What Women’s Election Day Victories Mean for the Affordable Care Act

Women’s economic security and access to health care have been under threat since long before President Trump took office, but his election acted as a catalyst—accelerating attacks on our bodily autonomy, health and basic rights. Trump and his allies have undermined the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in every branch of our government—pushing policies that destabilized the insurance market, caused premiums to skyrocket and expanded short-term junk insurance policies that don’t cover basic services like maternity care.

The midterm results were a direct reproach to that agenda. More women ran for and won elected office than ever before, often building platforms around protecting the ACA and pre-existing conditions—and health care was cited time and again as the top issue for women voters, who carried them to victory.

Feminists demonstrated at the Supreme Court in support of the Affordable Care Act in 2016 during oral arguments in a case seeking to weaken its contraceptive coverage mandate. (Victoria Pickering / Creative Commons)

None of this should come as a surprise. Women, especially women of color, have benefitted exponentially from the ACA. Since its implementation, 9.5 million women have gained health insurance and 55 million women are now guaranteed essential benefits like maternity care and birth control coverage, which were often excluded from policies previously. Before the ACA, insurers also routinely charged women up to 1.5 times more than men for the same policy because of common health issues like endometriosis, depression or even pregnancy, and nearly 80 percent of women become mothers but giving birth or having been pregnant was considered a pre-existing condition. Experts estimate that over half of all women and girls—67 million people—have pre-existing conditions. Thanks to the ACA, we’re now protected against that kind of gender discrimination.

The election of more than 100 women to Congress also served as a lightning rod of resistance against the scaled-up attacks on women’s reproductive health and rights that we’ve seen over the past two years, issues that go right to the core of women’s equality and economic security, and made clear a national demand for representation in Congress that reflects the current demographics and values of our country. Polls show that support for legal abortion is at historic highs among Democratic women voters, and growing among Republicans. (More than half of Republican women want Roe v. Wade kept intact.)

That’s also no surprise: One in four U.S. women will have an abortion before she’s 45, and those women are Democrats and Republicans. If we lose Roe, women everywhere will suffer—and women across party lines and state lines know that the right to our autonomy is the right to our destiny. Women know that the ability to choose if, when and how to have kids is inextricably linked to their economic success, health and wellbeing. Restricting or denying abortion access does irrevocable harm to our careers, families and economic security; research shows that women who are denied abortions and forced to carry pregnancies to term are four times more likely to experience poverty. Unwanted births also result in negative outcomes for children compared with planned pregnancies.

Make no mistake: the anti-abortion movement definitely had some wins this year, including the passage of personhood measures in Alabama and West Virginia and the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. But the wave of feminists taking seats in the House come January will surely stymy some of the persistent efforts to shame, pressure and punish women for the decisions they make about their own lives that we’ve seen growing under Trump’s administration.

The majority of women voters cast their ballots for Democrats because they know women cannot be equal without reliable access to affordable health care and the ability to make choices about their bodies. In November, 41 percent of voters cited health care as the issue driving them to the polls. Women make up half of the population, the workforce and the electorate. Recognition for our voting power across party lines is long overdue, and guaranteeing women the right to plan their own families, and futures, is a fundamental part of that.

The historic wins for women on Election Day were also victories for the Affordable Care Act and the people who rely on its benefits—and that’s no coincidence. In Washington, the new feminists in Congress will have the great responsibility of echoing the message voters sent them in the midterms: respect women’s rights and protect our health care.

Margarida Jorge is the executive director of Health Care for America Now, the national grassroots coalition that ran a $ 60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect and promote the Affordable Care Act and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.

How to Survive a Divisive Election Cycle

It comes around every few years like clockwork, arriving like an uninvited houseguest that sets up shop and refuses to leave. Like it or not, the divisive election cycle is upon us once again, and the contentious and divisive political environment is worse now than ever before.
Partisan politics have been part of the American landscape for quite some time, but it seems this election cycle is like nothing we have ever seen. From married couples torn apart by their choice of candidates to ruined friendships both online and off, political differences have reached a breaking point, and many voters are feeling the pain. There has been a marked increase in people seeking professional counseling as a result of the current election, and if you are looking for ways to cope, you are not alone. Here are some practical tips to help you survive the current election cycle and come out whole no matter which candidate ends up on Capitol Hill.

