Thrashin’: The Case For One Sneaker All Summer Long

When you’re young, authenticity can be everything. Probably before Holden Caulfield whined about phonies, and certainly since, we judge people by their trueness to themselves, until experience softens that stance — both because life sands down the sharper edges of our judgment and because we get cynical. Authenticity goes from an expectation to be met to a pleasant surprise when we find it. Yeah, I’m talking about sneakers.

One of the brands that really gets authenticity-oriented folks’ hackles up is Golden Goose, an Italian luxury brand (their website has “deluxe brand” IN THE URL) that specializes in sneakers. Generally basic looking sneakers — leather/suede uppers, rubber sole, sometimes decorated with a star where otherwise you might see three stripes or a swoosh. They’re quite expensive, but so are many sneakers. What drives people nuts is that they’re pre-distressed.

(Written on the tongue of Golden Goose shoes: “FOR SKATEBOARD USE ONLY,” which is a quick way to boil the blood of the authenticity-obsessed skate community. A lot of the designs are patched up in ways clearly inspired by how skaters repair/extend the life of their shoes, which wear out quickly.)

To quote Bob Dylan, I used to care, but things have changed. We had a lot of the same arguments about distressed jeans a decade ago — like everyone else I wore raw APCs for years to get some authentically worn denim. Then everyone seemed to realize that Levi’s Vintage Clothing, RRL, Visvim, Chimala, etc. made really nice distressed jeans. If some people want to spend $ 500 on ugly distressed jeans or sneakers, let em.

The best response to $ 500 artificially distressed sneakers may be less to actively hate them than to distress some cheap sneakers authentically. After all, there’s little better than a boxfresh pair of shoes, but a perfectly thrashed pair comes close. Recently, author (and skater) Andrew Luecke said “Everyone should buy a pair of canvas sneakers every May and totally cook ‘em by September,” and that’s a concept with which I’m fully on board.

May is over, but summer doesn’t technically start for another week, so there’s time to get a pair of basic canvas sneakers to be your summer pair of summer. Often I make long lists of recommendations, but in this case it barely matters, and quality/value is not necessarily a prime criterion: these are sneakers you plan to wear to death in months.

  • Vans Authentics or Eras ($ 50): Vans original deck shoe (the simple Authentic) and an early skateboard-oriented shoe (the slightly padded era) are cheap and look great beat up. Best in white or navy (Vans navy is really pretty light), with red and black close behind. The plan is to wear these with everything, so while I like prints, etc., I’d stick with the basics.
  • Sperry CVOs ($ 75): Another great deck shoe, with a siped rather than gum sole, and fewer subcultural connotations/less branding than Vans.
  • Converse Jack Purcell ($ 65): A court shoe, Purcells are a little sportier than Vans or Sperrys.
  • Tretorn Nylites ($ 70): A lightly different silhouette and vibe to preppier Tretorns, one of Luecke’s recommendations.
  • Superga cortu classic ($ 65): Another Luecke pick, Supergas have the benefit of being a bit more unusual than the standards.
  • There are number of great looking vulcanized canvas shoes out of Japan, like Moon Star/Shoes Like Pottery, Wakouwa, etc., which I recommend, but not for summer filthifying purposes.

Once you get a pair, wear them everywhere. To barbecues, to baseball games, to the beach (they can get wet). Don’t carefully clean them, don’t baby them, don’t use shoe trees. Wear them with socks, or without. Use an insole, or don’t. Maybe throw them in the washing machine once in August (afterward, I recommend stuffing with paper towels and air drying). Or just hose ’em down as necessary. Despite the general rule of thumb of giving shoes time between wears, just wear them every damn day. By Labor Day, they’ll be perfect. And you can chuck them in October.

The Shooter: 8th Defendant In Tekashi 6ix9ine Case Pleads Guilty

Tekashi 6ix9ine Performs in Concert in Stockholm

The Feds have Tekashi69 and his affiliates in their sights, and they continue to drop. Another defendant in the conspiracy case against the Brooklyn rapper has pleaded guilty.

By the reports, this guy was “The Shooter.”

Reports Complex:

On Monday, Kintea “Kooda B” McKenzie, became the eighth defendant in the 6ix9ine racketeering case to plead guilty, according to court documents. The defendant appeared in Manhattan District Court for his alleged connection to the shooting of Chief Keef outside the W Hotel in Times Square. McKenzie pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Kooda allegedly accepted a $ 10,000 payment from 6ix9ine for carrying out the shooting in June 2018. In his guilty plea in January, 6ix9ine admitted to his role in the attack and named McKenzie as the shooter. However, in February, Kooda was granted bail despite the mounting evidence against him. Unlike many of the other defendants in the case, McKenzie is not suspected of being a member of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods.

Interestingly, despite being named the shooter, McKenzie was granted bail earlier this year.

“Today, Kintea McKenzie admitted his responsibility for a brazen shooting in bustling Times Square,” U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement. “In coordination with Tekashi 6ix9ine and other Nine Trey gang members, McKenzie arranged to have another individual shoot at a rival gang member. We continue our daily work with our law enforcement partners to keep our communities safe and to vigorously investigate acts of violence committed by gang members.”

Reportedly, the Feds pegged McKenzie to the scene via DNA evidence found on a discarded water bottle.

Yeah, if the Feds want you, and you actually did dirt, you may want to take that plea deal.

