LVMH Is No. 1 on Deloitte’s Top 100 Luxury Companies List

Following behind stellar sales growth in the first-quarter of this year, LVMH has once again claimed the number one spot on Deloitte’s annual list of the world’s largest luxury companies, entitled “Global Powers of Luxury Goods 2019.” The report, which factors in data from the 2017 fiscal year, details that despite an overarching economic slowdown in key global regions — including China, the eurozone and the U.S. — the luxury sector has experienced growth as brands continue to “keep an eye on the new consumer classes of the future.”

According to the figures, the top 100 luxury goods companies accrued $ 247 billion USD in 2017, increasing $ 30 billion USD from the previous year’s $ 217 billion USD. The growth represents a hefty 10.8 percent lift, significantly outpacing the prior year’s gain of just one percent. Within the top ten alone, 48.2 percent of the total luxury sales were produced, marking a one percent increase over the previous year.

American cosmetics company Estée Lauder came in second, while Swiss jewelry label Richemont landed third. Gucci and Balenciaga parent Kering moved up one position to fourth place, knocking Italian eyewear brand Luxottica to fifth. The best life insurance companies in 2019

term life insurance policy

Looking for the best life insurance? Simple is better when it comes to life insurance, and buying level term insurance from a trustworthy company is just about as simple as you can get.

In this article, we’ll take a look at what term life insurance is and who needs it. We’ll also cover which companies money expert Clark Howard recommends you buy it from and how to research and identify the best term life insurance companies on your own.

A look at the best term life insurance companies

Do you have a family or someone else who depends on you financially? Life insurance is meant to replace your income when you’re gone.

Too often, people overlook this important financial safety net. Don’t be one of them. We know life insurance can seem dry and hard to understand, but we’ll do our best to explain it in simple, actionable terms.

Fortunately, the cost of term life insurance has been dropping for a while.

“Life insurance has gotten much cheaper over the years, in part because people are living longer,” Clark says. “Add into the mix the Internet, which has made it ultra-easy to compare prices when shopping for life insurance. The result is that term life insurance costs have dropped by two-thirds in the last 15 years. That’s a great deal!”

What is level term life insurance?

woman with question mark on head

Life insurance may seem complicated, but it doesn’t have to be!

Let’s break down some terms in the phrase “level term life insurance,” which is the kind of life insurance Clark recommends.

The “term” part here means you buy insurance for a set number of years depending on your age and your family’s needs. Typically, that means for periods of 20 or 30 years to protect your young children as you raise them into adulthood.

The “level” part means the premium remains the same for that number of years.

Remember the only purpose for life insurance is to replace your income (or your spouse’s) for your family if you die.

Pretty simple, right?

Who needs life insurance?

Two hidden home costs every prospective buyer should know about

Let’s answer this question with a couple of illustrations.

Say, for example, you have young kids and you want to provide financial security for them until they are adults. In this case, you might want to buy a 20-year term policy.

Or, let’s say you’re 35 and it’s just you and your spouse. You may want to provide for the remainder of your spouse’s life in the event of your death. In that case, you’d probably want a 30-year term policy.

You may not need a life insurance policy at all if there aren’t children in the picture.

“If you have no dependents at all, you don’t need to buy any life insurance,” Clark says. “And don’t ever buy insurance on children. A three-year-old doesn’t earn a salary, so there’s no need to replace his or her income.”

Clark Howard’s picks for term life insurance

Now that you know how Clark feels about life insurance, you might wonder who he’d buy it from.

Clark has long sung the praises of two insurers in particular — USAA and Amica Mutual — when it comes to term life insurance.

1. USAA

USAA logo

USAA is a diversified financial services company with offerings that include banking, investing and insurance.

Here’s the key thing to know about USAA: The services it offers are only available to those in the military or who are affiliated with the military through direct family ties.

2. Amica Mutual

amica mutual logo

What can you do if you or anyone in your family never served in the military but you still want a great company for term life insurance? Clark recommends checking out Amica Mutual, which is open to anyone. Amica is often acknowledged in the industry as an equal to USAA.

In fact, Clark believes so strongly in USAA and Amica that he listed them both as top picks on his lists of the best auto insurance companies and best home insurance companies.

3. Haven Life

Haven Life logo

Haven Life is one of a handful of insurers that issues term life insurance policies with no medical exam.

When you go through Haven, select qualified applicants (up to age 45) can finalize coverage online without the need to have a physical exam or a blood test like you would with other insurers.

