Marvel's 'Eternals' Moves Ahead With Chloe Zhao Directing; Here's Everything We Know

Just five months ago, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said Eternals was "one of many, many, many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate." Now, the possibility has become a reality and Eternals is moving forward to the next level.

While not officially greenlight and set for production or a release date just yet, Eternals does have writers and a director in place, according to The…

Everything you need to know before scuba diving for the first time

If you’ve ever fancied yourself as the next best thing to Ariel from The Little Mermaid, you may have thought you’d like to try your hands (and fins) at scuba diving. And you can! You don’t have to live near the sea or go on holiday to scuba dive – although it would be a bonus,. You can still scuba dive in your local swimming pool (within reason. Don’t just turn up with your scuba gear and expect to be let in). So if you want to don your flippers, check out these 5 things you need to know about diving.

You don’t need to buy all of the equipment

You know what they say, ‘all the gear but no idea.’ Well, if you turn up to your first scuba diving session with all of the equipment you’ve seen online, you will be the laughing stock of the scuba school. Many people love to keep it simple when they go scuba diving and prefer their own mask, fins, and snorkel (because you can go scuba diving without the air tanks and wetsuits!). After you’ve tried the basics with your standard snorkel and dive a bit deeper, you will need air tanks, inflatable vests, and wetsuits; but these will be provided by the scuba school. Don’t go buying it all yourself.

You don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer

Diving isn’t limited to athletically toned Olympians or those that work out every day (because for starters, who even enjoys exercise?!) Although it is desirable that you can swim at least the length of a swimming pool and not be completely out of breath, there is no exact requirement. No matter your size, weight, or physique, you can all have a go at scuba diving. There are certain medical requirements that could affect your ability to scuba dive, so always check with your doctor before you try it out.

You get to see another world

Yep, the underworld. Not the creepy underworld we see in movies and horror stories – more like The Little Mermaid…under the sea. Most people try their hands at scuba diving because they are attracted to exploring below the surface of the ocean. Because we never see the underwater world too often, having the opportunity to explore the little nooks, crannies, colors, shapes, and animals of the sea is an opportunity you just can’t pass up.

If you want to dive on your own, you need be certified

If you try out scuba diving on holiday, with a diving school, and you absolutely hate it – this won’t affect you (but we doubt this will happen). However, if you find a new-found passion, and want to carry on the sport by yourself, you will need a certification. When you first start scuba diving, you will need to be properly trained as it can be dangerous if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. You will then have to take a test to ensure you have the knowledge and practical skills to do it yourself. Just like you need a license to drive on land, you need a license to drive – or dive – in the water.

Don’t hold your breath

When you’re scuba diving, it can often be a common reaction to hold your breath – which is completely understandable. However, this can be dangerous (as we all know what happens when you hold your breath too long). When you’re scuba diving, it’s important to keep your breathing as normal as possible to maintain your bodily functions while under water. Although it may seem strange and unnatural, you have to do it.

The Angels are heading to the big screen once again. Originally a TV series in the 1970s, Charlie's Angels was later adapted into a 2000 action comedy that continued the canon of the show, and that spawned one sequel three years later. In 2011, there was a TV series reboot on the small screen, but it was very short-lived. This Is Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Your First Home

When she turned 27, Adria Rebbecchi decided to buy a house. Like most first-time homebuyers, she had no idea what to expect. But in the months ahead, she’d get a whirlwind education.

“Looking at a ton of different houses was fun and allowed me to explore parts of my city that I had never seen before,” said Rebbecchi, a marketing coordinator who lives in Tampa. “The most stressful part — definitely — was gathering all the necessary documentation for the mortgage.”

Buying your first home is intimidating. It’s the biggest purchase of your life so far, and you get bombarded with strange new concepts like “escrow” and “pre-qualification” and “closing costs.”

Adding to the pressure, skyrocketing home prices are making it harder than ever for first-time homebuyers like you to save enough for that crucial down payment. That puts you at a disadvantage when you’re competing with older homeowners who’ve built up tens of thousands of dollars in equity.

Hey, you’re not alone. First-time buyers make up roughly a third of all homebuyers, according to the National Association of Realtors. We’ll walk you through it.

Are You Ready to Buy (or Should You Continue Renting)?

Before you start shopping, a few things to consider…

You’re better off renting if:

 • There’s a good chance you’ll move in a few years.
 • Your job situation is shaky.
 • The down payment to buy will take all your savings.
 • You hate yard work, housework and maintenance.

You’re better off buying if:

 • You expect your family to grow.
 • You want pets, and that makes renting difficult.
 • You have enough savings for a down payment, closing costs and moving expenses.
 • You want a place to call your own — something that appreciates in value over time.

Ready to buy your own place? You’ve got this. Educate yourself. If you do a little research and ask for advice, you can save yourself a ton of money and stress.

Here’s our step-by-step guide for first-time homebuyers:

1. Start Saving for Your Down Payment

The best time to start saving is now. Right now.

The good news is, as a first-time homebuyer, you won’t have to come up with a huge down payment of 20% of the home’s purchase price. Government loan programs for new buyers allow as little as 3% to 5% down.

But even a small down payment is a big chunk of change. For example, a “low” down payment of 5% on a typical $ 200,000 house is still a whopping $ 10,000. Start saving those pennies!

It’s best to stash your savings someplace where you’re not going to touch it. A quick and easy way to get started is with Stash, a popular microinvesting app.

Stash lets you start investing with as little as $ 5. You can set it up to automatically pull a certain amount of cash from your bank account every week or every month. It funnels your money into a set of simple investment portfolios reflecting your goals and interests.

Stash charges a $ 1 monthly fee for balances under $ 5,000. If you sign up through this link with the code PENNYH, you’ll get a $ 5 bonus — that’s like five months free.

2. Check Your Credit

Before starting your fabulous home-buying journey, check your credit score. The better your credit, the better your odds of getting a mortgage with favorable interest rates.

Clueless about your credit score? Credit Sesame is a free credit monitoring service that’ll keep track of it for you. It’ll offer you personalized tips and tools to manage your debt and raise your score. You can also look at your credit reports and dispute any errors that are hurting your credit score.

3. Talk to a Lender

We know, we know. You want to go house-hunting! Why aren’t we going house-hunting yet? That’s the fun part! My God, this is torture.

Patience, young Jedi. Now it’s time to reach out to a mortgage lender. Don’t skip this part.

Here’s an easy way to do it: Just talk to the bank you’re already doing business with. It’ll set you up with a loan officer. Or you could contact a major mortgage lender like Quicken Loans, Wells Fargo or Bank of America. They work with a lot of first-time buyers, so they’ll know how to talk to you.

You could also hire an independent mortgage broker to shop around and find the mortgage that works best for you. This will save you time and hassles. But you’ll have to pay your broker about 1% of your loan amount. (That happens later, when you officially close the deal.)

You have two reasons for talking to a mortgage lender: Get pre-approved for a loan, and check out options for first-time homebuyers.

Get Pre-Approved

You can get pre-qualified for a mortgage. That’s an estimate of how much a bank might be willing to lend you, based on your income and debts.

It’s better to go a step further and get a pre-approval letter. That’s when a lender goes over your finances in depth, then outlines in writing how much it’s willing to lend you.

This way you’ll know what your price range is, and you can narrow down your search. And when you find the house you want, you’ll be ready to make a serious offer.

Look at First-Time Homebuyer Programs

As a first-time homebuyer you may be eligible for various government loan programs. Ask your mortgage adviser about this. Here are some options:

 • FHA loans: The Federal Housing Administration insures these mortgages, so that protects your lender in case you default on the loan. These loans have smaller down payments and lower closing costs than conventional loans.