Kevin Spacey Makes Surprise Court Appearance for Hearing in Groping Case

(NANTUCKET, Mass.) — Sporting a gray suit and glasses, Kevin Spacey appeared Monday at a Massachusetts courthouse where a judge is set to hold a hearing in the case accusing the disgraced actor of groping a young man at a Nantucket bar in 2016.

Spacey’s appearance comes somewhat as a surprise as he was not required to attend the hearing and has stayed away from the courthouse except for a brief hearing in January, which he also tried to avoid.

The 59-year-old former “House of Cards” actor, who has pleaded not guilty to a charge of indecent assault and battery, did not comment as he walked in with his lawyers. Spacey faces up to 2 ½ years in jail if convicted.

Spacey’s attorneys have stepped up their attacks on the credibility of the man who brought the allegations. In court documents filed Friday, defense attorney Alan Jackson accused the man of deleting text messages that support Spacey’s claims of innocence.

It’s the only criminal case that has been brought against the two-time Oscar winner since his career fell apart amid a flurry of sexual misconduct allegations in 2017.

The case first came to light that year when former Boston TV anchor Heather Unruh said Spacey got her son drunk and then sexually assaulted him at the Club Car, a popular restaurant and bar on the resort island off Cape Cod.

Unruh’s son told police that he wanted to get a picture with Spacey and went over to talk to him after his shift ended at the Club Car, where he worked as a busboy. The man said Spacey bought him several drinks and tried to persuade him to come home with him before unzipping the man’s pants and groping him for about three minutes.

The accuser told police that he tried to move Spacey’s hands, but the groping continued, and he didn’t know what to do because he didn’t want to get in trouble for drinking. The man said he fled when Spacey went to the bathroom.

Spacey’s lawyers have called the allegations “patently false” and accused the man of lying in the hopes of making money in a civil case against Spacey. They argued that the two engaged in nothing more than “consensual flirtation” and questioned why, according to the man’s story, he did not object or try to move away if he was being assaulted.

Spacey’s attorney urged the court in Friday’s motion to order prosecutors to hand over a “complete and unaltered” forensic copy of the accuser’s cellphone, saying newly produced evidence confirms he “deleted exculpatory text messages and provided falsified screenshots of his conversation from the night in question to law enforcement.”

Spacey’s lawyer is also seeking any communications about the case made by a top prosecutor in the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office who disclosed that his sister is friends with the accuser’s mother.

Judge Thomas Barrett has ordered the Club Car to hand over any surveillance footage taken between 5 p.m. July 7, 2016, and 3 a.m. July 8, 2016.

“It’s just disgusting,” sighs Ava DuVernay.

At the time Trump, then a PR-hungry NYC real estate baron who occasionally served as his own publicist, sensed an opportunity for some headlines and inserted himself into the case, inflaming racial tensions with frequent comments to news programs along with newspaper ads, purchased for $ 85,000, calling the boys “crazed misfits” and urging the state of New York to “bring back to the death penalty,” essentially calling for their pre-trial execution. Judge Orders File In Jussie Smollett Criminal Case Unsealed

CHICAGO (AP) — A judge in Chicago has ordered the file in the Jussie Smollett criminal case unsealed.

Cook County Judge Steven Watkins said Thursday that while there are good arguments in favor of keeping the file sealed, the “Empire” actor forfeited his rights to keep the case sealed to protect his privacy by talking to the media before and after prosecutors dismissed the charges against him.

Smollett had been charged with 16 counts alleging he lied to police when reporting he’d been the victim of a racist, anti-gay attack in January. Police insist the actor, who is black and gay, staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary and wanted publicity.

Prosecutors dropped all charges with little explanation.

The criminal case was dismissed March 26. Smollett wanted the case sealed, saying that he had “the right to be left alone.”

Black Mississippi Strippers Awarded $3M In Workplace Discrimination Case

Gentlemen's Club Sign

Source: Mint Images / Getty

In the state capital of Jackson in Mississippi, five Black strippers were awarded $ 3.3 million in a workplace discrimination case. The women argued that their working conditions were far worse than that of their white counterparts.

The Independent reports:

Five African-American strippers have been awarded more than $ 3m (£2.36m) by a Mississippi jury after a judge ruled the women were forced to work in worse conditions than their white colleagues.

The women were awarded the damages following a year-long case against Danny’s Downtown Cabaret in Jackson, the state’s capital, which was sued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

The commission, which challenges workplace discrimination, said the club limited when black women could work and fined them $ 25 when they missed a shift. It alleged the white strippers were not subjected to those fines and were given flexible schedules.

The club was also accused of forcing black strippers to work at another Jackson establishment with lower pay and worse security, while Danny’s manager allegedly used a racial slur against a black dancer.

The lawyer for Danny’s is hoping to get the award reduced and if that effort fails, he promised to file an appeal.

Supreme Court Declines To Hear Military Medical Malpractice Case

The family of a young Navy nurse who died after military doctors allegedly failed to halt massive bleeding following childbirth won’t get a hearing in the nation’s highest court.

The Supreme Court on Monday denied a petition that sought to change what’s known as the Feres doctrine, a long-standing rule that bars active-duty military members from suing the federal government for injuries, including medical malpractice.

The justices declined to discuss the case of Navy Lt. Rebekah “Moani” Daniel, who was 33 in 2014 when she died following a massive postpartum hemorrhage at the Naval Hospital Bremerton, within hours of the birth of her daughter, Victoria.

