‘The Walking Dead’ Time Jump: Show Versus Comic Books

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 6, called “Who Are You Now?”. Proceed at your own risk.

We’re living in a Rick-less world now in The Walking Dead, and this week’s episode went a long way toward filling the gaping void left by Grimes Sr’s departure. It introduced five new survivors – Magna, Luke, Connie, Kelly, and Yumiko – and showed us how Alexandria and The Kingdom have fared after a staggering six-year time jump. Interestingly, at around this point in the comics, there was a significant leap forward in the timeline as well.

The comic’s “new beginning” was significantly less dramatic, however. A less impactful two-year time jump, it meant Judith was still young; she’s now old enough and resourceful enough to go on fighting the fight in her dad’s absence. In the comic books at this point, Rick and Carl were still around. In fact, a lot of the early storylines following the skip forward in time revolved around Carl getting older and wanting to strike out on his own. The show and the comic books have separated themselves time and time again, and here it’s no different. These are the major differences between the series and the comic books after the time jump following the war with Negan.

Henry Is The New Carl

Henry.

When Carl was killed, a lot of fans were asking how some of the upcoming stories would be handled. They were arguably moments that made Carl more interesting than he had been in years. Well, it looks like Carol and Ezekiel’s adopted son Henry will become a stand-in for Carl in some of Grimes Jr’s comic-book storylines. This week’s episode saw Henry and Carol set out to deliver goods for the upcoming festival. This mirrors a similar Rick-less trip Carl took to the Hilltop where he soon moved to so he could train to be a blacksmith.

It’ll be interesting to see how far Henry’s story will follow Carl’s. One of the most memorable parts of the jump in the comic books was seeing Carl go through puberty and navigate interactions with girls while living in the apocalypse.

The Saviors Are Gone

We saw this tension play out through the first five episodes of the season, but in the comic books Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Saviors were in a slightly better place. Rick was in charge of Alexandria, Maggie was at Hilltop, and Dwight was in charge of the remaining Saviors. Things were still tense between everyone, but for the most part, the communities were all thriving.

In the show, it’s just Alexandria and Hilltop – and even that relationship seems rocky at best. Not only are the Saviors not in the picture community-wise, it seems like Carol pretty much wipes what was left of them out after they hurt Henry and steal her wedding ring.

Ezekiel’s Love Life

Ezekiel and Carol
Ezekiel and Carol.

Developments in Ezekiel’s love life take a big leap forward in this week’s episode. It transpires that he and Carol tied the knot at some point between when we first saw Ezekiel bring it up outside D.C. early this season and now.

In the comic books, the time jump reveals that Ezekiel was actually in a relationship with Michonne – who had become a pseudo-pirate in the two years since the war. Of course, in the comic books, Michonne never had a romantic relationship with Rick. Michonne’s role was filled by Andrea in the comic books, who lasted significantly longer than the Andrea of the TV series.

Connie

Connie is a member of Magna’s group that Judith saves and brings to Alexandria. The difference between her character in the show and the comic books is that in the show, she’s deaf and uses American Sign Language to communicate with her group. Her TV version is the first deaf character to be featured in both The Walking Dead and spin-off Fear the Walking Dead.

Gabriel and Rosita?!

Eugene’s had a very obvious thing for Rosita since we met him. And Rosita has always had a soft spot for Eugene. That’s been the case in both the comic books and the show. Some thought that, eventually, things might develop further for Eugene and Rosita. Well, in the comic books, after the time jump, they do. The oddly matched pair wind up together, despite some rockiness in their relationship.

TV Eugene just can’t catch a break, however — because Rosita is now with Gabriel. This pairing might not make a ton of sense, but a lot can happen in six years. It’s clear Eugene still harbors feelings for his longtime traveling companion, so who knows how things might pan out as the series progresses?

Hilltop Under New Management

One of the least publicized parts of last week’s episode was that it wasn’t just Rick’s last episode of the season, but also Maggie’s. Not only is that a fairly abrupt departure – though she’s much more likely to pop up in the show again than Rick – particularly since Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie, appears to have been given a leave of absence to shoot her new show Whiskey Cavalier — but it really changes up the dynamic of Hilltop.

Where Maggie was still in charge of the community in the comic books, someone else has the reins in the show now. Jesus seems like the obvious choice, but is that too easy? Also, Hilltop and Alexandria seem to be in a rocky place themselves. It’ll be interesting to see where all that started, and how many months or years Maggie hung around before she took off. Expect some answers going forward.

