Emilia Clarke Discusses Surviving Life-Threatening Brain Aneurysms During Her Early Game of Thrones Days

Emilia Clarke has opened up about surviving two life-threatening brain aneurysms during the early days of Game of Thrones.

In an article for the New Yorker, Clarke spoke publicly for the first time about suffering two brain aneurysms, the first of which struck shortly after she finished filming her scenes as Daenerys Targaryen for season 1 of Game of Thrones. She revealed that she experienced her first aneurysm at 24 years old while working out with her trainer.

“I immediately felt as though an elastic band were squeezing my brain. I tried to ignore the pain and push through it, but I just couldn’t. I told my trainer I had to take a break,” she wrote. “Somehow, almost crawling, I made it to the locker room. I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill. Meanwhile, the pain—shooting, stabbing, constricting pain—was getting worse. At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged.”

Clarke was rushed to the hospital where she underwent “minimally invasive” surgery for a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a.k.a. bleeding in the brain. A little more than two weeks after her surgery, Clarke discovered that she was suffering from aphasia, a condition that impairs a person’s ability to process language. In Clarke’s case, she couldn’t recall her own name.

“I’d never experienced fear like that—a sense of doom closing in,” she said of that time period. “I could see my life ahead, and it wasn’t worth living. I am an actor; I need to remember my lines. Now I couldn’t recall my name…In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug. I asked the medical staff to let me die. My job—my entire dream of what my life would be—centered on language, on communication. Without that, I was lost.”

The aphasia passed after about a week, but before Clarke left the hospital, she was told that she had a smaller aneurysm on the other side of her brain that could “pop” at any time. Two years later, when she went in for a brain scan after finishing season 3 of Game of Thrones, doctors told her that the aneurysm had doubled in size and it would be best to “take care of it.”

Although she was promised a relatively simple operation, the procedure failed and Clarke was left with a massive brain bleed that required a subsequent fully invasive surgery. But in spite of all the complications, Clarke said that she has fully recovered in the years since.

“I have healed beyond my most unreasonable hopes,” she wrote. “I am now at a hundred per cent.”

Five Days After a Crash, Lindsey Vonn Wins Bronze Medal in Final Race of Her Career

(ARE, Sweden) — Lindsey Vonn walked off with her career haul of medals in her right hand, the gold, silver and bronze clinking together almost weighing her down.

Or was it the bulging knee braces and metal support rods inside her vast array of broken bones?

Whatever it was, the sound was a reminder of what Vonn has come to symbolize — an athlete who battled back from one major injury after another throughout her career to win more ski races than any other woman.

Add one more — final — comeback to the list.

Five days after crashing in super-G — a fall that knocked the wind out of her and left her with a black eye and a bruised rib — and three months after tearing a ligament in her left knee, Vonn won the bronze medal in the world championship downhill Sunday in the final race of her career.

She’s shed so many tears that there are none left — just like she no longer has any cartilage in her knees.

“I’m literally tapped out, I can’t cry anymore,” Vonn said. “I want to cry but it’s dry. … It’s not an easy thing to feel your bones hitting together and continue to push through it.

“Of course I’m sore. Even before the crash I was sore. So I’m just sore on top of sore. My neck is killing me,” Vonn said. “But at the end of the day no one cares if my neck hurts; they only care if I win. … I knew that I was capable of pushing through the pain one last time and I did that. … Every athlete has their own obstacles and I faced mine head on today and I conquered them.”

Vonn had been planning on retiring in December but she recently moved up her plans due to persistent pain in both of her surgically repaired knees. Then came the super-G crash, when she straddled a gate in midair, flew face first down the mountain and slammed into the safety nets.

“She has been business as usual this whole week, saying I’m racing to win,” said Karin Kildow, Vonn’s sister. “I was like, ‘Just maybe make it down and maybe stand up.’ But she was like, ‘No, I’m going full out’. She was definitely in the mindset to push it and she really did.”

It’s a medal that brings Vonn full circle: the American’s two silvers at the 2007 worlds on the same course in Are were the first two major championship medals of her career.

