Black-Owned Businesses You Can Support During Small Business Week

It’s National Small Business Week! That’s right, there’s a whole week dedicated to supporting small businesses. There are a ton of events around the week, including a free 2-day online seminar to help small business, Twitter chats, hackathons and more.

According to NIelsen, the Black community has a combined $ 1.2 trillion in buying power which is more than enough to support a lot of #buyingblack. Also, according to a national small business survey, Black-owned businesses are among the fastest-growing in the nation, with a 400% increase in new Black businesses from 2017 to 2018.

Here are some small Black businesses you can support this week:

DETROIT, MI:

Detroit Vegan Soul

Business: Food

Owned by Chef Erika Boyd and Kirsten Ussery

About: “Detroit Vegan Soul was born out of our desire to make good, healthy food accessible to everyone, and to break the cycle of diet related diseases in our families and community. We started our journey in February 2012 with a meal delivery and catering company which served the greater Downtown Detroit area. The response was overwhelming!” (via their website)

ATLANTA, GA:

Abielle Creations

Business: Apparel

Mitchell is self-taught artist who has created over 500 art pieces including 40 murals. In 2016, she turned her art into wearable creations and has since been featured in Vogue and worked with Lupita N’yong’o and reality star Yandy Smith.

BROOKLYN, N.Y.

Lit Brooklyn

Business: Home Decor

Owner: Denequa Williams

“Smartest decision I ever made for myself was surrounding myself with goal chasers, hard workers, and people who continue to shock themselves with the accolades and accomplishments that they receive. All of my friends are killing it, in some shape and form, and that encourages me and pushes me to be the best version of myself daily.” (Essence.com)

BROOKLYN, N.Y.

Scotch Porter

Business: Personal Grooming

Owner: Calvin Quallis

“Transformation is a powerful concept. It’s the feeling you get when the barber finishes a fresh cut, removes the cape, brushes you off and hands you the mirror to reveal the cleanest version of you. Like magic, your swagger soars to 100, and you’re ready to take on the world.

“That feeling is what inspired me to quit my cushy corporate job to follow my passion for making people feel their best. I started small, opening a barber shop in my neighborhood just as my mother had done when I was a kid. From my kitchen, I began experimenting with botanicals and other ingredients that have NOT been clinically shown to be toxic or carcinogenic, creating products to solve the problems our customers talked about.

We’re married to the idea that men should be able to take care of themselves and not have to break the bank. That they shouldn’t have to use products packed with harmful chemicals just to look and feel like a boss,” – Calvin Quallis.

Hammer and Nails; 10 locations, 7 on the way

Owner: Mike Eliot

Business: Personal Services

While it may now be a growing success story, Hammer and Nails did begin with one Hollywood location. Owner Mike Eliot envisioned a manicure/pedicure experience for men in an atmosphere they would relate to. They did, and now it’s a nationwide business with franchising options for other potential owners. Eliot started the company in 2013. After appearing on Shark Tank and being rejected, former screenwriter Eliot was able to raise 175K from investors who saw him on the show.

“Part of the motivation is to create opportunities for people like me. I wanted to create a business that could be replicated, and empower other African-Americans and other people to go into business for themselves and devote my time to helping them succeed. You can grow quickly through franchising, but it is also a way to impact other people’s lives.” Mike Eliot, Forbes.com

Kandi Burruss Gets NSFW With Todd Tucker During Dungeon Show — Sparks Debate Between Fans

Kandi Burruss’ dungeon tour has begun and is a big hit in the cities that the ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star is taking it. One of the singer’s performances found Kandi in a NSFW position with her husband Todd Tucker — and fans definitely feel a type of way about it.

Todd uploaded a photo of his wife’s hand on his private area alongside a caption that read: “When she touches your dog in front of a sold out crowd! Dungeon Chicago!”

The sexy tour idea stemmed from a shocking storyline on ‘RHOA.’

Porsha Williams accused Kandi and Todd of plotting to drug and sexually assault her in their ‘sex dungeon.’ The season nine reunion revealed that it was none other than Phaedra Parks who put the nasty bug in Porsha’s ear.

Although the Xscape singer admitted that the rumor was bad for business. she turned lemons into lemonade by creating a dungeon-themed party.

“I wanted to take that whole rumor and turn it into something that was fun and more of a positive situation meaning that I wanted to make it fun, positive, and lucrative,” she explained on the Bravo aftershow.

However, some fans think that Kandi is being hypocritical by hosting the burlesque-themed shindig.

When she touches your dog in front of a sold out crowd! Dungeon Chicago!

Underneath Todd’s photo that was reposted by a Housewife fan page, one followers said: “But she was so devastated by the ‘rumor’ and it “tarnished her ‘brand ‘ now she tryna capitalize off of it.”

Another chimed in with: “okay so phaedra gave you this idea and you still mad but yet making a bag”

Some social media users feel that Kandi’s show is completely inappropriate.

“Kandi is a freak, she’s comfortable showcasing the open marriage she and her husband been having. In oder to keep her marriage they have to been other people in their bedroom. Is called Hollywood. There’s nothing normal about that life. This is the example they’re setting for her daughter. Ok I 👀

“Now I see why his daughter doesn’t like to be around them in the public eye….just doing way to much,” a commentator added.

There were people who came to Kandi’s defense by saying she turned a negative situation into an experience everyone can enjoy.

What is your opinion on the ‘Welcome to the Dungeon’ tour?

How to Avoid Discrimination During Hiring

When you are looking for a new job, your Cover Letter and
Resume act as a formal introduction to a potential employer. These documents advise
hiring managers of who you are, your past experience and education, and how
you, compared to all the other candidates, are the ideal person for the job.

With your Cover Letter and Resume, you want to showcase the
best possible version of yourself and provide any information that is necessary
for you to be considered. You also want to ensure the details you disclose
about yourself don’t give an unprofessional hiring manager an opportunity to
discriminate against you.

In this post, we cover whether it is legal for an employer to discriminate against you when reviewing your application, and a few areas of your Cover Letter and Resume that you can modify to avoid discrimination in this stage of your job search.

Is it Legal to Discriminate as an Employer?

It is not legal
for an employer to do or say anything that can be construed as discrimination
on the basis of skin color, sex, ethnicity, religion, disability, marital or
familial status, and more (called the “prohibited grounds for discrimination”).

Discrimination can occur as an obvious prejudicial statement (for instance, if someone were to say they don’t hire women for a particular role because they aren’t strong enough) or it can be camouflaged and may sometimes seem unintentional (such as when an employer asks when you graduated and then uses this information to determine your approximate age). In fact, there’s a number of questions that employers should avoid asking applicants as they could be considered discriminatory if certain information—information protected by discrimination laws—is revealed and used to make a hiring decision.

The problem is that it can sometimes be difficult to prove
that you’ve been denied employment based on discrimination, especially during
the hiring stage. This is why you should do your best to give prospective employers
only what they need to consider your job application and avoid providing
information that could open you up to discrimination.

How Your Cover Letter or Resume Could Lead to Discrimination

Your Cover Letter and Resume are used to show a potential employer why you are the best candidate for a particular position in their company. Though employers should never use information that falls within prohibited grounds to make a hiring decision, you may be unable to prevent it from happening and, if it does, you may have difficulty proving that it did.

What you can do is tailor your Cover Letter and Resume so
that it doesn’t include details that could be used to discriminate against you,
particularly with your past or current experience, your graduation year, and
your picture.

Your Past or Current Experience

Understandably, you want to include all your relevant
experience on your Resume; however, if your past or current experience involves
anything regarding prohibited grounds (such as volunteer work for your local
church), you may want to try rewording the job item to help prevent
discrimination.

For instance, let’s say you’ve volunteered at your heritage
center for the last three years and have done numerous tasks that are relevant
and transferable to a position you are applying for. Though this experience is
great and those skills should be included in your Resume, you want to be
cautious about including anything that could disclose your ethnicity to a
potential employer (like the name of your heritage center).

Instead, candidates can use generic terms to describe a past
or current position. For instance, instead of using the name of your heritage
center (e.g. the “Portuguese Cultural Center”), simply use “Cultural Center”.

It’s not always easy or possible to use generic names for
places you’ve worked, such as a church or mosque, but do what you can in order
to ensure your resume is reviewed objectively.

Your Graduation Date or Picture

Employers are not allowed to ask for an applicant’s age or for
any information that may reveal their age. Because of this, it may be in your
best interest to remove things that could reveal or imply your age, such as:

  • Your graduation year, especially the year you graduated high school (the year you graduated can often tell someone your approximate age)
  • Your picture (though this can be a common practice outside of the United States, you should avoid including a picture as it informs prospective employers of your age as well as your gender, ethnicity, and other details that may fall under the prohibited grounds)
  • Your unrelated hobbies or extracurricular activities (certain hobbies or activities can imply your age, such as involvement in a college improv group may suggest that the person is part of a younger age group)
  • Past courses or certificates (in some instances, the date you received a past course or certificate can also date you; consider removing ones that aren’t relevant or removing the year of completion to avoid this)

Keep in mind, there are instances when being asked your age
can be legal, if the question is worded properly. For example, if a position
involves the sale of alcohol, the person who is hired needs to be above the age
of majority and legally capable of selling those items to others. In this
instance, it is legal for a prospective employer to ask an applicant if they
are above the legal age for their state.

Sending in Your Resume

Whether or not you make changes to your Cover Letter and Resume is up to you (they’re your Cover Letter and Resume, after all), but being aware of how certain details can be used against you is important. Although employers are legally prohibited from discriminating against applicants under the protected grounds, it isn’t always easy to prove discrimination has occurred, especially during hiring.

Tailoring your resume so certain details (like your age,
ethnicity, religious beliefs, and more) are not included can help you avoid
potential discrimination in the workplace. Use your judgment, and, no matter
what you do, be sure your Cover Letter and Resume showcase your best skills and
abilities for prospective employers.

Seth Meyers Goes Off on Senate Republicans for ‘Obsessing’ Over Hillary Clinton’s Emails During Barr Testimony

NBC

Late Night host Seth Meyers dedicated his “A Closer Look” segment Wednesday night to today’s testimony of Attorney General William Barr in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Barr, who was handpicked for the AG role by President Trump, had to answer for why his four-page summary of the Mueller Report “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of the report—this according to the office of Robert Mueller.

“So now we know that the guy who spent almost two years putting together a 448-page report about a criminal conspiracy to interfere in the 2016 election complained that Trump’s handpicked attorney general misled the country about that report. That’s huge news,” explained Meyers. “And yet, when they had the chance to ask Barr about that news in a hearing today, Republican senators mostly acted like it didn’t happen.”

Here’s Why There Was A Flying Tortilla During the National Championship

Leave it to a piece of food to crash the national championship game.

Someone flung a tortilla onto the court during the national championship in Minneapolis on Monday night, and apparently it’s not the first time an incident like this has gone down.

As the Virginia Cavaliers faced off against the Red Raiders on the hardwood during the first half, a tortilla landed in the Texas Tech section to be picked up by Virginia’s Kyle Guy who gave it to a referee. The game even had to be paused.

People were – it may not surprise – surprised to see the tortilla enter the arena.

Who throws a tortilla? And why?

Here’s why tortilla throwing at Texas Tech is a thing.

The genesis of the obscure tortilla toss fan “sport” began when Texas Tech football students started flinging the plastic tops to their sodas on the field back in 1989, according to Viva the Matadors.

Tortilla throwing at Texas Tech endures

Then the tradition morphed into tortillas for a

“in a little bit of cheeky fun, tortillas were thrown before the game. The Red Raiders went on to upset the Aggies, and we just kind of kept on doing it before games after that.”

Evidently, the flat tortillas were “cheap, and fairly easy to hide on your person.”

But the disruptive tortilla wasn’t the only flatbread in the house. And multiple tortilla-holding fans had their traditional tokens confiscated.

The Virginia Cavaliers defeated the Red Raiders 85 to 77. But shout out to the tortilla, a real most valuable player shaking up the night.

Wrestler Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart Tackled During WWE Hall of Fame Speech

(NEW YORK) — Wrestler Bret “The Hitman” Hart was tackled by a spectator Saturday while he was giving a speech during the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The attacker was promptly subdued by several people, including other wrestlers, who came to Hart’s defense. Hart, 61, is OK.

The person ran toward the ring from the crowd, spectator Alan Fisher told The Associated Press.

“I couldn’t believe that the security had missed him in the first place and the next thing you know there was Shane McMahon and Travis Brown on top of him the crowd was going crazy booing,” Fisher said. “Everyone was cheering when one of the wrestlers punched him.”

New York City Police arrested 26-year-old Zachary Madsen. He faces assault and criminal trespass charges. An email to the district attorney seeking someone who could comment on Madsen’s behalf wasn’t immediately answered.

Several shocked onlookers posted footage of the tackle online.

The induction event resumed, with Hart continuing his speech, after the fan was taken into custody.

“He should have never attacked Bret Hart especially at such a special moment in his life,” Fisher said.

Where to travel during the year to catch some rays

For many, there always comes the point where you are desperate for some sunshine, particularly in the colder months. Of course, sometimes it isn’t immediately apparent where is good to go and when, so we need to do a bit of digging to find our ideal destination. Thankfully, there are plenty of places that are blessed to have sea, sand, and sunshine almost all year round; and there are others that have a calm, warm serenity that will help quench that travel thirst. So for those of you who wish to soak up some vitamin D, here are some suggestions:

Where history and heat intertwine

Rome has been widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and historical cities in the world. You will need to be vigilant about what time of year you travel as they still have winter months, only perhaps not quite as cold. The best months to go, if you are looking for some warmth, are between April and September, with the hottest months being July and August ranging between a whopping 86-90 degrees. You will undoubtedly need some sunscreen in between all those sightseeing tourist adventures.

Why not somewhere closer to home?

Las Vegas! Sometimes, you don’t want a super long flight to reach your destination, so why not go somewhere a little bit closer to home? Vegas is in the middle of the desert, so you’re almost guaranteed amazing weather with a whole bundle of fun to have while you’re there! It is all about the temperature, and Vegas has it; highs of 100 degrees in the summer will have you baking a lovely tan in no time!

