Production Halted On ‘Friends And Family Hustle’ After T.I.’s Sister Injured In Car Accident

T.I. and Tiny have shuttered production of their reality show, Friends & Family Hustle because the rapper’s sister (and cast member) was involved in a serious car crash.

We’ve learned that last Wednesday,  T.I. and Tiny halted production after learning that, Precious Harris, was injured badly earlier that morning. The incident also triggered an asthma attack for Precious.

Here’s MORE via TMZ:

It’s unclear what led to the car crash but here’s what we know … sources say Precious hit a pole, which triggered an asthma attack. The 66-year-old — who often appears on the show — was taken to a hospital where she’s now in ICU. Her exact condition is unknown.

We’re told Tip and Tiny were devastated and decided it was best not to move forward until Precious pulled through. T.I.’s incredibly close to his sister and so is Tiny.

For Precious’ 66th birthday bash last May, Tiny gave her a shout-out and said, “I hope you know how much u mean to me. Always been my road dawg. Love u much! Hope you enjoyed your day!!”

Family Affair: Tiffany Haddish Shares Funny Story That Drake & His Daddy Slid Into Her DM’s

'The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part' World Premiere - Arrivals

Source: Adriana M. Barraza/WENN.com / WENN

via Madamenoire:

Y’all already know that Tiffany Haddish doesn’t follow regular protocol when it comes to celebrities and the encounters she decides to share. Nothing is off limits. And during a recent interview with Glamour UK, Haddish shared that while she was trying to date Drake, as well as his father, Dennis Graham, was trying to get at her.

Haddish said, “Drake slid into my DMs and I had seen him a few days later. He’s like, ‘Yo, you didn’t respond to my DM.’ I was like, ‘I didn’t even know you followed me. ’He was like, ‘Well, I just wanted to know if you want to be in my music video.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay.’ So I did his music video. Then I thought, maybe something might happen. I was like ‘So you going to take me to dinner?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, we can eat dinner.’ Then, I never heard from him again. And that’s because I was being thirsty. That’s my fault! That’s my fault. I should have been like, ‘I’ll see if I can be in your little funky video. Who are you? What do you do again? His dad be hitting me up though and I turned his dad down. So I might end up being Drake’s stepmama.”

It’s abundantly clear that Drake’s daddy is enjoying his son’s fame and access. Ain’t no telling how many celebrities he’s pushing up on.

The Royal family favorite hotels

Ah, the Royal Family. Do they ever have time for a break? Although it seems as if this family are always on their feet, they still have plenty of time to relax and unwind – especially in some of their favorite hotels around the world.

Waldorf Astoria, New York

Both the Queen Mother and the Queen have stayed at the luxurious Waldorf Astoria over the years. In fact, it was their visits that saw the hotel build the incredible Royal Suite. While the hotel is currently closed while it undergoes some major renovations, guests could once stay in the suite for no less than $ 10,000 a night if they wanted a full royal experience. Thankfully, we only have a few years to wait before it’s back in business.

Coworth Park, Berkshire

It seems as though this hotel is such a popular choice for the Royal Family that Prince Harry even chose it as his place to stay before his big wedding day back in May 2018. Coworth Park is found in southern England, and it the only hotel in Britain to have its very own polo field. Both William and Harry have played on the green over the years and now enjoy returning for the night every now and then.

North Island, Seychelles

Seychelles is a small island off the east coast of Africa and has been the destination of many vacationing celebrities over the years. The North Island hotel has just 11 private villas to its name, and every one is surrounded by takamaka trees meaning it’s the ultimate place to find privacy. Prince William and Kate Middleton spent their honeymoon here in 2011, while George Clooney joined the guest list just three years later.

Walserhof, Klosters, Switzerland

Klosters has been a favorite destination place for many members of the Royal Family as there is so much to see and do in the area. Thankfully, many have found the resort of Walserhof more than perfect for a night or two away from the palace. The hotel is filled with elegance in every room, but that’s not all. There is also a Michelin-starred restaurant to fulfill all of their royal needs.

Peabody Hotel, Memphis

The Peabody Hotel is such a favorite of the Royal Family that Princes Harry and William rented out an entire floor of the hotel. The brothers were in the area for the wedding of Lizzy Wilson and Guy Pelly, and thought no place would be better to spend their time then this luxury resort. However, they weren’t alone. The Peabody Hotel also has five resident ducks who spend their day marching around the lobby and splashing in the marble fountain.

We might be used to seeing the Royals in the palace or on their world tours, but it seems as though this hard-working bunch also get some time to relax and unwind every now and then. Thankfully, there are a number of luxurious hotels all around the world that seem more than enough to accommodate the needs of this incredible family.

How This Family Lives Off $45K/Year While Raising a Special Needs Child

On a late November afternoon, Vicki Fouche heats up slices of frozen pizza in the toaster oven for lunch.

Her daughter Hannah, 10, waits at the dining room table in their Ocala, Florida, home.

Hannah has challenges eating on her own. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects motor skills, muscle tone and movement, when she was 6 months old.

Vicki, 48, places two plates in front of Hannah. “Look here. Which pizza do you want? Do you want ‘The Lion King’ or Olaf?” Vicki asks, referring to the Disney characters decorating each plate. “Which would you like? Lion King? Olaf?”

Hannah replies with just a sound — one that would be incomprehensible to most. But without any words exchanged, her mom knows what’s wrong.

“You don’t want either one?” she guesses. “You want pretzel bites?”

Hannah utters another obscure sound.

“You’re a pain in the butt, do you know that?” Vicki jokes, and she whisks the plates away from Hannah, handing a pizza slice off to Hannah’s 21-year-old sister, Bethany.

Vicki heads back to the freezer to get some pretzel bites, one of Hannah’s favorite foods.

When Hannah’s lunch is heated, Vicki brings a plate over to Hannah, whose attention is fixed on the iPad in front of her. Vicki proceeds to cut the pretzel bites into small pieces and feed her.

Hannah’s condition is hypotonic, meaning she has low muscle tone — specifically in her head, neck and trunk. She can’t stand on her own, walk or talk.

Hannah has the cognitive abilities to communicate; she just lacks the physical abilities to speak more than a few words. She uses an app on her iPad that lets her select words and phrases to speak aloud for her. In fact, Vicki says Hannah often uses the app to request pretzel bites.

There are many variations of cerebral palsy. For some, the disorder has a minimal effect on their lives. Others require around-the-clock care.

An older sister helps her little sister find a game on her iPad.

According to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation, 1 in 323 U.S. babies are diagnosed with cerebral palsy. There is no known cure for the disorder, which affects approximately 17 million people across the globe.

Hannah’s physical challenges mean that Vicki and her husband, Tim, have to care for Hannah in ways similar to caring for an infant. They feed her. They bathe her. They carry her down the hallway and lift her into her safety bed, which resembles an oversized crib.

Hannah’s parents also shoulder all the financial responsibilities of raising a child with cerebral palsy.

The Fouches are a family of five living off less than $ 45,000 per year. Though Bethany, their oldest daughter, doesn’t live at home anymore, Vicki and Tim have a 6-year-old daughter, Mikayla, and they took in their 15-year-old niece, Naomi, last summer.