With a credit score of 580 or more, you can qualify for an FHA loan with a down payment of 3.5% of the home’s purchase price, according to the FHA. If your score is lower than that — between 500 and 579 — you’ll have to put 10% down.

 • USDA loans: The U.S. Department of Agriculture backs mortgages in this program, which focuses on homes in certain rural areas. No down payment is required. No minimum credit score is required, but it’s faster and easier if your score is at least 640, according to the independent Mortgage Research Center.
 • VA loans: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs guarantees parts of mortgages for active-duty military, veterans and surviving spouses. No down payment needed. The VA’s lenders typically require a credit score of at least 620, says Veterans United.
 • Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac: These government-sponsored enterprises offer mortgages to low- and moderate-income borrowers. They require as little as 3% to 5% down. You typically need a score of at least 620 for a loan from Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. (The main difference between the two is the kind of banks they work with — Fannie Mae works with big commercial banks, while Freddie Mac works with smaller banks.)

4. Figure out How Much House You Can Afford

Don’t just look at houses at the top of your price range. Look lower, too.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to have enough money for:

 • A down payment.
 • Closing costs, usually 2% to 5% of your loan amount.
 • A home inspection, which HUD advises will likely cost $ 300 to $ 500.
 • Monthly mortgage payments.
 • Maintenance.
 • Property taxes, which will be rolled into your mortgage payments.
 • Homeowners insurance.

(Your real estate agent typically gets paid by the home’s seller when the sale goes through.)

We’d recommend going with a fixed-rate mortgage instead of an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM). With an ARM, you might have lower monthly payments at first, but they’ll get more expensive later. A bank that sells you an adjustable-rate mortgage is betting that interest rates are going to rise and make your payments go up.

If you want the smallest mortgage payment possible each month, get a customary 30-year mortgage. But if you can afford higher mortgage payments, think hard about getting a 15- or 20-year mortgage instead. You can get a lower interest rate that way, and you’ll pay off your house a lot sooner.

Talk to your real estate agent about the likely cost of property taxes and home insurance in your area.

5. Get a Real Estate Agent

This is crucial. Get an agent you’re comfortable with. Think of your agent as your guide through this whole process.

Your real estate agent will help you find homes that fit your needs and your price range. They’ll tour these homes with you. When you find a home you like, they’ll help you make an offer, and they’ll negotiate on your behalf. They’ll even guide you through the paperwork blizzard that follows.

Your agent will calm you down if you feel like you’re going to puke.

There are approximately eleventy bajillion real estate agents in the U.S., so how are you supposed to choose one? Ask for recommendations from friends, relatives and co-workers. A whole lot of them own homes, after all.

6. Go House Hunting!

Finally, you get to the fun part! Woo-HOO!

Your real estate agent can find you plenty of homes for sale. Also, feel free to drive around your favorite neighborhoods, scanning the yards for “For Sale” signs.

There’s also this thing called the internet. Every year, sites like Zillow and Realtor.com are posting more and more information online about homes for sale. And first-time homebuyers are more likely to use the internet to find the home they’ll eventually purchase, according to the National Association of Realtors.

When you’re touring houses, keep your eyes open and ask a lot of questions: How old is the roof? What about the air conditioning system? Those are super expensive! Most American homes have shingle roofs that last 20 to 25 years and central AC units that last 15 to 20 years, according to most of the experts we’ve seen.

When first-time homebuyer Timothy Moore went house-hunting, he was wowed by homes with fresh paint and new laminate flooring. But his partner knew to look for what really indicated quality: solid construction, good insulation and windows, a newer or good-condition roof, and a new or well-maintained HVAC system.

If you look at a lot of houses, they tend to blend together in your mind. Snap photos as you tour homes. At each new location, take a photo of the house number so you’ll know which place was which later on.

Adria Rebbecchi, the Tampa marketing coordinator, found house-hunting to be exhausting: “After a while, it did get to be frustrating. I had a hard time remembering which houses I had already looked at, and why I did or didn’t like them.”

7. Make an Offer

You’ve found the house you want? Make an offer on it. Don’t dawdle.

Your real estate agent can help you figure out how much to offer. The home’s sellers will either accept your offer, take someone else’s offer, or get back to you with a counter-offer.

If you and the seller agree on a price, you’ll hand over what’s called an “earnest money deposit,” showing that you’re committed to buying the house. It’s typically 1% to 2% of the purchase price.

A title company will hold the money in reserve, explains Zillow, in what’s called an “escrow account” while the house is taken off the market and you prepare to buy it. The deposit will eventually go toward your down payment and closing costs.

The next important step will be the home inspection.

8. Be There for the Home Inspection

Hire a licensed home inspector. (Your real estate agent can hook you up.)

This trained professional will examine your dream home, looking for any defects. The most common problems they find are things like faulty wiring or plumbing, poor ventilation, clogged gutters, mildewy basements or missing roof shingles, according to the National Association of Realtors.

If the inspector finds serious defects that weren’t disclosed, you can take back your offer or renegotiate. Sometimes the seller will agree to make repairs.

Tagging along for the home inspection is highly educational — you get to learn about everything that’s wrong with your new house! (Spoiler alert: There’s always something wrong. It’s usually not a deal-killer.)

Pay attention, because this knowledge will be super useful once you actually buy the place. You should also get a written report, so you’ll have a permanent record that you can refer back to.

9. Compare Mortgage Rates

At this point, you’re still not locked into one mortgage lender. Even if you’ve been pre-approved for a mortgage, you can still switch lenders in search of a better deal.

Getting quotes from multiple lenders puts you in a better bargaining position, says the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If you prefer one lender, but a different lender offers you a better rate, show the first lender the lower quote, and ask for a match.

“Essentially, you can start a mini bidding war,” first-time homebuyer Lana Axelrod says about her experience.

10. Time for Closing Costs

Finally, it’s time to close the deal. This is when you officially sign up for the mortgage, and the ownership of the property is transferred to you.

Closing mostly involves going through a thick stack of paperwork and signing your name over and over and over again. Professionals will walk you through the process. Your real estate agent will be there and probably a loan officer from whichever bank is giving you a mortgage. If you hired a mortgage broker, they’ll be there too.

No lie: Getting ready for closing is a lot of work.

Before her closing, Rebbecchi put in a lot of time gathering all the documentation she needed: “I have moved a LOT in the past few years and had a variety of jobs — so providing all my income tax returns, proof of employment and justifying previous addresses was exhausting.”

As a rule of thumb, closing costs run from 2% to 5% of your loan amount. This pays for things like having a property appraiser assess the value of the home, as Realtor.com explains, and having a title company do a title search to make sure nobody else has a claim on the property.

(You don’t have to find these people. Your lender will choose the appraiser. Your real estate agent will hook you up with a title company.)

Alternatively, you can negotiate with the seller to cover all or part of your closing costs. One common method is to have your closing costs added to the home’s purchase price, and ask the seller to pay them. That way, the seller nets the same amount of money, but your closing costs get included in your mortgage. Talk to your real estate agent about it.

11. Shop Around for Homeowners Insurance

Now that you own a home, you’ll likely need to insure it.

It’s mandatory if you have a mortgage — when you borrow money from a bank to buy a house, it’ll require you to insure that asset. In fact, your insurance premiums will be included in your monthly mortgage payments.

Homeowners insurance covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home if it gets damaged by fire or the kind of natural disaster insurers call “acts of God” — earthquakes, lightning, etc. It typically doesn’t cover damage from flooding or hurricane winds, so you may need to purchase separate insurance policies for those, depending on where you live.

To find affordable insurance, shop around.

