Cardinals Sign Top Pick Murray To Four-Year Deal

(AP Photo)

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have signed Kyler Murray in time for their rookie minicamp.

Arizona signed the No. 1 overall draft pick to a four-year contract Thursday worth about $ 35 million with a team option for a fifth. It includes a signing bonus of more than $ 23 million.

The Cardinals also signed five other draft picks tor four-year contracts: cornerback Byron Murphy, defensive lineman Zach Allen, receiver KeeSean Johnson, offensive lineman Josh Miles and tighter end Caleb Wilson.

Murray and the rest of the draft picks will take the field for the first time Friday, when the Cardinals open a rookie minicamp.

Arizona moved up to No. 10 overall in last year’s NFL draft to select Josh Rosen, who had an up-and-down rookie season under first-year coach Steve Wilks.

The Cardinals fired Wilks and replaced him with Kliff Kingsbury, expecting the former Texas Tech coach to replicate some of the offensive successes he had in Lubbock.

The Red Raiders were among the nation’s highest-scoring teams under Kingsbury and he had two quarterbacks, Case Keenum and Patrick Mahomes, who led the nation in passing.

Instead of addressing other needs, the Cardinals used the No. 1 overall pick to take Murray, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Oklahoma they believe to be a perfect fit for Kingsbury’s “Air Raid” offense..

Murray will likely be the starter for the 2019 season opener after Rosen was traded to Miami for the 62nd overall pick — used on Massachusetts receiver Andy Isabella — and a 2020 fifth-rounder.

Murray made the most of his one season as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback, accounting for more than 5,300 yards and 53 touchdowns after backing up Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield in 2017.

An outfielder, he also became the first person to be selected in the first round of the NFL and major league baseball drafts.

The Oakland Athletics used the ninth overall pick of the 2018 MLB draft on Murray and agreed to a minor league contract with a $ 4.66 million signing bonus. The A’s had Murray’s jersey hanging in a locker at their spring training facility in Phoenix, but the two-sport star announced in February he would concentrate on football.

That left the Cardinals with a decision with the No. 1 pick and they opted to use it on Murray, who beat teams with his arm and legs in college.

Dolly Parton Signs Global Licensing Deal With IMG to Develop Fashion, Accessories and Home

HELLO DOLLY: Considering the vastness of Dolly Parton’s business ventures, the fact that IMG is now her first exclusive global licensing representative is an eye-opener.
The eight-time Grammy winner, who has been a client in North America of IMG’s partner company WME since last year, plans to delve into fashion, jewelry, accessories and home goods through the new deal. The multiyear pact is set up to help the country music star develop a lifestyle brand. But the truth is, she already is that and more. Gucci’s Alessandro Michele designed a sleeveless jean jacket emblazoned with her name and image on the back for the luxury label’s spring 2019 collection.
Aside from knowing how to make a statement on stage — wigs, sequins, bright colors and body-accentuating silhouettes — Parton also grasps what it takes to execute those ensembles. She and her creative director and wardrobe designer Steve Summers have reportedly been known to create about 300 outfits each year — down to every shoe and accessories.
Beyond her 1.8 million Instagram followers, Parton presents to IMG a built-in fan base. Five years ago, she passed the 100-million mark for records sold, and Parton continues to churn out country music, books and all kinds

The WNBA Just Signed a Deal With CBS Sports That Will Nearly Double Its National TV Exposure

(NEW YORK) — The WNBA is nearly doubling its national TV exposure with a multiyear deal with CBS Sports.

CBS Sports Network will broadcast 40 WNBA games beginning next month when the season opens. The Minnesota Lynx vs. the Chicago Sky on May 25 will be the first game on the CBS Sports Network.

“Through our partnership with CBS Sports Network, the WNBA is joining an elite lineup of premium sports programming,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “We thank CBS Sports for making such a meaningful commitment to women’s basketball and for providing another platform to showcase the world-class athletes of the WNBA.”

The league, which will begin its 23rd season on May 24, also has a deal with ESPN to show 16 regular-season telecasts, including three on ABC. Last year, the WNBA had a strong regular season with combined average viewership across ESPN2 and NBA TV up 31% over 2018.

All-Star Sue Bird and the defending WNBA Champion Seattle Storm will make six appearances on CBS Sports Network this season. That includes a WNBA Finals rematch against former league MVP Elena Delle Donne and the Washington Mystics on June 14.

The TV channel will use local broadcast feeds for now, similar to what NBA TV does for WNBA games. NBA TV showed 49 games last year. The upcoming NBA TV schedule of WNBA games has not been finalized yet.

“We are truly excited to partner with the WNBA, bringing the country’s premier women’s sports league to CBS Sports Network. This partnership is one of the biggest and most impactful women’s sports programming arrangements ever at CBS Sports, offering national exposure of 40 games per year,” said CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus. “This agreement provides great live content throughout the summer in prime time and on weekends, and aligns two great brands in the WNBA and CBS Sports. We look forward to working with the WNBA for many years to come.”

CBS executive vice president of programming Dan Weinberg said the WNBA was exactly what CBS was looking for to bolster its schedule.