Tim, 48, who works as a residential construction estimator for a custom home builder, is the family’s sole breadwinner.

“I work hard,” Tim says. “As a husband and a dad, you try to maintain a balance of working and being there for your family, too, at the same time. When you do that and you still feel like you’re falling short at the end of the month… it gets frustrating sometimes.”

Why Making More Money Isn’t an Option

A married couple sit at their kitchen table discussing finances.

The family qualifies for Medicaid and Social Security benefits for Hannah, plus a scholarship that covers home-schooling expenses. But Vicki says she’s scared of the possibility of losing that assistance if her husband makes more money.

“We’re [between] the proverbial rock and a hard place,” she says.

The Fouches know other families with disabled children that don’t qualify for assistance and aren’t able to get certain treatment or equipment covered under their private insurance.

“If [Tim] were to make more money and then they took [Medicaid away], it would cost us more in the long run,” Vicki says.

Vicki usually handles paying the bills and budgeting for the family since Tim works full time.

“How she does it, I don’t know,” Tim says. “She takes something out of nothing, and she pays the bills. But it’s a struggle every month.”

The Fouches have between $ 10,000 and $ 15,000 in credit card debt. They’ve used their credit cards when unexpected expenses came up, such as when the transmission went out in their minivan last year. They’ve made home-schooling purchases on credit, only to later find out Hannah’s scholarship wouldn’t reimburse the expense.

Every year, they like to put money aside from their tax refund to save for emergencies. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stretch through the year. They don’t have any other financial safety net.

“We never have money to save,” Vicki says. “We’re lucky that we have enough to pay our bills.”

Medicaid Helps… but It Has Limits

Each week, Hannah sees a speech therapist, physical therapist and occupational therapist. She also participates in therapeutic horseback riding. Because of assistance, the Fouches don’t have to pay out of pocket for any of that.

The Fouches have also gotten some of Hannah’s equipment paid for through Medicaid: an electric wheelchair, a manual wheelchair, a walker, a shower chair and Hannah’s safety bed, plus her nutritional drinks and diapers.

“We’re very, very blessed,” Vicki says.

But Vicki says the diapers Medicaid covers for Hannah leak easily. The electric wheelchair has malfunctioned several times.

Hannah never felt comfortable in the first shower chair they were able to get through Medicaid when she was little, so her father built one out of PVC pipe and trampoline material.

Vicki says she’s glad her husband is so handy. He also built a makeshift wheelchair ramp for their front door and widened the entrance into their kitchen so Hannah’s wheelchair could fit through.

A daughter is bathed by her mother.

Getting requests approved through Medicaid can be challenging, Vicki says. She says the agency requires in-depth explanations about why they need certain equipment or therapy and how Hannah will benefit.

And even when something is approved, the family sometimes still has to pay for part of it. Last spring, for example, Hannah received three weeks of intensive therapy at a facility in Melbourne, Florida. Medicaid covered the cost of the therapy, but the family had to pay for travel and lodging, since the facility was three and a half hours from home.

The family sold bracelets as a fundraiser and made about $ 2,300.

“We ended up having to come up with some of it out of our pocket,” she says. “We raised most of it, but not [all].”

A Plan Abandoned

A mother pushes one daughter in a shopping cart and the other daughter in a wheel char as she grocery shops at Sam's Club.

Vicki used to work as a Girl Scouts program coordinator, but high day care costs caused her to become a stay-at-home mom after having Hannah. She thought it would be temporary and that she’d go back to work once Hannah started kindergarten. Then, she got unexpectedly pregnant with Mikayla.

Vicki had her tubes tied after that pregnancy. With Hannah in school, Vicki’s new plan was to go back to work once Mikayla was in kindergarten. But then Hannah started having troubling experiences at school.

“She came home one time with rug burn on her cheek, a black eye, a split-open lip, and they say she fell over at circle time,” Vicki recalls, saying she suspects Hannah fell off a changing table instead. “She would come home 90% of the time with her lunch [uneaten].”

The Fouches were concerned their daughter wasn’t getting proper care at school. Two weeks before Hannah was going to start third grade, her parents told her she’d be going back to school soon. She cried hysterically.

“What kid at 8 years old hates school so bad?” Vicki asks.

So the Fouches made the decision to home-school their girls, and Vicki abandoned her plan to return to work. Though Vicki does a lot for her family, she sometimes feels bad that she isn’t able to earn an income. However, Tim says he’s very thankful for the role she’s taken on.

“[It’s] worth a whole lot for her to be with our children, to keep them safe and [see to it] that they’re taken care of and getting a good education,” he says.

That’s not the only sacrifice the Fouches have had to make.

A girl with cerebral palsy rides on a horse as part of a therapy session.

Vicki says they choose not to go to places as a family that aren’t accommodating for Hannah, like the playground or the fair. If Mikayla wants to go, she has to wait until one parent can stay home to watch Hannah.

The Fouches try to make sure Mikayla gets to do things she likes — such as gymnastics and T-ball — but the money isn’t always there for her to participate. Vicki says they had to charge T-ball registration fees to their credit card. They pay per class for gymnastics, and when money is tight, they’ll just skip it for the week.

One special treat the entire family enjoys is going to Disney World, which is only about an hour-and-a-half drive from their home. Last year, the Fouches had annual passes. They got them as a Christmas gift for the girls and paid for them in monthly installments. However, Vicki says they decided not to renew the passes for this year after Disney raised its prices.

“That’s been really frustrating,” she says. “That’s really the only thing that we do with the kids… Hannah doesn’t feel disabled at Disney. She can go on all the rides. She can’t do that at all the other parks.”

Their Plans and Dreams for an Uncertain Future

About a decade ago, when Hannah was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Vicki remembers the doctor explaining the diagnosis twice.

“I guess most people get hysterical and we didn’t, so the doctor [asked], ‘Do you understand what I’m saying to you?’” she says.

But Vicki and Tim knew something serious was wrong with Hannah. Their infant daughter wasn’t meeting typical milestones for her age. Unbeknownst to each other, they both had suspected it was cerebral palsy.

Instead of being devastated, they were grateful Hannah didn’t have a terminal illness, but rather a disorder that can improve over time through therapy.

And the Fouches have seen Hannah progress over the years. She can sit up unassisted, whereas before her body wasn’t strong enough to support itself.

One speech therapist told the Fouches that Hannah would never be able to work a communication device.

“She said she would never be strong enough to push the buttons on the communication thing,” Vicki recalls. “And yeah, this kid’s a whip on the iPad. It’s not even funny.”

A mother comforts her daughter at a doctor's appointment.
A family comfort one of the girls as she cries in bed.

In early December, Hannah was fitted for a leg brace that will keep her body from folding up in her sleep. Since she can’t control her limbs, it can be dangerous if she bends herself in half overnight, causing her to hurt herself or even block her breathing. Hannah often sleeps in her worried parents’ bed so they can closely monitor her.

A few weeks after getting the brace, Tim says she’s still having trouble adjusting to it. Hannah’s therapist suggested putting the brace on for an hour or two in the evening and working their way up to using it while she sleeps. Once Hannah is able to use the brace overnight and transition to her own bed, her parents will be able to get a more restful night’s sleep.