Negan and Judith

Judith alone is probably the biggest left-turn the series has made in a while. And although Henry seems to be filling in for Carl’s comic storylines in some places, it seems Judith is taking over in others.

The comics revealed Negan was still alive and in prison after the war because Carl spent a lot of his time talking with the man in his cell. The two had a weird bond during the war and that continued in the years after it. Apparently, that bond was passed to Carl’s sister.

The show revealed Judith hanging out by Negan’s cell, having her dad’s former enemy help her with math homework. The two have a clear rapport, and although it’s pretty creepy, it’s also kinda cute.

Michonne and Rick’s Kid

There’s nothing to compare this to in the comic books. Rick doesn’t have another kid after Judith – at least not yet. A lot of fans thought Michonne could be pregnant before Rick died and their guess was right on the money. Their offspring seems to be in line to take the place of a young Judith, as a child that the group rallies to protect.

What You Need to Know Before Starting ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’

Red Dead Redemption 2 — the epic follow-up to Rockstar’s 2010 Western masterpiece — is now available on PS4 and Xbox One.

Enjoying the scenery in Red Dead Redemption 2

The Setting

Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in 1899 — 12 years before Red Dead Redemption — with the Wild West all but tamed. The steam engine has revolutionized transportation, railroads carve harsh lines through what used to be wilderness, and while many don’t yet know it, the world sits on the precipice of change.

The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 features swampy bayous filled with hillbillies, snakes, and gators. There are rolling green hills, luscious flat countryside, and snowy mountains to trek over. Cities and towns of all sizes freckle the land, many connected by rail. It’s massive in size: There are more than 1,000 things to do and discover, and NPCs sport half a million lines of dialog — more than twice the amount featured in Grand Theft Auto 5. And it’s made bigger still thanks to the technology of the setting. There are no Hydra Jets or Ocelot Pariahs in the Wild West: instead of thousands of horsepower, you’re traveling at just one.

Rockstar makes the most of this, filling every inch of the map with things to see and do — be it wildlife, other travelers, or landmarks.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The Characters

In Red Dead Redemption 2 you’ll play as Arthur Morgan, an enforcer in Dutch van der Linde’s gang. A no-nonsense kind of guy, Arthur has been a member of the gang since he was a young boy, and his upbringing as an outlaw shows.

The Van der Linde Gang is an anarchic collection of misfit wayfarers — that is to say, a bunch of scoundrels — and you’re a key member of the group. Dutch handles the strategy: He decides where you and the crew will find your next big score. That means train robberies, bank heists, assaulting other gang hideouts, and more — and as one of the best shooters in the gang, you’ll be front-and-center.

Your time is mostly your own though. You can play poker or blackjack, either at the camp or in one of the saloons in the many towns. You can tame wild horses, get into brawls, fish in the rivers, and hunt down wildlife.

If you’re looking to help the Camp out, you can lean on debtors for a loan shark friend or scramble up herbs for your friendly doctor. You don’t have to do these things, but if you do the Camp will grow as you improve it, and you’ll get access to better medicines, fast travel points, and more as you go.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The Combat (or Lack Thereof)

Rockstar is revolutionizing the way we interact with games in Red Dead Redemption 2. If you accidentally antagonize someone, sure, you could draw your revolver and shoot them dead. You’re the notorious outlaw Arthur Morgan, after all. But you’ll get a bounty on your head, and you’ll have to dodge the sheriffs until you get rid of it.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, if you keep that weapon holstered and interact with the person you’ve upset, you’ll be able to try to talk your way out of the situation.

It’s part of the revolutionary new interaction. You use it to bond with your horse, to butter up shopkeeps around the world, to pat dogs, and to start fistfights with men who look at you funny. Instead of primarily interacting via the shooting of a gun, the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 feels more alive because you interact with it in a more natural way.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The Honor System

Those interactions you have influence another new system in Red Dead Redemption 2: Honor. The actions you take will be reflected in the way people react to Arthur in the game world. Do honorable things, and people will be quicker to give Arthur the benefit of the doubt. He’ll get more offers for bounty hunting jobs, allowing him to make legal cash easier.

Act dishonorably, and things will be a bit rougher on Arthur — in law-abiding towns, anyway. People will steer clear of you, and deputies might be quicker on the draw. Outside of civilization though, robberies will pay more, witnesses will be easier to intimidate and the cinematic killshots will be more intense. Balancing Honor will play a large role in your time with the game, and will influence many of your decisions as you play.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar’s most ambitious game yet. It’s more in-depth, more intimate and more immersive than any game they’ve ever done. It’s out now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Catching the Hidden Serial Killer in ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’

There’s a serial killer on the loose in Red Dead Redemption 2. You may have seen his “works of art” close to Valentine. The game won’t point you in the right direction here. You’ll have to find him and catch him yourself. But he does have one weakness.