Resist the Urge of Social Media

Social media, in particular, has become a partisan swamp this election cycle, and resisting its siren call is one of the best ways to cope. Avoiding political posts on Facebook and staying out of political discussions online can give you a refreshing break from the current election cycle.
Instead of focusing on politics and political discussions, delve into the things you really like to do. Whether it is going to the movies, reading a good book, or just relaxing, finding an alternative to politics will make your life better and more fulfilling.

Do Your Own Research

Determining what is true and false can be difficult even in the best of times, but in the heat of a contentious election cycle, the truth often gets lost in the shuffle. The fractured nature of news coverage and the Internet makes getting to the truth that much harder, but it is important to persevere.
“Seeking out independent news sources with a long track record of impartiality is the best way to sort out the facts and get the truth about what the candidates say and what is really true,” stated Walter Powell, NFL veteran, African American tech expert, and CEO of Politiscope.
If you find yourself bothered and offended by slights to your own candidate as well as the other guy (or girl), chances are you are on the right track.

Break the 24-Hour News Cycle

Being able to access news and information 24 hours a day is good in theory, but the reality is a lot less attractive. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the current news cycle and unduly worried about the outcome of the election, it is time to take a step back and break the 24-hour news cycle. You can be just as informed watching the evening news, and you will feel a lot better.
No matter how you feel about the current state of the mid-term elections or the quality of the candidates in contention, you can rest easy knowing that it will all soon be over. No matter who wins, life will go on, and the sun will rise the morning after election day.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Calls for Election Day to Become a National Holiday, Replacing Columbus Day

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the politician who soon will become the youngest woman to serve in Congress, proposed replacing Columbus Day with a national voting holiday on Election Day.

Ocasio-Cortez’ proposal was made in that raucous battleground for U.S. politics, Twitter. The suggestion began when she tweeted a question during the weekend: “How is Columbus Day a holiday but Election Day not?”

In short order, David Martosko, U.S. political editor for Britain’s Daily Mail, weighed in to accuse Ocasio-Cortez of “angling for more vacation days.” That tweet struck many as a not-so-subtle reference to the inaccurate yet longstanding stereotype of Hispanics as lazy. Martosko’s tweet was quickly ratioed, with more than three comments for every retweet as of Monday afternoon, and with most of those comments excoriating Martosko.

For her part, Ocasio-Cortez responded with the suggestion to swap out Columbus Day for an Election Day holiday.

Since she defeated a ten-term incumbent during a June primary race in New York’s 14th district, Ocasio-Cortez has become something of a lightning rod for far-right media, including a now-deleted tweet that seemed to obsess over her clothing choices.

Other politicians such as Bernie Sanders have called for making Election Day a holiday. Although voter turnout in 2018 was the highest for a mid-term election in a century, some feel the 49% turnout figure is still low given that many people don’t take time off for work to vote.

Others are opposed to the practice, arguing that, while a voting holiday might give many white-collar workers and students a day off, people working in restaurants, hotels, and retail stores will still need to work that day. In some states, early voting and mail-in ballots are alternatives for those who need to work on Election Day.

In recent decades, some people have advocated replacing Columbus Day with a different national holiday, such as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Stacey Abrams has ended her campaign in Georgia and will sue for “gross mismanagement” of the election

Stacey Abrams has ended her campaign in Georgia and will sue for “gross mismanagement” of the election

Stacey Abrams has ended her campaign in Georgia and will sue for “gross mismanagement” of the election

In devastating news, Stacey Abrams has ended her campaign for governor in Georgia against Republican Brian Kemp—which, if she’d won, would have made her the first Black woman ever to lead a U.S. state. The Democratic politician is also set to file a lawsuit against the state of Georgia for “gross mismanagement” of the election.

In her November 16th speech, Abrams said firmly that her decision to end her campaign was not a concession.

“Let’s be clear—this is not a speech of concession, because concession means to acknowledge an action is right, true, or proper. As a woman of conscience and faith, I cannot concede that,” she said. “But my assessment is the law currently allows no further viable remedy. Now, I can certainly bring a new case to keep this one contest alive, but I don’t want to hold public office if I need to scheme my way into the post. Because the title of governor isn’t nearly as important as our shared title—voters. And that is why we fight on.”