There’s still other equipment the Fouches wish Hannah had to better her life.

They’d love for Hannah to have a mobile stander, a device that would help her stand and move around without having to support her own weight.

“We can stand her for a little bit… but the last couple times we had her in her walker, she’s gotten so overheated, she’s thrown up,” Vicki says.

A father carries his daughter to the living room.

Having a device that doesn’t make Hannah strain to support herself would be ideal. Being in a wheelchair so often causes Hannah to have poor circulation in her legs.

However, Vicki says Medicaid won’t cover the mobile stander, because Hannah already has the electric wheelchair. She says it’d cost $ 5,600 to pay for out of pocket — money the family doesn’t have.

She also says it’d be wonderful to have a hoist system in the house to lift Hannah up. At 60 pounds, Hannah isn’t easy to carry anymore.

“I’m scared I’m going to fall with her,” says Vicki, who had to be hospitalized twice last year after bad falls. Luckily, she wasn’t carrying Hannah on either occasion.

A father sleeps on the couch in his living room.

The Fouches also wish they had a handicap-accessible van, but they can’t afford one. Vicki said even getting their current minivan converted to be wheelchair accessible would cost around $ 15,000.

Instead, they have to lift Hannah into the minivan, and they use her manual wheelchair when they go out.

Hannah’s only 10 now, but Tim and Vicki have thought about what her life will be like as she gets older. It’s uncertain what Hannah will be able to do on her own once she reaches adulthood.

“If we could have one wish for her… I would really hope at some point that she could be able to speak,” Vicki says. “I think that would make a huge difference for her, instead of having to rely on a communication device. I don’t know if that will ever happen — and if it doesn’t, it’s fine — but if I had a choice between her walking or speaking, I’d rather have her speak.”

One thing Vicki and Tim do know is that they never want to place Hannah in a nursing home. The Fouches say their faith in God gives them strength to handle all the challenges that come their way.

Overall, Vicki’s greatest hope for her daughter is one most parents have for their child.

“I just want her to have as [good of] a life as she can,” she says.

The U.S. Has Never Needed Paid Family and Medical Leave More

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) turned 26 this week, just as President Trump was preparing to talk paid leave during his State of the Union address.

The Family Medical Leave Act was an important first step. Now it’s time to pass the FAMILY Act. (MomsRising)

As the most female Congress in history gets to work, lawmakers have an urgent imperative to adopt comprehensive paid family and medical leave that allows all workers to care for their families without risking their jobs or financial security. No issue is more important to moms across the country.

Moms need paid leave to care for new babies, for sure, but also to care for a spouse or sibling who is battling heart disease or a parent struggling with dementia, or to recover from illness or injury.

Not just any paid leave program will do: The U.S. needs a comprehensive, meaningful paid leave program that covers all workers, addresses the range of caregiving needs families face, expands the definition of family, provides wage replacement sufficient to allow workers with low wages to take leave and ensures that the same or comparable jobs will be there when workers return from their leave.

We expect that, as with last year’s State of the Union, Trump’s lip service to paid leave will be followed with sparse details. In the past, his paid leave proposals have fallen far short of what working families need—providing only parental leave, doing nothing for workers who need leave to care for a sick family member or to recover from illness—and the benefits they would offer would not be meaningful, and would be especially inadequate for workers with lower incomes and wages. Their eligibility rules may even exclude the new parents who need leave the most.

That is not what the country needs.

Similarly, some Republican lawmakers have offered proposals that are deeply, even fatally, flawed—because they would reinforce stereotypes about women, require workers to trade future Social Security benefits for paid leave and/or provide inadequate job protections.

That would not be what our country needs.

Twenty-six years ago, the FMLA required certain employers to provide workers with 12 weeks of unpaid job-protected leave to welcome a new child, care for an ill family member or recover from a serious illness. It was a vitally important starting point, but it does not meet the needs of working families or our economy today.

We need the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act to boost moms and families, strengthen our economy, improve our health and make our workplaces more equitable.

The FAMILY Act, which we expect will be introduced in both the House and Senate very soon, would create a social insurance fund with small contributions from employees and employers; provide all workers with a meaningful amount of leave to meet the full range of caregiving needs; and be affordable, cost-effective and sustainable for workers, employers and taxpayers.

We want to be clear: A paid leave program that provides only parental leave is a non-starter for the millions of MomsRising members across the country who see paid family and medical leave as top priority issue.

Congress must pass the FAMILY Act, and President Trump must sign it into law. It’s time for the U.S. to finally give moms, and all workers, access to paid family and medical leave.

Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner is the author of Keep Marching and Executive Director and CEO of MomsRising—an on-the-ground and online grassroots organization of more than a million people who are working to increase family economic security, decrease discrimination against women and moms and build a nation where businesses and families can thrive.

Lawsuit Details How The Sackler Family Allegedly Built An OxyContin Fortune

The first nine months of 2013 started off as a banner year for the Sackler family, owners of the pharmaceutical company that produces OxyContin, the addictive opioid pain medication. Purdue Pharma paid the family $ 400 million from its profits during that time, claims a lawsuit filed by the Massachusetts attorney general.

However, when profits dropped in the fourth quarter, the family allegedly supported the company’s intense push to increase sales representatives’ visits to doctors and other prescribers.

Purdue had hired a consulting firm to help reps target “high-prescribing” doctors, including several in Massachusetts. One physician in a town south of Boston wrote an additional 167 prescriptions for OxyContin after sales representatives increased their visits, according to the latest version of the lawsuit filed Thursday in Suffolk County Superior Court in Boston.

The lawsuit claims Purdue paid members of the Sackler family more than $ 4 billion between 2008 and 2016. Eight members of the family who served on the board or as executives as well as several directors and officers with Purdue are named in the lawsuit. This is the first lawsuit among hundreds of others that were previously filed across the country to charge the Sacklers with personally profiting from the harm and death of people taking the company’s opioids.

WBUR along with several other media sued Purdue Pharma to force the release of previously redacted information that was filed in the Massachusetts Superior Court case. When a judge ordered the records to be released with few, if any, redactions this week, Purdue filed two appeals and lost.

The complaint filed by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey says that former Purdue Pharma CEO Richard Sackler allegedly suggested the family sell the company or, if they weren’t able to find a buyer, to milk the drugmaker’s profits and “distribute more free cash flow” to themselves.

That was in 2008, one year after Purdue pleaded guilty to a felony and agreed to stop misrepresenting the addictive potential of its highly profitable painkiller, OxyContin.

At a board meeting in June 2008, the complaint says, the Sacklers voted to pay themselves $ 250 million. Another payment in September totaled $ 199 million.

The company continued to receive complaints about OxyContin similar to those that led to the 2007 guilty plea, according to unredacted documents filed in the case.

While the company settled lawsuits in 2009 totaling $ 2.7 million brought by family members of those who had been harmed by OxyContin throughout the country, the company amped up its marketing of the drug to physicians by spending $ 121.6 million on sales reps for the coming year. The Sacklers paid themselves $ 335 million that year.

The lawsuit claims Sackler family members directed efforts to boost sales. An attorney for the family and other board directors is challenging the authority to make that claim in Massachusetts. A motion on jurisdiction in the case hasn’t been heard. That attorney hasn’t responded to a request for comment on the most recent allegations.