Certain candidates, however, may still need to pass medical underwriting, depending on a variety of factors.

Term life insurance companies ranked by stability

It goes without saying that you need to make smart choices when you’re buying insurance.

Clark recommends buying only from companies that are rated A++ or A+ by A.M. Best — the highest possible ratings from one of the top companies when it comes to measuring the long-term financial strength of different insurers.

“Anything less than an A+ — even an A — is unacceptable. Don’t be tempted by low premiums when you’re shopping around,” Clark says. “Stick with insurers of top strength, even if you have to pay more for it.”

You can visit AMBest.com to get started researching your insurance company of choice. Free registration is required to use the site.

We’ve pulled up some ratings of popular life insurers below:

Insurance company Coverage underwritten by A.M. Best rating
Amica Mutual (self) A+
USAA (self) A++
Haven Life Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company A++
State Farm (self) A++
Prudential (self) A+
Mutual of Omaha Group (self) A+
Globe Life (self) A+
John Hancock (self) A+

Understanding an insurance company’s financial strength is of the utmost importance. You want to make sure a company you’re buying a policy from today will be around for the long haul when your family needs them.

Once you’ve got the financial stability piece of the puzzle figured out, then you’re really just shopping for coverage based on cost. Clark says that you should aim to buy 6 to 10 times your annual income in coverage.

“All else being equal, buy life insurance by cost,” Consumer Reports notes. “Shop for the lowest rates using an online broker with ties to many insurers, not just a few.”

Fortunately, shopping for term life insurance is easy on the Internet. You can comparison shop for quotes at any of a number of sites like:

Final thought

A lot of people shy away from buying life insurance simply because they don’t understand it. But buying term life insurance can be simple and affordable.

Remember, if you’ve got children or other financial dependents, you need life insurance!

12 Companies That Are Making It Easier to Produce Less Trash

It’s official: The world has a trash problem. Landfills are filling up, recycling is becoming more expensive and less attractive to municipalities, and a lot of trash is finding its way into our parks, rivers, oceans—even our drinking water. When trash is dumped in the landfill, it emits methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, and when trash is incinerated it emits carbon and toxins that cause health problems. Many regions are running out of space to store all their trash, so they’re shipping it to far-off locations around the country and around the world. That method of trash disposal has worked relatively well for the regions dumping their trash, but it’s caused problems for the people who live where the trash ends up. Yes, whichever way you slice it, that ever mounting pile of trash will keep causing problems if we don’t take charge of the situation. For decades, municipal ordinances and business practices have made it difficult for ordinary consumers to effectively and easily reduce the amount of waste they generate. Convenience products and tempting time-savers have flooded the market and it’s understandable why they’ve become popular fixtures in the average American home. Unfortunately for the health of humans, animals, and plants, those convenience items come at an environmental cost. But the tides are turning: More than ever, consumers are eager to simplify their lives and explore sustainable living that brings health, balance, and cost-savings to their lives, while at the same time minimizing waste. And there are a number of companies making it easier than ever to live a sustainable life. Scroll through to learn how several companies are helping ordinary people make healthy choices for their home, their family, and their planet.

Set Your Own Schedule as an Online English Teacher With These 7 Companies

When Micaela Hegarty lived in Sumter, South Carolina, she needed a way to pay the rent while she attended college online, but the local economy couldn’t provide.

Hegarty, 25, needed a flexible schedule to work around her classes, and the ability to take her work on the road. When she searched Indeed for jobs in her area, there weren’t many results. One listing did catch her eye, though: online English as a Second Language teacher. That gig would allow her to work from anywhere.

Hegarty doesn’t have a bachelor’s degree or any previous teaching experience. But she found a job anyway — and it paid more than $ 20 an hour.

“It was the highest-paid part-time job I’ve ever come across,” Hegarty said, “especially as a college student.”

ESL teachers are in high demand. To keep up, many online English education companies offer their teachers bonuses if they refer other teachers to their platform. And, overall, requirements to become an ESL teacher are low, especially if you want to teach English abroad.

Hegarty made the switch to in-person teaching in August 2018. She said her online experience helped her land a teaching job in South Korea through its government-run Teach and Learn in Korea program.

If you’re not feeling quite that adventurous yet, you can start to teach English online from the comfort of your home, just like Hegarty did.

Want to Teach English Online? Try These 7 Companies

A student looks at an online teacher on a laptop.

