Dance Theater Of Harlem Founder Arthur Mitchell Is Dead At 84

(AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews, File)

NEW YORK (AP) — Arthur Mitchell, who broke barriers for African-Americans in the 1950s as a ballet dancer with the New York City Ballet and who would go on to become a driving force in the creation of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, has died. He was 84.

Instagram Photo
Mitchell died Wednesday at a New York City hospital according to his niece, Juli Mills-Ross. She said the death came after renal failure led to heart failure.

Born in Harlem, Mitchell started dancing with the New York City Ballet in 1955 under famed choreographer George Balanchine.

Balanchine put him in several leading roles, including one pairing him with a white female dancer in “Agon” in 1957.

In a January interview with The New York Times, Mitchell recalled the daring of that choice.

“Can you imagine the audacity to take an African-American and Diana Adams, the essence and purity of Caucasian dance, and to put them together on the stage?” he said.

In 1968, impacted by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Mitchell started a dance school that grew the next year to include the Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Anna Glass, the executive director of the Dance Theater, told The Associated Press that Mitchell “truly was a visionary.”

“He believed in a world where all people could have access to this beautiful art form,” she said. “He really sought to ensure that all people saw themselves in” ballet.

Among those recognizing his impact following his death was Misty Copeland, the first African-American female principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote, “You gave me so much, through our conversations, your dancing and by simply existing as a brown body in ballet. But you were so much more than a brown body. You’re an icon and hero.”

Instagram Photo
Choreographer and television producer Debbie Allen tweeted, “The world has lost another visionary” with Mitchell’s death.

“Arthur Mitchell claimed ballet as an American art form,” she said. “His legacy lives through all of us.”

Instagram Photo

Mitchell was born in 1934, and grew up with four siblings. He started formal dance training in high school, and upon graduating, took the offer of a ballet scholarship with the School of American Ballet, founded by Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein.

His dancing years also included choreographing his own works, performing on Broadway, and working with dance companies in other countries. The Dance Theatre of Harlem performed internationally and has been artistically acclaimed even as it went through some periods of financial upheaval. He stepped down as director almost a decade ago.

Glass said Mitchell had most recently spent time at the company last month, during a two-week residency in which he restaged one of his older ballets to be performed next April as the company marks its 50th anniversary.

“This was a moment that all of us were looking forward to,” Glass said. “I know we will miss him tremendously.”

SHOE DEAL UPDATE:

‘Dead Cells’ Review: Carefully Crafted Combat Meets Random Levels

While many games today seem to release and then (hopefully) get fixed later, Dead Cells has been functional and fun for so long that it’s almost as if developer Motion Twin forgot to hit the release button. Marrying gorgeous pixel art with skill-based combat and cleverly randomised levels, this is a dangerously replayable action game that you can gorge on in long stretches or just in 20 exhilarating minutes before work.

Take a deep breath, because we’re about to say the name of the genre. Dead Cells is the latest in the 2D pixel art metroidvania Soulslike roguelite action platformer to hit Steam. Video games, eh? It’s a subgenre of a sub-sub-subgenre that actually manages to define more than a few other games on the horizon. It turns out people just can’t get enough of that sweet, sweet, Soulsy combat.

Dead Cells player and enemy swing at each other

Still — seems like a contradiction, doesn’t it? How can a roguelite with randomly generated levels also be a metroidvania, a genre known for its meticulously crafted and explorable worlds?

The solution, like most of what Dead Cells offers, fees like a greatest hits of other games that’s somehow evolved into its own unique thing.

The Random Worlds of Dead Cells

Dead Cells achieves this by splitting everything up into different biomes. From The Sewers, to the Black Bridge, to the Clock Tower, these areas all have their own tilesets and enemies. The content within each is randomised every playthrough, but there are reliable constants. When you arrive at The Ramparts – a section of rooftops and towers patrolled by archers and mages – it’ll always be a lower level area with appropriately scaled gear.

As you’d expect from a roguelike, players have a degree of control over which biomes they visit. Once you’ve obtained the ability to climb vines, or use statues to teleport, or even wall climb, these permanent skills let you access the previously inaccessible. Find the shortcut, and these abilities effectively effectively let you skip a few biomes.

All of that spells more variety — though hell, even the repetition is fun in this game. Even going through areas we’ve beaten hundreds of times before, we didn’t get bored of them. It’s easy to lose yourself into that Soulslike flow when you’ve mastered an area and spend hours cutting through its enemies like so much butter.

Whether you’re exploring the new, or dominating the old, it’s just a different kind of fun. In Dead Cells, the latter becomes about beating each area quickly, as opposed to just beating them. Why? Because timed rewards are waiting for those who go from slow to flow.

Dead Cells randomised island game review
Every time we look at the island it seems different. Almost random…

Combat to Repeatedly Die For

We’re still playing this game a year after its Early Access launch, and that simply wouldn’t be the case if it didn’t rest on a rock solid combat system. Based on the “Souls roll,” hitting the dodge button here will grant you a second of invulnerability.

Each weapon has its own moveset but importantly, these carry different systems for critical attacks as well. It’s a unique system that gives each weapon an interesting playstyle and individual flavour.

Take the rapier for example, which crits after dodge rolls. Or the War Spear, which crits if it hits two enemies at the same time. The Twin Daggers crit on the third hit in their combo, and the Whip only crits on targets at the maximum thwack range.

Dead Cells early game boss fight
Did you just pull a Morpheus?

You may have noticed each of these has a nugget of risk/reward baked in. They also have different timings, such as a slightly longer attack animation on the Twin Daggers’ third strike. On top of this, all gear will come with randomised modifiers, which will be music to any Diablo fan’s ears.

Players will balance weapon moveset familiarity with stats and synergies, each respawn an opportunity for ad-hoc theorycrafting. It satisfies cravings for both action and strategy in each playthrough.

Perhaps you’re more comfortable with the Balanced Blade’s moveset, but that slower Oiled Sword might couple nicely with the Fire Grenade you just picked up? Every level has a series of interesting decisions for you to make while the clock is still ticking.

Floodgated Content

It’s also a game that has a surprising amount to do. There are new biomes and bosses waiting for you as you get further and further into the island, but it doesn’t stop there. Beyond the main game and its copious unlocks, the developers have been adding different ways to have fun.

For those who want to show off – or perhaps just need to catch a bus – Dead Cells is built from the ground up for speedrunning. Though “official” speedrunning rules would operate differently (Dead Cells pauses the timer in between levels while you upgrade), it’s neat being able to see how long each level has taken and each biome comes with a treasure room that can only be opened before a specific time.

Dead Cells start of game unlocks display
That is…a lot of unlocks.

There’s also the daily challenge, another randomised gauntlet with a unique scoring system. This mode incorporates how many enemies you can take out while also keeping an eye on the clock. Seeing yourself at the top of the daily leaderboards will require you to keep that kill combo speed buff going for as long as possible.

It’s hard to even talk about Dead Cells without sounding like a midnight shopping service – “but wait, there’s more!” – and just a few days ago Motion Twin threw a bunch more shiny new features onto the stack. Support was just added for modders which is always great for longevity, and expect Twitch streamers to be using fun gimmicks like requiring the chat to issue commands to open chests for them.

The Watcher boss in Dead Cells
Limbo as much as you want, I still see you.

Is Dead Cells Good?

We’ve seen Motion Twin add new bosses, levels, weapons, enemies, items, modifiers, and more over the last fourteen months. There’ve been redesigns, balance updates, and even a few less popular features removed outright to make sure the game flowed nicely.

It’s mainly a result of listening to its community — a practice that Motion Twin might be uniquely placed to do, given its novel structure in which every employee owns the same portion of the company. “Same pay, same say” for everyone, according to Motion Twin.

This is one of those titles we would’ve been happy with even at the start of its Early Access period. You could easily squeeze tens of hours from it back then, and over the course of fourteen months it’s just added more and more. Motion Twin could’ve flipped the “1.0” switch at any point to rapturous applause from its community.

Lucky you then, dear reader, if you haven’t yet dipped into this insta-classic. Dead Cells is an example of how to do things right in so many ways. How to do Early Access. How to listen to your community. How to take inspiration from games while growing into your own style. It also happens to be the best time to jump in and ride the content train that’s sure to keep rolling for a long time to come.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Charlotte Rae, who played a wise and patient housemother to a brood of teenage girls on the long-running sitcom “The Facts of Life” during a career that encompassed many other TV roles as well as stage and film appearances, has died. She was 92.

Instagram Photo

Rae died at her Los Angeles home Sunday, said her publicist, Harlan Boll. A cause of death was not immediately available, but Rae reportedly was diagnosed last year with bone cancer after beating pancreatic cancer.

