James Charles and Tati Westbrook Drama Is Just the Latest Vicious Beauty YouTuber Feud

Stefanie Keenan/Getty

If you needed proof that the ever-growing popularity of vitamin gummy supplements herald the death of humanity, look no further than this weekend’s scandal involving beauty YouTuber and influencer James Charles.

For those blissfully unaware, Charles describes himself as “a 19 year old kid with a few blending brushes.” In 2016, at just 17, Charles became the first male face of CoverGirl. Since then, the makeup artist has amassed sponsorships with Morphe Cosmetics, along with 16 million YouTube subscribers who tune into his many tutorials.

Last Monday, Charles attended the Met Gala with YouTube, writing on Instagram, “Being invited to such an important event like the ball is such an honor and a step forward in the right direction for influencer representation in the media and I am so excited to be a catalyst.” The absurd concept of a need for greater “influencer representation” was thankfully lampooned on Twitter.

The Society’s Sean Berdy on Deaf Representation, Teen Activism and His Buzzy New Netflix Drama

There are plenty of despicable characters in The Society, Netflix’s new apocalyptic teen drama that imagines a present-day, Lord of the Flies-inspired crisis in a small New England town. But Sam, a deaf teenager played by Sean Berdy, is not one of them: after the town’s parents disappear, he acts as a steady moral center as the community around him descends into ruthlessness and egotism.

Berdy, 25, spent five seasons playing the teen heartthrob Emmett Bledsoe in the Freeform family drama Switched At Birth. During that run he became a prominent face of a deaf and hearing-impaired community hungering for representation. But in 2018, he announced that was stepping away from acting due to his struggles with bipolar disorder. “I may look like the happiest and silliest man on earth, but that is an artist’s art of hiding,” he wrote on Instagram. “I have been hiding for so long and I’m done with it.”

The Society marks Berdy’s first major role since his hiatus. In a phone interview conducted with the assistance of a translator, Berdy talked about returning to acting, the atmosphere on set and the increasing visibility of the deaf community in film and TV.

What parts of The Society feel most similar to our own society?

The society in the show is actually based heavily on the politics of today. We have this gun violence epidemic, we have domestic violence increasing. We have social justice and the hate for socialism. I think the creators tried to include a lot of those issues to bring the story to life.

Last year you wrote on Instagram about your struggles with bipolar disorder. What have the last few years been like for you?

To be honest, I had hidden my struggle with my bipolar situation for over a good 14 years, I would say. It is a battle from from the moment I wake up until the end of the day. It feels like you’re in a bubble at times and you’re trying to get out. You stretch the bubble and want to break out of itbut you’re back inside and in the darkness at the end of the day. That has been difficult for me. I am very fortunate to have my family who’s supported me.

How did you decide you were ready to return to acting?

I think acting is in my blood—I am always ready to perform when I feel it. I took a good three years to focus on myself.

I guess you don’t really know when the time is right until the material presents itself. This script came to me, and therefore the time was right. When I read the script, I thought, “Wow, This is different. This is a story that is going to be a big hit once it goes out into the world.” I believe that.

My struggle has been up and down. It’s a situation where I live day to day. But with a daily focus and working with such a great cast and crew who supports me, they understand that some days aren’t the best for me and they’re there for me.

You’ve described your character on Switched at Birth as the “deaf James Dean.” How is your new character, Sam, different?

Sam is very aware of the fact he’s always been different from everyone where he grew up. He’s the only deaf guy in a hearing family. He thinks outside of the box, and really cares about people more than he cares about himself, in many ways.

The Society is unique in that virtually all of its characters are teenagers. What was it like filming with a cast of of exclusively young actors?

We were all meeting at this place for the first time and learning how to be a family. We were away together for four months filming these ten episodes that had all these heavy emotional scenes and required a lot of mental preparation. That helped us get closer quicker.

We would eat dinner together. We would have house parties. We had a lot of fun while working very hard. We spent four months away on the East coast, shooting in 20-degree weather with the wind chill factor making it maybe 10 degrees. We were wearing parkas. We had to rent a charter bus to sit on with the heater between takes.

It was a lot of fun, and we do feel like a family. Chris [Keyser, the show’s creator] and the producers have given us these opportunities to run wild, to be creative with our characters. They believe in us. This show is a heavy show. We’re putting all of our emotions out there and giving it our all.

The house parties on the show are pretty crazy. How did the ones in real life compare?

