IBM Debuts Tools to Help Prevent Bias In Artificial Intelligence

IBM wants to help companies mitigate the chances that their artificial intelligence technologies unintentionally discriminate against certain groups like women and minorities.

The technology giant’s tool, announced on Wednesday, can inspect AI-powered software for unintentional bias when it makes decisions, like when a loan might be denied to a particular person, explained Ruchir Puri, the chief technology officer and chief architect of IBM Watson.

The technology industry is increasingly combating the problem of bias in machine learning systems, used to power software that can automatically recognize images in pictures or translate languages. A number of companies have suffered a public relations black eye when their technologies failed to work as well for minority groups as for white users.

For instance, researchers discovered that Microsoft and IBM’s facial-recognition technology could more accurately identify the faces of lighter-skin males than darker-skin females. Both companies said they have since improved their technologies and have reduced error rates.

Researchers have pointed out that some of the problems may be related to the use of datasets that contain a lack of diverse images. Joy Buolamwini, the MIT researcher who probed Microsoft and IBM’s facial-recognition tech (along with China’s Megvii), recently told Fortune‘s Aaron Pressman that a lack of diversity within development teams could also contribute to bias because more diverse teams could be more aware of bias slipping into the algorithms.

In addition to IBM, a number of companies have introduced or plan to debut tools for vetting AI technologies. Google, for instance, revealed a similar tool last week while Microsoft said in May that it planned to release similar technology in the future.

Data crunching startup Diveplan said at Fortune’s recent Brainstorm Tech conference that it would release an AI-auditing tool later this year while consulting firm Accenture unveiled its own AI “fairness tool” over the summer.

Read More for an In-Depth Look: Unmasking A.I.’s Bias Problem

It’s unclear how each of these AI bias tools compare with one another because no outside organization has done a formal review.

Get Data Sheet, Fortune’s technology newsletter.

Puri said IBM’s tool built on the company’s cloud computing service is differentiated partly because it was created for business people and is easier to work with than similar tools from others that are intended only for developers.

Despite the flood of new AI-auditing tools, the problem of AI and bias will likely continue to persist because rooting out bias from AI is still in its infancy.

‘What Goes Around’ Successfully Debuts in Kern County

After completing its first year of implementing the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Educational Theatre performance on preventing sexually transmitted diseases, the Kern High School District declared the effort a big success.

“The response all around has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Ryan Geivet, director of instruction, KHSD, of the live production, “What Goes Around.” “This project has been a great experience for the district and the students.”

“What Goes Around” has been educating Southern California youth for the past decade, with more than 60,000 high schoolers experiencing the performance annually. As a result of collaborative efforts led by Kristin Weber, Kaiser Permanente’s community health manager for Kern County, and representatives from KHSD, Kern County Public Health Services and Educational Theatre, the district recently gave it the green light. The STD-prevention message is especially important to share in Kern County, where STD rates rank among the top in the state.

“The main goals of the program are to educate students about STDs to help them make informed decisions if they choose to be sexually active, and to help bridge them to medical testing and treatment if needed,” said Gerry Farrell, director, Educational Theatre.

The district’s curriculum now includes a more comprehensive sex education program to align with state requirements mandated by the California Healthy Youth Act. The expanded curriculum, combined with the Educational Theatre performance, reinforces the students’ learning, whether it’s how to put on a condom or that abstinence is the only risk-free option.

“’What Goes Around’ is in line with the world our kids are living in right now,” said Geivet. “You have to make things fun and entertaining to keep them interested. This production brings their curriculum to life.”

Increasing STD awareness

“What Goes Around” emphasizes in a hip, noncritical way how STDs such as chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, HPV and the human immunodeficiency virus can be contracted through unprotected sex.

The engaging story focuses on five friends as they navigate the final days of high school. When one of them contracts two sexually transmitted diseases, the issues of honesty and friendship cause them to question their relationships with each other and to consider their past and future choices. Using social media technology, comedy and music, the hour-long production highlights the facts and myths about STDs. At the end of the performance, students are encouraged to ask the actor-health educators questions.

This is the first time Educational Theatre is providing a program to an entire school district. During the 2017-2018 school year, “What Goes Around” debuted in November and March to 10,206 juniors and seniors at 12 of KHSD’s 23 comprehensive and alternative high schools. Hundreds of students asked questions either after the performance or via social media.