“We are looking to partner with established brands that are growing with dedicated fan bases,” he said in a phone interview. “The WNBA checks every one of those boxes. (Playing in the) spring-summer lends itself to our programming schedule. We are clearly and obviously talking about the best basketball players in the world at the highest level. Associating ourselves with WNBA, it’s a great powerful established brand with popularity across the country.”

The sides are still discussing expanding the coverage to include features and other WNBA programming.

“It’s going to be beyond highlights,” said David Denenberg, who is the Senior Vice President, Global Media Distribution and Business Affairs for NBA Entertainment. “Whether it’s features we develop or CBS develops, we want to do more.”

It’s unclear how the WNBA will decide which games will air on ESPN or CBS Sports Network going forward after this year. The league didn’t seem too concerned.

“Suffice it to say we have enough games we think we’ll put together a robust schedule for everyone,” Denenberg said. “We’ll announce the CBS schedule, ESPN schedule. I think we’re going to well serve all our partners.”

Trump Administration Ends Deal Allowing Cuban Baseball Players to Directly Sign With MLB

HAVANA (AP) — The Trump administration is moving to end a deal allowing Cuban baseball players to sign contracts directly with Major League Baseball organizations. The change will once again require Cuban players to cut ties with their national program before signing with MLB.

The Treasury Department told MLB attorneys in a letter Friday that it was reversing an Obama administration decision allowing the major leagues to pay the Cuban Baseball Federation a release fee equal to 25% of each Cuban player’s signing bonus. The decision made public Monday afternoon appears to make the MLB-Cuba deal unworkable by eliminating the payment mechanism, similar to one MLB has with leagues in China, Korea and Japan.

“The U.S. does not support actions that would institutionalize a system by which a Cuban government entity garnishes the wages of hard-working athletes who simply seek to live and compete in a free society,” National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis said. “The administration looks forward to working with MLB to identify ways for Cuban players to have the individual freedom to benefit from their talents, and not as property of the Cuban state.”

The MLB and Cuba engaged in intense negotiations on a player-transfer deal through the Obama administration’s two-year effort to normalize relations with Cuba but the deal was only finalized after Donald Trump took office pledging to roll back Obama’s policy. Opponents of normalization inside and outside the administration argued for its cancellation as soon as it was announced, and appear to have now succeeded.

U.S. law prohibits virtually all payments to the Cuban government under the 60-year embargo on the island but MLB argued the Cuban Baseball Federation, which oversees all aspects of the sport on the island, was not formally a part of the Cuban state.

Opponents called that argument ridiculous given the tight control the highly regimented government maintains over virtually every aspect of life in Cuba.

The letter from the Office of Foreign Assets Control obtained by The Associated Press agrees, saying that “in light of facts recently brought to our attention, and after consultation with the U.S. Department of State, OFAC has determined that MLB’s payments to the Cuban Baseball Federation are not authorized.”

“We stand by the goal of the agreement, which is to end the human trafficking of baseball players from Cuba,” an MLB statement said.

Without a formal path from Cuba to the major leagues, hundreds of top players have left the island for good, many making harrowing crossings on rafts and rickety boats in the years before Cuba abandoned a hated exit permit requirement for most of its citizens.

While such dangerous escapes were mostly eliminated with greater travel freedoms, players still needed to cut ties with Cuban baseball and often their families and hometowns, going years without returning after signing with the major leagues.

“The deal with Major League Baseball is an attempt to stop human trafficking, encourage cooperation and elevate the level of baseball,” the Cuban Baseball Federation said on Twitter. “The politically motivated attacks on the deal hurt players, their families, and fans.”

Last week the Cuban federation released its first group of players able to sign contracts directly with Major League Baseball organizations, and some expected to be playing in the United States this year.

The 34 players were 17 to 25, classified as international amateurs under MLB rules and eligible to sign minor league contracts. No likely stars were apparent on the list, but more notable players included 22-year-old Raidel Martinez Perez and 23-year-old Liván Moinelo Pita, who have played professionally in Japan; 17-year-old infielder Loidel Chapellí Zulueta; and 18-year-old pitcher Norge Carlos Vera Aldana.

The Cuban federation also agreed to release all players 25 and older with at least six years of professional experience to be classified as international professionals under MLB’s labor contract with the players’ association and not subject to international amateur signing bonus pools.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

How to Deal with Jerks

We probably had a boss who was a jerk, maybe a neighbor, a family member, a friend, or someone else who’s close to you. I mean, frankly, we’re all jerks sometimes; if we have bad nights of sleep, maybe if we were sick, or if we just have another thing to deal with, we can all behave like a jerk, however, we’re talking more about people who are constantly and unapologetically a jerk.

The weird thing is that being a jerk is sometimes correlated to being successful. For example, Steve Jobs was a bonafide jerk yet he was very successful. So just because you’re a jerk doesn’t mean you’re automatically successful. Often, it’s the opposite.

what exactly is a jerk and how can you earn respect without being one?

In a nutshell, jerks are stubborn, they’re just full of themselves, they just care about themselves, they’re not open to criticism or change, and they’re just about winning, putting others down, and getting ahead in life no matter the cost.