She originated the character of Mrs. Garrett in 1978 during the first season of NBC’s comedy “Diff’rent Strokes,” then took Mrs. Garrett with her for the spinoff “Facts,” which premiered the following season. Initially set at a girls’ boarding school, that NBC series ran for nine seasons. Rae left after its seventh year, however, explaining later, “I needed some time for the rest of my life.”

She earned an Emmy nomination for the part, and was a two-time Tony nominee for her work on Broadway.

Edna Garrett provided kind if sometimes wry counsel to her charges (played by young co-stars including Kim Fields, Lisa Whelchel, Nancy McKeon and Molly Ringwald) on a series that was praised for dealing with such sensitive issues of teenhood as sex, drug use, eating disorders and peer pressure.

“I wanted to bring in as much humanity as possible, as well as the humor,” Rae told The Associated Press early in the show’s run. “I don’t want her to be Polly Perfect, because she must have human failings and make mistakes.”

Rae landed the role after years of theater and television performances.

Her last feature film credit was “Ricki and the Flash” with Meryl Streep in 2015. That same year she released her autobiography “The Facts of My Life,” co-written by her son Larry Strauss.

Born Charlotte Rae Lubotsky in Milwaukee, on April 22, 1926, she had studied drama at Northwestern University, then moved to New York where, despite early plans to be a “serious” actress, she quickly found work doing satirical sketches in Greenwich Village clubs.

It was there that Broadway producers, who frequented such bistros, discovered her, leading to her first Broadway musical, called “Three Wishes for Jamie,” in 1952. A few years later, she originated the role of Mammy Yokum in the Broadway musical “Li’l Abner.”

Rae made numerous TV appearances in 1950s drama anthologies including “The U.S. Steel Hour,” ”Playhouse 90″ and “Armstrong Circle Theater,” sharing the black-and-white screen with such actors as Zero Mostel, Art Carney and Gertrude Berg.

In 1961 she became a semi-regular on the New York-based cop sitcom “Car 54, Where Are You?” as the wife of the NYPD officer played by future “Munsters” grandpa Al Lewis.

She received Tony nominations in 1966 for “Pickwick” and in 1969 for “Morning, Noon and Night.”

In the early 1970s, Rae moved to Los Angeles with her then-husband, composer and music editor John Strauss, and their sons Andy and Larry. There she was cast in the short-lived Norman Lear sitcom “Hot L Baltimore” and a similarly unsuccessful variety show hosted by Rich Little before scoring “Diff’rent Strokes,” on which Mrs. Garrett was the family’s housekeeper.

After “Facts,” Rae stayed busy with film and stage appearances.

In 2005, at age 79, she appeared in a new comedy, “Leading Ladies,” at Ford’s Theater in Washington.

Subsequent credits include the 2008 comedy “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” and the 2012 thriller “Love Sick Love.”

In 2013, Rae went public with an account of why her marriage to Strauss had ended in the mid-1970s after a quarter-century. She said he confessed to her that he was gay and had being having an affair with another man. Strauss died in 2011.

She is survived by her son Larry Strauss, sister Miriam Guten and three grandchildren. Her other son Andy Strauss died in 1999. Rae was divorced from John Strauss after 25 years of marriage.

Services were pending, Boll said.

Mick Jagger Said He’d Rather ‘Be Dead’ Than Sing ‘Satisfaction’ at 45. Now He’s 75 and Still Playing It

The following feature is excerpted from LIFE The Rolling Stones: Their Rock ‘n’ Roll Life, available at retailers and on Amazon.

Of the many things that Mick Jagger has said in public—aside, that is, from the lyrical improvisations and the onstage declarations he has made across more than 2,000 live performances over 56 years—among the more enduring is this bit of bravura from 1975: “I’d rather be dead than sing ‘Satisfaction’ when I’m 45,” he told People magazine. Jagger was 31, and he and the Rolling Stones had recorded the game-changing single 10 years before, in the early stages of a decade in which the band reframed the blues, the British Invasion and rock ’n’ roll itself. The hubris of Mick’s comment, the implication that there were other worlds to be conquered and, more ominously, that the Stones might leave behind the world they had forged, struck the metaphorical chord. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” was the band’s axe-grinding soul: Keith Richards came up with the hook and the title while drifting to sleep one night and recorded it, bare bones, on a cassette player by his bed. Jagger later wrote the lyrics poolside at a Tampa hotel while the band was on tour. Add drums. Add bass. Book it at 3:45. When the song landed in America in June of ’65, it went to No. 1 and stayed there.

Jagger certainly was singing “Satisfaction” at age 45 (actually he’d just turned 46), snapping it out as a set-closer on the Stones’ bristling Steel Wheels tour in 1989. He was singing it onstage in 2015 as well, as a guest of Taylor Swift, who was born in 1989. Over the many years, Jagger’s “I’d rather be dead” pronouncement has evolved away from arrogance and toward happy irony. He and Richards both turn 75 this year, and as the Stones opened their 2018 tour, with dates in the U.K., there was “Satisfaction” on the set list—the predetermined final encore, the classic and quintessential rock ’n’ roll song.

Despite the portentous demise of guitarist Brian Jones in 1969 and the band’s historical fondness for hard drugs, despite the departure of backbone bassist Bill Wyman in the early ’90s, and despite the Keith-vs.-Mick feuds that have long dotted the landscape, time has remained improbably on the Rolling Stones’ side. They’re not only still together, they’re still more or less doing what they’ve always done. Their latest album, 2016’s Blue & Lonesome, by way of example, is made up of covers of songs written by the same folks the Stones were covering 50-some years ago—blues colossi like Willie Dixon and Howlin’ Wolf.

And of the 19 songs that anchored the 2018 tour, 17 of them were Jagger/Richards numbers composed during the 1960s and early 1970s, soul-lifters off of one monumental album after another (Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers . . .) Another song on the list was 1981’s “Start Me Up,” which, along with “Satisfaction” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” hinges upon one of the Richards riffs that have burrowed unstoppably into auditory history. Keith, in 2018, is still out there on his Fender, after the sound. Mick is still glorious: preening and plaintive. Charlie Watts still swings, driving the action, cool on his simple kit. And that’s still Ronnie Wood playing the tasty guitar. Ladies and gentlemen: the Rolling Stones.

They’ve aged of course, to be sure, and some fans grumbled about the U.K. shows. A ticket at 250 quid? Reviewers allowed that there were some imprecisions in the gigs, some softened edges. Yet by and by the crowd and the critics could not help themselves. They’d been elevated. And they were acutely aware, as the old Stones ripped through the songs that will never die—“Sugar,” “Shelter,” “Sympathy”—that even now you could see and hear straight into their beating hearts. Straight into the heart of, yes, that’s right, wait for it, the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world.

While Lennie James’s impact as Morgan Jones in Fear the Walking Dead might have only been slight so far, he’s set to make a big splash once the second half of Season 4 gets underway. At the zombie spin-off show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, James revealed that we’ll shortly see Morgan somewhere we never thought we’d see him … on the toilet.

“I got a phone call from [showrunners] Andrew [Chambliss] and Ian [Goldberg] saying, ‘I have to have a really serious conversation with you, Lennie,’” James explained. “‘There is a thing we’re thinking of putting into the script, and we want to be really sure that you are okay with it.’ And I thought, ‘Oh, this is going to be really exciting’. And all it was was, ‘Can we show Morgan going to the toilet?’ That was it.”

He joked, “I felt like a big boy, I did number twos on my own,” before adding, “And also there are new challenges for Morgan coming up in the second half about where he belongs, if he belongs, and how he belongs.”

James’s revelation prompted a question at a press conference later about whether walkers defecate. Scott M. Gimple, who oversees the Walking Dead universe, replied, “I think there’s a fermentation process that could result in projectiles.”

Newbies

But while there’s that to look forward to from Morgan, and who-knows-what from the show’s zombies, there are also five new characters to put on our radar. Each can be seen in the brand new trailer for Season 4B.

Ian Goldberg made the announcement. “They’re going to bring very different energies to the show,” he said. “Some are going to bring humour and a different way of looking at the world. Some are going to bring hope. We’re gonna maybe take away that hope, but they’re going to bring a lot of variety to the show.”

While Goldberg named the actors — Aaron Stanford, Steven Henderson, Tonya Pinkins, Mo Collins, and Daryl Chill Mitchell — he stopped short of revealing character names and details.

Andrew Chambliss also teased that the trailer may have revealed the antagonist or antagonists of the second half of the season. He added cryptically, “This person or persons may know our characters better than they do and may have some insights that they don’t have.”

Season 4B of Fear the Walking Dead premieres on August 12.

