Mutated gene is likely cause of 3-year-old girl’s severe disorder

A young girl with severe neurological symptoms finally has a diagnosis, following the discovery of a genetic mutation that likely caused the girl to experience a cascade of symptoms. Like a train hitting a missing section of rail, a mutated copy of the gene FBXO28 is suspected of causing one of the girl’s chromosomes to go off track — a frameshift mutation — leading to a host of neurological and developmental defects.

Cheryl Cole Slams Rumors That Her Mom Cause Liam Payne Split

Clearing the air. Cheryl Cole confronted reports that her mother, Joan Callaghan, influenced her split from Liam Payne.

“I hate responding to stuff esp at such difficult times but I cannot sit here and listen to such nasty, false articles regarding my mam. I don’t know why they involve her in stores about me,” the “Call My Name” songstress, 35, tweeted on Monday, July 2. “I can assure you she has absolutely nothing to do with any of it. I am a grown woman who is capable of dealing with my own life. She is a soft and kind woman who doesn’t deserve to be dragged into something that has nothing whatsoever to do with her.”

Cole’s statement comes one day after she and Payne, 24, revealed their split. “We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways,” the X Factor judge tweeted onSunday, July 1. “It’s been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.”

The pop star’s statement slammed British tabloid reports that Callaghan moved in with Cole and Payne shortly after they welcomed son Bear, 13 months. Also, according to the Daily Mail, Callaghan posed a “problem” in the former pair’s relationship and got “in the way.”

The One Direction alum, who shares son Bear, 13 months, with Cole, tweeted a similar statement at the same time.

The British singers, who started dating in 2015, have been dodging split rumors throughout their relationship. The “Familiar” songster spoke out about the reports in March, noting that the pair have normal fights, as most couples do.

“The funniest thing was a week before we were getting married. The next week we’re splitting up. And the thing is, for me, I just like to think we’re somewhere in the middle,” he told Lodon’s ES Magazine at the time. “You know, we have our struggles — like, of course I’m not gonna sit here and say that everything’s absolutely fine and dandy, because of course you go through different things, and that’s what a relationship is. But we go through them together as a family and that’s the most important thing for me.”

What was Verne Troyer’s cause of death, when did the actor play Mini-Me in Austin Powers and was he in Harry Potter?

VERNE Troyer was one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces in Hollywood in the 90s and 00s with a slew of hit roles to his name.

The star made famous in the Austin Powers movies, who tragically passed away, will go down in history as one of the acting community’s brightest stars. Here is what we know about him.

PA:Press Association

Who was Verne Troyer?

Verne Troyer was an American actor who was notable for his height which was caused by achondroplasia dwarfism.

This never stopped him achieving great heights – he was best known for playing Mini-Me in the Austin Powers series and he also starred in British film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as Griphook the Goblin.

The Michigan-born actor, unfortunately, had a sex tape leaked in 2008 by his then-girlfriend Ranae Shrider.

And then in 2009, he appeared on Celebrity Big Brother UK.

Although his film output declined over the years, he never stopped doing what he loved – he starred in the Keith Lemon film in 2012 and starred as The Gnome in Gnome Alone in 2018.

Verne and his girlfriend Brittney Powell appeared on Celebrity Wife Swap in 2015.

When did Verne Troyer die?

Verne passed away on April 21, 2018.

The star’s family confirmed the news with a statement on his Instagram page.

“It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today.

“Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh. Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible.

“Verne hoped he made a positive change with the platform he had and worked towards spreading that message every day.

What was the cause of his death?

At the time of writing it is not clear what his cause of death was.

His family, however, have issued a statement that says: “Depression and Suicide are very serious issues.

“You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another.

“And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help.”

The star was rushed to hospital with alcohol poisoning and had suicidal thoughts weeks before his death.

He was held for 72 hours after friends of the actor called emergency services to check up on him after becoming concerned he was “upset, drunk and suicidal.”

On April 24, 2018 it was reported he had a “very high” amount of alcohol inside his system when he died, his coroner has revealed, and that his death was being considered as a “possible suicide”.

When did he play Mini-Me in Austin Powers?

Verne starred as Mini-Me in the second and third Austin Powers movies – The Spy Who Shagged Me and Goldmember.

The character was a clone of Dr Evil and was identical to the maniacal villain in every way – except he was “1/8th the size”.

Mini-Me has very little dialogue in the films except for the occasional screen and he preferred to communicate with written language.

Austin Powers had been thwarted by Mini-Me on many occasions and proved himself to be even stronger than his original counterpart.