Blame Bias

Interestingly when surveyed, a lot more people describe being subject to oppression of jerks rather than admitting to being one themselves. That means there are a lot of people who are jerks but they don’t think of themselves as being a jerk, this is called the blame bias. When we see behavior in others, we assume that they’re trying to be a jerk and mean about things yet when we do the exact same thing, we have different motives and we don’t think of ourselves as being a jerk, when in fact, other people assume we are. When people behave badly, they often think of it as being justified but they’re the only one thinking that way, all the others just think you’re a jerk. The bigger problem with this behavior is that it can be contagious and other people can act in the same way and then it brings down the entire community.

Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs

2 Types Of Jerks

The Clueless Jerk

Simply put, a clueless jerk is a first time offender. Dealing with a clueless jerk is easy because they actually might mean well and they simply just don’t know about it.

The Unrepentant Jerk

This jerk is downright self-centered. Unfortunately, there’s not a cooking recipe to deal with this kind, however, chances are they’re not likely or easily going to change.

When Dealing With Jerks,Make Sure You Are Not One Yourself & Take Action

Simply accepting the behavior of jerks or just letting it go is not going to make the situation better or resolve anything. You’re instead empowering the jerks to continue doing what they do because they see no obstacle in behaving that way. Jerks are often stubborn and are unlikely to change so you have to do something because that’s something you can control.

Confronting the jerk in private is the best thing to do
Confronting the jerk in private is the best thing to do

Privately Confront The “Jerk”

The best way to deal with it is to take that person aside in a private moment and address the issue. Don’t address it in front of a group where they can feel attacked or where they feel particularly vulnerable, take them aside so no one else can see it, have a word with them, and explain what you’ve seen. A clueless jerk will likely apologize, be sorry about it, and promise to change. It’s important to focus on their behavior, not them as a person, otherwise, they’re likely to shut down and not take any of your criticism.

Accept a compliment gracefully

Have A Remedy In Mind

Do not just throw something out there and expect them to come up with a solution. Again, don’t tell people what they should or should not do. Rather, share maybe an experience of a similar situation which really helped to come to a solution. That way, the clueless jerk will think they came up with a solution and because of that, they’re much more likely to act on it rather than if you tell them what they should or should not do. Now, when you’ve dealt with jerks, you probably assume that they’re not a clueless jerk because to you, it seems obvious they are unrepentant and they do it because they enjoy it but that is part of the blame bias and it’s best for you to assume that everyone is a clueless jerk and therefore, you should always, as a first step, take them aside privately and approach them in the way just described.

A Jerk boss
A Jerk boss

Consider The Power Dynamics

Also, the power dynamics in a relationship are hugely important. If the jerk is a parent or a boss and you feel powerless, it’s best to ignore those people, walk away from them, and politely decline to even engage in a conversation with them. Simply ignore them and take out the steam of their behavior that way.

Make The Change

This step applies to unrepentant jerks. It means it’s time to change for YOU. You either have to quit, transfer to a different department, or maybe end the relationship because if you address their behavior directly with your superior, chances are they’re gonna retaliate against you and make your life even worse.

Walk Away

Now, if the power dynamics are equal and it’s someone like a friend, a sibling, or a colleague, you are at the same level, you have a few different options. The one is to simply shun them, ignore them, exclude them from events, and have a certain icy politeness showing you don’t want to have anything to do with them, you don’t want to listen to them, and you don’t want to be around them.

Fight Fire With Fire

Now, this is very risky because a jerk will drag you down to their level and beat you there with experience. So if a jerk yells at you, it’s not wise to yell back but you can speak up, you can confront them, and tell them that it’s not okay. You can even do so in front of others and see if that makes a change. If it doesn’t, chances are its best simply to ignore them and again, quit that relationship or try to move in a place where you don’t have to deal with that kind of behavior. If quitting is not an option, fighting fire with fire is your only option and that unrepentant jerk really understands that language so it may lead you somewhere but be careful.

Now, what about if you have a jerk who is your employee or your subordinate? In that case, things are a lot easier. Basically, you use your power and your force to require change; you take them aside, you address the issue, you tell them what needs to happen, and if it doesn’t happen, you simply fire them and you just have to stick to that.

Do Not Give A S***

This is the most difficult one and it often requires a lot of good acting and self-discipline but ultimately, if you can show people that you don’t care either about their behavior or about them, it makes them rethink their behavior simply because a jerk wants attention and if you don’t give them attention and if you don’t give them gratification, they may deflate and maybe they’ll move on and you can stay where you are. In my opinion, it’s one of the hardest approaches because it requires a lot of willpower on your end.

CONCLUSION

Jerks are everywhere. You should always assume that if you encounter them that they’re clueless jerks, take them aside privately, tell them about it. If they still don’t correct their behavior, they are unrepentant jerks and you have the choice to deal with that; you can either shun them, ignore them, or fight fire with fire.

Travel romances: Are they the real deal?

It’s a fantasy, to be swept up off your feet in a whirlwind romance, filled with a warm breeze billowing through your hair, an ice cold drink in one hand, and your dream partner in the other. It’s a pretty common romantic trope, meeting the love of your life on an exotic holiday; but are they the real deal?