In court documents, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she would have granted the petition. Justice Clarence Thomas dissented from the decision, arguing that it was up to the court to reconsider the rule in the absence of a decision by Congress. He noted that the court in recent rulings “twisted traditional tort principles” to allow certain veterans to seek damages for negligence.

“Such unfortunate repercussions — denial of relief to military personnel and distortions of other areas of law to compensate — will continue to ripple through our jurisprudence as long as the Court refuses to reconsider Feres,” he wrote.

Through a lawyer, the nurse’s widower, Walter Daniel, and her daughter, Victoria, now 4, argued that the court should amend the 1950 ruling to allow service members to sue for medical malpractice the same way civilians can.

“Sadly, the justice system remains closed to our family, our colleagues and the families who commit their lives to military service,” Daniel, 39, said in a statement Monday. “Victoria and I won’t have the opportunity to learn what led to Moani’s death, and to ensure others don’t experience the same tragedy.”

Andrew Hoyal, Daniel’s lawyer, said he was “clearly disappointed” at the decision but heartened at the responses from Thomas and Ginsburg.

“We knew from the beginning that this would be a long journey with even longer odds,” he said.

Rebekah Daniel died on March 9, 2014, at the Washington state facility. In a 2015 wrongful death lawsuit, her husband claimed that she died from botched medical care that failed to halt hemorrhaging of nearly a third of the blood in her body.

Daniel, a former Coast Guard officer, disputed the findings of a Navy autopsy that concluded Rebekah Daniel died of “natural” causes possibly linked to a rare, hard-to-prove complication of childbirth.

But that lawsuit and subsequent appeals were dismissed not based on the facts of the case but because of the Feres doctrine, which holds that active-duty members of the military can’t sue under the Federal Tort Claims Act for harm that they incur “incident to service.”

The ruling was last challenged in the high court more than 30 years ago when the justices voted 5-4 to uphold it. That decision drew a scathing dissent from Justice Antonin Scalia, who declared the rule should be scrapped. More recently, Justice Thomas also argued it should be amended.

Since then, however, the court has refused to accept two previous petitions that would have allowed reconsideration. The Daniel request beat the odds. Of the 7,000 to 8,000 cases submitted to the Supreme Court each term, only about 80 are accepted.

Congress has considered amending the Feres rule in the past but stopped short of action. In April, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) introduced H.R. 2422, which would allow active-duty service members to sue the government for damages caused by medical malpractice. The bill has been referred to the House judiciary committee.

Daniel said he would continue to work with lawmakers and advocates to change the rule.

“Our case and our fight is over — but it continues for other service members. Moani’s story has generated a groundswell of momentum to correct the injustice of Feres, and now this issue is going all the way to Capitol Hill,” the statement said.

The Cold Case That Haunted Author Mark Bowden for Decades

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

One was in fifth grade, the other seventh. Katherine Lyon and her older sister Sheila made the honor roll, kept spare change in piggy banks, and tacked posters of Kenny Loggins and John Denver to their bedroom walls. In the last week of March 1975, they vanished from a mall in Wheaton, Maryland, just north of Washington. Their disappearance transfixed the public and puzzled police. Weeks passed, and as it grew less likely that their daughters would be coming home, John and Mary Lyon grieved and wondered.

Mark Bowden, a rookie reporter with the Baltimore News-American, spent much of that spring writing about the missing Lyon girls. When the investigation came to a standstill, he and his colleagues moved on to the next story. He’s since published several nonfiction bestsellers, including Black Hawk Down and Hue 1968. The Lyon story has always bugged him, though. In 2015, the case resurfaced in the pages of the Washington Post, which reported that investigators in Maryland appeared to be closing in on a culprit. Bowden felt compelled to find out what was going on. “A story like that doesn’t really ever leave you,” he told me in a recent interview.

The result of his curiosity is The Last Stone, a gripping new book that seeks to differentiate itself amidst a surplus of true-crime titles, documentaries, and podcasts. Drawing on a deep cache of question-and-answer sessions between Montgomery County, Maryland. police and one of their chief suspects in the girls’ disappearance, Bowden gives us an eerily intimate look at what it can take to crack a cold case. It’s not the first time he has written about the interrogation of reputed criminals and terrorists. This time, though, he had access to dozens of hours of videotaped conversations.

Judge In Nation’s Longest Running Housing Discrimination Case Dies Before Final Victory

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) — A federal judge who worked until his recent death at age 96 left a historic trail of groundbreaking legal opinions. But one case outlived Damon Keith: the longest-running housing discrimination lawsuit in the United States.

Keith declared in 1971 that Hamtramck, a tiny Detroit-area city long known for Polish culture, had intentionally forced out blacks or cut them off from the community to make room for Interstate 75 and so-called urban renewal projects in the 1950s and ’60s.

Hamtramck finally agreed to offer 200 family housing units, as well as housing for senior citizens, for violating the constitutional rights of black residents. Yet even today — decades later — there still are three houses left to build. Keith, who died on April 28, won’t see the keys change hands, an unfortunate postscript for a judge whose steadfast enforcement of civil rights was the emblem of his career.

“The finish line will probably be this summer,” said Michael Barnhart, an attorney who has represented generations of black families in the litigation. “I know his health was declining, but I wanted him to be there after all these years.”

Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski said: “It’s bittersweet. The end really is around the corner.”

Keith, the grandson of slaves, was a judge for 52 years, first at the U.S. District Court in Detroit, followed by 42 years on a federal appeals court. He made history on the bench, ruling against the Nixon administration’s use of warrantless phone taps and ordering George W. Bush’s administration to open deportation hearings.