In addition, on March 22, Kaiser Permanente leadership from its national and Southern California regional community health department met in Bakersfield with other local leaders to discuss critical health issues, including record-high STD rates. The group also saw a special “What Goes Around” performance at Mira Monte High School. Following the show, about 75 student leadership and Avid program students attended a panel presentation on health care careers.

Moving forward

This coming school year, juniors and seniors at the district’s other 11 schools also are scheduled to see “What Goes Around.” Similar to last year, parents will be invited to preview the performance at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Bakersfield High School.

Based on the positive feedback and need for resources to help address the high STD occurrences in Kern County, Kaiser Permanente community health, Educational Theatre and district representatives are developing a three-year “What Goes Around” plan beginning in the 2019-2020 school year.

“We’re picking up speed now with all this – we’re just getting going,” said Geivet.

Kern County Ranks Near Top for Multiple STD Rates

A record number of STDs were reported in California in 2017, according to a recent report from the California Department of Public Health.

More than 300,000 cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and early syphilis were reported in the state – a 45 percent increase compared to five years ago. There were also 30 stillbirths due to congenital syphilis reported in California in 2017, the highest number reported since 1995.

In Kern County, 2017 STD rates were up from 2016 and ranked near the top in California for:

  • Chlamydia (No. 3)
  • Congenital syphilis (No. 2)
  • Early syphilis (No. 4)
  • Gonorrhea (No.4)

‘Westworld’ Debuts a New India-Themed Park

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from the Westworld Season 2 episode “Virtù e Fortuna.” Proceed with caution.

This week’s episode of Westworld definitely picked up the pace from the last two episodes. Not only did the series finally reveal a new world, but it also showcased an all out war against Dolores and her men. Peter Abernathy also resurfaced in this episode, with both Dolores and Charlotte desperate to find and save him. Teddy also had a moment of “virtue” where he defied one of Dolores’ direct orders. Let’s jump into some of the best moments from the episode:

Welcome to Bengal Tiger World

Westworld New Land

This week’s episode opened with our first glimpse of a new world. This world seems to be based on India. Some theories suggest this could be Raj World — Raj refereeing to the time of British sovereignty in India. The hosts and guests were dressed in the traditional hunting clothes of the British/Indian safari. Two new characters met, tested each other to see if they were human and host, and set out on their hunt.

The new female character noticed that something was off right away when no hosts were there to great them on their hunt. A rogue host killed the man and a Bengal tiger almost killed her. The tiger chased her right over the edge of a cliff and into the water. This could be how the Bengal tiger washed up on the opposite side of the shore in the Season 2 premiere. The woman did survive, but not for long.

The time between this Bengal tiger escaping and Bernard finding it on the shore should be 10 days. We briefly saw that day again, when Bernard and Charlotte reunited, but the rest of this episode seems to take place on Day 2 or Day 3 of the purge.

The Reunions Continue

Westworld Dolores Bernard

Last week’s episode, which was titled “Reunions,” featured a lot of characters re-connecting again, like Dolores and Maeve, Dolores and young William, and Dolores and Logan. This week, however, also featured two more very powerful reunion moments: Dolores found her father, Peter Abernathy. Peter was killed during the very first episode of Westworld. When Dolores found him in this episode, she shed many tears upon seeing him again.

Peter Abernathy is the reason Dolores was put on her current journey when he said to her, “these violent delights have violent ends.” While he remembered her for a moment, he began to stutter and lose grip of himself. What Dolores didn’t know when she found him was that his systems were full of information, information that Charlotte put into him.

Dolores also reunited with Bernard during this episode. Dolores took Bernard to Abernathy, to see if he could fix him. This led to a very interesting conversation between them about the world outside the park. As we saw last week, Dolores remembers being outside — Bernard, however, doesn’t know that world yet.

When Bernard hacked into Abernathy’s systems, he found Charlotte’s hidden files. Bernard lost Abernathy however when the Delos team came for him at Dolores’ protected fort. Charlotte escaped with Abernathy, which put Dolores on a new quest to find him. Abernathy is now the most important host in the park, for both Dolores and Delos.

Teddy’s Choice

Westworld Teddy Dolores

Over the last few episodes, Teddy has been more and more reluctant to follow Dolores’ death orders. He isn’t quite sure who or what he is, but he is discovering his own voice, just like Dolores has found hers. During this episode, Teddy was ordered to shot a group of unarmed men — men who just helped Dolores survive a Delos incursion. Teddy refused to do it, which proves that he may not be #TeamDolores for the entire season.