While it’s entirely plausible that you might find your soulmate meandering through the beautiful city of Paris snacking on a croissant, or adventuring the untrodden forests of Croatia before hopping in a raft down a stream, what are the chances you’ll be able to convince them to meet the family?

Spring fling or an everlasting winter?

So, perhaps winter is not the best way to describe a relationship, but you get the drift. Starting a relationship can be full of wonder, excitement, and discovery – just like exploring a country! So, it stands to reason to suggest that those rose-tinted glasses might have some particularly dark lenses. That doesn’t mean it can’t work though; it just means that, while you’ll have an amazing story to tell your future grandchildren about how you met, you might have a few more hurdles to overcome before you set your heart.

An unwitting resident or a travel companion?

There are so many ways to meet people, travel is most certainly one for broadening those horizons. However, the chances are, if you’ve fallen for someone local, they’re probably not thinking about uprooting their whole life and following you on your adventure of self-discovery. All hope is not lost, many people have found love and romance with a travel companion and the best part of that is – you definitely have something in common.

Making the first move

It all depends on how it unravels, it would be a tragedy if your soulmate got away just because you didn’t get enough time together, but sometimes you can get there in the nick of time! You never know, it could have always been destined to be that breathtaking one-time-only experience, but then again, perhaps there’s a mutual love there that can be worked through. If you don’t take the plunge, then you’ll never know.

Where do we live?

So, if you’re one of those crazy-lucky couples where it all works out, and you accidentally fell in love with someone who lives in the same country as you – good for you! Other people, however, might have to make some forward-thinking decisions about moving in together or opting for the ever-popular ‘long-distance-relationship.’ Long-distance isn’t for everyone, but if your love is strong enough, it will prevail, at least for a few years until one of you want something more and then you’ll likely have to re-think your strategy.

While travel romances can be a wonderful tale to tell and give you that warm fuzzy feeling, there are still a lot of things you need to consider. Ultimately it depends on the two people involved, how quickly the relationship develops, and the sacrifices you’re willing to make. Chances are, it’s probably going to stay a great one-off story.

Industry Rule No. 4080?: Lil Uzi Vert Wants New Record Deal

Lil Uzi Vert seen performing at Coachella weekend 2 Day 3

Source: WENN.com / WENN

Lil Uzi Vert wants out. The Philadelphia rapper and self-described rock stars isn’t happy with the current terms of his recording contract with Generation Now.

Reports TMZ:

A source familiar with his current deal tells TMZ … the rapper’s being exploited because the contract allows little room for growth and doesn’t do enough for his bottom line.

We’re told Generation Now is supposed to cover Lil Uzi’s studio time and recordings, but the label’s refusing to pony up — so he’s being forced to seek financial assistance from people close to him. Sounds like an awkward conversation.

Lil Uzi’s serious about getting out from under his contract … we’re told his side proposed an amended deal, one that’s more fair and balanced for the artist. As you might expect, the label is pushing back.

However, another source tells us Generation Now isn’t holding up the release of Uzi’s upcoming album, “Eternal Atake,” and they’re definitely NOT exploiting him — they claim he’s been in full control of the project from the jump.

As the label sees it … Uzi has a production budget for the album and he’s been recording in Philadelphia for a while, but hasn’t shared any of his work — making it difficult for the label to set release dates, or figure out marketing and promotion plans.

The drama (no pun, you’ll see why) is prickly for Hip-Hop heads because Generation Now was founded by Don Cannon and DJ Drama. The renowned DJ’s and producers did plenty for the culture as the Aphilliates.

Word is both sides are still willing to communicate, but it’s a slow roll at the moment.

Mike Trout’s Expected $432 Million MLB Deal Will Make History

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels are close to finalizing a $ 432 million, 12-year contract that would shatter the record for the largest deal in North American sports history.

The deal was disclosed Tuesday by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been finalized and had not been announced.

Trout would top the new $ 330 million, 12-year contract between Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies, and his $ 36 million average annual value would surpass Zack Greinke’s $ 34.4 million in a six-year deal with Arizona that started in 2016.

Progress toward an agreement was first reported by ESPN.

Trout’s deal includes a signing bonus and would supersede the $ 144.5 million, six-year contract that had been set to pay him $ 66.5 million over the next two seasons.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

Is Anyone Surprised? YouTube Had to Deal With an ‘Unprecedented Volume’ of Violent Videos After Christchurch Terrorist Attack

The Washington Post has reported that YouTube dealt with an “unprecedented volume” of violent videos after last week’s terrorist attack in New Zealand.

On Friday, a gunman murdered 50 worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Currently, 35 more are hospitalized with 12 in critical condition, including a 4-year-old-girl. In an appalling act of cruelty, the murders were recorded and posted to social media channels around the world. As the news unfolded, the footage spread at an alarming rate. After the weekend, Facebook has reported that they removed an astonishing 1.5 million videos of the attack in just 24 hours.

Although YouTube has not made an official statement about how many videos have been moderated, the company said they have experienced an unprecedented volume of violent content. According to The Washington Post, moderators worked through the night to remove tens of thousands of videos of the terrorist attack. In an interview with The Post, chief product officer Neal Mohan said that some uploads were altered to prevent automated tools from spotting the footage.

