women. The Wall was made to guard the realms of men…and not against other men, which is all the Wildlings are when you come right down to it. Too many years, Tarly, too many hundreds and thousands of years. We lost sight of the true enemy.”
HBO

Is the Wall magic?

The Wall in Game of Thrones is said to be warded with magic to prevent the dead from crossing over. This is significant as it is presumably the only reason the Night King and his army haven’t yet attempted to cross it.

“The Wall is not just ice and stone,” Benjen Stark — the younger brother of Ned — told Bran Stark and Meera Reed in the season six finale. “Ancient spells were carved into its foundation, strong magic to protect men from what lies beyond. And while it stands, the dead cannot pass.”

HBO

Who built the Wall?

The Wall was supposedly constructed some eight millennia ago by giants and men under the direction of King Brandon Stark — a.k.a. Bran the Builder — following the War for the Dawn.

However, some fans believe that present-day Bran Stark and Bran the Builder are actually the same person. There’s speculation that Bran will at some point travel back in time in an attempt to prevent the White Walkers from destroying Westeros only to discover that — since time in the Thrones universe operates in a closed loop — he was the one who built the Wall all along.

HBO fanned the flames of this theory when it showed Bran the Builder being carried around on a platform — indicating he may have been paralyzed just like Bran Stark — in a DVD extra about the history of Westeros on the season one box set.

Who lives at the Wall?

The Wall is defended by the men of the Night’s Watch who live in castles positioned at strategic locations along its 300-mile length. However, while the Watch once drew enough recruits to man up to 17 of its 19 castles at one time, there are now only three still guarded by sworn brothers — Castle Black, Eastwatch-by-the-Sea and the Shadow Tower. When recruits are accepted into the Watch, they “take the black” by reciting the following vows:

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

After joining the Night’s Watch in season one, Jon Snow — along with his fellow brother Sam Tarly — spent much of his time either stationed at Castle Black or ranging beyond the Wall with Lord Commander Jeor Mormont. Jon’s years with the Watch also included an undercover stint with the Widlings beyond the Wall during which he was introduced to Ygritte, Tormund and Free Folk leader Mance Rayder.

Where is the Wall in real life?

During a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, George R.R. Martin revealed that he came up with the concept of the Wall while visiting Hadrian’s Wall in England.

I can trace back the inspiration for that to 1981. I was in England visiting a friend, and as we approached the border of England and Scotland, we stopped to see Hadrian’s Wall. I stood up there and I tried to imagine what it was like to be a Roman legionary, standing on this wall, looking at these distant hills. It was a very profound feeling. For the Romans at that time, this was the end of civilization; it was the end of the world. We know that there were Scots beyond the hills, but they didn’t know that. It could have been any kind of monster. It was the sense of this barrier against dark forces – it planted something in me.

However, the Wall in the show is created pretty much entirely through CGI.

Will the Wall fall?

There are a number of fan theories regarding the destruction of the Wall. Here are a few of the most popular.

The Night King’s Mark

After being physically touched by the Night King during a vision in the fifth episode of season six, Bran was told by the former Three-Eyed Raven that he was no longer safe in the cave under the giant weirwood tree. The Night King and his White Walker lieutenants were then able to gain entrance to the cave, proving that he had nullified its magic by marking Bran. If the same principle holds true for the spells of the Wall, Bran may have already undone its magic when he crossed back to the southern side.

Viserion the Ice Dragon

The final moments of the sixth episode of season seven saw the army of the dead drag Viserion’s body out from the depths of the frozen lake beyond the Wall. The Night King then laid his hand on the dragon’s snout, reanimating him. Considering the birth of Daenerys’ dragons was the event that reawoke magic in the world of Thrones following a long period of dormancy, it stands to reason that an undead dragon may be a powerful enough being to overcome the Wall’s wards — and maybe even bring the entire thing crashing down.

HBO

The Horn of Winter

Since the Horn of Winter — also known as the Horn of Joramun — has never even been mentioned on the show, it’s unlikely that it will come into play this late in the game. However, in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, the Horn is a legendary artifact said to posses the power to bring down the Wall when blown. Ygritte tells Jon that the Wildlings searched far and wide for the Horn under the direction of Mance Rayder, but it was supposedly never found.

However, in A Dance With Dragons, Melisandre gives an ominous warning to the Free Folk concerning the Horn. “The Horn of Joramun? No. Call it the Horn of Darkness,” she says. If the Wall falls, night falls as well, the long night that never ends. It must not happen, will not happen!”

The Night King seems to have tools at the ready for every obstacle he encounters — like ice spears and giant chains. So, although unlikely, it’s possible he could be waiting for the right moment to reveal he’s in possession of the Horn as well.

“The Dragon and the Wolf,” the finale of Game of Thrones‘ seventh season, airs Aug. 27 at 9 p.m. on HBO.

This Is Rei Kawakubo, The Designer Breaking Down Binaries At The Met

Categories can be presented as choices, but more often, they designate limitations to our freedom. Between options lurks an “or,” a subtle warning of our “this or that” restrictions.

“Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” the exhibition opening this week at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, operates differently. The show, honoring iconic Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, is divided into several categorical pairings, such as “Then/Now,” “East/West,” “High/Low,” and even “Clothes/Not Clothes.” Yet the slash stuck between each pairing isn’t intended as an “or.” Instead, it’s meant to demarcate an in-between, a space that turns dichotomies into cacophonous harmonies.

The exhibition, decisively described as not a retrospective, features 150 garments from Kawakubo’s collections, divided into binary categories she then proceeds to break down. All of the pieces are presented at eye-level, so the viewer can properly observe the magic of their construction. There is no wall text whatsoever, a nod to Kawakubo’s consistent refusal to define her work in rigid terms. “The meaning is that there is no meaning,” she said in 1995.