Where to travel during the year to catch some rays

You won’t need your temperature calendar for this one

If you are not on a budget and you desperately need to take off that winter coat, then Dubai is the place to go. It is incredibly popular, with sources suggesting that locals are outnumbered at six to one by British and American expats and tourists. However, sunshine is guaranteed in this rich, sunny country with temperatures reportedly never dropping below 70 degrees and heights of 108 degrees. At the moment, Dubai is a must-see, with the tallest building in the world and the largest flower garden; and that’s not to mention the beautiful beaches, the dinner cruises, the water parks, and so on.

It’s all about Australia

The Aussies are known for their fantastic climate and gorgeous landscapes – they’ve pretty much got it all! You have so many places to choose from depending on what experience you’re looking for – whether you want a backpacking holiday or a luxurious week in the city. The temperatures change depending on where you are in Australia, but no matter where you go, it is probably going to feel like summer.

Where to travel during the year to catch some rays

Choosing a holiday destination can be tough, but wherever you end up, you will likely have a better time if the sun is shining. So, now you are ready. Pack those bags, put on your sunscreen, and book those flights!

Avoid Hidden Costs During Your Air Conditioner Replacement

An air conditioner replacement is a smart way to drastically increase the value and energy efficiency of your home. However, installing a new AC unit can be a big expense for homeowners. How do you ensure that your air conditioning replacement stays in budget, and avoid hidden costs that could break the bank? Knowledge is key. Read on for Modernize’s advice to help you prepare for unexpected costs during your air conditioning project.

Basic Costs of an Air Conditioning Replacement

Begin by determining your baseline air conditioning replacement budget. The average air conditioning replacement cost ranges between $ 3,500 to $ 7,525. This includes the unit and the installation.

The cost of your project will be impacted by considerations like:

Square Footage: Upon arriving at your property, the HVAC contractor will measure the square footage of your home. This will help determine the size unit needed to efficiently cool your home. A larger home will require a more powerful unit, which will cost more.

Repairs: The contractor recommendation may include upgrading attic or crawl space insulation, resealing of windows and doors, or repairing breaches in exterior walls where conditioned air might escape. These precautions may add to the total cost.

The Unit: An air conditioning unit with a higher energy efficiency ratio will cost more, but often yield a better return on investment over time. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER is a rating that notes the efficiency of the cooling system. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system. The minimum standard SEER is 13 for air conditioners. Most modern air conditioners have a SEER that ranges from 13 to 21. The Energy Efficiency Ratio or EER is a rating that bases its energy efficiency rating on how the unit would react to an outside temperature of 95 degrees, an inside temperature of 80 degrees and humidity of 50 percent.

Labor: Labor costs will vary depending on the size of the crew, their experience, and the scope of your project. However, Modernize encourages homeowners to not select a contractor based on price alone. The quality of work is especially important when it comes to home repair projects. While some aspects of an air conditioning replacement can be DIY, the smartest choice for such an important project is to partner with a reputable contractor. The right contractor will be able to help you set (and stick) to your air conditioning replacement budget and have the experience to foresee any hidden costs.

Permitting: Depending on where you live, your contractor may also need to secure permits to complete an air conditioning replacement. Your contractor will manage the permitting process, but be prepared for the cost. Depending on your region, an air conditioning replacement permit may be a flat rate, or it could vary based on your home’s size or value.

The Most Common Hidden Air Conditioning Replacement Costs

No matter how well prepared and researched your air conditioning replacement budget may be, keep in mind that the installation may uncover additional costs that are beyond you or your contractor’s control. Especially if you live in an older house, it is wise to be prepared. With that in mind, some common unexpected costs to be prepared for include:

Replacing Damaged Ductwork: Your home’s air duct system delivers warm or cooled air to different rooms and areas. This duct system is essential for your home’s comfort and energy efficiency— and is very delicate. Ductwork can easily become damaged, ripped, or tangled. Discuss with your contractor if you notice any problems.

Rotten Wall Studs: Wall studs are susceptible to rot in moisture-heavy areas of your home (like in basements). This is not always easy to detect. Your contractor may find issues after the drywall has been removed.

Electrical Upgrades: Older homes might not have sufficient power available to handle the increased demand with a new unit. Similarly, if other appliances have recently been added, it may max out the electrical panels capacity. If you have an older home, discuss the impact of a new unit on your home.

Drywall Repairs: For air conditioning ducts that back up at a wall or ceiling, drywall is usually cut to fit the outer edges. If your new unit is a different shape or style, drywall cuts from the previous unit may need to be repaired.

Keeping Your Air Conditioning Replacement on Budget

Now that you have the knowledge of the costs —both planned and unplanned— to expect during your air conditioning replacement, all that’s left is to ensure you stick to your budget. To do that, you can:

  • If you can wait, have your new system installed in the fall or spring. Contractors are usually less busy during these seasons and are willing to offer off-season discounts to homeowners.
  • Leave 15-20 percent of wiggle room in your budget. This will allow you to take any hidden issues in stride without impacting the rest of your air conditioning replacement. This may seem like a large buffer, but it’s better to plan ahead and for the unexpected.
  • Be transparent with your contractor about your budget. Let them know about your budget constraints up front. This will help them determine the most realistic way to reach your desired end result and help them as they purchase supplies for the project.

All in all, having a reliable and honest air conditioning contractor is perhaps the easiest way to avoid hidden costs during an air conditioning replacement. Take advantage of Modernize’s tools to find a trusted local contractor.

Emilia Clarke Discusses Surviving Life-Threatening Brain Aneurysms During Her Early Game of Thrones Days

Emilia Clarke has opened up about surviving two life-threatening brain aneurysms during the early days of Game of Thrones.

In an article for the New Yorker, Clarke spoke publicly for the first time about suffering two brain aneurysms, the first of which struck shortly after she finished filming her scenes as Daenerys Targaryen for season 1 of Game of Thrones. She revealed that she experienced her first aneurysm at 24 years old while working out with her trainer.

“I immediately felt as though an elastic band were squeezing my brain. I tried to ignore the pain and push through it, but I just couldn’t. I told my trainer I had to take a break,” she wrote. “Somehow, almost crawling, I made it to the locker room. I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill. Meanwhile, the pain—shooting, stabbing, constricting pain—was getting worse. At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged.”

Clarke was rushed to the hospital where she underwent “minimally invasive” surgery for a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a.k.a. bleeding in the brain. A little more than two weeks after her surgery, Clarke discovered that she was suffering from aphasia, a condition that impairs a person’s ability to process language. In Clarke’s case, she couldn’t recall her own name.

“I’d never experienced fear like that—a sense of doom closing in,” she said of that time period. “I could see my life ahead, and it wasn’t worth living. I am an actor; I need to remember my lines. Now I couldn’t recall my name…In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug. I asked the medical staff to let me die. My job—my entire dream of what my life would be—centered on language, on communication. Without that, I was lost.”

The aphasia passed after about a week, but before Clarke left the hospital, she was told that she had a smaller aneurysm on the other side of her brain that could “pop” at any time. Two years later, when she went in for a brain scan after finishing season 3 of Game of Thrones, doctors told her that the aneurysm had doubled in size and it would be best to “take care of it.”

Although she was promised a relatively simple operation, the procedure failed and Clarke was left with a massive brain bleed that required a subsequent fully invasive surgery. But in spite of all the complications, Clarke said that she has fully recovered in the years since.

“I have healed beyond my most unreasonable hopes,” she wrote. “I am now at a hundred per cent.”

Neil Jones wanted to protect wife Katya during Strictly kiss scandal

OHMYGOSSIP — Neil Jones’ first reaction when his wife Katya Jones told him she had kissed her ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ partner Seann Walsh was to make sure she was OK.
The ballroom professionals’ marriage was rocked last year when the Russian dancer was pictured locking lips with comedian Seann after a night out drinking in a pub, but Neil insists that when she told him what had happened his “natural” response was to want to protect his spouse.
In a joint interview on ITV show ‘Lorraine’, Neil, 36, said: “For me it was a major shock, and I appreciated that Katya told me before I saw it. ‘Strictly’ were fantastic with me and with us all, they were supporting us all and helping us.
“It was that shock factor, and then for me I was actually more worried about Katya because I could see what was going to happen, and I was like as long as she’s going to be OK. It was a natural reaction, of course [I love her] because we’ve been together for a long time.”
Katya, 29, accepts it was a tough moment in their relationship but insists she and Neil – who she married in August 2013 – are now stronger than ever.
She said: “There was lots of different emotions, of course, and we’ve gone through that. And I think now that we’ve moved on, you might even forgot how you felt at that moment … Look, 10 years of being together and that’s not for nothing. We’ve gone through so many things together.”
Neil added: “The trust is there.”
Katya has nothing but regret when she thinks about her kiss with Seann, 33, but insists it is time for people to move on from the smooch because she and Neil have.
She said: “[I regret it]. Of course, you just don’t realise the extent of the damage and the people you affect, families, my family, that moment you don’t. But then it’s the whole show, obviously that was horrible, all the professionals and dancers were constantly asked about it and that was unnecessary from me, absolutely.
“Even the fact that we’re still talking about it. It’s like, we’re over it, I think everyone else is over it, let’s just move on.”
Echoing his wife’s sentiment, Neil added: “I was getting messages on Instagram saying, ‘You’ve got to leave her’. But that’s what’s wrong, you know? I always feel that’s what’s wrong at the moment, everybody just looks at things, it’s a quick relationship, we’ve been together for 10 years. For me, it was just important, the understanding, I just needed to speak to Katya, I just needed to be with her in that moment. For me, I felt they overreacted.
“There’s worse things in the world going on at the moment. Every time it keeps coming up, anything happens and they mention it, I’m like, ‘Come on…’”
Asked by host Lorraine Kelly if she’s still in contact with Seann, Katya said: “No.”
To show the world that their marriage is very much on track, Neil and Katya are touring their own show ‘Somnium: A Dancer’s Dream’ which is inspired by their romance and their life together.
Explaining the inspiration behind the dance extravaganza, Neil said: “It’s based on our story. There’s moments in, within the story, it’s not about what happened there, it’s about a World Championships.”

The 10 Most Exciting March Madness Match-Ups That Could Happen During the 2019 NCAA Tournament

The NCAA tournament, March Madness, the Big Dance, whatever you want to call it, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for college basketball fans.

Selection Sunday has come and gone and the field of 64 Division I men’s basketball teams that will compete for the 2019 National Championship is set— with the exception of the four teams that will be determined by play-in games on Tuesday and Wednesday, of course. This year’s Final Four will take place in Minneapolis, Minn. from April 6 – 8, with the national championship title game set for Monday, April 8.

In the mix this March are three No. 1 seeds from the Atlantic Coast Conference — Duke, Virginia and North Carolina — as well as the fourth and final one-seed, Gonzaga, and a slew of other programs gunning for an upset against the four top-ranked teams.

Brackets will almost certainly be busted and at least one Cinderella story will hopefully be told as the tournament plays out, but in the meantime let’s take a look ahead at 10 of the most exciting potential match-ups that could happen in the 2019 NCAA tournament.

Match-up: Tennessee (2) vs. Purdue (3)

Round: Sweet Sixteen

The Volunteers and Boilermakers may not be defensive powerhouses — their defenses are ranked 34th and 32nd in the nation, respectively, according to KenPom — but with the No. 3 and No. 5 offenses in play, this could be a high-scoring second weekend match-up to look out for.

Match-up: Duke (1) vs. Virginia Tech (4)

Round: Sweet Sixteen

The Hokies pulled off a decisive upset when they came up against the Blue Devils during regular-season conference play in February. Of course, the caveat to that win is that Duke’s star freshman, Zion Williamson, sat the game out with a sprained right knee. Williamson is back and slamming down more dunks than ever, but that doesn’t mean Virginia Tech won’t somehow find an answer to the Blue Devils’ 6-foot-7-inch, 285-pound forward.

Match-up: North Carolina (1) vs. Kentucky (2)

Round: Elite Eight

When these two storied basketball programs last met in March, North Carolina’s Luke Maye hit the game-winning shot with just 0.3 seconds left to send the Tar Heels to the Final Four on the way to their 2017 National Championship. Not to mention that the 2018 CBS Sports Classic game that these two played in December came down to the final minutes — Kentucky pulled off the win. An Elite Eight match-up between the one and two-seeds in the Midwest would almost certainly be another one for the books.

Match-up: Duke (1) vs. Michigan State (2)

Michigan State Spartans guard Foster Loyer #3 and Michigan State Spartans players celebrate after defeating the Michigan Wolverines in a Big Ten Tournament Championship game between the Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans at the United Center in Chicago, IL on March 17, 2019.

Round: Elite Eight

Straight off a come-from-behind victory against their in-state rival Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament Championship, Michigan State is entering the NCAA tournament on a hot streak. The only bad news is that the Spartans’ Kyle Ahrens suffered a gruesome ankle injury in Sunday’s game that could keep him on the bench for the remainder of the season. As the No. 1 overall seed, the Blue Devils are going to be a force to be reckoned with for any team, let alone one that isn’t at full strength.

Match-up: Virginia (1) vs. Villanova (6)

Elsa—Getty ImagesPhil Booth #5 of the Villanova Wildcats celebrates the 74-72 win over the Seton Hall Pirates during the Big East Championship Game at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 16, 2019.

Round: Elite Eight

After battling through a late-season slump to win the Big East Tournament Championship, Villanova could easily turn out to be one of the most dangerous teams ranked below the top three seed lines in this year’s tournament. On the other hand, after losing to the No. 16-seeded UMBC Golden Retrievers in the first-round of last year — a historic March Madness upset — the Cavaliers are back at No. 1 with something to prove.

Match-up: Kentucky (2) vs. Kansas (4)

Andy Lyons—Getty ImagesLagerald Vick #24 of the Kansas Jayhawks shoots the ball against the Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on January 26, 2019.

Round: Elite Eight

If one-seed North Carolina and current-Tar-Heel-former-Jayhawk coach Roy Williams fall to Kansas in a Sweet Sixteen game that is set to take play at Kansas City’s Sprint Center — an arena that would essentially give Kansas a home-court advantage — a Kentucky-Kansas match-up in the Elite Eight could very well be in the cards. The Wildcats topped the Jayhawks by just eight points when the two teams faced off in January, so with a spot in the Final Four at stake, this rematch would likely be a showstopper.

Match-up: Gonzaga (1) vs. Michigan (2)

Ethan Miller—Getty ImagesRui Hachimura #21 of the Gonzaga Bulldogs brings the ball up the court against the Pepperdine Waves during a semifinal game of the West Coast Conference basketball tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 11, 2019.