Reports suggest that copies of the video were being added as fast as one per second. Eventually, this drove the streaming site to disable some search options to control the problem. In addition, they also shut down some human review features to speed up the process. However, by Friday, they had no choice but to send newsworthy clips via human moderators to check for violence or disturbing imagery.

Since the shootings last week, the entire world has been united in shock and sadness. The assailant, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, appeared in court on Saturday. The Australian citizen did not make a plea, but flashed a white supremacist hand signal.
In response to the attack, US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said:

“We, too, have seen the face of such evil with attacks in places such as Charlottesville, Pittsburgh, and Charleston. And in the wake of the New Zealand tragedy, I want to make one thing very clear: We will not permit such hate in the homeland.”

However, unlike the United States, New Zealand’s government has made decisive moves to reform gun laws in the country. In a statement, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said:

“We have listened to public sentiment following Friday’s terrorist attack in Christchurch and decided to remove all semi-automatic firearms sales and parts associated.”

Meanwhile, social media giants are facing new challenges about how to moderate violent or disturbing content. While most services agree that this was an unusual incident, the spread of the Christchurch footage has led to calls for companies to do more to protect users from hateful and violent material.

William Middleton Strikes Deal With HarperCollins for Karl Lagerfeld Book

Well, that didn’t take long.
William Middleton, a former Paris bureau chief of WWD and W magazine, just signed a book deal with HarperCollins to write “an unconventional biography” of Karl Lagerfeld and how he turned himself into a cultural icon. Lagerfeld died Feb. 19.
Middleton, who met Lagerfeld in 1995, did many stories with him when he worked in Paris and developed a friendship along the way.  Middleton is the author of “Double Vision,” about the powerful art-world family headed by Dominique and John de Menil that was published last spring.
Middleton said he had proposed a book to Lagerfeld about a year ago, and the designer was not interested in delving into his past. “I don’t think the history of Karl is the most interesting part. There are some elements of his past that are interesting. But it’s really what he turned himself into that’s so fascinating. I didn’t want to do a normal biography,” he said.
Immediately after Lagerfeld died, Middleton wrote a three-page proposal and e-mailed his agent, Binky Urban at ICM. “By 9 a.m., she had me on the phone [with HarperCollins vice president and executive editor Sara Nelson] and we had a contract the next week. It all

Bryce Harper Lands History-Making $330 Million Deal with the Philadelphia Phillies

(NEW YORK) — Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a $ 330 million, 13-year contract, the largest deal in baseball history, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Thursday because the agreement is subject to a successful physical.

A 26-year-old All-Star outfielder, Harper topped the $ 325 million, 13-year agreement outfielder Giancarlo Stanton reached before the 2015 season with the Miami Marlins.

Harper’s agreement, first reported by the MLB Network, tops the previous high for a free agent, set last week when infielder Manny Machado signed a $ 300 million, 10-year deal with the San Diego Padres. Harper’s average annual value of $ 25.4 million ranks 14th in baseball history, well below the high of $ 31.4 million set by Arizona pitcher Zack Greinke as part of a $ 206.5 million, six-year contract that started in 2016.

Harper gets a $ 20 million signing bonus, a $ 10 million salary this year, $ 26 million in each of the following nine seasons and $ 22 million in each of the last three years. None of the money is deferred.

Philadelphia has been among the most active teams this offseason, adding outfielder Andrew McCutchen for $ 50 million over three years and reliever David Robertson for $ 23 million over two years, and acquiring catcher J.T. Realmuto and shortstop Jean Segura.

After leading their division in early August, the Phillies went 16-33 over the final 49 games of last season and at 80-82 finished with a losing record for the sixth straight season.

San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers had also pursued Harper in recent weeks.

Harper has been an All-Star in six of seven big league seasons for the Washington Nationals and was the unanimous winner of the 2015 NL MVP award.

An up-and-down defender and an unusual mix of popular and polarizing, Harper is known for the occasional contretemps with opponents, one particular exchange with a reporter about a “clown question,” and, most infamously, a dugout dustup in which he was choked by then-teammate Jonathan Papelbon during a game.

Washington took him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft and called him up to the majors less than two years later at age 19. He would go on to become the 2012 NL Rookie of the Year for a Nationals club that won its first division title and made its postseason debut.

Harper was also an integral part of the team that added NL East titles in 2014, 2016 and 2017 and never finished lower than second place in his seven seasons. Another key stat, though: The Nationals never won a playoff series in that span.

His best year was 2015, when at age 22 he hit .330 with 42 homers, 99 RBIs, 118 runs and 124 walks, amassing an OPS of 1.109.

Last year, he hit 34 homers and produced a career-high 100 RBIs while walking 130 times, although his batting average dipped to .249. He started more than a third of his games in center field instead of his usual spot in right, because of injuries to teammates.

With Washington’s Nationals Park hosting the 2018 All-Star Game, Harper stole the show the day before the Midsummer Classic by winning the Home Run Derby before an ecstatic crowd filled with folks wearing his No. 34 Nationals jersey. Harper wore a headband with the D.C. flag’s design, reflecting his oft-stated pride in playing for Washington.

