Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center Receives Women’s Choice Award for Excellence in Bariatric Surgery

HONOLULU — For the fourth straight year, Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center has been recognized as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery by the Women’s Choice Award®. Presented by WomenCertified Inc., this evidence-based designation scored Moanalua Medical Center in the top 8 percent of 4,797 U.S. hospitals reviewed.

The America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery award is given to hospitals recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. To be eligible for consideration, hospitals must be accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, which indicates the highest standards for patient safety and quality care in the treatment of severe obesity. The award also takes into account patient safety data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and patient recommendation ratings from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey.

“Nearly 24 percent of Hawaii’s adult population is obese, living with an increased risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, arthritis and obesity-related cancer,” said Peggy Latare, MD, co-chief of the bariatric surgery department at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “Our bariatric team focuses on offering high-quality, integrated care and support that includes surgery, medication and meal replacements to treat obesity and its many associated risks, as well as education and resources that help patients improve their overall health and quality of life.” Kaiser Permanente Hawaii members who are interested in these services can call 808-432-7830.

America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery combines national accreditations, HCAHPS survey results and hospital outcome scores with primary research about women’s health care preferences. It is the only award recognizing excellence in bariatric surgery based on robust criteria that consider female patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Meredith Finally Makes Her Choice on Valentine’s Day

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap
Giacomo Gianniotti, Ellen Pompeo and Chris Carmack on ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ ABC/Mitch Haaseth

Happy Valentine’s Day! Now that the most romantic holiday of the year has hit Seattle (a bit early), Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was once again faced with the choice between DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) and Link (Chris Carmack) on the Thursday, February 7, episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Did she make the right one?

Instead of going to the New Year’s Eve party hosted by Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex (Justin Chambers) — the one that was meant to be her first date with DeLuca — she ended up at the hospital with her patient, who finally came out of a long coma. But after he was stood up at the party, DeLuca was upset that Meredith didn’t even bother to call.

“I used to think you were so beyond me, but you’re not. You’re like a kid, playing hide and seek, hiding behind a million excuses,” DeLuca told her. And that pissed Meredith off so much that she turned around and asked Link out on a date for Valentine’s Day … right in front of DeLuca.

But after she watched her patient pass away minutes after marrying her husband in her hospital bed, DeLuca surprised her with champagne on the hospital roof, giving her the Valentine’s Day date she didn’t expect – while Link sat alone at the restaurant where she was supposed to meet him. Ouch.

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap

The Truth About Betty

Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) went to visit Betty (Peyton Kennedy) at rehab for the holidays, and she was really struggling being sober and not being able to get back to drugs, which she admitted made her feel better than being Leo’s mom. Later, when Amelia came back with Owen (Kevin McKidd), Betty had a lot to tell them: Now that she’s starting the 12-step program, she has to make amends and come clean about what she’s been lying about all this time.

Not only is her name actually Brittany, but her parents don’t know where she is — and they have no idea that she had a baby (or was even pregnant in the first place). She refused to share any other information, so it was almost impossible for Owen and Amelia to track down her real parents.

But the biggest question for Amelia and Owen: Once they find Betty’s real parents, will they get to keep Leo?

Ben and Bailey’s Relationship Is on the Line

Ben (Jason Winston George) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) have a major strain to work out in their marriage, and now that the holidays are here, the time has finally come for them to figure things out. Although they had been separated, Bailey finally asked Ben to come home, but Ben wasn’t having it — no matter how much she tried to convince him she had her anxiety under control.

“Miranda, I love you, but you broke my heart,” Ben told her. “I’m not coming home just because you’re lonely, and the fence needs patching.”

However, when Bailey came home, she found Ben at their house, building her a surprise treehouse. He promised he would be by her side, as long as she would do things together — including working through her own mental health issues. So true love does exist … at least, it does for these two.

Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.

Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center Receives Women’s Choice Award for Cancer Care

HONOLULU — For the second consecutive year, Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care by the Women’s Choice Award®. This evidence-based designation places Moanalua Medical Center in the top 9 percent of 4,797 U.S. hospitals offering cancer care services.

The America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care award is based on criteria such as the comprehensiveness of diagnostic and treatment services offered, low rates of infection compared to the national average, national accreditations, and female patient satisfaction and preference ratings on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey.

Kaiser Permanente’s multidisciplinary, team-based approach focuses on all stages of cancer care, from prevention through treatment. The organization holds an annual Cancer Screening and Prevention Fair where medical specialists and counselors provide screening and lifestyle education to hundreds of attendees. Kaiser Permanente also recognizes that women have specialized health care needs. Moanalua Medical Center’s cancer care services include a breast care clinic, which provides cancer patients with a coordinated team made up of oncologists, geneticists, radiologists, surgeons and support staff who provide comprehensive care under one roof.

“Every year, thousands of people in Hawaii receive a cancer diagnosis,” said Jennifer Carney, MD, chief of oncology and hematology at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “Getting that news is never easy. We strive to provide coordinated care that takes into account our patients’ total picture of health so we can deliver safer, more effective care that is also more convenient for our members. We’re grateful to be able to make a difference in the lives of our many members, who survive cancer every year.”

In 2016, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii was ranked first in the state on breast and colorectal cancer screenings by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a national quality assurance organization. In 2017, Moanalua Medical Center received a 3-year accreditation, the longest available, from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACS CoC) based on quality measures including early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation and end-of-life care.

