Chicago Judge Allows Jussie Smollett To Travel To Meet With Attorneys

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago judge says “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett can travel out-of-state to meet his lawyers while he’s free on bond on charges he falsely reported being attacked by two masked men.

Anne Kavanagh is a spokeswoman for Smollett’s attorneys, who say he’s innocent.

Kavanagh says attorney Mark Geragos, who’s based in Los Angeles, is Smollett’s lead attorney. She says a defense lawyer asked Monday that Smollett be allowed to travel to California and New York for meetings with his legal team.

Chicago police charged Smollett with disorderly conduct. Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says Smollett, who is black and gay, staged a racist and homophobic attack , then told police his attackers yelled racial and anti-gay slurs and referenced President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan.

He was released last week after posting $ 10,000 cash. He was ordered to surrender his passport.

‘Chicago Med’ Sneak Peek: Robin Returns — What Does That Mean for Connor?

Remember when Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) and Dr. Rhodes (Colin Donnell) were in a super serious relationship and she just up and left town? She returns during the Wednesday, February 19, episode of Chicago Med — and it’s safe to assume it will shake things up inside the hospital.

“She comes back because Dr. Charles’ ex-wife is in need of some help at the hospital. One of the big things between Connor and Robin is that fact that she just sort of left, she disappeared,” Donnell, 36, told Us Weekly exclusively. “He had to figure out somewhat to be OK with that. I think there are a lot of feelings that are still unexplored there.”

Of course, it doesn’t help that Dr. Rhodes is currently single again following a falling out with Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) — did she sleep with his dad or what? Regardless, “it’s going to be complicated” with his ex back in town, the former Arrow star added.

He also noted that there may be some interactions between Ava and Robin: “It’s going to be super awkward.”

In Us Weekly’s exclusive sneak peek of her return, Robin sits down with her dad (Oliver Platt) and her mom, CeCe (Paula Newsome), who has never been introduced on the show.

“You did good there,” Dr. Charles says to his ex-wife when Robin gets up to take a call. She corrects him: “We did good.”

However, she then reveals some bad news – and why she’s back in Chicago. “My lymphoma is back and my old chemo regime isn’t working,” CeCe tells Dr. Charles. “I already got third and fourth opinions and the only thing left is clinical trials.”

Chicago Med airs on NBC Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.

[Updated] Chicago Police Say New Evidence Suggests Jussie Smollett Paid Two Men to Orchestrate His Assault + Jussie’s Attorneys Release a Statement

Chicago Police believe Jussie Smollett paid two men, brothers Abimbola “Abel” and Olabinjo “Ola” Osundair to orchestrate the assault he initially said was a racist, homophobic attack.

via CNN:

Two law enforcement sources with knowledge of the investigation told CNN that Chicago Police believe Jussie Smollett paid two men to orchestrate the assault.

The brothers, who were arrested Wednesday, were released without charges Friday after Chicago police cited the discovery of “new evidence.” The sources told CNN that the two men are now cooperating fully with law enforcement.

Smollett told authorities he was attacked early January 29 by two men who were “yelling out racial and homophobic slurs.” He said one attacker put a rope around his neck and poured an unknown chemical substance on him.

The sources told CNN that there are records that show the two brothers purchased the rope found around Smollett’s neck at an Ace Hardware store in Chicago.

Smollett gave his first detailed account of what he says was a hate crime against him, and the aftermath, in an interview with “Good Morning America” that aired Thursday. During the interview he expressed frustration at not being believed.

“It feels like if I had said it was a Muslim or a Mexican or someone black I feel like the doubters would have supported me a lot much more,” Smollett said. “And that says a lot about the place where we are as a country right now.”

CNN’s attempts to reach both Smollett’s representative and attorney Saturday were unsuccessful.

Wow. Story developing…

Update: TMZ spoke to law enforcement sources of their own. One law enforcement source tells TMZ at least one of the brothers turned over his phone and there is a call between him and Jussie in the vicinity of the “attack,” but before it happened.

Update #2: Jussie’s attorneys has released a statement denying all claims he orchestrated his own attack.

Jussie Smollett Cancels Meet And Greet After Chicago Attack

After suffering a brutal attack in Chicago, Jussie Smollett has canceled the meet and greet that was supposed to take place tonight before his performance at the Troubador in Los Angeles. The event was canceled due to safety reasons.

“For security reasons we cannot accommodate any meet & greets,” the email that was sent to fans said according to TMZ. The email was sent to all the fans who purchased meet and greet tickets letting them know that their money will be refunded.

