HBCUs And Student Loan Debt: How Not To Get Caught Up

TODAY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT GRADUATES OF HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, AND STUDENT LOAN DEBT. WHAT IS THE LATEST?

A recent article in The Wall Street Journal caught my eye. In it, the authors note that while historically Black colleges and universities have helped millions of Black students achieve financial prosperity, they may now be hindering some of those they seek to help due to high student debt loads. This morning, I want to walk out listeners through what is happening, why it is happening, and what can be done to avoid putting themselves or their family members in this situation.

WHAT, SPECIFICALLY, DID THE WALL STREET JOURNAL’S RESEARCH FIND?

What they uncovered is a really big deal, Tom. Looking at the Department of Education data from 2017, the article’s authors found that while America’s 82 four-year HBCUs make up just 5% of four-year institutions, they account for more than half of the 100 schools with the lowest three-year student-loan repayment rates.

Perhaps more importantly, they found HBCU alumni graduate with about $ 29,000 in mean federal loan debt. This number is 32% higher than graduates of other public and nonprofit four-year schools. Additionally, most HBCU grads are unable to pay down any of their original loan balance in the first few years out of school. This means that during their initial working years, they continue to accrue interest on these loans, adding to their burden.

WHAT FACTORS ARE THE GREATEST CONTRIBUTORS TO THESE NUMBERS?

It all comes down to wealth. Black families have the least household wealth among racial groups in the U.S., according to Federal Reserve data. Black Americans have lower average incomes and a smaller percentage own homes compared to the broader population. This resource gap pushes Black students to turn to student loans to finance their higher education costs. Add to this the fact that tuition increases have outstripped inflation – let alone wage growth – over the past 3 decades, amplifying the problem. Finally, many HBCUs have fewer resources and smaller endowments, limiting their ability to provide financial relief to low-income students.

IS IT ONLY BLACK GRADUATES OF HBCUS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH STUDENT DEBT?

It is not. Nearly half of Black student loan borrowers who were freshmen at any college in the 2003-2004 school year ended up defaulting on a student loan within a year of the repayment period beginning. That is twice the rate of white borrowers. The article notes research by a Columbia University professor found that even controlling for socioeconomic status, Blacks have bigger debt burdens than whites.

Again, this is compounded by wealth disparities, especially the wage gap. According to the Economic Policy Institute, Black college graduates between ages 21 and 24 earned nearly 17% less per hour, on average, than white graduates. So not only to Black graduates have higher debt loads, after graduation they often have fewer resources with which to pay them.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE?

From the university perspective, many HBCUs are already working to address the issue. Some are reducing tuition rates. Others are limiting the amount students can borrow for non-tuition expenses like housing or personal expenses. And many HBCUs are shifting their course offerings and curriculum to focus on higher paying majors.

These are important steps. More broadly, universities should work to reduce non-instructional expenses for students. In terms of policy changes, the amount available to low-income students through the federal Pell grant program could be raised to reflect tuition increases. Expanding employer tuition assistance tax incentives would also help college graduates when they entered the workforce.

WHAT SHOULD LISTENERS KEEP IN MIND WHEN IT COMES TO STUDENT LOANS?

For families, there are long-term and short-term solutions. If you are preparing for your children to go to college and you have some time, the best thing you can do is to start saving now. The two most common vehicles are 529 plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts.

The 529 plans are offered in various states and typically give you a menu of investment options to choose from. Funds can be withdrawn tax-free only for qualified education expenses such as tuition, books, and room and board. Coverdell Education Savings Accounts also allow your investments to grow tax-free, as long as they are used for qualified education expenses. Coverdell accounts are limited to a maximum of $ 2,000 per year, while 529 plans generally have higher contribution limits.

In the short-term, if you or your kids are taking out loans, you want to keep the amount as small as possible. This means not adding onto your loan amount for extras like meals or housing, if at all possible. Living a spartan lifestyle while in school will mean you are not burdened by excessive loans after. And once you do graduate, take advantage of income-based repayment plans on federal loans. This will limit your annual payments to 10 percent of your total income, giving you more breathing room for living expenses, and to save and invest.

Just a few days after surrendering to police over a felony car theft accusation, TMZ is reporting that YBN Almighty Jay caught a universal beatdown in New York City just hours after he and his crew got into a scuffle with Lil Tjay.

In the videos below you can see YBN squaring up with LIL Tjay’s peoples in the afternoon outside of a Saks store in Manhattan before getting all kinds of hands and feet put on him later that night. A Female Cyclist Was Forced to Stop Mid-Race When She Almost Caught Up to the Men

A female cyclist who was soaring past her competitors during a renowned bicycle race in Belgium was abruptly forced to stop for several minutes when she came too close to the “very slow” men’s race ahead of her.