11 People Dead After a Duck Boat Capsized During a Severe Thunderstorm on Missouri Lake

Eleven people, including children, have died and a number of passengers remain missing after a duck boat capsized during a thunderstorm that ravaged Table Rock Lake in Missouri on Thursday.

About 31 people were on a Ride the Ducks boat in the Ozarks when strong winds caused it to capsize, Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader said in a press conference broadcast by KY3.

Rader said seven people were transported to the hospital with injuries and added that the recovery and rescue mission would continue throughout the night with teams of divers. It is not clear how many people remain missing.

He said he believed the boat turned over and sunk due to the stormy weather at about 8 p.m. ET with the thunderstorm winds as high as 60 mph, according to NBC News. The duck boat remains at the bottom of the lake.

Rader added that an off-duty sheriff’s deputy was on the boat and helped rescue people.

The Table Rock Lake Twitter page tweeted it was “aware of a major incident that happened tonight” at the lake “and ask that you pray for those involved as well as law enforcement/first responders.”

In a video captured and shared on Facebook by Jeanie Phillips-Hudson Carr, two duck boats are seen struggling to reach land while a thunderstorm raged on.

One duck boat is seen gaining speed in the lake as it appears to make headway toward land, while the other remains left behind and struggling to remain upright against ferocious winds.

Toward the end of the video, the second boat is seen slowly turning on its side and sinking into the water as shocked bystanders watch from the Branson Belle, a showboat that helped rescue people, according to the Springfield News-Leader.

In a second video posted by Phillips-Hudson Carr, workers on the showboat can be heard desperately calling for rope and help to try to rescue the stricken amphibious boat.

“We are at Branson and on the showboat! A storm came in as we got on and there was 2 ducks that you ride out there and 1 went under. Not sure if everyone on it is ok,” Phillips-Hudson Carr wrote.

In audio obtained by the News-Leader, a dispatcher tells first responders people aboard the Branson Belle were pulling victims out of the water.

“We have a report of a duck that has sank completely,” the dispatcher said. “They have lost sight of it. About 10 people have surfaced, but there were about 20 people on board.”

“They are attempting to pull people out on the Belle and the surrounding dock,” the dispatcher continued. “We have CPR in progress on one. One more they can see, face down in the water. They’re trying to get to at this time.”

A first responder could be heard telling the dispatcher, “Copy that. If you would, go ahead and notify Mercy. Tell’ em to send every truck they’ve got.”

The duck boat was part of Ride the Duck in Branson, Missouri, a fleet which was bought last year by Ripley Entertainment, the company that owns Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Suzanne Smagala-Potts, a spokeswoman for the company tells PEOPLE they are aware of the situation.

“Number one, our priority is the families and employees, and that’s what we’re focusing on. We are in contact with authorities but we do not have enough information at this time to confirm anything,” Smagala-Potts says.

According to the company’s website, Ride the Ducks is a guided amphibious tour for both land and water that lasts 70 minutes.

Tragic: Husband Finds Wife and Her Mechanic Lover Both Dead from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning After They Had Sex in the Garage [Video]

A New Jersey man came home Monday night to find both his wife and her lover dead in the garage.

The two died of carbon monoxide poisoning while having sex.

via People:

Kahali Johnson said he returned home that night and smelled a strong odor coming from the garage of his apartment, according to WABC. So, he went to investigate, WABC reported.

In the garage, Johnson said he found his wife, Tameka Hargrave, and their mechanic near a running vehicle.

“As I tried to step to open the last garage door, I see the mechanic, he’s laid out,” Johnson told the station. “She’s just a few feet away, she’s laid out. And pretty much I had to call 911 because, at this time, with that level of emissions, I knew that they were gone.”

Sources told KXAS that Hargrave, 39, and the unnamed mechanic, 59, were allegedly having sex in the car when they succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. Law enforcement sources reportedly told the station that Hargrave had allegedly been having sex with the mechanic in exchange for his car work.

The Newark Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene and police said the deaths appeared to be accidental, NJ.com reported. Newark Fire Division evacuated the building, and one person was taken to a local hospital, according to the publication.

As for Johnson, the grieving husband told WABC that he blames the apartment complex.

“Basically she died because of carbon monoxide,” Johnson said. “They do not have adequate alarm systems, because if there had been an alarm in that garage, people would have been alerted to the fact that it was going on.”

Sad.

FASHION DEAL UPDATE:

3 YouTube Daredevils Dead in Waterfall Accident

Three popular YouTubers died on Tues., July 3, after accidentally falling over a waterfall more than 1,000 feet in height. Two of the deceased were founders of the High on Life YouTube channel, which featured exotic travel and dangerous outdoor stunts.

The three victims were reportedly part of a group of seven swimming near Shannon Falls outside Squamish, British Columbia. According to eyewitness reports, Megan Scraper slipped and fell 30 meters into fast-moving water just above the falls. Alexey Lyakh and Ryker Gamble are believed to have jumped into the water to try and save her, but all three were swept over the falls. Their bodies were recovered the next day.

According to the CBC, Gamble and Lyakh started High on Life with two other childhood friends. Previous videos posted by the deceased and the High on Life channel show lots of exotic travel as well as some high-risk outdoor activities, including cliff jumping and crossing decrepit rail bridges. Some of the group’s YouTube videos emphasize the danger of certain activities. One video, featuring Gamble descending a harrowing natural water chute, is accompanied by a disclaimer stating that “Our team has been trained and involved in gymnastics, diving, stunts, and the extreme sports community for over a decade,” and warning others against trying to replicate what they see.

Get Data Sheet, Fortune’s technology newsletter.

The accident has nonetheless added new fuel to long-running debates about the potential danger of social media featuring risky activities. That’s in large part because the High on Life group has previously been accused of violating safety and natural preservation rules. In 2016, Gamble and Lyakh posted video showing themselves leaving designated trails in Yellowstone National Park and walking near the Grand Prismatic Spring, an ecologically delicate and potentially dangerous hot spring. They were ultimately sentenced to seven days in jail and apologized for their behavior.

Members of the group, including Gamble and Lyakh, were also accused of violating rules elsewhere. Those incidents included using bicycles in prohibited areas in Death Valley National Park; swinging from the Corona Arch rock formation in Utah; and wakeboarding on the sensitive Bonneville Salt Flats in the same state. At least some of those incidents were filmed, according to citations.

High on Life currently has more than 500,000 subscribers, no doubt partly thanks to such high-risk stunts. Some have argued that the quest for thrilling footage led the team to take more extreme risks, without the safeguards or oversight that might have been imposed by a more conventional media organization. That dynamic mirrors the documented tendency of algorithm-driven media platforms to encourage ideological extremism among users.

In a video message posted after the tragic deaths, other members of the High on Life team praised the trio’s legacy. “They lived every single day to its fullest,” the memorial stated in part. “They stood for positivity, courage, and living the best life that you can, and they shared and taught their values to millions of people worldwide.”

CNN’s Chris Cuomo Blasts Trump for ‘Disrespecting’ Dead Journalists

CNN

In the final moments of his first primetime hour on Monday, CNN’s Chris Cuomo delivered a sharp rebuke of the Trump administration’s decision not to lower flags to half-mast in memory of the five journalists killed in last week’s mass shooting at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland.

Cuomo began by noting that the shooting not only took lives and “shattered families” but also “added another layer of shame on all lawmakers for not doing something to stop the damn shootings.” As the host put it, recent mass shootings in Las Vegas and Parkland “warranted” flags being lowered outside federal building, so why not this one?

“I’m afraid I know the answer,” Cuomo said. “And it’s because President Trump doesn’t like the media.”

Son Planned Fake Robbery at Parents’ Home—All Three Wound Up Dead

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

It was so simple.

Matthew Lindquist, a 21-year-old Connecticut man, wanted to exchange his dad’s guns for drugs, so he came up with a plan to fake a robbery at his parent’s house, intending to blame it on “two black guys,” according to an arrest affidavit unsealed Tuesday. But the plot went horribly awry—and Lindquist and his parents ended up dead.

It all began days before Christmas, when Lindquist made a deal with another man, Sergio Correa, promising to give him his dad’s guns in exchange for drugs, according to the 17-page arrest affidavit. Together, the pair would fake the robbery, with Correa tying up Matthew to make it look real, the affidavit says.

Black Soldier Found Dead In Maryland’s Deadly Flash Flood After Helping Stranger

The body of a Black National Guardsman who disappeared during treacherous floods in Maryland on Sunday was found in the Patapsco River Tuesday afternoon, Howard County police confirmed to Baltimore’s WBAL.

