Unclaimed Baggage Center – America’s weirdest attraction

Have you ever been to the airport baggage claim and seen that solitary case or two going around and around the machine, with no obvious owner? Many people forget their luggage, and airports every year can end up with loads of cases and unclaimed baggage. You’ve probably heard urban legends about what happens to baggage that is left in the airport, but what actually happens?

Well, it might surprise you to know that there is actually an Unclaimed Baggage Center in the United States where a lot of this luggage gets sent. Of course, there are attempts to trace the owners first, but sometimes, as we know, this is not always possible. So, let’s find out more about this remarkable, and unlikely American attraction!

Unclaimed Baggage Center, Scottsboro, Alabama

Scottsboro, Alabama

It might seem unlikely, but Scottsboro, Alabama is actually the location for this peculiar Unclaimed Baggage Center. This is the place for unclaimed baggage that the airports have not been able to find a home for. It’s a big warehouse filled with all manner of luggage in every size, color, and shape. You can take a road trip here, and check out one of the most unusual attractions in the United States. Created by Doyle Owens in 1970, the place has become hugely popular with tourists visiting the lakes and foothills of northern Alabama.

A treasure trove

The center is a veritable treasure trove of untouched items just begging to be discovered. A secondhand store supplied by the biggest US airline companies, and the only store in the whole country to sell lost luggage. Every case and bag has a story to tell, and beneath the dust over leather or nylon, there are so many mysteries to be uncovered. The enterprise was moved to its current home in 1995 and boasts more than one million visitors per year. There is also a stunning museum of oddities here that you can pass the time taking a look at too.

Buying new attractions

With just about everything you could think of, there are so many new attractions to spend your money on here. 40,000 square feet of undiscovered junk that could well hold some treasures deep within. The great thing about this place is that it doubles as a thrift store, meaning you can buy all the stuff they have on display – it’s all been cleaned or washed beforehand of course. This often means you can get brand new stuff for prices much less than you would pay in a regular store. And, with 7,000 new items hitting the center every day, it’s not as though you need to worry about a limited range!

If you’ve been watching too many episodes of Storage Wars, and you’ve been bitten by the bidding bug, you should head to the Unclaimed Baggage Center and bid for some unclaimed luggage. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and one person’s abandoned luggage can hold so many undiscovered surprises. This is something you can really get to enjoy properly by making the most of this attraction.

Due to rapper Nipsey Hussle’s influence on hip-hop, it’s only right that his home going service be magnificent. It has been announced that the L.A rapper’s funeral will be held next week at the Staples Center, TMZ reports.

The venue, which holds 21,000 people, will host Hussle’s funeral on Thursday, April 11th, 2019. LAPD officers will be present to secure the event. In order to attend the funeral, you will have to purchase tickets. This isn’t the first time the Staples Center hosted a funeral for a major celebrity. Michael Jackson’s funeral was also held there back in 2009.

Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was shot and killed on March 31st in front of his Marathon Clothing store in his hometown. The alleged shooter is Eric Holder, who recently plead not guilty to murder charges. Hussle was only 33-years-old and left behind his two children, his son Kross and his daughter Emani.

His tragic killing sparked a gang truce that led to a peace march through the Crenshaw district in Los Angeles. Gang members from Watts, Compton and Inglewood all came together to discuss ceasing fire and creating more unity to prevent more killings in the South Central L.A community.

27-Year-Old Co-Founds Children’s Urgent Care Center in Birmingham

She may be the youngest healthcare administrator in the country. 27-year-old Tiffany Alexander is the co-founder of Pediatrics PM—a pediatric urgent care center in Birmingham, Alabama, reports The Birmingham Times. The facility had its grand opening on March 8, according to a Facebook post by Alexander.

Also listed as the facility’s administrator on the National Provider Identifier Database, Alexander co-founded the clinic which provides after-hours pediatric care.

“I knew I wanted to leave a legacy [after retirement],” Alexander told The Birmingham Times. “In my mind, it was something that could live on forever. It wasn’t conventional health care, it was something different, something out of the box, something we could one day franchise, that could have multiple locations, and reach the entire state.

Alexander also spent several years as an administrator at the University of Alabama. During that time, she managed day-to-day operations of the facility and its associated labs. She was also responsible for the budget and grant funding. She came up with the idea for the pediatric clinic while working at the University of Alabama.

According to the website, Pediatrics PM has a chief medical officer, a medical director, and four physicians. It offers services including urgent care, flu vaccines, and x-rays and lab testing.

Alabama has received national attention for some of the health challenges throughout the state. It consistently ranks as one of the most obese states; has the second highest percentage of people with hypertension; and the third highest rate of people with diabetes.

Recently, the state saw record numbers of children infected with the flu in emergency rooms.

With such alarming statistics, it would seem that Alexander is providing a very important service to her community.

I’ve been fortunate and very blessed, so I’ve always wanted to give back,” said Alexander to The Birmingham Times. “All the things I do go back into community engagement, … go back into giving people the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center Maintains “A” Grade for Patient Safety

HONOLULU — The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit advocate for health care transparency, has awarded Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center its seventh straight “A” grade in the Fall 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The Hospital Safety Grade, administered in the spring and fall every year, measures the overall performance of more than 2,500 hospitals nationwide in keeping patients safe from preventable medical errors. Moanalua Medical Center is 1 of 4 hospitals in Hawaii honored with the Straight A distinction of receiving five or more consecutive A grades.

The Hospital Safety Score uses hospital performance data collected by national health care organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Scores are calculated based on 27 types of publicly available hospital data related to patient care, medication errors and infection prevention. It’s published as a free resource to help patients and their families make informed health care decisions. Only 32 percent of hospitals in the U.S. have received an A grade in the Fall 2018 report.