Purdue Pharma, in a statement, said the complaint filed by Healey is “part of a continuing effort to single out Purdue, blame it for the entire opioid crisis, and try the case in the court of public opinion rather than the justice system.”

Purdue went on to charge Healey with attempting to “vilify” Purdue in a complaint “riddled with demonstrably inaccurate allegations.” Purdue said it has more than 65 initiatives aimed at reducing the misuse of prescription opioids. The company says Healey fails to acknowledge that most opioid overdose deaths are currently the result of fentanyl.

Purdue fought the release of many sections of the 274-page complaint. Attorneys for the company said at a hearing on Jan. 25 that they had agreed to release much more information in Massachusetts than has been cleared by a judge overseeing hundreds of cases consolidated in Ohio. Purdue filed both state and federal appeals this week to block release of the compensation figures and other information about Purdue’s plan to expand into drugs to treat opioid addiction.

The attorney general’s complaint says that in a ploy to distance themselves from the emerging statistics and studies that showed OxyContin’s addictive characteristics, the Sacklers approved public marketing plans that labeled people hurt by opioids as “junkies” and “criminals.”

Richard Sackler allegedly wrote that Purdue should “hammer” them in every way possible.

While Purdue Pharma publicly denied its opioids were addictive, internally company officials were acknowledging it and devising a plan to profit off them even more, the complaint states.

Kathe Sackler, a board member, pitched “Project Tango,” a secret plan to grow Purdue beyond providing painkillers by also providing a drug, Suboxone, to treat those addicted.

“Addictive opioids and opioid addiction are ‘naturally linked,’” she allegedly wrote in September 2014.

According to the lawsuit, Purdue staff wrote: “It is an attractive market. Large unmet need for vulnerable, underserved and stigmatized patient population suffering from substance abuse, dependence and addiction.”

They predicted that 40-60 percent of the patients buying Suboxone for the first time would relapse and have to take it again, which meant more revenue.

Purdue never went through with it, but Attorney General Healey contends this and other internal documents show the family’s greed and disregard for the welfare of patients.

Arcade Fire’s Will Butler on His ‘Showbiz Mormon’ Family and How His Granddad Pioneered the Electric Guitar

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

There’s a scene in the 1944 Ann Miller musical Jam Session that opens on a talking guitar. In the first shot, the neck of the guitar, carved into a face with the off-kilter stare and wobbling jaw of a ventriloquist dummy, croaks out lyrics: “I am the spirit of the St. Louis Blues, I am so bluuue, all the day long I am blue, all the day long I am so bluuuuue.” The puppet’s words sound weird—not quite guitar, not quite human. They were voiced by an analog “vocoder,” a kind of music tech that might sound more at home in a Kraftwerk album, than among Hollywood show tunes and old school swing bands.

But the dummy guitar was a prelude to the Alvino Rey Orchestra, a group whose frontman, Alvino Rey, pioneered early electronic instruments, and has been hailed as the grandfather of the modern electric guitar. He’s also the grandfather of Win and Will Butler, the brothers behind Arcade Fire.

Born in 1908, Rey’s bizarre musical trajectory stretched across the 20th century, zig-zagging from lowbrow to high, and weaving through major moments in American politics and pop culture. That’s the story that Will, the younger Butler and sideman of Arcade Fire, is telling in the latest issue of Pop-Up magazine, a live, mixed-media variety show currently touring the country and playing at Brooklyn Academy of Music on Feb. 7. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Butler described Rey as unassuming guy whose life, almost by accident, ballooned out into homeric epic. “He was kind of like a nerdy guitar player swept into all of American history,” Butler said.

Alianna DeFreeze’s Family Sues School for Not Reporting Their Murdered Daughter Missing for 10 Hours

Courtesy The Alianna DeFreeze “Make a Change” Foundation

The last time Donnesha Cooper saw her 14-year-old daughter Alianna DeFreeze, she was “sprinting to the bus” on Jan. 26, 2017 to catch an early-morning tutoring session at school.

DeFreeze, a Cleveland seventh grader who had a developmental disability, “loved school and never missed a day,” often catching the first bus to arrive over an hour before classes started at E Prep and Village Prep Woodland Hills.

It was “freezing” on that particular Thursday, her mother recalled, which is probably why her daughter walked quickly down the street around 7 a.m. to her school bus when Christopher Whitaker, a convicted sex offender, “took her and brought her to an abandoned house nearby.”

Next 3 Exciting Family Adventures: 'Dumbo,' 'Detective Pikachu,' 'Aladdin'

Directed by Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), The Kid Who Would Be King is a swashbuckling family adventure that rated highly with critics, as noted at Rotten Tomatoes. Sadly, it hasn't fared as well at the box office, though; more people turned out in theaters over this past weekend for Glass, The Upside and Aquaman.

Still, the potential audience for family-friendly adventures remains incredibly large, so the question becomes: which forthcoming live-action productions will grab the…

Top places where the British Royal family travels during winter

When most people hear about the royal family, all they think about is wealth and extravagance. Most of us think that because of their position, they only spend their time in the most luxurious and expensive cities during winter. However, this is not the case.

The British royal family often spends their time in some of the simplest but coolest regions of the world. They have been known to travel as far as Africa just to enjoy themselves. Here are the top locations where the British royal family loves to travel in winter.

1. Scotland

For many years now, Scotland has been the choice destination for Queen Elizabeth during winter. Her Royal Highness and Prince Philip usually spend their time in the private Balmoral Castle. Here, all other family members usually visit and enjoy themselves. The region is ideal for many sports that are loved by the royal family, including fishing, hunting, and taking walks on the beach. The climate in Scotland is very favorable, so the family can stay a bit warmer there during winter.

2. Norfolk

Norfolk, England is an eastern county, and is a traditional vacation spot for the royal family during winter. Here, they stay at Sandringham House where there are expensive gardens, woodland estates, wetlands, a country park, and tidal mudflats to enjoy. This is the perfect outdoor destination just for the Royal family to enjoy. William and Kate own a house in Sandringham Estate, too. They love to spend their time here with their loved ones.

3. Corfu Island, Greece

When it comes to picking a vacation destination, the royal family usually considers the sand, sea, and sun. The royal family usually selects Corfu Island as an ideal place for a relaxing vacation during the winter, where they often stay at Rothschild Villa. Corfu is famously known for its wonderful scenery and secluded beaches. Corfu’s center has been named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, because of its historic buildings including palaces, churches, and forts.

4. Kenya

Another location that is loved by the British royal family is a country located in East Africa next to the Indian Ocean – Kenya. Her Royal Highness spent time at Treetops Safari Lodge in 1952, where she received the news of her father’s death and that she was now a Queen. In 1983, she made another trip back to Kenya, this time with Prince Philip. Kenya was also the location where Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton while the couple was staying at Lake Rutundu back in 2010. The climate in Kenya makes the country an ideal place for vacations during winter.

5. Botswana

This is another favorite destination for the royal family. Its warm temperatures, as well as sunny days all year round, make it an ideal place for a vacation. Prince Harry spent a gap year helping out in Botswana, where he set up a charity for children who were in need of medical care and assistance. He also took a trip there with Meghan Markle, which helped the couple to cement their relationship.