Like most pop culture serial killers, this one is just begging to be caught. But it’ll take the right detective to figure out the clues. He wants his genius to be understood — but of course, that’ll be his downfall.

Each victim the RDR2 serial killer leaves out in the world has a clue nearby. Usually shoved inside a facial orifice, but not always the same one — it’s a surprise each time!

Much like the first mysterious shack, RDR2’s first serial killer victim is quite close to one of the starting areas, designed to pique your interest so you keep an Eagle Eye out for more…

As Gory As RDR2 Gets

The first of these clues is on the ride from Horseshoe Overlook to Valentine. Many players will stumble on it in their early game back-and-forth. If you load up the map nearby, a simple marker named “corpse” can be seen.

Find the first clue from the serial killer here, southeast of Valentine.

Travelling below the train tracks will reveal the body, or what’s left of it. If you find the severed head, you’ll get the clue: one third of a map that leads to… something.

Serial killer clue Valentine railroad tracks Horseshoe Overlook RDR2
Postmodern expressionism, the artist clearly feels shackled and… dismembered.

But unlike most quests, there’s nothing to signpost where the next steps are. This is one of the rare mysteries in RDR2 that you either find yourself, or you miss.

Humans Don’t Have That Many Organs

Not too far away, in the land of the Braithwaites, there’s a corpse on the edge of the plantation property. There are actually so many body parts scattered around, we think more than one killing has taken place to signal this clue. There’s also a lot of blood, providing a trail to follow.

Serial killer clue two Braithwaite Manor RDR2
Eagle Eye helps, but you can follow the trail of blood.

True to form, there’s a disembodied head nearby, with a scroll stuffed into a novelty face-hole. It’s the second third of the map. Here’s where to find it from Braithwaite Manor:

Serial killer second clue RDR2 Braithwaite Manor map
Just a little bit southeast of Braithwaite Manor is where you can find the second serial killer clue.

But we still need the third piece…

Third Crime’s a Charm

Back towards Valentine, if you go southwest and a bit south of Wallace Station, you’ll come across the third clue deep into the woods.

Serial killer third clue map Wallace Station
Find the third clue here, where the serial killer has left another morbid present.

Follow the same formula, and use your Eagle Eye if you get lost.

Serial killer clue three RDR2
We see. And we cannot unsee.

Once your map is fully put together, it’ll look like this:

Serial killer full map RDR2
On the back of the full serial killer map are the words CAN YOU FIND ME.

This just so happens to look like a run down shack that’s quite close to Valentine. Once you’re there, you can open up the basement to find the serial killer’s dwelling. There also appears to be a safe combination, but Arthur will use that to open the serial killer’s locked door.

Finding the RDR2 Serial Killer

Investigate the serial killer’s hideout, and in the very back there’ll be a knife you can inspect. Doing so will trigger a cutscene in which the serial killer will attack you.

He’s not too hard to fight off, and you can hogtie him and take him back to the sheriff’s office in Valentine to collect your reward.

Trust a serial killer to get all weird, and when the sheriff tries to put him into his cell, he goes full Hannibal and tries to take a bite out of the sheriff’s neck. You’d almost think it was the vampire quest… but more on that one later.

Dead Eye makes it pretty easy to pop the serial killer in the head and save the sheriff. He’ll reward you for your trouble with a stack of bills. It’s not as much as you get from robbing a train, but at least the people of Valentine are a little safer now — until you next decide to rob them.

Why Is Our Culture So Obsessed With Dead White Girls?

Peter Dazeley/Getty

“Why does Jenny have to die?”

My high school offered a course in film, for one semester. One of the first movies we watched in that class was Forrest Gump. Our teacher raised concerning questions about the way the women in the film were depicted, in particular, the character of Jenny, Forrest’s only childhood friend, a victim of child molestation at the hands of her father, later a drug user, eventually dead by AIDS.

Dumbfounded, I searched my adolescent brain for an answer. Because it manipulates the audience into feeling more for Forrest? It makes her life a tragedy? Jenny sets out to live an independent life and she is punished for it, my teacher offered. Somewhere, in the back of my brain, a door opened. Today, it’s easy to recognize Jenny as a dead girl, the subject of Alice Bolin’s new book: Dead Girls: Essays on Surviving an American Obsession.

