Max Mara reissues Nancy Pelosi’s viral red coat

It was the little red coat that set the internet on fire last December when then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sported a sharp shade of scarlet pulled from Max Mara’s fall 2012 archives. However, this wasn’t the first time Pelosi was caught red-handed in the candy apple coating known as the “Fire Coat.” Pelosi first…

Outfit Formula: Pale Pink Coat

Pale pink clothing is an acquired taste. Personally, pale pink is one of favourite pastels, along with light blue. I find it very versatile, and quite “neutral”. It works with sour brights, earth tones, jewel tones, dark neutrals and light neutrals, so take your pick. Pale pink is soft, sensual and pretty visually, and can work beautifully in a hard edged look too. That’s why pale pink makes sense as a coat. Years ago, I had a classic pale pink wool coat that I wore into the ground. I’m on the look out for another because I’d wear it into the ground again.

There are countless ways to incorporate a pale pink coat into outfits, and you don’t need to wait till Spring to sport it. Wear a pale pink coat in Autumn and Winter because why the heck not! Here are four easy ways to wear a pale pink coat to get you started.

1. Casual and Comfy Grace

Combine a pair of blue jeans with a burgundy printed or solid blouse or sweater. Add white sneakers or another type of casual shoe, and top it off with a pale pink coat. Feel free to wear burgundy, tan or blush footwear instead of white.

2. Trendy Hard Edge

Combine cropped black pants or jeans with a top in a shade of white. Add trendy black boots or oxfords, and top things off with a pale pink coat. The black bag picks up the black in the rest of the outfit, and adds the hard edge. The white adds a crisp touch. Perhaps you’d like to wear a column of black under the pink coat, and add statement jewellery or belt hardware for textural interest. Personally, I’d throw in white boots and bag that match the white top.

3. Frocked and Sneaked

This is the easiest outfit formula of the four. Throw a pale pink coat over a dress and add sneakers or other footwear that works with the outfit. In this case, the dress is a burgundy floral, but you can wear any colour or pattern that you think works with pale pink. Add hosiery for warmth.

4. Business Casual

Combine a black skirt with a grey top. Finish off the look with black footwear, a pale pink coat, and a bag that works with the palette of the outfit. This is my favourite of the four combinations because it’s dressy, pretty, and exudes a retro, modern and relaxed elegance. The grey pullover is a comfy and casual pairing with the voluminous midi. The pale pink coat screams dressy glam. I love that the model was styled with dressy black flats instead of heels. Feel free to add sheer black or nude-for-you hose for warmth. Add jewellery, eyewear, head gear and watch as desired.

From Gucci’s Blackface Sweater to Beyoncé Sambo Coat: 5 More Times Fashion Met Racism

Fashion is art; and art, of course, can be controversial. But when does edgy fashion become overt racism? Fashion house Gucci ignited a firestorm recently by selling a black balaclava sweater that many say bears the racist emblem of the black Sambo caricature. And Prada recently faced backlash after selling monkey-faced keychains that many saw as a mocking blackface design.

Anger over blackface and racial mocking have become even more intense of late with revelations that several Virginia politicians have dressed in blackface in their pasts. Here are other missteps by brands or celebrities when a fashion statement went awry.

5 More Times When Fashion Met Racism

H&M’s “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” Ad

In Jan 2018, H&M releases an ad featuring a black child modeling a green hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with the phrase “coolest monkey in the jungle.” Social media users vowed to stop shopping at the retail giant while others blasted marketing executives for approving the image despite the ugly history of using “monkey” as an ethnic slur against black people. The retailer issued an apology and removed the ad from its website

Moschino Racially Profiles Black Customers

A former employee at a Moschino boutique in West Hollywood, California, filed a lawsuit against the Italian luxury clothing company for racial discrimination. According to the employee, a store supervisor would call black clientele “Serena” and ordered employees to follow and watch them closely if they weren’t wearing diamonds or name brand clothing.

Moncler Jacket’s Penguin Face – Racist?

Outerwear apparel-maker Moncler was scrutinized for a design on one of its coats that led many to liken it to a Sambo image. The company defended itself by saying the image was actually the face of its penguin character.

Port 1961, a high-fashion brand based in Canada, found itself in a public relations predicament when black models walking down the runway sporting sweaters that read, “Every Color Matters” and “Only Love Matters,” in one of the brand’s fashion shows.

Beyoncé Gets Side Eye for “Sambo Coat”

During All-Star Weekend in 2015, Beyoncé was spotted donning a Scooter LaForge trench coat, evoking some raised eyebrows. The coat, which retails for $ 320, features a custom-painted depiction of a smiling clown that some are describing as the often controversial, black-face character Sambo.

Max Mara is Reissuing ‘Nonna’ Nancy Pelosi’s Red Power Coat

Andrew Harnik/AP

ROME—When Nancy Pelosi strolled out of the White House in her red power coat after meeting President Donald Trump last Tuesday, no one was prouder than Max Mara, the coat designer. The last time the so-called Fire Coat was on the market was in 2013, but the Italian designer was so impressed by the way Pelosi wore it, they’ve decided to bring it back.

“Max Mara is honored that U.S. House Representative @nancypelosi wore the #MaxMaraFireCoat to her recent historic meeting at the White House,” the Italian company wrote in an Instagram post. “A #MaxMara coat is a year on year companion, designed to last a lifetime. This boule shaped, funnel collar coat represents lasting values and projects both personal strength and glamour.”

The winter coat, which sold under the name Glamis in Italy, will be reintroduced in 2019 in a variety of colors, including Pelosi’s favorite fire red. Pelosi also famously put on her Armani sunglasses when she left the oval office meeting.

We’ve found the perfect coat, and it’s from Primark

Yes, really

Don’t get me wrong, I love a gorgeous designer coat, and a Max Mara camel coat has been on my wish list for quite a while, but sometimes you just can’t beat a good bargain.

It might not be quite the same quality, but I’ve found a great coat at Primark, and it’s only £25. You can’t argue with that now can you?

The coat is quite classic in its shape, but with an on-trend pink check that will easily upgrade your look for autumn.

In fact, quite a few of us in the office have our eye on it, we just wish you could shop it online – however it’s worth the in-store visit in my opinion.

You can do the tonal thing and wear it with pink corduroy trousers and a matching oversized knit, and finish it off with a pair of tab faux snake print ankle boots.

Plus, you’ll still have money leftover for Christmas presents.

Ezra Miller’s Puffer Coat Dress Shows How Exciting Gender-Neutral Clothing Can Be

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

From the moment Ezra Miller stepped onto the red carpet for the premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald last week, the actor’s Moncler puffer jacket became a sartorial Rorschach test.

Some said Miller’s ribbed black cocoon turned him into a human sex toy. Dr. Who fans saw a dapper Dalek in Miller. A case could be made for Miller looking like robot actor at a fitting for a futuristic production of Henry VIII. Or even a slightly styled-up Handmaid.

One tweet perhaps summed it up best: “Ezra Miller dressed like a sassy sleeping bag last night & somehow managed to pull it off.”

Inside My Epic, Disappointment-Strewn Search for the Perfect Winter Coat

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

The most toxic relationship I’ve ever been in was with a quilted Ralph Lauren coat.

I’d hastily purchased the black, diamond-patterned number on sale at Macy’s after it became clear that layering sweaters underneath a leather jacket and hoping for the best just wasn’t going to cut it during a frigid New York City winter.

The sleek, waterproof coat seemed to project “I’m a dry, capable urbanite.” As soon as I purchased it, I ripped off the tag, excited to trot around town in my new coat.