Round: Elite Eight

As the losers of the 2017 and 2018 National Championships, Gonzaga and Michigan are both itching to make it back to the championship title game for a shot at redemption. But to get there, the two may first have to face each other in an Elite Eight game that would pit the nation’s No. 1-ranked offense (Bulldogs) against the No. 2-ranked defense (Wolverines).

Match-up: Virginia (1) vs. North Carolina (1)

Kenny Williams #24 of the North Carolina Tar Heels takes a three-point shot against the Virginia Cavaliers during their game at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on February 11, 2019 .
Grant Halverson/Getty ImagesKenny Williams #24 of the North Carolina Tar Heels takes a three-point shot against the Virginia Cavaliers during their game at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on February 11, 2019 .

Round: Final Four

The Cavaliers came out on top the first and only time that Virginia and North Carolina met during the regular season, but it’s always a showdown when these two ACC powerhouses go head to head. The Cavaliers thrive at a slower pace while the Tar Heels like to race down the court at breakneck speed, so the outcome of this Final Four match-up would likely depend on who controls the tempo of the game

Match-up: Michigan (2) vs. Michigan State (2)

Ignas Brazdeikis #13 of the Michigan Wolverines dribbles the ball while being guarded by Aaron Henry #11 of the Michigan State Spartans in the second half during the championship game of the Big Ten Basketball Tournament at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois on March 17, 2019.

Round: Final Four

If both Michigan State and Michigan manage to knock out the No. 1 seeds in their regions (Duke and Gonzaga, respectively) — or another team does the job for them first — a Big Ten Tournament Championship rematch could prove to be one of the tournament’s most exciting games. Only this time, the Spartans and Wolverines would be competing for a chance to play in the 2019 National Championship.

Match-up: Duke (1) vs. North Carolina (1)

Round: National Championship

No matter either team’s record or ranking, a Duke-UNC game is high stakes any time the two Tobacco Road teams meet. Over the course of college basketball history, the two schools — both of which are among the top five winningest programs of all-time — have won a combined 38 of the 65 ACC Tournament Championships, 50 regular season ACC championships and 11 National Championships. This year alone, North Carolina swept Duke to win a share of the ACC regular season championship before Duke returned the favor by edging Carolina out of the ACC Tournament with a 74-73 win in the semifinals.

All of this is to say that, for fans of either program, the idea of the Blue Devils and Tar Heels meeting in the NCAA tournament for the very first time with a national title on the line is nearly unfathomable. If these two do go head to head in the 2019 National Championship, the greatest rivalry in college basketball will skyrocket to a whole new level.

Talk show host Wendy Williams is back on her daytime talk show throne after a brief hiatus due to health complications.

The storied entertainment journalist is already back on the hot seat, recently using some “in-group” language in front of her audience OOPS!

As always, Wendy was giving her audience the day’s drama, pouring some hot tea about Blac Chyna and her ex fling YBN Almighty Jay. The teen was allegedly assaulted and wounded during a recent trip to New York City’s iconic Fifth Avenue, the shopping Mecca of the world.

While telling the story, Wendy got so cozy she let the n-word slip.

“I just love Fifth Avenue shopping. It’s unbelievable, you n***as.”

There was an awkward pause from the audience accompanied with some awkward laughter.

“I get very comfortable talking to you,” she said after a beat.

You can watch below:

This hilarious slip up doesn’t take away from all the amazing things Wendy has been up to since her return to TV. She recently launched a drug addition hotline to help those in need.

The hotline, 1-888-5HUNTER (1-888-548-6837), is run through The Hunter Foundation in partnership with T.R.U.S.T,  the national resource hotline dedicated to those suffering from substance abuse. The hotline will be open 24 hours a day.

“We must all come together to respond to this crisis of addiction and substance abuse. Everyone is at risk from the inner cities to more affluent communities,” Williams said in a statement to the press. Williams has remained transparent about her struggle with crack and cocaine usage ten years ago.

“My family and I are very proud to partner with T.R.U.S.T. to get people the help that they so desperately need, especially if they or their families have given up hope. There is hope.”

How to Vet a Potential Solar Installer During a Phone Call

In recent interviews with Modernize, 90 percent of homeowners requested a checklist to help them find and vet contractors. One of the most important steps of that process is your first phone call with a potential contractor, during which you will vet this contractor against the others you’re considering. While finding someone you feel comfortable talking to is significant, it’s not all an abstract exercise. There are some questions you should definitely ask during this phone call to be sure you’ve covered foundational bases before moving forward with a solar contractor.

Use the question guide below and adjust it to your own circumstances to ensure you get everything you need from your solar installer vetting phone call.

How long has the solar installer been in business?

Simply put, the solar contractor’s experience is tantamount to good work. Years of experience could mean local expertise and technical knowledge that will elevate the quality of your installation. Less experience isn’t necessarily bad or telling of a low-quality installation, but it does mean the rates and warranties should be lower, leaving you room to negotiate on pricing.

How much experience does the contractor have with solar panel installation or incentives?

When it comes to solar energy, existing financial incentives could further increase your savings after installing solar panels. Be sure to ask your contractor for an individualized assessment of your solar panel installation. A trustworthy contractor will examine your current utility bill and study the physical properties and opportunities your house presents — like local, regional, or federal financial incentives — to best save you money after installing solar panels for your home.

What is the solar installer’s project estimate — what happens if it changes?

Once you have an estimate of the project’s tentative costs and duration in your hands, you need to understand how it was conceived and what happens if anything in it changes. Be sure to get clarity on these details and don’t be shy to ask for an explanation if you feel you don’t fully understand something.

Agree that any unexpected project expenses will be presented in writing. Surprises, in other words, shouldn’t surprise you or your contractor, and they should definitely not surprise your investment.

Can the solar contractor provide a list of references?

While this solar installation could stay with you (or at least your house) for decades, it will also build, or continue to build, their reputation into a prosperous business. Ask the contractor for testimonials from past clients and don’t feel shy to ask for contact information so you can call those references yourself and get a take on what their experience was like.

Connect with trusted an estimate of the project’s tentative costs in your area with Modernize. This is an important investment you’re making, and the more information you have about the company you’re giving your hard earned money to, the better.

Can the solar installation company provide proof of insurance for personal liability, worker’s compensation, and property damage coverage?

When home improvement projects result in accidents, you want to be sure your family, your house, and all the people involved are safe and taken care of. You want to rest assured that your contractor is fully insured for personal liability, worker’s compensation, and property damage coverage. Even with a clean slate of past accidents, it only takes one to harm your project’s outcome and, more importantly, your personal savings.

Warranties will also impact your quoted cost. Most installers offer manufacturer’s warranties that protect you from faulty equipment. Some might offer additional guarantees for the installation, as well, covering potential damage to your house. Be sure the quoted warranty is clear in what it covers—and in what it doesn’t.

The an estimate of the project’s tentative costs will help you vet a trusted contractor, so you can relax knowing your solar panel project is in good hands. You can access the interactive checklist by visiting the Modernize Resource Center or by an estimate of the project’s tentative costs.

Simply put, the experience is tantamount to good work. And window replacement is no exception. Years of experience could mean local expertise and technical knowledge that will elevate the quality of your installation or upgrade. Less experience isn’t necessarily bad or telling of a low-quality installation, but it does mean the rates and warranties should be lower, leaving you room to negotiate on pricing.

How much experience does the contractor have with windows installation or incentives?

When it comes to the quality and efficiency of windows replacement — which will determine the effect your project has on the increased value of your home — existing financial incentives could further increase your savings after installing windows.

Be sure to ask your contractor for an individualized assessment of your windows installation. A trustworthy contractor will examine your current utility bill and study the physical properties and opportunities your house presents — like local, regional, or federal financial incentives — to best save you money after installing windows for your home.

What is the windows installer’s project estimate — what happens if it changes?

Once you have an estimate of the project’s tentative costs and duration in your hands, you need to understand how it was conceived and what happens if anything in it changes. Be sure to get clarity on these details and don’t be shy to ask for an explanation if you feel you don’t fully understand something.

Agree that any unexpected project expenses will be presented in writing. Surprises, in other words, shouldn’t surprise you or your contractor, and they should definitely not surprise your investment.

Can the windows contractor provide a list of references?

While this windows replacement or installation could stay with you (or at least your house) for decades, it will also build, or continue to build, their reputation into a prosperous business. Ask the contractor for testimonials from past clients and don’t feel shy to ask for contact information so you can call those references yourself and get a take on what their experience was like.

Connect with trusted windows installation contractors in your area with Modernize. This is an important investment you’re making, and the more information you have about the company you’re giving your hard earned money to, the better.

Can the windows installation company provide proof of insurance for personal liability, worker’s compensation, and property damage coverage?

When home improvement projects result in accidents, windows installation contractors You want to rest assured that your contractor is fully insured for personal liability, worker’s compensation, and property damage coverage.

The Modernize Contractor Checklist will help you vet a trusted contractor, so you can relax knowing your windows project is in good hands. You can access the interactive checklist by visiting the Modernize Resource Center or by Modernize Contractor Checklist.

Byredo Toasts Collection During Paris Fashion Week

Ben Gorham brought together Byredo’s trendy community during Paris Fashion Week, from Off-White designer Virgil Abloh to Anja Rubik, Aymeline Valade and influencers Pernille Teisbaek and Caroline Daur.
The occasion was Gorham’s accessories collection for the label, which dabbles in beauty and leather goods.
“I’m based in Sweden, so this is the right occasion to bring everyone together and connect with our community,” said the designer.
But despite his cult following, Gorham is committed to going against the fashion current and taking it slow.
For fall, he presented a small, focused accessories collection where he reworked the brand’s popular Seema bag using embroideries and hand-painted techniques.

His inspiration was the art of bird-watching, which he was drawn to for its peaceful, community-based nature. He loosely translated this into bags in bright colors and hand-painted inkblots, that reflected the “perfect symmetry of birds.”
A black version featuring neon blue inkblots stood out.
“This style has quickly become our iconic bag, maybe because it has a very strong silhouette — without branding or without hard wear, it still became quickly recognizable. So I felt like I should keep exploring different iterations of this bag and use it as a canvas,” said Gorham. “I’m quite slow, but

Ole Miss Basketball Players Kneel During National Anthem To Protest Local Pro-Confederate Rallies

Mississippi v Georgia

Source: Logan Riely / Getty

The Ole Miss basketball team is woke (well, some of them). Players on the squad knelt during the national anthem in protest of pro-Confederate rallies happening near their university’s campus.

Deadspin reports that K.J. Buffen, Terence Davis, Luis Rodriguez, Bruce Stevens, Devontae Shuler and Breein Tyree took a knee before the team’s home game against Georgia on Saturday (Feb. 24). A total of eight players kneeled per reports.

Reports ESPN:

Minutes before the game, both teams formed lines for the anthem. As “The Star-Spangled Banner” began, six Rebels players — who appeared to be KJ Buffen, D.C. Davis, Brian Halums, Luis Rodriguez, Devontae Shuler and Bruce Stevens — knelt one by one. Two more players — appearing to be Breein Tyree and Franco Miller Jr. — took a knee on the song’s final line.

The game was being played while two pro-Confederacy groups organized a march onto the campus in Oxford, Mississippi.

“The majority of it was we saw one of our teammates doing it and we just didn’t want him to be alone,” Ole Miss scoring leader Tyree said after his team’s 72-71 victory. “We’re just tired of these hate groups coming to our school and portraying our campus like it’s our actual university having these hate groups in our school.”

So no, they weren’t disrespecting the flag or servicemen. Star player Tyree later tweeted: “To the people that fight for this country, my teammates and I meant no disrespect to everything that you do for us, but we had to take a stand to the negative things that went on today on our campus. #WeNeedChange”

The team’s coach, Kermit Davis, was unaware the protest was going to happen, but he supported his players, as he should.

Respect.

What to Expect During Your Siding Installation

You have selected a reliable siding contractor and budgeted for the cost of your siding replacement. It is now time to prepare for your siding installation. Like any home renovation project, the siding installation process will vary depending on your home’s unique attributes. Understanding the siding replacement process, while working in tandem with a seasoned contractor, will help you manage project expectations and ensure a smooth home improvement experience.

The Timeline of a Siding Installation

While the size of your home plays an important role in any home improvement project, it is a paramount factor in your siding project. The size of your home, number of stories, and terrain will impact your installation timeline. Your contractor should address all of these variables with you ahead of your final quote.

Homeowners should expect their siding installation to take approximately 10 to 14 days. If your siding requires painting, this will add a few additional days to the project timeline. This lengthy time frame includes the removal of your existing siding, prep, adding insulation, the installation of the new siding, and any final touches— like trim work.

How to Prepare Your Home for Your Siding Installation

Like any home renovation, there are ways you can prepare your home for installation day:

  • Trim, or tie back, trees and shrubbery near your home. Cut your grass short before your siding installation begins. Shorter grass will make it easier for your contractors to use a magnetic nail finder to recover any nails or staples that go astray during your siding replacement.
  • Clear all items away from your home’s exterior, including potted plants, patio furniture, and gardening equipment.
  • During your siding removal and installation, the interior walls of your home may shake. Remove pictures, shelves, and valuables that may risk falling.
  • A dumpster will be delivered to collect old siding and debris. Keep your driveway clear to allow workers easier access to your home.
  • Park your vehicles further away from your home to minimize the chance of them being damaged by loose debris.
  • For safety, keep all children and pets away from the work area.

Ahead of the installation, it’s also important to discuss shutters, downspouts, and caulking with your contractor. Ask if you should remove these fixtures in advance of the project, or if workers will prep the areas around your windows and doors.

Siding Installation Steps and Procedures

Old Siding Removal

Before your new siding can be installed, your existing siding needs to be removed. While this occurs, your contractor and team will assess the wall beneath— looking for signs of water damage or rot.

Wall Preparation

Your siding’s appearance and stability depend on the integrity of the wall beneath it. Your contractor will repair and assess your wall so your siding can be installed correctly.

Insulation Installation

After the old siding has been removed, your contractor will make sure your home is properly insulated.

New Siding Installation

Lastly, your new siding will be installed. If your siding requires paint, this will take a few days to apply after all of your siding has been installed.