Most of the companies below focus on primarily Chinese grade schoolers, meaning teaching hours tend to be in the early mornings or late evenings for U.S. time zones. That’s perfect to supplement a 9-to-5 job.

Some companies prepare lessons and schedule the classes for you. Others use less structured methods — log on whenever you have the free time and get matched with a student on a chat-pairing system.

All of the companies below are listed with their Glassdoor ratings easily accessible. Because demand for English teachers is so high, there are a lot of less-than-reputable companies out there. As with any new gig, it’s important to vet each company to see which one will fit your schedule and income needs.

While required education and experience may vary by company, here are some things you will need for all online classes:

  • Erasable whiteboard and markers.
  • Props like charts, pictures, posters or stuffed animals.
  • A web camera.
  • A high-speed internet connection.
  • A computer, tablet or smartphone.

Once you’ve get those materials, you’re ready to start signing up and taking students.

(Note: Companies are listed in alphabetical order.)

Boxfish

Turn your spare time into a nice, crisp Andrew Jackson.

Since 2012, Boxfish has incorporated its English-language curriculum into middle and high schools across Beijing and now offers online English classes that are available all across China. According to its website, more than 5 million Chinese students use the online platform to learn English.

Boxfish provides all the course materials that teachers need to get started, so there’s minimal lesson prep.

There are three ways to rack up teaching time:

  • A prescheduled 25-minute class, ranging from one to four students.
  • An on-demand 25-minute class, where the teacher and student are automatically paired at random.
  • A one-minute feedback video response to a prerecorded student oral dictation.

Boxfish pays teachers $ 10 per 25 minutes. If your student is a no-show, you’ll still get $ 6 per class. (But if you fail to show up to a scheduled class twice, you’ll get the ax.)

All lessons can be conducted on a tablet or smartphone. So no computer is required, but a high-speed, stable internet connection is.

To qualify, you must have grown up in an English-speaking country and have a bachelor’s degree. Current accents that are in-demand are American, Australian, British and Canadian. An English teaching certification (aka TEFL or TESOL) is preferred, but not required.

Hourly Pay: $ 20.

Glassdoor Rating: 3.5 (out of five) stars.

Requirements: Native English fluency; a tablet, smartphone or computer with a web camera; high-speed internet and a bachelor’s degree.

Cambly

Don’t sweat it if you didn’t go to college. You can still teach English online without a degree (and in several countries, if you’re interested).

Cambly is unique in that it offers English tutoring sessions to students around the world, children and adults alike. For teachers, there’s no minimum amount of teaching time because the payment system works by the minute at a rate of 17 cents. In theory, it’s possible to earn up to $ 10.20 an hour.

While pay is notably less than other companies, Cambly is welcoming to new teachers of English as a Second Language without industry experience or a college education. Plus, the paychecks come weekly.

Creating a tutor profile is straightforward. To qualify, you’ll simply need a native level of English fluency, a computer with a webcam and a high-speed internet connection.

Once your profile is complete, students will be able to search you in an index of tutors.  The competition may make it hard to land lessons at first, but tutors can make themselves stand out by scheduling priority hours, which let students know who’s online and available to chat.

Hourly Pay: up to $ 10.20.

Glassdoor Rating: 4.2 (out of five) stars.

Requirements: Native English fluency, a computer with a web camera and a high-speed internet connection.

Gogokid

A young woman wearing headphones smiles as she looks at a laptop.

Depending on your qualifications, Gogokid is among the top-paying English teaching platforms on the web. While the job can be performed from anywhere, the positions are open only to Canadian and American citizens.

Teachers are given a base pay between $ 7 and $ 10 a class, depending on experience and their performance during mock lessons that are part of the prehiring interview process.

Classes are 25 minutes long, so it’s possible to knock out two within an hour. Teachers accrue ratings based on class quality and attendance that can bump their base pay 25% higher; pay can range from $ 14 to $ 25 an hour for teaching two classes.

Gogokid lays out the teacher-rating criteria, so there’s no guesswork involved. It also supplies the lessons and curriculum to cut down on prep time. But, as always, props are appreciated.

As with many teaching platforms, hours are based on China Standard Time. Students typically study English after their school day, so peak hours are on weekdays between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. China Standard Time and between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekends, according to the Gogokid website.

Teaching with Gogokid requires a bachelor’s degree in any field. A certificate to teach English as a foreign language isn’t required, but it wouldn’t hurt (especially if you’re hoping for the maximum hourly rate of $ 25).

Hourly Pay: $ 14 to $ 25.

