The Playlist – December 2018

Music is a little like food and clothes. These are areas where it’s probably worthwhile for one to explore & expand their tastes. The Playlist is assembled each month by Dappered’s very own music correspondent, Tim Johnstone. Tim is a former Virgin Records Label Rep & current award winning Program Director at KRVB, which was awarded the FMQB AAA station of the year markets 50+. You can also catch his work on Fridays when he assembles the Weekend Reset. Got a Spotify account? You’ll find a link to this month’s playlist at the end of the post.

There are numerous types of holiday songs. The break your heart beautiful. The over the top pop showstopper. The quiet, lovely Winterlude. And this is not a surprise since holiday songs were always pop culture touch stones. Then there are the Holiday love songs which are everywhere. This year’s December playlist has selections from all of the above.

JD McPherson – “All The Gifts I Need”

I’m already on the record as a big fan of JD and his new Christmas album. It is just a blast right out of the gate and it doesn’t let up. These aren’t all songs about making merry and bright. Sometimes the Holidays suck and you get some of that too, delivered with a terrific sense of humor and a knack for big, memorable hooks.

Kelly Clarkson – “Christmas Eve”

This relentlessly cheerful Holiday song from Kelly Clarkson was released last year. And there’s a chance I recommended it last year. But there is absolutely no chance that I care about repeating it here. It’s just too fun to forget. It is all of the heightened energy of that first peek at the tree on Christmas morning, the promise of all the fun to come, and the joy of the season all crammed into a showstopper of a song.

Old 97’s – “Snow Angels”

Rhett Miller and The Old 97’s have been consistently made terrific Americana/Alt-Country for a good while now. Rhett released a solo record not that long ago and now the band has shared their first original Holiday collection. There is much to like here and if you are already a fan of Rhett and The Old 97’s this is for you.

Ingrid Michaelson – “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (featuring Leslie Odom Jr)

Whereupon Ingrid does the most Ingrid thing imaginable to Mariah Carey’s perennial favorite. Yes, this is a compliment.

A Fine Frenzy – “Red Ribbon Foxes”

Some of the songs included in this year’s playlist aren’t actually new. But they are deserving of attention. I met Allison Sudol (AKA A Fine Frenzy) just after she released her debut single with Virgin Records sometime in 2007. She stopped by the station to play in our performance lounge. It was obvious to those of us who were there that she is supremely talented. We played several of her singles over the next couple years and were fans of her Christmas ep which included “Red Ribbon Foxes.” But you might already be familiar with her via her screen work. In particular, her role as Queenie Goldstein in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Yep. Same woman. And I still love this.

Kasey Musgraves – “Present Without A Bow” featuring Leon Bridges

I’m not sure how I missed this one. It has been really something watching Kacey Musgraves’ evolution as a songwriter/performer since her debut. Her most recent album is pretty much one of the best of the year (not me – real critics have expressed this). This Holiday album is from a couple years back and it is a fun collection of original songs, favorites of the season and a few nicely chosen less-covered Christmas songs.

Aloe Blacc – “I Got Your Christmas Right Here”

Aloe Blacc just seems like the most chill man in music. He makes what he does seem effortless and maybe it is for him. This is a perfect example of what he does best. It’s a feel-good song that begs you to just stop and enjoy the season.

Low – “Just Like Christmas”

Here’s where I admit I have all the feels for this song. I am not proud of the fact that I came to it via Snow Patrol but there you are. I love both versions. This is definitely one of those Holiday songs that is lovely and kind of sad at the same time. Like I said. The feels.

David Archuleta – “Christmas Every Day”

If you would have asked me two weeks ago if I’d ever include David Archuleta on a Dappered playlist, I would have snorted like a smug douchenozzle. I’m still an asshat but damn if this song doesn’t just insist on making you a little less cynical about the world we live in. It is nearly unrivaled in it’s cheerfulness and good vibes and it will make your heart grow two sizes and such. So, yeah. Way to go David.

John Legend – “What Christmas Means To Me” featuring Stevie Wonder

Anyone else kind of surprised we are only getting this now? Doesn’t it feel like John Legend must have surely released a holiday collection before now? This one could very well be a classic.