Factors That May Impact Your Siding Installation

No matter how well prepared you and your contractor are for your siding installation, unforeseeable problems may be uncovered or delays may occur. These snags can add additional costs or extend your project’s timeline. Some common unexpected siding obstacles include:

Water damage, rot, and evidence of asbestos

While your contractor will thoroughly inspect your home’s exterior during your initial consultation, it can be challenging to identify lurking problems before removing the existing siding. Asbestos —a heat-resistant, toxic material— can be especially difficult to identify in siding. Once the siding is removed, your installers may discover water damage or area in need of immediate repair. There may be additional costs for removal and remedies.

Sheathing repair

If the sheathing behind your old siding is damaged or unusable for any reason, it will need to be replaced wherever its integrity has been compromised. Sheathing is inexpensive but will require additional labor.

If you feel unsure about unforeseen challenges, ask your contractor to show you the damage as well as a section in good condition, so you can compare.

A siding project is a large home improvement project, but one that results in lower heating and cooling costs, and increased home value. Begin your siding project today with Modernize.

Cord cutting vs cable

Dish Network announced today that it shed 334,000 subscribers during the fourth quarter, with a substantial portion of the departures being attributed to the ongoing dispute with HBO that’s caused HBO programming to be blacked out for Dish subscribers.

If that wasn’t enough, Dish president and CEO Erik Carlson added that there’s been essentially no progress in talks with HBO over the blackout — the first in Dish’s almost 50-year history, which likely spooked many subscribers to go ahead and cancel especially with April’s season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones getting closer and closer.

Tameka Foster Talks Almost Dying During Plastic Surgery: “I Was Married, Publicly Shamed And Didn’t Ever Feel Like I Was Enough”

Lupus LA's Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon

Source: Tiffany Rose / Getty

Ten years ago, Tameka Foster, then known as Tameka Raymond and married to Usher, one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, almost died while trying to get plastic surgery.

Looking back on that experience this week, Foster expressed her gratitude for life, but also addressed the public criticism that she says pushed her to get the surgery in the first place.

“Feeling grateful today,” she wrote on Wednesday. “10 years ago today I suffered a cardiac arrest in Brazil. #Flatlined #IDied. I was married, publicly shamed and didn’t ever feel like I was enough, pretty enough, exotic enough, slim enough, light enough, worthy enough. Funny part… Today I’m 20 pounds heavier, feel much prettier, single AF, happier, and so amazingly worthy.”

Instagram Photo

As the story goes, two months after welcoming their second child together, Naviyd Ely Raymond, Foster decided to fly to Brazil to get liposuction done on her stomach. She knew that being the wife of a public figure, she wouldn’t be able to escape unwanted commentary about her body after baby. She hadn’t been able to escape it before she had Naviyd and Usher Raymond V, as people openly questioned the fact that Usher had chosen to be with her and marry her in 2007. The singer felt the need to publicly defend her honor in 2008 on MTV’s TRL, saying, “I hear y’all talking crazy out there, she’s a beautiful black woman. Stop. Stop talking. And I love her. Stop it.”

But that wouldn’t be enough.

Before Foster could even undergo the procedure, she went into cardiac arrest while under anesthesia. Ellen Dasptry, a rep for the surgeon who was supposed to have performed the surgery in Brazil, said Foster was revived and placed into a medically-induced coma immediately.

“When an attack like this happens, the doctors put the patient to sleep… and make sure that everything is okay and that there has not been any damage,” Dasptry told PEOPLE in 2009. “This is the protocol every time and this is what was done.”

Foster survived the very scary situation, and was in much better condition a week later. However, her marriage fell apart soon after. Just months after her health ordeal, Usher filed for divorce.

What To Expect During Your HVAC Installation

Knowing when to replace your home’s heating and cooling system is a challenging endeavor. It is a difficult decision to stop repairing an older, less-efficient unit, and invest in a new HVAC system. If you are facing an HVAC replacement, this article will guide you through selecting an HVAC contractor to tips that will help you prepare your home before the HVAC replacement project begins.

Estimate Your HVAC Replacement Costs

Before this home improvement project, Modernize recommends that you get up to four HVAC replacement cost estimates from reputable HVAC contractors or companies. The average cost for installation of a new replacement air conditioner ranges from $ 3,500 to $ 7,525. However, your estimate will also vary based on your home’s square footage.

Upon arriving at your property, the HVAC contractor will measure the square footage of your home. This will help determine the size unit needed to efficiently heat and cool your home. The recommendation may include upgrading attic or crawl space insulation, resealing of windows and doors, or repairing breaches in exterior walls where conditioned air might escape.

Know the Terms

Heating and cooling systems have varying performance ratings and factors. As you discuss units with your contractor, be aware of the following terms:

  • Heating Season Performance Factor or HSPF: This rating determines the efficiency of a heat pump. Heat pumps with a rating of at least 8.2 are awarded the Energy Star label by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE: The percentage of the energy used that is converted into usable heat. The higher the percentage, the more energy efficient.
  • Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER: This rating notes the efficiency of the cooling system. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system. The minimum standard SEER is 13 for air conditioners. Most modern air conditioners have a SEER that ranges from 13 to 21.
  • Energy Efficiency Ratio or EER: This rating bases its energy efficiency rating on how the unit would react to an outside temperature of 95 degrees, an inside temperature of 80 degrees and humidity of 50 percent.

Units with a higher HSPF and SEER rating than the current standard will cost more, but often yield a better return on investment over time.

How to Find a Reliable HVAC Contractor

To best improve the comfort of your home, you will want to find a contractor you can trust— a local professional who can get the job done quickly. At Modernize, we frequently speak to homeowners about their home improvement projects. When searching for local contractors, the majority of homeowners ask trusted friends, family, or neighbors for referrals. Homeowners can also contact their local Better Business Bureau. Modernize is also available to help you connect with trusted HVAC contractors in your area.

Vetting your contractors will ensure you find the best, reliable installer for your project. To help homeowners easily vet and find a trusted HVAC contractor, Modernize recently created a free contractor checklist. You can access the interactive checklist by visiting the Modernize Homeowner Portal or by downloading it here.

The Average Length of an HVAC Installation

The average HVAC installation can take anywhere from eight to 14 hours. Before your project, discuss the installation timeline with your contractor— as they know best based on your home and new unit.

Prepare Your Home for Your HVAC Replacement

There are several tasks you can do before the installation crew arrives that can speed up the process of your HVAC installation.

  • So the contractor has easy access to the site, clear the area where your HVAC system will be installed. This may include moving branches, large sticks, garden hoses, and patio decor.
  • For the safety of the contractor and your pets, make sure animals are caged and away from the installation team.
  • Make extra space in your yard and driveway for the installation team. You may relocate your vehicles, so construction crews can park as close to your home as possible.
  • Modernize recommends moving valuables such as antiques and irreplaceable objects to a safe location.

Typically, upon arriving at your property, the HVAC contractor and crew — usually one or two assistants — will assess the job site and begin preparing the work areas. First, the crew will protect all flooring in applicable work areas by laying drop cloths and/or protective paper. Next, they should move furniture and other household belongings near the work areas to a safe location and out of the way. Because there may be some dust created during the installation, heavy furniture and other household items that cannot be moved should be covered with plastic for protection. After ensuring all flooring and household items are protected, the crew will bring in their tools and begin the project.

Removing the Old HVAC System

Before installing your new HVAC system, the crew must first remove the old equipment. This may involve gaining access to attic areas, crawl spaces, and basements that typically house the HVAC system. After cutting the power to the HVAC unit, the crew will remove any refrigerant from the AC system and begin disassembling and removing the old equipment.

Duct Repair and/or Modification

Depending on the scope of your project, duct repair and/or replacement may be involved. One or two crew members will typically begin this work, while the lead installer begins assembling the new equipment. If major ductwork is involved with your HVAC project, you can expect to have crew members negotiating their way through attics and crawl spaces to make the repairs or modifications necessary for the new equipment. Ahead of your project, discuss ductwork modification with your HVAC contractor.

Installing Your New HVAC Unit

After repairing or modifying the existing ductwork, the crew will begin installing the new equipment to manufacturer’s specifications. Depending on the type of system you choose, the equipment may be installed both inside and outside your home. The components installed may include the inside air handler or evaporator, outside compressor or condensing unit, new refrigerant supply lines, thermostat, condensate drain lines, and the condensate pump when applicable. In addition, while most HVAC contractors can upgrade wiring and circuit breakers during a typical HVAC installation. Major changes to the property’s electrical system and circuitry may require the services of a licensed electrical contractor.

 Plan for Possible Unforeseen Circumstances

As with many home improvement projects, unexpected repairs can pop up that are necessary to complete the project. These might include replacing damaged ductwork, rotten wall studs, electrical upgrades, and drywall repairs that are not originally included in your estimate. While most HVAC contractors will try to cover all the bases in the initial estimate, there are things that cannot be assessed until the project has started. Before completing any additional work, your contractor should discuss project details with you and the updated cost.

Testing the New HVAC System

When the replacement HVAC installation is complete, pressure and vacuum tests are performed before charging the system with new refrigerant. After a complete inspection of the new HVAC system, refrigerant is added and the system is activated and retested to ensure all components are working properly.

After all testing is complete, your HVAC contractor should go over proper operation of the new system. This includes discussing how to replace the furnace filter and how to operate the thermostat. This is also a great time to ask your contractor who should fill out and submit warranty and rebate forms.

An HVAC replacement is a large home improvement project, but one that results in a more comfortable, energy efficient home. Learn more about starting your HVAC replacement project today.

What To Expect During Your Roof Installation

Once you have chosen a trusted roofing contractor and budgeted for the cost of a roof replacement. It’s now time for the roof installation to begin. What should you expect? Here’s a guide on what a roof installation will entail and how you can prepare.

The Roof Installation Process, Step By Step

In general, home solar panel installation and activation follows this process:

Inspection and Planning

  • Timeframe: 1-3 Weeks
  • To determine the scope of your roof installation, your roofing contractor will do an inspection of your current roof. After an inspection, your contractor will be able to provide a quote and scope of work.

Permitting

  • Timeframe: 2-4 Weeks
  • Depending on where you live, your contractor will need to secure permits to complete a roof installation. Your contractor will manage the permitting process, but this will impact your project’s time frame.

Installation

  • Timeframe: 1-7 Days
  • After receiving approval, your roofing contractor can begin work. This includes ordering your materials and finalizing planning. Depending on the size of your roof, installation can take up to a week. Read our guide to roof installation for more on what a roofing project may include.

Disposal

  • Timeframe: 1 Day
  • Your roof replacement will likely entail the disposal of your current shingles. The installation will also create debris, like packaging and old fasteners. Your contractor should handle ordering dumpsters and scheduling haul away for all items.

Factors That Impact Roof Installation

No matter how well prepared you and your contractor are for roof installation, construction may uncover unforeseeable problems or delays. These can add additional costs or extend your project’s timeline. Some common unexpected roof installation obstacles include:

Bringing Your Roof Up To Code

  • Your roof may have originally been built to meet decades-old building codes that will no longer apply to new construction. Making necessary repairs may add to the length of your roof installation.

Pests and Mold

  • Especially in humid areas of the country, mold and termite damage may be found during a roof replacement. Whether it’s insects or decay, these problems will need to be addressed before new shingles can be installed.

Poor Roof Design Causing Water Traps

  • Water traps are a common issue that homeowners are often unaware of until a roof replacement takes place. Water traps are areas that are prone to leaks due to runoff areas that direct too much water to one place. Water traps also lead to faster wear on your shingles and other materials like siding or brick. If your contractor uncovers this issue, you can expect to add time to mitigate the problem.

How to Prepare Your Home For Installation Day

Like any home renovation, there are ways you can prepare your home for installation day. Tips include:

  • Cut your grass short before roof installation begins. Shorter grass will make it easier for your roofers to use a magnetic nail finder to recover any nails or staples that go astray during a roof replacement.
  • Cover items in your attic with a tarp or plastic sheeting. Small gaps in your decking can allow shingles, nails and other debris to fall onto your insulation or valuables stored in your attic.
  • Move plants and lawn furniture far away from your home. This also applies to vehicles parked in your driveway. Relocating valuable items will minimize the chance of them being damaged while your roofing team hauls debris over the side of your roof.

Now that you know what goes into the roof installation process, check out our guide to evaluating quotes from a roofing contractor. You can also use Modernize to find experienced, local roofing contractors that can help you install a beautiful, new roof.

CBS Blocked a Medical Marijuana Commercial From Playing During the Super Bowl

(Bloomberg) — The Super Bowl isn’t ready for medical marijuana.

Acreage Holdings, the multi-state cannabis company backed by John Boehner, says CBS rejected a television advertisement that calls for the legalization of medical marijuana. The network, which is airing the game on Feb. 3, nixed the proposed spot after seeing a rough outline, according to the company.

While medical marijuana is now legal in more than 30 states, the federal prohibition on cannabis has restricted research and made it difficult for some potential patients to get their hands on a drug that proponents say helps treat seizures, pain and other ailments.

The advertisement aimed to “create an advocacy campaign for constituents who are being lost in the dialogue,” Acreage President George Allen said. Super Bowl airtime would have been the best way to achieve this, he added.

“It’s hard to compete with the amount of attention something gets when it airs during the Super Bowl,” Allen said in a telephone interview.

CBS didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment on Monday, which was a federal holiday.

The Super Bowl is typically the most-watched television program of the year, and it’s an opportunity for brands to get in front of millions of Americans. Companies typically debut new publicity campaigns and air their most creative commercials during the event. Some viewers eagerly anticipate the advertisements that run during stoppages in play.

In past years, some advertisers have also grabbed the spotlight for offering up commercials that weren’t likely to be approved.

Injuries, Seizures

Acreage, one of the most valuable U.S. weed companies with a market value of more than $ 2.4 billion, had hoped to raise its profile and push for increased access to medical marijuana. The proposed ad features two subjects who have benefited from medicinal cannabis: a veteran with combat injuries and a child with seizures.

Super Bowl ads are expensive, reportedly costing more than $ 5 million for an average 30-second spot last year. Acreage, which went public in Canada last year, was prepared to pony up, and created the ad thinking it had a legitimate chance of getting onto the air. The company said it was careful to position the spot as a “call to political action” rather than a pitch for its brand, which now has cannabis operations in roughly 15 states.

“We certainly thought there was a chance,” Allen said. “You strike when the chance of your strike has the probability of success — this isn’t a doomed mission.”

