New recommendations say not all women need genetic testing for cancer. Critics say it could cost lives

Critics Choice Awards: ‘Roma,’ ‘Black Panther’ And ‘Vice’ Are Top Winners

(Los Angeles, CA) – The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) announced the winners of the 24th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards, live from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Hollywood’s brightest shined at the gala event, which aired on The CW Network and was hosted by acclaimed film, television, and stage star Taye Diggs.

In the film categories, “Roma” took home four awards, the most of the night, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography for Alfonso Cuarón, and Best Foreign Language Film. “Black Panther” and “Vice” followed close behind, each winning in three categories.

The top film acting awards resulted in a tie for Best Actress between Glenn Close for “The Wife” and Lady Gaga for “A Star Is Born,” while Best Actor was bestowed upon Christian Bale for his transformative performance in “Vice.” Best Supporting Actor went to Mahershala Ali for “Green Book” and Regina King took home the Best Supporting Actress award for her work in “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” took home three awards, including Best Comedy Series for the second consecutive year. Its leading lady, Rachel Brosnahan, was also a repeat winner for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to Alex Borstein. “The Americans” earned three trophies as well including Best Drama Series, Best Actor in A Drama Series for Matthew Rhys, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Noah Emmerich. Sandra Oh received Best Actress in a Drama Series honors for “Killing Eve,” with Best Actor in a Comedy Series going to Bill Hader for “Barry.”

As previously announced, Best Supporting Actress nominee Claire Foy received the Critics’ Choice #SeeHer Award, which was presented by former #SeeHer Award recipient Viola Davis. Chuck Lorre, creator of such acclaimed TV comedies as “The Big Bang Theory,” “Mom,” “Young Sheldon,” and “The Kominsky Method” (which all received Critics’ Choice Award nominations this year), was honored with the Critics’ Choice Creative Achievement Award. The cast of “The Big Bang Theory,” including Mayim Bialik, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Jim Parsons, and Melissa Rauch, was on hand to recognize Lorre, just in time to celebrate the show’s final season.

Other major winners on the film side included Elsie Fisher for Best Young Actor/Actress in “Eighth Grade,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” for Best Action Movie, “Crazy Rich Asians” for Best Comedy, “A Quiet Place” for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film, and “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” for Best Song.

Critics’ Choice Awards are bestowed annually by the BFCA and BTJA to honor the finest in cinematic and television achievement. The BFCA is the largest film critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 330 television, radio and online critics. BFCA members are the primary source of information for today’s film-going public. BTJA is the collective voice of journalists who regularly cover television for TV viewers, radio listeners and online audiences. Historically, the Critics’ Choice Awards are the most accurate predictor of the Academy Award nominations.

The 24th annual Critics’ Choice Awards show was produced by Bob Bain Productions and Berlin Entertainment. The BFCA and BTJA are represented by Dan Black of Greenberg Traurig and WME.

The critics who hated the Dick Cheney biopic ‘Vice’ really, really hated it

TwitterFacebook

When it comes to Adam McKay’s VICE, critics are on very different sides of the (theater) aisle.

Despite early and persistent Oscar buzz (the film scored six Golden Globe noms), the Dick Cheney biopic has received a fairly mixed first wave of critical reception. While some laud the film as cleverly biting, others have denounced it as a clumsy display of political hatred.

Starring Christian Bale, Sam Rockwell, and Amy Adams, VICE uses a nonlinear structure to walk audiences through the political career of “the most powerful vice president” in modern American history. Touching on Cheney’s rise to national politics and yes, his involvement in the Iraq War, VICE paints a controversial portrait of an even more controversial figure. Read more…

Trump’s critics were dead wrong about the caravan after all

The critics’ case against criminal justice reform is pathetic

The federal sentencing reforms that Donald Trump endorsed last week could shorten the terms of 2,700 or so drug offenders who are already in prison and perhaps another 2,200 who are sent there each year. Here Is What The Critics Are Saying About The PlayStation Classic So Far

Sony PlayStation Classic reviews

Source: Sony / PlayStation

When Sony first announced it was joining in on the retro console fun with the PlayStation Classic everyone was excited at the news. Critics were able to preview the mini PS One, and they were not too impressed.

Back in October Sony revealed the complete list of titles that would be featured on the miniature version of the first PlayStation console. It didn’t blow many away leaving much to be desired and now with hands-on reviews rolling in it’s looking like the PlayStation Classic is an enjoyable but incomplete nostalgic experience for fans of the PlayStation system.

Chris Kohler of Kotaku:

“Bare-bones” is probably the most accurate summation I can give of the PlayStation Classic so far. There are no special screen borders or graphic display options. There’s a QR code that will load up manuals on the PlayStation website, but it wasn’t functional during the preview event. There’s a screensaver option that will dim the screen after a few minutes. Even the game selection menu itself is strictly utilitarian; there’s no nostalgic theme song or other cute additions.”

Jonathon Dornbush of IGN:

“I undoubtedly had my fun with a few entries, and could certainly see myself being sucked back into more of Midgar or Snake’s exploits. The list isn’t packed with heavy hitters, though, and knowing what defined the console but didn’t end up being included, along with the lack of nostalgic bells and whistles, can make even those great aspects of the PlayStation Classic feel like part of an incomplete whole.”

Nick Pino of Tech Radar:

“Because it doesn’t rely on the best-remembered games from the ’90s, the PlayStation Classic isn’t quite everything we hoped it’d be. That said, what we feel it lacks in software is made up, in part, by its lovingly crafted hardware.”

There was one positive preview/review from The Verge that did have a few complaints as far as the console’s use or wired controllers and questionable choices for its game lineup. Here is what Nick Statt had to say about the PlayStation Classic:

“Now, if you’re a hardcore fan who remembers those games like you played them yesterday, you’ll probably be fine. But it’s worth noting that this era, while a golden one for a certain type of game fan, is not going to be quite as accessible as the SNES generation of hits. The Verge will have a more comprehensive evaluation of the PS Classic’s lineup later this month when we get our hands on a proper review unit and spend some more time with the device’s library.

All that said, the PS Classic is a faithful and well-made little device, and it’s easy to see how popular it will be among former PS1 owners.”

While those reviews are not very encouraging, we still expect to PS Classic to sell like hotcakes when it arrives December 3rd cause for $ 99 you still are getting a decent retro console. Will these reviews affect your decision to purchase one? Let us know below.