Toya Wright Sends An Important Message To Fans Ahead Of Christmas With A Family Photo – People Say That Reigny Is The Spitting Image Of Her Dad

Toya Wright wanted to express something very important with her latest photo and message that she shared on her social media account. Check it out below:

Toya wrote ‘put down your phone and step away from the computer. Enjoy your family this holiday season. Happy Holidays from our Family to yours. 🎅🏽🎄🎁

Someone said ‘And meanwhile Your whole Entire Family is on phones and computers 😂🤣😂. Very Beautiful Family photo ❤’ Of course, Toya only wanted to highlight her message with the picture which is somewhat a sarcastic one.

Someone else said ‘Toya, you and your hubby and the baby was pretending for the camera, the two older girls were using their phone for real I’m sure lol.’

One of Toya’s fans said that Reingy looks just like her dad: ‘Reign looks JUST like her father OMGEEEEE!!!! Beautiful family❤

Another commenter posted ‘I am Happy to see you and your family so Happy. May God continue to Bless you, and I pray that he gives you all of your hearts desires. Blessings Sis.’

One other supported also believes that Reigny is Robert’s twin: ‘Reign don’t look exactly like her daddy ….he spit her out literally. She is him all over again.’

In other news, there were some rumors claiming that Toya and Robert made their relationship official, but it turned out that the rumors are not accurate.

It all began from a clip of TI And Tiny’s: Friends And Family Hustle, released on the 17th of December, Toya joked to Tiny that she and Robert had decided to get married privately. But it was only a joke.

Designer Space: Family Class

HOMEOWNERS, JANET AND VICTOR, AND THEIR TWO TEENAGED SONS, LIVED IN THEIR HOME FOR 15 YEARS BEFORE DECIDING IT WAS TIME FOR AN UPDATE. Their property contains four floors with three bedrooms and a basement. At 2,640 square feet, the homeowners knew a design overhaul was no small job, so they procured the expertise of award-winning designer Yvonne Whelan to head the project.

Save for a few special requests, Janet, an IT professional, and Victor, a finance executive, put their trust in their designer. Says Yvonne, “I sent them a mood board and we went from there. The goal was to bring in some fun and not to be too serious, but always classy.”

Though the home was well overdue for an interior update, the project was born from a desire to renovate the kitchen. “We wanted a fresher look and to brighten things up a bit,” says Janet. “One special request was to maintain an eat-in kitchen. It was important for us to have a proper table around which our family could easily gather every day for meals.”

From the outset, the kitchen had good bones. As such, Yvonne chose to keep the layout and cabinetry intact. After redesign, the kitchen boasts custom millwork, a modernized fireplace, and custom banquet – ideal for convening as a family. Yvonne also opted to paint the cabinetry, and change the backsplash, hardware, sink, and faucet. She divulges the sphere-shaped pendant lights in the kitchen were a splurge made possible by saving on replacing cabinets.

The furniture interspersed throughout the home is a mix of old and new. “They had some beautiful pieces that were investment pieces, but the homeowners were open to upholstery upgrades and painting,” explains Yvonne. “They were also open to suggestions to add new pieces, especially built-in options, to maximize their space.”

As for the color scheme, the homeowners credit Yvonne. “The great thing about working with Yvonne was that she really took the time to get to know our style and understand our family’s day-to-day living preferences. Using these insights, she narrowed down all of the numerous design choices and presented them to us in a way that was less overwhelming than trying to source everything ourselves and make decisions on our own.”

On the main floor, the designer opted for a trend-forward greige for the walls. Vibrant accent pillows and polychromatic artwork serve to permeate any monotony. Says Yvonne, “The homeowners love color so I brought it in wherever possible.”

“As for the bedrooms, we wanted calming and timeless colors to stand the test of time,” says Yvonne. She cites the circular motif wallpaper as the jumping off point for the rest of the master bedroom design. “We kept
the homeowners’ beautiful bed and dressers but updated the hardware. We also brought in stunning drapery, art, lamps, a chandelier, and a new custom bench and chaise.”

Post-renovation, the family has nothing but positive things to say about their like-new home. “My favorite thing is that the design aesthetic flows everywhere throughout the house and feels consistent,” says Janet. “Every room reflects our personal style and we all feel comfortable in the space. I look around and feel both a sense of calm, and excitement about the home we’ve created for our family at the same time.”

Letitia James First Black New York Attorney General is Coming For Trump’s Neck — And His Family

Michael Cohen won’t be the only Trump associate serving time in the pen for breaking the law if it’s up to Letitia James. The incoming New York Attorney General revealed that she plans to ignite a fire under President Donald Trump and anyone in his camp who may have engaged in illegal activity within her jurisdiction once she steps into her new role next month.

“We will use every area of the law to investigate President Trump and his business transactions and that of his family as well,” she said in an exclusive interview with NBC News. James, who currently serves as New York City’s Public Advocate, became the first African American and the first woman to be elected as attorney general in New York, making her one of many African Americans who scored a historic win during the 2018 Midterm Election. “We want to investigate anyone in his orbit who has, in fact, violated the law,” she added.

The former New York City Councilwoman went on to outline the following probes she intends to pursue regarding the president’s namesake business, the Trump Organization, his campaign headquarters, and the Trump Tower — all of which are based in New York.

  • Any illegalities involving Trump’s real estate holdings in New York, highlighting the October New York Times investigation into the president’s finances.
  • The June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian official.
  • Examine government subsidies Trump received, which were also the subjectof Times investigative work.
  • Whether he is in violation of the emoluments clause in the U.S. Constitution through his New York businesses.
  • Continue to probe the Trump Foundation.

James is also working on passing a bill that would change New York’s double jeopardy laws so that she could potentially indict someone who allegedly violates New York state law even if they are granted a presidential pardon over federal charges or convictions.

“I think within the first 100 days this bill will be passed,” she said, adding, “It is a priority because I have concerns with respect to the possibility that this administration might pardon some individuals who might face some criminal charges, but I do not want them to be immune from state charges.”

She added, “taking on President Trump and looking at all of the violations of law I think is no match to what I have seen in my lifetime.”

Maxine Waters

Rep. Maxine Waters (Image: Flickr)

James is not the only black woman in office itching to light a fire under Trump. Rep. Maxine Waters, who has led the charge to impeach Trump, is poised to take over the House Financial Services Committee, which would give her the power to subpoena the president. As chair of the powerful banking panel, Waters could target Deutsche Bank for its past dealings with Trump and issue subpoenas to Trump allies, like Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, forcing him to provide documentation regarding the president’s alleged ties to Russia.

Kamala Harris

Rep. Kamala Harris is another woman who could give Trump a run for his money should she decide to jump into the 2020 presidential race. She told The Hill that she intends to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2020 over the holidays, adding that it will “ultimately be a family decision.”

Family of Black Man, Don Shirley, Portrayed in “The Green Book” Blasts Movie and Its “Lies”

The family members of Don Shirley, the Jamaican-American pianist depicted in the movie The Green Book,  has issued a strong condemnation of the film which is based on events in Shirley’s life.