Start by getting a free quote. We recommend the online insurance company Lemonade, where homeowners insurance starts at $ 25 a month. Instead of profiting extra when it doesn’t have to pay out claims, the company keeps a set 20% of your premium for itself, and 80% goes into a pool for paying claims and charity.

Lemonade offers homeowners insurance in New York, California, Texas, Illinois, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Arizona, Rhode Island, Georgia and the District of Columbia, and it’s expanding to other states.

Private Mortgage Insurance

If your down payment was less than 20% of your home’s value, you’ll be charged an additional monthly fee: private mortgage insurance (PMI). It protects the lender if you stop making payments.

Once you’ve made enough mortgage payments to reach 20% equity in your home, you can cancel your PMI. You might have to keep after your mortgage lender to actually stop charging you for PMI.

12. Home Sweet Home

After it’s all said and done, bask in the glory of home ownership.

Follow the example of Rebbecchi, who put a lot of work, strategy and shoe leather into finding just the right house. Even though home ownership has been a bit more work than she bargained for, she’s still glad she made the move.

“I love my house,” she said. “It’s small and quaint and has a great vibe.”

Mike Brassfield (mike@thepennyhoarder.com) is a senior writer at The Penny Hoarder. He has bought two houses in his life, and he hopes that’ll be it.

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

Hannah Shergold: ‘Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn, but everything happens for a reason’

Continuing our Women Who Win series is Hannah Shergold, an award-winning artist and former Lynx helicopter commander in the British Army

Hannah Shergold
Copyright Andy Barnham

Some people struggle to find the one thing in which they excel – Hannah Shergold is in no danger of that.

Following a degree in pre-clinical Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge University, she became an internationally-exhibited bronze sculptor. Three years later, after what she calls a ‘whirlwind of an experience’, Shergold decided that she needed a new challenge, and joined the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.

During her tours as a Lynx helicopter commander, Hannah combined her passions, now working with the WWF as well as recently being selected as the only Wild Card artist for the 2019 Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year competition.

Our Women Who Win interview series celebrates strong and inspirational female trailblazers, shaping the future for us all, and Hannah Shergold and her refusal to let anyone or anything stand in her way is that in a nutshell.

We sat down with Hannah to talk about tours of duty, her Sandhurst experience and the words that she lives by.

What inspired you to join the army?

‘My father has been in the army, and his best memories and friends and stories are from that time. I liked the idea that you form such strong relationships with people when you’re going through the same experience. My cousin’s boyfriend at the time was at Sandhurst then, and he’d tell me heaps of stories: the things that most people would say, “Oh my god that sounds horrendous!”, I thought, “That’s awesome!”’

How tough was Sandhurst?

‘There were hundreds of moments at Sandhurst when I thought, “What am I doing?” I remember being on guard in the middle of a night in the woods and it was pouring with rain. I was sat in a puddle, starving hungry and couldn’t fall asleep, otherwise we would get punished. I thought, “One day, I’m going to find it really funny how miserable I am at this moment, but definitely not right now.”’

What was it like living and training in such a heavily male environment?

‘The army is full of the most awesome people, and the majority of them are really, genuinely good, but as in any organisation, you come across some people that really don’t think that women should be in the army. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t encounter any prejudice – I didn’t really notice it at first and found it much easier to brush off earlier in my career. I suppose in hindsight I was in survival mode, and also I was so busy I didn’t have time to sit back and think about it.’

Why did you choose to be a helicopter pilot?

‘The short answer is because helicopters looked really cool. My piloting course, which was 18 months long, was the toughest thing I’ve ever done: if things start going badly, you can go from being absolutely fine to being chucked off the course in less than a week. I’m very self-deprecating and would be quite honest about it, and sometimes I found with the guys they would always say that their flights were fine, so I got into my head that I was the only one that was struggling. But I only failed one flight in the entire time I was training: my last one!’

How did you get your start in the art world?

‘My secondary school had the most fantastic art department, with a wonderful old building that looked like a proper old-fashioned artist’s studio. We got to use oil paint and do sculpture: a friend of a friend tried to buy some A-level pieces that I’d made from clay. In 2006, after I’d finished university, I booked myself a stand at Bleinheim Horse Trials to sell statues cast out of bronze – when I booked it I didn’t actually have any pieces to show… I went to Dubai to sell my pieces for three summers, but the credit crunch hit in the autumn of 2008 and luxury products are the first thing to go.’

Copyright Andy Barnham

How did you balance art and the army?

‘I was in Kenya for six months on medical duties, which means a lot of sitting around, waiting for something to go wrong. Some people read, some people played on the Playstation, and I drew. I did pen and ink sketches of life out there; I just found it so beautiful out there.’

What’s your mantra?

‘Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. I’m a massive believer in things happening for a reason. If things are genuinely disappointing or go wrong, my fall back is, “Well that happened because something else amazing is going to occur as a result of not getting it.” Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start something new!’

How should women ask for more?

‘Have proof that you deserve something. You shouldn’t necessarily be expected to cite that proof, but if someone has the audacity to question why you deserve something, you can back it up quickly with the reasons.’

First Trailer for ‘Captive State’ Arrives; Here’s Everything We Know

We’ve seen many movies about alien invasions, but not what happens in the ensuing years following an attack. We don’t get a lot of sequels from this sci-fi sub-genre because that tends to be overkill. But if the massive success of District 9 a decade ago taught us anything, it's that there is room for movies that skip past the actual invasion and show us life alongside the aliens post-arrival.

Captive State promises to be this kind of alternative entertainment, blending…

‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’: Everything We Know About the New Kaiju

Ever since the spectacular Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer dropped at San Diego Comic-Con, fans have been excited about the return of the giant lizard … and some new colossal creatures.

Showcasing the King of the Monsters and three of the most popular kaiju from the Godzilla Monsterverse – the upcoming film is a monster movie fan’s dream come true. Godzilla is joined on-screen by Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. In the film, they are referred to as titans, the same name given to the Greek deities that preceded the Olympians. Here’s everything we know about them.

Godzilla

Godzilla King of the Monsters Godzilla
The King of the Monsters, himself.

Godzilla is easily the most well known and popular kaiju in existence. Originally created as a metaphor for the dangers of nuclear weapons, Godzilla has since become an international icon and the star of more than thirty films. Although his first appearance on screen was in 1954, his first Western feature aired in 1998 to negative reviews. While the 2014 Godzilla film — the precursor to King of the Monsters — received mixed reviews at best, the final fifteen minutes of that film are some of the best of any monster movie ever made.

Godzilla generally uses a handful of extremely powerful attacks and abilities when attacking cities or other monsters in his films. His atomic breath is a stream of blue energy that burns hotter than fire and devastates nearly anything it touches. Likewise, his nuclear pulse releases most of the radiation stored within his body in a short range explosion that can kill anything near him. While this series does have a more grounded and realistic tone than most other kaiju movies, hopefully, we get a scene of Godzilla flying through the air in all his glory.

Rodan

Godzilla King of the Monsters Rodan
The menace of the skies.

Rodan is basically a giant pterosaur. Which is fine as regular pterosaur are pretty cool, and colossal radioactive ones are even better. First appearing in the 1956 film of the same name, there are two Rodans that are mates and may have served as the inspiration for the M.U.T.O. in the 2014 film. However, as it seems like Rodan escapes from a volcano in the trailer, many speculate that he may appear in his Fire Rodan form.

Rodan doesn’t really have any special powers. Sometimes he has a breath attack that allows him to shoot compressed air from his mouth to destroy cities and stun his foes and other times he breathes fire, but there’s no guarantee that these techniques will appear in this approaching film. Usually, he just uses his sharp talons, beak, and strong winds from his beating wings in battle. While Rodan is likely to be more of a side character in this film, it’ll still be fun to watch Godzilla battle an aerial enemy and for Mothra to have a flying foe to fight.