Rogue Wave – “Christmas”

Not new. But it’s a gem for sure. Rogue Wave covered this Who song (from their rock-opera “Tommy”) and because it is Rogue Wave, they infuse the song with that sweet and sad spirit that makes up so much of their own music. Everything about this arrangement helps take a song out of its original context and lets it live on its own. Absolutely lovely.

The Mavericks – “I Have Wanted You For Christmas”

Raul Malo and his band of honky tonk brethren are no strangers to Holiday songs. Malo released his own Holiday collection years ago and it is worth checking out. Everything The Mavericks do has a retro feel which is a result of their use of instruments popular in Tejano music. This is one of those “Christmas song masquerading as a love song” Holiday songs.

Over The Rhine – “Here It Is”

Here we have an example of the holiday LOVE song. As in framing the love song in a holiday song. As in this is really just a fantastic song that is dressed up for the season. This Cincinnati band has made Christmas songs a regular part of their discography. This is one of my favorites. There is something special about this song: it is absolutely genuine, and Karin Bergquist’s vocals are something to behold.

Leslie Odom Jr. – “Winter Song”

Whereupon one of the sweetest vocalists working today absolutely shines on this cover of Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Bareilles’ beautiful Christmas song. This is just one song from a fantastic collection that came out last year.

Phoebe Bridges – “Christmas Song”

Phoebe Bridgers is having a really good year. Along with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, Bridgers released an excellent ep under the moniker boygenius. Late last year she released her debut album “Stranger In The Alps” to critical acclaim. This new holiday recording is a cover of a song by Omaha, Nebraska band McCarthy Trenching (they have quite the story about their name by the way). The story goes that Bridgers performed the song at a Holiday show last year and Jackson Browne was in the audience. Phoebe asking him to sing on a studio version and this is the result.

Lindsey Stirling – “Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy”

I can’t think of a Holiday song better suited for Stirling’s talents. Merry and bright indeed.

5 Games We Can’t Wait to Play This December

Winter is officially here. Now’s the perfect time to bundle up in a blanket, get something warm to drink, and play some video games. While there are a couple of highly anticipated titles coming in December, and a few eyebrow-raisers, the last month of the year is light on new releases.

This eclectic month in games will feature new installments in long-running and beloved series, a spiritual successor to a series gaining ground in the public eye once more, a long overdue remake, and a ridiculous number of rhythm games. In the season of “best ofs” and “year in reviews,” don’t forget to take a minute to check out these highly anticipated titles.

Just Cause 4

  • Release Date(s): December 4
  • Developer(s): Avalanche Studios
  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: Action-Adventure

The Just Cause series is back! After Just Cause 3’s mixed reception back in 2015, Just Cause 4 will have Rico Rodriguez face off against another criminal organization in a beautiful South American setting. Packed with more over-the-top action than even the zaniest of ’80s action flicks, this next game seems like it’ll be the most ridiculous entry yet. Traveling to the island nation of Solís in search of information about his father’s death, Rico will once again fight against the Black Hand criminal syndicate who now possess weather-controlling technology.

Just Cause 4 has a plot that feels like it was ripped straight out of a G.I. Joe cartoon and that could not be more perfect for a game whose protagonist can travel anywhere using a grapple gun and a wingsuit. If Just Cause 4 can rid itself of the bugs and technical issues that plagued its predecessor, playing as Rick will be a blast. The Just Cause series is at its best when it leans into the absurd, and thankfully, this upcoming game seems like it will be delightfully extra.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom

  • Release Date(s): December 4
  • Developer(s): The Game Atelier
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: Platformer

Coming off the heels of last year’s delightful Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap — a remake of Wonder Boy 3 — Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom looks like a delightful side-scrolling adventure. Similar to The Dragon’s Trap, this game will have the player control a boy who gains various animal transformations as the story progresses, giving him new powers and the ability to explore new areas. This boy, Jin, must stop his evil uncle Nabu from using dark magic to destroy the kingdom they live in. While this might not be the most original set up for a fantasy game, it looks like this title will have enough quirky charm to make the idea their own.