“As the only living brother of Dr. Donald W. Shirley, I, Maurice E. Shirley, Sr. am compelled to respond to this article. In agreement with Malcolm X who proffered that ‘every White man in America profits directly or indirectly from his position vis-a-vis Negroes, profits from racism even though he does not practice it or believe it.’ This movie, “The Green Book” is NOT about MY brother, but about money, white privilege, assumption, and Tony Lip!” writes Maurice Shirley in a letter sent to media including Black Enterprise.

The Green Book tells the story of Shirley and his white chauffeur and later actor, Frank Anthony “Tony Lip” Vallelonga as they travel through the Southern United States for an eight-week concert tour Shirley is scheduled to play. Vallelonga, who is from New York, is given a copy of The Green Book, a guide that actually existed, that instructed African American travelers on where to find safe havens throughout the deeply-segregated ’60s South. It is based on a real-life story and characters.

The movie, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018 has received both accolades and backlash.

It won the People’s Choice Award and was named “Best Picture” by the National Board of Review. There has been industry talk of the film’s star, Viggo Mortensen as an Oscar contender for his portrayal of Vallelonga.

However, Mortensen recently came under fire for using the n-word during an event promoting the film. The actor has since apologized with the explanation that he was “attempting to make the point that the extreme, dehumanizing ugliness that this word conjures, the hateful attitude behind it, has not disappeared just because white people generally no longer use it as a racist insult.

Shadow and Act, a website dedicated to cinema, television and web content of Africa and its global Diaspora, called the movie, “a poorly titled white savior film.”

Writing for The Root, Monique Judge also lambasted the film:

It is definitely problematic in that it seems to gloss over the true horrors of the Jim Crow South and just how bad it was for blacks who traveled through and lived there. We never get to see Mahershala Ali, who does a splendid and regal turn as Dr. Shirley, display that gripping fear that black people feel even today whenever they drive down those dark country roads at night—let alone in 1962, when the film is set.

The potential dangers they face are never addressed in the film. Instead, Ali’s Shirley sits comfortably in the backseat, taking in the countryside and even sleeping innocently and comfortably as his white bodyguard—played by the immensely talented Viggo Mortensen—drives him through towns where black bodies likely swung from trees and where at times the only light probably came from burning crosses and white hoods.

“Our family is boycotting the film due to the implicit and the explicit affronts we have endured while critics have hailed the film for its artistic brilliance and its timely juxtaposition to the rise in hate crimes, White Nationalism, and neo-Nazism in the contemporary United States,” said Maxine C. Leftwich, another Shirley family member, via an email.

“This is a feel-good period piece that would make for a good fantasy in the style of Disney circa Dumbo. Despite the fact that it is ‘inspired by a true story,’ the inaccuracies that have been placed front and center are hurtful because they draw a completely inaccurate caricature of a family member that we loved and a misrepresentation of the relationships with other family members,’ she continued.

Maurice Shirley also addresses what he deems are lies in the film:

My brother never considered Tony to be his “friend”; he was an employee, his chauffeur (who resented wearing a uniform and cap). This is why context and nuance are so important. The fact that a successful, well-to-do Black artist would employ domestics that did NOT look like him, should not be lost in translation.

My brother NEVER had a teal blue Cadillac, it was always a black limousine.

The movie, supposedly asserts that he said he had a brother, Maurice, but he “…didn’t know where he was…”

Our Mother died when I was 2 days old, my brother was 9, he never lost touch with me as the movie purports…he was my Best Man when I was married in 1964. Our 2 brothers, Dr. Calvin H. Shirley and Dr. Edwin Shirley, Jr. were in attendance. He attended most, if not all, of the important events in our children’s lives. We saw each other often and talked, by phone, on a regular basis!!

My brother was NEVER beaten up as was so falsely depicted. Insulted, discriminated against, disrespected as a man and an artist, rejected…YES.

No one, EVER, had to teach my brother how to eat fried chicken. Nor would he have allowed “lessons” of such by a white man (given stereotypes). Lest one forgets, our Father was an Episcopal Priest, born in Jamaica and our Mother, likewise was from Jamaica, and when we moved to the States, we were in the South.

Further, to dispel any lies that he had no family or contact with us, I have his ashes — his remains — in my home, per his (and my) wishes.

Yes, this film is from the lens of the Vallelonga Family, and should never have been entitled “The Green Book”. “Green Card” may have been more accurate… Oops, they already made that film, didn’t they!!

That no one in our family was contacted until AFTER the film was made, could never be misconstrued as an oversight.

If the motive was to tell a true and authentic story, either about “The Green Book” and/or

Donald Shirley, they clearly missed the mark!! But that’s what the White Savior has promulgated!!

The family is also calling for a boycott of the film and asking moviegoers to wait to watch until it appears on cable. “This way, it limits the financial gain that the writers/producers will realize from the box office,” says Leftwich.

In a video posted to brother Trace Cyrus’ Instagram Stories on Thursday, November 22, the “Malibu” singer can be seen covering her face as father Billy Ray Cyrus presents her with a turquoise birthday cake.

Among those looking on are Trace, 29, mom Tish Cyrus, Hemsworth, 28, and sister Noah Cyrus, all of whom join in to sing her a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

Billy Ray, 57, shared a photo of the group on Instagram on Thursday. “Thankful for this moment,” he wrote. “My thoughts and prayers with so many hearts that need mended. Peace and love to all.”

Tish, 51, meanwhile, shared a flashback shot of herself on Instagram on Friday, November 23, with her middle daughter as a little girl. “Happy Birthday @mileycyrus. This is def gonna be your BEST year yet! Love you so so much… #26 #happybirthday#loveyou”

The Cyrus vs. Cyrus: Design & Conquer star also shared a newer photo of the pair from the celebration, writing, “Happy Birthday Mczzzzyyyyy.”

Noah, 18, also had a sweet message for her big sister on her big day. “Happy birthday lil girl,” the “Make Me (Cry)” singer wrote on a throwback photo of Miley holding her up on Friday. “I love you endless amounts!”

As for Hemsworth, he took to social media to gush over his love on Friday with an adorable Instagram tribute to the Grammy nominee.  “Happy birthday to my sweet girl,” he wrote on a photo of her hugging a puppy amid a room full of colorful balloons. “You’re more precious than ever. So thankful to have you in my life.”

One week earlier, the Australian actor shared a photo of what was left of the longtime couple’s Malibu home after fire had ravaged the area.

“It’s been a heartbreaking few days. This is what’s left of my house. Love,” he captioned a photo show of the destruction on November 13. “Many people in Malibu and surrounding areas in California have lost their homes also and my heart goes out to everyone who was affected by these fires.”

He continued, “I spent the day in Malibu yesterday and it was amazing to see the community pulling together to help each other out in any way they can. Malibu is a strong community and this event is only going to make it stronger. Thankful for the all the great local guys that helped keep smaller fires out around my property. I love u guys. I love you Malibu. Thank you to all the hero firefighters around California. It’s going to be a journey to rebuild. Stay strong all. To help/donate visit @malibufoundation and @happyhippiefdn.”

Miley’s older sister Brandi Cyrus exclusively opened up to Us Weekly about the loss of the couple’s house at Bumble and Moxy Hotel’s BumbleSpot #attheMoxy launch event in Chicago on November 15. “It, like, just doesn’t seem real,” she told Us. “And unfortunately, Miley is halfway across the world working right now, so for her, she’s probably feeling the worst of it because she feels so helpless from so far away.”

