California’s Latest Disaster: A 300-Gallon Acid Fire Burns on a Major Highway

If rush hour in the Bay Area wasn’t bad enough already, commuters encountered a novel obstacle on their way homes Friday: a truck spilled 300 gallons of acid on a major freeway, stalling traffic and igniting a fire in surrounding vegetation.

The truck was carrying a blend of phosphoric and nitric acid when the chemicals spilled onto Interstate 880 near the city of Hayward in the East Bay. The corridor is a major thoroughfare used by people working in Silicon Valley and commuting to homes north of the tech hub.

While the cause of the acid spill was unknown, the incident led to a toxic vapor plume that led authorities in Hayward to urge nearby residents to shelter in place. The San Francisco Chronicle said that the spill also caused a vegetation fire, prompting the California Highway Patrol to shut down traffic on I-880 on both directions.

Late Friday afternoon, hazmat crews managed to stop the acid leak and was working to clean up the spill, the Chronicle said.

The summer of 2018 has been a hard one for California residents, with a number of wildfires raging in both the northern and southern portions of the state. Firefighters have battled blazes near recreational areas and homes in Northern California, notably the Mendocino Complex Fire that has become the largest wildfire in the state’s history.

Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Was a Total Disaster

Christopher Polk/Getty

For someone so recently tone-deaf, it’s remarkable that Justin Timberlake managed to get out a note at all during his Super Bowl halftime show.

Then again, the sound design was so poor—Timberlake’s vocals were only decipherable when no instruments were playing—even that meager commendation is arguable. What’s inarguable is that after a string of jaw-dropping extravaganzas from the likes of Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake delivered the worst halftime show of the tradition’s recent pop-star era. May the ghost of Prince haunt him forever.

It’s one thing when a cynical media is preemptively eager to drag a performance. From the unjust optics of Timberlake’s redemption for his part in the Janet Jackson nip-slip fiasco to the rumors that he’d be using a hologram of The Purple One against his family’s wishes, the lead-up to Sunday night’s show was mired in controversy. But it’s another when the abysmal end product merits the inevitable snark.

The Struggle Is Real: Black Woman’s Salon Visit In China Ends In Disaster

The hair struggle is real! One Black woman proved that when she visited a salon to get her curly hair straightened in Shanghai, China.

A 22-year-old student named Maryjane Byarmoriginally from New Jersey but now residing overseas, was recently welcomed by the staff at a new salon with a warm smile. She started her visit to with a relaxing shampoo that seemed to go well. However, things went far left. The young woman sat through four hours of irritating hairstyling, an experience that many Black women who consider visits to new salons as risky experiments can relate to in full. First, the stylist neglected to brush her hair while blow-drying, a no-no move that brings about major tangles. The stylist didn’t quite know how to lay the young woman’s hair.

“They were really struggling…so I was kind [of] suggesting they give up,” she said to Allure. It was a disaster so I knew they wanted to, [but] they kept telling me they felt bad ’cause they wanted to do a good job.”

But Byarm kept a nice attitude about the whole experience, which only cost her $ 6. “He spent a lot of time on me when he could have been doing other’s hair and getting paid, so I felt bad. They were all extremely nice. This salon is right outside my apartment so I see them often and we have grown to be friends and we all laugh at this video.”‘

She didn’t let the visit stop her from finding a salon that could rock with her. After a trip to the fancier side of Shanghai, she found a better stylist at a second salon for a $ 20 deal. “It [took] them about three hours to complete my hair, which is [the] amount of time that it takes me to do my own hair,” she said. I paid the regular amount. They didn’t charge me extra.” She detailed that experience in a second YouTube clip.

Maryjane was very happy with the outcome at the second place. “This is for all the people who said Chinese people couldn’t do hair,” she said to the camera while she ran her fingers through her hair.

Though her story had a good ending, the struggle for finding the right person to maintain her mane in the U.S. has opened her eyes about hair discrimination. “In the U.S., I always ran into problems trying to get my hair done at a salon,” she explained. “White-owned salons would always turn me away and black salons would always tell me they wanted to put a relaxer in my hair which I refused so they also didn’t do my hair.”

Exclusive: Watch James Franco and Dave Franco Talk 'The Disaster Artist'

In our exclusive video, James Franco and Dave Franco talk about The Disaster Artist, which is a new movie inspired by the making of the cult classic The Room.

