Judge Orders File In Jussie Smollett Criminal Case Unsealed

CHICAGO (AP) — A judge in Chicago has ordered the file in the Jussie Smollett criminal case unsealed.

Cook County Judge Steven Watkins said Thursday that while there are good arguments in favor of keeping the file sealed, the “Empire” actor forfeited his rights to keep the case sealed to protect his privacy by talking to the media before and after prosecutors dismissed the charges against him.

Smollett had been charged with 16 counts alleging he lied to police when reporting he’d been the victim of a racist, anti-gay attack in January. Police insist the actor, who is black and gay, staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary and wanted publicity.

Prosecutors dropped all charges with little explanation.

The criminal case was dismissed March 26. Smollett wanted the case sealed, saying that he had “the right to be left alone.”

Jussie Smollett Returns to Set, Tells ‘Empire’ Cast He’s Innocent + Feels ‘Betrayed’ By the Criminal Justice System [Video]

Jussie Smollett returned to work on ‘Empire’ today after getting arrested and charged with felony disorderly conduct for allegedly faking his hate crime.

via TMZ:

Sources on the “Empire” set tell us the cast and crew were waiting at least 30 minutes for Jussie to begin the scheduled scene. When he eventually showed his face he was very emotional, and surrounded by his family.

We’re told he addressed everyone on set, saying …”I’m sorry I’ve put you all through this and not answered any calls. I wanted to say I’m sorry and, you know me, I would never do this to any of you, you are my family. I swear to God, I did not do this.”

After that, he left the set. We’re told it was obvious Jussie had been crying a lot, so producers said he would have to come back later. He did, and we’re told he is currently shooting the scene.

Aside from that, his reps released a statement saying he ‘feels betrayed’ by the criminal justice system.

“Today we witnessed an organized law enforcement spectacle that has no place in the American legal system,” read a statement put out on the actor’s behalf following his release from custody Thursday afternoon. “The presumption of innocence, a bedrock in the search for justice, was trampled upon at the expense of Mr. Smollett and notably, on the eve of a Mayoral election. Mr. Smollett is a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence and feels betrayed by a system that apparently wants to skip due process and proceed directly to sentencing.”

Jussie was released from Chicago police custody after posting bail and surrendering his passport during a bond hearing in front of State of Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County Judge John Fitzgerald Lyke Jr.

His bail was set at $ 100,000, with the actor required to post $ 10,000 (10 percent) for release.

If you’re still scratching your head as to how this unfolded, take a look at the bond proffer released today.

Sorry, bad foreign policy isn’t a criminal offense

The New York Times recently reported that President Trump has, on a number of occasions, contemplated withdrawing from NATO. This is an important issue for public debate and, ultimately, for elections. There is, however, no constitutional amendment codifying a forever-alliance with select European nations. So if Trump decided to try to pull out of the…

TIDAL Is Undergoing a Criminal Investigation in Norway for Falsifying Streaming Numbers

JAY-Z’s TIDAL streaming service is currently undergoing a criminal investigation in Norway for allegedly “faking” streams for Beyoncé’s Lemonade and Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo.

Last year, TIDAL was exposed by Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv, who obtained a hard drive containing tampered data. Roughly 1.3 million fake accounts were supposedly used to stream the albums, with the streaming service paying out increased royalty fees to the artists and their respective record labels.

After allegations surfaced last year, four police complaints were filed by the Norwegian copyright association Tono SA, the artist organization Gramart, Fono, and the Musicians’ Union in Norway.

On January 14, ØKOKRIM (The Norwegian National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime) confirmed that it has launched a formal criminal investigation regarding the allegations against the company.

In 2015, Norwegian technology company Aspiro was bought out by JAY-Z’s Project Panther Bico Ltd.. Aspiro currently maintains TIDAL.

Make sure to keep your eyes peeled as the story unfolds further.

The critics’ case against criminal justice reform is pathetic

The federal sentencing reforms that Donald Trump endorsed last week could shorten the terms of 2,700 or so drug offenders who are already in prison and perhaps another 2,200 who are sent there each year. That amounts to 1.5 percent of the current federal prison population and 3 percent of the federal defendants sentenced in…