Designer’s Choice: 2019 Trend Predictions from Canadian Designers

Warm colors like camel (Earthy Cane, Dulux) and green (Night Watch, Dulux 2019 Color of the Year) are coming on strong. A great way to use these colors is to mix them with other popular colors. For example, adding green to a navy scheme or camel to a neutral gray scheme will add depth and warmth to the room. I am also seeing a resurgence in faux finishes, graduated colors and ombre patterns. This is a fresh way to blend two colors and create drama. – Gabriele Pizzale, www.pizzaledesigninc.com

In an effort to bring authentic personality into a space, we are increasingly looking toward sculptural lighting, made by makers with interesting combinations of materials and unique finishes. Shades of black (Black Forest, Dulux) and white (Gypsum, Dulux) are always dramatic and appealing, especially together. – Lisa Stevens, www.lisastevensco.com

In 2019, I expect to see the trend move to deeper, more grounded hues like midnight blues (Mountain Lake, Dulux) and black. Different shades of dark blue can be seen in fabric, furniture, accessories, wallpaper, etc. Black will stay present in lighting, plumbing fixtures, millwork, fabrics and other interior elements with gold (Gold Ticket, Liquid Metal) adding sparkle and luxury to the more transitional application of the above colors. – Negar Reihani, www.spaceharmony.ca

Some of my favorite colors for 2019 are vibrant berry and current inspired tones (Chilled Wine, Dulux) that make a huge statement. I also expect to see greige (a warmer gray) and creams (Willow Springs, Dulux) making a huge comeback. For décor and accessories, rounded sofas, natural wood accents, light oak floors and non-traditional moldings will all play a big part in design for 2019! – Yvonne Whelan, www.yvonnewhelandesign.com

Beige is making a comeback but in a more buff hue (Pale Taupe, Dulux) in 2019. We’ll also see a more saturated, deep blue (Smoke Blue, Dulux) that is powerful yet calming with a slight black undertone. For furniture and accessories, we will see a lot of warm tones and shades of rust and amber along with geometric patterns and shapes. – Karla Dreyer Design, www.karladreyerdesign.com

In 2019, I expect to see a lot of pastels, dusty blues (Nautical Star, Dulux) and greens (Bahia Grass, Dulux). (Shown with Elusion, Dulux) A growing trend is color matching with walls and accents in the same color. I also think natural wood wallpaper and pretty accessories will be a popular choice. – Kendall Ansell, www.kendallansell.com

Blue is always a great go-to color, however in 2019, I see the color having a gray undertone and hint of green (Baritone or Chalky Blue, Dulux). Pink has been very popular and I expect to see pinks with a coral undertone in the coming year (Siesta Rose, Dulux). It’s a more elegant, classic and vibrant version of pink which is a very useable color with any décor. Another trend I see changing in 2019 is wallpaper; moving away from flowers and birds to more geometric patterns that work well with a wide variety of design styles and can be coordinated with other patterns in the room. – Jacklynn Little, www.jacklynnlittleinteriors.com

Matte black continues to be everywhere; in furniture, accessories, light fixtures, appliances and plumbing fixtures. I love to use hits of black in spaces, so I’m loving this trend! Graphic black (Onyx, Dulux) and white (Delicate White, Dulux) color palettes create a wonderful backdrop that pairs beautifully with another color trend we’re seeing now: warm hues like rust, clay, burnt orange, mustard yellow and dusty pinks. Indoor plants have been an important element of decorating for a few years and this trend will continue. Plants add a natural vibe, a great pop of green and life to a room. – Robbin Caskenette Interiors, www.robbincaskenetteinteriors.com

We’ll see warmer greige tones (Hourglass, Dulux) as neutrals in 2019, paired with cool charcoal grays, rich jewel tones, and deeper earth tones. I believe we’ll also see more color in painted cabinetry, both in dark tones and in pastels like the smoky blue green (Nautical Star, Dulux) in this laundry room. Elaborate tile patterns and shapes in backsplashes and flooring will continue for 2019 as well as more emphasis on ceilings with color, wallpaper, and architectural detail. – Jillian Straky, www.housewears.ca

We will see a lot more deep greens (Blarney Stone, Dulux) and sophisticated pinks (Magenta, Dulux) in 2019. These colors pair well with the grays and blues that have been popular for a while and their jewel tones work well with rich metal tones. We can expect to see plenty of curves, velvet textures and natural wood tones as well. – Glen Peloso, www.grafus.ca

While we will still be painting walls white, they will have a pastel undertone such as a pale grayed out lilac or apricot for 2019 (Guardian Angel, Dulux)! Colors will be warmer, earthy tones (Nutmeg, Dulux) which pair well with pastels, whites and warm grays. We are bringing the outdoors in with more natural finishes of wood and stone, linen bedding, undyed wool rugs, artisan made products, plants and plenty of natural light. Minimizing clutter and incorporating textures rather than patterns are key to making this trend work. – Trish Knight, www.trishknight.com

Rich gray is one of my favorite colors for 2019. I also see a big shift towards pastels that will continue in 2019, like this pastel pink (Apricot Cream, Dulux) that is perfect for this room. (Also Shown: Silent Night, Dulux) I am also expecting to see electric opening wine fridges as a popular choice for kitchens and in-home bars! I love the Liebherr Integrated Panel Refrigerator. It uses an electric driver with soft touch opening and closing. If left open, the fridge will suction itself closed and will open with the touch of a finger. – Jamie Banfield, www.jamiebanfield.ca