Local emergency crews used swift water rescue, truck, and ATVs in their search for Eddison Hermond, 39, an Air Force veteran and active-duty member of the Maryland Army National Guard, on Monday. Hermond, wearing a White t-shirt and Black shorts, was pulled underneath the water after he helped rescue a woman and her cat during devastating flooding in Ellicott City on Sunday afternoon, The Baltimore Sun reported. “He stepped over the ledge to try to get to me, and he was washed away,” Kate Bowman, who was helped by Hermond, said.

But what led Hermond to Bowman before his tragic disappearance and death? Here is what else we know about Hermond:

Hermond, who was 6 feet tall with an athletic build, had been visiting a local bar with friends when his day took a turn for the worse, Howard County Police Chief Gary Gardner said. The historic downpour ravaged homes and streets, with the water tragically carrying Hermond away seconds after he helped Bowman. Witnesses last saw the soldier being carried by the current toward the Patapsco River, Bonnie Hoppa, Hermond’s friend wrote on Facebook.

One of the soldier’s friends filed a missing person report with Howard County Police Department after his disappearance.

A “Hope altar” was erected for Hermond, with friends being encouraged to gather around it on Tuesday. Hoppa’s Facebook post was updated after learning about Hermond’s body being recovered, saying that she was waiting for confirmation on his death from official sources after Hermond’s family and next-of-kin had been notified.

There were no other reported deaths from the flood, making Hermond the only fatality as of Tuesday.

‘Fear the Walking Dead’: Morgan Helps Nick Find Peace

SPOILER ALERT: Warning, this article contains spoilers from the Season 4, Episode 3 of Fear the Walking Dead. Proceed at your own risk.

There are a lot of parallels between Nick and the Morgan from three or four seasons ago in The Walking Dead. Both spent a chunk of time being a solo savage on in the open, both took it so far they lost themselves, and both tried to right the ship by going into a self-prescribed exile — the season started with Morgan locking himself up in Jadis’ junkyard and Nick on a long stint of refusing to leave The Diamond.

“You try to do the right thing, and you end up doing the worst,” Nick tells his mother Madison in a flashback to when the Vultures still had The Diamond under siege. He went out hoping to help his mom find food, and when a mustachioed Vulture – and Charlie, who continues to stab the group in the back – arrive at their spot and take the supplies before them. Nick nearly kills the man.

Morgan notices early that they’re kindred spirits. After Al’s botched escape that dumps the SWAT truck into a ditch, everyone but Nick and Morgan head off on a mission find something to pull it out – a mission that only amounts to the two groups earning a bit of good will from each other – and the two left begin to bond. Nick offers Morgan half a protein bar after seeing the man’s sweet skills with a staff, and he secretly sees Al’s tape of Morgan’s story. The bonding comes to a screeching halt when the two see a blue Camino drive by – the same the mustachioed Vulture drove in the flashback – and Nick takes off after it.

The two end up in a small town, and take cover in a drugstore. Nick confronts Morgan about why he doesn’t kill – because almost every character has to at this point. He already knows the answer – “I lose people, and then I lose myself” – because he watched Al’s tape, but it doesn’t stop him from prying.

“You don’t kill, but I bet you did,” he tells Morgan. Morgan tries to talk him out of finding the man in the Camino, but Nick takes off to look over the town. He eventually finds the car, and the Vulture from the flashback. The man is surprised to see Nick, but Morgan – who stumbled across the man first, and was trying to get him to leave – stops him from killing the Vulture. The man heads off and Nick tells Morgan the only way to stop him is to kill him, so Morgan lets him go and Nick gets himself some sweet, bloody revenge.

“I know where you are Nick, because I was there,” Morgan tells a blood-soaked Nick after he kills the man. He brings up his time with Eastman, and lets Nick take his Art of Peace book. Morgan seems ready to pay-it-forward the way Eastman did for him.

Nick wanders off to read the book, and pulls a blue bonnet – picked from a field him and Madison found where she told him to try to find something good every time they leave The Diamond – from his pocket. He looks at peace, and seems ready to let Morgan help him. And that’s when Charlie shows up and shoots him in the chest.

Yep, the show’s new direction seems hell-bent on brushing a lot of aspects of what made FTWD interesting for three seasons – different time period, visually unique setting, it’s characters – under the rug as quickly as possible. Charlie shot Nick for killing the Vulture and runs off just as the others arrive with the SWAT truck. He dies choking on his own blood surrounded by his sister Alicia, Luci, and Strand.

The last scene cuts from his bloodied, dead body to one of him laying in a field of blue bonnets. Maybe Morgan helped him find peace after all.

Some unanswered questions:

– How long ago was the Vulture’s siege on The Diamond? The guy Nick kills seems genuinely shocked to see him.

– Where is Madison? Dead? Taken by the Vultures?

– Hopefully this week’s episode wasn’t Frank Dillane — one of the original cast member’s — last. If the season continues with flashbacks, he should still be around.

– Was there some chemistry between John and Luci?

Charles Neville Of The Neville Brothers Dead At 79

Charles Neville arrives with The Neville Brothers on stage to perform during the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival at the New Orleans Fairgrounds Racetrack in New Orleans, Sunday, May 4, 2008. (AP Photo/Dave Martin)

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans-born saxophone player Charles Neville, who once backed up B.B. King and later gained fame with the Neville Brothers band and their rollicking blend of funk, jazz and rhythm and blues, has died. He was 79.

His death came Thursday, months after he disclosed he was fighting pancreatic cancer.

Neville’s career dated to the 1950s when he performed with King and other musical greats. Yet he was best known for three decades of performances with his siblings Aaron, Art and Cyril as the Grammy-winning Neville Brothers band. The band was formed in the 1970s and gained fans with high-energy performances featuring a distinctive fusion of funk, jazz and New Orleans rhythm and blues.

A publicist for Aaron Neville’s management agency confirmed the death in an email. Aaron Neville, who first disclosed the news to WWL-TV in New Orleans, declined an interview but posted a lengthy tribute to his brother on Facebook.

“I know you have a spot in the heavenly band next to James Booker, James Black, Herbert Hardesty, Fats Domino, Johnny Adams all the jazz bebop players who you turned me on to,” Aaron Neville wrote. “Dizzy, Charlie Parker, Miles and the list goes on.”

Charles Neville, who lived in Massachusetts in recent years, had announced in January that he had pancreatic cancer.

His death came a day before the opening of his home town’s signature musical and cultural event, the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

The Neville Brothers were a fixture on closing day of the festival for years. And members of the family continue to be a part of the event. Aaron is scheduled for a May 4 performance. Charles’ daughter, singer Charmaine Neville, is scheduled for a May 5 performance, the same day Aaron’s son Ivan performs with his band Dumpstaphunk.

Charles’ Neville’s life included a stint at Louisiana’s state prison in the early 1960s. He told an interviewer that he was sentenced to five years for possession of two marijuana cigarettes. The prison was notoriously dangerous but Neville said on the public radio program “Music Inside Out” that the time there sharpened his musicianship.

He explained that he worked in the prison music room. “I stayed in the music room practicing all day,” he said. He also had access to books on music, and, at times, exposure to other imprisoned musicians. “James Booker was there,” he said, referring to a celebrated New Orleans pianist.

Tennessee Waffle House Shooting Leave 4 Dead, 4 Others Injured

Retail Signs

Source: David Kozlowski / Getty

A shooting at a Tennessee Waffle House restaurant left four people dead and another four suffering from injuries. The assault was stopped when a customer rushed the gunman, snatched away an assault rifle, which prompted the man to flee on foot with barely wearing any clothes.

Local outlet News Channel 5 reports:

It happened around 3:25 a.m. Sunday at 3571 Murfreesboro Pike near Hobson Pike.

Metro Nashville Police Department officials named 29-year-old Travis Reinking, from Illinois, as a person of interest in the shooting, saying the vehicle the gunman used was registered to him.

Police said Reinking drove his pickup truck into the Waffle House parking lot around 3:18 a.m.. He sat in the truck for a few minutes before getting out and immediately shooting and killing two people outside of the restaurant with an AR-15.

Officers said he then went inside and shot and killed another victim.

The outlet adds that the customer, also 29, was able to wrestle the gun from Reinking’s hands and tossed it away. Reinking left the area after she shed a coat and was not wearing any clothes in some reports. Reports say Reinking may have lived in the area and fled home after witnesses say they spotted the man walking near woods shirtless.

‘The Walking Dead’ star Jeffrey Dean Morgan Is Calling For a Negan Spin-Off

With Fear the Walking Dead proving a success – it’s now on Season 4 – it’s perhaps no surprise that Walking Dead bosses are talking about expanding the universe further. One of the major characters to make a big impact on the main show has been villain Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Fans both love to hate and love to love the charismatic bad guy. So the prospect of a spin-off focused on Savior boss Negan is very alluring – and not just to fans. Jeffrey Dean Morgan would love one too.