In the Hamtramck lawsuit, filed in 1968, Keith noted that blacks made up less than 15% of the city’s population but represented more than 70% of residents whose neighborhoods were broken up because of the path of I-75. He also cited other examples.

“The judge referred to it as the ‘black removal case,’” Barnhart said. “It was an extreme example of racial discrimination.”

After nearly a decade, Hamtramck agreed to offer housing at below-market rates to families that wanted to return. But that solution languished for many more years, due to political opposition and the city’s poor finances. By 2010, half of the 200 units were complete, and Keith proudly attended a ribbon-cutting at a new home on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Then work stalled again.

“The problem always was the city was broke,” Barnhart said. “Through the whole case we’ve tried to identify federal programs or county programs or state programs to help us put together the housing that was needed. That has been the fundamental problem.”

Keith had the case for virtually his entire career, keeping it until 2018 despite his promotion to the appeals court. In his 2014 biography, “Crusader for Justice,” the judge scoffed at critics who accused him of “social engineering.”

“If I see inequities … as it relates to discrimination and violation of the law, then I have broad authority to fashion a remedy,” Keith said.

Lemuel Sawyer, 61, and his sisters are among those who have benefited from Keith’s decision. His family was forced out when he was a boy, but he returned to Hamtramck in 2014 to live in a new two-story home. His parents are dead.

“To me, this is my mother’s home. This is my family’s home,” Sawyer said, speaking in his doorway on Goodson Street. “Judge Damon Keith — he saved the day. He gave us optimism.”

Hamtramck, a 2-square-mile (5.1-square-kilometer) city surrounded by Detroit, was a haven for Polish immigrants who worked in area factories. A park features a towering statue of St. John Paul II, who visited as a cardinal and as pope. But the city now is culturally diverse: Someone looking for a meal can find a pierogi on one side of Hamtramck and a kebab at the other. Most City Council members are Muslim. A mosque sits across the street from a Roman Catholic church.

“The greatest monument in Hamtramck to Judge Keith is the fact that most of the residents have learned to live together in peace,” city attorney James Allen said.

U.S. Government Tells Fashion Label in Supreme Court Case: Stop Trying to Make ‘FUCT’ Happen

Damian Dovarganes/AP

The U.S. Supreme Court held G-rated arguments over an R-rated word on Monday while debating whether “FUCT” is too scandalous to trademark.

The eight-year saga of an L.A.-based clothing line founded by artist Erik Brunetti came to Washington, D.C., as justices heard his case against the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

It started in 2011, when Brunetti’s trademark application for FUCT—which, according to CNN, stands for “Friends You Can’t Trust”—was denied on the grounds that it violated the Lanham Act. (Representatives for the brand did not respond to The Daily Beast’s request for comment.)

Seagram’s Heiress Clare Bronfman Pleads Guilty in NXIVM Sex-Cult Case

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid

Seagram’s heiress Clare Bronfman pleaded guilty Friday afternoon for her role in NXIVM, a purported cult in which women were allegedly branded and groomed for sex with the group’s leader.

Bronfman, 40, who was once NXIVM’s operations director and one of its largest donors, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to conceal and harbor illegal aliens for financial gain and fraudulent use of identification. The group’s bookkeeper Kathy Russell, 61, also pleaded guilty Friday to one count of racketeering conspiracy before U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis in Brooklyn federal court.

After initially fighting the charges, the two women are now the fourth and fifth defendants to plead guilty in the case, leaving NXIVM founder Keith Raniere to stand trial alone next month.

Prosecutor Asks For Review Of How Smollett Case Was Handled

(AP Photo)

CHICAGO (AP) — A state’s attorney in Chicago has asked the county’s inspector general to review how her office handled “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett’s criminal case.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said in a statement Friday that she pledges her “full cooperation” and welcomes the investigation from Inspector General Patrick Blanchard. Foxx says “ensuring that I and my office have the community’s trust and confidence is paramount to me.”

The Chicago Tribune reports that Blanchard wrote a letter Thursday informing Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and other county leaders about Foxx’s request.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and others have criticized the decision by Foxx’s office to drop charges against Smollett accusing him of filing a false report to police that he was the victim of a racist, anti-gay attack in January.

Jurors To Be Chosen In Case Of Group Accused Of Sex Slavery

(AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) — Jury selection is set to begin Monday for a trial expected to detail sensational allegations that a cult-like group based in upstate New York recruited sex slaves for its spiritual leader.

Potential jurors have been summoned to federal court in Brooklyn to fill out questionnaires in the sex-trafficking case against Keith Raniere and three co-defendants prosecutors say were part of an inner circle of enablers. They include wealthy heiress Clare Bronfman and TV actress Allison Mack.

Court papers allege the purported self-help group called NXIVM formed a secret society of women who were branded with Raniere’s initials and forced to have sex with him. The four defendants have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and other charges. Defense attorneys have insisted any relationship between Raniere and the alleged victims, including an unidentified actress and other women expected to testify against him at trial, was consensual.

After an initial screening of a pool of candidates, a jury will be picked in time for opening statements on April 29. Who jurors will see seated at the defense table that day remains an open question in wake of new allegations that Raniere exploited a teenage girl. His co-defendants have since sought separate trials and engaged in plea negotiations.

Two other women charged in the case, former NXIVM executive Nancy Salzman and her daughter, Lauren, have already pleaded guilty.