Those parties were pretty tame: board games, spaghetti dinners, or we’d order Chinese takeout. They were very traditionally oriented and warm gatherings, as opposed to the show, where you’d have these wild get-downs. In the first episode, we’re partying in a churchthat’s about as wild as it gets. It’s probably about as wild a scene as I had ever filmed.

Your character mostly communicates with the other characters using American Sign Language. Did the other actors know how to sign before the show started?

They literally knew not one sign. We had an ASL coach on set who was responsible for teaching the lines in sign language to the cast. They had to have lessons during their free time and sometimes had to work extra over the weekends. I’m so proud of the castIt’s not easy and they’re doing a great job on the show.

I admire Gideon [Adlon, who plays Becca] so much. She showed up cold and impressed me with how motivated she was to learn the language. Basically for each episode, she had a week-and-a-half or two weeks max to learn all her lines in sign language believably. That’s a lot of pressureand she nailed it every time.

How did you draw on your own experiences with deafness to inform this character?

Sam’s story doesn’t exactly parallel my life because I’ve always been able to hear a little bitand I can pretty much hear sounds with a hearing aid. I love music. I consider myself bilingual: my first language is ASL but I do have the ability to speak.

Has ASL visibility increased in Hollywood since you started your career?

I can say that Hollywood has recognized ASL finally. Two recent movies, The Shape of Water and A Quiet Place, were both beautiful movies featuring sign language in different ways.

In fact, I’m writing a movie right now that uses ASL. It’s a love story, and I hope to go into production in the next couple years. ASL is hot right nowbut it’s my life language and it’s a beautiful language.

We have seen teenagers stepping up and becoming activists for change regarding issues like gun violence and climate change. What impact can teens have on the discourse?

For young people, this world is just getting crazier and crazier. It’s very hard for me emotionally, personally, to see things that are happening the world right now. I hope this show speaks for itself and illuminates what’s happening and helps the audience see we need to take care of some issues. I think that young people can inspire the world by sharing the message of love.

How would you fare in the world of The Society?

I’d lead. I’d jump right in and take a lead position, simple as that.

Mo’Nique Says ‘Karma’ Is At The Root Of Wendy’s Relationship Drama

Wendy Williams‘ life at this point is kind of an open book when you consider all the drama she’s wrapped up in.

In particular, the fact that her husband, Kevin Hunter, has been carrying on an alleged affair for almost half their 22-year-long marriage. And recently came news that his alleged mistress, Sharina Hudson, gave birth to his baby.

Well, since err’body else is chiming in on Wendy’s business (just like she does everybody else’s), may we direct you to someone else who is no stranger to controversy. That would be the one and only Mo’Nique. On a her newest installment of her “Mo’Nique and Sidney’s Open Relationship” podcast, they addressed what Williams is dealing with via an episode titled “Is Karma Real?

Of course you know Mo is is hardcore and doesn’t hold back. The Oscar winning actress spoke about how Williams is always trash talking people on her show, and how that has come home to roost, so to speak.

“It’s all about how messy I can be,” Mo’Nique said. “It’s all about ‘Ohhh, how can I crack on this person. How hard can I make fun of somebody’s downfall,’ or [it] appears to be that way.”

Although some may disagree, Mo’Nique claims that watching Williams on her show has taught her exactly how not to act or treat other people in her life.

“The lesson for me is, let me make sure what I put out there is what I would want to come back,” she continued. “Let me make sure I’m not so high on my a** that I can say or do, rip down, rip apart, tear down, whomever I choose to because it’s part of the business…but now when the universe says, ‘Oh, you know it’s your turn.’ We don’t pay attention to that, we just pay attention to the mess.”

Mo’Nique even suggested that Williams would be having far fewer problems if she just “minded her own business” instead of digging up the dirt on everyone else live on television each week.

On the other hand, some could argue that Mo’Nique’s criticizing of Wendy is essentially opening her up to being labeled a hypocrite, herself.

And your thoughts are?

Opinion: Jordyn Woods was smart to handle her Kardashian drama with the help of another famous family

Author Michael Arceneaux discusses Jordyn Woods appearance on Red Table Talk  following the Tristan Thompson cheating allegations, and exactly how Woods beat the Kardashians at their own game.