Even though The Room has developed a reputation that has inspired mockery by some, James Franco, who directed and stars as filmmaker Tommy Wiseau, speaks with genuine respect for Wiseau's "heart and passion … everybody should have dreams." In a similar vein, costars Dave Franco, Seth Rogen and Ari Graynor express their…

MOVIE APP UPDATE:

‘The Disaster Artist’ Review: Hilarious, Heartfelt, and Has to Be Seen

How does an outlandish film like The Room come into existence? That’s what The Disaster Artist wants to illuminate. It tells the story of two friends, aspiring actor Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) and enigmatic egoist Tommy Wiseau (James Franco). As they struggle to make it in Hollywood, they decide to make their own movie.

And thus begins the insane story behind one of the essential pieces of outsider cinema in history.

Praise, Not Parody

It’s important to realize that a lot of love for The Room comes from the ironic appreciation of its absurd nature. It was worrisome that The Disaster Artist would take the same route. Thankfully, the movie has nothing but love and affection for its characters and story.

Dave Franco portrays Greg as a genuinely nice but naive guy who wants nothing more than to live the quintessential Hollywood dream. When he crosses paths with James Franco’s Tommy, the two strike up a friendship that feels completely believable and sweet. The chemistry between Greg and Tommy is palpable and carries the film throughout the entire running time.

And it’s never at the expense of its (admittedly weird) focal point: Tommy Wiseau. Wiseau is an unsolvable mystery of a character — no one knows his age, where he’s from, or how he’s able to fund all of his ventures — but the story is able to center in on what is important to Tommy’s own sense of self. He wants to be a star and fight against a system that doesn’t allow for outsiders like him.

The fact that The Disaster Artist is able to find the pathos and the relatable qualities in a cipher like Wiseau is miraculous. And James Franco’s performance is one for the books. He’s not creating a caricature of Wiseau. This is a transformative role that respects and admires the subject its presenting. It’s one of the best things you’ll see on the screen in 2017.

Stranger Than Fiction

And if you haven’t seen The Room, don’t worry. The film gives you plenty of context for this cinematic abnormality. And as wacky as The Room is, it’s not nearly as bonkers as the story behind its creation.

The Disaster Artist captures that journey with startling accuracy and reverence. The film is based on Greg Sestero’s book of the same name, but the picture goes above and beyond by recreating elements of The Room with startling veracity. It’s so exhaustive that the film even has a section devoted to comparing the original film to the recreations. It’s mesmerizing.

Plus, this movie is relentlessly funny. The humor is nearly nonstop but it magically never derails the emotional arc of the two leads. As ridiculous as things get — and boy, do they get CRAZY — we still care for Tommy and Greg. We want them to succeed, even as their friendship is brought to the brink by Tommy’s own faults.

If I had one significant complaint, it’s that a large chunk of the story gets skipped over. MINOR SPOILER AHEAD. We don’t see any of the post-production processes for the film. The story jumps from the end of Greg’s involvement with The Room to the premiere event.

As nutso as the making of The Room was, it would have been fascinating to see how all these elements were glued together to make the movie. The film justifies it by sticking with Greg’s point-of-view but it’s still an element of the story that would be great to get a glimpse at.

Is The Disaster Artist Good?

Despite my one critique, it’s impossible not to fall in love with The Disaster Artist. It’s the Ed Wood of a new generation of film fans. It overflows with optimism and support for those who do whatever it takes to make their dreams come true. And it’s a beautiful, hilarious, and never phony examination of the kind of delightful weirdos that make movies.

The Disaster Artist is one of the necessary films of 2017. It’s Tommy’s planet. We just live on it.

How to Get an SBA Disaster Loan After Hurricane Harvey

If there is one important lesson business owners learn early and often, it is that there will always be setbacks. The recent devastation from Hurricane Harvey is one example of how these setbacks can rarely be avoided. You can prepare for them, however, by considering resources designed to get your company back on track. One of the most respected assistance programs is administered by the SBA.

(Image: iStock/Weekend Images Inc.)

Am I Eligible?

The Small Business Administration has been giving business owners a helping hand since 1958, and they offer several financial programs specifically for those suffering losses from a declared disaster. What kind of disaster qualifies? The SBA keeps an updated list of all eligible disaster areas in its database, where you will find Presidential and SBA agency declared disasters, as well as those declared by the Agriculture Department. Events most often covered include flooding, drought, and tropical storms.

It is important to remember that you need to be affected by a disaster to begin the process of applying for help. It may take time for the website to be updated, and not all disasters will qualify. (A quick check on the government’s Disaster Assistance address tool will let you know.) If you feel that your disaster should be covered – but isn’t – you can contact local officials to see if they have started the process for disaster declaration. The approval can be long, and may not always go your way. You can also try petitioning the White House directly for disaster approval through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

What Expenses Are Covered?