“I would like to see Negan before the zombie apocalypse,” he told FANDOM while doing publicity for his latest film Rampage. In the movie, Morgan plays a character called Agent Russell, who bears more than a passing resemblance to the Walking Dead bad boy. So much so, in fact, that the actor also discussed the similarities between the two characters, along with the chances that Russell is Negan, and the idea that Rampage could be a prequel to The Walking Dead. You can watch him talking about this here.

More Negan Required

Negan-The-Walking-Dead
Negan was captured by Jadis — and manipulated her into releasing him by tugging on the heartstrings.

“Now, if he’s this guy, Agent Russell, I’d like to see that,” continued Morgan. “But [Walking Dead creator] Robert Kirkman has done a little bit of thought on the Negan pre-zombie apocalypse, and I would be more than happy to see that. I would like to take part in some filming of that. I think that would help explain this character a great deal. Because, unfortunately, the way things go with so many characters and storylines, we don’t see enough — and I think that that is needed, especially when you have a character like Negan.”

The main show has only revealed glimpses, up to now, of Negan’s backstory. And what we’ve learned has been very much according to Negan himself, who is not necessarily a reliable source. Especially when the moments when he’s let details slip have been during periods where he’s been vulnerable. Notably, when marooned in a hut surrounded by walkers with Father Gabriel, and also when tied up by Jadis. He’s certainly been able to manipulate both by spilling some secrets about his past in each instance. So we surely have to take what we’ve learned so far about Negan with a pinch of salt.

Backstory Reveal

The-Walking-Dead-Negan-Gabriel
Negan recounted elements of his backstory to soften Father Gabriel and bend him to his will.

But while Morgan definitely feels Negan’s story could be better explored in his own spin-off series, he did tease that there could be more Negan history revelations to come in The Walking Dead.

“[We’ve had] a little bit more this season, which is nice, but I’d like to see more. I think it’s important not only for the development of the character but I think the show. So we’ll see,” he said.

When FANDOM interviewed show boss Greg Nicotero recently, he told us that he’d love to work on a frozen zombie spin-off – which Morgan would also love to be a part of.

“Why don’t we just go up to Canada or upstate New York where I live? That’d be great,” he said. “I’m sick of shooting in Georgia in the middle of summer. That’s rough. I like the idea of shooting some frozen zombies. That would be cool as hell. Literally and figuratively.”

Rampage is in cinemas now.

‘The Walking Dead’: Treachery Within the Saviors Exposed

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from the Season 8, Episode 15 of The Walking Dead, entitled “Worth.” Proceed with caution.

Last week’s episode ended with Negan miraculously escaping from Jadis’ captivity. On the way back to Sanctuary, he picked up a mysterious passenger. Armed with the knowledge that Simon ordered the massacre of the Scavengers, Negan was determined to expose the treachery within his ranks.

Negan Is Back

With Negan presumed dead, Simon started to feel comfortable as the big man in charge. He even enjoyed having Gregory underneath his heel. Dwight — who has been working as a double agent — began feeling safe as well. Then, Negan’s whistle broke the silence.

At first, it seemed like Dwight was exposed. However, Negan reassured Dwight, reminding him he needs to do the right thing “when the time comes.”

Negan then held a meeting with his inner circle. Simon started to convince him that he only did what needed to be done. “I’m gonna need you on your knees,” Negan said while wielding Lucille. It seemed like lights out for Simon right then and there but Negan surprisingly declared, “all is forgiven.”

Negan then outlined his plan to bring down the Hilltop once and for all — by surrounding the community with outposts and sniping anyone who leaves for supplies, dwindling them down.

Simon’s Mutiny

Simon, motivated by his brush with death, decided to overthrow Negan. He and his loyal followers met Dwight outside. Once more, Negan’s whistle sound. Dwight had tipped the Savior leader off to Simon’s mutiny. Negan then ordered that Simon’s followers be gunned down, but spared Simon’s life, offering him the chance to fight for control.

With the leadership of the Saviors at stake, the two men squared off in Sanctuary’s main hall. An enraged Simon seemed to be getting the upper hand, but in the end, Negan knocked him down with a leg sweep and choked Simon to his last breath. Thus, Simon’s short-lived mutiny ended.

A Traitor Is Unmasked

While the fight was happening, Dwight handed Gregory the map with Negan’s plan. He told the former Hilltop mayor to deliver it to Rick. Gregory bolted out of Sanctuary as fast as he could.

After the fight, Negan awarded Dwight the position as his “right hand man.” Before Dwight could express his gratitude, Negan had something to show him. Negan opened the door into the next room. Laura – the woman who witnessed Dwight’s betrayal – was inside.

Negan began to put the pieces together of Dwight’s betrayal – calling him a “nothing” and a “nobody.” Dwight was still trying to process what had happened. Negan revealed to Dwight that those plans he showed were fake. At first, Negan thought about killing Dwight but figured he was more useful alive.

A lot of questions have been answered in this week’s episode of The Walking Dead. Dwight and Simon received Negan’s punishment like most fan’s expected. But what does Negan really have planned for the Hilltop? What role will Dwight play in the final battle? And will Rick and the others be prepared for what’s to come?

The season-long “all out war” will end with next Sunday’s finale.

‘The Walking Dead’: Jadis’ Plan For Negan Revealed

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from the Season 8, Episode 14 of The Walking Dead entitled “Still Gotta Mean Something.” Proceed with caution.

Fans finally learned Jadis’ plan for Negan Sunday night.

The leader (and sole survivor) of the Scavengers captured the Savior leader after his scuffle with Rick. She took his clothes and his barb wire-wrapped bat, Lucille.

A flashback revealed how Jadis survived the massacre orchestrated by Simon, Negan’s top lieutenant. As the Saviors were mowing down the Scavengers, Jadis fled. She found a body and covered herself with blood, playing possum. After the massacre, she mourned and cleaned herself up.

Jadis
Jadis took Negan prisoner and his bat, Lucille.

Negan — who didn’t know about the massacre or that Simon ordered it — pleaded with Jadis. “That was the work of someone not following the program,” Negan said. “I’ll own this. I am sorry for this.”

Jadis chained Negan to a trolley, and then wheeled out another trolley with a walker tied to it. It appeared to give Negan a chance to fight for his life gladiator-style, as she did Rick earlier in the season.

A still tied-up Negan was able to get a gun and flare, as well as some of Jadis’ personal photos. He threatened to burn the photos with the flare. Jadis tried to wrestle the flare away, not only to save the photos, but signal a helicopter flying overhead.

Jadis
Jadis had a timer set for the helicopter pick-up.

The flare went out, and by the time she retrieved another one, the helicopter flew away. She threatened to burn Lucille as revenge, but Negan begged her not to (revealing Lucille was the name of his dead wife).

Jadis
Who is piloting the mystery helicopter?

She decided to spare both Lucille and Negan. Negan offered to join forces with her again, but she refused, retreating back into the heaps of garbage.

Meanwhile, Morgan continued to lose his sanity, setting up his departure from the show. He and Rick went after the Saviors that escaped Hilltop, brutally killing them all.

Both Rick and Carol told Morgan he was someone who saves, and not kills, but to no avail. When Rick asked why Negan saved him all the way back in Episode 1, Morgan said, “because my son was there.”

Later, after discovering Henry (whom he considers his son) was still alive, Morgan wept.

It was also revealed that the arrow that struck Tara was not tainted, so she will not turn.

5 Reasons Why Season 8 of ‘The Walking Dead’ Has Fans Fleeing

Ratings for the eighth season of The Walking Dead have dropped to first season levels, the lowest in the long-running franchise’s history.

And while the show is still among the most-watched on cable, what’s causing audiences to flee?

FANDOM breaks down five reasons why season eight of The Walking Dead has struggled.

1. Never-ending Conflict

AMC has branded the conflict between Rick Grimes and Negan as an all-out war, but it feels like a drawn-out war. That storyline lasted two full seasons, with both sides taking losses and no end in sight.

And while fan-favorite Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan has been fun to watch, his character is, well, problematic. Negan’s debut was savage and strong, but he’s basically become a caricature. If he had a mustache he’d be twirling it. Getting rid of Negan is the fastest and best way to get The Walking Dead back on track.

2. Too Many Characters

The all-out war has involved numerous factions: The Saviors, Alexandria, Hilltop, the Kingdom, the Scavengers, and Oceanside. And while it makes sense that a war has many players, jumping back and forth between each only drags out the plot. Take Oceanside for example. While we love the idea of an all-female community surviving on its own, the multiple visits have netted nothing but guns – guns that could’ve been found in a stash. And don’t even get us started on the Scavengers, who we can’t even understand.