Steven Yeun Is Ready to Seduce You: The ‘Walking Dead’ Star on His Award-Worthy Turn in ‘Burning’

Taylor Jewell/Invision/AP

Steven Yeun jolts onscreen in Lee Chang-dong’s slow-burn mystery thriller Burning like a bolt of lightning: unexpectedly and impossible to look away from.

He is the debonair, impassive cipher Ben, a man of mysterious wealth and murkier motives—a modern-day Jay Gatsby, as working-class aspiring writer (and Ben’s frustrated romantic rival) Jong-su (Yoo Ah-in) scoffs resentfully. In Lee’s simmering, South Korea-set adaptation of the 1983 Haruki Murakami short story “Barn Burning,” Ben cuts a figure of stark, faintly malevolent glamour: the chic black Porsche to Jong-su’s run-down white pick-up truck. Understated class tensions boil over into paranoia and obsession. And Yeun plays the villain with effortless leading-man charisma.

The South Korean-born, American-raised Yeun—best known for his six-year stint as Glenn Rhee on The Walking Dead—easily commands the screen as Ben, rendering casual slouches magnetically aloof; politely-stifled yawns into inscrutable power plays. The actor calls it “beautiful and powerful” to inhabit Ben’s void, “to feel what it feels like to just be there watching, and really letting things wash over you,” he tells The Daily Beast.

What to Know (and Do) Starting ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’

It’s time to properly get into the meat of Red Dead Redemption 2, and we all have many glorious gunslinging hours ahead of us. We want to make sure you get off to the best start possible.

Thankfully, much of Red Dead Redemption 2 is explained very well. It’s not like you’re excessively having your hand held, but there’s enough polish to the game that helpful messages pop up at the right times, and Rockstar has made it impossible to dig yourself into a hole you can’t get out of.

That said, there are a few things we were stressing over that we probably didn’t need to.

A horse rears up on its hind legs with a rider on top in Red Dead Redemption 2.
The rearing technique is learned at tier 2 of bonding with your horse.

Any Gun or Horse Will Do

There’s been a lot of hype about the weapon systems, and taking care of your horse. We’ve written about it, and the hype is warranted — these are very cool parts of the game. But they’re also more optional than perhaps you were led to believe.

The default autoaim (which can be turned off) is so strong, we found it didn’t really matter which gun we used. Aim with Left Trigger and the reticle will centre on your enemy’s chest. Adjust for a headshot if you like, and pull Right Trigger to fire the shot.

A horserider stands near a tall tree.
There's no lack of expansive scenery to go horseriding in.

Similarly, we went through the game with what we’re sure is a “weak” horse with unexciting stats. We never had a problem. We still won races, and hauled carcasses after hunting. Bonding happens naturally with time in the saddle, and there’s plenty of that when going from A to B.

There’s a deep side of the game for anyone who wants to take care of their horse, and customise their weapons. But just be aware this is something to do if you want to. It simply won’t make much of a difference if you use a different horse or gun, so use your favourite and customise the hell out of it.

Sure, a sawed-off shotgun will perform better in short range engagements than a sniper. But for most middling firefights? Use whatever you like.

Decisions Come in Many Forms

Much of the time in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’re making decisions without even knowing it. Even when you do know it, it’s hard to know the import of those decisions at the time.

That’s because games usually give you challenges with a fail state and a win state. Many of RDR2‘s activities have neither — rather, just different story branches.

Take this spoiler-free example from a mission in which you get Lenny drunk to take his mind off some things. Eventually you’re intoxicated enough to run from the police. If you’re caught, it seems like you were meant to be caught. If you get away, it seems like getting caught would have resulted in a fail state.

In reality, both are just different story branches which see you wake up in a different spot. Though admittedly, waking up in jail is worse. But the drunkard who gave you a hard time earlier in the night? Depending on what you chose to do with him, the night could’ve taken a much darker turn. You might’ve been okay with that, but would Lenny? Especially given his state of mind?

You may have to look for the fast travel map again when you move camp.

Fast Travel in RDR2

It’s not exactly hidden, but it’s not exactly signposted either. Red Dead Redemption 2 has a fast travel option, but you’ll almost always have to pay (in-game money) to use it.

There’s a fast travel ability from your camp to anywhere you’ve visited before, or there are stagecoaches in each town that can take you to previously reached locations. Just make sure you don’t have a bounty on your head if you want to use a taxi coach.

Read our fast travel guide to learn how to unlock the option at your camp.

Blue shack at Lenora View Red Dead Redemption 2
This blue house at Lenora View has a sad story to tell.

Not All Stories Are Told Through Words

Not all stories are told through missions, either. Some of the coolest things you’ll come across in Rockstar’s wild west are somewhat off the grid.