Lauren Salzman entered her plea at a hearing that did not appear on any public calendar, and prosecutors had portions of a transcript blacked out. That’s led to speculation she may cooperate against alleged cult members at trial.

Salzman admitted holding a women from Mexico hostage in an upstate home for more than two years under threat of having her deported “if she did not complete labor requested by myself and others,” according to the redacted transcript.

Bronfman is a daughter of the late billionaire philanthropist and former Seagram chairman Edgar Bronfman Sr. Mack is best known for her role as a young Superman’s close friend on the series “Smallville.”

The jury questionnaire covers several topics, including asking candidates for their opinions about “rich individuals,” about people who “engage in relationships with multiple sexual partners” and whether they “believe that people under the age of 17 should be able to consent to sex with adults.”

Trump Calls On FBI, DOJ To Review Jussie Smollett Case

CHICAGO (AP) — President Donald Trump is calling on the FBI and Department of Justice to review how Chicago prosecutors handled the case against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett.

Prosecutors offered little explanation and infuriated Chicago’s police chief and mayor this week when they dropped charges against Smollett related to making a false police report. Yet prosecutors still insist the actor faked a racist, anti-gay attack on himself in January.

Trump tweeted early Thursday that prosecutors’ handling of the case was “an embarrassment” to the country, and called on the federal agencies to review what he called an “outrageous” case.

Smollett’s attorney says two brothers who claim they worked with the actor to stage the attack are lying. Investigators alleged Smollett staged the attack with the hopes of gaining attention and advancing his career.

Pooch Hall Reaches Plea In Drunk Driving Case

Remember when former The Game and current Ray Donovan actor Marion “Pooch” Hall was arrested on a drunk driving and and child endangerment charges where he was found in a crashed car with his 2-year-old son riding on his lap? Well, fortunately for him, he’s not going to have to go to jail.

Hall, the married father of 4, was able to plea his way into a probation and alcohol treatment agreement, People.com reports.

On Tuesday, the Ray Donovan actor admitted to driving under the influence in October while his 2-year-old son Djulian Bryant sat in his lap, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE.

Hall, 45, pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor for driving with a blood alcohol content over .08 percent and another for child endangerment.

Under the terms of his plea agreement, Hall received a three-year sentence of probation, a mandatory three-month residential alcoholic treatment program, and one year of parenting classes. The actor’s driving license was also suspended for six months, according to the D.A.’s Office.

Hall told a fan on Instagram recently that he would “never let his kid drive in an unsafe situation” which when you think about it sounds a little disingenuous, because who would let a child drive a car at all? See the exchange in his Instagram comments…and his cute son, Djulian, below.

R. Kelly Has Been Released from Jail After Posting $100,000 Bail in a Sex Abuse Case

(CHICAGO) — R. Kelly walked out of a Chicago jail Monday after posting $ 100,000 bail that allows him to go free while awaiting trial on charges that he sexually abused four people dating back to 1998, including three underage girls.

Hours earlier, the R&B star pleaded not guilty to the allegations after spending the weekend behind bars. He said little during the brief arraignment, telling the judge only his name. His lawyers spoke on his behalf.

The singer-songwriter was arrested Friday on 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse. A judge set bond at $ 1 million, meaning Kelly had to post 10 percent of that amount to be released. Court records show a 47-year-old woman from the Chicago suburb of Romeoville, Illinois, posted the $ 100,000 bail and identified herself on the bond slip as “a friend” of Kelly, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Kelly will be forbidden from having any contact with females younger than 18.

The black van that took the entertainer away from the jail stopped in the parking lot of a large downtown McDonald’s. He did not immediately emerge, but some members of his entourage stood outside the vehicle and a dark-colored Mercedes-Benz parked next to it.

The McDonald’s, a popular tourist attraction, was known as Chicago’s Rock ‘n’ Roll McDonald’s before being remodeled and losing its music theme.

The recording artist has been trailed for decades by allegations that he violated underage girls and women and held some as virtual slaves. Kelly has consistently denied any sexual misconduct, and he was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008.

Attorney Michael Avenatti, who said he represents two Kelly accusers, said his legal team gave prosecutors a second video Monday that shows Kelly sexually abusing a minor. Avenatti previously gave prosecutors video evidence that he said showed Kelly having sex with an underage girl.

Avenatti said the second video involves a 14-year-old girl. He said the footage from 1999 or 2000 is about 55 minutes long, but he did not say if it was the same 14-year-old girl seen in the first video he turned over to the authorities.

“The conduct in the tape can be described as nothing short of outrageous, illegal. It leaves no question as to Mr. Kelly’s guilt,” Avenatti said.

Avenatti said he is aware of a third tape, but he did not provide details.

Defense attorney Steve Greenberg reiterated at a news conference that Kelly has done nothing wrong and said no one has shown him any evidence to the contrary.

“Everybody is entitled to a defense. Everybody is entitled to the presumption of innocence. We should all be taking a step back. Let’s see what happens, what the evidence is and how this plays out,” Greenberg said.

Details of the allegations against Kelly emerged Saturday when the prosecution released four detailed documentsone for each accuser — outlining the basis for the charges. The allegations date back as far as 1998 and span more than a decade.

A girl who attended Kelly’s child pornography trial in 2008 got his autograph after a court session. He later invited her to his home in the Chicago suburb of Olympia Fields, where they had sex multiple times starting the following May, when she was 16, according to the documents, which said he also slapped, choked and spit on the girl.