The designer was born in Tokyo in 1942, the oldest of three children and the only girl. At university, Kawakubo studied the history of aesthetics, which incorporated elements of Asian and Western Art. It was in 1973 when she established her now-famous label Comme des Garçons (which means “like some boys”), opening her first store just two years later.

Kawakubo made her Western debut in Paris in 1982, disrupting the era’s wave of glamorous power suits with saggy, lopsided black frocks accentuated with holes, shredded fabric and excess layers of more black. Like many great avant-garde works of art, Kawakubo’s collection was initially met with shock and disdain; critics described it as “ragged chic,” “Hiroshima’s revenge” and “post atomic.”

One of her most iconic collections came over 10 years later with the spring/summer 1997 collection “Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body,” featuring skintight stretch dresses pulled over ballooning pads. The form-hugging attire accentuated the pads’ bizarre humps and swelling, radically transfiguring the wearer’s silhouette. The dresses, which were later adapted into costumes for a Merce Cunningham dance, epitomize Kawakubo’s radical ability to defy the assumptions about clothes you never knew you had.

Even if you’re not into identifying fashion designers, recognizing Kawakubo’s work is a cinch. Mostly because her designs barely resemble clothing at all, boldly defying the laws clothes are intended to serve. Most garments cater to the body of their wearer ― flattering the figure by enhancing certain body parts and downplaying others, all in accordance with ideal beauty standards. Even more fundamentally, they follow certain elementary guidelines ― for example, shirts and pants have a set amount of holes.

For Kawakubo, these items of clothing are hardly that simple. As she told The Guardian: “I built my work from within instead of satisfying a demand for sexualised and ostentatious clothing.”

At times, a Commes des Garçons piece can resemble a cocoon or a gift in haphazard wrapping paper. Some tops contain far too may holes for human arms to occupy, as if designed with another species in mind; others have none at all. Many feature bulging protuberances, while other extreme finishing touches like ruffles or collars seem to be exacting revenge on the wearer.

Kawakubo’s designs tend to transform those who don them into mythical personae, otherworldly creatures or conceptual artworks. Instead of aspiring to make a woman look long and lean, Kawakubo endows her models with pillowy hunchbacks and architectural nests for hair, destabilizing the gaze that often governs fashion.

For centuries, the act of dressing up has proven capable of turning women into characters ― the bride, the professional, the vixen, the princess, the tomboy. The ability to embody an alter ego just by slipping on a dress can be liberating, though of course, the range of available characters can also be limiting. They can seem like choices that, in reality, are anything but.

Kawakubo, however, explodes the vault, queering established feminine tropes and ushering in the masculine, the inanimate, the surreal. Instead of being an “old Hollywood starlet” for a night, how about a pillowcase? A cluster of barnacles? A cobweb? Kawakubo’s clothing invites women to transcend and transmute their bodies, weaving fairytales from their own flesh. In Commes des Garçons’ world, there are no stereotypes, no laws, no masters and no categories: the freedom is absolute and often breathtaking.

You might not realize how similarly individuals dress until you set eyes on a woman wearing what looks like a blowfish carcass, something so unmistakably distinct. Even at The Met Gala, where Kawakubo was the theme, Rihanna’s army of petals ― one of the few actual Comme des Garçons dresses worn ― made jaws drop.

Today, Kawakubo is known as one of the most respected designers of all time ― only the second living designer to be honored with a Met exhibition, after Yves Saint Laurent’s in 1983. Some repeated themes in Kawakubo’s work include the colors black and red, bulging shapes, punk plaid, allusions to bridal and princess gowns ― somehow mangled and resuscitated ― tattered holes, shredded layers, asymmetrical hems and a sculptural intensity that’s rarely seen on the human body.

Most of all though, she’s defined by her inability to be defined. Her work’s most identifiable quality is its sense of boundlessness, which brings into being visions so viscerally peculiar most of us couldn’t conjure them in a dream state. In an interview with The New Yorker, the famously silent Kawakubo revealed that she had “never belonged to a movement, followed a religion, subscribed to an ideology, or worshipped a hero.”

She has even denounced those who have hailed her a feminist icon, refusing to belong to any such category. “I am not a feminist,” she said in 2009. “I was never interested in any movement as such. I just decided to make a company built around creation, and with creation as my sword, I could fight the battles I wanted to fight.”

Comme des Garçons does, however, liberate women from the monolithic male gaze, from the fashionable tradition of dressing up as a mode of self-improvement. But the label does more. It frees art from existing, cold and untouched, in glass cases and frames. It releases pants from the expectation of being two-legged. And it emancipates human beings from their flesh, inviting people to embody intangible ideas that defy categorization.

“Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” runs until September 4 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. See photos from The Met Gala here.

Sorry, Walter White, there’s a new cook in town. His name is Spongebob Squarepants — and you better say his name.

YouTuber RunningFlannel’s “Breaking Sponge,” a mashup of “Breaking Bad” and “Spongebob Squarepants,” is so good that it almost works too perfectly. The meth lab becomes the Krusty Krab, Sandy is Skyler and a furious Squidward is Tuco. Check out the video and continue wishing this could be a full-length series.

‘Breaking Bad’ ‘Frozen’ Parody Asks ‘Do You Want To Build A Meth Lab?’

In April, Jesse Pinkman answered the question, “Do you want to build a snowman?” in the way only he could. Now, Walter White is at his door with a far more sinister proposal. Forcefully reminding a young Anna that he is the one who knocks, Walt begs Jesse to come build a meth lab. Despite humorous bits like Walt’s pants falling down at the door, the parody is actually quite the emotional ride, and for those who have yet to finish watching the full series, contains some serious spoilers. Watch the video above, but tread lightly.