Jordyn Woods was savvy as hell to enlist the help of Jada Pinkett Smith, essentially her play auntie, to deal with the controversy around her alleged some-sort-of-romantic-relationship with Tristan Thompson, the basketball player more known for cheating on Khloe Kardashian even after impregnating her. Whenever someone falls out of good graces with the Kardashians, select media outlets curiously start reporting all sorts of bad information about that person. Next, their lil’ friends who desperately cling to the celebrity-adjacent status they’ve netted from their Kardashian affiliation proceed to publicly pounce on that person. The end result is that ex-friend becoming something of a pariah.

See the fate of select former employees, Blac Chyna, and the artist formerly known as Kris Humphries, among others. The same thing was beginning to happen to Jordyn Woods. She not only had to move out of her BFF Kylie Jenner’s home, but she was officially on “Don’t bring her ass over to my house” status with the entire family. And naturally, the stories started pouring out of E! and Page Six, followed by keyboard thugging from the oh-so-happy-to-be-here friends of the Kardashians—roles now filled by Malika Haqq and Larsa Pippen. Why are those women in their 30s and 40s arguing with a barely twenty-something?

In any event, that sort of plan could work on Tokyo Toni’s daughter. But as they’re surely learning now, it won’t work on someone considered an extended family member of the Smith family.

Woods appeared on Jada’s Facebook series, Red Table Talk, on March 1st to share her side of the story. And if Woods wasn’t already very much aware of how the Kardashian family plays it, Will Smith certainly was. Will knows Woods through her late father who worked as a sound engineer on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and he has only made one previous appearance on Red Table Talk. Knowing that he isn’t a regular guest, I laughed like hell when he FaceTimed into the show and dispelled the following advice to Woods:

“Take your medicine and tell your truth,” Will said. “This is a part of what growing up is…this world is not gonna break you. We won’t allow it.”

That is a very slick, Hollywood professional way of saying, “I’m not about to let that family play you.”

Smith did say something curious, though. When he said, “I watched you become a woman and I saw that one day we’d be here,” I interpreted that as, “I warned you about them.” After Will finished, it got even better because Jada did not let her off the hook.

“There’s a family that feels betrayed by you,” Jada explained. She made Jordyn recount exactly what happened and acknowledge how it impacted peoples’ lives, and then pushed her to offer real contrition. I am so into Jada Pinkett Smith interview style, which is a mixture of concerned auntie and 1980s Barbara Walters or Oprah Winfrey.

And while some complained about it online, Jada was right to note that, as a Black woman, Jordyn Woods will experience far more harassment online no matter what. Not only is that unfair, it is hypocritical. Jordyn Woods was wrong, but it’s not like select Kardashian sisters haven’t been accused of similar behavior in their romantic lives.

Jordyn still might have been acting like the villain of many an R&B ballad, but her Red Table Talk chat was the best confessional performance I’ve seen since me right before a mass in 1998. Still, Khloé Kardashian remains unimpressed.

Khloé, I understand that you’re hurting and you have every right to be, but uh, have you met you? You’re celebrating Tristan for addressing the situation privately when your family has sold its privacy for a decades-long reality show? Keeping Up With The Kardashians is probably already rushing an episode tied around this drama, but you know, sure, okay.

With all due respect, Tristan Thompson has been a thot so no one can break up a home where a man already has his penis out the door the majority of the time. Khloé’s mission to malign Jordyn backfired, and I won’t link to any of the tweets mocking Khloé for her statement, but ouch. She is getting dragged up and down Cardi B’s internet, bless her heart. I hope Kris Jenner takes Khloé’s phone away, and I hope that family leaves Jordyn Woods alone.

I don’t condone what Woods did, but as she explains it, her behavior wasn’t actually as bad as first reported. She deserved to have her say and protect her image from being permanently tainted. Not only did she get to have her say with an A-list family who commands attention, she did so on a platform with s a much wider reach than the reality show that launched the Kardashians into fame. Jordyn Woods’ episode of Red Table Talk netted more than 6 million views in three hours.

In pursuit of overcoming her thot tale, she beat them at their own game with slicked back hair, subtle makeup, and some A-list friends. My hero.

Designer Space: Simple Drama

CANADIAN HOME TRENDS CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE KITCHEN’S DESIGN?

ANNIE KANG We wanted to create a multi-purpose space with an island designed to be used as a food prep area, dining table, work table, breakfast nook, bar and entertaining area with a great backyard view. We also included an open shelf cabinet unit to house cookbooks and decorative elements! The use of two simple, contrasting colors, in a polished high-gloss finish, results in a space that is both dramatic and exquisite. Using the same black for the surround moulding brings the kitchen together.