These intentionally unexplained elements of the game range from mysterious cabins, a serial killer’s bodies to find, hunting legendary animals and fish, and… well, hunting in general. The game doesn’t explain that very well.

The serial killer’s first victim is quite close to Valentine, and will just appear as “corpse” on the map. We recommend checking that out, as well as the first shack at Hani’s Bethel for an example of Rockstar’s environmental storytelling at work.

Just beware that if you’re on a mission, sometimes going a little too far will force you to restart from a checkpoint. But otherwise, ride free once in a while. It’s a little too easy to rely on that map. Get lost and find yourself at a new town far away, and ride the stagecoach back.

Bandana character draws bow and arrow in RDR2.
The bow and arrow is good for stealth, but also clean hunting kills.

Hunt Smarter, Not Harder

Running out and using whatever weapon/ammo you want when hunting is fine for food, but not for pelts. You can sell poor and good quality pelts, but for crafting, only perfect pelts will do.

That means paying attention to the factors that will damage the pelt. Some ammo and weapons are meant for small game like rabbits, for example. The place your shot hits matters too.

You can get close to an animal and press RB or L2 to study the animal and get valuable hunting information. This includes what kind of weapon and ammo to use. Even if you’re chasing down an animal and holding RB/L2 while close to it, it’s worth it. This was the largest factor for us in getting perfect pelts.

Stay tuned for a more in-depth hunting guide here on FANDOM which will cover things like poison arrows, weak spots, and legendary animals.

Arthur Morgan Red Dead Redemption 2
Having blood and dirt on your clothes doesn't help with the town's opinion of you.

Change Your Appearance

Using your mask when performing dastardly deeds does help, but it’s not a cure-all. Townsfolk will still put two and two together, sometimes even if they didn’t see the crime.

Another thing you can do is change your clothes and facial appearance whenever you can. Let them gossip all they like about the “man in the blue shirt who caused a ruckus” as you walk around town in your new coat. And yes, the AI really does work like that.

‘The Walking Dead’ Begins to Say Goodbye to Rick

After the gob smacking announcement that Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is down to his final two episodes on The Walking Dead, fans everywhere were left wondering: how does he go out? Eaten by zombies? Murdered by dissidents? Traded away to the mysterious folks in that eternally-hovering helicopter?

This week, on an episode titled “The Obliged,” we got approximately zero answers about all that — unless you count a cliffhanger that eliminates one possibility from the mix for sure. (True story: if you leave your hero facing imminent death in the final moments of one episode, the next episode has to feature him making a wildly improbable escape. Sorry, we don’t make the rules.) Here’s everything that happened as The Walking Dead prepares to say goodbye to its longtime hero.

Michonne’s on Deck
Community organizer by day, zombie slayer by night! Michonne (Danai Gurira) spent this episode reminding us that if Rick happened to not be around anymore, she’s got it under control. She even ran interference with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who was refusing to eat unless someone came down to sit and talk with him. The conversation turned tense when Negan started asking about Michonne’s son and spouted one of those Bond-villain-esque lines he’s gotten so fond of during his incarceration: “We’re the same, and you can’t stand that we’re the same.”

Michonne
Danai Gurira as Michonne – The Walking Dead _ Season 9, Episode 4 Gene Page/AMC

But Michonne saw through it, to Negan’s true (and pathetic) goal: All he wanted, the thing he was just desperate for, was to see his stupid murder bat again. Michonne gave him the bad news: the bat was long gone. And the last time we saw the Saviors’ fearless leader, he was banging his head violently against the wall out of heartbreak for old, lost Lucille.

The End of Junkyard Jadis

Things weren’t looking good for Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) when he first woke up after being knocked unconscious last episode by Jadis (Pollyanna Macintosh). Tied up and faced with his imminent death in the form of an armless, pearl necklace-wearing zombie wielded by his erstwhile girlfriend, Gabriel prepared to be bitten. But his last words — “I forgive you” — seemed to give Jadis second thoughts. So instead of killing him, she chloroformed him and vanished. Waking up with a goodbye note pinned to his jacket, Gabriel found himself abandoned amidst the garbage. Presumably, he’ll head back to Alexandria whenever he finishes ugly crying.