Avoid Hidden Costs During a Roof Replacement

From curb appeal to increased energy efficiency, a roof replacement is a smart way to drastically increase the value of your home. However, roof repairs can also be some of the most expensive renovations for homeowners. So how do you ensure that your roof replacement stays in budget, and avoid hidden costs that could break the bank? Knowledge is key. Read on for Modernize’s advice to help you prepare for unexpected costs during your roofing project.

Basic Costs of a Roof Replacement

Begin by determining your baseline roof replacement budget. The average roof replacement cost is between $ 8,000 – $ 17,500 including installation, the cost of roofing shingles, removal of your old roof, disposal fees, permitting and labor.

Whether you are budgeting for a DIY replacement or accepting bids from roofing contractors, the cost of your project will be impacted by basic roofing considerations like:

Roof Dimensions

In short, the simpler the roof, the cheaper the replacement. The complexity, slope, and size of your roof will have a significant impact on the cost of your roof replacement.

Roofs (and roof repairs) are measured in squares, which are 10×10 foot areas. The more squares to be replaced, the higher the cost. Roofs with more slant have a larger surface area than roofs with less slant. And a roof with more level changes, hips, valleys and add-ons like dormers will be more expensive than a simple roof.

Roofing Materials

Roofing material prices range from very affordable options like asphalt ($ 150 to $ 550 per square) to options like slate (close to $ 385 to $ 800 per square). As such, the cost of raw materials will drive the price of the entire roofing project up or down.

In addition to shingles, building materials are another cost to consider. This includes, but is not limited to, boards and plywood, nails, drop cloths, calk, roof underlayment, flashing, and sheathing.

Labor

Labor costs will vary depending on the size of the crew, their experience, and the scope of your roofing project. However, Modernize encourages homeowners to not select a contractor based on price alone. The quality of work is especially important when it comes to roofing projects.

While some aspects of a roof replacement can be DIY, the smartest choice for such an important project is to partner with a reputable roofing contractor. The right roofing contractor will be able to help you set (and stick) to your roof replacement budget and have the experience to foresee any hidden costs.

Disposal

While it is often possible to install new roofing over existing shingles, that can impact the quality of your roof and interfere with your roofing warranty. As such, your roof replacement will likely entail the disposal of your current roof. Shingles must be disposed of properly, so budget for a dumpster and additional disposal costs.

Inspection and Permitting

To determine the scope of your roof replacement, your roofing contractor will do an inspection of your current roof. Inspections are generally not free, but a roofing contractor may include the cost of their inspection in the price of a repair project after being hired. After an inspection, your contractor will be able to provide a more accurate quote and scope of work.

Depending on where you live, your contractor may also need to secure permits to complete a roof replacement. Your contractor will manage the permitting process, but be prepared for the cost. Depending on your region, a roof replacement permit may be a flat rate, or it could vary based on your home’s size or value.

The Most Common Hidden Roof Replacement Costs

No matter how well prepared and researched your roof replacement budget may be, keep in mind that construction may uncover additional costs that are beyond you or your contractor’s control. Especially if you live in an older house, it’s wise to be prepared. With that in mind, some common unexpected costs to be prepared for include:

Bringing Your Roof Up To Code

Your roof may have originally been built to meet decades-old building codes that will no longer apply to new construction. While this is great news for your home’s energy efficiency and sustainability, it is an added expense to keep in mind.

Pests and Mold

Especially in humid areas of the country, mold and termite damage can add hidden costs to your roof replacement. Whether it’s insects or decay, these problems will need to be addressed before new shingles can be installed.

Leaks And Rotten Plywood

Leaks in your roof can sometimes go unnoticed until the shingles are removed during a roofing repair. These leaks can cause damage to your home, like rot in rafters and other wood structures. If there is already extensive damage, the material and labor cost to replace that wood can quickly increase the roof replacement price by hundreds of dollars.

Poor Roof Design Causing Water Traps

Water traps are a common issue that homeowners are often unaware of until a roof replacement takes place. Water traps are areas that are prone to leaks due to runoff areas that direct too much water to one place. Water traps also lead to faster wear on your shingles and other materials like siding or brick. If your contractor uncovers this issue, you can expect to include the costs to mitigate the water traps in your roof replacement budget.

Upgrades

For many homeowners, a roof replacement is a smart choice to increase the value of their home. In that vein, you may find that upgrades to other elements of your roof are also in order during the roof replacement. Examples include upgrading to low-maintenance gutters, improving your roofing ventilation, or opting for a more durable type of roof underlayment. Discuss how these and other options can be worked into your roofing repair with your contractor. They can help you decide what makes sense to maximize the value of your home while staying within budget.

Tips To Keep Your Roof Replacement On Budget

Like any home renovation, there are ways you can prepare your home to minimize additional costs that can occur during the actual installation.

  • Where possible, move plants and lawn furniture far away from your home. This also applies to vehicles parked in your driveway. Relocating valuable items will minimize the chance of them being damaged while your roofing team hauls loads of debris over the side of your roof.

Now that you have the knowledge of the costs, both planned and unplanned, to expect during your roof replacement, all that’s left is to ensure you stick to your budget. To do that, you can:

  • Complete your roof replacement in the off-season. Demand for roof repairs is greatest in spring and summer, so the cost will typically be higher than when done in the cooler months when laborers’ time is in less demand. The price of new shingles can also be lower during the off-season.
  • Leave 15-20 percent of wiggle room in your budget. This will allow you to take any hidden issues in stride without impacting the rest of your roof replacement. This may seem like a large buffer, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
  • Establish great communication with your contractor. Let them know about your budget constraints up front. This will help them determine the most realistic way to reach your desired end result, and help them as they purchase supplies for the project.

All in all, having a reliable and honest roofing contractor is perhaps the easiest way to avoid hidden costs during a roof replacement. Take advantage of Modernize’s tools to find a trusted local contractor that can make the roof of your dreams a reality.

TSA No-Shows Increase During Shutdown

ATLANTA (AP) — The number of airport security screeners failing to show up for work around the country is soaring as the partial government shutdown goes into its fourth week.

No-shows among screeners jumped Sunday and again Monday, when the Transportation Security Administration reported a national absence rate of 7.6 percent compared with 3.2 percent on a comparable day a year ago. Monday marked the first business day after screeners did not receive a paycheck for the first time since the shutdown began.

At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest, some passengers waited more than an hour to get through checkpoints. The airport reported the long lines on its website Monday morning, showing the hour-plus waits at all three checkpoints in the domestic terminal.

“It’s chaos out here,” passenger Vincent Smith said as he stood in a line that snaked through the Atlanta airport’s atrium and baggage claim areas. “This line, I’ve been here about 15 minutes and it has moved 2 feet.”

TSA is working with the Atlanta airport and airlines “to maximize all available operational resources at the airport,” TSA spokesman Jim Gregory said.

The agency is working with airports and airlines nationwide to consolidate operations and get the most out of resources, Gregory added. He declined to provide absentee figures for Atlanta or other airports, saying that would compromise security by exposing possible vulnerabilities.

“Screeners will not do anything to compromise or change their security procedures,” he said.

But Smith said he could relate to government workers who don’t show up so they can find other ways to make ends meet.

“If I was a government worker, yes, I would probably call in and try to do something else because creditors don’t care if you’re furloughed or not,” Smith said. “They just want to get paid and with a family of six, you have to do what you have to.”

Atlanta’s wait times stretched well beyond what the TSA says most passengers have encountered since the shutdown began.

Delta Air Lines, the dominant carrier in Atlanta, and other airlines said they were advising passengers to get to the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international trips. A Delta spokeswoman said airline employees were pitching in by helping manage TSA lines.

TSA said that it screened 1.97 million people on Sunday and that 99.1 percent waited less than 30 minutes, and 93.1 percent less than 15 minutes. Precheck lines for people who pay a fee for expedited screening averaged less than five minutes, TSA said.

A combination of a busy Monday travel day combined with some security lines being closed led to the long lines, airport spokesman Andrew Gobeil said. He said he didn’t know how many security lines were down.

A statement from TSA attributed the long waits in Atlanta to “anticipated high volume.”

Meanwhile, TSA said it would move officers around the country to deal with local shortages. A few airports are making changes to deal with the shortage of screeners.

At Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, a security checkpoint and ticket counter that were shuttered Sunday afternoon in Terminal B will remain closed through Tuesday, a spokesman said.

The terminal handles United Express flights. Passengers must go through checkpoints in other terminals, then walk or take a train to planes parked at Terminal B. A spokesman for United Airlines said flights were not affected.

Miami International Airport closed one of its concourses for part of Saturday and Sunday, shifting about a dozen afternoon and evening flights each day to other concourses so that TSA workers could adequately staff the other checkpoints. Airport spokesman Greg Chin said TSA was staffing the Concourse G checkpoint on Monday, but airport officials were monitoring the situation and would make more adjustments if necessary.

An official with the union representing TSA workers said TSA canceled employees’ vacation requests about a week ago.

“Since nobody is getting paid, (TSA officials) don’t want them to take annual leave,” said Cairo D’Almeida, president of a government workers’ union local in Seattle. He said he was asking local food banks if they can help the workers.

Gregory, the TSA spokesman said that was not a TSA decision. Under guidelines from the federal Office of Personnel Management, paid time off is canceled for employees, including the airport screeners, who are exempt from certain federal labor laws.

In Atlanta, Monday’s long wait times come with less than three weeks remaining before the city hosts one of the world’s biggest sporting events. Super Bowl 53 on Feb. 3 is expected to bring hordes of travelers to Atlanta for the game and days of concerts and related events.

“We’re confident that we will be as efficient and as welcoming as people expect the city of Atlanta to be here at Hartsfield-Jackson for the Super Bowl,” Gobeil said.

What To Expect During Your Solar Panel Installation

You have done extensive research, decided that solar paneling is a good choice for your home and are looking to hire a great solar contractor. Congratulations! You are now ready to begin the process of solar panel installation. Like any home renovation, the solar panel installation process will vary depending on your home’s unique attributes, so working in tandem with a seasoned contractor will ensure smooth sailing. Read on for advice on what to expect during the entire solar installation, and how to prepare for the installation process.

The Solar Panel Installation Process, Step By Step

In general, home solar panel installation and activation follows this process:

Site Assessment and Design

  • Timeframe: 1-4 Weeks
  • This step begins with an initial site inspection, where your contractor will visit your home to get a better understanding of your needs. Your contractor will then design your solar panel system based on your home’s unique attributes. If necessary, most contractors can also work with you to address any issues that might hinder panel installation, like pruning nearby trees or making roofing repairs.

Permitting

  • Timeframe: 2-8 Weeks
  • Your solar panel designs must now be submitted to your local government for permitting. The process for approval varies from region to region, but never fear: Your contractor should work closely with you during permitting, and will likely be very knowledgeable about your area’s permitting process.

The Solar Panel Installation

  • Timeframe: 1-7 days
  • After receiving approval, your solar contractor can begin work. This includes ordering your solar panels, as well as making sure your roof is structurally sound and free of obstructions. On the big day, an installation crew will install the proper wiring and mounting equipment and then place and connect the solar panels themselves. Depending on the size of the solar panel system being installed, this process can be done within a day.

Government Inspection

  • Timeframe: 2-3 Weeks
  • A final inspection by your local government and/or municipal utility must occur before your new solar array can officially be turned on. An inspector will visit your home to ensure that your solar panel system is properly installed. They may also install a net meter, which tracks production and allows your home to send excess power back to the electrical grid.

Activation

  • Once you receive final approval, you can immediately flip the switch and begin harvesting solar energy for your home.

Factors That Impact Solar Panel Installation

There are several factors of your home’s design to take into account before beginning installation. Solar panels work best on large, rectangular, south-facing sections of roof. Also, mitigate shade cast by trees or nearby buildings, as that can reduce your solar panels’ efficiency.

Last, the type and age of your roofing material is an important consideration. Solar panels can be installed on almost any roofing, but the material itself will determine the mounting system that works best for your home. The material should be sturdy and rot-free. If a roof replacement is necessary, that job can often be completed in tandem with the solar panel installation.

Don’t be daunted by these considerations. A good solar contractor will understand your home’s unique properties and find the right number, size, and style of solar panels for you. Modernize is an excellent place to start your search for a trusted, local solar contractor to partner with for your solar panel installation.

How to Prepare Your Home For Installation Day

You might be wondering how you can physically prepare your home and family for installation day. The good news is that solar panel installation itself is a fairly convenient, hands-off home renovation that requires very little preparation on your part. Small thing to keep in mind include:

  • Work with your contractor to make sure your roof is free of obstructions before installation day. This might include pruning tree limbs or relocating your satellite dish.
  • Solar panel installation can be noisy, so consider how the sounds of hammering will impact your daily routine. For example, small children or pets might be more comfortable staying with family during installation.
  • Make extra space in your yard and driveway for the installation team. Remove decorations and outdoor furniture from the vicinity to allow room for scaffolding. You should also relocate your vehicles, so construction crews can park as close to your home as possible.

Solar panel installation can be a long journey, but it’s one that ends with a significant increase in home value. If you’re interested in reaping the financial and environmental benefits of a solar-powered home, our tools can help you get started.

Top places where the British Royal family travels during winter

When most people hear about the royal family, all they think about is wealth and extravagance. Most of us think that because of their position, they only spend their time in the most luxurious and expensive cities during winter. However, this is not the case.

The British royal family often spends their time in some of the simplest but coolest regions of the world. They have been known to travel as far as Africa just to enjoy themselves. Here are the top locations where the British royal family loves to travel in winter.

1. Scotland

For many years now, Scotland has been the choice destination for Queen Elizabeth during winter. Her Royal Highness and Prince Philip usually spend their time in the private Balmoral Castle. Here, all other family members usually visit and enjoy themselves. The region is ideal for many sports that are loved by the royal family, including fishing, hunting, and taking walks on the beach. The climate in Scotland is very favorable, so the family can stay a bit warmer there during winter.

2. Norfolk

Norfolk, England is an eastern county, and is a traditional vacation spot for the royal family during winter. Here, they stay at Sandringham House where there are expensive gardens, woodland estates, wetlands, a country park, and tidal mudflats to enjoy. This is the perfect outdoor destination just for the Royal family to enjoy. William and Kate own a house in Sandringham Estate, too. They love to spend their time here with their loved ones.