Glassdoor Rating: 3.9 (out of five) stars.

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree, a computer with a web camera, a headset and a 20 MBps high-speed internet connection.

Italki

Are you as interested in learning a new language as you are in teaching one?

Italki has more than 5,000 teachers who specialize in almost any language, the most popular being English.

Using an on-site search function, students can sift through an array of teachers, sorting by hourly rates, credentials and several other criteria.

Language teachers can create one of two profiles: professional teacher or community tutor. As the name implies, the professional teachers have a more formal background in language teaching, but native speakers who want to earn extra cash are welcome to host lessons as community tutors.

What distinguishes Italki from numerous other language-learning websites is that teachers can set their own hourly rates (between $ 4 and $ 80 an hour). There are no minimum or maximum hour limits, either.

Another unique feature to Italki is the ability for users to have language exchanges for free. (So if you want to practice your Korean, you can search for a Korean-language speaker who wants to learn English, and start talking.)

Similar to most freelance websites, Italki makes its money through service fees, which are currently 15% of the lesson cost, according to Italki’s terms of service. After each lesson, your pay accumulates on your profile until you request a withdrawal, which takes up to 10 days.

Since more than 5 million international students use Italki, schedules are a little more flexible because they aren’t based on one particular time zone.

Hourly Pay: $ 4 to $ 80.

Glassdoor Rating: 4.1 (out of five) stars.

Requirements: Native fluency in any language, a computer with a web camera and high-speed internet.

Qkids

A woman teaches children remotely using her laptop.

A big perk for most online English as a Second Language teachers is the ability to work from just about anyplace with a high-speed internet connection. However, with Qkids, ESL teachers are required to reside in the U.S. or Canada.

Regardless, there are several other unique aspects that make teaching English with Qkids worth your time if you plan on staying put in North America.

For example, Qkids does a lot of the scheduling work for you, and there’s no need to market yourself on the site like some other platforms require.

Teacher requirements are pretty flexible, too.

While the company prefers that teachers have previous teaching experience and certification, Hegarty didn’t have her bachelor’s degree (but was enrolled in college) when she taught with Qkids. She had no previous experience, nor a certification, and still earned $ 20 an hour. That’s because she received bonuses for performance and attendance on top of her base pay of $ 8 per lesson.

Like most similar sites, it’s possible to teach two lessons per hour, and those hours are likely to be in the early morning or late evenings, as the students — ages 4 to 12 — are based in China.

A minimum commitment to six hours (12 lessons) a week for six months is required to start teaching.

Hourly Pay: $ 16 to $ 22.

Glassdoor Rating: 4.3 (out of five) stars.

Requirements: Native English fluency, a residence in the U.S. or Canada, high-speed internet connection, a computer with a web camera and a minimum of six dedicated teaching hours per week.

Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone has been a mainstay in the language-learning world since 1992. While it’s best known for its educational software, it also dabbles in online tutoring.

At Rosetta Stone, the online English tutoring positions are considered part-time jobs. They provide more stability in terms of income because you’re guaranteed a certain amount of hours per week — usually between eight and 15, depending on the position. The company also offers its tutors bonus holiday pay and access to its 401(k) plan.

Regardless of location, all tutoring appointments are based on Eastern Standard Time (to avoid confusion, a spokeswoman said).

The trade-off, in comparison with some other platforms, is that you can’t teach on-demand hours at Rosetta Stone.

Another caveat is that the online tutoring positions are available only to U.S. residents with a bachelor’s degree or higher, but they are open to applicants nationwide. American and U.K. accents are welcome.

Hourly Pay: $ 15 to $ 22, according to Glassdoor.

Glassdoor Rating: 3.3 (out of five) stars.

Requirements: A U.S. residence, a bachelor’s degree, high-speed internet connection, a computer with a web camera and teaching availability on Eastern Standard Time.

VIPKid

A woman with a headset teaches remotely using her laptop.

In terms of Glassdoor rating, VIPKid is tied with other sites to make the list. But none comes close to the sheer number of reviews.

Since its founding in 2013, VIPKid has already amassed more than 1,200 anonymous Glassdoor reviews; most are overwhelmingly positive. Glassdoor recently rated it one of the “coolest companies for freelancers,” too.

The way VIPKid works is similar to all the other sites on the list: base pay for each lesson, two lessons per hour. The hours are also based on China Standard Time, as the students are Chinese grade schoolers. Minimal lesson prep is required. Its platform isn’t novel, but according to user reviews, it’s efficient and effective.