In 1998, another girl reported meeting Kelly at a restaurant where she was having a 16th birthday party. Kelly’s manager gave her the singer’s business card and suggested she call Kelly. The girl’s mother heard the exchange, took the card and told the manager her daughter was 16.

But her daughter later retrieved the card from her purse. She contacted Kelly, who told her to take a cab to his studio, where they had sex periodically for a year, the documents said. After the first encounter, she was given an envelope of cash.

In early 2003, a Chicago hairdresser told prosecutors that she thought she was going to braid Kelly’s hair, but he pulled down his pants and instead tried to force her to give him oral sex. The woman, who was 24, was able to pull away, but Kelly ejaculated on her and spit in her face, the documents said.

Kelly’s DNA was found in semen on one of the accuser’s shirts, and semen found on a shirt worn by another was submitted for DNA testing, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said. It was not clear when the accusers turned the shirts over to authorities.

Rising from poverty on Chicago’s South Side, Kelly broke into the R&B scene in 1993 with his first solo album, “12 Play,” which produced such popular sex-themed songs as “Your Body’s Callin’” and “Bump N’ Grind.” He has written numerous hits for himself and other artists, including Celine Dion, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga.

The jury in 2008 acquitted Kelly of child pornography charges that centered on a graphic video that prosecutors said showed him having sex with a girl as young as 13. He and the female allegedly seen with him denied they were in the 27-minute video, even though the picture quality was good and witnesses testified it was them, and she did not take the stand.

Each count of the new charges carries up to seven years in prison, making it possible for Kelly to receive up to 70 years. Probation is also an option.

The walls began closing in on Kelly after the release of a BBC documentary about him last year and the multipart Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly,” which aired last month. Together they detailed allegations that he held women against their will and ran a “sex cult.”

This Olympic Champion’s Case Could Change Sports’ Gender Rules Forever

(LAUSANNE, Switzerland) — The longtime standoff between Olympic champion Caster Semenya and track and field’s governing body over issues of gender, hormones and performance in sports reached a pivotal phase on Monday as a key tribunal began hosting a planned five-day hearing in a case that could have massive repercussions throughout sports.

The two-time 800-meter gold medalist from South Africa came and went from the offices of the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday without addressing reporters after a marathon opening session, but her legal team and IAAF lawyers were still jockeying for position in the court of public opinion.

Both sides acknowledged that the ruling in the case — which isn’t expected until late March — could have huge implications, notably over where to draw the line between the genders and how to ensure fairness in top-tier competition.

Semenya’s lawyers issued a statement during the 10-hour session criticizing the IAAF’s release of a list of names of five experts that they planned to put forward to make their case. Her legal team said that maneuver violated the spirit of confidentiality over the proceedings “in an effort to influence public opinion.”

Her team of four lawyers said that it had received the three-judge panel’s OK to release the names of its own experts on Tuesday.

Insisting on the need for fairness, the IAAF defended “eligibility standards that ensure that athletes who identify as female but have testes, and testosterone levels in the male range, at least drop their testosterone levels into the female range in order to compete at the elite level in the female classification.”

The IAAF has proposed eligibility rules for athletes with hyperandrogenism, a medical condition in which women may have excessive levels of male hormones such as testosterone. Semenya wants to overturn those rules.

The scheduled five-day appeal case is among the longest ever heard by the sports court. CAS secretary-general Mathieu Reeb expressed hope for a decision by the three-judge panel by the end of March.

Neither of the delegations spoke on the way out of Monday’s proceedings.

“The core value for the IAAF is the empowerment of girls and women through athletics,” IAAF president Sebastian Coe said as the day began. “The regulations that we are introducing are there to protect the sanctity of fair and open competition.”

A colleague then pulled Coe away from reporters and said he wouldn’t say more.

The IAAF wants to require women with naturally elevated testosterone to lower their levels by medication before being allowed to compete in world-class races from 400 meters to one mile.

Reeb said the case was “unusual and unprecedented” and said the decision “will be important.”

South African lawyer Norman Arendse, whose is helping present the case for Semenya, called it “a highly confidential process.”

Colin Kaepernick And Eric Reid Settle Case With NFL For Undisclosed Settlement

Turn issues that may arise during the Super Bowl into teachable moments for kids

Source: San Jose Mercury News / Getty

After nearly two years of a back and forth battle with the NFL, Colin Kaepernick has settled his lawsuit with the league.

In 2016, in response to the police killings of innocent and unarmed Black men, Kaepernick started kneeling in protest during “The Star Spangled Banner.” The whole thing caused a national discussion on whether his actions were unpatriotic. The NFL instated a rule that forbid players form kneeling during the anthem. (The rule has since been suspended.) The NFL was so perturbed by Kaepnerick’s actions that there were rumblings that they weren’t planning on renewing his contract. He opted out of his contract and filed a collusion case against the league, along with teammate Eric Reid, who also knelt with Kaepernick. Reid stayed on for the 2017 season but they didn’t renew his contact after that season.

Now, two years later, the league has settled the case with Reid and Kaepernick, suggesting that there was a good chance they would lose the case if it had gone to trial.

Kaepernick’s lawyer Mark Geragos released this statement regarding the matter.

While Kaepernick and Reid aren’t speak about the amount of the settlement, NFL officials told columnist Mike Freeman that the number is between $ 60-80 million.