Mothra

Godzilla King of the Monsters Mothra
A fan-favorite ally.

The first female monster in the Godzilla series and the titular character in the 1961 film Mothra, this kaiju is usually a friend to Godzilla and a protector of mankind. Mothra usually makes her initial appearance in movies in her larval state. In this underdeveloped form, she has a tendency unintentionally destroy parts of a city in pursuit of a place to build her cocoon, while also coming to understand humanity’s compassion and kindness.

Mothra’s most notable abilities in battle involve her shooting silk threads to trap opponents and energy beams from her antennae. She can also release scales from her wings to create a suffocating cloud around her enemies, at the cost of losing her ability to fly for some time. She also has some psychic abilities and can express her intentions to protect humanity through a medium of her choosing. This divine creature is sure to dominate her foes and maybe even become a regularly appearing member of the growing Monsterverse.

King Ghidorah

Godzilla King of the Monsters King Ghidorah
The false king.

As a massive three-headed, two-tailed, winged dragon, King Ghidorah is easily the coolest monster in the Godzilla films. First appearing in the 1964 film Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Ghidorah usually has origins different from the rest of the kaiju in a film. Sometimes he’s from space, other times the future, but this time it looks like he’s just a cataclysmic force trapped within a melting glacier. Hopefully, this time around we find out what exactly makes him a king; as this title doesn’t seem to carry any royal status in most of his appearances.

King Ghidorah has several energy based attacks on top of his nearly insurmountable size, strength, and durability. In previous appearances, Ghidorah could fire gravity beams from any of his mouths, augment his attacks with lighting, and encase himself within a meteorite for space travel. His more over-the top-abilities and origins probably won’t appear in this more grounded film, but a big budget CGI clash between him and Godzilla could be fantastic. Since the moment his wings unfurled in the trailer, it became clear that Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a must watch for any fan of monster movies.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters opens May 31, 2019.

Here’s everything you need to know about menstrual migraines

From why you’re getting them to how to get rid of them…

sleep calculator

Few women look forward to their periods for the simple fact that they are mentally and physically enduring.

Mood swings, food cravings, bloating, abdominal cramps, breast sensitivity, nausea, back pain and of course bleeding are common symptoms that accompany a monthly visit from ‘Aunt Flo’.

But there are also some lesser known symptoms that we too often dismiss as coincidental.

The main culprit? Menstrual migraines.

‘I’m dehydrated,’ we tell ourselves, or ‘I’ve been staring at my laptop screen all day’.

But while those are two valid headache-inducers, could your migraine actually have something to do with your period?

Well, unfortunately for women everywhere, yes, with menstrual migraines actually affecting over 50% of us.

Here’s everything you need to know…

sleep trackers

What are menstrual migraines?

Menstrual migraines are a condition where women get intense and persistent headaches during or before their periods. While women frequently assume that menstruation is simply a trigger for a migraine, in the case of menstrual migraines, they are the sole cause.

What causes menstrual migraines?

They are mainly caused by the natural drop in the levels of oestrogen and the release of prostaglandin (a type of hormone) that occurs right before a period. This means that most menstrual migraines will occur in the two day run-up and the first three days of menstruation.

When do menstrual migraines generally occur?

Menstrual migraines usually occur before or during menstruation, with very few women suffering from menstrual migraines in a period’s aftermath. Migraines and headache pains can also occur during ovulation when this time the oestrogen and other hormones are at a high.

How to get to sleep

How can I get rid of menstrual migraines?

Menstrual migraines are treated the same as regular migraines, with recommended remedies including applying ice or a cold cloth to the painful area, relaxation exercises, pain killers and in some cases, acupuncture.

How can I prevent menstrual migraines?

Preventing or at least reducing the effect of headaches on your period is totally possible, with the preventative measures being the same for normal migraines, but anything that balances hormones is highly recommended.

Common treatments include a change in diet, eliminating simple carbohydrates, refined sugars and processed foods from your eating pattern. Sleep, exercise and hydration are also considered essential for balancing hormones and promoting a healthy metabolism.

Magnesium supplements have also been dubbed a preventative measure, but if the symptoms persist and aren’t reduced by trying the following, it might be best to contact your GP for help dealing with more acute pain.

Should I be worried about menstrual migraines?

There shouldn’t be any cause for concern, but should you be worried that it could be a symptom of something more severe, it might be worth contacting your GP.

Abrams' company, best known lately for surprise deliveries of Cloverfield movies, and we can easily see why that is. Already, we're getting clear glimpses of gory Nazi zombies here.

The trailer starts off like it's a normal World War II drama, albeit the kind with lots of action…

Everything You Need to Know About ‘Fortnite’ Season 5

It seems like only yesterday that we were mourning the loss of Dusty Depot and celebrating the new superheroes who came to town, but already Season 4 in Fortnite is over and Season 5 is bearing down upon us at a rapid pace.

For weeks we have seen hints of what is to come, the crack in the sky the rocket created seems to have opened some kind of time rift and that has brought in some strange items while removing others. But what does it all mean we hear you ask, well we still don’t know all the details of what Season 5 will bring, but we have a pretty good idea.

When Can I Play Fortnite Season 5?

Season 5 is available right now and servers seem to be fairly stable, however this could change when more people head home at the end of the day, so don’t be surprised if there are a few tech issues at some point today.

The season will run until September 25th, giving you plenty of time to earn those sweet new skins.

Fortnite Season 5 Battle Pass Redline Drift Huntress skins cosmetics
The new Redline, Drift, and Huntress costmetics.

How Much is the Season 5 Battle Pass?

As always you will still be able to enjoy the classic Fortnite experience without having to pay a penny, and you will also get to experience more than a few changes coming with Season 5, such as the map changes.

However to get the full seasonal experience you will need to drop some cash on the Battle Pass. Once again the Battle Pass will set you back 950 V-Bucks, which is around around £8 or $ 10USD in real money.

Or you can get the Battle Pass and instantly unlock the first 25 tiers for 2800 V-Bucks.

What does the Fortnite Battle Pass give me?

Fortnite‘s Season 5 Battle Pass is pretty similar to the previous ones we have seen. They offer access to exclusive cosmetics and skins, that are often only available to battle pass owners. Some will be unlocked as soon as you buy the pass, others will have to be earned through completing challenges and quests tied to the Battle Pass. There’s also a ton of XP boosts and V-Bucks to be earned by unlocking the 100 tiers.

As soon as you purchase the Battle Pass you will get the Drift and Huntress skins. The latter is a viking shield maiden, while initially the former just looks like a fairly standard guy. However he has alternate styles that can be unlocked which make him a lot cooler.

Fortnite Season 5 Battle Pass Sledgehammer Rook Sun Strider skins cosmetics
The new Sledgehammer, Rook, and Sun Strider cosmetics.

As you progress through the tiers you’ll unlock other cosmetics such as Redline, a female biker, Sun Strider, a lifeguard skin, Sledgehammer, which bears a striking resemblance to Blackbeard from Rainbow Six Siege, and Rook, which seems to be some kind of secret service agent style skin.

Finally if you hit tier 100 you will get your hands on Ragnarok, an upgradeable skin that really is the best of this season so far. It will take a lot to earn this, or you can just buy tires with V-Bucks if you have a load of spare cash, but the reward is pretty sweet.

Finally you’ll also have access to the weekly challenges. This time three of them will be available to those without Battle Passes, while another four will be Battle Pass exclusive.

What is Season 5’s theme?