“I was weighing in my mind the risk of putting it all out there, crashing and getting injured again, as opposed to finishing where I wanted to,” Vonn said. “It was an internal battle.”

As soon as she exited the finish area, Vonn embraced Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark, the only skier to win more World Cup races than she did — 86 to 82.

“I basically begged him to come here via text, in all caps, many exclamation points,” Vonn said. “He’s an icon and a legend in our sport and he doesn’t really like the spotlight but he deserves to have it. I was just so grateful that he was there. Honestly, it’s a perfect ending to my career.”

The third skier on the course, Vonn had a big smile on her face when she came down with the fastest run to that point. She waved and bowed to the crowd.

Eventually, Ilka Stuhec of Slovenia beat Vonn and took gold, defending her title from the 2017 worlds. Stuhec finished 0.23 seconds ahead of silver medalist Corinne Suter of Switzerland and 0.49 ahead of Vonn.

“Not many were counting on (Vonn) to get the medal in her last race, which makes it even more special,” Stuhec said. “She has won everything.”

Vonn became the first female skier to win medals at six different world championships. It’s also her fifth downhill medal at a worlds, matching the record established by Annemarie Moser-Proell and Christel Cranz.

“Thank You Lindsey: Forever A Star,” read one sign positioned by the side of the course.

Four U.S. flags were in the grandstand when Vonn came down and there were quite a few cheers when she started her run wearing a suit with blue-and-yellow trim — Sweden’s colors — to honor Stenmark.

“She really deserves this sendoff from her great career,” said Eleanor Bodin, a 21-year-old fan from Sweden who was holding up a sign saying “Thank You Lindsey.”

“She has been my favorite skier since 2008 when I saw her winning on television,” Bodin said. “I was a little girl sitting on the sofa. I just thought what a great skier and inspiration.”

At 34, Vonn eclipsed her own record from two years ago for oldest woman to win a medal at a worlds.

Fog and wind forced organizers to shorten the course to the second reserve start, which favored Vonn because it reduced the strain on her knees.

Now she can finally let her body heel and move onto the next phase of her life — possibly acting, having children, starting a business .

“I’m looking forward to just chilling out a bit and recovering everything, including my mind,” Vonn said. “It’s been a lot to process.

“The nice thing is that, in the real world I’m actually pretty young. I have felt really old for a long time, because I’m racing with girls that are like 15 years younger than me. So now, in the real world, I’m normal. Thirty is the new 20 so I’m super young. I’ve got a lot to look forward to.”

Nick Knowles ‘struggled’ to eat for 5 days following I’m A Celeb stint

OHMYGOSSIP — Nick Knowles “struggled” to eat for five days when he returned from the ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ jungle.
The 56-year-old TV presenter finished sixth on the ITV series, and now the star has revealed that his body went into a five-day fast and was in “super-shock” because it was “terrified” of having to ration food again.
Speaking on ‘This Morning’, Nick said: “[I lost] 14-and-a-half kilos in 20 days. I lost a kilo a day.
“It was very, very intense, and I have to say of all the stuff I’ve ever done, that was the most difficult.
“But weirdly the stuff that wears you out is the stuff you don’t really see on the programme.
“It’s going backwards and forwards, up the huge long flight of stairs to get the water and the logs. You can’t sit around and lose almost a kilo a day.
“I really struggled [to eat] for about five days, and then I went into super-shock and I then ate and ate and ate, and put pounds back on – it’s like my body is terrified it’s going to happen again.
“We have a WhatsApp group with all the guys together and we’re texting each other at four in the morning saying ‘Someone stop me eating!’ ”
Nick also confessed that the ‘I’m A Celeb’ production team would go to any lengths to “get under” the celebrities’ “skin”, however, it made their bond together stronger.
He added: “We said, ‘They’re going to do anything they can to get under our skin, so if we get tighter the tougher it gets for them.’
“They try to get you under your skin – they make you tired, they make you hungry, it’s us versus them.
“You set yourself up, it’s not us versus the production team but if you get into that mind-set you bond together.”

