Finnish school students outperform US students on ‘fake news’ digital literacy tasks

A recent study revealed students at an international school in Finland significantly outperformed US students on tasks which measure digital literacy in social media and online news. The researchers suggest this may be due to the Finnish and International Baccalaureate curricula’s different way of facilitating students’ critical thinking skills compared to the US system and curriculum.

What I Wear to Work: Chris, Digital Marketing Executive

Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Here’s why.

Welcome to “What I Wear to Work.” A series on, you guessed it, who wears what to work. Would you like to be featured? See the bottom of this post for instructions. Chris Ferris is the Vice President of Digital Marketing at Pierpont Communications, the largest PR and Marketing firm in Houston, TX. Even though the standard dress code for most who work in digital seems to be jeans and untucked shirts, Chris tries to wear a jacket or suit and tie to work. Why? Because he likes it, and it also differentiates him from the competition. Doesn’t mean his look has to be straight laced and stuffy though. See below for proof.

What I Wear to Work: Chris, Digital Marketing Executive | Dappered.com

The Suit: Lands’ End Tailored Fit Stretch Chino Suit and Pants – $ 149.37 when 40% off. Just got this suit (thanks for the tip, Dappered!) and I love it. It fits beautifully and I only had to have the sleeves and pants shortened. It’s really an ideal suit to wear in the spring and summer. And it stays so hot it Houston in the fall that I can get a good 6 months of wear out of this suit.

The Tie: The Tie Bar Navy Ad Stripe Tie – $ 19. Because I wear a tie every day, I have a lot of ties. I shop almost exclusively at The Tie Bar because they have fantastic variety and great prices. And the ties look sharp.

The Tie Bar: The Tie Bar Platinum Silver Shot Tie Bar 1 inch – $ 15. Wearing a tie? Use a tie bar. Sets my look apart even a little more without being too over the top. I have this bar in matte navy as well.

The Shirt: Nordstrom Trim Fit Microgrid Dress Shirt – $ 59.90 ($ 89.50). Elegant, simple white dress shirt with a very subtle pattern that makes it a little more interesting than a plain white dress shirt.

The Watch: Certus Classic Silver Dial Date Watch – $ 71.25. I don’t see my exact watch online anymore (the one linked to here ships in… 1-3 MONTHS?) but there are similar makes on Amazon. Not too pricey, but looks timeless and goes with just about any work outfit.

The Belt: Trafalgar Men’s Leather Dress Belt – $ 68. Simple burgundy belt that, like the watch, can really be worn with anything I might wear to work.

The Shoes: Cole Haan Jefferson Wholecut Leather Oxfords – $ 129.99 ($ 300). Just got these and they look fantastic (although I’m still breaking them in).

The Underwear: UNIQLO Airism Collection – Prices VaryI only wear AIRism. Houston can get pretty hot and muggy and this underwear does the job.

The Socks: Banana Republic – $ 14.50. I usually wear Banana Republic socks but they don’t seem to make tan or caramel colored socks any longer. Match those socks to your trousers, no?

A huge thank you to Chris for sending in his what he wears to work, and YES, you bet he got the Pierpont logo in his outfit pic not once but twice. The man is a pro. Head over to LinkedIn to discuss this with your coworkers or follow Dappered if you want to see these in your feed. If you want to take this for a spin, send an email to joe@dappered.com with who you are, what you do, and what you’d like to submit. To be featured, we’ll need a picture of you at work, as well as the details on what you’re wearing/usually wear on the job. Final image will have to be cropped down to 1500×840 pixels, so, keep that in mind when shooting. Landscape mode please, and let’s keep anything from the chin up out of it. Note that sending an email with your picks and a pic doesn’t guarantee publishing. Be yourself! And get your employer’s permission if you’re gonna get specific with your place of work.

How to Expand Your Digital Footprint to Reach More Homeowners

Data shows that people buying houses today are specifically looking for contractors like you to fulfill a major segment of their purchase: remodeling and home improvement.

In the coming decade, Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies projects millennials will be creating 23 million new households. And according to NerdWallet, 75 percent of them think it’s a priority to buy a house. But that’s easier said than done when the same generation is deeply in debt and facing a job market that pays relatively less than it did their parents. Their solution involves home improvement projects: They buy fixer-uppers and shape their investment up over time.

Contractors are front and center to this strategy and in order for these homebuyers to find you, you need to meet them online, where your digital footprint is your best bet to stand out from all the noise.

When nearly nine of out ten people are finding their contractors online, that’s where the game is played. Lead generation services like Modernize will help you set up best practices for your online exposure and behavior. Be sure to base your digital footprint strategy on both market research and direct feedback from homeowners. At Modernize, for example, we regularly speak with homeowners who look to us for guidance in the sometimes murky and confusing home improvement market — especially online.

Find out how Modernize can help you create or overhaul your marketing and online presence in 2019. Until then, learn more about the best ways to expand your gateway to higher quality home improvement leads — and more of them.

Home Improvement Marketing: Blogging

When you tell site visitors your stories, they know you have them — it’s as simple as that. A completed project and a smiling customer isn’t brilliant marketing — it’s ancient marketing.

It’s just that in 2019, the Internet allows you to tell those stories across the region and with minimal effort. Websites are affordable and effective designs are easy to create. With the guidance of expert lead generation companies like Modernize, you are definitely able to not only tell your stories and the stories your customers want to tell about your projects, but you can also do so with your company’s unique style.