“I began working for VIPKid over a year ago because of its reputation of being one of the largest ESL companies in the market,” said Tim Gascoigne, a Canadian teacher who currently lives in Malaysia. “I found them to be the most reliable and consistent and knew people who worked for them already.”

To qualify, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in hand (sorry, college students), one or more years of relevant experience and must be able to commit to a six-month contract.

No TEFL certification is required, and teachers can reside anywhere in the world as long as there’s a stable internet connection.

Hourly Pay: $ 14 to $ 22.

Glassdoor Rating: 4.3 (out of five) stars.

Requirements: English fluency (non-native speakers allowed), a bachelor’s degree, a high-speed internet connection, a computer with a web camera and eligibility to work in the U.S. or Canada.

Gap To Split Into Two Companies

NEW YORK (AP) — Gap Inc. is splitting into two.

The retailer said Thursday that it’s creating two independent publicly traded companies — low-priced Old Navy and a yet-to-be named company, which will consist of the iconic Gap brand, Athleta, Banana Republic, Intermix and Hill City.

The San Francisco-based company said the spin-off will enable each company to focus on flexibility and pare down costs.

The company also said that it will be shuttering 230 Gap brand stores over the next two years.

Gap’s stock surged 24 percent in after-market trading.

The split up, which followed a comprehensive board review, come as Old Navy has been thriving, while Gap and Banana Republic have struggled.

“It’s clear that Old Navy’s business model and customers have increasingly diverged from our specialty brands over time, and each company now requires a different strategy to thrive moving forward,” said Robert Fisher, Gap Inc.’s chairman.

Gap’s current CEO, Art Peck, will hold the same position at the new company after the separation. Sonia Syngal, current CEO of Old Navy, will continue to lead the brand as a stand-alone company, which has about $ 8 billion in annual revenue. The new company that Peck will run has about $ 9 billion in annual revenue.

Upon separation, Gap Inc. shareholders are expected to receive a pro-rata stock distribution and as a result own shares in both the new company and Old Navy in equal proportion. The deal is expected to close in 2020.

The new company will be based in Gap Inc.’s current headquarters and Old Navy will remain at its current headquarters, both located in San Francisco.

Gap’s shares rose $ 6.21 to $ 31.61 in extended trading after the split-up was announced.

Kaiser Permanente Among World’s Most Ethical Companies for 2019

In a testament to its demonstrable commitment to integrity, Kaiser Permanente has been named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for 2019 by the Ethisphere Institute, an independent group that monitors business ethics.

Kaiser Permanente was one of 128 honorees worldwide, and one of only 2 organizations recognized in the Integrated Healthcare System category.

The award honors organizations whose practices improve communities, build capable and empowered workforces, and foster corporate cultures focused on ethics and a strong sense of purpose.

“More than ever, consumers care about not only what organizations do, but how they do it,” said Vanessa Benavides, Kaiser Permanente senior vice president and chief compliance and privacy officer. “Trust is scarce, and thus, more valuable. The organizations that think, speak, and act in a way that creates and promotes a more trusting environment will thrive. The World’s Most Ethical Companies honor is recognition for the work our organization is doing to ensure a culture of trust and ethics.”

This was Kaiser Permanente’s first year participating in the selection process. Honorees are scored based on 5 key competencies: the strength of their ethics and compliance program, corporate citizenship and responsibility, culture of ethics, governance, and leadership and reputation.

Kim Kardashian Slams Theory She’s Selling Her Looks to Fashion Nova Ahead of Time: ‘I Don’t Support What These Companies Are Doing’ [Video]

Kim Kardashian has been accused of selling her high-end designer looks to fast-fashion brands like Fashion Nova to make a profit — but the reality star says that’s not the case.

Earlier this week, Kim wore a vintage one-of-a-king Mugler dress. The following day, a knock-off version appeared on Fashion Nova’s website with a waitlist ready for purchase.

According to Kim, Fashion Nova (and other fast-fashion retailers) simply work fast in effort to capitalize on what she wore.

There’s a twist though — days before Kim wore the dress, a Fashion Nova model posted pictures of herself at a photo shoot for the knock-off version. The photos on the screen appear to be labeled labeled ‘Kim Dress.’