3. Not Enough Zombies

The title of the show is The Walking Dead, but walkers have taken a back seat to human conflict. On one hand it makes sense. As time passes, communities come together, build walls, and amass weapons to fight the dead. But there’s been more attacks among the living. The undead threat, the horror element that once drove the show, is now gone.

4. Carl’s Death

War has many casualties. So when Carl – one of the original cast members – died of a walker bite instead of in a blaze of glory against Negan, fans felt cheated. Moreover, Carl represented two important things. The first was hope – the fact that a kid could grow up in a post-apocalyptic world and become a leader. The second was family. As Carl lay dying, Rick said everything he did was for him. Now that his son is gone, Rick has lost that motivation.

5. Broken Families

As we just mentioned, family and bonds are important to The Walking Dead. Carl’s death not only ended a father-son relationship, but also the caring mother-son relationship he had with Michonne, and his burgeoning romance with Enid. These were relationships the show built up and fans were invested in. The same could be said about Glenn and Maggie. Even relationships between newer characters – like Aaron and Eric, and Tara and Denise – ended before they are developed. When the show loses those bonds, it loses viewers.

5 Frustrating Things About ‘The Walking Dead’ That Make No Sense

The Walking Dead is one of the best programmes on TV. Watched by millions of fans around the world, the hit show from AMC has become a global phenomenon. However, things don’t always go to plan (anyone remember that deer?). So let’s look at five of the strangest and most unrealistic aspects of The Walking Dead.

Excellent Dental Hygiene

TWD - Negan Shave
Dental (and overall) hygiene is pretty spectacular for a zombie apocalypse.

The Walking Dead takes place in an apocalyptic world. We often see Rick and the rest of the gang move from place to place, scavenging for food and supplies for survival. Food and water are pretty scarce, so it’s strange that every single character has perfect teeth. Seriously, every person on the show has teeth as white as milk.

While everyone is trying to survive and find food, they must stop off and pick up a load of Oral-B ultra white and Listerine: Complete Whitening mouthwash. Either that or they have absolutely horrendous breath.

We’ve never, ever seen Rick and his gang of survivors pick up a load of dental hygiene products. I mean, do they even have toothbrushes anymore? If so, we haven’t seen them. Its an aspect of the show that just makes no sense. We need answers!

Unlimited Supply of Petrol

TWD - Rick and Vehicle
Just where do they get all this petrol from?

In every series of The Walking Dead, we have seen Rick, Daryl, and a host of other characters drive around in vehicles to get from point A to point B. In all eight series’, there has never been a time where petrol was an issue.

There seems to be a never-ending supply of petrol and diesel for the various vehicles the characters use. Where does all this come from? Do they siphon it from other cars? If so, which ones. It was more believable in Series 1 when our gang of survivors were on the road and came across abandoned cars all the time, but now, nope.

They’ve only got a handful of vehicles they use and they can’t go about sharing fuel from one to another and I highly doubt they pop over to the local petrol station to fill up (just leave the cash by the register, folks), so how do they never run out of fuel?

Characters Never Wear Armour

walking dead rick on horseback riding through zombie horde
Characters never seem to protect themselves even though a single scratch is deadly.

In The Walking Dead, a single scratch from a walker is deadly. A single scratch. So why do the characters never seem to protect themselves? You could argue that armour is hard to come by, but the folks over in the Kingdom seem to have loads available, so why not use it?

Remember that time Carol was rescued by survivors from the Kingdom? They were protecting themselves pretty well. Once all the communities came together, did they not share? Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and everyone else just ride into battle wearing jeans and a t-shirt. But why?!

Never mind the danger of getting shot by The Saviours, what happens if you come across a walker? Sure, chances are that a walker will be shot or beheaded, but why take the risk? If all it takes is a single scratch to die and let the virus take over, surely it would be wise to suit up?

Why Is the Grass Not Overgrown

TWD - Prison Aerial Image
Who exactly cuts the lawn? Why is it not an overgrown mess?

Gardeners in The Walking Dead must be super busy throughout the year. Every location we visit on the show seems to be pretty well looked after. Take the prison for example. It’s filled with walkers, the interior is dark and damp, and there’s a sense of misery surrounding the place.

Then you look outside and it’s almost perfectly preserved. The grass is always perfectly mown. Perhaps the survivors use grass cutters every day to keep it tidy, but considering survival is of paramount importance, it’s highly unlikely that lawn styling is at the top of their to-do list.

What about lawnmowers? These machines are so noisy that they would attract attention in a heartbeat. Rick and the gang of survivors should be climbing through jungles at this point. Considering no-one looks after the environment, it seems pretty well kept.

Accurate Headshots. Every. Single. Time.

TWD - Rick aiming pistol
Running? Sprinting? No problem! Perfect headshots all the time.

Almost every episode of The Walking Dead features some kind of combat, either between groups of survivors or against the reanimated dead. This, in itself, is to be expected. What’s not to be expected, however, is how good everyone seems to be at shooting.

All of the survivors seem to have insane skills when it comes to bringing down the enemy. It’s hard enough to hit a target when standing still, so the fact that Rick and the other group members can run and hit their target in the head perfectly is just so unrealistic.

It goes even further. Many people don’t have the training and skills to handle weaponry and are thrust into the story simply by chance. Yes, they must have been able to stay alive and survive by having at least some skill, but the fact that everyone can shoot a walker or another human in the head perfectly is silly.

The Walking Dead has reached its eighth season, and while it remains excellent television, the show can often leave you thinking “Really?” It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should offer at least some explanation for things that seem impossible.

Iowa Family-of-Four Found Dead in Their Mexican Condo While on Vacation

The bodies of an Iowa family-of-four have been found in the Mexican condo where they traveled for vacation last week, PEOPLE confirms.

There is no evidence of foul play at this time, authorities say. Autopsy results are pending.

Kevin and Amy Sharp, of Creston, were reportedly bound for Tulum on Mexico’s Caribbean coast when they headed out of the country with their children, Adrianna and Sterling.

Just after midnight Friday, the family was reported missing by relatives in Creston, according to a news release from Union County authorities. The Sharps had arrived in Mexico, according to a Creston police official, but were not heard from again.

Police on Friday quickly contacted the U.S. State Department, according to the county’s news release. In an ensuing welfare check, authorities discovered all four Sharps dead in their condo: Kevin, 41, Amy, 38, 12-year-old son Sterling and 7-year-old daughter Adrianna.

Amy’s sister told the Creston News Advertiser that the last that relatives had heard from the Sharps was not long after they arrived in Mexico. “On Wednesday at 7 p.m., Amy sent a text to our mom that said, ‘We made it to our condo,’ ” Renee Hoyt said. “That is the last communication she made.”

Hoyt said she had been told that Kevin texted someone else about 5 p.m. on March 15 but did not respond to a subsequent message, according to the paper.

The family was scheduled to return to the U.S. on Wednesday, the News Advertiser reports.

County official Mark Williams tells PEOPLE he does not have any information about where the bodies were found in the condo or for how long it appears they were dead before being discovered.

A cousin of Amy’s told ABC News, “To my knowledge, they went to sleep and never woke up.”

According to the Yucatan Times, the kids’ bodies were in the living room and their parents were in a bedroom. The four were “found in advanced state of decomposition.”

The Sharps’ relatives are requesting their privacy, according to the county news release.

A State Department official tells PEOPLE the American consulate in Mérida, Mexico, is supporting the Sharps’ relatives and “we extend our sincere condolences to friends and family.”

The official declined additional comment “out of respect for the family during this difficult time.”

Authorities in Tulum did not immediately return requests for comment.

Late Thursday, someone who appears to know the Sharps posted about the case on Facebook before their bodies were found.

“They have not been in contact with family or friends since LAST Thursday night after reporting that they made it to their condo safely,” Ashli Peterson wrote.

In a follow-up post Friday, Peterson wrote, “There was no foul play! At this time that is all the information we have. Please respect the family at this time as they go through the grieving process. Thank you for all the posts, shares, and kind words.”

‘Fear the Walking Dead’: The Best Weapon to Have in a Zombie Attack

The world of Fear the Walking Dead and its sister show The Walking Dead is a very dangerous place.

Threats lurk around every corner, whether in undead or human form. So what’s the very best weapon to arm yourself with during the zombie apocalypse? Turns out one stands out among the rest: the axe. Madison Clark carried a hatchet in Season 3 of Fear the Walking Dead, and Rick Grimes uses a handaxe in the current season of The Walking Dead.

An axe is a powerful slashing weapon that only requires one hand to wield (unlike, say, Michonne’s katana). It has greater reach and force than a short blade (like a dagger). There’s also the utilitarian value as well, chopping wood, rope, etc.