But that eventually ran its course. The Nationals made an offer toward the end of last season — a $ 300 million, 10-year contract that was no longer on the table after free agency opened without an agreement.

A year after going 82-80 and missing the playoffs under rookie manager Dave Martinez, the Nationals will move forward without Harper.

Washington general manager Mike Rizzo would have loved to keep Harper in his team’s lineup but didn’t sit around and wait to find out whether that would happen. Instead, Rizzo spent such money elsewhere, adding lefty starter Patrick Corbin on a $ 140 million deal and righty starter Anibal Sanchez, along with second baseman Brian Dozier, a pair of catchers in Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki and two key bullpen pieces in Trevor Rosenthal and Kyle Barraclough.

Harsh Realms And Deal Sleds

Even worse than being out of touch is knowing people think of you as out of touch. In 1992, a reporter for the New York Times wrote a story for the Styles section on the rise of grunge culture. It’s a relatively straightforward chronology of how elements of sound and style came together to form what a Sub Pop Records catalog first referred to as “grunge,” and traces grunge’s path “from subculture to mass culture.” Most of the points the piece makes have been generally accepted as fact for years; it doesn’t seem to be riddled with errors. Although it does refer to Trent Reznor’s band as “the Nine Inch Nails” — which would make any NIN fan snicker.

But one oversight made the article a famous example of the over-eagerness of outsiders to understand a subculture’s slang. The piece was accompanied by a sidebar with the heading “Lexicon of Grunge: Breaking the Code.” According to the Baffler, the slang was made up on the spot by Sub Pop employee Megan Jasper and fed to the reporter as a prank — a Gen X middle finger to an establishment that was co-opting its teen spirit.

Cut to recently, when I stumbled on some slang previously unfamiliar to me, slang that I guess everyone knew already, making me possibly more out of touch than the NYT grunge correspondent: Some people call bit loafers–specifically Gucci loafers–“deal sleds.” The etymology and true meaning of the phrase are not totally clear. It’s largely used on social media and forums for guys who work in finance. The Urban Dictionary entry for “deal sleds” is from 2010. On a cursory search, I found blog and social media references as far back as 2011. According to Google Trends, interest was negligible until 2012 or so and spiked in 2018.

Whatever the origin, the gist is that bit loafers are what you wear when you want to close a deal,  expect to close a deal, or at least want to give the impression you expect to close a deal. The deal in question could be work-related, or, erm, personal. A quick poll of a New York office by twitter user @jammy_sod, who works in finance, was inconclusive: “The main reference is to a work deal but the junior staff, who aspire to be like the real deal-makers, wear them to show that they could do both.” Deal sleds are adjacent to the idea of the Midtown Uniform.

Whether clients or potential hookups really notice your $ 500+ shoes? For that, I have no data. I know that I like them, and we’ve recommended them (with reservations) in the past, but I am not generally in the business of closing deals, unless you mean accepting low-ball offers on Grailed.

It got me thinking about slang thrown around in menswear circles (fit, jawnz, drip — the most versed would likely be Lawrence Schlossman of menswear argot bibles like Fuck Yeah, Menswear, Four Pins, and Grailed). And bullshit slang, and, eventually, what would I feed a reporter who asked about language in menswear.

Marsai Martin Becomes The Youngest Person To Have First-Look Deal At Universal

We’ve said it before, and we’re going to say it again: Black girls really are magic.

A month after the trailer for her upcoming comedy “Little” dropped, 14-year-old Black-ish actress Marsai Martin has just signed a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Martin will develop scripted projects for Universal alongside Joshua Martin (co-founder), Carol Martin (vice president) and Prince Baggett (head of creative).

Even better? Marsai is making history with this move: She’s the youngest person to get a first-look deal at Universal or an major studio.

Peter Cramer, president, Universal Pictures, told THR that Marsai is definitely “a star on the rise” who is “brilliant.”

“Working with emerging talent is a cornerstone of Universal’s overall slate strategy, and Marsai is a star on the rise,” he said.

Adding, “She is not only tremendously talented in front of the camera but offers a unique perspective as a creator and producer that will resonate with all audiences. We look forward to moviegoers getting to see how brilliant she is in Little and watching her evolve as a filmmaker here at Universal.”

“I am so excited for the magic I’ll be able to create and produce with Universal,” Marsai said.

“Mr. Cramer and Ms. [Donna] Langley’s commitment to investing in and uplifting diverse and young voices is both refreshing and important, and I’m happy to be a part of that legacy. My goal is to show young women and girls that our voices and ideas matter and you are never too young to dream BIG!”

So what’s up next for her?

THR writes that Marsai will star in StepMonster, a comedy about a teenage girl (Martin) who is adjusting to life with a new stepmother and has to learn that sometimes the only way to tame a monster is to make peace with it (especially if the monster is you).

As we previously reported, Marsai became the youngest executive producer in Hollywood with her highly anticipated film “Little.”

Little, which also stars Issa Rae and Regina Hall, centers on a insufferable tech mogul, Jordan Sanders, who wakes up as the 13-year-old version of herself.