The file names were even labeled “Kim dress” while it’s now being called “Winning Beauty Cut Out Gown” lol. This begs the question: Did Fashion Nova whip up the dress overnight in their Los Angeles atelier after seeing Kim in it or is she peddling her vintage finds to mass retailers ahead of debuting them for a calculated, timely release? ????????? • ? : Getty • #kimkardashian #mugler #thierrymugler #manfredthierrymugler #bodycon #cutout #barelythere #strappy #straps #black #vintage #dress #velvet #fashionnova #wiwt #ootd #kuwtk #hollywood #beauty #kkwbeauty #kardashian #ecommerce #shady #smh #photoshoot #model #fashionmodel #dietprada

Do These 7 Companies Owe You Money? Check These Class Action Settlements

The holidays may have made everything merry and bright, but some businesses will be fighting to keep the office lights on after they pay these class-action lawsuit settlements. Our New Year’s countdown includes three tiers of claimants, two small-appliance companies and one payment processor accused of charging unauthorized fees.

Intuit TurboTax Fraudulent Tax Return

If you had a fraudulent tax return filed in your name, you could be eligible for two years of free credit monitoring by TransUnion as a result of an Intuit TurboTax class-action settlement.

Intuit TurboTax faced allegations the company failed to adequately protect consumers’ information, which allowed fraudulent tax returns to be filed for several years.

Class members are those who had a fraudulent tax return filed in their name through Intuit TurboTax for tax years 2014, 2015 or 2016.

Intuit admits no wrongdoing by agreeing to the settlement. No money is offered in the settlement, which could affect more than 915,000 consumers who will not be compensated for expenses related to fraudulent tax return filings. Consumers may wish to pursue such compensation separately.

To receive two years of free TransUnion credit monitoring services, click here to file a claim by Jan. 22, 2019.

Black & Decker, Farberware Small Appliances

Consumers who bought Black & Decker or Farberware small appliances may qualify for a portion of a class-action settlement.

Plaintiffs alleged that both companies failed to represent that certain covered products are manufactured and warranted by them.

Some plaintiffs also accused the brands of selling coffee makers that make much less coffee than they were marketed as producing.

The coffee makers were advertised as making a predetermined number of “cups,” which the plaintiffs allege are not the standard 8 fluid ounces that most consumers purportedly assume is meant by a “cup.”

The defendants included Spectrum Brands Holdings Inc. and Applica Consumer Products Inc. Neither admitted to wrongdoing in the settlement.

Consumers who purchased certain appliances between Feb. 5, 2014, and Oct. 19, 2018, may be eligible to receive compensation. Eligible items include:

  • Black & Decker: air fryers, blenders, can openers, coffee grinders, coffee makers, electric knives, food processors, grills, irons, juicers, kettles, mixers, quesadilla makers, rice cookers, skillets and other surface cookers, slow cookers, toasters, toaster ovens and waffles.
  • Farberware: coffee urns and percolators, food processors and toaster ovens.

Class members are eligible to receive up to $ 4.

Van Heusen Fake Sale (California Only)

Customers who shopped at a Van Heusen store in California could receive up to $ 150 in merchandise certificates due to a recent class-action settlement.

The retailer admits no wrongdoing in the settlement but faced allegations that it engaged in deceptive advertising practices by placing false reference prices on merchandise.

The fake prices were allegedly designed to convince customers that the products were of high quality and that the current prices were a bargain.

Class members are those who shopped at a Van Heusen store in California between June 1, 2018, and Oct. 3, 2018, where such fake reference prices were displayed upon products.

Compensation will be distributed by means of single-use merchandise certificates in the amount of $ 6.50.

There are three levels of class members, which include:

  • First tier of claimants: Class members who are a member of the Van Heusen loyalty program and made one or more qualifying purchases. These claimants are not required to submit proof and are eligible for one merchandise certificate.
  • Second tier of claimants: Class members who made one or more qualifying purchases and submit a valid claim form with proof of purchase. These claimants are eligible for one merchandise certificate.
  • Third tier of claimants: Class members who are a tier one or tier two claimant, made a qualifying purchase of $ 150 or more and submit a valid claim with proof of purchase. These claimants are eligible for additional merchandising certificates.

The potential award is $ 150 in merchandise certificates with proof of purchase or just one merchandise certificate of $ 6.50 without proof.

Subway Credit Card Receipt

Customers who used a debit or credit card to purchase items at a Subway fast-food restaurant may be eligible for part of a $ 30.9 million class-action settlement.

Subway faced allegations that the company violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) by allowing the expiration date of credit and debit cards to appear on receipts handed to customers.