The “Your Favorite Things With Wells & Brandi” podcast cohost, 31, added, “They’re fortunate enough that they have another house to live in, so they’re trying to help raise money for all the people that don’t through the Malibu Foundation … it really is a special place.”

Other celebrities, including Robin Thicke and April Geary, Camille Grammer and Gerard Butler also lost their homes in the fires, which have left more than 80 dead and hundreds of thousands more displaced.

North America’s largest motorist and leisure travel club reported Nov. 19 the national gas price average as $ 2.62. That amount is seven cents less than a week ago and the largest one-week decline in pump price this year.

“The nearly 49 million Americans hitting the road for Thanksgiving will find pump prices similar to last year,” Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson says in a press release. “When it comes time to fill-up during the trip, motorists should keep in mind that gas stations along highly traveled routes may find prices more expensive than in town. Before setting out for the long Thanksgiving weekend, AAA recommends motorists download the free AAA Mobile app to find the lowest gas prices in their area.”

Plus, the AAA app can help motorists make travel arrangements, request AAA roadside assistance and help with other resources.

Here are some tips from AAA to help enhance your driving to get better gas mileage:

  • Accelerate gradually. Avoid jackrabbit starts.
  • Anticipate your stops. When approaching a red light, let your foot off the gas as early as possible.
  • Avoid long warm-ups in the morning. They’re unnecessary and waste fuel.
  • Maintain recommended tire pressure. Low pressure reduces fuel economy and can damage tires.
  • Keep the air filter clean. Clogged filters reduce fuel economy and increase exhaust emissions.
  • Drive the speed limit.

For those flying, the Transportation Security Administration is projecting than 25 million travelers will pass through security screening checkpoints nationally from Nov. 16–26.

Travel experts suggest Americans flying home to gobble some turkey consider these tips:

  • Select your travel times carefully.
  • Get some rest before heading to the airport.
  • Wash your hands, often.
  • Be prepared – pack snacks and water in case you’re delayed.
  • Travel light – If going home just for a weekend, no need to check your luggage. The best option might be packing what you need in a backpack that will fit under seats.
  • Charge your devices – Be sure your mobile devices are fully charged before you leave. Don’t let your phone power down on a plane or train. Make sure you take a portable charger for gadgets.

5 apps for a more successful family vacation

When we say a ‘more successful’ family vacation we basically mean that anything could happen, especially on a family trip. Things can either go really well or terribly wrong. There was a time when things were simpler and life was, well, much easier. However, everything started changing once kids got in the picture. As much as we adore them, when parents take their kids away from their normal day-to-day routine (which can be unbearable sometimes on its own), let’s just say that they feel more free than ever, and that’s not always such a good thing. Free to scream more, to get lost more and to have horrible meltdowns in the most picturesque places. Don’t get us wrong, a family vacation can also be amazing because it’s a time for pure bonding, a precious time that you don’t always get in your everyday life.

Thankfully, in this day and age, parents have apps to pretty much save them from anything that could go wrong. Ok, maybe not anything but if they want to ‘survive’ a family vacation with their kids, there are a few apps that will come very handy. Some are more useful than others and some are just about pure fun, isn’t that what a vacation is all about? Who knows, maybe some parents will even consider going on another family vacation very soon. Everyone needs some technical help from time to time, and that’s where these 5 apps come in.

GateGuru:

GateGuru is the one app you absolutely need when traveling with kids. It will be a real lifesaver in case your flight gets delayed, or god forbid, cancelled. Based on your flight schedule and details, this app will give you real-time updates so you won’t need to waste any of your precious time. You will also get ,major discounts on travel-related features such as car rental and list of shops and restaurants you can find at the airport.

Yuggler:

Yey, you arrived at your destination, congratulations! Now, if you haven’t planned ahead of time (which is probably not the best idea) then you’ll be very thankful for Yuggler. This app is all about fun and keeping your kids busy. Depending on your area, it will offer you suggestions and opinions of things you can do based on other parents’ recommendations and photos. There’s an option to filter according to your kids’ age, the season you’re traveling in and more.

USA Rest Stops:

In the case of a family road trip or just in case you have long drives as part of your trip itinerary, you will com to realize that your kids need to go, A LOT! The number of breaks just go up as they get older. With USA Rest Stop, you will get to find different rest stops across the country so you will always know when the next stop will be. ‘Are we there yet?’ will become a whole lot endurable.

Postagram:

Postagram will let you send your relatives back home an interactive postcard that will get to their phone way faster than a normal postcard would, obviously. Your Instagram snaps will turn into postcards in just one click.

Plates Free Family Travel Game:

Remember that license plate game you used to play with your siblings and parents when driving around the country? Well, it just went from traditional to digital. Have your children search for different license plates in different states, that way you’ll burn another hour or two.

Untangling the Lestrange Family Tree

Following the meteoric success of Harry Potter, the Fantastic Beasts film franchise is forging its own path by uncovering completely hidden depths of Wizarding World lore. While the first movie introduced us to a fresh set of magical characters with Newt Scamander, Tina and Queenie Goldstein, and Credence Barebone, The Crimes of Grindelwald is bringing us firmly back into familiar Potter territory.

The trailers have already promised us a return to Hogwarts, an unsettlingly handsome young Dumbledore, and a human origin story for Voldemort’s favorite Horcrux, Nagini. But one character’s name stands out for potentially giving fans the juiciest insight into the known Potter universe: Leta Lestrange. In the first movie, Leta was seen only in a photo inside Newt’s infamous trunk. But with The Crimes of Grindelwald, Leta Lestrange is poised to become an integral character. But how does she tie into this story and just how is she related to Voldemort’s favourite Death Eater, Bellatrix?

What Do We Know About Leta Lestrange?

In the first Fantastic Beasts film, New York witch Queenie used her Legilimency on Newt to deduce that Leta is a “taker” in their relationship — which doesn’t bode well for her character. However, Newt’s obvious fondness for her could indicate that she’s tragically misunderstood, like the animals he loves so much. Perhaps she’s a victim of her already dark bloodline and signature family values. In The Crimes of Grindelwald, we know she’s engaged to Theseus Scamander (Newt’s brother), but Newt obviously still holds a flame for her. Newt and Leta went to Hogwarts together, and evidently shared a close friendship during their time there.

We know he protected her from getting expelled after she experimented on a student with a Jarvey, taking the blame — and punishment — himself. Given Newt’s tendency to do what’s right, we can presume that she has some redeeming qualities in his eyes. In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment from The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer, the Corvus family tree also seems to reveal that Leta is Credence’s half-sister, after her father, Corvus Lestrange, adopted him. With a connection to Newt, Theseus, and Credence, we can already see the Lestrange family tree sinisterly winding its way around the Fantastic Beasts series. However, the big question remains: Does Leta share the same blood as Bellatrix?