A simple approach to blogging is giving potential home improvement leads a window into your work: Before and after photos communicate what words cannot. Photos aren’t just helpful from a service perspective, though. They’re also a smart move for your digital marketing and contractor lead generation strategy. The majority of your website visitors will spend less than 15 seconds on your site, so it’s important to make the most of that time.

Give them photos of your work and tell them stories around those photos so that they can learn more if your work leaves them intrigued. Don’t know how? Ask us.

Home Improvement Marketing: Social Media

Data shows just one percent of contractors say they utilize social media, despite virtually all homeowners looking for their contractors online.

Stand out from the crowd by first leaning into social marketing — whether on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, or some other growing networks — to enhance the amount of your home improvement leads and their quality. One of Modernize’s specific aims is providing you high intent leads as opposed to empty names you have to waste time calling for little or no return.

Develop a strategy to utilize social media. And structure a 40-40-20 rule, which reasons that you should offer customers value in exchange for their attention.

  • Spend 40 percent of your time posting helpful information
  • Spend 40 percent of your time directly interacting with customers
  • And spend 20 percent of your time promoting your brand.

Don’t go at it alone. Find out how Modernize can help.

Home Improvement Marketing: Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Research shows 98 percent of homeowners pick a contractor from the first page of results they see on the Internet. That’s good news: You have a clear path ahead of you to showing up in those results.

But merely existing online is not enough to get you there — you have to stand out.

From using the correct keywords on your site to blogging and publishing with an emphasis on new and evolving trends, your SEO strategy is directly tied to your lead generation. That’s not a judgment call on your abilities as a home improvement contractor, it’s rather the reality of the home improvement market.

Therefore, any contractor should optimize the way their business appears in online searches. If you’re not an expert in creating an SEO strategy, managing it, and continuously adapting it to the ever-evolving taste and preference of today’s homeowners, leave all that to a service like Modernize.

Professional Lead Generation Services

While the reality is that many contractors are not tapping into the potential of data and its resulting analytics, the most successful contractors in the industry are beginning to make the move: More and more contractors are turning to lead generation services like Modernize to complete more projects each year. Here’s where we stand:

  • 1.5 million homeowners found their contractors through Modernize in 2017
  • And that’s, in turn, earned $ 1.5 billion for those contractors.

Lead generation services like Modernize are paramount to a successful marketing approach in the digital age. No one knows homeowners as Modernize does — and like anything else, homeowners and their homes are ever changing and evolving, both technologically and culturally. Learn more about our most recent findings: the Homeowner Survey Index: Q1 2019.

Whether it’s starting your online efforts from scratch or diving into your decades of experience to discern trends and help you sharpen your client base, learn more about us today and find out how we can help you.

3 digital industries that China is dominating

China is one of the foremost nations embracing a fully connected society. Millennial Moves: How to Build a Digital Marketing Career

There are few people disciplined enough to teach themselves the inner workings of internet tools and turn their learning into a career. Interpersonal communication has become somewhat of an anomaly. As interactions become more digitized, there are even fewer people capable of creating relationships online that translate into practical connections. If you’re looking for a rare example of someone who’s done both then look no further than Rebecca Ijeoma, better known as Dimplez. Dimplez, the founder of IJEOMA Agency, built a digital marketing career working with Capitol Records, SXSW, Ne-Yo, and more. Capitalizing on timing, transparency, skill expansion, and opportunity brought her a career with limitless growth potential.

Capitalize on Timing

“I first got my start in undergrad, while at the University of Arizona. I began as a blogger and didn’t realize that I was onto something until ’07-’08 when some of my blogs started getting syndicated on Global Grind,” she says. “The traction my writing was gaining piqued my interest. I wanted to create more, and cover more—and wound up teaching myself photography. I eventually learned everything that went into creating and maintaining a site, including web and graphic design.”

By 2009, MissDimplez.com came to life. It served as Dimplez’ digital real estate where she could provide her perspective on cultural moments. The year 2009 was the dawn of the creativepreneur era, a time where people were turning their creative abilities into cash. Using tools like WordPress, Tumblr, and Twitter anyone could build their own site, and share content to the masses. Major outlets were syndicating independent work in a mad grab for content. It turned bloggers, graphic designers, photographers, and videographers into authoritative voices in culture. Dimplez took full advantage by teaching herself transferable skills, making her a prime candidate for opportunities in the newly formed job market of digital marketing.

Creating Community and Opportunity

Instead of shielding her learning curve from the world, Dimplez used transparency to build community. She shared the good and bad of her website building experience. It connected her with people who needed her newly acquired expertise, which turned into paid work.

“I was designing sites, creating graphics, and maintaining servers for artists and media personalities alike. People who had never met me in person got to see and trust my skills and abilities based off of what I presented and was able to create digitally.”

Employment Is Not The Enemy

Being your own boss is a millennial’s dream. When Capital Records offered Dimplez a digital marketing manager position, she happily took the job.

“Stepping into a role or position at a company you do not own is not a step back, nor does it take away from who you are as a creative,” says Dimplez. “It actually serves as an opportunity to learn a broader perspective and hone a skill set that will only benefit you in the long run.”

“Effective storytelling is the distinction between gaining a fan or just gaining a follower. Fans make an emotional investment in you, your career, or your art. A lifelong fan is worth more currency in theory and actuality, than 1,000 followers that may never truly buy into you.”

Dimplez represents what creative work and building a career in digital marketing is all about: being a self-starter and seeing the lesson in every working scenario.