3. Corfu Island, Greece

When it comes to picking a vacation destination, the royal family usually considers the sand, sea, and sun. The royal family usually selects Corfu Island as an ideal place for a relaxing vacation during the winter, where they often stay at Rothschild Villa. Corfu is famously known for its wonderful scenery and secluded beaches. Corfu’s center has been named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, because of its historic buildings including palaces, churches, and forts.

4. Kenya

Another location that is loved by the British royal family is a country located in East Africa next to the Indian Ocean – Kenya. Her Royal Highness spent time at Treetops Safari Lodge in 1952, where she received the news of her father’s death and that she was now a Queen. In 1983, she made another trip back to Kenya, this time with Prince Philip. Kenya was also the location where Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton while the couple was staying at Lake Rutundu back in 2010. The climate in Kenya makes the country an ideal place for vacations during winter.

5. Botswana

This is another favorite destination for the royal family. Its warm temperatures, as well as sunny days all year round, make it an ideal place for a vacation. Prince Harry spent a gap year helping out in Botswana, where he set up a charity for children who were in need of medical care and assistance. He also took a trip there with Meghan Markle, which helped the couple to cement their relationship.

Healthy Living During The Holidays

Dr. Susan Reinhard, a registered nurse, senior vice president and director of AARP public policy institute, joins us this morning on behalf of AARP to discuss healthy living during the holiday season and beyond.

She is a nationally recognized expert in health and long-term care, with extensive experience in conducting, directing and translating research to promote policy change.

Q&A

WHAT IS AARP’S APPROACH ON HEALTH?

AARP’S HEALTHY LIVING INITIATIVE, WHICH I AM EXCITED TO BE LEADING, IS TO EMPOWER PEOPLE 50-PLUS TO LIVE THEIR HEALTHIEST LIVES POSSIBLE.

AARP WANTS TO HELP YOU TAKE A WHOLE-BODY APPROACH TO YOUR HEALTHY LIVING GOALS AND HELP YOU TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH AS YOU AGE.

A WHOLE-BODY APPROACH TO HEALTHY LIVING MEANS IMPROVING HOW YOU EAT, SLEEP, EXERCISE, AND CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT EVERY STAGE OF AGING.

ON AARP.ORG/HEALTH YOU MAY FIND TOOLS, RESOURCES, AND INFORMATION RANGING FROM EXERCISE TO BRAIN GAMES, FROM COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS TO CONNECTING WITH YOUR COMMUNITY, FROM BETTER NUTRITION TO BETTER SLEEP.

HEALTHY LIVING IS AS MUCH ABOUT MAKING SMALL CHANGES TO YOUR EVERYDAY ROUTINE, AS IT IS ABOUT BIG LIFE-CHANGING BEHAVIORAL COMMITMENTS.

WHAT’S A SMALL CHANGE THAT PEOPLE CAN CONSIDER?

WALK 30 MINUTES A DAY.

AS PART OF OUR HEALTHY LIVING WORK, THIS PAST SPRING WE LAUNCHED A FIT AND FUN CHALLENGE TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND FITNESS. THE CHALLENGE INSPIRED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TO WALK 30 MINUTES A DAY FOR EIGHT WEEKS THROUGH AN INTERACTIVE WEBSITE THAT ALLOWED PEOPLE TO MAKE THAT COMMITMENT, CONNECT AND SHARE STORIES, AND GAIN INSPIRATION AND TIPS FROM A LEADING FITNESS EXPERT. THE CHALLENGE ENDED FOR THIS YEAR BUT WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO START OR CONTINUE YOUR 30 MINUTE WALKS.

FOR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS, EXERCISE CAN BE A POPULAR ONE. HOW CAN WE KEEP UP THE MOTIVATION TO EXERCISE?

SOME TIPS ARE STOP MAKING EXERCISE ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK, WRITE DOWN EXACTLY WHEN AND WHERE YOU WILL EXERCISE, OR HAVE A PLAN B.

ALSO, PRIORITIZE CONVENIENCE. DAVID MAXFIELD, CO-AUTHOR OF CHANGE ANYTHING, SAYS “SET YOUR WORKOUT CLOTHES NEXT TO YOUR BED THE NIGHT BEFORE, AND KEEP EXERCISE EQUIPMENT VISIBLE AND NEARBY.

YOU CAN EVEN MAKE IT SOCIAL. YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO EXERCISE CONSISTENTLY IF YOU WORK OUT WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

FOR MORE TIPS ABOUT EXERCISING AND EXERCISES, GO TO AARP.ORG/HEALTH.

DURING THE HOLIDAYS PEOPLE TEND TO EAT MORE, WHAT CAN WE DO TO STAY HEALTHY DURING THE HOLIDAYS?

EAT BEFOREHAND. FASTING BEFORE A HOLIDAY DINNER CAN BACKFIRE. CYNTHIA SASS, A NUTRITIONIST AND AUTHOR OF SLIM DOWN NOW SAYS, “EAT REGULAR, OR SMALLER, MEALS BEFORE ANY FEAST.”

SHE ALSO RECOMMENDS AT ANY BUFFET TABLE, LOOK AT ALL THE OPTIONS BEFORE PUTTING THINGS ON YOUR PLATE. CHOOSE ONE OR TWO SPLURGE FOODS AND TRY TO BALANCE WITH OTHER LIGHT, HEALTHY CHOICES LIKE CUT VEGGIES.

ANOTHER TIP CYNTHIA PROVIDES IS TO PHYSICALLY DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM THE BUFFET.

WHAT ARE SOME ACTIVITIES WE CAN DO FOR EATING HEALTHY DURING AND BEYOND THE HOLIDAYS?

IF YOU WANT A HEALTHY HEART AND A NUMBER YOU ARE HAPPY WITH ON THE SCALE, EAT BRAZIL NUTS, PUT DOWN YOUR FORK AT 6 PM AND WEIGH YOURSELF EVERY DAY.

THESE ARE FINDINGS FROM STUDIES AT THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL MEETING FOR ADVANCES IN CARDIO VASCULAR SCIENCE.

OTHER ACTIVITIES CAN BE TO USE A SMALLER PLATE TO CONTROL PORTION SIZE, USE SPICES/HERBS TO FLAVOR FOOD INSTEAD OF SALT, AND READ PACKAGED FOOD LABELS TO MAKE HEALTHIER CHOICES AS RECOMMENDED FROM THE GLOBAL COUNCIL ON BRAIN HEALTH CONVENED BY AARP.

ASIDE FROM WATCHING WHAT WE EAT, WHAT COULD WE DO AROUND THE TABLE?

TALK ABOUT HEALTH. RECENTLY, THROUGH A TELEPHONE TOWN HALL CO-HOSTED WITH THE 100 BLACK MEN OF AMERICA, WE WERE ABLE TO REACH OUT AND CONNECT ON THE TOPIC OF PRE-DIABETES AMONG THE AFRICAN AMERICAN/BLACK COMMUNITY, A POPULATION AT HIGH RISK FOR THE CONDITION ACCORDING TO THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION. ONE IN THREE AMERICAN ADULTS HAVE PRE-DIABETES AND NEARLY 90% OF THOSE DON’T EVEN KNOW THEY HAVE IT, AS STATED BY THE C-D-C. TO LEARN MORE AND TAKE THE PREDIABETES RISK TEST, GO TO AARP.ORG/PREDIABETES.

WE HAVE LISTENERS FROM ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY THAT MAY BE TRAVELLING TO THEIR LOVED ONES THIS HOLIDAY. WHAT ARE SOME HEALTHY LIVING TIPS THEY CAN TAKE AWAY?

WHILE YOU ARE TRAVELING, STAY HYDRATED. USE EYE DROPS AND A SALINE NASAL SPRAY, SAYS SHARON BERQUIST, M.D. AT EMORY HEALTHCARE IN ATLANTA. SHE ALSO RECOMMENDS TO DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS, PARTICULARLY IF YOU ARE ON MEDICATION. HOT DRINKS ARE GOOD FOR HYDRATION AND THE STEAM WILL HELP MOISTURIZE MUCUS MEMBRANES, A BARRIER AGAINST BACTERIAL VIRUSES IN THE NOSE AND MOUTH.

IF YOU ARE ON A FLIGHT, BE AWARE THAT ALCOHOL CAN DEHYDRATE YOU. ALSO ON LONG FLIGHTS, GET UP AND WALK EVERY TWO HOURS TO LOWER YOUR RISK OF BLOOD CLOTS IN YOUR LEGS.

USE AN AIR VENT IF YOU HAVE ONE IN THE PLANE, TRAIN, OR CAR. THE AIR VENT HELPS CREATE AIR FLOW THAT WILL MOVE GERMS OUT OF YOUR SPACE.

ALSO TO HELP KEEP AWAY THE GERMS, BRING AN ALCOHOL-BASED GEL SANITIZER – ONE WITH AT LEAST 60% – TO USE ON YOUR HANDS AFTER TOUCHING SURFACES THAT OTHERS MAY TOUCH FREQUENTLY – LIKE A DOOR HANDLE.

WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEW YEAR FROM AARP?

LOOK OUT FOR ANOTHER FIT AND FUN CHALLENGE AND OTHER HEALTHY LIVING EVENTS, SUCH AS A TELEPHONE TOWN HALL. SO STAYED TUNED FOR MORE HEALTHY LIVING GUIDANCE, TOOLS, AND SOLUTIONS THAT WE CAN PUT TO USE AT AARP.ORG/HEALTH.

Single During The Holidays? It Doesn’t Mean Being Lonely Or Alone

As the holiday season starts, singles may face questions from friends and family: “When are you getting serious about dating?”

In many families, seasonal festivities draw lines between who’s coupled and who’s not. Romantic partners are invited to holiday meals, included in family photographs, and seen as potential life mates – while “mere” friends are not. These practices draw a line between relationships seen as significant – and those which aren’t.

As I’ve argued in my research on the ethics and politics of the family, these practices reflect widespread assumptions. One is that everyone is seeking a romantic relationship. The second is more value-laden: living in a long-term romantic, sexual partnership is better than living without one. This fuels beliefs that those living solo are less happy, or lonelier, than couples.

These assumptions are so prevalent that they guide many social interactions. But research shows they’re false.

Why more Americans are living single

The truth is that more Americans are living unmarried and without a romantic partner. In 2005, the census for the first time recorded a majority of women living outside of marriage Although, of course, some unmarried women have romantic partners.

By 2010, married couples became a minority in the United States. The percentage of unmarried adults is at an all-time high, with more young adults choosing to live unmarried and without a romantic partner.

Personal finances likely plays a role in such choices. Millennials are worse off than earlier generations. There is a proven connection between economic resources and marriage rates – what legal scholar Linda McClain calls “the other marriage equality problem.” Lower incomes correlate with lower rates of marriage.

But changing family patterns are not simply the result of financial instability. They reflect choices: Not everyone wants romantic partnership and many singles see solo life as more conducive to flourishing and autonomy.

Single by choice

As I show in my book “Minimizing Marriage,” people have many different political or ethical reasons for preferring singlehood.

Some women become single mothers by choice. As sociologist Arlie Hochschild has argued, marriage brings extra work for women, making it less attractive than single life for some.

For other people, being single is simply a relationship preference or even an orientation. For example, there are those, referred to as “asexuals” and “aromantics,” who lack interest in sexual and romantic relationships.

Who are asexuals and aromantics?

Data from a 1994 British survey of more than 18,000 people showed 1 percent of the respondents to be asexual. Because asexuality is still little-known, some asexuals might not identify as such. And so, it’s possible that the true numbers could be higher.

Asexuals are people who do not feel sexual attraction. Asexuality is not simply the behavior of abstaining from sex, but an orientation. Just as straight people feel sexual attraction to members of a different sex, and gays and lesbians feel attraction to members of the same sex, asexuals simply do not feel sexual attraction. Asexuals can have romantic feelings, wanting a life partner to share intimate moments with and even cuddle – but without sexual feelings.

But some asexuals are also aromantic, that is, not interested in romantic relationships. Like asexuality, aromanticism is an orientation. Aromantics may have sexual feelings or be asexual, but they do not have romantic feelings. Both asexuals and aromantics face a lack of understanding.

Angela Chen, a journalist writing a book about asexuality, reports that her asexual interview subjects suffered from a lack of information about asexuality. As they failed to develop sexual attractions during puberty – while their classmates did – they asked themselves, “Am I normal? Is something wrong with me?”

But while asexuality is sometimes misunderstood as a medical disorder, there are many differences between an asexual orientation and a medical disorder causing a low sex drive. When asexuals are treated as “abnormal” by doctors or therapists, it does them a disservice.

Since the early 2000s, asexuals have exchanged ideas and organized through online groups. One such group, The Asexual Visibility and Education Network, for example, promotes the understanding that lack of sexual attraction is normal for asexuals, and lack of romantic feelings is normal for aromantics.

Asexuals, like aromantics, challenge the expectation that everyone wants a romantic, sexual partnership. They don’t. Nor do they believe that they would be better off with one.

Single and alone – or lonely?

Far from the stereotype of the lonely single, lifelong singles are less lonely than other older people, according to psychologist Bella DePaulo, the author of “Singled Out.” Nor are singles alone.

Many singles have close friendships which are just as valuable as romantic partnerships. But assumptions that friendships are less significant than romantic partnerships hide their value.

Understanding the reasons people have for remaining single might help to handle family stresses. If you’re single, you could take unwanted questioning as a teachable moment. If you’re the friend or family member of someone who tells you they’re happily single – believe them.

Azealia Banks Slams Offset For Cardi B Ambush And 21 Savage Supports Him During A Concert And Gets The Crowd To Sing ‘Cardi, Take Offset Back’

It was recently reported that Offset managed to embarrass Cardi even more during one of her concerts. The man showed up on stage during one of her shows to beg her once again to take him back.

People understood that he had the best intentions, but Cardi was not impressed at all, and it’s quite understandable.

After doing this, Offset posted a message on social media in which he was saying that he felt like a public apology was necessary after his cheating became a public matter as well.

This message did not impress fans at all, and they slammed him saying that he is only sorry because he got caught.

More celebrities got themselves involved in the drama and supported Cardi B or Offset. For instance, Azealia Banks also chose to speak on the recent events surrounding Cardi B, and Offset.