CHT HOW DO YOU DESIGN AN ON-TREND YET TIMELESS KITCHEN?

AK Slab doors are a timeless trend we have seen at Lucvaa since the company started in 2007. With all the advancements in technology, there are thousands of melamine products to choose from. The price range is wide so it can work with nearly any budget. You can choose from a range of colors, sheens and textures. Your choice of flat, high gloss to concrete, wood or metal textures will customize the look to suit your personal style.

CHT WHERE DID YOU SAVE AND WHERE DID YOU SPLURGE?

AK We saved on decorative hardware by choosing a Slab MDF Door with touch-to-open functionality. This gives the space a clean, modern look. We spent more of the budget for the cabinets’ aesthetic finishes and accessories to optimize the organization of the cabinetry. We used drawer organizers, pull-out pantry units, and pull-out spice racks. The homeowner chose to splurge on the countertops and the finishing touches for the space.

CHT CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE HOMEOWNERS?

AK The homeowner is a big pet lover so we included a pull-out feeding station for her pets. When she is entertaining, the feeding station disappears into the island.

Adventurous Drama in Sacramento

We’re ending 2018 on a bang with blogging legend Kasmira Kit (43). Sacramento-based Kasmira is a state emergency services analyst who has been blogging for 12 years, and posts an outfit almost every weekday. What a feat! Over the years, her style has remained so very recognizably her very own. It’s creative, unique, timeless, quirky, and beyond trends. Kasmira is an adventurous dresser who loves statement leggings and novelty hosiery. She’s also a master of maximal pattern mixing and unusual outfit combinations.

“Over the past five years, I’ve really committed to a limited color palette. I find it easier to wear my entire closet when the colors fall into a cohesive ‘story’. I used to wear every color but I found that a rainbow selection actually suppressed my creativity by overwhelming me with choice. I’d call my look Utilitarian Drama. (That has not changed!) I’m always torn between the extremes of being practical and being expressive. My daily outfits fall somewhere in the spectrum.”

Kasmira - 1

A fun jacket + turtleneck + statement skirt + novelty hosiery is one of Kasmira’s go-to outfit formulas. For this particular version, our 5’5” blogger has tucked a simple black turtleneck into an eye-catching, flowy midi skirt. Tucking the top streamlines the look and accentuates Kasmira’s svelte waist. So does the wide black belt. Her plaid, black, white, green and red skirt is the statement piece. The rest of the outfit cleverly works within the same colour palette. The cropped, waist-length moto jacket lengthens the leg line and adds a casual touch. The white hose with black polka dots are a quirky way to add some pattern mixing. Kasmira’s tassel necklace echoes the wood heel on her black loafers. The red crossbody ties the outfit together.

Kasmira - 2

Kasmira is a master pattern mixer and regularly combines dressy and sporty pieces. Here she’s wearing a brown leopard print shirt under a black and white patterned mini dress. The warm-toned leopard print is repeated in the sand-coloured pointy-toe booties, which bookends the look beautifully. At the same time, Kasmira’s grey updo picks up the colours in the cool-toned dress. Adding sporty statement leggings with see-through panels is unexpected and very Kasmira. The siky black pussy bow is the playful finishing touch. A fun and dressy juxtaposition against the sporty leggings.

Kasmira - 3

This is a fab example of Angie’s Arty Kimono Jacket with Denim outfit formula. Kasmira has paired light-wash denim shorts with a striped top that is cropped enough to showcase her brown patterned belt. The breezy kimono is an easy way to add a third piece to an outfit in warmer weather. It also creates a dramatic vibe that fits Kasmira’s style personality perfectly. The rugged cowboy boots work well with the faded denim shorts and bring the on-trend Western vibe into the look. Wearing boots with patterned insets is an unexpected and fun way to pattern mix. The brown necklace echoes the brown in the kimono and Kasmira’s belt. Soft peachy lipstick and she is ready to go.

Kasmira has been documenting her outfits for 12 years! I asked her where she keeps getting ideas for putting together an outfit she loves every day:

“I stay inspired by challenging myself to create a brand new ‘look’ every day. I’ve almost never repeated an outfit combination in 12 years. I believe there are (nearly) infinite possibilities within a finite wardrobe. I challenge myself to find those possibilities. I’m committed to avoiding disposable fashion and wearing my items until they fall apart (or no longer fit), so that means constantly exploring new combinations. I also find inspiration from other bloggers, any ‘new’ item I add to my wardrobe, and my archives.”

