Asian Markets Mostly Higher Ahead Of U.S. Midterm Elections

Asian stock markets are mostly higher on Tuesday following the mostly positive cues from Wall Street. Nevertheless, investors are cautious as they look ahead to the U.S. midterm elections to be held later in the day, which will decide control of both the House and Senate. Democrats are seen as having a much better chance to claim a majority in the House than in the Senate.

Millennials Could Make a Big Difference in the Midterm Elections. But Will They Vote?

One point appears to be clear: Millennials will be looking for game-changing U.S. political candidates as Election Day draws closer.

Fifty-five percent of millennials report they will definitely or probably vote in the 2018 midterm elections, according to a new NBC News/GenForward survey. The elections occur on Nov. 6. Some 19% of millennials indicate that they will definitely or probably not vote. Another 25% are unclear if they will vote or not.

A majority of millennials have regularly indicated they plan to vote for Democrats in the 2018 congressional elections within the last year. Roughly a quarter plan to vote for Republicans. Another quarter doesn’t plan to vote for either party, uncertain what they will do.

Survey findings showed that “the candidate quality that matters most to millennials’ vote in the upcoming midterms is someone who can bring about needed change, signifying that young people are still on the hunt for someone they feel can make a difference.”

Forty-two percent of millennials surveyed reported their midterm vote will be in opposition to President Donald Trump. Just 14% say their vote in this year’s midterm election will back Trump, while 24% contend Trump won’t affect their vote at all.

The survey of 1,910 adults ages 18-34 was conducted nationally from July 26 through Aug. 13 this year.

Intriguingly, millennials are not overly thrilled with either party. In the past year, the survey showed millennials perspective of the Democratic Party was split between favorable and unfavorable. During the same time, about 6 in 10 millennials have asserted unfavorable impressions of the Republican Party, with fewer than 3 in 10 disclosing favorable views.

The survey also suggested that “millennials are disillusioned about the midterm elections.”

On the numbers front, millennials could be a force in the election if a great number vote. Millennials are expected to soon top baby boomers in size demographically. Totaling 71 million in 2016, millennials in America are closing in on baby boomers (74 million) in population and expected to become the nation’s largest living adult generation in 2019, according to the Pew Research Center.

And while millennials might be more likely to vote for Democrats, a big uncertainty is how many of them will actually vote. Observers conclude that millennials over the years have not displayed high turnouts for midterm elections.

New $2.6 Million Campaign Encourages Black Voter Turnout in Midterm Elections

A newly-launched political group that includes several top black business leaders and entrepreneurs is doing its part to help ensure black voter turnout during the midterm elections on November 6.

The Black Economic Alliance PAC and Black Economic Alliance Fund just announced a $ 2.6 million campaign to mobilize black voters in 15 key races ahead of next month’s midterm elections.

The movement is geared to escalate black voter turnout in support of candidates advocating for sustainable policies that will improve and enhance economic outcomes for the nation’s black community.

Further, the investments will help engage and mobilize black voters by utilizing various tactics, including polling, radio, and digital advertising, door-to-door canvassing, SMS texting, and direct mail.

“For far too long, many of our nation’s elected officials have been crafting policies that contribute to the economic disenfranchisement of millions of black people across the country,” Gerald Adolph, board member of the Black Economic Alliance PAC, stated in a press release.

“By investing nearly $ 3 million in targeted gubernatorial, congressional and Senate races, we can help ensure that candidates rallying for policies that lead to better employment opportunities and wages for black Americans are victorious in November.”

Adolph added, “This midterm election is crucial for the economic well-being of many black people and their families. That’s why we’ve extensively surveyed the national landscape to identify candidates who can help improve economic opportunities for the black community. As the election draws closer and fields shift, we will continue to invest in candidates and races that can make the ultimate difference in the lives of black people.”

More details about the campaign and candidates the Black Economic Alliance PAC and Black Economic Alliance Fund will back in upcoming races can be found here.

Small Business Owners Ready to Hit Ballot Box Big Time in Midterm Elections

When it comes to the midterm elections in November, small business owners will be more registered to vote than the overall population.

That, at least, is among the findings of a new survey by Thumbtack, an online service for small businesses. The survey indicated 85% of small business owners surveyed report being registered to vote, versus 70% of all Americans signed up to vote.

Further, 93% of small business owners who are registered to vote say they “definitely” or “probably” will do so, while only 88% of registered voters nationwide say the same, a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll shows.

The survey showed 17.1% of small business owner respondents reported the No. 1 issue in determining their vote this November is the economy and taxes. Some 5.8% named healthcare as their top issue, making those the most important issues for nearly one-third of small business owners. There are roughly 30 million small businesses in the nation.

“Small business owners continue to tell us they want their representatives to focus on the issues that impact their businesses and their families like the economy and healthcare,” said Thumbtack Head of Public Policy, Kellyn Blossom stated in a press release.

“Small business owners are going to be a crucial constituency for every campaign this November. They care deeply about what affects their communities and plan to turn out in large numbers to vote.”

Thumbtack surveyed 980 small business owners from late August and early September nationally in hundreds of categories, including electricians, music teachers, wedding planners, and wellness professionals to name few. Entrepreneurs were asked about their voter registration status, plans to vote in the upcoming election, and the issues guiding their political preferences.

Additionally, Thumbtack and the Small Business Roundtable are partnering to make sure business owners’ voices will be heard this election.

The Small Business Roundtable is a membership-based group comprised of the Small Business Entrepreneurship Council, National Association of Women Business Owners, National Association for the Self Employed, U.S. Black Chambers Inc., National Small Business Association, and Asian / Pacific Islander Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship.