Travel Capsule: Eight Days in the Netherlands

Two weeks ago I flew back to the Netherlands to see my Dad and this is what I packed. I do the same trip every few months and have prepping for it down to a fine art. It takes me half an hour to decide what to bring after I’ve studied the weather forecast and finalized which pairs of shoes make the cut. I keep things simple by creating a daily outfit formula, and slotting my current favourite wardrobe items into the formula.

The weather was a wet and windy 2 to 11 degrees Celsius (35 to 51 degrees Fahrenheit). The wind and damp make it feel colder than sunny, still and dry weather at the same temperature, especially when you’re on foot and taking public transport.

I opted for the following practical outfit formula to wear each day:

Trendy Jeans + Fun Pullover + Coat/Jacket + Comfy Shoes + Bright Bag + Scarf/Hat/Umbrella

A few things upfront before I delve into the details:

  • I visited family, saw dear friend Inge, did errands, organized, shopped, ate out, and went to appointments. I hung out with my Dad in his home town of Velp, with daily trips to nearby Arnhem (a 15-minute bus ride). These very quaint and local towns are on the east side of the Netherlands and close to the German border. They are about an hour and a half away from Amsterdam.
  • I kept my outfits on the dressier side of casual because that’s true to my style.
  • I put a suitcase in the hold because I like to have more dressing options than a carry-on can accommodate. I also bring back presents for family, and do some shopping, which requires extra space.
  • I did not do laundry on the trip.
  • I can keep white and cream wardrobe items clean, and have been travelling with them for years. It’s a complete non-issue.
  • The capsule excludes the outfit that I wore on both non-stop ten-hour flights. It’s the same outfit, and I’ve shown the components at the end of this post.

Palette

I crave a change in colour more than a change in silhouette from day to day. This is why the palette of my capsule is colour-rich, yet the items create the same daily uniform. I kept things neutral with blue jeans, an animal print coat and navy puffer, but went to town with brights and stripes in the tops and accessories. White footwear makes my outfits crisp, bookends my hair, and adds a bright touch to my look. There was zero black in the palette. The darks that you see are navy and ink blue.

Most of the components can be mixed and matched with each other because I like to pattern mix and wear several brights together. That said, I ensured I could wear neutral from head to toe when the mood struck me. I could also choose a dressier outfit or a more casual one.

Footwear

I build a travel capsule around my shoes because it’s extremely important to have happy feet when you’re walking around a city and using public transport. Once I knew which ultra comfortable shoes I was taking, I planned the rest of the outfits to work with them. Both pairs of shoes are tried and tested 20,000-step city shoes.

I chose my new white boots because white or cream footwear is signature to my style. I chose cream hi-top sneakers because their fleece lining is very warm, and the grippy soles are good in grotty weather. They are my most comfortable shoes of all time. I wore the shoes with socks or knee-highs to keep warm. I wore the sneakers a little more often than the boots because of the rain.

Bottoms

I brought three pairs of trendy jeans so that my outfits looked fashionable and a little unique amidst a sea of Modern Classic skinnies. I wore the glitzy Simkhai Cig and GRLFRND Carpenter jeans the most because they’re dressier than the light-wash Levi’s Wedgies. Dark-wash jeans made the casual cashmere hoodie and navy puffer feel dressier too. My Dad adored the gold hardware on the Simkhai’s so I wore those the most. Who knew he liked glitz! All bottoms worked equally well with boots and sneakers.

Tops

I packed seven warm pullovers for eight days which was more than I needed. But I wanted the festive variety, so why not. I stuck to fine gauge knits because it’s easier to pack, but had ample variety in colour, solid, pattern and silhouette. Cropped, hoodie, classic, vented, lantern-sleeved, neck tie, and turtleneck. Each pullover worked well with either bottom. I was toasty warm with a camisole layered underneath.

Outerwear

I get bored wearing the same outerwear for eight days straight so I brought a dressier coat, and a short Sporty puffer. I chose my animal print coat because it’s on-trend, and a short puffer because it’s practical and warm. They worked well over every top, and with either pair of jeans or shoes. I wore each topper equally  and was happy to have two to choose from.