Police Questioning ‘Persons Of Interest’ In Smollett Case

CHICAGO (AP) — Detectives are interviewing two “persons of interest” who surveillance photos show were in the area of downtown Chicago where “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett said he was attacked last month, police said Thursday.

The two men aren’t considered suspects but may have been in the area at the time Smollett said he was attacked, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Smollett said two masked men shouted racial and homophobic slurs before attacking him and putting a rope around his neck around 2 a.m. on Jan. 29.

Guglielmi told The Associated Press that the two men are the same people shown in surveillance photos released last month by police. Guglielmi said the men were identified through advanced technology, interviews with Smollett and witnesses, and transportation records.

Smollett, who is black and openly gay, told ABC News in an interview that aired earlier Thursday that he believes the people of interest are the ones who attacked him.

“I don’t have any doubt in my mind that that’s them,” he said. “Never did.”

No arrests have been made in the case. Police said they have not found surveillance video that shows the attack but that the investigation is ongoing.

Smollett also told the ABC News that people who question his narrative of the attack were “ridiculous” to think he would lie. Smollett has said he was attacked while out getting food at a Subway restaurant.

“I’ve heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative,” he said. “I’m not gonna go out and get a tuna sandwich and a salad to meet somebody. That’s ridiculous. And it’s offensive.”

He said he didn’t remove the rope from around his neck before police arrived “because I wanted them to see.”

The singer and actor said the attackers also yelled “this is MAGA country,” referencing President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. Smollett said earlier reports from some media outlets that his attackers were wearing “MAGA” hats were inaccurate.

“I didn’t need to add anything like that,” he said. “I don’t need some MAGA hat as the cherry on top of some racist sundae.”

Smollett said he didn’t want to call police at first, but that his friend and creative director, Frank Gatson, called on his behalf. Smollett also said he didn’t initially want to give police his cellphone because the device contained private content and phone numbers.

Smollett later gave detectives heavily redacted phone records that police have said are insufficient for a criminal investigation.

Word is Tekashi 6ix9ine is already dropping dime on his former associates. A few members of the Brownsville rapper’s entourage have been charged with shooting at Chief Keef.

According to TMZKintea McKenzieAnthony Ellison and Denard Butler have indicted in crimes that all share a connection to Tekashi69.

Reportedly, McKenzie, who also goes by Kooda B, was indicted soon after Tekashi spoke to investigators, and he was tagged as the shooter in the incident that occurred in Times Square last June. No one was injured, but afterwards footage was revealed of Tekashi essentially putting a $ 30K bounty on Chief Keef’s cousin, Tadoe.

However, according to the authorities, McKenzie was paid $ 10K to shoot Sosa, but fortunately for the Chicago rapper he missed. McKenzie is still on the lam.

Currently, Ellison is in custody for allegedly kidnapping Tekashi (seriously, back in July 2018) while Butler got picked up by ATF just today (Jan. 30).

Tekashi has been in the clink since November and is facing federal racketeering charges. Considering the Brownsville rapper was an admitted troll and truly not ’bout that life, expect him to keep singing. Otherwise, he’s looking at 32 years to life in prison.

‘Untouchable’ Makes the Case for More Lenient Sex Offender Laws in America

Meerkat Media Collective

According to Untouchable, there’s a reason most Americans think sex offenders, and pedophiles in particular, are incurable, and thus destined to relapse: 2002’s McKune v. Lile, in which Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in a plurality opinion that there was a “frightening and high risk of recidivism” for such predators, and that “the rate of recidivism of untreated offenders has been estimated to be as high as 80 percent.” That statement has since been used in numerous legal verdicts as well as to support countless pieces of state and local legislation aimed at curbing the rights of those found guilty of crimes against kids. In doing so, it’s become de facto common wisdom, almost universally accepted as a bedrock truth about individuals who possess child pornography or abuse (or have improper relations with) a minor.

The problem? The sole piece of evidence that led Justice Kennedy to make such a bold claim came from a 1986 Psychology Today article written by Ronald Longo, a counselor who ran a treatment program in an Oregon prison—and there was absolutely no statistical basis for his “80 percent” assertion. Moreover, Longo himself has since rejected that figure.

Untouchable, a documentary about sex offenders written, directed and produced by David Feige—which arrives on home video and VOD on January 15, after winning  the Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival—doesn’t drop that bombshell revelation until after its midway point, which in journalistic terms is akin to burying the lede. Nonetheless, Feige’s delay does little to neuter its impact, given that he spends the early portions of his non-fiction film incisively investigating multiple sides of the sex-offender issue. From victims and perpetrators, to activists who want to throw the convicted away and lose the key, it’s an eye-opening look at a thorny topic that, on the face of it, probably doesn’t strike many as very complex or controversial at all.

T.I. Only Has To Pay Up $300 Fine In Disturbing The Peace Case

T.I. Hosts Voter Registration Drive and Community Cookout

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty

T.I. had a bit of legal trouble to contend with after getting into it with his gated community’s security guard last May, leading to a handful of charges. The rapper and actor pleaded no contest to the event and will pay a $ 300 fine to clear the matter with the courts.

The Blast reports:

The rapper’s lawyer, Steven Sadow, tells The Blast he was in court with T.I. on Thursday where he agreed to a sweet plea deal.

We’re told T.I. pled no contest to a city ordinance violation, which is basically cursing in public. He paid a $ 300 fine and all other charges were dropped.

Back in May, the rapper was arrested for simple assault, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness following an incident with a security guard, Euwan James, who works for the community where he lives.