Whereas knives may be easier to find, they made not be able to penetrate bone or armor as well as an ax. Whereas a knife can stab and slash, axes are generally more effective. Axes do have the danger of getting lodged, but with enough momentum, an ax should be able to cleanly slice through.

Live to Fight Another Day

Sometimes it’s not about fighting the undead, but getting away from them. The professional bodyguards over at Draken Security recommend putting as much distance between you and your assailant as possible, with a well-placed shove or even better, a kick.

And if you want to really get range on your enemies, try a projectile weapon like a recurve bow. Unfortunately, bows require ammunition, light/visibility, and have a minimum range. The last thing you want to have is a zombie closing in close and being unable to let an arrow fly, or worse, run out of arrows.

Check out some more zombie fighting techniques in the video above, and be sure to watch Season 3 of Fear the Walking Dead, on available now on home entertainment.

Season 4 of Fear premieres this April.

Rose McGowan: Harvey Weinstein ‘Would Prefer It If I Were Dead’

Rose McGowan claims in a new interview that disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who she has accused of sexually assaulting her, wishes she was dead.

The Charmed alum, 44, is among more than 50 women who have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, and told Britain’s Sunday People that she has been followed and intimidated since she went public with her allegation last year that Weinstein, 65, raped her in his hotel room in Park City, Utah, in 1997.

“I’m sure he would prefer it if I were dead,” she told Sunday People. “He’s a sociopath. I am not afraid — but I should be. The people I find worse than him are his lawyers. The way they are acting has been disgusting.

“The people around him, that have supported him in his attempt to dominate and abuse women, are monsters, just as much as he is,” she continued. “There is no rehabilitation for that type of soul. They just need to fall off the planet. He doesn’t believe he has done anything wrong.”

As previously reported, Weinstein has denied McGowan’s assault claims, with his lawyer telling Us Weekly in a statement in January that McGowan was trying “to smear Mr. Weinstein with a bold lie.”

He has also denied claims by other women including Ashley Judd, Mira Sorvino, Annabella Sciorra and Daryl Hannah, with his spokesperson saying, “Mr. Weinstein believes that all of these relationships were consensual.”

The allegations surfaced in October 2017 after The New York Times published an expose claiming Weinstein had a history of sexual misconduct dating back 30 years. He was fired from his own company in the wake of the allegations and his wife, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, announced she was leaving him. Weinstein subsequently said he was seeking treatment and was spotted near a clinic in Arizona.

The allegations sent shockwaves through Hollywood and prompted the formation of the Time’s Up movement to provide legal defense for women who have faced sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace.

“Things are changing,” McGowan told Sunday People. “But there’s still so much to do. It’s about changing people’s lives.”

The actress told the newspaper that she is also planning to take further action against the former studio head, who she believes hired an Israeli spy company to harass her.

“It was violation on top of violation,” the Brave author said. “I believe they hacked my computer, released photos — they have done everything they can to ruin my life.”

We Need to Talk About Jadis’ Artwork in ‘The Walking Dead’

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from The Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 10 titled “The Lost and the Plunderers.” Proceed with caution.

The Walking Dead doesn’t mess around. Losing Carl in Season 8 Episode 9 wasn’t easy for fans, but it was time to close one arc so another could begin. And what better time to start telling new stories than the middle of a season? As everything burned behind Carl, Rick, and Michonne in the mid-season premiere, new stories were seeded to grow and become a new chapter.

Thanks to Jadis and Simon, the latest developments were also the most shocking moments of Season 8 Episode 10, “The Lost and the Plunderers.”

Jadis Says

It’s been a while since we were intimate with Jadis. Back in Season 8 Episode 7, “Time For After”, we all scratched our heads at Jadis painting in the nude, taking NSFW Rick pics. Since then, we’ve watched her double cross both Rick and Negan while speaking in weird pidgin english devoid of pronouns, quietly wishing she’d just STFU and help Rick beat The Saviors. But Jadis had a different idea of what success looked like for The Scavengers, and it didn’t include saving their lives.

It did, however, include a meat grinder.

After Simon murdered her entire colony and they turned to zombie, Jadis lured them all to a giant meat grinder and turned them all into mush on a conveyer belt.

Before pulverizing her new zombie colony, Jadis explained the origin of The Scavengers to Rick and Michonne while wearing a white dress, splattered in blood.

I used to come here to find things to paint on. Metal sheets. Fabrics. And then after everything changed, I realized this whole place was a canvas – but we were the paint. We could create something new. We could become something new. We did. This was our world, apart from everyone else, in every way. — Jadis

If post-apocalyptic leaders are opportunistic colonizers, Jadis was certainly the most creative. More importantly, Jadis started speaking in complete sentences for the first time, making this the most shocking moment of the episode.

Meanwhile, The Whisperers have been rumored to be making an appearance in The Walking Dead TV Series. Left alone to her own vices, this shocking plot twist may have just set the stage for Jadis to create and lead them.

Was this episode our last glimpse of Jadis, or are her complete sentences indicative of her next art project?

Idiots Rule

Simon has always had crazy eyes, but his allegiance to Negan always seemed to keep his loco in check. At every turn, Simon appeared to be Negan’s best Lieutenant. A lawful evil character in nature, Simon was scary because he did what he was told without asking why. Turns out that was fake news. Simon showed his true colors in Season 8 Episode 10 and went full Chaotic Evil.

Simon is a natural born killer, and he clearly doesn’t worry about following the leader.

Will he lead a coup within The Saviors to oust Negan, or will Negan set him up on a Tinder date with Lucille? Let’s hope for the latter, because Simon is scary af right now.

Negan, Just Admit It

It was bound to happen. While Simon went full evil, Negan went full lovable and fans don’t want him to die. Ever. When Rick told Negan that Carl is dead and left him a note, Negan’s backstory became more relevant than ever. Like a teacher who lost a student too soon, Negan is clearly heartbroken, and now we’re all crying with him.

Rick’s obsession with killing Negan is no longer his best source of power. It might be time to follow a different path, and consider Carl’s advice to stop fighting with Negan. Is Rick too consumed with vengeance to give peace with Negan a chance?

Ocean Size

Although it was the biggest snoozer of the entire episode, the ladies of Oceanside decided not to kill Enid, and we’re proud of them for making the right decision, so she can read the letter Carl left for her.

How will Enid react when she finds out about Carl?

You Win Or You Die

Ultimately, The Walking Dead Season 8 seems to have gone full Game of Thrones, with a twist. For many seasons now, members of colonies wind up dead en masse after poor decisions by leadership, but the leader is usually left standing – forever changed. Each leader rules their colony with a different governing philosophy, and believes they have done everything humanly possible to protect their people from flesh eating zombies and evildoer humans.

But with Simon making moves and Negan making us all cry, who are the leaders now? Is Jadis the Mother of Whisperers? Is Simon the new Ramsay Bolton of The Sanctuary? What about Negan – is he more like Jamie Lannister or Jon Snow ? Either way, there’s a battle amongst leaders which continues to end in the deaths of the people who trust them. Fans can only hope a leader with good character alignment wins long enough to keep Carl’s dream of peace alive in Alexandria before Jadis returns with The Whisperers in tow.

What did you think of the latest episode of The Walking Dead? Do you think Jadis is the new Mother of Whisperers? Let us know @getfandom on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram .

QUIZ: How Did These ‘The Walking Dead’ Characters Die?

It’s no surprise that there’s a fairly high kill count on The Walking Dead. New characters or original fan favorites (RIP Glenn), the series has proven that no one is safe. As we head into the second half of Season 8, it’s impossible to predict who will make it out alive.

With a constant threat at the remaining survivors’ doorstep and a revolving door of characters to care about who will only break your heart when they go and die on us, there’s a long list of dearly departed on the show. But how well do you remember the final swan song of these characters that met their end at the hands (or teeth) of walkers or other fellow survivors?

*Note: the questions in this quiz relate to the TV series only, not the comics. Also, “death” is considered once the living character passes, not when they reanimate and become undead.

In Syria, the New Offensive by Assad and the Russians Might Kill the Revolution, But It Will Be the Peace of the Dead

BEIRUT—The words “de-escalation zone” appear not to mean quite the same thing in Russian as they do in English.

That, at least, is a conclusion one might draw looking at the present scene in Syria’s East Ghouta, where the Russian air force has assisted its Syrian client regime in an enormous escalation of what was already an extremely high level of violence in the district on the eastern fringe of Damascus that has been under choking siege for five years, and was also the site of the infamous August 2013 Sarin gas attack that killed over 1,000 in a single morning.

The numbers speak for themselves: more than 250 people were killed by Syrian and Russian air bombardment, and over 1,000 wounded, on Monday and Tuesday alone, according to the Associated Press. At least four field hospitals have been rendered inoperative by apparently deliberate targeting, according to the Syrian American Medical Society, a relief organization with medical staff currently on the ground in Ghouta.