‘I think it’s messed up that men think it’s okay to desecrate her workspace with their opinions of what she should be doing. No clue why think it’s okay to just barge in on women when they feel like it,’ she posted on Instagram.

She continued and wrote that ‘If it were the other way around they would be bashing the woman saying she’s no good, calling her a hoe, etc. etc…but since it’s the man they expect it to be accepted as part of his hip-hop persona and everyone will rush to defend them.’

Another rapper, 21 Savage seems to be ‘team Offset’ because he got the crowd to ask Cardi to take her hubby back during a concert.

21 Savage got everyone chanting, ‘Cardi B, Take Offset Back!’

What do you think Cardi should do?

MILAN — Gucci will cap off the upcoming Men’s Fashion Week in January with a performance event here.
As Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana president Carlo Capasa revealed during a press conference on Wednesday presenting the schedule of the city’s upcoming fashion week, the fashion label — which will return to Milan in February with a coed show after it decamped to Paris last September for one season — will host the “Motus presents MDLSX with Silvia Calderoni” performance event at its Gucci hub headquarters on Jan. 14. The performance, which will be produced by independent theater company Motus and directed by Enrico Casagrande and Daniela Nicolò, will blend a monologue by Calderoni and video projections exploring the notion of gender identity in a play inspired by the 2003 novel “Middlesex” by American writer Jeffrey Eugenides. Capasa dubbed the event “not to be missed,” noting how important it is for Gucci to be part of the official schedule.

I’m working on my sobriety, so I talked to experts about staying sober during the holidays

I’m working on my sobriety, so I talked to experts about staying sober during the holidays

I’m working on my sobriety, so I talked to experts about staying sober during the holidays

When I celebrated Thanksgiving with my family in 2017, I had recently survived a nervous breakdown, had just begun taking antidepressants for my bipolar disorder, was keeping myself afloat on three months of unemployment, and had started to see the cracks in my abusive relationship. It had been a tough year. I wanted to escape those feelings, so I attached myself to the family bar cart in the living room. I overindulged on whatever wine I could get in my glass so I could avoid the interrogation: “How’s the job? Where’s Adam?” etc.

It wasn’t long after Thanksgiving dinner when I decided to become semi-sober. I surrounded myself with other sober women (shoutout to Sarah Ordo, Cara Alwill Leyba, and the Slaying Sobriety Group) and started thinking about how I leaned on alcohol to cope with my life. I became more successful in my career, had a clearer mind, and generally felt more in touch with myself. I was thriving in my new lifestyle.

Then my father died by suicide in July, and maintaining my sobriety got a lot harder.

Holiday season is in full swing, and navigating this time of year can be difficult for anyone. Keep in mind, however, that holiday socializing is often associated with alcohol, and, more often than not, it is associated with overindulgence. For those of us who have chosen sobriety, semi-sobriety, or just more mindful drinking, the holidays can be a minefield of difficult situations.

“The holidays pose a particular risk to those in recovery for a variety of reasons. First, the holiday season can amplify loss, grief, stress, and loneliness in people working to maintain their recovery. To prevent relapse triggers, it is critical for those in recovery to avoid isolation and maintain a normal routine,” states Dr. Brent Boyett, Chief Medical Officer at addiction treatment center Pathway Healthcare.

So I connected with some more experts and got their advice on navigating sobriety during the holiday season:

1. Establish boundaries

“Sobriety is a lifelong journey that requires you to abstain from alcohol and drugs. Once you make that your number-one priority, you’ll know what your next steps are. If you really want to see your friends during the holidays, explain to them that you would love to spend time with them, but you can’t drink or hang out in a bar,” says Carolee Paruta, Clinician and Regional Director of Outpatient Services at Mountainside.

Paruta suggests offering alternatives to friends who ask to make plans. “Maybe you all can go to an early dinner or catch a movie. Make sure that they are aware of what your boundaries are,” she says. “Establishing boundaries will help you and your friends know what to expect and prevent you from being put in uncomfortable situations that could derail your progress. The same goes for family.”

Paruta explains that “friends” who can’t understand this part of your life are probably not supposed to be your friends, or at least not people with whom you should spend your time. “It might be difficult to hear that, but you have to remember that doing what is best for your recovery is what is most important,” she says. “Being sober isn’t all that you are, but it is a big part of you. You need friends in your life who don’t just accept that fact, but support you.”

2. Create a dialogue

Be honest, but that doesn’t mean you have to divulge your personal reasons for sobriety. Laura Taylor, founder of Mingle Mocktails, says, “When someone asks me why I am not drinking, my response is always short and sweet: ‘I am taking a break’ or ‘I just don’t drink.’ I’ve learned that most people just ask out of light curiosity and are satisfied with these simple responses…I’ve found that those individuals who continue to probe with more questions are asking because they’re considering their own drinking issues or thinking about someone in their lives who may have drinking issues.”

Taylor acknowledges that these questions are less stressful now that she has been sober for a few years, but regardless, she believes that brevity is key: “There are other, more interesting topics to discuss at parties than my drinking habits.”

3. BYOBeverage

“I am amazed at how few hosts stop to consider what non-drinkers would like to drink. The default options are typically soda or seltzer, and neither are exciting,” Taylor continues. “Hosts [should] consider their non-drinking guests, and have at least one premium non-alcoholic option on hand, like flavored seltzer, ready to drink mocktails, or fresh juices.” My mother and I are personally fans of La Croix in a wine glass, Canada Dry Cranberry Ginger Ale, or DRY Sparkling Soda in the lavender flavor, and in 2018, we have so many options.

Taylor suggests that hosts ask party guests for non-alcoholic drink preferences in advance. “This need is what inspired me to create my own line of ready to drink mocktails, Mingle Mocktails,” she says. “Non-drinkers deserve something fun, festive, and sophisticated so they can feel…socially connected in these situations.”

4. Seek support and have a network

I suffer from complex traumas, so I lean on my amazing therapist. But I also surround myself with like-minded women in the Slaying Sobriety Group on Facebook, a nationwide network of women who encourage and support each others’ sobriety.

It’s important to have this support from some kind of network since family and friends can unknowingly—but harmfully—attempt to enable unhealthy behaviors. Dr. Boyett tells me, “Though sometimes hard, people in recovery should avoid family and friends who frequently use drugs or alcohol. Many times, family and friends just don’t understand how fragile the recovery process can be. Offering drugs or alcohol to a person in early recovery can result in life-threatening relapse.”

Posted by Sarah Ordo on Friday, July 27, 2018

5. Remember that you are not alone

If you or someone you know is struggling this holiday season, there are organizations ready to help you. This is not something you have to face alone. You can call Alcoholics Anonymous at 212-870-3400 and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) at 800-662-HELP (4357)—which is available 24 hours a day.

You can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255), available 24 hours a day.

Izzue to Launch Capsule With CSM and to Show During London Fashion Week

FIRST TIME AROUND: Hong Kong fashion brand Izzue is throwing a 20th birthday bash in the form of a runway show during London Fashion Week in February. This will be the first time that Izzue’s men’s and women’s pieces will be showcased on a London runway.
“London has always been a source of inspiration for Izzue. It has always embodied British punk, so to show outside of Asia needed to be a natural next step and it needed to make sense, so it had to be London,” said Deborah Cheng, chief commercial officer at I.T group.
Izzue, which is under the multibrand I.T Group, has formed ties with London since 2013 when they launched in the U.K. in Selfridges. Since then, the brand has gone from being a pop-up to having a dedicated space in the department store’s Contemporary Studio on the third floor.
“Our pop-up was so successful back in 2013 that we were offered a permanent space on the ground floor right after, and to this day we are still exceeding their expectations. We’ve grown with Selfridges and now we are located in the Contemporary Studio,” said Cheng.
On top of its runway show debut, the brand is also launching a capsule collection with

How To Stop Overspending During The Holidays

With unemployment at historic lows, rising wages and consumer confidence have hit an 18-year-high. Consumers are understandably in good cheer and ready to go out and spend this holiday season.

But for you, the thrill of the deal can quickly turn in to despair over the debt if you go overboard with your holiday gift giving.

Here’s how to keep your budget in check during the holiday shopping season.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO APPROACH HOLIDAY SHOPPING IF WE DON’T WANT THINGS TO GET OUT OF HAND?

If there’s one thing that I hope people ask for, and get, this Christmas, it’s discipline. All the budgeting “tips and tricks” in the world won’t help you if you can’t control yourself. Yet, relying on willpower alone won’t be enough to get the job done. You need a system.

Here’s what I suggest:

  1. Build a Budget– This sounds simple, but on one likes to do this. You have to go into shopping season with a set amount that you’re committed to not outspend. When you do this, be sure to include ALL of your costs such as wrapping, shipping, travel, etc.
  2. Save All Year– You do realize that Christmas happens at the same time every year, right? So why do you seem so surprised when Black Friday rolls around and you haven’t set aside any money for gifts?

Americans are expected to spend $ 1000 on average during the holiday shopping season.  That’s $ 80/month or $ 20.00/week you should save in advance.

3Create a Separate Account – Don’t keep your “gift” money in the same account as your “bill” money. Open a free checking account or put money onto a prepaid debit card that will only be used for your holiday shopping. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

Never Use Credit – Buying something on sale, but using credit to do so and paying the minimum each month totally defeats the purpose of getting the deal in the first place. Only use your credit card if you’re getting points or rewards and you’re going to pay it off in full when the bill comes.

OK, BUT WHAT IF WE DIDN’T SAVE UP MUCH MONEY FOR CHRISTMAS, WHAT SHOULD WE DO THEN?

In that case, it’s time to think about generating some extra cash. Luckily, since there’s so much spending going on during the holiday season, there should be lots of opportunities to do this.

For example you can:

Convert Old Gift Cards – Check your wallet for unused or partially used gift cards. Use the balance for gifts, or use a site like CardCash.com to convert those balances to cash.

Sell Your Junk! – Go through your garage and your closet to find things that still have tags or haven’t been used in a while.  Sell these things on eBay, Poshmark, etc.

Donate Items – Donate the things you can’t sell to Goodwill, etc.  You’ll get the advantage of the tax deduction, which may put extra cash in your pocket at tax time.

BUT WHAT IF PEOPLE ARE EXPECTING EXPENSIVE GIFTS?

Look, you have to take charge and set the expectations up front.

With Your Kids – This is a great time to discuss needs vs. wants and priorities with your kids.  They may not be able to get everything they want, so give them a say in what is most important to them.

With Your Family – Perhaps set up a Secret Santa gift exchange where each family member only has to buy one gift. Try secretsanta.com or Elfster to set up your exchange.

With Yourself – Buying great presents won’t make you a better friend, spouse or parent. Have a real discussion about what the most important people in your life really want, and you might find that it may not cost you anything at all.

Spector tweeted: “If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here.”

West later apologized in a reply on Twitter for his “lack of etiquette.” He wrote “the dynamics of Cher and Sonny’s relationship made Kim and I grab each other’s hand and sing “I got you babe.”

Kardashian West is a huge Cher fan.

Kendall Jenner bonds with Ben Simmons’ mother during NBA game

OHMYGOSSIP — Kendall Jenner bonded with Ben Simmons’ mother during an NBA game on Friday night (30.11.18).
The 23-year-old model’s relationship with the 22-year-old basketball star appears to have become more serious over recent weeks, with Kendall now becoming a frequent guest at Ben’s games.
The brunette beauty was spotted laughing and joking with Ben’s mother Julie Simmons as they both supported the Australian star and his Philadelphia 76ers team.
The pair appeared happy and relaxed together as Ben helped his team to a 123-98 victory against the Washington Wizards.
Despite remaining tight-lipped about their burgeoning romance, Kendall’s increased presence at 76ers games is being seen as a sign that things are heating up between the celebrity duo.
However, an insider recently insisted that Kendall and Ben don’t want to put any “stress or pressure” on their relationship.
The high-profile pair are eager to ensure they don’t take things too fast.
A source explained: “Kendall and Ben have been making more of an effort in their relationship recently, and have been seeing each other regularly for the last month now.
“They both are very busy with their careers, but have always been in touch.”
Kendall and Ben were rumoured to have ended their romance earlier this year.
But it’s since been claimed that they are instead simply keen to make sure they don’t rush things or become too intense.
The insider explained: “They never had a falling out, it was just always hard for Kendall because of her work schedule.
“They reconnected when Ben was in town recently and have been seeing each other since.
“Kendall really likes Ben and he has been keeping her attention. They try not to put stress or pressure on the relationship, but Kendall isn’t actively seeing anyone else right now.”

Kanye West called out on Twitter for being on his phone during Broadway performance

TwitterFacebook

Being on your phone during a stage production is considered pretty rude, especially if it’s opening night, and even if you’re Kanye West.

The artist was called out on Twitter by one of the stars of Cher-inspired musical The Cher Show, Jarrod Spector, for spending time on his phone during Monday’s opening night performance.

West was attending the show with his wife, Kim Kardashian West, a couple that weren’t ever going to blend in with the crowd — or the cast.

“If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here,” tweeted Spector, who plays Sonny Bono, while the performance was underway. Read more…

Michelle Obama got painfully real about women “having it all” during the New York stop of her Becoming book tour

Michelle Obama got painfully real about women “having it all” during the New York stop of her Becoming book tour

Michelle Obama got painfully real about women “having it all” during the New York stop of her <em>Becoming</em> book tour

Michelle Obama is currently touring the U.S. to talk about her new memoir, Becoming. In the book, she writes openly and honestly about everything from her struggles with fertility to attending marriage counseling to how to find a Barack Obama of your own. So it’s no surprise that when I attended the first New York stop of her Becoming book tour, I was completely blown away by her words and stories.

On Saturday, December 1st, our forever First Lady stopped by the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The event was moderated by Elizabeth Alexander, a poet, essayist, playwright, and longtime friend of Obama’s. You may recognize Alexander as the woman who recited the poem “Praise Song for the Day” (which she wrote) at President Obama’s 2009 inauguration.

Throughout the night, Obama also dropped a lot of wisdom about parenting, vulnerability, and the importance of female friendships. She also opened up about the struggles of being a working mom, saying that years ago, there was a time when she was balancing a full-time job as a lawyer with raising her daughters Sasha and Malia. And during that time, her husband was often out of town in Washington, D.C., campaigning, or traveling for work.

In a very candid moment, Obama got super real about how women still can’t “have it all.”