Symptoms and Treatment of Graves’ Disease: The Most Common Cause Of Hyperthyroidism

When the immune system of the human body attacks its own organs, the disease is called an autoimmune disorder, or disease. There are many types of these disorders, and one of the most common, is Graves’ Disease. This is the result of the immune system attacking the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ at the base of the neck, that helps modulate many bodily functions, through the production of the thyroid hormone.

Graves’ was first described in the mid-1800s by Dublin physician Matthew Graves, who treated women with heart palpitations and enlarged thyroid glands.

Web

Graves’ is the most common form of hyperthyroidism. When the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, it enlarges and overproduces the thyroid hormone. This can greatly increase the body’s metabolic rate, and can have serious consequences. Here are a few:

  • When the thyroid gland produces too much of the thyroid hormone, anxiety, distracted attention, nervousness, irritability, heat intolerance, and difficulty sleeping can result.
  • Gradually, the Graves’ disease patient can become fatigued, experiencing a rapid or irregular heartbeat, have increased perspiration, weight loss despite normal food intake, brittle hair, frequent bowel movements, and in women, light menstrual periods.
  • In some cases, the tissue and muscles behind the eye swells, making them bulge. The skin near the ankles may also develop a rash.

There are many concerns about Graves’. One of the most serious is a rapid or irregular heartbeat. If not cared for, there can be some serious damage to the heart muscle.

Both men and women can get this disease, but Graves’ occurs ten times more often in women than in men. Also, research has discovered that Graves’ most often begins in the 20’s and 30’s – during childbearing years.

There is often a genetic component as well. Those who acquire Graves’ often have family members who have other autoimmune diseases, like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Vitilago, Addison’s Disease, Type 1 Diabetes and Pernicious Anemia, and Lupus.

Medical researchers do not have absolute certainty as to which factors precipitate the immune system to attack the thyroid gland. But other risks, like recent illness, infection, or stress, are linked with developing Graves’ disease.

If a thyroid issue is suspected, blood tests are usually performed to determine levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxin, one of the circulating thyroid hormones.

TSH, produced by the pituitary gland, is the hormone that normally stimulates the thyroid. In Graves’ Disease, abnormal antibodies are present in the blood, which are detectable and mimic the actions of TSH, causing elevated thyroxin, even while natural TSH levels remain low.

A radioactive thyroid exam can also be done to assess thyroid function. The body needs iodine to make thyroid hormone; and by ingesting a small amount of radio labeled iodine, then later measuring how much of it is taken into the thyroid, a doctor can see how well the gland is producing. High iodine uptake indicates that the thyroid is making too much hormone, as is the case in Graves’ Disease.

The good news is that Graves’ disease is treatable. Here’s how:

  • In the U.S., an overactive thyroid is initially treated with radioactive iodine taken orally (as a capsule or drink.) The radiation helps to shrink the gland and permanently reduce its hormone output within three to six months. Radioactive iodine rarely has side effects, and the entire radioactivity is eliminated in the urine within two to three days.
  • Sometimes anti-thyroid drugs may be given initially to reduce hormone levels; in about a third of cases, taking these medications for a year or more can produce a long-term remission.

Pregnancy and Graves’ Disease

Graves often occurs in the 20’s and 30’s, peak childbearing years for women. As many as 30% of women who get Graves’ disease have been pregnant in the 12 months prior to the onset of symptoms. This suggests that pregnancy might be a Graves’ disease trigger for some women.

It is also one of the reasons why it is important to understand the challenges that Graves’ Disease brings to those who are pregnant or wish to become pregnant.

Pregnancy places stress on a woman’s body. Normal hormonal changes during pregnancy allow thyroid hormone levels to increase; such changes don’t adversely affect the pregnancy or the fetus. But untreated thyroid problems can cause the pregnancy to become hazardous. If a pregnant woman has symptoms of an overactive thyroid or notices a goiter, or swelling at the base of the neck produced by an enlarged thyroid gland, it is important that her doctor be contacted immediately.

However, the good news is that Graves’ Disease rarely commences during pregnancy. The research shows that most women who have been diagnosed with Graves’ Disease had symptoms before getting pregnant.

For those women who have Graves’ Disease and want to become pregnant, there are certain issues and strategies that should be taken into account. It is important to remember that untreated or poorly treated Graves’ can lead to complex physical problems:

  • Pre-Eclampsia
  • Pre-term birth
  • Heart problems
  • Placental abruption
  • Low birth weight
  • Still birth

Even though these consequences seem scary, it is also important to know that Graves’ Disease is usually well managed during a pregnancy. During this time, the pregnant woman must have access to her OB/GYN as well as her endocrinologist, the specialist who treats those with hormone issues.