The Empire star was assaulted by Trump supporters early Tuesday (Jan. 29) morning while on his way home after a flight from New York to Chicago. Two white men in ski masks reportedly brutally beat Smollett, leaving him with fractured ribs. They also poured bleach on him and put a noose around his neck and screamed  “This is MAGA Country.”

Almost two weeks before the attack, a note with cut out letters was reportedly sent to FOX Studios addressed to Smollett that read “You will die black f—-t.” In the top corner of the envelope, the senders wrote MAGA.

The incident is being investigated by Chicago Police.

Smollett released a statement after the attack thanking fans for their support.

“Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served. As my family stated, these types of cowardly attacks are happening to my sisters, brothers and non-gender confirming siblings daily. I am not and should not be looked upon as an isolated incident. We will talk soon and I will address all details of this horrific incident but I need a moment to process.”

Chicago Police Release Photo Of “Persons Of Interest” In Smollett Attack

CHICAGO (AP) — Detectives reviewed surveillance footage of “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett walking to his downtown Chicago apartment, but so far none of the video shows him being attacked by two masked men, although investigators have obtained images of people they would like to question, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted photos of the “persons of interest” Wednesday evening.

Investigators “for the most part” can confirm the route Smollett took early Tuesday when he says he was attacked along a street in the Streeterville neighborhood after visiting a sandwich shop, Guglielmi said. However, there are gaps, and none of the footage shows an attack, he said, although the review is ongoing.

Smollett, who is black and gay and plays the gay character Jamal Lyon on the hit Fox television show, said the men beat him, subjected him to racist and homophobic insults, threw an “unknown chemical substance” on him and put a thin rope around his neck before fleeing.

Guglielmi said detectives, who are investigating the allegations as a possible hate crime, have looked at hundreds of hours of surveillance video from businesses and hotels in the heavily monitored area. But he said they still need to collect and view more. He said they are expanding the search to include footage from public buses and buildings beyond the scene’s immediate vicinity in the hopes of spotting the men who match Smollett’s description of the suspects.

“We haven’t seen anybody, at this point, matching the description he gave. Nobody looks menacing, and we didn’t find a container anywhere,” Guglielmi said, referring to a container for the liquid that the actor said was thrown at him.

Smollett has not spoken publicly about the attack, but his representative told The Associated Press Wednesday night that the actor “is at home and recovering.”

Now in its fifth season, the hourlong drama follows an African-American family as they navigate the ups and downs of the record industry. Smollett’s character is the middle son of Empire Entertainment founder Lucious Lyon and Cookie Lyon, played by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, respectively.

After the attack, Smollett returned to his apartment, and his manager called police from there about 40 minutes later, Guglielmi said. When officers arrived, the actor had cuts and scrapes on his face and the rope around his neck that he said had been put there by his assailant. According to Guglielmi, the 36-year-old later went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after police advised him to do so.

The FBI is investigating a threatening letter targeting Smollett that was sent last week to the Fox studio in Chicago where “Empire” is filmed, Guglielmi said. The FBI did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

Bobby Rush, a Democratic congressman from Chicago, issued a statement calling on the agency to conduct “an immediate and sweeping civil rights investigation into the racist and homophobic attack.”

In addition to his acting career, Smollett has a music career and is a noted activist, particularly on LBGTQ issues. Smollett’s representative said his concert scheduled for Saturday in Los Angeles will go on as planned.

The report of the attack drew a flood of outrage and support for Smollett on social media. Among the many celebrities and politicians who weighed in was California Sen. Kamala Harris, a 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful who knows Smollett. She called the attack “outrageous” and “awful.”

Some of the outrage stems from Smollett’s account to detectives that his attackers yelled that he was in “MAGA country,” an apparent reference to the Trump campaign’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

Chicago has one of the nation’s most sophisticated and extensive video surveillance systems, including thousands of cameras on street poles, skyscrapers, buses and in train tunnels.

Police say the cameras have helped them make thousands of arrests. In one of the best-known examples of the department’s use of the cameras, investigators in 2009 were able to recreate a school board president’s 20-minute drive through the city, singling out his car on a succession of surveillance cameras to help them determine that he committed suicide and had not been followed and killed by someone else, as his friends speculated.

Jussie Smollett Hate Crime Investigation Update — Chicago Police Are Expanding Their Search, Unable to Find Video or Photos of Assailants

The Chicago Police Department has issued a statement with an update on their investigation into Jussie Smollett’s racist and homophobic attack.

The FBI has taken over the investigation related to the threatening letter Jussie received last week, but as far as the actual attack itself police have been canvassing the area looking for surveillance footage.

TMZ reports that police visited a Target store near where the incident happened and they were able to retrieve some footage. A source says the footage shows just one person — presumably Jussie — walking down the street.

