Report: Jussie Smollett Loses Role In Broadway Play After Scandal

Jussie Smollett now has some new ish to worry about and it’s all because of his alleged hate crime situation in Chicago.

Specifically, his hate crime stunt looks to be the reason he’s out as the lead in the upcoming revival of the Broadway play Take Me Out.

The play’s originally run started in February, 2003 and had 355 performances. It also won a Tony Award for Best Play.

Fast forward to the present where Smollett, who is biracial and openly gay was supposed be the lead as  Darren Lemming, a mixed-race professional baseball player at the peak of his career who decides to come out of the closet.

The stage drama sounds like it was ripped from current headlines as it looks at issues like homophobia, racism, classism and toxic masculinity in men’s sports.

Wow. Sounds like the perfect role for Smollett. Or at least it would’ve been.

The story goes that Smollett auditioned for the role back in January, just 12 hours before he allegedly staged the faux hate crime involving two Nigerian brothers, Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo.

The Chicago Police Dept. alleged that the 33-year-old actor was lying and that he staged the hoax to boost his celebrity profile.

A source tells DailyMail that Smollett had already won the role in the play.

“Everything was set to go and the producers were planning to announce that Jussie and Zachary Quinto were starring in the play last month,” said one Broadway insider.

“Everyone was so supportive after the attack and then suddenly, everything shifted.”

Another DailyMail source close to the play said the events involving Smollett left them in shock.

“Here is a kid who is on a hit television show, has made a name for himself, and gets the chance of a lifetime.”

And whether Empire is cancelled or not, it would’ve been a great transition vehicle for Smollett.

“He would have come off the sixth season of Empire and kicked off the next leg of his career with a role on Broadway. And not just that, the lead role in one of the best plays of the century in his Broadway debut.”

That source then wondered what a lot of people are thinking about the actor:

“Why on earth would someone throw that all away?”

The DailyMail did add that a source involved in the production would only say that no casting had been announced or confirmed at this time. That individual also confirmed that Smollett took part in a reading of the play in January.

There was also no response from Smollett’s crisis manager, so it’s yet to be seen if Smollett may still make his Broadway debut.

Carol Channing, known mostly for her role as clever matchmaker Dolly Levi in Broadway’s Hello Dolly! musical, passed away on Tuesday at age 97. Channing was part black and spoke often of the need “to pass” to achieve success.

The actress, singer, comedian, and dancer was a fixture on Broadway and on television, appearing in guest roles on shows including Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, The Love Boat, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and more.

In her autobiography, “Just Lucky I Guess,” published in 2002, Channing revealed that she was in fact, part African American. According to Wikipedia, Channing’s mother Adelaide Glaser was German Jewish and her father, George Christian Channing, was African American and German. Her father was a journalist and a Christian Scientist.

In an interview with former talk show host Larry King in 2002, Channing described her reaction to learning her father was half-black.

…when I found out. I was 16-years-old and my mother told me. And you know, only the reaction on me was, Gee, I got the greatest genes in show business.  Every time I start to sing or dance, I know it, and I’m proud of it.

She revealed in another interview that her mother told her about her father’s heritage because she didn’t want her to be surprised if she “had a black baby.”

In her biography, Channing wrote that she kept her heritage secret so she wouldn’t be typecast on Broadway and in Hollywood.

During her interview with King, Channing spoke about her friendship with Louis Armstrong, the musician who helped make the Hello, Dolly! title song a hit.

“[I] campaigned with Louis Armstrong for President Kennedy. We were in the Armory in Washington. We were in the Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis..[]… And we dressed together in this huge locker room, it’s a city block long. But we already knew each other and we’d sit right close together. The most adorable, he wore a handkerchief.

Black Enterprise editor Lydia T. Blanco, recalls a memory when Channing visited her school:

I had the opportunity to meet Channing while in middle school in San Francisco. She prided herself on being a native and visited us during an assembly to talk about her work as an actress. We had the conversation about white-passing and Channing shared that that was a part of her story. I believe that her mother shared that her grandmother was black. She even signed my year book!

Later on in college, a play was given in the Little Theater at Bennett and “white-passing” was a subject matter and Carol Channing’s name and career were also mentioned in that setting.

Channing leaves behind one son, Channing Lowe.

Kanye West Apologizes For Using Phone During Cher’s Broadway Show

NEW YORK (AP) — Kanye West has apologized for his lack of phone etiquette while he and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, attended opening night of “The Cher Show” on Broadway.

Jarrod Spector plays Sonny Bono in the musical. He thought it was cool West was in the audience but not cool that the rapper was looking at his cellphone.

Spector tweeted: “If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here.”

West later apologized in a reply on Twitter for his “lack of etiquette.” He wrote “the dynamics of Cher and Sonny’s relationship made Kim and I grab each other’s hand and sing “I got you babe.”

Kardashian West is a huge Cher fan.

Kanye West called out on Twitter for being on his phone during Broadway performance

TwitterFacebook

Being on your phone during a stage production is considered pretty rude, especially if it’s opening night, and even if you’re Kanye West.

The artist was called out on Twitter by one of the stars of Cher-inspired musical The Cher Show, Jarrod Spector, for spending time on his phone during Monday’s opening night performance.

West was attending the show with his wife, Kim Kardashian West, a couple that weren’t ever going to blend in with the crowd — or the cast.

“If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here,” tweeted Spector, who plays Sonny Bono, while the performance was underway. Read more…