Unlike Season 4 where everything was clearly related to superheroes in some way, Season 5 seems a little more disjointed. In fairness, this makes sense with the Worlds Collide theme.

Many of the skins are based around historical times, whereas a lot of other cosmetics seem to be based around the beach, perhaps because of the new desert biome on the map. Seeing Vikings next to a lifeguard with an inflatable unicorn back bling certainly wasn’t what we were expecting, but we are not complaining!

Having a general theme such as Worlds Collide means that Epic can do literally anything and it would make sense here, so expect the rest of the season to throw up a lot of surprises and things we could never even imagine.

What changes has Season 5 Brought With it?

A new season means a big old patch, and with it comes a lot of gameplay changes. The big new addition is the All-Terrain Kart, a four-person vehicle that can transport your entire squad around the map. It functions just like the two-person cart, but is just a little bigger and its roof acts as a bounce pad, which is sure to lead to some amazing stunts once people learn how to use it.

The map has also seen some pretty big changes. A new desert biome has been added to the south east corner of the map, destroying the Moisty Mire. This area has been totally overhauled, with some massive hills and mountains added and even some dinosaurs to scare the living daylight out of you when you round a corner to see one.

Fortnite Season 5 map Paradise Palms
Let's go to Paradise Palms and see some dinosaurs.

This has also resulted in the prison in this corner of the map disappearing, being replaced with a new area called Paradise Palms, which certainly seems to be more interesting than the prison ever was. Elsewhere, Anarchy Acres has also been replaced — this time with a golf course known as Lazy Links. Oh, and Dusty Divot is slowly returning to its former glory as even more trees have sprouted in the crater.

A few smaller changes have tweaked how shotguns work, meaning you can’t fire another shotgun for a short while after firing your original one. Pellet hits are now shown in the reticle and spread is now consistent and not random, which should reduce those infuriating moments where you aim a pump directly at someones head only for every pellet to miss.

The circle has also been tweaked in the later stages to be slightly more random. The Switch version has been given motion controls and the mobile sound indicator is now available on all platforms, but your game sounds will be muted if you use it. Of course there is also a whole host of bug fixes and smaller tweaks that you probably won’t even notice for quite a while.

Fortnite Shotguns
Get ready to learn static spread patterns…

This is just the beginning. With 10 weeks of Fortnite Season 5 content coming our way you can be sure that there will be even more new additions. Expect new cosmetics, challenges, map tweaks and most likely some massive, game-wide events such as the rocket launch we saw just a few weeks back.

These rifts that have opened up could literally result in anything from any time coming into the world of Fortnite, and with the team at Epic Games already showing off how crazy some of their ideas are you can only expect things to get strangers as the season progresses.

Slideshow: Everything You Missed at the American Black Film Festival 2018 Including Future, Kofi, and Coogler

If you were seeking to break into the film industry or you love black movies and television shows, the only place to be on this planet was the 22nd Annual Black Film Festival. Held in Miami, the event was sold out—and for good reason.

ABFF Ventures CEO Jeff Friday created the film festival more than two decades ago as the premier professional development and networking platform for African American filmmakers, artists, and industry influencers. This year, filmmakers, producers, and actors sought to elevate themselves within the industry by gaining essential training through a series of master classes taught by seasoned pros, which included “Becoming A Showrunner;” “Film Financing;” and “Nailing Your Audition.” Others gained the inside track through “Business of Entertainment” seminars sessions that demystified film distribution deals; evaluated television writers’ rooms; and shared how Netflix Original Films seeks to diversify talent in front of and behind the camera, among other topics.

Attendees also gained access to premier entertainment and interviews. For instance, HBO, which has been an ABFF partner for 21 years, sponsored the side-splitting Comedy Wings Competition as well as diverse, powerful slate of indies featured as part of its short film competition. Moreover, filmmakers and film lovers alike packed Miami’s New World Center to view an exclusive interview with ABFF alum and filmmaker of the moment: Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z Continue to Surprise on Joint Album Everything Is Love

Leave it to Beyoncé and Jay-Z to redefine what “pulling a Beyoncé” can be. Last Saturday, the pair headlined London Stadium as part of their joint On the Run II Tour, and at the end of their career-spanning set a message flashed on the screens: “ALBUM OUT NOW.” And there it was, on the home screen of the streaming platform Tidal (in which Jay-Z and Beyoncé have a controlling stake): Everything Is Love, credited to The Carters, an exquisitely produced happy ending to the cheating-heart narrative that unspooled on Beyoncé’s gravity-defying 2016 album Lemonade and Jay-Z’s terse yet personal 2017 release 4:44.

Rumors that this power couple would someday release a joint album have long been grist for pop’s mill, with Jay telling The New York Times last year that he and his wife had been using art “almost like a therapy session.” Everything was finished just a few hours before its splashy release, although its meticulous craft suggests otherwise. (“[Beyoncé and Jay-Z] don’t have rules,” producer Andre Lyon, who worked on the album as part of the production duo Cool & Dre, told Rolling Stone. “No one can get away with the things they do—and when I say get away with, I mean pull off.”) The album recalls other blockbuster duets in R&B and hip-hop—particularly Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s besotted soul sides, as well as Method Man and Mary J. Blige’s hip-hop-minded update of that pair’s 1968 smash “You’re All I Need to Get By”—as it plays with public perceptions of the duo’s relationship. Yet it incorporates too many of-the-moment elements to feel anything but timely: There are ad-libs from the Atlanta rap upstarts Migos, beats that take cues from the minimalist hip-hop subgenre trap, lyrical rebukes to the NFL and the Grammys, and cryptic references to other boldfaced names.

Everything opens with “Summer,” a lush ballad that sounds tailor-made for song-of-the-summer status. It also sets the thematic, if not musical, tone for the rest of the album: Beyoncé and Jay have weathered the storms of previous years and are ready to get back to the drunk-in-love business of beachside fun, shared plans, and knocking the rest of the world on their heels with their individual and combined success.

Over the course of Everything’s nine songs, the duo acknowledge bumps—subpoena-brandishing investigators, streaming services who don’t share the wealth, shady friends—while remaining resilient and focused, both on each other and on their art. Beyoncé’s swagger-filled rapping is as dead-serious as it is delightful: Her half-sung, half-rapped hook on “713” flaunts her mighty pipes and streetwise skills while throwing in some vocal processing that echoes the ’90s G-funk era; her demands for “respeck on my check” on “Apes–t” reframe the wage-gap issue in a radio-ready way; and her admonition of Spotify on the flinty, Pharrell-assisted “Nice” ends with a quote from the 1998 cult flick Half-Baked that’s as unprintable as it is cheer-inducing. Jay’s boasts are also in ample supply as he shouts out sellout crowds and big-ticket brands, although in a continuation of the openness he exhibited on 4:44, he pulls back the curtain on the couple’s origin story on “713” while also noting that life for black men in America is only made easier by black women.

Everything Is Love closes with “Black Effect” and “Lovehappy,” both of which return to the string-laden classic-soul sonics of the album’s opeer. The former examines America’s complex racial politics before making a simple declaration: “The Chitlin’ Circuit is stopped/ Now we in stadiums,” Jay declares, calling back to the path black musicians had to take during the era of racial segregation while flicking at how he and his wife have reached music’s highest echelons not just in their home country, but around the world. “Lovehappy,” a gorgeously plush ballad with sparkling synths and trilling strings, ends things on a hopeful note, the couples’ back-and-forth banter sounding like it was taken from the therapy sessions Jay mentioned (“Love is deeper than your pain and I believe you can change,” Beyoncé growls at one point) before bubbling over into a sighing “happy in love.”