Anthony Guglielmi, Chief Communications Officer, tweeted that the department is expanding its search radius after being unable to find video or photos of the alleged attackers or any vehicles.

We’ll keep you updated as the investigation unfolds.

Chicago Police Investigating Possible Hate Crime Attack Against Empire Actor

Chicago police say they are investigating a possible hate crime against Empire star Jussie Smollett early Tuesday.

Smollett reported that he was approached by two men as he was walking down a Chicago street. The men allegedly began yelling racial and homophobic slurs at him and beat Smollett’s face with their hands, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Police said Smollett told them that the attackers poured an “unknown chemical substance” on him and wrapped a rope around his neck.

The two attackers then fled the scene and Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital. He is in “good” condition,” police said.

Smollett, an openly gay actor, is best known for his starring role on the FOX hit Empire, where he plays the role of Jamal Lyon. His character on the show is also gay.

Police said they are taking the allegations very seriously as they continue their hate crime investigation.

20th Century Fox said the studio was “saddened and outraged” to learn of the alleged attack.

“We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our EMPIRE family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night,” the statement said. “We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate — and especially against one of our own.”

Celebrities are weighing in on the incident. Empire co-star Vivica A. Fox tweeted she is angry and hurt over the attack and said “THIS MUST STOP!! SPREAD LOVE NOT HATE!”

Actress Zendaya tweeted that the attack is “heartbreaking and terrifying.”

Television producer Shonda Rhimes asked if anyone knew who was responsible for the attack to report them to the police.

Polar Vortex Set to Drop Arctic-Cold Temperatures on Chicago, Minneapolis

The polar vortex that’s sending a blast of extreme arctic cold air down to the Midwest this week is likely to leave Chicago residents feeling like they living in some of the coldest places on Earth, including the South Pole and Mt. Everest.

According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in Chicago is forecast to fall to negative 24 degrees Tuesday night and 26 degrees below zero on Wednesday night. The wind chill could make the Windy City feel as cold as 51 degrees below zero.

The forecast low temperature will probably break the record for lowest temperature ever recorded in Chicago: minus 27 degrees reached on Jan. 20, 1985.

Other cities in the Midwest will be even colder. Weather.com says that Minneapolis, MN, will see a low of minus 31 Thursday morning, while International Falls, MN, will reach as low as minus 37.

The Midwest’s temperatures are forecast to be colder than the base camp of Mt. Everest, which according to CBS Chicago will be around 30 degrees (although temperatures at higher elevations could be much colder).

Chicago’s high will also be below that of points in the Arctic Circle. Utqiagvik, Alaska (formerly known as Barrow), the northernmost point in the U.S., will reach 7 below zero, according to CBS, while Zackenberg Station, Greenland, will be, compared to Chicago, a relatively balmy 11 below zero.

Ex-Wife Of Chicago Cubs Star Addison Russell Describes Years of Alleged Abuse

When Chicago Cubs star Addison Russell hit a home run in the 2016 World Series his wife Melisa Reidy-Russell said she cried – not out of happiness, but relief that he would be in a good mood later.

“I was bawling in the stands,” she said. “Like, ‘Oh my God, thank God, finally. I don’t have to expect him to be grumpy when we go back to the hotel.’”

Reidy-Russell detailed of years of alleged physical and emotional abuse in an interview this week on Chicago TV station WGN-TV.

Major League Baseball suspended Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell 40 games this week for violating the league’s domestic violence policy.

ESPN reports Russell, who denies the allegations, accepted the suspension from MLB.

Addison Russell and Melisa Reidy-Russell met when they were both 20 years old. Noticing some red flags soon into their relationship, Reidy-Russell said she tried to break it off with Russell multiple times. He would reassure her and convince her to stay each time, she said.

“The physical stuff wasn’t every day. Or every month,” she said. “It was just when sh-t hit the fan. Fights started getting worse. He started breaking things. He broke my phone in half with his hands one day over something.”

MLB began investigating Russell in 2017 after since-deleted Instagram posts from Reidy-Russell suggested the couple was breaking up; in a separate post, a commenter who was a close friend to Reidy-Russell accused Russell of abusing his wife. The league did not take disciplinary action against Russell at the time.

The investigation picked up again this year after Reidy-Russell wrote a blog post about two weeks ago describing the physical and emotional abuse she says she endured at the hands of Russell. MLB placed Russell on administrative leave on Sept. 21.

“After gaining a full understanding of the situation, I have concluded it’s in the best interest of my family to accept MLB’s proposed resolution of this matter,” he said in a statement. “I wish my ex-wife well and hope we can live in peace for the benefit of our child.”