Police Commander Shot Dead in Downtown Chicago In Broad Daylight

A senior Chicago police commander was shot dead on Tuesday in a brazen early afternoon shooting that has even shocked a city where gun crime has become the norm.

Commander Paul Bauer, 53, was shot multiple times by a man reported by the Chicago Tribune to be a four-time felon known to police who was wearing body armour at the time of the shooting around 2pm Tuesday.

Bauer, a married father survived by a 13-year-old daughter, is believed to be the most senior police officer to be shot and killed in Chicago since the 1980s, and the first officer of any rank to be killed in 7 years.

‘The Walking Dead’: Where the Characters Stand Before the Midseason 8 Premiere

The second half of The Walking Dead Season 8 will see plenty of heartbreak and perhaps the end of the “all-out war” between Rick Grimes and Negan.

During the midseason finale, fans discovered that Negan’s Saviors were not so easily defeated by Rick’s Militia. Alexandria was burned down, with its survivors fleeing to the sewers. It was there were Rick reunited with Carl, only to learn that his son was bitten by a walker — a death sentence.

Here’s where the major characters stand before the midseason premiere.

Negan

the walking dead season 8 negan

Negan has had more lives than a cat. Seemingly pinned down with Gabriel by a walking herd, he survived, rallied the remaining Saviors, and attacked Alexandria. He waited for Rick to return to ambush him, and the two exchanged blows before Rick fled. He is unrelenting in his quest to display the heads of “the king” aka Ezekiel, “the widow” aka Maggie, and Rick.

Carl

the walking dead season 8 carl

Over the last eight seasons, Carl has gone from young man to brave leader. But despite becoming hardened after so many losses, including his mother Lori, Carl still learned compassion. He tried to sacrifice himself so that Negan would spare Alexandria. He helped the mysterious Siddiq to safety, getting bitten by a walker in the process. A bite is a death sentence. If Carl asks Michonne to help him end his own life, it will be the second time she’s had to assist a friend’s suicide — the first being Andrea.

Rick

the walking dead season 8 rick

Rick has vowed to kill Negan, and will surely be emboldened to do so after the death of his son and destruction of Alexandria. He will also want revenge against Jadis and the Scavengers, who promised to help him but fled.

Michonne

Michonne, who thinks of Carl as her own son, will also be emboldened after his death. She has served as Rick’s partner and conscience, and the two may embark on a quest of revenge together.

Maggie

the walking dead season 8 maggie

Maggie’s top responsibility is to protect her people. “The Widow” vows that the Hilltop will be the last stand of the all-out war, and previews show the remaining Kingdom and Alexandria survivors taking refuge there. Perhaps her pregnancy will finally begin to show as well.

Ezekiel

the walking dead season 8 ezekiel

Like Maggie, Ezekiel’s responsibility is to protect his people. With Shiva dead and the Kingdom defenseless and overrun, Ezekiel surrenders himself to the Saviors.

Dwight

the walking dead season 8 dwight

Dwight finally sided with Rick’s Militia, leading his fellow Saviors into an ambush setup up by Daryl, Tara, Rosita, and Michonne. The continue to question his loyalty but allow him to join them in the sewers. Unfortunately, his betrayal was witnessed by Lauren, who will undoubtedly tell Negan what happened. Negan will be very unhappy to learn of his top lieutenant’s betrayal and will want to take care of him personally.

Eugene

the walking dead season 8 eugene

Eugene made his choice (perhaps out of self-preservation), creating the ingenious iPod plane that led the walkers away from The Sanctuary. Although he helped Father Gabriel and Dr. Carson escape the Savior stronghold, it’s pretty clear where his loyalties lie. Short of killing Negan himself (which he’s had several opportunities to do), it’s unlikely Rick will ever welcome him back.

Morgan

Morgan is a wildcard. He gave up his pacifistic ways and became a ruthless killer, gunning down many Saviors. He was last seen hiding at the Kingdom. His character will be joining the sister show, Fear the Walking Dead, after this season. The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has said that Season 8B leads directly to Season 4 of Fear, so it’ll be interesting to see how that will play out.

The Walking Dead Season 8 returns on February 25 in the U.S., and the U.K. the following night.

Joel Taylor of Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers Dead at Age 38

The storm chasing community is reeling from the news of Joel Taylor’s sudden death. He was 38.

The Elk City, Oklahoma, native, who starred on Discovery Channel’s documentary reality television series Storm Chasers, died on Tuesday, according to his friends who shared the sad news on social media.

The cause of Joel’s death remains unclear at this time. It is not believed to be storm chasing-related.

Reps for the Discovery Channel did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

Best friend and former costar Reed Timmer dedicated a touching message to Taylor on Twitter.

“RIP my best friend and storm chasing partner, Joel Taylor. I am shocked and absolutely devastated by the loss of my incredible, caring friend,” Timmer tweeted along with photos of them when they were chasing storms together since 2008.

“We chased so many intense storms, and I wish we could have just one more storm chase. I’ll miss you forever, Joel. We lost a legend,” added Timmer, who attended the University of Oklahoma with Taylor, who studied meteorology.

Another friend, Mike Olbinski, remembered Taylor’s bright smile.

“I was lucky enough to meet Joel a few years ago at Reed’s wedding. He was so kind to me and we got to hang out for a bit during those few days,” Olbinski tweeted with a photo from the wedding. “I snapped this photo of him and that just seemed like who he was. A huge smile. RIP Joel Taylor…you will be so missed.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Taylor’s storm chasing team also expressed their condolences.

“Our community of Elk City and the Storm Chasing community lost a great guy today. Joel Taylor was truly an inspiration to myself and many who knew him. He was one of the most level headed chasers on the roads and truly a classy guy outside of chasing,” Team Western OK Chaser shared on Facebook.

“He didn’t chase for the glory he chased because he had a true passion for storms. In the last few years he’d load up with his dad and go chase and not even take a camera,” the group said. “Our hearts are hurting for his mom Tracy and dad Jimmy along with his brother and sister and their children. Please know you are in our prayers. RIP Joel.”

Storm Chasers was filmed each year in the area known as Tornado Alley due to the frequency and severity of tornadoes occurring there in the central part of the country. Several teams of storm chasers appeared in the series and Taylor joined the cast in early 2008 as part of the team from the website TornadoVideos.Net (TVN) that was led by Timmer.

The show was canceled after five seasons in January 2012.

Florida Man Arrested After Allegedly Leading Cops to Wife’s Dead Body on Day Before Christmas

A Florida man is being held on a second-degree murder charge after police say he allegedly led them to his wife’s dead body on the day before Christmas, PEOPLE confirms.

According to a news release from police in Titusville, Florida, Timothy Allen Upthegrove was already a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife, Lori Lynn Upthegrove, when he allegedly gave police information that directed them to her body early on Sunday.

Police believe Timothy, 53, killed Lori on Dec. 18 when the couple got into an argument at their home in Titusville. Then, according to allegations in the news release, “the victim’s body was placed into the back of her vehicle by her husband and driven to a wooded area.”

Police did not disclose a cause of death. A spokesperson from the Titusville Police Department tells PEOPLE that the case is still under investigation and that more details will be released at a later date.

Lori, 51, was reported missing on Tuesday by a family member.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

“Based on evidence found both in the home and in her vehicle, detectives believed Lori had been the victim of a violent crime,” police said in the release. Timothy was arrested Tuesday on charges of obstructing justice after he allegedly made false statements to police.

In a statement to the Orlando Sentinel, Timothy’s father, Ed Upthegrove, offered his condolences to Lori’s relatives and said that his family is working with law enforcement.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to Lori’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Ed told the newspaper. “We’re cooperating with investigators as they continue to gather evidence in this case.”

PEOPLE confirms that Timothy is being held in the Brevard County Jail without bail. He has not yet entered a plea, and court records do not indicate if he has retained an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

‘Alien probe’ asteroid is dead quiet, but is that good news or bad news?

oumuamua aliens

A couple of months back, a really, really weird asteroid flew through our Solar System. It looked nothing like any object humanity had ever spotted in space, and was moving might fast. First it was identified as a comet, then an asteroid, and most recently scientists have been wondering if maybe it was actually an alien spacecraft. Now, after spending hours listening to the strange visitor with powerful radio telescopes, scientists say they haven’t heard a peep.

The object, named Oumuamua, is shaped like a cigar. If it’s really an asteroid it would be the very first interstellar asteroid — that is, a rock that originated outside of our Solar System — to be observed by humans, but its bizarre form and speedy entry and exit gave alien hunters reason to believe it might actually be otherworldly technology. Now, it seems, that question will have to wait a little longer to be answered.