The cyclist, Nicole Hanselmann, described the “awkward moment” in an Instagram post after Saturday’s annual Omloop Het Nieuwsblad race, during which male cyclists were given an eight-minute head start.

As the race progressed, Hanselmann built a lead of almost two minutes against the other women cyclists and “almost saw the back of the men’s peloton.”

“[Maybe] the other women and me were [too] fast or the men [too] slow,” she wrote in the Instagram post.

Hanselmann, a 27-year-old cyclist and the 2017 national champion in Switzerland, said officials paused the women’s race to stop them from catching up to the men.

She said their race was halted for “five or seven minutes.” While she was given a head start to regain her lead when the race began again, Hanselmann told Cyclingnews that she lost her momentum when the race came to an abrupt stop, and her competitors soon gained ground. She ultimately finished in 74th place.

“It was a bit sad for me because I was in a good mood and when the bunch sees you stopping, they just get a new motivation to catch you,” Hanselmann also told Cyclingnews. “The race jury just said we had to neutralise the race because we are getting too close to the men.”

In a tweet on Saturday, race officials confirmed the “neutralisation” of the women’s race “due to a very slow [men’s] race” and then tweeted about five minutes later to announce the women’s race was restarting.

On social media, some said they wished officials had handled the situation differently.

Flanders Classics, which oversees the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, said in a statement that they needed to stop the women’s race briefly for “safety reasons.”

“In normal conditions, the men ride faster than the women and the gap gradually increases. This year, however, the men were slower than usual in the beginning of the race, with a speed below 30km/h at times. This circumstance caused a decreasing gap between the women’s and the men’s convoy. After 30 km, and for safety reasons, the organization had to intervene because the leader of the women’s race was getting too close to the convoy of the men’s race. At that point the elite women’s race was neutralized for about 5 minutes time. As soon as the safety was restored the women were able to continue, with respect for the previous time differences obtained during the race.”

The organization also said that in the future they would “consider letting the women’s race start a few minutes later than this year’s, to avoid any conflict between the men’s and women’s race.”

Robert Kraft Caught on Video Getting Handjob and Paying $100, Florida Authorities Say

Reuters

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was charged on Monday with soliciting prostitution in Florida after hidden cameras allegedly showed him paying for sex inside a massage parlor.

Kraft is one of 25 people charged with misdemeanors, State’s Attorney for Palm Beach County Dave Aronberg said at a press conference. Kraft, 77, is charged with two counts of of soliciting a person to commit prostitution and was issued a summons to appear in court in April. A low-level arrest warrant was also issued for Kraft, who does not reside in Florida. (A spokesperson for Kraft previously denied he committed any “illegal activity.”)

Police witnessed Kraft inside the “Orchids of Asia” massage parlor in Jupiter, Florida on two separate occasions, thanks to a “sneak and peek” warrant that allowed them to plant recording devices. In one instance, cameras recorded a woman hugging Kraft before he took off all his clothing and “laid face up on the massage table,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

Jordyn Woods, Kylie Jenner’s Best Friend, Allegedly Caught Making Out With Tristian Thompson

The Internet is reeling after reports emerged that model Jordyn Woods, Kylie Jenner’s best friend, was caught cheating with NBA star Tristian Thompson.

Thompson shares a daughter with Khloe Kardashian, who is Kylie Jenner’s older sister.

According to TMZ, Thompson and Woods were caught canoodling at a house party in Los Angeles. Witnesses tell the site that the Cavs player and Woods were all over each other making out in front of guests.

The rumors were seemingly confirmed when website Hollywood Unlocked posted the story, and Khloe and her best friend Malika commented under the post.

Khloe reportedly immediately broke things off with her baby daddy. Khloe & Tristian have been estranged since Tristian was caught with another woman in October of 2017 while Khloe was in her third trimester of pregnancy with their child.

The 27-year-old, 6’9 power forward was caught motorboating a woman at a Hookah Lounge in Washington D.C. at the time. The video footage emerged just days after Khloe gave birth. He was also spotted entering a hotel with a woman at a NYC hotel after a game.

Khloe was previously married to Lamar Odom, a Laker star whose career descended into shambles because of his addictions. Khloe believed she found love after heartache when she and Tristian linked up in August of 2016.

“He wants to have, like, five or six kids with me, and that’s lovely,” she said on her family’s show Keeping Up With The Kardashians  “We could start at one and then grow from there. But now, knowing I’m on birth control, it’s really scary. It’s like a really big step,” she optimistically gushed at the time.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. Caught The Fade In Boxing Training Session [Video]

The father of Floyd Mayweather Jr. made his mark in boxing as both a professional fighter and most notably as a trainer. However, a training session didn’t go Floyd Sr.’s way recently and he caught a fade but appeared to be fine shortly after.