Kasmira - 4

Shocking pink with earthy brown tones is an unusual yet very fun colour combo. By wearing the sweater over a dress and adding a belt, Kasmira has created a faux-skirt look that makes her dress an even more versatile wardrobe piece. The gauze, floaty fabric of the knee-length dress creates dressy elegance. The felted balls on the sweater are a playful touch that is trademark Kasmira. Her brown high-heeled boots lengthen the leg line and work well with the brown frock. Sporting floral patterned tights with the floral dress is a creative pattern mixing move that adds extra pizzazz. Note how the colour of the sweater is repeated in the pink flowers on the tights. Pink lipstick and long, pink feather earrings tie everything together.

Kasmira - 5

Kasmira didn’t intentionally bookend this outfit, but mentioned that she really likes how the greyish taupe boots and her gray hair look with an almost all-black outfit. She’s layered a slim-fit wrap sweater over a black and white striped tee and tucked both into high-waisted black jeggings. The on-trend high rise and button-fly are emphasized by adding a black belt with oversized silver buckle. A hip-length black velvet blazer adds soft textural interest. So do the over-the-knee suede boots that are high contrast against the black skinnies. Opting for light-coloured over-the-knee boots makes them stand out more and creates extra drama. The horizontal line created by the high-contrast top of the boots is offset by the length of the boots, which lengthens the leg upward from the calves. Soft pink lipstick and a dainty silver necklace complete this polished casual outfit.

Kasmira - 6

A bold outfit that has Kasmira’s name written all over it. She’s paired a straight, mid-thigh sweater dress with eye-catching galaxy print leggings. I love that the blue in the cosy striped sweater dress is brighter than the navy you usually see in Breton-striped items. It’s also the same blue that comes back in the bold leggings and the bright floral patterned scarf. This helps tie everything together beautifully, and makes the advanced pattern mixing work so well. Adding an on-trend longer length blazer in light toffee adds warmth to the otherwise cool-toned colour palette. So do the cognac cowboy boots. And aren’t they the perfect way to add a classic Western vibe to our blogger’s space cowboy leggings!

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Kasmira’s bold, dramatic style. Let us know in the comments, and then hop on over to her website to browse the rest of her wonderful outfits.

JWoww ‘Wants What Is Best’ for Her Kids Amid Roger Drama

Jenni “JWoww” Farley doesn’t want her ongoing drama with estranged husband Roger Mathews to have any impact on their children: daughter Meilani, 4, and son Greyson, 2.

“Jenni’s stance has been the same the whole time — she just wants what is best for their kids,” a source tells Us Weekly exclusively. “From the day [their split] became public, Jenni has not commented about it. She wants her kids to be OK and she doesn’t want her kids to go on social media someday and see that their parents are fighting.”

The Jersey Shore: Family Vacation star, 32, filed a restraining order against Mathews, 43, in the early hours of Friday, December 14, after the pair got into an argument. He shared a series of 10 videos on Instagram about the drama, including some filmed in the back of a police car.

So I took umbrage to it, and a little bit of a disagreement I would say ensued,” Mathews said in one clip.

He went on to call Farley “completely, uncontrollably emotional” and claimed that she told their kids that “their dad is a piece of s–t and she’s sorry she ever had children with him.”

The MTV personality shared her side of the story in a statement shared on Instagram later on Friday morning. She said in part that she had the authorities involved “as she felt it was in her best interest, and in the best interests of her children to do so.”

Farley’s costar Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi also spoke out in her defense, in addition to sharing security footage of Farley talking to police. “My best friend has been through A LOT these past few months and my heart breaks for her,” Polizzi, 31, wrote on Instagram before calling her BFF “a damn good mother.”

Farley filed for divorce from Mathews in September after three years of marriage. However, they continued to spend time together in the weeks that followed, and Mathews told Us exclusively in November that he and Farley were “working on things.”

Brad Pitt Is Sure That Angelina Jolie Is Going To Create Drama When It Comes To The Holidays

More than two years after they separated, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still in the middle of their nasty divorce and custody battle, and a new report claims it is going to be a drama-filled holiday season for the former couple. Could the strange move Jolie’s lawyers made this past week be an indication of unusual things to come?