Pregnancy sometimes creates changes in hormones that affect the thyroid, and these problems can affect the growing fetus. For some, in the first trimester the thyroid symptoms worsen, but as the body adjusts to pregnancy, the symptoms often improve.

There is no known, reliable treatment to stop the immune system from producing the antibodies that cause Graves’ disease. So, the general medical approach is a solid one: medication that is effective in slowing down production of thyroid hormone or blocking its action.

However, along with the medical approach are many case studies that suggest dietary and lifestyle treatments, offer some benefit in addressing autoimmunity, mainly because of the relationship between stress and autoimmune issues.

The general thinking, backed by substantive research is that stress sets off a chain reaction in the body that includes the release of the hormone cortisol that helps handle stressful situations. Cortisol also helps regulate immune responses. In small doses, the body’s reaction to stress is protective; higher or unrelenting amounts of stress have the opposite effect.

Researchers found, using mice, that exposure to high levels of corticosterone (the equivalent of cortisol in rodents) simulating chronic stress reduced the number of immune cells. This increased the number of cells that encouraged damaging inflammation compared to those that inhibit it.

This mechanism appeared more pronounced in females than in males and may explain, in part, the higher rates of autoimmune disease in women than in men. It also supports previous research that found that a high proportion (up to 80%) of patients with autoimmune disorders reported uncommon emotional stress before disease onset.

Thus, and unfortunately, not only does stress cause disease, but the disease itself also causes significant stress in the patients, creating a vicious cycle.

When stress becomes such a malevolent factor in the life of a patient, there are three lifestyle changes that are often suggested, in addition to the medical protocols, that help manage this factor.

First, is exercise. Walking even ½ hour a day, or swimming three times a week, helps with stress.

The next lifestyle change that has helped Graves’ patients is dietary – by replacing animal protein as much as possible with plant protein.

And the third deals with mind-body strategies, that can help with lessening stressful reactions: Yoga, meditation, guided imagery and even hypnosis.

Finally, Dr. Gary Conrad, an integrative medicine professional, has written an excellent article published in the November/December, 2007, issue of Explore magazine entitled: Spontaneous Remission of Graves’ Disease: A Spiritual Odyssey.

  • Dr. Conrad recommends the use of a multisystem, integrative approach that encompasses “all healing modalities” most appropriate to address an individual’s needs.
  • One key component to his healing was learning how to optimize the mind-body connection to achieve states of deep relaxation – what Dr. Conrad calls the “opposite of Graves’ Disease” Dr. Conrad’s article makes two key points about autoimmune conditions like Graves’ disease.
  • First, they can go into spontaneous remission over time – a focus of treatment should be trying to get the condition to “burn itself out.”
  • Secondly, stress is often a key precipitator in aggravating these conditions, and working to decrease or better manage stress can often balance immune system function and facilitate healing.

It is good to be aware of all the options, both medical and lifestyle, when dealing with the Graves’ Disease challenge. Often, if the medical and lifestyle options can work in concert, the Graves’ Disease patients usually feel better, and continue to live productive, active lives.

‘Daily Show’s’ Trevor Noah Destroys Trump’s Claim That Video Games Cause Gun Violence

Comedy Central

On Thursday afternoon, before the news broke that President Trump is planning to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, it was revealed that the president had hosted a White House roundtable discussion with critics of violent video games and game makers addressing whether or not playing these games can cause real-world gun violence.

President Trump appeared to blame video games for gun violence during a White House listening session last month with students, teachers and parents affected by mass shootings in the wake of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. “The video games, the movies, the internet stuff is so violent. It’s so incredible. I see it,” Trump said. “I look at some of the things [son Barron is] watching, and I say, ‘How is that possible?’ And this is what kids are watching. And I think you maybe have to take a look at it.”

The White House refused to allow journalists to cover the video-game summit, and later issued a vague statement reading, “As we continue to work towards creating school safety programs that protect all children, the president will be meeting with video game industry leaders and members of Congress to discuss violent video-game exposure and the correlation to aggression and desensitization in children,” said Lindsay Walters, a White House spokeswoman. “This meeting will be the first of many with industry leaders to discuss this important issue.”

Wi-Fi’s Main Security Protocal “Kracked” Major Cause For Concern For Android & Linux Users

KRACK Wi-Fi hack

Damn now we can’t even trust wi-fi anymore? Asking for the wi-fi password maybe dangerous even more so if you are an Android or Linux user since a protocol that governs all modern wi-fi routers has been found to have a major vulnerability.