Mutiny

She’s been wanting to do it for ages, but now, the moment has arrived: Maggie (Lauren Cohan) left for Alexandria with the goal of killing Negan. Rick got word that she was coming and tried to leave the bridge camp to intercept her, but Daryl (Norman Reedus), in cahoots with Maggie, took him the wrong way home. A shoving match ensued, leading the men to fall down a hill and into a hole — where they had no choice but to work out their differences, particularly after the hole attracted a crowd of zombies. Back on the road, Rick sent Daryl to intercept Maggie while he took a conveniently-placed horse (an escapee from a riot at the bridge camp) and tried to draw the ravenous herd away. But when a second herd showed up, merging with the first, Rick’s horse freaked out and threw him… right onto a busted concrete slab with a bunch of rebar sticking out of it.

As Andrew Lincoln’s penultimate episode drew to a close, this is where we left our hero: barely conscious, surrounded by walkers, and fully (if not mortally) impaled on a metal pike from which he definitely can’t escape without help. But this ignominious, lonely end can’t possibly be how Rick Grimes dies … can it?

The Walking Dead airs on AMC Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.

‘Several’ People Dead After Active Shooter Shouts ‘All Jews Need to Die’ and Opens Fire at Pittsburgh Synagogue

Eight people are reportedly dead after a lone shooter shouting anti-Semitic phrases opened fire Saturday morning in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

via NYDN:

“All Jews must die!” the gunman shouted before opening fire on dozens of congregants inside the Tree of Life synagogue, according to KDKA-TV.

Police confirmed multiple casualties at the house of worship in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood, and ordered local residents to stay inside. KDKA-TV reported the eight fatalities, with authorities confirming at least a dozen people were shot — including three police officers.

The suspect, wounded and crawling, gave himself up after a gunfight with cops who were forced to crouch behind their police cars for protection during a wild shootout, the television station reported.

“My stomach is churning,” said lawyer Jeffrey Pollock, 56, who lives four doors down from the synagogue. “I went to get my mail … and saw about a dozen police cars with their lights on.”

He said there was a weekly Shabbat service on the synagogue’s main floor and a bris scheduled for the basement. The mother of one girl attending the services told CNN that worshippers fled to the basement for sanctuary as the gunshots continued on the floor upstairs.

“I’m just sad,” said Jeff Finklestein , president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. “I really don’t know what to tell you. My heart goes out to all these families. This should not be happening, period. This should not be happening in a synagogue.”

He estimated the service held as many as 60 worshippers on a typical Saturday.

Sabbath services at the “traditional, progressive and egalitarian” synagogue were scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. Cops quickly flooded the chaotic area around the house of worship, with ambulances seen lining up on the surrounding streets.

President Trump weighed in on the latest mass shooting via Twitter, making a political point in addition to sending his condolences.

“Watching the details from the shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue,” said Trump. “Many will tweet today that we need gun control but as always this not the day to do so. We must offer thoughts and prayers and talk about that another day. Believe me.”

The NYPD quickly began deploying heavy weapons teams, including the officers from the Critical Response Command and the Strategic Response Team, to houses of worship across the city. Sector cars will also make additional visits to the religious outlets.

The killings came after a year where the Anti-Defamation League reported a record 57% uptick in anti-Semitic incidents nationwide.

It has been a wild week. Don’t let the madness deter you from getting out to vote in these midterm elections.

10 Things We’ve Learned Watching ‘The Walking Dead’

If there’s one thing that fans of The Walking Dead are sure of, it’s that they’re much more prepared for the inevitable apocalypse than most of the rest of us. After all, they’ve been watching the whole thing unfold for almost a decade now, and what’s more, their guides through the zombie-laden landscape of the near future have been none other than stalwart survivalists Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira), and many more. What lessons have these dedicated warriors of the wasteland taught us in nine seasons of zombie hordes and merciless marauders? Here are ten tips to survive the zombie apocalypse!

Don’t Go It Alone

There’s just no way that you’re going to make it through the horde all on your lonesome. You need friends – or at least allies – if you’re going to build a stable survival group and see this apocalypse through. Find people with varied skills that complement your own, but remember another important lesson while you’re bonding with your new and strangely still very clean buddies…

Trust No One

Yes, I know that I just said you need other people, and that’s true: The “Lone Wolf” routine won’t get you very far. But never forget the zombie genre’s most significant ongoing theme – the real monsters aren’t the Walkers, but the living people standing next to you. Work with them, fight alongside them…but never trust them. And be ready to take them out at a moment’s notice.

Never Camped Before? You’re in Trouble

Walking Dead Season 7

If you’re not an outdoorsy type, at least a couple of those tentative comrades should be campers. The world has ended, civilization has collapsed, and the power grid went down with it. It’s time to go back to the way it was in the olden times, with fire and tents and catching wild animals for dinner. If you can’t hack that, you’re going to be zombie grub very soon.

