This UK airport has introduced therapy dogs to calm nervous fliers

Beats slugging down a mini of Jack Daniels on the plane, anyway

Words by Niamh McCollum

Travelling can be a stressful time for everyone, but for those of us with an actual phobia of flying, finding the ability to calm down can be lot easier said than done.

From sleeping pills, to meditation apps or a wee touch of scotch (Kirsten Wiig we’re looking at you), everyone has their own way of dealing with their fear of being up in the big blue unknown.

If you’ve grown tired of these methods, however, or found they were never that effective in the first place, we have some seriously good news for you: airport therapy dogs are coming to the UK!

That’s right, a Scottish airport has just announced that it is getting the UK’s very first therapy dog team to help nervous fliers by cuddling them into a state of calm.

From this weekend, a group of cute canines will be on hand to help soothe anyone who feels anxious before catching a flight at Aberdeen International Airport.

The dogs will be easily identified in high-vis jackets and matching bandanas (we know!), and will be free to roam around passengers and staff throughout the airport terminal.

Although it’s already a well-established practice for therapy dogs to visit schools, prisons, universities and nursing homes, this will be the first time that a group of this scale are being introduced into an airport environment.

In other words, we are witnessing a pretty monumental event in history.

According to Aberdeen airport, there will be 14 different dogs in total including golden retrievers, collies, red labradors, Scottish deerhounds and German shepherds.

Aberdeen airport duty manager Fraser Bain spoke of the exciting new announcement, saying: ‘We’re excited to be the first airport in the UK to offer this service to passengers.’

‘As well as benefiting our visitors, we also recognise the benefit to the mental health and wellbeing of our staff.’

He added: ‘The Canine Crew is made up of a variety of dogs, with a mixture of brilliant traits and personalities and we cannot wait to see the reaction of our passengers.’

Anyone need a lift up to Aberdeen this weekend?

Say What Now? Massive Gas Station Brawl Breaks Out Over Hot Dogs [Video]

Gas prices are soaring all over the country, but that’s not what led to this brawl at an Ohio gas station.

This brawl broke out over hot dogs.

Yes, hot dogs.

via NYDN:

Four women were caught on video attacking a man with everything they could get their hands on when he stepped in to stop them from beating up another female customer, according to Cam Dancy, who posted the video on YouTube and spoke to Cleveland’s 19 News.

“I know the video makes it look like he was trying to fight them, but they were actually jumping him,” Dancy said. “They were throwing trash cans and the windshield wiper thing, and one girl ripped the gas pump off and tried to hit him with that.”

According to a service station employee at the Akron station, the dustup started after someone in the shop accused the four women of stealing hot dogs.

When the foursome descended on that woman, the man in the video allegedly intervened, shoving one woman to the ground in the parking lot. Her friends then swarmed him, throwing a squeegee, a gas hose and what appear to be plastic garbage can lids at him.

Dancy said, “They threw the entire gas station at him.”

We thought our eyes were deceiving us, but one woman is actually slinging around an entire gas pump + hose.

Take a look.

This Blind Runner Will Be the First to Race the NYC Half Marathon Guided Only By Dogs

Thomas Panek, 48, has been a runner for quite some time — he’s run 20 races throughout his life. Ever since he lost his sight in his early 20’s, he was hesitant to continue running, but eventually trained to run in races with the help of human guides tethered to him. However, he wondered if it was possible to run a race without human guidance, instead led only with guide dogs.

Panek is the president and chief executive officer of Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a New-York based nonprofit organization that matches guide dogs to people with vision loss. Five years ago, Panek was paired with his own Guiding Eyes dog, and now 7-year-old yellow lab named Gus. In 2015, he developed the “Running Guides” program, which trains dogs to guide blind runners at a running pace.

This Sunday, Panek will be the first blind person to run the NYC Half Marathon, and he will be guided by a team of three dogs, Westley, Waffle and Gus.

Watch the video above to learn how Panek and his dogs will run Sunday’s race.
