Dick Daniels inducted into CIO Hall of Fame

Kaiser Permanente has a long and rich history of using technology to support the care and service we provide our members, from opening our Hospitals of the Future in the mid-1950s to using artificial intelligence to predict health outcomes today.

As the pace of change for technology has accelerated, the role of chief information officer at Kaiser Permanente has become increasingly important. We are proud to share that Dick Daniels, Kaiser Permanente’s executive vice president and CIO, is a 2019 inductee into the CIO Hall of Fame. The honor, awarded by CIO, a publication of IDG Communications, Inc., recognizes a select group of IT executives and visionaries that has significantly contributed to and profoundly influenced the IT discipline.

In his CIO role, Daniels is responsible for the vision, strategy and execution of Kaiser Permanente’s information technology.

“The use of technology has been a key differentiator for Kaiser Permanente since we opened nearly 75 years ago,” said Bernard J. Tyson, Kaiser Permanente chairman and chief executive officer. “Dick and his team have helped Kaiser Permanente maintain that edge. We are advancing patient care through innovation and technology — expanding access to care outside traditional care settings, delivering technology solutions that meet 21st-century expectations, and enabling our members to experience more healthy years.”

Kaiser Permanente recently earned a 2019 CIO 100 IT innovation award for the Advance Alert Monitor program, an example of the innovative technology that is transforming how we deliver care. The Advance Alert Monitor program is an early warning system that predicts likelihood of deterioration of a patient in the intensive care unit and triggers an alert to care providers who can further investigate and respond.

In May, Daniels received the Western Regional Minority Supplier Diversity Council 2019 President’s Award for his commitment and leadership, and for giving back to diverse businesses and communities.

“I’m honored to receive these awards on behalf of the IT employees at Kaiser Permanente who are dedicated to bringing the vision of this organization to life,” said Daniels. “They’re not just designing, implementing, and maintaining technology systems that support Kaiser Permanente, they’re also shaping the role that technology plays in the future of health and health care.”

Dick Miller dies aged 90

OHMYGOSSIP — Dick Miller has died.
The 90-year-old actor – who was best known for his portrayal of Murray Futterman in 1984 classic horror ‘Gremlins’ – passed away due to natural causes on Wednesday (30.01.19), just a month after celebrating his milestone birthday with a party.
A family spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that his wife Lainie, daughter Barbara and granddaughter Autumn were by his side when he died.
His loved ones said in a statement: “His sense of humor and the unique way he looked at the world won him many lifelong friends and worldwide fans.”
The ‘A Bucket of Blood’ star’s career spanned over 60 years, and he had over 175 movie credits and 2,000 TV appearances to his name.
Director Joe Dante – who used Dick in almost every project he worked on, including the ‘Gremlins’ films – hailed his friend as one of his “most treasured collaborators”.
He wrote on Twitter: “I’m devastated to report that one of my best friends and most treasured collaborators has passed away. I “grew up” (kinda) watching Dick Miller in movies from the 50s on and was thrilled to have him in my first movie for @RogerCorman..
“We hit it off and every script thereafter I always looked for a role for Dick–not just because he was my friend but because I loved watching him act! But he leaves behind over 100 performances, a bio & a doc–not bad for a guy who hardly ever enjoyed a starring role.(sic)”
‘Baby Driver’ filmmaker Edgar Wright also paid tribute to the ‘Terminator’ star, describing him as the “king of character actors”.
He tweeted: “RIP Dick Miller, surely the king of character actors. A friendly, funny face in Gremlins (1&2), Piranha, the original Little Shop Of Horrors, Not Of This Earth, After Hours & my personal beatnik fav, Walter Paisley in ‘A Bucket Of Blood’. Any role of his was cult movie nirvana.”

Christian Bale Rips ‘Charisma-Free Assholes’ Dick Cheney and Mitch McConnell at Golden Globes

Handout

Accepting his award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for playing the title role of Dick Cheney in Vice on Sunday night, Christian Bale shared some advice from his wife. She told him, “Less is more.”

“She knows the dumb crap that can come out of my mouth at times,” Bale said. “I can sink and ruin a perfectly good movie in a so-so career in one speech,” the actor continued. “So thank you for that advice, my love.”

From there, Bale went on to thank the film’s writer and director Adam McKay. “He said I’ve got to find somebody that can be absolutely charisma-free and reviled by everybody,” he said, adding that from now on he “will be cornering the market on the charisma-free assholes.”

The critics who hated the Dick Cheney biopic ‘Vice’ really, really hated it

TwitterFacebook

When it comes to Adam McKay’s VICE, critics are on very different sides of the (theater) aisle.

Despite early and persistent Oscar buzz (the film scored six Golden Globe noms), the Dick Cheney biopic has received a fairly mixed first wave of critical reception. While some laud the film as cleverly biting, others have denounced it as a clumsy display of political hatred.

Starring Christian Bale, Sam Rockwell, and Amy Adams, VICE uses a nonlinear structure to walk audiences through the political career of “the most powerful vice president” in modern American history. Touching on Cheney’s rise to national politics and yes, his involvement in the Iraq War, VICE paints a controversial portrait of an even more controversial figure. Read more…

Citing Health Concerns, Dick Parsons Resigns as CBS Interim Chairman of the Board

Barely 30 days after his appointment as interim chairman of the board at CBS, Reuters is reporting that Dick Parsons has resigned from the position.

From Reuters:

Parsons, who said he had complications from a form of cancer, will be replaced by Strauss Zelnick, who founded the media-focused private equity firm Zelnick Media Capital, according to the statement.

Richard “Dick” Parsons, former Time Warner chairman and CEO, was named interim chairman weeks after Leslie Moonves stepped down as chairman and CEO of CBS amid a cascade of sexual assault allegations published in a series of articles in The New Yorker.

Parsons is a well-rounded leader noted for his sound judgment and vast experience in politics, finance, entertainment, and philanthropy. His illustrious career earned him the February 2002 cover of BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine. He also has a proven track record of driving results at large organizations during times of crisis and change.

“Among the numerous roles of this unflappable leader: Taking the helm of AOL Time Warner as the media giant was reeling from a troubled merger during the height of the dot-com boom; serving as chairman of Citigroup as the financial giant was recovering from the sector’s financial meltdown; lending his expertise to U.S. presidents over the years in tackling dire issues ranging from Social Security reform to job creation during the Great Recession; helping to resurrect the famed Apollo Theater at a time in which it was financially crippled; and assuming the role of  interim CEO  to stabilize the L.A. Clippers NBA franchise during the Donald Sterling scandal,” writes Black Enterprise Editor-in-Chief Derek T. Dingle.

According to Deadline, Parsons’ health has taken a turn for the worse in the last couple of weeks.