TMZ Sports reports:

Floyd Mayweather Sr. — a former pro boxer who became one of the top trainers in the world — was at his son’s TMT boxing gym in Vegas this week, where he decided to spar with one of the younger guys.

It started off great … with Floyd Sr. stickin’ and movin’ and throwing some pretty quick shots — but, when the other guy started to fight back, it didn’t go well for the old man.

Floyd took a few clean shots to the head — sending him flying backward … and ended with the elder Mayweather lying flat on his back with his feet up in the air.

Before the jokes fly, Floyd Sr. is 66 years old and probably in better shape than men half his age. Anyone can catch the hands and it was just his time.

Caught By The Fuzz: A Brief History Of Fleece

Not long ago, synthetic fleece represented what men did not want in their clothing. It was as comfy, middle-aged, and suburban as a minivan. Not even a cool minivan; fleece was the Dodge Caravan of fabric. And no one wants to be seen in a Dodge Caravan. At a time when men were rediscovering the clothing of their grandfathers’ generation, natural fabrics and heritage cuts were the rule menswear, from tailoring to everyday casual wear, the thought being “What was so bad about cotton and wool? They’re comfortable, warm, and served us for hundreds of years before we went all space age.”

We’re fans of that sort of thinking–I often refer back to Archival Clothing’s resolutions, one of which is to wear wool and linen year-round. Part of the enjoyment of getting into men’s clothing (or any clothing) is discovering, taking inspiration from, and wearing clothing traditions that pre-date you. Maybe because the original fleece boom now significantly pre-dates people born in the mid 90s (and even the mid 80s), fleece has crept back into the conversation, and in the last year, it seems to be everywhere — from the usual outdoorsy sources like Patagonia and LL Bean to Antonio Ciongoli’s post-Eidos 18east collection to Engineered Garments’ weird cousin, Needles.  So what is fleece, and is it for you?

Imagine Wearing a Fuzzy Toilet Seat Cover

Patagonia gets most of the credit for the modern fleece jacket. In the 1970s, Yvon Chouinard’s company was looking to innovate in insulation for rock climbers and backpackers. Traditionally, these beardies wore wool sweaters, which worked well and looked great. But for obvious reasons, lighter, less absorbent fabrics would perform better. In his book, Chouinard cites as inspiration “a staple of North Atlantic fishermen, the synthetic pile sweater”–I can not for the life of me figure out what he’s talking about. If you know a North Atlantic fisherman from the 1970s or earlier, let me know.

In any case, Patagonia designers found synthetic pile at a fabric outlet (“pile” refers to fabric with loops, strands, or tufts of yarn standing up; some old military jackets are lined, for example, with woolen pile). Allegedly, their initial sweaters were made with stiff-backed polyester fabric intended for toilet seat covers. They worked with Malden Mills (which specialized in fabric for infant clothing known as “bunting”) to develop a friendlier version, and the Patagonia fleece was born. Malden Mills become Polartec, and thick, synthetic pile sweater soon became the outdoor standard for midlayer insulation.

Fleece collection from one of my favorite Instagrams, The Daily Obsessions.

Patagonia refined their fleece in the 1980s, adding bright colors and eventually patterns in the line to help them stand out from the competition, changing the texture of the fleece from hairier deep pile to finer fleece they called Synchilla, and making the sweater easier to put on with their snap-T design in 1985.

Fleecing America in the 1990s and 2000s

If you, like me, grew up in the 1990s, you associate fleece less with backpacking and more with the general performancification of casual clothing. The same general drive that put our moms in crinkly teal track suits and dads in bright ski jackets also encouraged everyone to wear fleece jackets as an outer layer, which, especially when they were cheaply made, seemed to have little real practicality. Fleece is light and not at all wind or waterproof. (The “right” way to wear it in cold / wet conditions is over a base layer and under a wind/water resistant outer layer–the fleece is insulation.)

In the 1990s, it seemed every mainstream/mall brand was making a synthetic fleece sweatshirt or jacket. GAP, Tommy Hilfiger, Old Navy. I had a sweet America by Perry Ellis fleece, which went great with a steel ball necklace and baggy jeans.

After reaching saturation, fleece became a punchline. Inexpensive and shapeless, it was an ideal garment for corporate personalization, in basic colors embroidered with your accounting firm’s name. It cemented its status as a fabric not for performance, but for total laziness, with the advent of the Snuggie, the microwavable-dinner-for-one of personal insulation.

