Rapper 21 Savage Donates $25K To Southern Poverty Law Center

Rapper 21 Savage has donated $ 25,000 to the Southern Poverty Law Center, AJC reports.

The SPLC is the civil rights group that helped him when he was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this year. The Grammy-nominated artist, born Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was taken into custody in Georgia’s DeKalb County Feb. 3 on suspicion that he is from the United Kingdom and overstayed his visa.

He has long considered Atlanta his home. His attorney Charles Kuck said in a statement that Abraham-Joseph is making the SPLC donation public “because everyday Americans need to know that ICE is using civil immigration detention as a weapon against immigrants, many of whom, like 21 Savage, have relief from deportation and are able to fix their immigration status.”

After the rapper was arrested, the SPLC was one of several national organizations that called for his release.

“Creating oppressively adverse conditions of detention, like those in Irwin County, Georgia, far away from family and legal counsel, causes despair and hopelessness, and forces these men and women to give up on their immigration claims,” said Kuck, a managing partner at the Atlanta-based firm Kuck Baxter Immigration LLC.

Kaiser Permanente Donates $10,000 to American Diabetes Association in Honor of Outstanding Employee Volunteer

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente Hawaii is donating $ 10,000 to the American Diabetes Association in recognition of the outstanding volunteer efforts of Anne LaPorte, RN, CDE, an endocrinology nurse and certified diabetes educator at Kaiser Permanente’s Honolulu Medical Office. LaPorte is the third of six employees to be recognized for her volunteer service with the opportunity to donate $ 10,000 to a nonprofit of her choice, in celebration of Kaiser Permanente’s 60th anniversary in Hawaii.

“Anne is a passionate advocate for diabetes education, in our Kaiser Permanente clinic as well as in the community,” said Dave Underriner, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, Hawaii Region. “Her dedication to creating healthier communities through proactive measures such as education and access is a reflection of our organization’s commitment to improving health and wellness in Hawaii.”

LaPorte specializes in diabetes education at Kaiser Permanente, and for the past five years has volunteered her expertise to support education and prevention initiatives for the American Diabetes Association Hawaii office. She runs a support group for Kaiser Permanente members and non-members with type 1 diabetes, which has evolved into a community resource for people living with diabetes. She also frequently participates in educational programs and health fairs at local schools and businesses to educate the community about preventing diabetes through healthy habits and behaviors. Through ADA, LaPorte collaborated with Zippy’s Restaurants to create a diabetes-friendly menu offering healthy alternatives for diners with diabetes. LaPorte has been recognized by ADA’s Hawaii Chapter as the nurse educator of the year for the past two years.

Kaiser Permanente has a long history of giving back to Hawaii’s communities and supporting local nonprofits, schools and government initiatives through grants, sponsorships and volunteerism. From 2013 to 2017, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii contributed $ 3.4 million in grant funding to community organizations, government agencies and partners to promote health statewide. Every year, the organization brings together thousands of employees and their family members to participate in volunteer projects, including environmental restoration for Kaiser Permanente’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, campus beautification at Hawaii schools, and health screenings at the Special Olympics and other community events.

Kaiser Permanente Donates $1.65 Million to California Wildfire Recovery Efforts

OAKLAND, Calif.Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest integrated health system, committed up to $ 1.65 million to support relief and recovery efforts in communities affected by the recent California wildfires.

Kaiser Permanente is committing up to $ 1 million to the American Red Cross and other organizations to help Camp Fire victims in Northern California. The funds will support community-based and faith-based organizations helping people recover from these disasters. Kaiser Permanente has also deployed medical and nursing volunteers to provide care to displaced families and seniors now living in shelters.

The health system will also provide $ 500,000 to the United Way of Greater Los Angeles for immediate relief efforts as well as longer-term recovery support to organizations serving low-income residents.

Another $ 150,000 will go to Ventura County Community Foundation, with $ 50,000 specifically allocated to the foundation for organizational capacity support and the balance to provide shelter and long-term housing, financial and rental assistance, legal services, health care and more for those affected by the Woolsey and Hill fires in Southern California. For the next eight weeks, Kaiser Permanente is offering crisis support groups to the community for those impacted by the Thousand Oaks shooting and the fires.

“We are deeply saddened to see how these fires have hurt our communities across California,” said Bechara Choucair, MD, senior vice president and chief community health officer, Kaiser Permanente. “It is times like these when Kaiser Permanente leans in to fulfill our commitment to the health of our communities we serve, leveraging our resources, expertise and leadership in community health.”

In early November, massive, deadly wildfires broke out in Butte County in Northern California and in Ventura and Los Angeles counties in Southern California, destroying thousands of homes and displacing scores of people, including many vulnerable seniors. During that time, Kaiser Permanente worked alongside organizations including the American Red Cross and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles to provide support and determine the needs of the communities.

“The Red Cross is grateful for the commitment of Kaiser Permanente whose generosity helps provide shelter, food and comfort for people affected by the devastating wildfires in California,” said Don Herring, chief development officer at the American Red Cross.

“We are grateful for the fast response and generous aid Kaiser Permanente provided to United Way of Greater Los Angeles’ Disaster Relief Fund,” said Elise Buik, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Los Angeles. “This is a critical time, and this contribution will help vulnerable individuals and families rebuild their lives.”

Kaiser Permanente has a long-standing commitment to the health of communities across the country, including during times of natural disaster. Kaiser Permanente has so far committed more than $ 8 million during 2017 and 2018 to support relief and recovery efforts, including mental health services, for survivors of natural disasters such as the fires in Northern California, the Thomas Fire in Southern California, Hurricane Harvey in the southeast United States, and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