Nearly two decades after their first meeting (the encounter Jay describes in “713” happened in 2000), Beyoncé and Jay-Z have ascended to celebrity’s highest heights by playing it close to the vest. They’re the masters of indulging the gossip-industrial complex’s hunger for “the real story” while also holding on tight to whatever the actual story might be. Everything Is Love’s melding of the personal and the imperial, the old-school and the next-wave, and the soulful and the stubborn give away the real story: Years later, The Carters still inspire each other to push harder and aim higher as they salute their love of each other, and of their art.

If you don’t know, and you should, Nas and Jay had a huge feud going in the late ’90s and early 2000s. They went at each other in songs and interviews for years before burying the whole thing in 2005.

They’ve been friends ever since, and we’re told Nas is more interested in “black excellence” these days … rather than drama.

That’s a relief. We can’t handle any more rap feuds at this moment.

Here’s everything AT&T now owns, apart from your soul

AT&T Time Warner merger

Earlier this week, a judge decided the fate of the AT&T Time Warner deal, and the result was a big thumbs-up in the general direction of capitalism. The $ 85 billion deal has closed, Time Warner has officially been assimilated into AT&T (and renamed WarnerMedia), and there’s almost zero chance that anything will stop it now.

With the closing of the deal, AT&T is now far more than just a telecoms company. It owns dozens of brands, as well as the rights to some of the most popular shows on TV. It has dozens of cable channels, and if the worst fears about programming disputes play out, AT&T could black those channels out from your pay TV provider during a dispute. In no particular order, here’s some of the big brands AT&T now owns.

‘He Had Everything.’ Anthony Bourdain’s Mother Says She Never Thought He Would Commit Suicide

Anthony Bourdain’s mother has expressed shock and sadness over the death of her son in an interview with the New York Times.

“He is absolutely the last person in the world I would have ever dreamed would do something like this,” Gladys Bourdain, who was an editor at the Times for years, told the newspaper.

Bourdain, the renowned chef and author whose storytelling and traveling influenced others and embraced different cultures, died this week in an apparent suicide. He was 61 years old.

“He had everything,” his mother told the Times. “Success beyond his wildest dreams. Money beyond his wildest dreams.”

Gladys Bourdain told the Times that Eric Ripert, a French chef and close friend of her son’s, told her that Bourdain “had been in a dark mood these past couple of days.”

Bourdain’s death shocked and saddened the world this week as fans and friends of his expressed the impact he had on their lives and the influential role he had in the restaurant industry. Restaurant owners and chefs who he visited in his variety of TV shows point to him as a reason for their growing success, and fans took to social media to express how he used his platform to convey empathy and understanding.

Bourdain’s suicide followed that of Kate Spade, an influential fashion designer who had died in an apparent suicide at age 55, and came at a time when the rates of suicide were on the rise across the U.S. Mental health professionals advised people to reach out and support friends or loved ones who may be struggling, and learn to identify warning signs like depression or changes in behavior, among other behaviors.

The deaths of two influential figures in their respective fields have also provoked conversations about how successful people are not immune depression, mental health issues or suicide. TIME’s Belinda Luscombe detailed this in a piece, where she examined the deaths of Bourdain and Kate Spade, the influential fashion designer who had died by an apparent suicide days earlier. “Many lives are not as they appear. Happiness is not the end result of a sum of accomplishments,” Luscombe writes. “The person whose wealth/wardrobe/job/talent you wish you had has his or her own struggles, and they could at least equal our own.”

If you or someone you know may be contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Everything Coming to Netflix in June 2018

Summer is finally here, but June gloom may have you spending more time inside than in the sun. But there’s a silver lining — plenty of time to binge the latest Netflix releases.

A slew of great film and television series will be heading to the streaming service next month, including Netflix originals like GLOW Season 2 and the Sense8 Series Finale. The former was a huge hit for the platform last year, so anticipation is high for the followup. And Sense8‘s cult fan following was so upset over the series’ cancellation that Netflix produced a giant finale episode to bring closure to the story.

Luke Skywalker-Last Jedi
Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in 'The Last Jedi'

The streaming service is also bringing us Star Wars: The Last Jedi only six months after it first arrived in theaters. The movie was highly polarizing for fans of the space franchise, so watch it when it hits Netflix on June 26 to decide which side of the debate you fall on when it comes to Luke Skywalker’s fate.

When God closes a door, he opens a window. Similarly, when Netflix gets rid of a great Marvel movie, it starts offering another one in its place. While June will see the loss of Captain America: Civil War on the streaming service, it will gain 2017’s Thor: RagnarokWhile the film includes all of our favorite Asgardians, including Thor and Loki teaming up to defeat their sister Hela (Cate Blanchett), it also provides a lot of laughs as arguably the funniest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: Ragnarok comes to Netflix on June 5.

The Fab 5 in 'Queer Eye'
The Fab 5 in 'Queer Eye'

When Netflix decided to reboot Queer Eye for the Straight Guy earlier this year, no one expected it to be such a huge hit. But people were instantly obsessed with the new Fab Five, so fans were flipping to find out that they don’t have to wait an entire year for Season 2. Just four months after Queer Eye debuted on the streaming service, we’re getting the second round of tearjerking makeovers and life-changing lessons from Jonathan, Antoni, Karamo, Tan, and Bobby. If it’s anything like Season 1, you’ll definitely want to tune in, but have tissues nearby! For every moment of laughter the boys bring, there are just as many heartwarming and emotional moments that will give you all the feels. Queer Eye returns to Netflix on June 15.

MOVIE APP UPDATE:

Everything you need to set up a nursing station before your baby comes

by

Kelly Wilbanks

posted in Products

I was four days postpartum and felt abandoned. Yes, “abandoned.” At least that’s how my hormone-induced emotional low left me feeling as I sat in the middle of my bed, a mere 15 feet from my showering husband and overly helpful mother-in-law in the kitchen. I felt alone.

I sat precariously on a hemorrhoid pillow, holding my barely sleeping infant, and felt my blood sugar crashing. I didn’t want to yell to my family in fear of waking my baby, but I couldn’t reach my water. I needed food like a starving captive and I felt trapped. I was in pain and moving an inch sent shockwaves through my throbbing lady parts. The tears fell fast and furious as I sat helpless on a donut pillow until my mother-in-law found me.

That was six years and three children ago. I’ve learned some things since then that helped me immensely with babies number two and three. Having a comfortable nursing station set up with everything you need within reach is essential.

Nursing station essentials

1. A comfortable chair: Have a designated nursing chair that fits your body size and type. The most comfortable chair in our house is my husband’s rocking recliner. The only problem is it’s built for a 6′ 3″ man and not someone a foot shorter than that. I liked being able to recline in his chair, but I don’t like that my feet don’t touch the floor.

Given that you’ll be using this chair daily it’s worth spending a little money finding something that fits you. You’ll appreciate being able to stand easily when you are stiff and sore after laboring. You’ll also want to be able to rock and snag a nap with your sleeping baby at times. I like that this one from Angel Line is wide and has an easy-pull lever on the side. (Amazon, $ 299.37)

angel-line-recliner

2. Support pillows: Everyone is aware of the Boppy pillow and I’ve loved mine. It was great not only for nursing, but later on for supporting my daughter when we did tummy time (when also I took a million pictures of her). It was also helpful when my older children were holding their new baby sister.