In 2014, a Portlandia sketch depicted gear-obsessed couple Kath and Dave overwhelmed with wonder after discovering a fleece outlet. To me, that marks the low point in fleece’s relationship with culture. The cool kids, it seemed, were so over fleece, it was primed for a comeback.

The Golden Era? Fleece Returns

Given that nostalgia/retro fashion moves in semi-predictable cycles, maybe it was obvious. Adam Gopnik’s theory of nostalgia is that it runs in 40-year cycles. 40 years ago would be the late 1970s; prime time for performance fleece. Always a vintage outdoor gear enthusiast, Mordechai Rubenstein was posting on Mister Mort about fleece as far back as 2008.

Magazines like Japan’s GO OUT, which is like Outside magazine for people who are afraid of getting wet, glorified the sort of retro outdoor gear from the 70s that a vintage fleece jacket from REI or Patagonia exemplified. Stylewise, they slot in nicely next to other gear that trickled into the mainstream–60/40 jackets, down jackets, Cordura backpacks, etc.

And Patagonia, for which fleece jackets have always been a big seller, reissued retro versions of its fleece jackets, including deep pile, teddy-bear style fleeces. Arguably, they still do it best, although they now have separate categories for “casual fleece” and “technical fleece.”  I admit it’s a little bro-y, but I still love their retro-x jacket.

But fashion has recently taken it beyond post-heavy-duty-Ivy style, and people seem ready. 18East’s ivory fleece and block-printed fabric sold out immediately. Uniqlo and Christophe Lemaire made a nice jacket with an oversized collar. Haberdashers like H. Stockton and Sid Mashburn are selling it. It’s the backbone of designer Sandy Liang’s collection.  Streetwear brands like Cav Empt and Supreme have done versions (Supreme’s logo flip Patagonia fleeces are among the brands most sought after collector’s items). Kapital has done different versions; even a vest, the bro-iest fleece silhouette.

Some of these designs have made arguable improvements–some of these designs have real shape, and they certainly hang better than clingy 90s polar fleece. Some are made with blend fabrics rather than 100% polyester.

18East’s version is made in India and uses traditionally printed fabric to offset the fuzz.

The Uniqlo x Lemaire version.

Recent Supreme and Cav Empt fleeces.

A jacket and vest from Kapital.

A collaborative effort from Manastash and Mordechai Rubenstein.

The fleece comeback makes sense in a few ways, in addition to the cyclical factor: first, it fits in with the trend of “ugly” fashion over the last few years — see also Birkenstocks, chunky sneakers, etc. These jackets are associated not with elegance and refinement, but with goofiness, bagginess, and comfort. Choosing to wear one, when you could wear a more flattering jacket, is a statement of purpose. Second, there’s the appeal of the fuzzy. Like casentino wool or heavily napped flannel, there’s a coziness to a (quality) fleece fabric that just–feels nice. Like being wrapped in a teddy bear’s arms. Or a Snuggie.

Meet the Photographer Who Caught Bob Dylan in His Prime

Courtesy Jerry Schatzberg

A creative career that arcs from accomplished photographer to celebrated filmmaker is hardly unique. Robert Frank, Chris Marker, and Stanley Kubrick, to name a few, all began as still photographers and then made the leap to moviemaking. But few artists have left as indelible a mark on both pursuits as Jerry Schatzberg. In the ’60s, he photographed cultural icons—Jimi Hendrix, Edie Sedgwick, Fidel Castro—for magazines like Esquire, Vogue, McCall’s, and LIFE. In the ’70s, his earliest movies—Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970, with Faye Dunaway), The Panic in Needle Park (1971, with Al Pacino and Kitty Winn, who won Best Actress at Cannes), and Scarecrow (1973, with Pacino and Gene Hackman; Palme d’Or at Cannes)—would become touchstones of a fraught era.

But for sheer, sustained excellence, Schatzberg’s portraits of Bob Dylan stand alone. In an 18-month supernova of creative energy, from early 1965 through mid-1966, Dylan recorded and released three of the most influential albums ever made: Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde. Schatzberg met Dylan in the midst of that astonishing run, during the Highway 61 sessions in New York in ’65, and photographed him through ’66. (The famous, out-of-focus portrait gracing the cover of Blonde on Blonde is Schatzberg’s.)

A beautiful new book, Dylan by Schatzberg (ACC Art Books), brims with the best of those pictures. In an interview with The Daily Beast, the 91-year-old Bronx native discusses the rewards and challenges of working with Dylan, the real story behind that Blonde on Blonde picture, and making peace with his own fame—or lack of it. The interview, conducted by phone and at the Upper West Side apartment where Schatzberg has lived for five decades, has been edited and condensed for clarity and brevity. — BC