Startled? Stay Alert!

It’s like they know. The moment you’re startled by a loud sound or a sudden movement of long-standing debris, and then breathe a sigh of relief and let your guard down? That’s when the Walkers attack, and they’ll just be there, right at your side as if they teleported next to you. Never let your guard down. Keep your eye on your fellow survivors, but watch out for the zombies and marauders too.

Zombies Are Everywhere

I’m not kidding. Never stop being nervous. Not only are Walkers lurking in every shadow, and around every corner, but so are awful and occasionally cannibalistic tribes of other survivors. And all these people have the preternatural ability to make no sound at all until they’re right on top of you. It’s almost like you’re in a TV show designed to scare an audience with unrealistically staged suspense sequences. Hmm…

In Most Cases, Guns Are Better

The Walking Dead

You really have to know how to use a gun; if you don’t, they’re just dangerous to yourself and your fellow survivors, as well as unreliable, inaccurate, and noisy. Knives, swords, bats, clubs – all these and more will never let you down. But you’ll have to get a lot closer to use them, so they come with their own hazards. Basically, you’re going to have to be a close-quarters fighter or stay close to someone that is.

Oh, You Think That Place Is Secure?

Your perfect refuge is only as safe as your weakest link. A cluster of tents, prison, walled community – it really makes no difference. You can have everything figured out, every entrance sealed or guarded, and a well-cleared landscape beyond. Someone is going to screw it up for you, and when that happens, the horde will pour in, even if you didn’t even see them nearby minutes ago (refer back to ZOMBIES ARE EVERYWHERE).

Map Out Your Escape Plan

So that worthless weasel in your group that you never did trust just let the zombies in, or gave away your location to the evil group down the road. It’s time to head out, but don’t let this great fortress you’ve built turn into your inescapable tomb. Always have an escape plan, drawn-out routes, roles for everyone to play, and packed “bug out” bags for the quick disappearing act.

You Will Be Bitten

the walking dead feature

Just accept it. After all these lessons and all this preparation, survival is only a game of delaying tactics. Rick Grimes himself is going down; no one makes it out of the apocalypse alive. It’s going to happen when you least expect it, so just brace yourself for the inevitable feeling of rotting teeth sinking into your flesh. Contemplate it a little bit every day so you can face it with quiet dignity and grace; consider it your moment of Zen.

Be Prepared to Die

the walking dead carl dead

It’s best not to have to struggle with this one when the time comes, especially if you want to spare the feelings of anyone that’s been foolish enough to imprint on you emotionally in the End Times. So now that you’re on the way out, you should already have decided if you want to transition into undead uncertainty or clock out with a definitive brain-smashing blow or bullet. Hey, maybe you want to see how the other half “lives.”

‘The Walking Dead’ – Who Will Die in Season 9?

We’re entering the ninth season of The Walking Dead, and if anything is certain in a zombie apocalypse, it’s that no one is safe. That’s right, nobody – not even the series’ star since day one, Andrew Lincoln, whose departure early this season has already been reported.

On The Walking Dead death is not only certain and often sudden, but also a major element of the show’s entertainment/shock value. And of course we’re all wondering just who might be in the crosshairs — or a walker’s teeth — this season. We’ve taken a look at the show’s biggest characters and calculated just how likely it is that they’ll die this season on The Walking Dead.

Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon

Daryl

1% CHANCE DARYL DIES IN SEASON 9

Now we know we said no one is ever safe on this show, but if there’s one man that is, it’s him. And now that Rick is going to be out of the picture, Daryl will surely have to take up the mantle of a lead hero in the dawning days of a new era. Then again, there are other choices among the dwindling early survivors, like the next two on this list.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan

Negan

10% CHANCE NEGAN DIES IN SEASON 9

Love him or hate him, Negan certainly shook things up when he first arrived on the scene a couple years ago, and although his fortunes have changed considerably since his days of cracking skulls and speechifying, his presence is still a galvanizing one for many other post-apocalyptic survivors. We think he’ll stick around.

Danai Gurira as Michonne

Michonne

14% CHANCE MICHONNE DIES IN SEASON 9

She’s been a de facto member of the leadership for quite a while, and one of the show’s (and comic’s) most iconic and beloved characters. Although she’s also found fame via Marvel’s Black Panther, we suspect Gurira isn’t going to head off into the apocalyptic sunset just yet.

Lauren Cohan as Maggie

Maggie

25% CHANCE MAGGIE DIES IN SEASON 9

Although she’s not leaving for good, and new series showrunner Angela Kang has expressed interest in wrapping up Maggie’s story in Season Ten, Cohan will be absent for most of this season due to other commitments, so there are still some question marks about her possible fate.