“Marriage still ain’t equal, y’all. It ain’t equal. And I tell women that it’s not equal—that whole ‘so you can have it all’? Nope, not at the same time. That’s a lie. And it’s not always enough to lean in, because that shit doesn’t work all the time. … I’m back. I thought we were at home, y’all. I was gettin’ real comfortable up in here. But I’m back now. But sometimes, that STUFF doesn’t work. So oftentimes, it’s not equal, and you feel a bit resentful about it. And so then it’s time to go to marriage counseling.”

Obama also spoke at length about her parents, Marian and the late Fraser Robinson, and the values they instilled in her at a young age.

“I had a childhood with parents who didn’t have a lot in the way of money, but they had a lot in the way of value and character and love and stability and consistency. And I want parents to understand that I became who I am not because my parents were networked or college educated or had a lot of money or knew a lot of stuff about things that they thought we needed to know. They gave us absolutely what we needed, which was love and trust and the values that they came here with. And THAT’S what kids need. That will get them through.”

In a more serious moment, Obama spoke about the dangers of being a woman in today’s world.

“The world is dangerous, sadly, for women. I want us to just kinda sit with that for a minute, because it’s usually men who make it dangerous for us. And it doesn’t always look like physical abuse. It doesn’t always look the same. It’s those little cuts. Those little negative comments. It’s somebody, when you’re walking down the street and some man looks at you and makes a comment about you, as if you wanted…that’s a cut. That’s a slice into a woman’s self-esteem, when somebody talks down to them. If you talk down to women at all, and a woman is in earshot of what you’re saying, that’s a cut to her. And then the cuts get deeper, because there’s abuse and there’s rape. There’s sexual assault. There’s all this that we’re hearing. The world is unsafe for women, and I want our men to understand that about what role they’re playing to make us feel safe or unsafe. But I grew up in safety and security. I grew up where I trusted men to take care of me. And I think that that gave me a level of strength that carries me through to this day.”

Obama also spoke about attending marriage counseling with her husband.

“What I learned in counseling was that I was responsible for my own happiness. And that was part of my frustration. I expected my husband now to not only just be my partner, but to fill me up in ways that were my responsibility. Counseling helped me to sort of take a step back and look at, ‘How do I take control of my own happiness within our marriage?’ And how to prioritize myself. Because that’s what we do as women. We’re so busy puttin’ everyone else before us. And then we burn out. We’re like, fourth on our list, or fifth on our list.”

Obama thanked her girlfriends for their friendship and reminded women to lean on each other, not turn against each other.

“Sometimes we can’t do this alone, and we shouldn’t have to. I relied on my girlfriends to get me through one of the hardest eight years of my life. … We have to remember to be that for each other. We have to be each other’s light. We cannot get into that catty stuff. We have to find a way to continue to lift other women up in our worlds and in our lives as much as possible, you all. It is the only reason why I’m breathing. I couldn’t have gotten through raising my kids with a husband traveling without my girls.”

Above all else, Obama hoped to inspire everyone to become who they’re meant to be.

She reminded the audience that it’s okay to be open up and be vulnerable.

“My hope is that this book will inspire everyone to tap into their own journeys of becoming and to share those stories with one another.”

Becoming is available wherever books are sold.

Mariah Carey Slammed For Not Putting Seatbelts On Her Kids During Car Ride!

Safety first, singing second! The songstress was slammed on social media for not putting the seatbelts on her young ones while in the car.

Mariah Carey got mom shamed online as users were not at all happy about the fact that the star ignored this basic safety measure, especially since her adorable twins were involved!

It all started when the woman shared a clip on her Instagram page that showed the children in the backseat of a car.

While Moroccan and Monroe were super cute singing backup vocals for their mom’s hit All I Want For Christmas Is You, what a lot of Mariah’s followers really focused on was the fact that she had not strapped them in with a seatbelt.

‘Jesus buckle up your kids!!!! I lost a cousin in an accident he would not even have a scratch if he was buckled up!! You should get a visit from CPS! This hits a nerve and a traumatic memory for sure!’ one person commented.

And that was not the only upset user that felt like slamming Carey for her mistake.

‘How about you put your kids in seatbelts wtf how dare you! But when something happens, you find something to back you up HOW ABOUT BUCKLE THEM UP NOW,’ a second comment out of many similar ones reads. Yikes!

Do you think she deserves to be in hot water for her video of the kids in the car without seat belts on or not?

Is Mariah Carey an irresponsible mother or are people going too far with their mom-shaming?

5 Tips for Managing Diabetes during National Diabetes Month

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global prevalence of diabetes among adults over 18 years of age rose from 4.7 percent in 1980 to 8.5 percent in 2014. A 2016 Harris Poll conducted for the Calorie Control Council revealed 20 percent of U.S. consumers reported having been diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes by a medical professional.

With November being National Diabetes Month, Karima Kendall, Ph.D., RDN, LDN of the Calorie Control Council (CCC), has outlined five tips for managing this disease impacting an increasing number of people.

1. Manage stress

Too much stress is unhealthy for anyone, especially for those living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. In addition to stress causing people to forget or not have time to check blood sugar levels or plan healthy meals, stress hormones can directly alter blood sugar levels. Making an effort to reduce stress by implementing tactics such as fitness classes, breathing exercises, and other relaxing hobbies will only help in diabetes management.

2. Get up and move at least 30 minutes a day

Exercise helps increase insulin sensitivity. This means the cells in your muscles are better able to use any available insulin to take up glucose during and after physical activity. In addition to helping lower blood glucose in the short term, exercise on a consistent, regular basis can lower your A1C. Aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a day. Be mindful, however, that low blood sugars can occur during and up to 24 hours after physical activity, and are more likely to occur if you take insulin, skip meals, or exercise intensely or for a long period of time.

3. Take advantage of low- and no-calorie sweeteners

Dealing with diabetes on a daily basis is hard enough without having to give up the sweet treats you enjoy. There are several low- and no-calorie sweeteners available that are safe to consume and provide the same sweetness as sugar, but without impacting blood glucose levels. In addition to being found in packaged foods and beverages, many of these sweeteners can be purchased at the grocery store and serve as stand-alone sweeteners for use in your own recipes. Given the holiday treats enjoyed this time of year at seasonal gatherings, these sweeteners can help you have your sweet frozen hot chocolate – and drink it too! For more information on low- and no-calorie sweeteners and diabetes, including carb-smart recipes, visit here.

4. Ward off sickness

Physical stress, such as illness or injury, causes higher blood glucose levels in people living with diabetes. With cold and flu season upon us, make sure to get your flu shot, eat well, and wash your hands frequently. In addition, talk to your doctor about adjustments you may need to make to your personal diabetes management routine and insulin dosing (if appropriate) in the event you get sick.

5. Remember, don’t let ‘perfect’ be the enemy of ‘good’

Although there are differences in the management of type 1 versus type 2 diabetes, maintaining a perfect blood sugar 100 percent of the time is simply not possible, no matter how closely you monitor and manage your diabetes. Even those without diabetes experience moderate spikes and lows in their blood sugar levels. Instead, focus on living a balanced lifestyle full of things that motivate you, instead of letting occasional bad blood sugar levels discourage you. You control your diabetes – not the other way around!

This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of Calorie Control Council from November 16-18, 2016 among 2,074 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. The 7 Best Games to “Stream Binge” During the Holidays

As we enter the holiday shopping season, let’s be brutally honest for a second: AAA video games are expensive. And, even if we could afford to buy them all, how would you have the time to sit in front of your couch/computer to play them? That’s the beauty of game streaming — you can still get your fix of your favorite games while on the go or multitasking while being entertained by some hilarious personalities at the same time.

Facebook Gaming has jumped into the game streaming scene with a ton of great streamers to watch playing the season’s best games. Here are the ones to look out for when you’re ready to binge stream over the holidays.

Be vewy, vewy quiet. We're hunting noobs...

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

We know, we know — historically speaking Call of Duty isn’t the most beloved of series after 20 years of franchise fatigue. That said, Treyarch has really turned things around with the Blackout mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, an absolutely thrilling-to-watch Call of Duty take on PUBG‘s battle royale format. Yep, it’s 100 players, parachuted into an ever-shrinking open-world arena, only this time you have the hyper-tuned and blisteringly fast Call of Duty gunplay that’s basically unparalleled in this genre.

FB Streamers to seek out: Ricky Live, Themarkofj, Kilo gaming

Squad goals, Dubya Dubya Two

Battlefield V

Though it’s the last one out of the gate in 2018 (in terms of AAA first-person shooters, at least) Battlefield V‘s multiplayer has already found itself a huge streaming audience. And what’s not to love here? You’re getting good ol’ fashioned Allies vs. Axis battles in some of the prettiest, largest, and most destructible arenas in PvP gaming. Better yet, each match is like watching a mini-series as each victory or defeat dynamically shapes the objectives for the next “day” of the conflict (3 days total). Thrilling stuff to watch, and witnessing half a team get wiped out by a V1 rocket strike will never not be glorious.

FB Streamers to seek out: Rivalxfactor, LevelCap, Donardim

&quot;Hey, you, let's fight!&quot; Them's FIGHTIN' words! *draws gun*

Red Dead Redemption 2

At the time of writing, Rockstar’s ambitious cowboy epic Red Dead Redemption 2 is looking like a lock for GOTY 2018. This is less a video game and more a cultural event that needs to be experienced by as many folks as possible — and we wouldn’t hand out that sort of praise lightly. Drop into a stream and see what the fuss is all about with the solo campaign (but know you’re walking through a spoiler minefield). Alternatively, skirt all that for the soon-to-be-released MP component, Red Dead Online. There’s nothing cooler than watching a streamer who can single-handedly waste an enemy posse with Eastwood-level gunslinging skills.

FB Streamers to seek out: Glitchy, Darkness429, Amplified

Camouflage in an incredibly hostile environment: overrated. Look to your Halloween wear instead.

Fortnite

You didn’t seriously think you’d get through this list without seeing Fortnite in it, did you? Though its popularity may be on the wane due to the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and other newer titles, Fortnite still does big viewing numbers. It has staying power because its unique, build-happy mechanics set it apart from its battle royale genre brethren. Watching somebody deftly speed-construct a cubby house — and headshot an aggressor who’s trying to scale it — is popcorn-worthy stuff. If Bob the Builder then accidentally trips off their structure and dies from fall damage? Even more entertaining.

FB Streamers to seek out: DiMez, Good Game Bro

&quot;Guys, I actually forgot our lunch boxes so we'll have to eat irradiated dogs instead.&quot; DAMN IT, STEVE!

Fallout 76

Though dyed-in-the-wool diehards of Fallout 4 aren’t exactly shouting their praises of this game from the rooftops right now, the fact is Fallout 76 is a damn good first-effort from a studio that’s still relatively new to the MMORPG genre. Yes, Fallout 76 is devoid of NPCs and script-heavy narrative threads, but it still makes for great viewing because watching four-person teams of Vault Dwellers work together (or stab one another) is riveting. It also helps that the play-space of Appalachia takes this franchise to new heights in terms of prettiness and color. Almost heaven, West Virginia…

FB Streamers to seek out: Austin John Plays, Open World Video Games

You'd need seriously big cojones to take on a God of War and -- oh, there they are. Costume malfunction.

God of War

Released earlier on in 2018, the quality of God of War blindsided us and put it on a fast-track to the GOTY award — until Rockstar dropped its cowboy odyssey, Red Dead Redemption 2. Be that as it may, you need to forget everything you think you know about this franchise and give this new direction a look in. Click into a stream and expect to be greeted with absolutely gorgeous visuals (emphasis on the gore), top-shelf digital performances, and meaty, mythological brawling. As far as game-changing sequels and reboots go, wow, this is one for the ages. God-like, you could say.

FB Streamers to seek out: Das_Pickle, Papawteyto

Pictured: the most spatially-unaware PUBG solo players ever. Geez. Check your peripherals, people.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Much like Fortnite, you were never not going to see this in our top picks. Behold PUBG, the one that started the battle royale craze off way back in March 2017. How successful was its concept of making 100 players murder one another in an ever-shrinking Thunderdome? Oh, you know – just 50 million copies sold and climbing. At the time of writing the PC player base is still incredibly active, though the console versions on Xbox (and soon to be PS4) aren’t nearly as big, due to iffy port issues. If you’ve never witnessed the intensity of a PUBG match before, log onto a stream and prepare to experience a painful cramp in your caboose. Sitting on the edge of a seat will do that to a butt.

FB Streamers to seek out: Yasumeow, Ishpaghetti, Powerbang Gaming

Danielle Harris Opens Up About Her ‘Near Death’ Experience During Delivery of Son Jagger

Almost a month after welcoming her baby boy, Danielle Harris is opening up about her difficult delivery.

Before sharing the story of her “traumatic” experience, the Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead star and famed scream queen, 41, wrote a sweet tribute to her 4-week-old son Jagger Maxwell — her second child with husband David Gross.

“Introducing … Jagger Maxwell Gross Born 10/8/2018 !!!!” she wrote on Instagram over the weekend, alongside the first photo the actress has shared of her bundle of joy.

“Mommy and Daddy are so lucky to be able to add you to our family. We are a fierce 4some now and can’t wait to watch you grow and live this life as our baby boy and little brother to the BEST big brother a boy could ask for!!” she continued, referring to the couple’s older son Carter Davis, 20 months.

Explaining why it took her so long to share her harrowing story — or even post a photo of her child — the mother of two wrote that she just needed a little time to herself.

“Giving birth is the most dangerous thing a woman can do in her lifetime … after my traumatic birth experience this time around, it took me a while to share a photo with the world,” Harris wrote. “Time was really needed to clear my head and bond with my baby just he and I in our own private little bubble.”

During the delivery, Harris had a “horrible eclampsia seizure on the operating table” and “blacked out,” missing the birth of her son.

“I saw moments of my life flashing before me in fast forward and I missed the birth of my baby,” she wrote. “Needless to say that was the closest to a near death experience as I’d ever come in real life.”

The Halloween franchise actress went on to share that she’s “forever grateful and blessed” to have made it out of the delivery room alive.

“Dying during childbirth was definitely not on my list of ways I thought I would leave this world and I’m glad to cross that possibility off my list,” she wrote.

“Life is short. You never know when your number is gonna be up, so take time to enjoy what matters most,” Harris advised her followers. “Love one another and love yourself because the world wouldn’t be the same without you … ”