Martin plays a young Sanders while Regina Hall is perfect as the adult exec who tortures her employees, including April (Issa Rae). Jordan and April bond as the roles are reversed and April finds herself bossing around her younger, older boss.

Little, an idea from Martin who was inspired by Tom Hanks’ body-swapping classic Big, makes Martin the youngest Black executive producer in Hollywood.

Brits don’t like Theresa May’s Brexit deal. But they still admire her grit.

There was the head-spinning, cross-party, total defeat of the prime minister’s Brexit deal. Then the inglorious rescue of her government. At the center of the chaos, May still stands. Scholars of British politics cannot quite believe it. No leader before has survived such a parliamentary drubbing, described by many as “the worst in history.” But May has. How?

Why Sunday’s AFC Championship Game Is a Bigger Deal for Patrick Mahomes Than Tom Brady

It’s been a bounce-back season for the NFL. Scoring is up, with the four most offensively potent teams in the league — the Kansas City Chiefs, the Los Angeles Rams, the New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots — reaching the conference championship round. Pro football feels fun again. Defense wins championships? Bollocks. After a down year in 2017, TV ratings have risen.

So it’s only fitting that in a bullish year for football, fans are treated with one particularly dreamy matchup on conference championship Sunday, Jan. 20. That’ll be when the Kansas City Chiefs, led by their stunningly talented second-year quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, host the House of Brady, the New England Patriots, in the AFC title game. (The New Orleans Saints play the Los Angeles Rams in the Big Easy in Sunday’s other matchup.)

The Mahomes-Brady duel counts as nothing less than an intergenerational battle for the heart and soul of the NFL. Hyperbole? Maybe. It’s just sports, though, so let’s run with it.

As NFL playoff games go, the stakes are serious. Brady, the only quarterback who owns five Super Bowl trophies, has set new standards for football excellence. His quinoa and avocado ice cream diet, irritating though it may be, is paying off: at 41, he’s playing in a record eighth straight conference championship. On the home side of the ball, Mahomes is football’s version of Stephen Curry. Clips of his “are you friggin’ kidding me” plays — throws with his weak hand, and sidearm, and across his body and without looking and on the run — light up the internet, like Curry’s ridiculous three-pointers. This season Mahomes, 23, became just the second-ever quarterback to throw for at least 5,000 yards and throw at least 50 TD passes in the same season. Only Mahomes, Brady, and Peyton Manning have ever thrown 50 or more TD passes in a single season.

One quarterback has been the face of the game for over a decade. With a win, the other can expedite his quest to succeed him. The NFC championship game, between the Saints and Rams, similarly pits an aging inevitable Hall of Famer against a budding star. New Orleans’ Drew Brees, who just turned 40, is a Super Bowl champion who this season surpassed the elder Manning brother’s all-time record for career passing yards; Brees now has 74,437 compared to Manning’s 71,940. Goff’s a bonafide franchise QB who’s turned in some eye-popping performances, such as his 465 yard, five touchdown game against the Minnesota Vikings on a Thursday night, on three days’ rest, in September. He had a perfect passer rating that night.

Still, Brees-Goff doesn’t carry the same sizzle as Brady-Mahomes. One’s not generally considered the best of all time. The other’s not already setting all-time records.

Brady would seem to be facing more pressure on Sunday. Time’s going to run out on him at some point. This could be his last chance to win a sixth Super Bowl. Mahomes, meanwhile, is just starting out. If he misses this opportunity, he’ll surely get back, right?

Except nothing’s quite that certain, especially in the NFL. This game is more of a must-win for Mahomes. Kansas City finished the regular season with a better record than New England, owns home-field advantage, and boasts superior firepower on its roster. The oddsmakers list KC as the favorites. Brady’s legend is already secure. Mahomes, as good as he is, could catch some bad breaks going forward. Maybe injury. Maybe the team turns over. With its salary cap structure, the NFL’s economic model breeds parity. So maybe another team emerges, aside from the Chiefs, in the ensuring years. Bill Belichick has somehow hacked the NFL, and keeps constructing teams that contend for a championship. Odds are long that Kansas City does the same.

Dan Marino reached the Super Bowl when he was 23; Joe Montana’s San Francisco 49ers crushed his Miami Dolphins, and Marino never made it back. In 2012 Colin Kaepernick, at 25, shook up the NFL and reached a Super Bowl, coming a few yards short of potentially winning. (Ironically, Kaepernick displaced Alex Smith as the starter in San Francisco, as Mahomes did in Kansas City six years later.) Former ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski gushed that Kaepernick “could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever.” But inconsistency, injuries, and controversy derailed Kaepernick. Sure, Mahomes’ 2018 season was statistically far superior to Kaepernick’s initial burst. Mahomes is a better quarterback, and seems unlikely to champion causes that turn ownership against him. But you can’t entirely dismiss Kaeperick as a cautionary tale.