Developed by the indie studio The Game Atelier, this title has the full endorsement and support of the creator of the original Wonder Boy series, Ryuichi Nishizawa. As this game is not trying to be a mechanically identical copy of a Wonder Boy game, like The Dragon’s Trap was, it’ll be interesting to see this title’s new take on platforming combat. It’s also hard not to get excited for a game that has a theme song with such a strong Saturday morning cartoon vibe.

Persona Dancing: Endless Night Collection

  • Release Date(s): December 4
  • Developer(s): P-Studio
  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4
  • Genre: Rhythm

The Persona Dancing: Endless Night Collection is technically three games rolled into one $ 100 bundle. Continuing the brand new Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight and Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, this collection will also contain a PlayStation 4 port of Persona 4: Dancing All Night, which was previously only available on the PlayStation Vita. Additionally, Dancing in Moonlight and Dancing in Starlight are available on the PlayStation Vita for $ 40 each, but do not come with Dancing All Night. Considering the Vita is a dying system, it might just be best to pick up the collection for PlayStation 4 and get the entire series in one convenient package.

These rhythm games will delight anyone who enjoyed the charming and endearing characters in the mainline games. Mixing the iconic music of the franchise with extra character-focused content is a brilliant idea — even if rhythm games tend to cater to a more niche audience. If you want to spend a bit more time with the lovable Persona protagonists and enjoy some of the best music in gaming, this collection will make a terrific gift to yourself this holiday season.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

  • Release Date(s): December 7
  • Developer(s): Bandai Namco Studios, Sora Ltd.
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch
  • Genre: Fighting

Super Smash Bros Ultimate might be the most talked about and anticipated game of 2018. Since its surprise announcement back in March, every new piece of information about this game spawns dozens of articles, hundreds of analysis and opinion videos, and countless memes. Initially criticized as seeming like a port of the fourth Smash Bros. title, it’s now clear that there is enough unique and enticing content to call it a wholly new entry in the beloved fighting game franchise. It has more characters, a variety and single and cooperative modes, and an adventure mode where Kirby is the universe’s only hope. No wonder so many eyes are on this upcoming game.

Longtime fan of the Smash Bros. franchise will definitely love this latest entry in the series and all of its weird decisions, like the introduction of the Piranha Plant as a playable fighter. Newcomers will be drawn to Ultimate due to its tight controls and the genuine love shown for the many different franchises under the Nintendo label. Super Smash Bros Ultimate will likely be one of the best-selling games of this holiday season.

Katamari Damacy Reroll

  • Release Date(s): December 7
  • Developer(s): Namco
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PC
  • Genre: Puzzle, Action

When Katamari Damacy premiered in 2004, it received a decent amount of praise in Japan and became a sleeper hit in the United States. Featuring a minuscule cosmic prince who has to recreate the stars after his gigantic father destroyed them during a night of binge drinking, the quirky game definitely earned all of its praise. Its mechanics, which centered on rolling a ball around to collect random junk until it’s big enough to become a star, set Katamari Damacy apart from every other game in the early 2000s.

A remake of Katamari Damacy seems a bit overdue at this point. Luckily, Katamari Damacy Reroll will give younger players a chance to play and appreciate this eccentric title at an affordable price on either Switch or PC. It’ll also finally give gamers in the PAL region a chance to play this enjoyable game legitimately.

Ojojojo Volume 1-2 (Manga) US Release

anime and manga to check out this december Ojojojo
  • Premiere date: December 24
  • Publisher: Seven Seas Entertainment
  • Genre(s): Comedy, Romance, School, Slice of Life

From the creator of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid comes a comedy manga about two teenagers who find solace in each other. Jigokumeguri Haru, the heir to one of the most powerful conglomerates in Japan, is not only rich and famous, but also arrogant, cold, and, consequently, friendless.

It’s because of this that she transfers from school to school, looking for a place to fit in. Things begin to look up when she crosses paths with Kawayanagi Tsurezure, the resident school weirdo.

Tsurezure gives Haru (and her stuck-up personality) a run for her money. But the two quickly form a friendship, despite each of them being somewhat socially awkward. You know what they say: Birds of an antisocial feather flock together, and these birds’ funny and, oftentimes, heartwarming adventures in friendship are sure to keep you entertained.

You can check out the slice-of-life comedy manga this December 24, just in time for the holidays.