Accessories

I packed many accessories because they change up my look, create a maximal vibe, keep me warm, and don’t take up space. I chose two scarves – one patterned, one solid – that can work across any of the outfits in the capsule because I like bold colour combinations, and enjoy pattern mixing. The orange scarf creates a twinset effect with the orange pullover. I chose a watermelon crossbody because it’s matchy-matchy with my new watermelon specs, and easy for travel. It’s a dressy Furla because casual bags are not my thing, and I like the way they amp up a pair of jeans and sneakers. A cream beret was essential for walking in the cold morning and night. I wore my pearl necklace with every pullover except the striped turtleneck. I wore my pearl wedding ring, bracelets and specs daily. I added a pair of statement socks to outfits when the colour perfectly matched my pullovers. I took along sunnies and gloves, but didn’t wear them.

I also packed an umbrella and cashmere wrap. I’ve left the wrap out of the capsule because it was not styled into these outfits. It’s loungewear and a cosy blanket and scarf for plane travel only.

Travel Outfit

This is the exact outfit that I wore on the flight out to Amsterdam, and the flight back to Seattle eight days later. It follows my strategy for what to wear on long flights. Layers, fabrics with stretch, fluid fits, and soft textures are cosy, comfortable and insulating for plane travel. A jacket, scarf and dressy bag make my casual outfit look pulled together and polished. Comfortable shoes are essential when traipsing through airports and catching public transport with luggage. The toffee flares, cream top, wrap and denim jacket that I wore on both flights did not get worn during my trip, which is why they’ve been excluded from the travel capsule.

You can visit the collection page to see my travel capsule in its entirety. It ticked off all the boxes and worked very well. I posted photos of some of the outfits on our forum along the way:

Travel Capsule

The picture above shows the items just before I started packing. After giving his paw of approval, mini in-house Fashion Stylist Sam was bored and wanted to play.

How Many Vacation Days Did You Use This Year?

how many vacation days did you use this year

How many vacation days did you use this year, readers — and what did you DO with your vacation? As 2018 comes to a close, it’s always a great idea to review your vacation days to make sure you’re using them properly (especially if they’re use-or-lose!), and we’d love to hear how many of you are already planning for vacations in 2019! When we’ve asked in the past about vacation time, 40% of you had used less than 50% of your time for the year (whoa!).

I’ve never had the luxury of working a job where vacation days rolled over, so I’ve always tried to make the most of vacation time by taking a lot of long weekend vacations and staycations. For the past few years with the kids, I’ve told myself to just buy airline tickets as soon as we have the school calendar, and deal with hotels and research as the trip gets closer — to force us to actually go places — but I’m still struggling to master the vacation that is planned really early. We’re looking at some international travel this summer, as well as a trip to “Harry Potterland” (Universal Studios) that my 7-year-old may or may not accept as a viable Christmas present, but we’ve yet to pull the trigger on anything.

For those of you who are great at vacation planning (or finding fabulous vacation packages), I’d love to hear from you: How many months ahead are you planning? If you get, say 20 days of vacation for 2019, how many do you vacation days do you “use” ahead of time? For those of you with partners, if you get more vacation (or less) than your partner, how do you deal?

Since the stock photo features a bag — and it is the season for gift-giving — anyone have any favorite travel gear to shout out? I’ve heard great things about Away luggage but I haven’t tried it yet.

How many vacation days did YOU use this year? If you're wondering what's normal vacation use is for career women -- and want to see how they make the most of their vacation time -- then this is the post for you! Lots of comments from women lawyers, professors and more!

Sen. James Inhofe Bought Defense Stock Days After Pushing For Record Pentagon Spending—Then Dumped It When Asked About It

Chip Somodevilla/Getty

Just days after signaling his support for unprecedented levels of U.S. defense spending, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, reported purchasing tens of thousands of dollars of stock in one of the nation’s top defense contractors.

After The Daily Beast asked about the purchase, Inhofe’s office said the senator had contacted his financial adviser to cancel the transaction and instructed him to avoid defense and aerospace purchases going forward.

Inhofe, who took over the top spot on Armed Services after the death of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in August, has repeatedly pressed President Donald Trump to dramatically scale up the Pentagon’s annual budget, which currently stands at $ 717 billion. Last week, after Trump hinted he would like to scale back parts of that budget, the Senator had a meeting with the president and Defense Secretary James Mattis, after which it was announced that the administration would seek even more defense funding: a record $ 750 billion in spending for fiscal year 2020.