When you’re setting your home wi-fi, your network is “protected” or secured by a WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2) and given the option of using a pre-shared key. It basically prevents your neighbors from seeing what sites you may visit or mooch off your internet service.

WPA2 replaced WEP due to it being flawed back in 2003, but it looks like we are going to need a new form of protection. A researcher by the name of Mathy Vanhoef revealed the major flaw in WPA2 and has named it KRACK (Key Reinstallation Attacks).  So what does it do? Basically, this flaw allows “man-in-the-middle attacks” opening up your network for ransomware and the injection of other malicious attacks on your computers.

Also, your most important information like bank accounts, credit cards, passwords, photos, emails and anything else you save to your computer is fair game to the hackers. If you are an Android or Linux user, you should be worried because KRACK is highly effective against devices that use those operating systems.

There is some good news in this story though, KRACK maybe highly potent but it requires the user to be closer to a router’s signal to connect to it. There also patches for vulnerability being rolled out.  Also, the “handshake” between your computer and a website you visit is just one precaution against those who mean to do you harm. So secure https sites are for the most part still secure when you visit them.

KRACK is still a proximity vulnerability requiring the hacker to be close your router so you can’t be hacked from anywhere around the globe. Still, with news of all these major breaches and hacks coming to light every day it still is a cause for concern.

Can’t these hackers be more productive and find Trump’s tax returns or hack Sallie Mae and wipeout student debt? Just saying.

Official Reveals the Cause of Deadly Ohio State Fair Ride Accident That Killed Teen

The manufacturer of an Ohio amusement park ride that broke apart, leading to the death of an 18-year-old last month, was caused by “excessive corrosion,” an official reportedly said.

Tyler Jarrell was killed and several more people were injured at the Ohio State Fair when the Fire Ball ride spun out of control, sending people flying through the air. Now, an official with the ride’s Dutch manufacturer says the ride was nearly 20-years-old, resulting in the “catastrophic failure,” CNN reports.

Albert Kroon, with KMG International, said in a statement that investigators have determined that “excessive corrosion on the interior of the gondola support beam dangerously reduced the beam’s wall thickness over the years,” according to CNN.

Kroon added that the company is working with safety experts to “develop an inspection protocol” to prevent future accidents.

The incident occurred at around 7:20 p.m. on July 26. Video footage of the malfunction showed the showed a large part of the structure flying into the air as bystanders screamed.

“We heard commotion on the ride. There was people on the ride like, ‘slow it down, it’s too fast,’ ” one witness, Julian Bellinger, told Good Morning America of the Fire Ball ride at the Columbus fair. “When I the people fall out, I just turned my head and I couldn’t watch it.”

Jarrell, of Columbus, died at the scene. In the wake of the incident, many who knew the teen told PEOPLE that he was heading into his senior year of school and had recently enlisted in the U.S. Marines.

“He was a very selfless person, he would always put others first,” Dillon Evans told PEOPLE of his friend.

“He loved to serve his community, so he wanted to serve his country. He was always doing things for people. He was ready to serve his country in all ways possible.”

“Sing it live!” the actor orders, after some audio trouble, in a clip posted Saturday by Kevin McCarthy, who reports for a D.C. Fox affiliate. Chris Van Vliet, Andrew Freund, Scott Carty and Xilla Valentine also appear to be doing their best to channel the iconic British girl group.

To see just how well the ragtag boy band nailed it, here’s part of the original with the new footage:

Expect their cover album out never.

”Transformers” hits theaters June 21.

Does Your Vision for Your Life Cause You to Look Up…or Down?

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a Cathedral.” ~ Antone de Saint-Exupery

Several years ago, while in Barcelona, Spain, I had the opportunity to visit Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi’s, one-of-a kind, “Sagrada Família.” While not officially a “cathedral” because it is not yet the seat of a Bishop, it is often thought of as such because it stands as high or higher than many ancient cathedrals. What is unique about the structure is that, while Gothic in design, it is also very “Art Nouveau” and unlike any other cathedral ever built; it is one-of-a-kind, in a class of its own. If you have ever seen pictures of it you’ll understand why I call it one of a kind. I encourage you to Google “Sagrada Família” and see for yourself–you’ll be rather stunned.

Gaudi designed and took over the construction of the project in 1883 and, the amazing thing is, to this day, it is still a work in progress. It stands higher than many skyscrapers; scaffolding and huge mechanical cranes loom in the skyline. The completion of the project is tentatively set for 2026, the centennial of Gaudi’s passing. It is said that he devoted the best of his years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Can you imagine holding such a grand vision and not living to see it come to full fruition?