I’ve tried the My Brest Friend pillow and the Boppy. I didn’t like having to snap the Brest Friend pillow around my waist. I mistakenly thought that feature meant I could carry my daughter around with me, but it explicitly states on the packaging not to do that. So, for me the Boppy has remained a nursing station staple. (Amazon, $ 39.99)boppy-forest-print

3. Baby blankets: I gave burp rags a chance, but found I just reached for the closest thing available — often a baby blanket, and sometimes even the one my child is in. They do the job. I love the Aden + Anais brand because they’re breathable, and great for swaddling. They come in beautiful prints too. (Amazon, $ 34.95) aden+anias-blanket

4. Shower caddy: Okay, this may sound a bit weird, but I like their size, shape, and portability. You could use a diaper bag, a cleaning caddy from the Dollar Store or even just a basket to keep your nursing supplies together. But whatever you use, keep it stocked with these items: water bottle, wipes, granola bars (or other easily eaten nonperishable items), binkies, nipple pads, nipple cream (coconut oil works great), and nipple shields, if you need them. The fact that it’s portable makes it easy to take to a second location, like the nursery you spent so much time perfecting.

I liked this one from mDesign because it doesn’t look like your typical shower caddy. It has firm walls, which I prefer to a bag or something that collapses when it’s less full. You’ll want to be able to easily see what you have in there. I like just having one caddy to restock. It’s easier to keep track of what you need. This one looks like it can hold all your essentials, and depending on what you need, maybe some supplies for your baby too. (Amazon, $ 15.99)

nursing-station-caddy-storage

5. A charging station: You’ll want your phone near you. Even if it’s just to capture a picture of your baby in various stages of sleep. Or maybe you want to catalogue your nursing statistics on the latest app. You’ll be thankful to have a spot to plug in your phone. Keep the remote handy too. I usually loved keeping the distractions to a minimum at times when I nursed my babies. But other times I just wanted to zone out with another episode of The Office.

This one allows you to charge multiple devices at once and includes a 4-pack of charging connectors. I like that there is a spot for my Fitbit and I could prop my phone, Kindle, or tablet up if needed. The bamboo looks sturdy too so it won’t get unbalanced easily. (Amazon, $ 25.99)

charging-station-for-nursing

These are my essentials. As your body (and your baby’s!) adjusts to nursing, you’ll soon be able to nurse anywhere. But be kind to yourself those first few weeks. You’ll be glad you did.

Everything you wanted to know about Taiwan

Many people head to Asia when backpacking, the hot climate, and rich cultural history attract thousands every year. Not many of us take the time to research and uncover the history of the countries we visit, preferring to jump right in and get exploring. It might be worth just taking a second to try to understand the history of Taiwan should you be heading there though.

A brief history

Taiwan is officially called the Republic of China, it neighbors China, Japan, and the Philippines. It is the most densely populated nation that doesn’t belong to the United Nations. Taiwan was ruled by the ancient Chinese Qing dynasty before they ceded the country to Japan in 1895. After World War II and the Japanese surrender to the Allies, Taiwan was once again controlled by China. Taiwan now governs itself, and China has no control over them, despite their protestations saying otherwise. Alright, enough history, where should you visit?

Taipei

Like most countries, it is always worth swinging by their capital city to get a feel for the culture and vibrancy of the nation. If you visit the city, you must venture out at night to discover the fabulous night markets. These markets offer many local delicacies, and there is no shortage of the street snacks, so make sure you go with an empty stomach to pack as much in as possible. Take a trip out to Pingxi, an hour from the city, and let off a sky lantern. The area is well-known for its Sky Lantern festival in February or March. If you feel like a walk, try hiking Elephant Mountain. Many trails are well marked, and the scenery is unbelievably green, once at the top of the mountain you can take in the whole city. Bring a camera!

Yangmingshan National Park

The national park is one of Taiwan’s greatest attractions and contains hot springs and geysers as well as volcanic rock. Amazingly, entry to the park is free, but vehicles will incur a parking charge. Paid tours are available for those not comfortable setting off on their own. Travelers enjoy walks to the flower clock and strolling through the cherry blossom or calla lily fields.

Tainan

The former capital city of Taiwan is full of hidden secrets just waiting to be discovered. Head to the Ten Drum Culture Village to witness the huge drum that was converted from a disused sugar refinery. Locals recommend visiting at night due to the lights they have in place around the instrument. Sticking with the theme of transformation, you must visit the Anping Tree House, in the Anping district. This house has been almost entirely taken over by mother nature, and many people draw comparisons to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Entrance is less than $ 2, so it really is worth a visit.

Taroko National Park

Visit the Eternal Springs Shrine, built to commemorate those who lost their lives during its construction. The shrine is placed within the Taroko gorge and is a must see if you visit the park, visitors to the park recommend heading up to the bell tower near the shrine to get a good view of the scenery. Following the shrine, visitors must hike the swallow grotto trail, which goes through several tunnels, the name comes from the swallows nesting in the cliff rocks. The short hike has many wonderful views and is a peaceful stroll through the park.

Those were some of the places we recommend you check out during your trip to Taiwan. The value for money is incredible, with many attractions costing just a few dollars apiece, which definitely will not break the bank.

Everything you wanted to know about Singapore

Located in Southeast Asia, the island city-state of Singapore is an incredible destination to add to your travel bucket list. Packed full of religious landmarks, vast shopping malls and modern gardens, there is so much to appreciate in this beautiful corner of the world. Plus, with its tropical climate, you never need to worry about getting a chill. Doesn’t it sound like a paradise? If this hasn’t convinced you, just read on – there’s so much more for you to discover. Here is everything you’ve ever wanted to know about visiting Singapore.

A little insight

While Singapore may be relatively small, it packs a pretty big punch. It became independent from Malaysia in 1965, and those in charge have since worked hard to establish the area as a multicultural financial hub. They don’t play around – it’s illegal to chew gum or spit in public – but the sun, sights and Singaporeans more than make up for a couple of head-scratching regulations.

Let’s go to the mall

Singapore might be a long way to go to do some shopping, but if you’re in the area, then it’s worth taking a look in some of their malls. Shopping is an increasingly fundamental part of the city-state’s culture, and there are malls everywhere now. The Great Singapore Sale that happens annually is an incredible tourist attraction and worth attending if you’re there at the right time of year.

Get a taste

Singapore has become a hub of cultural delicacies, and not just their own. The mainland boasts fine dining experiences that easily rival its western counterparts, although you might be on the lookout for something a little more affordable. If that’s the case, Hawker centers are the place to go. They offer inexpensive food that embodies the fusion style that Singapore is known for, and are pretty common throughout the city. Food tours are also a regular occurrence out on the streets of Singapore, and they offer the perfect opportunity to challenge your taste buds and sample the local flavor without reservation.

City in a garden

A visit to Singapore isn’t complete without a visit to one of their many glorious gardens. It’s hard to miss them – the area is deeply rooted in nature. The National Orchid Garden is a particular highlight, where you can experience a scented tour of Singapore’s rich history, as well as the Gardens by the Bay. Covering an area of 101 hectares, these waterfront gardens offer a great selection of activities and attractions for everyone, not all of which involve flowers. There are light displays, art installations and even a children’s water park. If you do wish to stare at flowers, however, you can do a lot of that too.

Out for the night

Singapore isn’t generally considered a cheap place to visit, and it’s best to ensure you’ve got enough money tucked away before you make the trip. If you’re looking to have a drink or two in the evening, there are some amazing places for you to venture to, but know now that it might cost you. Drinks in Singapore tend to be more expensive, but a visit to somewhere like Clarke Quay will quickly help you to forget that. Cocktail bars can be found all over the city, and they all put their own little twist on some classic flavors.

If you’re interested in visiting Singapore, don’t let anything hold you back. The area has come into its own so much in the last few decades and has a lot to offer, even if you might have to flash the cash a little.