She added: “I love food so much, I love cheese and champagne and salads, fries, yum.”

The shower scenes go down a treat with fans each year and tonight was no exception.

One viewer who won’t be so keen on seeing Harry shower, though, is his former Liverpool and England midfielder son Jamie, 45, who previously said: “Dad hasn’t really got any phobias, to be honest.Emily Atack

Emily Atack admitted to The Sun that she is looking for love

“As a kid he was never worried about spiders. I’m worried about him with the shower scene in his pants!

“I hope he finds a mate in there because from people I’ve spoken to the hardest things are lack of food, but he doesn’t eat a lot my dad so that’s gonna help him, and secondly it’s the boredom factor, there’s no racing channel for him to watch.”

Kate Beckinsale spotted in Jack Whitehall’s hometown days after their steamy kiss

KATE Beckinsale was in lover Jack Whitehall’s home town today, just days after they were snapped kissing at the weekend.

The movie star, 45, and the comedian, 30, set tongues wagging when they were spotted in a steamy LA nightclub clinch before heading to a hotel to continue the fun.

Today Kate was back on British soil to shoot new movie Toff Guys with Hollywood hunk Matthew Mcconaughey.

Dressed casually in jeans and fluffy jacket, the actress looked in good spirits as she met crew on set.

She wore her long hair in a high high ponytail and shielded her eyes with a pair of oversized sunglasses.

But it looks like her trip to London might not be all work and no play, as the stunning actress was just miles from where here new beau Jack lives.

Jack and Kate hit the headlines after they were caught in a romantic tryst at the weekend.

The pair had enjoyed a meal at the restaurant Craig’s, a popular celeb hangout in Hollywood, before heading to the Blind Dragon karaoke lounge, where they were seen snogging.

They were then snapped entering The London Hotel at 3am looking very cosy.

Two months ago Kate, a divorced mother of one, was pictured with on-off American toyboy Matt Rife.

Like Jack, 23-year-old Matt is a stand-up comedian.

An onlooker said: “No one would expect someone like Jack to bag one of Hollywood’s hottest actresses. You couldn’t get a more unlikely romance.

“They were like a pair of loved-up teenagers and weren’t trying to hide their feelings.

“They were practically sitting on top of each other in the booth of the nightclub and were laughing with each other.

“As the night progressed, he seemed to be growing in confidence and put his arm around her and gave her a hug.

“Then he decided to put his hand around the back of Kate’s neck and pulled her across him, where they started to passionately kiss.”

Jack split from long-term girlfriend Gemma Chan, 35, star of Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, last December, after six years together.

Kate’s 12-year marriage to American film director Len Wiseman, 45, ended in 2016 after he filed for divorce.

She shares 19-year-old daughter Lily with her former husband, the actor Michael Sheen, 49, who she split from in 2003.

Patti Smith details her wild, artsy, broke days with Robert Mapplethorpe in revised book

The myth of the starving artist is no myth.

The Mooch Threw Himself a Party Celebrating Trump and Their 11 Days Together

Alex Brook Lynn/The Daily Beast

It was quite the scene Monday night at Anthony Scaramucci’s Hunt & Fish Club in Times Square, where he’d invited the faithful to celebrate him and his book glorifying President Trump and his own 11—not 10!—days as White House communications director.

The guys who were there, and it was mostly guys, were the sort of guys who aren’t terrible guys or great guys and, you know, they used to be Democratic guys, or at least some of them. Queens son Andrew Cuomo might have felt at home. A lot of the bridge-and-tunnel people there, though, followed Trump, because Trump is kind of one of them.

The Scaramucci set is garish and fiercely familial and smart and somewhat anti-intellectual. Anthony even boasts in his book that there was hardly a book in his house growing up. He’s a working class Long Island kid who liked motorcycles and made a fortune. Nice suits and cigars, Yankees tickets, pretty wives, and the ability to take care of your 85-year-old mother, who, by the way, was at the party. To some extent this is the dream Trump sells.
