Macron Disses Trump in Front of Congress

Andrew Harrer/Getty

One may be forgiven for thinking that Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron are in love. Their remarkable body language—the air kisses, the back pats, the hand-holding, the dandruff brushing—has been the talk of the town on Macron’s state visit to Washington. But after listening to the French president’s speech to Congress on Wednesday, a question arises that could have enormous geopolitical consequences. What happens if the love of the mercurial American president turns to hate?

Does Trump understand how often Macron dissed his isolationism and exaltation of ignorance before the largely enraptured American legislators? (There were so many standing ovations it started to look like calisthenics.) Does Trump, who is always jealous of attention, and who demands unquestioning loyalty from the people around him, not see how powerfully opposed to his policies on trade, on the Iran nuclear deal, on climate change Macron really is?

Macron’s de rigueur opening joke was about Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin embracing and kissing, which “can remind you of something.” He then went into a long panegyric about the shared history of France and the United States during the American Revolution, World War I and World War II, talking about “the continuity of our shared history in a troubled world.” (Forgotten, it seems, are the “freedom fries” and the snarky American denunciations of “cheese eating surrender monkeys” when the French dared to oppose the U.S. invasion of Iraq as an act of monumental stupidity.)

Puerto Rico Warns of ‘Total Shutdown’ If Congress Doesn’t Send Money

Puerto Rico’s treasury secretary on Wednesday warned that the island will have to halt hurricane recovery efforts if Congress doesn’t provide billions in emergency funds by the end of the month. Treasury Secretary Raul Maldonado said $ 1.6 billion the Puerto Rican government had available before Hurricane Maria hit two weeks ago is rapidly disappearing amid ongoing recovery work. “I don’t have any collections, and we are spending a lot of money providing direct assistance for the emergency,” Maldonado was cited as saying by Bloomberg. While President Trump has repeatedly complained about the island’s $ 74 billion debt, Puerto Rican authorities are reportedly more worried about how they will get funds for fuel, salaries for recovery workers, and vital food aid for residents. Maldonado, who said he’s requested between $ 6 billion and $ 8 billion from Congress to last for several months, said the island will face a “total shutdown” on Nov. 1 if the emergency funding request is not approved.

Congress Wants to Get Rid of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

It could soon be open season for lenders to prey on people of color, now that twelve Republican senators are backing legislation to dismantle parts of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a signature law from former President Barack Obama and Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren. The group of Republican Senators is led by U.S. Senator David Perdue (R-GA), who introduced The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Accountability Act of 2017, which would place the CFPB under congressional oversight, instead of allowing the CFPB to receive independent funding as intended when Congress approved its creation in 2010.

Looking to the gut the agency is Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Representative John Ratcliffe (R-TX), who have introduced legislation this week to completely eliminate the CFPB—an agency that has provided 29 million people that were harmed by financial companies with monetary relief totaling more than $ 12 billion.

Minorities Vulnerable to Financial Abuse

Both proposals would leave families vulnerable to financial abuse and risk bringing back a financial crisis, says the Center for Responsible Lending’s Policy Counsel Yana Miles. “Passing either of these bills will revert us back to an era of reckless lending behaviors that led us to the Great Recession,” she said, in a statement. “The pernicious bill to undermine CFPB’s budget will embolden payday lenders and bad actors on Wall Street to continue influencing lawmakers to halt the Bureau’s funding, leaving consumers vulnerable to predatory abuse.”

Black borrowers in segregated cities have been preyed upon with subprime mortgages. Communities of color have been targets of predatory lenders offering a range of high-cost products. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which has been around just five years, was established to handle consumer complaints about banks, payday lenders, mortgage and student loan services, debt collectors, and other financial companies.

Related Story: Small Black Businesses Easy Prey for Predatory Lenders

CFPB Is Like a Beat Cop

By eliminating the CFPB, “Workers and families would suffer more from payday loan debt-traps, secret schemes like those committed by Wells Fargo, ensnarling arbitration clauses, deceptive for-profit colleges that drive students into bankruptcy, harassment from omnipresent debt collectors, home foreclosures, and other assaults by financial predators,” added Miles. “The CFPB has been an effective cop on the consumer finance beat, looking after the interest of working families, especially those in low-income communities and communities of color.”

An example cited by the Los Angeles Times about the CFPB is how the agency ordered MasterCard and media mogul Russell Simmons’ prepaid card company, UniRush, to repay $ 10 million to thousands of customers who were unable to access funds because of a service disruption last year. The two companies also were fined an additional $ 3 million.

However, Simmons, who co-founded the card in 2013, is not suffering. BLACK ENTERPRISE reported Greet Dot, a provider of prepaid debit cards, announced its acquisition of UniRush L.L.C. for $ 147 million, plus it will pay a minimum $ 4 million annual earn-out payment for five years. Simmons continues to represent and advocate the card.

After failed Senate vote, will Congress give these new health care ideas a chance?

WASHINGTON — Republican, Democratic and even bipartisan plans for reshaping parts of the Obama health care law are proliferating in Congress. But they have iffy prospects at best, and there were no signs Monday that GOP leaders have chosen a fresh pathway after last week’s collapse of their struggle to repeal and rewrite the statute.