Once your specific disaster has been listed on the site, you can start the process of getting help for your business. The loans issued by the SBA are to be used for business-related expenses with one exception — there is a disaster loan option for homeowners and renters (no business holdings required) that caps at $ 200,000. There is also a program available to help with times of economic loss for businesses. Businesses who were unable to pay bills or meet financial obligations may qualify for working capital (Economic Injury Disaster Loans) to help get you through until your business is up and running again.

The funds from an SBA loan are to be used to pay for uninsured damages to your business and company property. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be used for insured items, however. If you need to improve your repaired or replaced property to avoid future damages, you can usually get 20% more than original value cost with a loan. You can also use loan proceeds to cover outstanding mortgage payments for damaged, insured property.

How Do I Apply?

You should immediately apply for assistance once you know that you are eligible for funds. Business owners can start the application at the SBA website, which is the fastest way to receive a determination. A business of any size (including agricultural co-ops and private nonprofits) can apply for up to $ 2 million in loans for economic loss; businesses may also apply for up to $ 2 million in physical damages. Both loans cannot exceed the maximum of $ 2 million in total funding.

You’ll need the following items to fill out your application:

  • Business’s legal name, ownership details (including SSNs for owners), address and contact information
  • Documentation of type and scope of damages
  • Tax filing records
  • Profit and loss statements
  • Listings of assets and depreciation records

There may be additional items requested that are specific to your business type or situation. You may also be asked for more in-depth records for any of the above at any point in the loan application. For easy access during clean-up and recovery, it is recommended that you keep digital copies of pertinent records on hand to assist with application needs.

When Will I Get Approval?

Not everyone who applies will be given a loan, and the process takes some time to go through the appropriate channels. During your loan review, the SBA will check your business credit history, and potentially your personal credit history, to see if you are a good risk for the loan. (You can check your personal and business credit scores for free on Nav.) They will require any principals of the business to personally guarantee the loan — that means if you default, your personal credit scores could be at risk. They will also inspect the business property to estimate the value of damages. After insurance coverage and applicant’s eligibility are reviewed, a loan offer will be made to qualified business owners within 2-3 weeks from the application date. (Insurance review and payments do not have to be finalized for the loan to proceed.)

When Will I Get Funds?

Once you have been approved for a loan, and sign the required documents, an initial disbursement can be made within five days. This first payment can range from $ 14,000 to $ 25,000 and will depend on the total loan amount and type of disaster declaration made for the covered area. A loan officer will also be assigned to help the business owner get access to the remaining loan amount, including adjustments made for unexpected additional damages that may need to be covered.

Don’t Delay in Asking for Help

Affected businesses from Hurricane Harvey (or any other declared disaster) should take action right away to get help from the SBA. Each declared disaster will have a filing deadline in which all applications for assistance must meet. This is usually 60 days from declaration for physical damages and nine months for economic damages. These deadlines may be extended at the agency’s discretion.

It is very important for business owners to do all that they can to mitigate loss to their businesses before a disaster hits. The Small Business Administration has a helpful reference guide for these preparations. If the event is unexpected, however, or you can’t prevent loss, it’s good to know that they are standing by to help.

Radiohead’s Coachella Set Was Kind Of A Disaster

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival got off to a rough start on Friday night, as Radiohead’s set was chock-full of technical issues that forced the band to walk off stage multiple times.

The Friday-night headliner got through a few songs from their newest album, “A Moon Shaped Pool,” to start the set before the main festival speakers cut out during “Ful Stop.” To make matters more awkward, the band’s in-ear monitors continued to work, so they played on unaware that no one could hear them.

Radiohead experiences technical difficulties during “Ful Stop”

After that, the band reportedly made it through “Airbag” from the “OK Computer” album. But the audio issues returned for most of “15 Step,” causing the band to eventually leave the stage.

Frustrated festival-goers, who paid hundreds of dollars for tickets, could only stand in silence and anger looking at a dark stage. When the band returned, so did the audio issues, and the band had to leave the stage for a second time, according to Variety.

Sound keeps cutting out during #radiohead at coachella #someonesgettingfired

Can you actually hear me now?” Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke had to ask at one point. “I’d love to tell you a joke, lighten the mood, something like that. But this is Radiohead, so f**k it.”

Luckily, the end of the set sounds like it went rather well. And hey, they even played “Creep” later on. So it’s not all bad. Let’s just hope the same thing doesn’t happen during Kendrick Lamar’s scheduled performance on Sunday night.