One-hundred and twenty-eight years after his vision was cast, I humbly stood at the base of this monolithic structure and gazed skyward wondering how much more had to be done to complete his vision. My mind raced back to the year 1883 when there was little more than barren land and rocks in that spot and I imagined him standing there, looking up, seeing his masterpiece in its completed form. That’s what visionaries do–they see their dream in its completed form long before it is realized in the material world. The transformation of concrete and rocks into a cathedral happened before Gaudi’s workers ever broke ground…and the fact that they are still working on the manifestation of it proves it was a very big vision.

Do you have a vision for your life and, if so, how big is it? Can you see yourself living that life now, even if the outer manifestation of it isn’t yet visible? While many say you have to see it to believe it, others are saying, you have to believe it to see it. Which are you? This is where and when the foundation for a life worth living is established. The practice is to contemplate your life as Gaudi contemplated his cathedral–as a completed idea in the creative Mind of a Universe that knows no limitations. In other words, the sky really is the limit; the only caveat is that this creative Mind is waiting for you to upload the design blueprints known as your belief system. What is your vision for your life? Are you looking up, or looking down? Be mindful of where your predominate thoughts go because, whether you are aware of it or not, that is the design plan you are uploading.

Clearly, Gaudi believed in his vision, so much so that it had no alternative but to become a reality, even years after his passing. That is a powerful vision when it takes on a life of its own. Turning a pile of rocks into a cathedral isn’t difficult once you have the vision–the Universe conspires to support you in your vision if you are willing to stand in it, own it and act on it. We are all visionaries–that is to say, we each hold in our mind a vision for our life; what it can or can’t be, might or might not be, or, will or won’t be. So the question really isn’t, do you have a vision for your life–if you are alive you have a vision. The real question is, what is your vision? Are you looking down at the rocks or up to the sky? Remember, the Universe is listening and it is already uploading your blueprints.

Peace, Dennis

12 Pieces Of Safety Pin Jewelry To Wear For A Beautiful Cause

The unsettling rhetoric from Donald Trump’s campaign, as well as the countless acts of hate that have been reported in the days since his election, have left many people wondering how they can be an ally to those targeted by hateful actions and words.

There’s one incredibly easy way to show your support ― wear a safety pin. Adapted from a movement that spread in the United Kingdom following the Brexit vote, Americans have been encouraged to wear safety pins on their clothing to signal solidarity. If you’re wearing a safety pin, it’s a sign that you’re a safe ally.

According to an Instagram posted by user b00kn00k, wearing the pin shows that “immigrants, refugees and anyone else threatened by the hate and fear mongering of Trump and his many supporters can know that I care and will do all I can to combat xenophobia, racism, sexism and ableism.”

As it happens, safety pins happen to be lovely in design on their own accord, and have been the inspiration for jewelry of all different types. If you are looking to show your solidarity and want something a bit more permanent than a safety pin, here are 12 lovely pieces of jewelry to consider.

Gifts that Give: How to Shop for a Cause This Holiday Season

2014-12-18-photo4.JPG

Americans spend over 250 billion dollars annually on fashion. Take a moment to let that sink in, and read that statistic again. Yup, I said 250 billion. As a philanthropist and a firm believer in conscious consumerism, I am always thinking about how to create “products with a purpose” that give twice.

It is my belief, that by empowering the consumer to give back by encouraging them to feel a constant and engaging connection to giving, that the birth of a new world, where our dollars can act as a catalyst to accomplish the change we want to see in the world will be possible. After all, by encouraging money over involvement, we are perpetuating the notion that the problem, be it poverty or child soldiers, is far away, and we can absolve ourselves of any responsibility by signing checks.

With that said, since supporting important causes can be easy to forget amid the hustle and bustle of shopping during the holiday season, I decided to talk all about “gifts that give” on my latest NBC style segment on the Kerri-lee Mayland show. After all, I’ve said it before and ill say it again: it’s better to give than to receive. And what better time to tap into your altruistic spirit than the holidays? Here are some suggestions of holiday gift ideas that give twice:

Adele Gives Rare Glimpse Into Her Private Life, For A Good Cause

Adele has achieved international superstar status at the tender age of 20 but she has managed to keep her personal life almost entirely private in the five years since. Until now, that is.

Promoting World Water Day on Saturday, March 22, Adele posted a four photo collage to her Twitter account. The clues we can glean are few but precious: Adele has a small fish tank, Adele looks positively stunning without makeup, and Adele’s 17-month-old baby boy Angelo is growing up so fast!

Gwyneth Paltrow, Britney Spears, Bar Refaeli and Katy Perry have also endorsed the important cause, aimed to provide clean water to the 800 million people who lack access to it, on social media this weekend.