FACTA prohibits anything other than the last five digits of the card number to appear on a receipt. The expiration dates allegedly appeared on receipts given at specific restaurant locations that used a Subway payment management system that had been programmed to print the dates.

Class members include customers who purchased food or other merchandise from those Subway restaurants between Jan. 1, 2016, and March 23, 2017.

Each class member is eligible for a potential award up to $ 75.

Fiat Chrysler Automatic Transmission

If you owned or leased a 2014 or 2015 Jeep Cherokee, 2015 Jeep Renegade, 2015 Chrysler 200 or 2015 Ram ProMaster City vehicle, you could be eligible for a portion of a class-action settlement regarding allegations that Fiat Chrysler installed defective automatic transmissions.

Vehicles equipped with a ZF 9HP transmission allegedly included a defect that causes loud noises and makes it difficult to shift into gear. The vehicles were marketed as having the benefits of both manual and automatic transmissions.

Under the terms of the class-action settlement, class members who made at least three transmission-related complaints to an FCA US-authorized dealer could receive up to $ 2,000 cash or a trade-in value of up to $ 4,000.

Fiat Chrysler has also agreed to extend warranties on vehicles containing the ZF 9HP transmission of the class vehicles to six years or 100,000 miles.

Class members with one of the qualifying vehicles must complete a claim form and include documentation that they made at least three transmission-related complaints prior to Nov. 16, 2018.

Conde Nast, Vogue, Golf Digest Magazines (Michigan Only)

Magazine subscribers in Michigan may be eligible for a portion of a $ 13.75 million class-action settlement.

Plaintiffs in the Condé Nast class-action lawsuit alleged Advance Magazine Publishers Inc. violated Michigan’s Preservation of Personal Privacy Act by allegedly sharing subscriber information with third parties.

No wrongdoing has been determined in the settlement, but Michigan subscribers of Allure, Architectural Digest, Bon Appétit, Brides, Condé Nast Traveler, Footwear News, Glamour, Golf Digest, Golf World, GQ, Lucky, Self, Teen Vogue, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue, W, Wired, and Women’s Wear Daily may qualify to receive up to $ 75 each in the settlement.

The actual award will depend upon the number of qualifying claims received by the estimated deadline of April 14, 2019.

Class members include Michigan residents who subscribed to a Condé Nast publication between July 20, 2009, and July 30, 2016.

Merchants’ Choice Payment Solutions Fees

A $ 15 million class-action settlement has been reached between businesses and Merchants’ Choice Payment Solutions, a payment card processing service accused of adding unauthorized charges to the merchants’ invoices.

Class members are those who contracted with or through Merchants’ Choice for payment processing services between Dec. 22, 2013, and Sept. 18, 2018, and were charged one of the following fees:

  • Annual fees.
  • Batch header fees.
  • PCI program/compliance fees.
  • PCI noncompliance/non-validation fees.
  • Gateway access fees.
  • Foundry/e-merchant fees.
  • Monthly minimum discount fees.
  • Nonqualified fees.
  • Discount rates.
  • Other discount fees (including signature debit rates).
  • Paper statement fees.

Potential awards are estimated to be $ 65 to $ 70.

50 Best Companies For Diversity

If you want to find companies that back up their diversity talk, look no further than the 2018 Black Enterprise 50 Best Companies for Diversity list—filled with corporations that have created measurable pathways to ensure African American representation among their workforce, senior management team, board of directors, and pool of suppliers.

Black Enterprise and the Executive Leadership Council have created this roster at a time when a number of corporate chiefs have focused on initiatives to boost the competitive metabolism of their organizations. In fact, more than 400 such leaders have signed the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion pledge. CEOs of 37 companies on our roster—JPMorgan Chase & Co., ADP, Bank of America, PepsiCo, General Motors, Macy’s, and Xerox Corp. among them—are signatories.

Although a number of D&I proponents applaud efforts to bring women, LGBT communities, and other underrepresented groups under the corporate tent, others like ELC’s CEO Otha “Skip” Spriggs III maintain that African Americans are actually losing ground—especially in the C-suite.

The most noticeable indicator has been the absence of black CEOs operating the nation’s largest publicly traded corporations. Today, there are only three black Fortune 500 CEOs versus seven in 2012. Actually, the trio—Marvin R. Ellison, chairman & CEO of Lowe’s Cos. Inc.; Roger W. Ferguson Jr., president & CEO of TIAA; and Kenneth C. Frazier, chairman & CEO of Merck & Co. Inc.—all manage companies on our Best Companies for Diversity list.