Josh McDermitt as Dr. Eugene Porter

Eugene

30% CHANCE EUGENE DIES IN SEASON 9

Honestly, how is this guy still kicking? A liar from the outset, Eugene eventually demonstrated his worth as a man of expertise, and later had his moments of redemption, so he’s not the man he was when we first met him. He’s also been quite adept at dodging bullets both metaphorical and literal in the past, but how long will that luck hold up?

Melissa McBride as Carol Peletier

Carol

40% CHANCE CAROL DIES IN SEASON 9

Carol has always been one of the strongest and most determined survivors on the show, and although in the past it could be argued that killing her off would send the wrong message, a well-handled departure for McBride could also play as a poignant and powerful tribute in this year of all years.

Christian Serratos as Rosita Espinosa

Rosita

45% CHANCE ROSITA DIES IN SEASON 9

People are not defined by who they’re with, this is true, but in the shorthand of storytelling, they sadly often are. With Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) And Spencer (Austin Nichols) both gone, Rosita has an opportunity to establish herself as her own person in the post-apocalypse…but will she get the chance?

Seth Gilliam as Father Gabriel Stokes

Gabriel

65% CHANCE GABRIEL DIES IN SEASON 9

He should have died almost immediately, to be honest, but somehow he managed to make it. But when someone seems like an easy choice for an early Walking Dead death, and then survives beyond that, alarm bells should be ringing…or perhaps moaning. Gabriel’s day may be arriving sooner than he thinks, but he may not see it coming.

Alanna Masterson as Tara Chambler

Tara

75% CHANCE TARA DIES IN SEASON 9

As one of the characters that has stuck around long enough now to feel like one of the team, Tara has nevertheless also managed to fly under the radar when it comes to lists like this one, so we’re thinking this season might just be time for a Tara-ble death (we’re so sorry).

Ross Marquand as Aaron

Aaron

90% CHANCE AARON DIES IN SEASON 9

Every year there are characters on this show where you can’t necessarily explain why you feel they’re heading to a “Come to Walkers” moment, but you just know in your bones that they are. Could this be Aaron’s year? The Magic Zombie Ball says “Signs point to yes.”

Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes

Rick

95% CHANCE RICK DIES IN SEASON 9

This one’s a gimme, since we know Lincoln is leaving, but there are stories that he’s sticking around to shadow directors and pick up some tips in order to return to the show behind the camera… unless that’s all a trick, in which case we’ll leave some wiggle room.

‘The Bachelor’ Alum Cristy Caserta Dead at 38

Bachelor Nation is in mourning. The Bachelor alum Cristy Caserta died on Thursday, October 4, Us Weekly confirms. She was 38.

The Sunrise Police Department in Florida tells Us that the attorney suffered an apparent seizure while attending a training class at a local school. “The students around her noticed her coffee fell to the ground and thought maybe she fell asleep, but she was unresponsive when they approached her,” Officer Fernandez says. “They called 911, and Fire Rescue showed up and started CPR and she was still unresponsive.”

Caserta was transferred to the nearby Westside Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 8:59 a.m. An autopsy will be performed at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 5, to determine the official cause of death.

Stephen Carbone, the blogger behind the Bachelor fan site Reality Steve, paid tribute to Caserta on Twitter on Thursday evening. “Sick to my stomach to see that Cristy Caserta from Brad Womack’s 2nd season has suddenly passed away,” he tweeted. “Cristy was always there to give me legal advice in the past. Fear the Walking Dead: Season 4 Finale Review

Warning: Full spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead’s Season 4 finale follow…

Fear the Walking Dead’s Season 4 finale had one job, basically. Regardless of who lived or died, of who survived to see the adventures ahead (spoiler: it was freakin’ everyone), none of these folks could ever step foot in Alexandria.

I know, I know. That’s crazy, right? This whole half season’s been solely about Morgan collecting his new compadres (even meeting some new ones) and taking them all to his friend Rick. To house them in a safe environment. To show them the king he’s always talking about. The king who – er – used to have a tiger. It’s been his directive from the get-go.

Now all of that had to unravel in 50 minutes. Or 80 minutes including commercials. Or really, the final five minutes because that’s how quickly the show had Morgan ditch his entire plan. Because The Walking Dead’s about to hit us with an eighteen month time jump. Yup, just as Fear caught up to Walking Dead, the original show’s like “Smell ya later!” and is skipping ahead a year and a half.