Or look at Russell Wilson. In just his third season, at age 26, he was a Marshawn Lynch one-yard TD run away from joining the pantheon of great quarterbacks to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles (Brady, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman and Terry Bradshaw, to name a few). Then Seattle coach Pete Carroll called a pass play. Malcolm Butler picked off Wilson. A potential Seattle dynasty fizzled. Wilson’s far from a lock to return to an NFC championship game, lest a Super Bowl.

Football is fleeting. A Brady-Brees old guy Super Bowl carries sentimental value. But Rams-Chiefs would be utterly delightful, a rematch of one of the best regular season games ever, a wild Monday Night air show that Los Angeles won 54-51. More than any other game this season, that one marked a rejuvenated NFL. The future’s now. Mahomes and Goff just now have to grab it.

No pressure.

Correction, Jan. 18

The original version of this story misstated the conference in which Russel Wilson plays. It is the NFC, not the AFC.

4 Ways to Deal if You Want to Be Debt-Free but Your Partner Keeps Spending

When you get married or combine finances with someone, you may think that tackling debt will be easier than doing it on your own.

Then you find out your partner has no intention of paying off debt or being involved with finances.

Cool.

But if this is you, don’t worry. Just because the love of your life isn’t driven to get rid of debt right now, it doesn’t mean they never will be.

I admit that I wasn’t on board with paying off debt when my then-fiance “suggested” it to me.

I came from a background where we always had money to pay the bills but never enough for anything else. So when I was finally making my own money, I wanted to use it to live, not to pay my $ 52,000 of student loan debt.

But many people overcome their aversions to paying off debt and end up being just as motivated as their significant other.

Here are some tips for bridging that gap.

4 Strategies for When Your Partner Doesn’t Care About Being Debt-Free

These tips may not speed up the journey, but they are the best way to get to freedom from debt if you don’t want to sleep on the couch the whole way.

1. Slow Down and Rethink Your Approach

If the fact that your partner doesn’t want to think about finances frustrates you, sit down, take a deep breath and think about why.

A lot of people have negative emotions and experiences tied to money.

Talking about finances can be a trigger for someone whose parents fought about money. If someone never had enough money for small pleasures growing up, they might go into defense mode if you tell them you want to stop spending money and sell their stuff.

And the thought of debt itself can be a heavy mental burden, especially when life is throwing more problems into the mix. It takes time, persistence and understanding to find out what the root of your partner’s hesitation is and how to work through it.

2. Talk About the Future

Couple holding hands

My husband knows that I’m a goal-driven person, so he asked me what my goals for the future were. He got me thinking about how freedom from debt could help me achieve my goals faster.

Make sure your partner’s goals and wants are heard. Share your own wants, and talk about how your goals and your partner’s goals can work together. Your partner may not have concrete goals right now, but they surely have something they want. Maybe they want to travel, buy a boat, stay at home with kids or pursue a passion.

Anything they want to do in the future is going to have a financial component. And once you’ve identified it, you’ll be able to sit down and talk about that. But as with the first recommendation, take it slowly.

3. Plan a Road Trip

If your partner will no longer listen to you about finances, don’t force it.

They still need to hear it, just not from you. That’s where podcasts and audiobooks can come in for the assist. And there’s no better way to have your partner’s uninterrupted ear than playing them in the car.

That’s how Budgets Made Easy creator Ashley Patrick was able to get her husband on board.

“I attempted budget meetings, but he wasn’t interested,” Ashley said. “He was content letting me handle it all. The biggest thing that fully got him on board was playing Dave Ramsey podcasts in the car. Especially when I did it on a long road trip. Hours of Dave Ramsey helped change his mindset.”

She and her husband paid off $ 45,000 in 17 months, and Ashley now provides financial coaching through Dave Ramsey’s Ramsey Solutions.

4. Be an Example They’ll Want to Follow

While you’re waiting for your partner to join the team, make sure they know what the game looks like.

You can continue to budget, pay off debt and be wise with your spending even if your partner isn’t. Sometimes they just need to see that it can be done.

As you do this, take into consideration what they value and want. Maybe you think Topgolf is a waste of money, but your husband loves going once a month. Put it in the budget to show him that the process is only as restrictive as you make it.

At the end of the day, being debt-free isn’t the goal: having financial freedom is. And if you want your partner to be part of that, it might take some patience and perseverance. But it’s worth it — not just financially — to get on the same page and head in the same direction with your goals.

Daniel Murphy agrees to two-year, $24 million deal with Colorado Rockies

Veteran infielder Daniel Murphy has agreed in principle to a deal with the Colorado Rockies, according to multiple reports. The deal is for two years and $ 24 million, as first reported by Yahoo Sports. Murphy has spent the bulk of his career at second base, where the Rockies are looking to replace fellow free agent DJ LeMahieu. But Murphy is expected to play mostly at first base for Colorado. After two outstanding seasons with the Nationals, Murphy, who turns 34 in April, was traded to the playoff-contending Chicago Cubs three weeks after last season’s non-waiver deadline for Class A infielder Andruw Monasterio and a player to be named or cash. A three-time All-Star who finished second in 2016 National League MVP voting, Murphy missed the first 64 games of last season while recovering from microfracture surgery on his right knee in October 2017. Trump’s Art of the Russia Deal: Give Vladimir Putin a Penthouse