Your HelloGiggles horoscope, November 25th to December 1st: It’s the perfect post-Thanksgiving week

Your HelloGiggles horoscope, November 25th to December 1st: It’s the perfect post-Thanksgiving week

Your HelloGiggles horoscope, November 25th to December 1st: It’s the perfect post-Thanksgiving week

This week will be fairly easy-breezy, thank goodness. We can breathe in the expansive and optimistic air of Sagittarius season, and enjoy the dreaminess that Neptune going direct has evoked in our lives. It’s probably the perfect post-Thanksgiving week as we get back to our daily grind, not to mention deal with the demands of the holiday season. However, not everything’s 100% peachy in the cosmos. Let’s not forget we’re still in the midst of Mercury Retrograde, and this week the little planet enters Scorpio on December 1st. Ouch.

Scorpios, the serious and salty stingers that they are, don’t mess around. As a result, we might be perceiving and picking up on a whole lot in the energy field, which might cause us to impulsively speak out about something without knowing all the facts. You might find yourself thinking negative and suspicious thoughts instead of giving people the benefit of the doubt. Beware of knee-jerk reactions and old fears cropping up. Instead, try to do some self-reflection and self-soothing.

Here’s what else the stars have in store for you in your weekly horoscope.

SAGITTARIUS

You’re feeling a huge shift in your life in so many ways, Sag. It’s important to understand that you are able to make anything possible right now. Really. So make sure you’re focusing on what’s truly moving you towards the highest good. Think long-term gains and get ready for your blessing.

CAPRICORN

Don’t worry, Capricorn, all is well. You might be in the midst of an upset or disappointment, but the stars want you to know that life’s rejections are truly the Universe’s blessings. Try to see that everything is working out for you right now, even if it doesn’t seem like it. Trust.

AQUARIUS

You’re surrounded by an awesome support system, Aquarius. This is important to keep in mind when life becomes overwhelming or even overbearing at times. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your tribe wants to help you thrive, so lean on them.

PISCES

It’s time for you to make some moves, Pisces. While you might have hesitated or doubted whether you should move forward with this new transition—whether it’s a relationship, project, or literal move—the cosmos want you to have faith in yourself. You can do this.

ARIES

You’re headed for a major revelation, Aries. You’ve always known you’re a powerful manifester, but lately, something’s been off about a certain project or situation. Now the stars are lining up for you so that you’re able to finally hit that reset button. You got this.

TAURUS

You’re ready to just hunker down for the holidays, Taurus. You’re at a place of stability and comfort, which is where you like to be. Enjoy this for now because the stars don’t want you resting for long. There’s a spark within that needs to be lit. Don’t underestimate yourself.

GEMINI

You’re feeling feels, Gemini, which feels a bit scary for you. You typically like to remain in control of your emotions, but a certain situation or relationship requires you to empathize and sort it out with feelings rather than solutions and intellectualism. Feel what you need to. It’s the only way through.

CANCER

It’s time to revisit something you left behind, Cancer. Maybe it’s a project, a job opportunity, or relationship. Perhaps the timing was off then, but maybe it’s the right time now to pursue it. Or maybe you need to return to it in order to finally let it go. Whichever you choose will push you forward.

LEO

You’re waiting to see if something is worth it, Leo. You like to be sure that whatever you’re doing is worthy of your time and talent. You don’t want to waste your electric energy on just anything or anyone. But sometimes you gotta take a chance and find out by doing it. So, do it.

VIRGO

You’re finally seeing your value and worth, Virgo. Meaning you now know that you deserve to reach for the stars. Like, really reach. You’ve always known you’re talented and intelligent, but now you understand you’re worthy of greatness. Don’t forget this feeling.

LIBRA

You’re doing you, Libra. While it might feel odd to be so focused on yourself and not really caring about what others think, this is the most liberating thing you can do for yourself. Continue to break free from old connections and habits, and keep moving ahead.

SCORPIO

You need to act on the images you have in your head, Scorpio. You have big goals, but sometimes you lack the wherewithal and the confidence that you can make those dreams into your reality. The only thing stopping you is you. Get out of your own way.

Basically, bbs, if we can take life day by day and continue to check in with our feelings about where we are and where we want to be, this could be a turning point for us. Keep yourself in check, and let the Universe take care of the rest.