Next Week On Westworld

Westworld Maeve

The final shot of the episode featured Maeve, Hector, Lee and Armistice exploring the Klondike storyline at the edge of the Westworld park. While trudging through the snow, they encountered a Samurai swordsman. This is the storyline fans have been waiting for since the first footage of Samurai World dropped over the summer. Hopefully next week’s episode will take Maeve fully into Samurai World.

Westworld is currently airing on HBO.

Kim Kardashian Debuts New Beaded Braids in Yet Another Underwear-Clad Mirror Selfie

From a new baby girl to a new hairstyle, Kim Kardashian West has revealed the latest change in her life.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians reality star, 37, debuted her beaded braids on Snapchat and Instagram Story Friday in a mirror selfie video to the tune of pregnant sister Khloé Kardashian‘s ex-boyfriend French Montana’s 2013 single “Pop That” featuring Rick Ross.

Though she did not say a word in the footage, Kardashian West showed off her new look by swaying slightly on the bed in what appeared to be a motel room.

The mother of three posed up in a plunging white long sleeve shirt and a pair of color-coordinated underwear while holding a landline telephone in one hand and a cell phone in the other, recording herself.

The reality star’s blonde locks were braided back in cornrows against her head and each braid was finished off with white beads.

Kardashian West has previously been criticised and accused of cultural appropriation for wearing her hair in “boxer braids”.

The photo comes a day after the KKW Beauty mogul shared a bathroom mirror wearing only a pair of sparkling panties, while carefully covering her chest with her arms.

In addition, Kardashian West’s braids may be the latest alternative to handle the upkeep of her icy platinum blonde hair, which she previously called super “high maintenance.” (Kim spends 13+ hours with her hairstylist Chris Appleton touching up her roots!)

Also this week, the star quickly shut down the rumor she had returned to brunette, clarifying the reason why her hair may have appeared to be a bit darker.

“No it’s just wet and slicked back but good observation lol,” the star tweeted back to the fan who voiced a suspicion about Kardashian West’s hair in a video of herself baking blueberry muffins on Snapchat.

Alton Glass Debuts New Virtual Reality Film at American Black Film Festival (ABFF)

Alton Glass (Image: File)

Back in 2014, Alton Glass’ groundbreaking drama CRU made history at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Independent Film Awards when it took home a win in each category it was nominated for, including Best Film and Best Director. Three years later, the award-winning filmmaker returned to the annual festival to break new ground yet again with his virtual reality movie, A Little Love, which premiered Saturday, June 17, 2017.

The story of A Little Love explores the themes of love, family, and adventure, and stars actors Kellita Smith and Dorien Wilson. Watch Glass summarize the plot of the film in the video clip below:

Although the majority of the films screened at ABFF were shot via a standard camera, Glass’ VR film uses a combination of live-action and animation footage to leverage innovative VR technology in a way that completely immerses viewers in a 360° experience. In turn, this enables the audience to feel part of the narrative itself.

“Seeing the audience watch A Little Love for the first time was really awesome,” Glass says, in an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE.“They were looking all around, laughing, and just fully transported into this experience. I think that this was something very different for them to experience at a film festival [and] at ABFF, and I think that they loved it.”

A post shared by Alton Glass (@altonglasscru) on

Along with providing the audience with an exclusive VR experience, the accompanying panel included a Q&A about the convergence of technology, media, and entertainment, which featured Glass as well as VR experts and television executives. During the talkback session, Glass opened up about being one of the few African American pioneers in the VR filmmaking landscape.  He also spoke about his decision to explore VR filmmaking, after directing a number of highly acclaimed movies like The Confidant (2010), starring Boris Kodjoe and David Banner; and The Mannsfield 12 (2007), which was acquired by BET.

“What inspired me to create a narrative in virtual reality like this, was being able to see someone like myself—for people of color or diversity—inside of an experience in virtual reality,” Glass says. “I’ve never seen anything where I felt like I was there—[in the film]— with people that looked like me. So, I felt compelled to make that piece.”

The celebrated director also explained why he chose to premiere his VR movie during the five-day festival. “It was important for me to debut this film at ABFF because one, ABFF has very supportive throughout my career,” Glass says, also adding that secondly, A Little Love is one of the first VR films to feature people of color.