Here’s just one example of why that matters: Lowe’s, a list newcomer, tapped Ellison as its new chief executive in July. In recent months, he’s recruited another African American to its executive management ranks, and now three African Americans sit on its board of directors. And the dedication to building a leadership pipeline is evident: The company sent 22 of its brightest African American talent to ELC leadership training.

The bottom line: Opportunities for African Americans and other ethnic minorities tend to coincide with diverse leadership.

HOW WE CHOSE THE 50 BEST COMPANIES FOR DIVERSITY

Black Enterprise’s editorial research team, in partnership with the Executive Leadership Council, sent surveys to the nation’s top 1,000 publicly traded companies to get an in-depth look at the ethnic and gender composition, as well as their programs designed to foster an inclusive working environment.

The annual survey is centered around efforts focused on African Americans but includes other ethnic minority groups as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. Any information provided by companies on diversity efforts targeted toward women, LGBT, the disabled, and veterans was used as secondary, supporting data.

BE performed a quantitative and editorial assessment of all corporate respondents and measured each company’s diversity efforts using the following criteria:

  1. BE measured companies on four key categories: employee base, senior management, board of directors, and procurement. Senior management and board of directors’ categories were given a higher weighting based on company impact across the board. Procurement was also a major factor while employee base was given a lower weighting.
  2. We reviewed the status of companies across all BE diversity and corporate leadership lists, including The Top Companies for Supplier Diversity, The 300 Most Powerful Executives, Top Executives in Corporate Diversity, as well as companies who have chief diversity officers and/or designated diversity departments.
  3. We also considered those companies in which the CEO takes an active role in diversity practices.

Anita Hill: Companies Should Treat Sexual Harassment as an Abuse of Power

After the Congressional testimonies of Christine Blasey [f500link, ignore=true]Ford[/f500link] and Brett Kavanaugh in September, professor Anita Hill met with students at Brandeis University to discuss and process the event.

“There were a range of feelings,” said the attorney, known for her own testimony accusing then-U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. “Anger, a feeling of disgust with leadership, and unfortunately a feeling of abandonment–a sense that they were not recognized, their experiences weren’t recognized.”

Hill said the students have been very engaged in the effort to combat sexual violence on college campuses, where currently one in four women can expect to be sexually assaulted during their time at school.

“They have put a lot of energy in it and taken a lot of risk to make known the problem of sexual assault for their generation,” she said Wednesday at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Next Gen Summit in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

Many women felt rage watching the Kavanaugh confirmation, Hill acknowledged, but disagreed with the idea that the outcome–Kavanaugh was later confirmed–meant no progress had been made in the 27 years since her own appearance on Capitol Hill.

“Maybe the Senate hasn’t changed enough, but we have,” she said. “And there’s a new generation of women coming up who are going to be even more empowered for change.”

That change needs to be large and institutional, Hill told a ballroom of executives, from college campuses to the workplace.

“I think we have to understand the root problem for what it is,” she said. “It’s not just about sexual harassment. In many ways, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It is about the abuse of power that occurs.”

Hill added: “We have to see this as a problem of power–power alignment and abuse, overall.”

If you don’t look at the issue as a comprehensive problem, it’s like playing whac-a-mole attempting to address instances of harassment as they occur, Hill said. Organizations instead need to understand the ways that people in positions of power can, and do, take advantage of others in the workplace.

“One way abuse of power is manifested is through sexual harassment,” she said. “But it’s also manifested through pay inequity. It’s also manifested through lack of leadership opportunities. It’s also manifested just by day to day aggressions that occur.”

It’s the power dynamic that often makes it difficult for people to report sexual misconduct. In the workplace, 75% of employees who report sexual harassment experience retaliation from managers or coworkers.

Because the fear of retaliation is real, companies need to make it clear from the highest levels that sexual misconduct will not be tolerated and create a standard process to rectify reports of harassment, Hill said.

“We need to make sure that we have very clear policies that are accessible and let people know, if they come forward, exactly what is going to happen to them,” she said.

It’s also important an employee knows that there will be an outcome when an issue is raised, rather than it disappearing into a human resources file, Hill added. It will require organizations to implement strong policies and live up to the promises they make to workers to begin to reduce the rates of sexual assault and harassment.

“We have to view this as a cultural problem, not a behavioral problem,” Hill said. “Do not be content with the idea that if we fire one or two high profile people, we’ve changed the culture of an institution. That is just not accurate. It’s not true and it’s not going to be effective.”