T.I. told The Blast the incident was motivated by “white cops in a very white area.” He also said he never laid a hand on the guard. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Prosecutors claimed the rapper was “yelling profanities at Mr. James, including cuss words and racial slurs, contrary to the laws of this state.”

As the outlet states, this will all be behind Tip after paying off the fine.

Judge Issues Orders Of Protection In Cardi B Case

(AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge has issued orders of protection against platinum rapper Cardi B in a case involving a melee at a New York strip club.

Cardi B appeared in court Friday after a summons was issued on Oct. 1 for misdemeanor reckless endangerment and assault.

Her lawyer has said she didn’t harm anybody.

Police said Cardi B and her entourage were at the club when she argued with a 23-year-old bartender. They say a fight broke out during which chairs, bottles and hookah water pipes were thrown, slightly injuring the woman and another employee.

Cardi B’s “Invasion of Privacy” is among the nominees announced Friday for the 2019 Grammy Awards’ album of the year. She scored a total of five nominations.

Tisha Campbell-Martin Pays Over $100k To Buy Back Royalties In Bankruptcy Case

Tisha Campbell-Martin has reportedly reached a deal to buy back the rights to collect her royalties that she relinquished as part of her bankruptcy case.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Tisha and her estranged husband Duane Martin have reached a settlement with the trustee. She will reportedly pay $ 115,000 in two installments in order to obtain her residual rights. Martin will pay $ 60,000 in one installment and $ 55,000 in another within 90 days of a court’s approval of the settlement.

The former couple have been battling over the residuals for months and, as noted in the report, since the bankruptcy was filed, the trustee has collected $ 300,000 in royalties.

The docs state, “Since December 2017, the debtors have been in the process of ending their marriage and in February 2018, Ms. Campbell filed for divorce from Mr. Martin … In connection with that process and Ms. Campbell’s stated attempt to unravel a long history of Mr. Martin’s control over their joint finances, Ms. Campbell engaged new representation with regard to the dispute described in the Agreement.”

The actress previously accused her ex of hiding money from her during their marriage. She also told the trustee that during their marriage, Duane was responsible for managing all their financials, including collecting her residuals.

Campbell-Martin filed for divorce earlier this year after 20 years of marriage. She and Duane were reportedly legally separated in December 2016.

The Weekend Reset: The case for grown-up pumpkin carving parties

It’s Friday. Looking for something to switch up your weekend, or to give you an excuse to relax a little? That’s what the Weekend Reset is for. Each week contributor Tim Johnstone pulls together five things to get your weekend started. Could be something to read or watch, something to eat or listen to, or even something to do. Enjoy the weekend fellas.

PLAN: A pumpkin carving party is the best kind of fall gathering.

I had never been to a pumpkin carving party until my friend had a series of them over the past few years. Our group of friends enjoyed these parties so much. So much. Our friend went all out for these affairs (I am not even kidding). The food. The decor. The baked treats. And the warm adult beverages. You don’t need to go all out though. Find a good fall-friendly dish to serve (like, say, a Pork and Tomatillo stew), get yourself the warm beverage (yes, see below), and invite your pals. You’ll need bowls to collect the pumpkin seeds and garbage bags for everything else. You should get typical party supplies (cups, plates, napkins and cutlery). While you could ask people to bring their own candles (definitely have them bring their own carving tools), having some on hand is a good idea. We also had people vote on their favorites which seemed to be a hit.

PREP: Up your Jack-O-Lantern game.

There was a time when I was a pumpkin carving purist: you draw your own face and you carve it. And then I realized you can make some super fun jack-o-lanterns with templates. I have used one or two myself over the last few years. Whether you are hosting a pumpkin carving party or going to one, or just making your front door a little less egg-worthy, these make carving great pumpkins easier. You can find them in lots of stores this time of year (they’re often included in pumpkin carving kits), or all over the internet. Like here. Or here. And here. A google search for “halloween pumpkin templates” will keep you busy as well.

EAT: A simple one-pot dish that celebrates the season.

Pork and Tomatillo Stew from Food & Wine

Let’s face it. In the past this was the time of the year we were meant to be packing it on for the upcoming winter months. Wait. That’s bears. And squirrels. But for reals – this is when we can, without guilt, turn to comfort food and old favorites. It is also a great time to discover new favorites. That’s where this comes in. Pork and tomatillo stew. A hearty dish with vegetables and tomatillos with a seasoned pork that nearly shreds itself. Oh, and this is a perfect dish to serve at a pumpkin carving party. Just saying.

DRINK: It’s time for delicious warm adult beverages. Start here.

Hot Apple Cider Rum Punch from Brown Eyed Baker

Hot Apple Cider Rum Punch. This is as easy as it gets. Just as important, it’s an easy recipe to double. Or triple. Because people will drink this. And then go back for more. In this way, it is kind of dangerous, but moderation in all things, right? It tastes like fall, pumpkin-spice be damned. You can even make it with Honeycrisp Cider. Personally, I would add some cloves but that’s me. Finally, it is a perfect drink for a…wait for it…pumpkin carving party.

READ: A Ray Bradbury short story that will creep you out.

Or, if you prefer, listen. True story – I heard this read to me before reading it myself, when I was in high school. It has stayed with me since. It is not one of Bradbury’s best known stories, but it is one of his darkest. It’s a quick read that seems, as is the case with Bradbury, ahead of it’s time.