Despite a weekend of tweets from President Donald Trump insisting that the Senate revisit the issue, Republican prospects for garnering 50 votes to push something through the chamber seemed to worsen after Sen. John McCain returned to Arizona for brain cancer treatments. He was among three GOP senators who joined Democrats in opposing a bare-bones bill rolling back a few pieces of President Barack Obama’s statute, dealing it a stunning 51-49 defeat, and his absence probably denies leaders their best chance of turning that vote around.

“If the question is do I think we should stay on health care until we get it done, I think it’s time to move on to something else,” said Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., a member of the GOP leadership team.

Rather than resuming its health care debate, the Senate began considering a judicial nomination Monday.

READ MORE: White House to Senate: Pass health bill now or else

In the House, 43 Democratic and Republican moderates proposed a plan that includes continuing federal payments that help insurers contain expenses for lower-earning customers and limiting Obama’s requirement that larger employers offer coverage to workers. But movements by House centrists seldom bear fruit in the House, where the rules give the majority party ironclad control, and Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., offered little encouragement.

“While the speaker appreciates members coming together to promote ideas, he remains focused on repealing and replacing Obamacare,” said Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong.

The House approved its health care overhaul in May after barely overcoming its own GOP divisions.

Trump has threatened anew in recent days to cut off the payments to insurers, which total $ 7 billion this year and are helping trim out-of-pocket costs for 7 million people. White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said Trump will decide this week whether to pay them in August, and insurers have cited the monthly uncertainty as a factor in rising premiums.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said GOP leaders should “follow the example of their members releasing some proposals with Democrats today” and engage in “serious bipartisan conversations,” but she didn’t specifically endorse the bipartisan proposals.

White House says Trump to decide soon on ending health payments

The group was led by Reps. Tom Reed, R-N.Y., and Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J. One proposal would require companies with at least 500 workers to offer coverage, up from the Obama law’s cutoff of 50 workers.

Hoping to find some way forward, health secretary Tom Price met with some governors and Louisiana Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy. Among those attending was Republican Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, who’s been trying to defend his state’s expansion of Medicaid, the health insurance program for poor people, against proposed GOP cuts.

Cassidy said they discussed ideas that could be next steps. “I will continue to discuss these ideas with the administration, governors and folks back home, because the American people need relief,” he said.

Price said last week that the administration would advance its health care goals using regulations that Congress does not have to approve.

Cassidy and Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Dean Heller, R-Nev., have proposed converting the $ 110 billion they estimate Obama’s law spends yearly for health insurance into grants states could use for health programs as they see fit.

Shortly after the Senate rejected his last-ditch bill Friday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., invited Democrats to present their ideas on the issue. But he quickly constructed an obstacle for one top Democratic desire: continuing the payments to insurers.

“Bailing out insurance companies with no thought of any kind of reform is not something I want to be part of,” McConnell said.

“Bailing out insurance companies with no thought of any kind of reform is not something I want to be part of,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

Obama’s statute requires that insurers reduce those costs for low-earning customers. Kristine Grow, spokeswoman for the insurance industry group America’s Health Insurance Plans, said Monday that halting the federal payments would boost premiums for people buying individual policies by 20 percent.

Besides continuing those payments, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has pushed two other Democratic proposals.

Under one by Sens. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Tom Carper of Delaware, the federal government would help pay larger than expected claims for insurers providing coverage on the federal and state online marketplaces established by Obama’s law.

Another by Sen. Clare McCaskill of Missouri would let people in counties where no insurers offer policies on exchanges buy the same coverage that members of Congress purchase. The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimated last week that exchanges would offer no coverage next year in 40 of the country’s roughly 3,000 counties.

Tennessee’s two GOP senators — Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker — have suggested legislation that would let people in counties without available coverage on their exchanges to use the Obama law’s tax credits to buy individual policies outside of those marketplaces.

Congress Members Weigh in on Diversity in Hollywood

Last month, the Congressional Caucus on Multicultural Media hosted its inaugural media summit in Washington, D.C in conjunction with the National Urban League. Chaired by Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), the Multicultural Media Caucus focuses on increasing diversity in media and Hollywood.

The summit featured a panel discussion on the 2017 Hollywood Diversity Report, the fourth in a series of annual reports to examine relationships between diversity and the bottom line in the entertainment industry. According to a press release, it considers the top 200 theatrical film releases in 2015 and 1,206 broadcast, cable, and digital platform television shows from the 2014-15 season in order to document the degree to which women and minorities are represented in front of and behind the camera.

“We will be focusing like a laser on the issues and encourage participation in the discussion because we know that from the boardroom to the control that diversity in media and telecommunications is vital,” said Clarke.

“Having us at the table is not just good for representation but it is good for business as well,” she added.

Media is a broad and expansive landscape of content that is delivered through many mediums including internet, TV, radio, and mobile devices. Marc H. Morial, National Urban League (NUL) president and CEO, discussed the importance of treating diversity for what it is—as a business proposition.