According to Radar Online, one of Jolie’s lawyers, Joseph Mannis, took the odd step of filing a formal motion with the court to notify them that he will be out of town for a week at Thanksgiving and two weeks at Christmas.

Because of this, Mannis has requested that the court doesn’t have any hearings between Jolie and Pitt during those times.

“Brad’s lawyers are going to ignore something that comes up with the kids that needs immediate attention from the court just because Joe is on vacation?” asked an insider.

The source says that the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood star is concerned that his ex will be ready “to stir up drama” during the holiday season and is going to continue her attempts to make Pitt look like the bad guy, especially if he needs to go to court while her attorney isn’t in town.

However, Pitt isn’t going to let Jolie’s antics keep him from spending time with their six children, says the insider.

Jolie recently made things even worse with Pitt when she threw out a bunch of items that he had left with the kids. The source says that Pitt left antiques, family heirlooms, and sentimental trinkets like old toys with the kids, and when Jolie found them, she threw them all out “without hesitation.”

Even though the divorce drags on, Pitt has moved on and is dating. However, the chances of him walking the red carpet with another celebrity are pretty small, says a pal. Friends do think that Pitt will marry again, but they think he will end up with a woman who has a lower profile.

Insiders say that these last two years have been a nightmare for the actor. And, after decades of relationships with women like Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Juliette Lewis, Pitt wants to keep things more private instead of having a public relationship.

Sources say that Pitt is enjoying hanging out with his friends and meeting women through people he trusts, but his top priorities at the moment are his children, his work, and getting some sense of normalcy. He is casually dating, but right now everything is about the kids.

Brad Pitt has stayed relatively quiet since his split from Angelina Jolie, making only two public statements. An insider says he is trying to do what is best for his kids, but he is hurt. Ultimately, his friends want him to find peace and love again.

How the Boston Red Sox Brought Division Series Drama and Despair to the Bronx

At least we got an inning. Up until the bottom of the ninth inning at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, baseball’s division series round hadn’t exactly given fans their fill of October drama. Three series had already ended in three-game sweeps; Houston over Cleveland, Los Angeles over Atlanta, and Milwaukee making quick work of Colorado. And the Boston Red Sox were about to close out the series with their bitter division rivals, the New York Yankees, in four games.

Boston’s victory felt all but inevitable. The Red Sox took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth of Game 4. The Yankees hadn’t even mustered a hit the prior three innings. On Monday night, Boston destroyed the Yankees by a mammoth 16-1, to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Boston’s closer, the bearded, flame-throwing right-hander Craig Kimbrel — who hunches over and dangles his right arm like a bat’s wing before every pitch — was on the mound. New York was headed home.

But then the tension of the ninth inning escalated, entirely out of the blue. And unless you’re a die-hard Boston fan who just wanted three quick outs and a Sam Adams to celebrate, the theater was utterly delightful.

First Aaron Judge walked on four pitches. The nearly 50,000 fans at Yankee Stadium, woken by glimmer of hope, roared. Then Didi Gregorius singled. First and second, no outs, and the tying run — 6’6″, 245-pound slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who makes $ 25 million to blast prodigious home runs that tie up playoffs games and send Yankees fans into a state of ecstasy, was up at the plate.

Stanton took two long, lame swings at Kimbrel’s knuckle-curve balls on his way to a strikeout.

That took some air out of Yankee Stadium. But Kimbrel then issued another four-pitch walk, to first baseman Luke Voit, to load up the bases with one out. Forgive Yankees fans if they started booking train tickets to Boston for a deciding Game 5. Kimbrel was losing it on the mound. And his situation got worse moments later, when he plunked Neil Walker, sending Judge home, shaving another run off of Boston’s lead — it was now 4-2 — and keeping the bases very loaded with Yankees.

How was this happening? Now, Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, who hit ghastly .186 during this year, had a chance to redeem his frustrating regular season campaign with one swing. He fell behind 0-2, then worked the count full, before hacking at a 98 mph Kimbrel fastball, and sending the ball flying into left field.

The shot sounded mighty good off the bat. Game over? Walk-off grand slam? Some of the Red Sox, however, knew better.

“When it came off the bat, the launch angle was too high,” says Red Sox left fielder Andrew Benintendi, channeling a favorite metric of baseball’s geek analytic chattering class. “That was one of the higher pop-ups I’ve ever caught. Thank God it stayed in.”