“Patient safety is a top priority at Kaiser Permanente, and we’re proud of our doctors, providers and staff who work together to create a healthy healing environment for patients,” said Linda Puu, RN, vice president of quality, safety and care experience at Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii. “Our integrated electronic health record system and coordinated care approach helps reduce errors and safety risks, which improves patient outcomes and ensures a higher quality of care.”

Ad Check: What Happens If California Limits Dialysis Center Profits?

California voters are being bombarded with ads in what is the most expensive ballot measure campaign this year. They are being asked to decide Tuesday whether the state should limit the profit of kidney dialysis centers to 15 percent over the cost of patient care, with revenue above that rebated primarily to insurers.

What exactly would happen if voters approve Proposition 8 is still vague, and the $ 127 million raised to persuade voters hasn’t made it any clearer.

Both sides are making bold statements. But even the Legislative Analyst’s Office, nonpartisan officials who advise the state Legislature, said Prop 8 could result in a “net positive impact in the low tens of millions of dollars to net negative impact in the tens of millions of dollars.” In other words: No one knows.

Here’s what both sides had to say and what they base it on.

Against Proposition 8

The dialysis companies, mostly DaVita and Fresenius Medical Care, have contributed more than $ 110 million to fight Prop 8, more than six times what the “Yes on 8” campaign has raised. Their ads feature concerned health care professionals and dialysis patients warning voters of the terrible effects Prop 8 would have on dialysis patients and taxpayers in California.

This ad is just one in a series in heavy rotation on TV stations across the state. Like most of the “No on 8” advertisements, it prominently cites the Berkeley Research Group when claiming Prop 8 “would force many dialysis clinics to shut down, and threaten the care that patients need to survive.”

The narrator of the ad goes on to say “studies show Prop 8 will increase health care costs by hundreds of millions of dollars,” again citing the Berkeley Research Group.

The Berkeley Research Group is a large international consulting firm hired by the “No on 8” committee to analyze the proposition’s economic impact. It was paid more than $ 200,000 by the committee, according to campaign finance reports filed with the California secretary of state.

The consulting firm — which is not affiliated with the University of California — based its analysis on financial data from dialysis clinics around the state, including self-reported totals for direct patient care, quality improvements and “non-allowable” costs. Non-allowable costs, which might include some management staff positions and corporate overhead costs, will be ironed out through a public rule-making process if Prop 8 is passed.

The researchers used their own interpretation of non-allowable costs, took that to calculate how many clinics would surpass the 15 percent margin, and then applied the reimbursements that Prop 8 would require to conclude that “most clinics will migrate to having negative operating margins.” The analysis estimated that Prop 8 would increase health care costs for taxpayers by between $ 12 million and $ 2.6 billion annually.

Whether that happens depends on how clinics could adjust their operations to decrease their expenses that are not considered allowable patient care costs.

There is nothing unusual about relying on consultants to supply ammunition for a political campaign. “The effort to marshal research to support an advocacy campaign is not at all uncommon,” said Edward Walker, a sociology professor at UCLA specializing in political lobbying by businesses. He also pointed out that the advocacy campaigns often try to distance themselves from the research they pay for.

The Berkeley Research Group report leaves no room for uncertainty. “It is certain that Prop 8 will result in the closure of numerous clinics and the withdrawal of dialysis services from hundreds of thousands of patients,” the report said.

For Proposition 8

The Yes committee is funded almost exclusively by the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West. The union has long fought to organize workers at dialysis clinics. Rather than focus on Prop 8’s possible effects, the “Yes” ads criticize the dialysis industry in general. The labor union has contributed more than $ 17 million to the “Yes on 8” committee, the largest amount SEIU has ever shelled out.

This ad starts out dramatically: “$ 150,000 a year,” the narrator intones. “That’s how much big dialysis corporations charge some patients, a 350 percent markup over the cost of care.” The ad doesn’t cite a source, but the figure roughly matches what industry financial analysts say private health insurance pays for dialysis.

Dialysis companies argue that the low reimbursement rate from Medicare — which covers about 90 percent of patients — is the reason they are forced to charge more for the 10 percent who are covered by private insurance. Those private insurance payments allow them to remain profitable. SEIU argues that high rates for private insurance contributes to higher overall health care costs and points out that the dialysis companies have a higher profit margin than hospitals in the state.

DaVita, a for-profit company that runs half of all dialysis clinics in California and is the biggest contributor to the “No on 8” campaign, reported profits of $ 1.8 billion on revenue of $ 10.9 billion last year, almost all of which came from its dialysis business.

The “Yes on 8” ad also cites an investigation by ProPublica, a nonprofit news organization, which found that the U.S. has one of the highest fatality rates for dialysis in the industrialized world. The narrator says, “Dialysis corporations make a killing, driving up insurance rates while patients report blood stains and cockroaches in their clinics,” while a quote from the ProPublica article is flashed on the screen. It says: “dangerous conditions, inadequate care, higher-than-expected mortality rates.”

While the ProPublica report did find troubling conditions in dialysis clinics around the country, the allegation of cockroaches was from a different report. ProPublica’s investigation examined records from more than 1,500 clinics in a number of states, including California, and it noted filthy or unsafe conditions in almost half of the units. But it doesn’t say the problem is any better or worse in California.

The “Yes on 8” committee’s communications approach is part of an ongoing campaign to challenge the power and profits of large dialysis companies, and organize their workers.

“This is in part a proxy battle between the labor unions and the dialysis centers,” Walker said. “It’s a way to increase the pressure and the leverage.”