Everything you need to know about nail art for your wedding day

Everything you need to know about nail art for your wedding day

Everything you need to know about nail art for your wedding day

If you’re searching for a way to help your wedding day manicure stand out in a sea of neutrals, you might want to put nail art on your radar. Enter Paintbox, the New York City-based salon known for turning bare nails into miniature pieces of modern art with inspired designs, two-tone color schemes, and intriguing textures. And, thanks to their brand new bridal menu, their artists now officially offer specific nail art looks that were designed with the bride-to-be in mind. The best part? You don’t have to be planning a futuristic fête to try the trend. “Our bridal look book is broken up into categories to make it super simple for anyone to be able to choose her look based on her mood and style,” explains Julie Kandalec, Paintbox’s Creative Director. Here, she gives a little insight into wedding nail art trends and her advice for brides who want big day manis with a side of Matisse.

The French manicure is on its way out.

At least, it is in New York City, says Kandalec. Instead, women most frequently asked for design like thin lines of glitter, glitter ombré, and crescent slivers. Just as popular? A straight wash of sheer pink or peach—looks like your favorite neutral is safe for another season.

Glitter is on the rise.

“We see a full range of classic to sparkly, but there’s definitely a lot of glitter going on during wedding season!” reveals Kandalec. Not sure what type of glitter to ask for? Look to your engagement ring for the perfect sparkly shade, she suggests. “A bride will always lean towards milky whites, sheer pinks, and pale blush pinks, but I always suggest a bit of sparkle in the same color as her engagement ring.” A lilac base, she adds, is also up and coming.

Courtesy of Paintbox

Nail art won’t overpower the rest of your look.

So you can rest assured. For brides who want to keep things subtle, Kandalec designed Luxe 03 (solid peach base with two squiggly lines) and Graphic 01 (light pink base with a skinny asymmetrical curve). “I designed Luxe 03 to be more than a solid nail but not overpowering,” she says. “Graphic 01 is so minimal—it provides asymmetrical visual interest that’s more than just an angled stripe.”

Classic brides can get in on the fun, too.

Just because you don’t describe yourself as modern doesn’t mean nail art isn’t for you. Kandalec created the “Classic” range with this specific woman in mind—and recommends she start with Classic 01, which is created with opal foil. “It adds just the right amount of glamour to your nails to still be considered classic,” she adds. “Plus, it’ll softly reflect whatever color you’re wearing, making it the perfect chameleon shade.”

Nail art can be tailored around any nail length—but aim to grow them out.

“All lengths can be beautiful, but having some length for your wedding nails makes them more elegant for the formal occasion,” she continues. “Also, I love an almond shape—it’s more timeless than square!”

Do this to make your nail art last through the honeymoon.

Get gel, says Kandalec. “Since gel lasts two to three weeks, it’s definitely best to have it for the honeymoon. That way you can focus more on sipping piña coladas by the pool, rather than filing your nails by the pool!”

Everything you need to know about Target’s car seat trade-in

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

I want to hit “pause” on my almost-4-year-old son for many reasons. I just love the stage where he is right now, so cuddly and funny and jokey. I already look back on his baby photos and wonder what happened to that little guy. And, oh my goodness, how can it be time to upgrade his car seat to a booster already?

Lately I’ve been researching boosters and wincing at the prices, wondering how I’m going to wedge a new expense in the family budget.

Almost as if by magic, I found this exciting news from Target: In honor of Earth month, Target stores across the country are holding a car seat trade-in event. They’re helping folks recycle their old car seats while saving money on the necessary new ones. This sounded like the perfect way to get rid of the old, faded infant seat that has been gathering dust in the garage.

Why is it important to recycle your car seat? If you have anything older than six years, it’s probably expired or might not meet current regulations. A lot of car seats can’t be recycled through curbside programs. And car seats that have been in accidents should be replaced immediately. But you don’t want them going to a landfill, right?

An infant car seat that is recycled in the Target trade-in program

Here’s what you have to do:

Between April 22 and May 5, bring any unwanted car seat to your local Target. It can be any car seat — even if it’s 15 years old, even if you didn’t buy it from Target, even if you bought it from a sketchy guy named Chet on Craigslist. (Um, especially if you bought it from a sketchy guy named Chet on Craigslist.)

• Receive a coupon for 20-percent off a new car seat, booster seat, car seat base, travel system, or stroller. This is good for any in store or online purchases. (I’ve scoured the terms and conditions, and I didn’t see any off-limit brands. The sky’s the limit!)

• When you go to the store, there should be a big drop-off box in the customer service area, and a Target employee will will give you a coupon in exchange for your car seat.

(Note: The first Target I visited this morning said they were participating in the program, but they hadn’t received their coupons yet. I immediately went to another store, and they had the coupons. So maybe call ahead first just to be sure.)

A cardboard box at Target for the car seat drop-off event.

• You will receive one coupon per seat dropped off.

DEADLINE: The coupon is eligible through May 19, 2018.

The old car seats are recycled through Waste Management and are used to create new grocery carts, plastic buckets, and construction materials. Target has a little bit more info on that, if you’re interested. It’s a pretty big deal. Since launching the program in 2016, Target has recycled more than 176,000 car seats!

This is a win-win-win for me. Because of this program, I can get rid of the old infant seat that cluttering my garage, I know it’ll be used for something instead of sitting in a garbage heap, and the discount takes away some of the sting in buying a new product.

So I guess my son is allowed to grow up just a little more. And then I’ll hit “pause.”

Will you recycle your old car seat?

Everything you wanted to know about Kurdistan

Kurdistan is often thought of as a country but is actually loosely defined as a geo-political region populated by a majority of Kurdish people. Kurdistan encompasses the countries of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, and many Kurds wish to form an independent and autonomous nation. It’s important to make sure you understand the geopolitical ramifications of how other parts of the world are affected.

We think it’s important to learn as much as possible about Kurdistan, and the relations within the region. Recognizing and figuring out what Kurdish people want, and how they live in the countries they are in, is crucially important. The Kurds have played an important role recently in helping the United States battle ISIS, so here are a few things you should know about Kurdistan.

It has a unique and difficult history

Kurdistan has had a very difficult and unique history over the years, and this has led it to the point that it is now. The region lies in the Middle East, and its borders overlap Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. This has led to a big Kurdish influence in these countries, but, also, a lot of infighting and conflict. It is thought that they originated from a mix of Indo-European and Arabic tribes, but they didn’t really become a proper ethnic community before around 1918.

They are so close to independence

The Kurdish people have been controversially campaigning for their own independence for quite some time now. In fact, the Kurds are arguably the largest ethnic group in the world with no independent state of their own. In August 2017, a vote was held surrounding the issue of Kurdish independence, and votes were cast overwhelmingly in favor of independence. So, for the first time in their history, the Kurds could be on their way to becoming an independent nation.

Still not self-reliant

They may want independence, but it’s clear that Kurdistan still relies heavily on the governments of Turkey and Iraq. The main reason behind this is that they are not yet economically self-sufficient, in spite of the amount of oil they produce. So, it remains to be seen whether or not they will try to negotiate some sort of agreement with these nations if they do achieve independence.

They have a strong army

The Kurdish Army is often known as the peshmerga, and they have a reputation for being strong and fierce warriors. They are considered far more effective than the Iraqi Army, but they did struggle badly against ISIS before US intervention. The main problems seem to surround the fact that they don’t have great weapons, not to mention the political element. Whether their army would be strong enough to defend them as an independent nation is debatable.

So, now you know a little more about Kurdistan than you did before! So the next time it gets raised in conversation you will be able to get involved and be more knowledgeable! Kurdistan is a place seeking its own autonomy, and we will have to watch how events unfold surrounding potential independence.