Benintendi caught the ball on the warning track; Gregorius scored from third on the sacrifice fly, and the Yankees cut the lead to 4-3. But Boston got its second out; and the next batter, Gleyber Torres, hit a slow roller to third.

Slow enough to keep the season alive? Boston third baseman Eduardo Nunez charged in and fired the ball the first. Boston’s Steve Pearce stretched, barely keeping his foot on the bag. First base umpire Fieldin Culbreth called Torres out; Boston players began to embrace in front of the mound. The Yankees did their dude diligence and challenged the call. Replay confirmed Culbreth’s hunch, and Boston’s celebration properly commenced.

“That was weird,” says Boston second baseman Brock Holt, a master of understatement.

Boston whooped it up on the Yankee Stadium field, just like the Red Sox did in the last time these teams met in the playoffs — in 2004, when the Red Sox came back from an insurmountable 0-3 deficit, putting the Bronx to shame en route to the team’s first Word Series since 1918. As the Red Sox filed into a champagne-soaked clubhouse, a Yankee stadium attendant refused to hide his frustration in an empty hallway behind the visitors dugout. He simultaneously decried his team’s misfortune in the ninth inning, and baseball’s overall emphasis on the power game.

“We had every opportunity,” the attendant shouted. “But those a–holes had to go for the home run ball.” Presumably Stanton’s strikeout, and Sanchez’s long out, left this observer dissatisfied. “Just put the ball in play! You don’t have to go for the f—ing home run every time. That’s what Sanchez was doing. Going for the f—ing home run.”

The Yankees smacked 267 home runs this regular season, a new record for a single team. But they hit zero long balls in their two home playoff game losses to the Red Sox. Boston starting pitcher Rick Porcello, the 2016 Cy Young Award winner who grew up across the Hudson River in New Jersey, held the Yankees to a single run in five innings. (He grew up a Mets fan). Veteran ace C.C. Sabathia, one of only three holdovers from New York’s last World Series team in 2009, got himself in trouble in the third inning, with no score, first by hitting Benintendi with a pitch. A Pearce single moved Benintendi to third; J.D. Martinez drove Benintendi home with a sacrifice fly. Sabathia got the second out on a grounder, but Ian Kinsler’s double sailed over the head of left fielder Brett Gardner — the second holdover from the last Yankees World Series team, nine years ago. Gardner seemed to misjudge the ball: catching Kinsler’s rope would have been a difficult task regardless, but Gardner’s footwork did him no favors. Boston led 2-0.

Once again, New York Yankees left a starting pitcher in the game longer than the fans wanted. On Monday, Boone left Luis Severino in a game in which he was clearly struggling: Boston commenced with an onslaught. Here, David Robertson — the third Yankee who played for the 2009 champions — was warming up in the bullpen. But Boone stuck with Sabathia: he rewarded his manager by giving up another run on a Eduaro Nunez line drive single. 3-0 Boston. Boone’s decisions give New York’s always rational fans sports talk grist for an entire off-season, if not more. Though when Boone finally called in a reliever, Zach Britton, to start the fourth, he gave up a lead-off home run to Christian Vazquez that gave Boston a 4-0 advantage. As if to stick it to the Yanks a bit, the Red Sox called on their best starting pitcher, Chris Sale, to shut down the Yankees in the eighth inning: he retired the side in order, before handing the ball over to Kimbrel for the unforgettable ninth.

In the Red Sox locker room after the game, a Boston player sprayed Budweiser on Sale. “Check out my cutter!” he said, angling the alcohol. The team blasted “New York, New York,” in the clubhouse, an expert bit of trolling of Judge, who blared the song outside Boston’s clubhouse after New York won Game 2 of the series at Fenway Park — the team’s only victory of the playoffs against Boston.

So now Boston moves on to face defending champ Houston — who swept Cleveland in the other American League Division Series — in the League Championship Series. For baseball nerds, Houston-Boston is a scintillating match-up of the sport’s two best teams this season. While the Red Sox won 108 regular season games, the Astros — those geniuses, dare we say — weren’t far behind, as they tallied 103 victories. Over in the National League, the surprising Milwaukee Brewers have won 11 games in a row; it’ll be up to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who after a slow start through May have played like the team that was just one game away from a World Series victory a year ago, to stall Milwaukee’s momentum.

The four teams left are the class of baseball. When it comes to high-stakes drama, the early rounds may have just offered that ninth inning in the Bronx. But the nice part: October’s just begun.