Referring to Kemp, she added, “Under the watch of the now-former secretary of state, democracy failed Georgia. Make no mistake, the former secretary of state was deliberate and intentional in his actions. I know that eight years of systemic disenfranchisement, disinvestment, and incompetence had its desired effect on the electoral process in Georgia.”

John Bazemore-Pool/Getty Images

Abrams’ speech comes on the heels of a contentious campaign against Kemp in the November 6th midterm elections; since then, Abrams’ team has fought hard to secure enough votes to force a December 4th runoff, but Kemp kept a narrow lead over Abrams.

Over 1,000 absentee votes were rejected during Georgia’s midterm elections due to minor administrative errors, such as mismatched addresses and birth dates, and even more voters had lost their right to cast a ballot earlier in the campaign because of a Kemp-era policy. Georgians had to contend with major voting difficulties due to broken machines, long lines, and untrained poll workers. Even Kemp, who oversaw the midterm elections and faced allegations of voter suppression, reportedly had issues voting as well.

Black Women Led the Way on Election Day—Now They’re Leading the Charge for Voting Rights

Black women voters turned out in unprecedented numbers on Election Day, delivering groundbreaking wins to a multitude of Black women candidates. Leticia James will be the first Black woman to serve as attorney general in New York; newcomers Lauren Underwood and Juliana Stratton from Illinois, Jahana Haynes from Connecticut and Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts will join the U.S. House of Representatives as the first Black women to represent their states in Congress, and Ilhan Omar will be the first Muslim refugee elected to the chamber.

The strength of their wins is the direct result of high turnout by Black women—and men—at the polls. Black women’s leadership and GOTV efforts led Black women candidates to victory, and the Black women we elected will lead the country on a new path toward equality and justice for all.

But we had to overcome monumental hurdles to get to these victories—with some voters still fighting today to ensure their ballots from Tuesday are counted.

Stacey Abrams’ campaign turned out a record number of voters—in spite of severe attacks on the voting rights of people of color, and particularly Black communities, in her state. (via Stacey Abrams on Facebook)

This election was as much about the attacks on voting rights as it was about voter turnout. White conservatives have been systematically dismantling voting rights and erecting giant barriers to voters of color—especially Black voters.

Gerrymandering, unfair voter ID laws and the illegal purging of people of color from the voting rolls was the norm in too many states. Voters waited in long lines across the country—as long as four-and-a-half hours. Students from Prairie A&M in Texas, a historically Black college, had to drive to other towns to cast ballots during early voting because county officials refused to set up a polling place in the campus town. In North Dakota, members of the Spirit Lake Tribe filed a federal complaint against the implementation of a voter ID law requiring a street address. Many voters live on tribal lands without residential addresses.

While we rallied to overcome many barriers, we also saw the negative results of voter suppression in races across the nation. Stacey Abrams battled in her race for Georgia governor against its then-Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who used the power of his post to purge thousands of voters from the voter rolls, hold 53,000 voter registrations hostage and throw out absentee ballots from a predominantly Black county. Even though Abrams turned out unprecedented numbers of voters, many showed up to polls and could not vote, and the outcome of that election is yet to be determined.

The lesson is clear: Conservative lawmakers will go to any length to stop voters of color from voting, and we cannot stop pushing back against oppressive laws that pose barriers to our right to be heard at the ballot box.

This Fall, In Our Own Voice launched a two-year initiative to educate Black women voters about reproductive justice issues throughout the year. Through the #IAMAVOTER campaign, we were able to raise the issues that must be addressed in our communities on a daily basis by our elected officials and engage with voters.

We’re keeping that initiative through 2019 to ensure that Black women voters continue to hold those we elected accountable to our issues—including demanding that they protect our right to vote.

We must continue to knock down the barriers and push for equal voting rights. We didn’t march and die fighting for our right to vote only to have that right denied us by a president who didn’t even win the popular vote. We must continue to reject the new Jim Crow era and the attempt by politicians to turn the clock backward. Voting rights must be accessible to all.

We must remember that these victories happened despite the impact of nearly two years of the Trump administration’s racist and sexist policies. We must fight not only to stop losing ground—we have win back full access to our fundamental right to vote. With this election behind us, we are determined to continue to fight. We will not rest until our country lives up to the constitutional promise of liberty and justice for all.

Black women are leading the way—and we invite you all to follow!