“Media is a form of educating, and a form of inspiring. But media is also an important huge money industry in America, and we cannot be hesitant to discuss the economic cost of this vast and growing industry,” said Morial.

He also pointed out, “It is important to recognize the strategies, efforts, and work that has been undertaken by many people to push the envelope when it comes to diversity and media in America today.”

Some takeaways on the state of diversity in entertainment from the summit and report:

– Minority actors landed 11.4% of the lead roles on broadcast scripted television, an increase of more than 3 percentage points over the previous year. Broadcast television shows such as Fox’s Empire and the CW’s Jane the Virgin,” whose casts are primarily people of color, more than doubled—from just 3.3% of all shows in 2013-14 to 8.9% in 2014-15.

– For the 2014-15 season, 3% of broadcast scripted shows had a majority of minority writers.

-Modest gains were recorded by women as leads in scripted broadcast and cable TV shows with increases of 2.4% in both categories.

– Women now account for 20.9% of show creators in scripted cable shows, an increase of 2.7 percentage points over the year prior.

– In the digital programming space, women also saw significant growth. Women were listed as creators of 20.4% of scripted shows on streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon. Shows such as Jill Soloway’s dramedy Transparent, helped this segment jump nearly 5 percentage points from 2013-14.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

Trump-Supporting Soap Star Is Running For Congress

Former “General Hospital” cast member Antonio Sabato Jr., a Republican who supported Donald Trump’s campaign for president, is launching a mid-life career switch with a campaign for Congress.

The 45-year-old actor filed campaign documents with the Federal Election Commission on Monday for California’s 26th Congressional District seat, according to CNN.com. The incumbent is Rep. Julia Brownley (D).

GOP strategist Charles Moran, who is raising funds for Sabato’s campaign, confirmed the run. Sabato will point out to voters that he’s “a member of the majority party who has good relations with the Trump administration,” Moran told CNN.

Sabato, who also had a role on “Melrose Place,” has always been interested in politics and policy, but was inspired to run after speaking at the Republican National Convention last summer, according to the Los Angeles Times.

During the convention, Sabato falsely told ABC News that Barack Obama is “absolutely” a Muslim.

“We had a Muslim president for seven and a half years,” Sabato said then.

Sabato later claimed his acting career suffered because of his support for Trump.

“I’ve had fantastic directors who have said officially to my agents and managers they will never hire me again,” he told Variety.com. “They will never even see me for projects. That’s unfair. It’s just like communism.”

If elected, Sabato will focus on veteran’s issues and substance abuse, Moran told the Los Angeles Times.

47 Republican Senators Write Letter to Queen Demanding Congress Approves Royal Baby Name

The 47 letter writers, otherwise known as virtually all the Republicans in the Senate, have put pen to paper again.

Led once more by self-proclaimed international law expert Tom Cotton, the Senators have written to the Queen of England to express their profound displeasure at not being consulted about the new royal baby name.

Their latest missive was delivered to Buckingham Palace today and stated the following:

Dear Queen Elizabeth II, or if you prefer, dear Supreme Ruler of Great Britain,

It has come to our attention through leading diplomatic sources — People Magazine, The National Enquirer and The New York Post — that Her Royal Highness, Kate the Duchess of God-Knows-Where, has given birth to a child and named it Charlotte, Elizabeth, Diana without our permission.

We Americans would have undoubtedly chosen Jolene, Mary Lou or Tammy Fay. Thus, we consider the names that you have picked to be nuclear options and reflective of the growing proliferation in your country of names that are too British-sounding, to say the least.

This is unacceptable to us and may fundamentally undermine diplomatic relations between our two great nations. (Well we’re great. You however, are not, despite the fact that you still use the word “Great” in your country’s name.)

We are therefore writing to remind you that as you are a signatory of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance — the entente that established NATO just in case you didn’t know — you will have to obtain agreement from the US Government before this baby’s name becomes official.

And although you may be tempted to deal with our lame duck and chicken-livered President, Barack Obama, on this matter, please be advised that Congress alone has the power to approve royal baby names! Which means dear Madam, you are going to have to negotiate with us!

So given our declared opposition to your chosen names, we would urge you to submit alternatives for our consideration. If Jolene, Mary Lou or Tammy Fay do not pass royal muster, we are prepared, in the interests of diplomacy, to consider Billie Jo, Peggy Sue, or Trixie Bell. At a push, we might even be persuaded to approve Chardonnay.

We hope this clarifies our position with regard to the royal baby name and we look forward to hearing from you forthwith.

As news of the letter to the Queen reverberated around Washington D.C., and outrage about it increased, 46 of the 47 Republican Senators who signed it ran for cover, leaving Tom Cotton holding the bag — or as Brits like to say, holding the baby.

Cotton, in a desperate attempt to avoid an international incident, said: “OK, OK, Chardonnay might be a name too far. Trixie Bell it is then! I will introduce a bill to that effect tomorrow and I expect it to be passed quickly by my colleagues in the House and the Senate.”

In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, the Queen also made her views known on the letter from the 47. She said: I would like to thank the 47 Republican Senators for sharing their thoughts with me on this matter. And I would particularly like to thank their ancestors for the American Declaration of Independence.”