Tracing the Lestrange Family Tree to Its Roots

Let’s take this back to the very beginning. The name “Lestrange” echoes the French phrase “l’étrange,” which literally translates to “the strange one” — which gives you some idea of the unconventional ancestry we’re dealing with here — yet the Lestrange family is British. The Lestranges are one of the oldest pure-blood families in the Wizarding World, known for interbreeding with other pure-blood families just to keep their blood pure — a practice that makes it extremely difficult to trace their roots. In the trailer for The Crimes of Grindelwald, we do get a glimpse of the oldest Corvus bloodline, which leads directly to Leta Lestrange. Per this quick glimpse, the line seemingly dates further back than when records began.

We have no dates of birth for this branch of the family at all until Leta is born sometime between 1 September 1896 and 31 August 1897 (which fans have deduced based on what years she was at Hogwarts). However, one significant detail in the Corvus bloodline, which may lead us back to Bellatrix, is the pure-blood Rosier family. The Rosiers married into the Lestrange bloodline three generations before Leta was born, giving her Rosier blood. Another member of that same Rosier family, Druella Rosier, also married into a separate branch of the Lestrange family much later.

Druella became the mother of Narcissa Malfoy, Andromeda Tonks, and, that’s right, Bellatrix Black (who later, of course, became the Lestrange we all know and loathe). Incidentally, another member of the Rosier family, Vinda Rosier, will appear in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel as one of Grindelwald’s followers. Yet, mysteriously, she doesn’t appear in the branch of the family connected to the Lestranges. Keeping up? If you are, then you must be a wizard.

Turning the Lestrange Blood Black

The second and possibly more familiar branch of the Lestrange family tree is the Radolphus bloodline, which we know begins around the turn of the 19th century. Radolphus Lestrange was a wizard who, from 1835 to 1841, served as Minister for Magic of Britain and Ireland. It’s not until three generations later that Bellatrix finally enters the Lestrange picture by marriage. Bellatrix Black married Radolphus’ great-great-grandson, Death Eater Rodolphus Lestrange, by 1971, bringing together the houses of Lestrange, Black, and Rosier (remember them?). So, in short, Bellatrix doesn’t technically have true Lestrange blood — though she certainly lives up to the ‘l’étrange’ description.

Connecting the Branches

With two disparate family trees, do we have any hope at all of connecting the branches? Well, Zoe Kravitz, the actress playing Leta Lestrange in The Crimes of Grindelwald, may have the answer. In an interview with The Independent, she claimed: “I play Helena Bonham Carter’s great-great aunt.” This gives us some clues: Leta is three generations away from Bellatrix, which should place her in the same generation as Radolphus Lestrange, and could leave room for their meeting at some point in the Fantastic Beasts series.

This, in turn, could provide the crucial overlap we need to connect the two Lestrange family branches. However, if you refer back to the dates in the family trees, Leta was born over 50 years after Radolphus served as Minister for Magic, which throws a Niffler in the works. On a hopeful note, we do have to remember that wizards have much longer life expectancies than Muggles, so generations could overlap in magical ways that would be impossible in our world.

Leta Might Be the Most Important Lestrange Yet

It seems the Lestrange family tree is just as dark and mysterious as the characters within it. However, for Kravitz to confidently say she’s Bellatrix’s great-great aunt, the branches must reconnect somewhere along the line in a way we don’t know yet — and we might find out how in The Crimes of Grindelwald.

We suspect either Leta or a sibling is likely to have married back into the Rosier family during the time when Radolphus Lestrange was alive, forging the family connection long before Bellatrix ever came along, and making her more of a Lestrange than we previously knew. Or perhaps the mysterious Vinda Rosier will hold the key. If this plays out during any of the next four Fantastic Beasts movies, our Muggle hearts will be satisfied. In the meantime, only one thing’s for sure: Pure-blood wizarding families are complicated.

Family of Baby Girl, Who Was Stabbed and Put in Heated Oven, Hold Funeral for the 20-Month-Old

Royalty Floyd, the 20-month-old Mississippi toddler who was allegedly stabbed and then placed in a heated oven by her own grandmother, was laid to rest on Saturday in Clarksdale.

The family of the slain baby girl came together to say their final goodbyes dressed in pink, per request of Royalty’s mother Veronica Jones, who said it was her daughter’s “favorite color” on Facebook.

“You are gone from this earth but you will forever be here in my heart. You were really truly one of the most beautiful creations that God had ever made and I would like to thank God for bringing you into my life,” Veronica wrote ahead of Royalty’s service.

At the funeral, Royalty’s grandfather delivered a tearful eulogy about his late granddaughter.

“She was ‘Big Girl.’ But from the day she was born, she was granddaddy’s baby girl. And she knew it,” Royalty’s grandfather James Harris said, WREG-TV reported.

“I miss her,” Harris continued. “But she’ll always be with me. Always.”

Royalty’s father John Floyd, who is still in shock over his daughter’s gruesome death, also managed to say a few words at the funeral.

“I still find it unbelievable to tell you the truth,” John said, WREG-TV reported.

“And to try and make heads or tails of what happened, it’s still something I can’t comprehend right now. It ain’t soaking in for some reason. I’m thinking one day this is all something that isn’t real,” John added.

On Oct. 15, authorities were called to a residence in the small city of Shaw after a family member discovered Royalty’s lifeless body burnt and stabbed inside a heated oven.

Royalty was alive when her grandmother, 48-year-old Carolyn Jones allegedly placed her inside the oven.

A deputy coroner at the Bolivar County Coroner’s office in Mississippi told The Bolivar Commercial that the young child died “from sharp stab wounds and inhaling the heated air in the oven.”

On the night of the little girl’s death, Carolyn was immediately taken into custody and has been charged with first-degree murder, the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to PEOPLE.

Carolyn is currently being represented by a public defender.  PEOPLE could not immediately reach the public defender.

When contacted by the Associated Press, a public defender declined to comment, saying he’s still learning about the case.

The Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department also told PEOPLE, the child “was living at the residence with Jones at the time of the murder.”

“I’ve been in law enforcement a long time, 26 years almost. Some of the most horrific scenes I’ve seen in law enforcement involve children. Those are some of the— they have an effect on us. We don’t want it to happen, but unfortunately, things like this happen,” Bolivar County Sheriff Kevin Williams said in a press conference on Oct. 16, WREG reported.

When asked for a motive, Williams said, “We are trying to figure that out ourselves. We have no idea at this point.”

Royalty’s mother also created a GoFundMe and raised over $ 6,000 to cover Royalty’s funeral costs.

A potential pest problem resulted in one of the most unlikely discoveries imaginable, and it all started when a Tennessee family called a wildlife management company because something had been breaking into their bird feeders. Members of Alpha Wildlife set up traps after spotting raccoon footprints and asked the homeowner to contact them later.

The next morning the homeowners got an incredible surprise. There, in one of the traps, was an albino raccoon, an animal so rare that you’re more likely to get struck by lightning than to casually stumble upon across one.

Greece with kids: top family friendly islands you should visit

When it comes to booking your next family holiday, there is so much to think about – where it is, how long it will take to get there, what there is to do for the kids, what there is to do for the adults (when you need a stiff drink after looking after the kids for the whole day), how much it will cost, and what the place can offer you. It’s not easy. But luckily, Greece is made up of over 200 inhabited islands that make the perfect family destinations. Here are the five best Greek islands to visit if you have a family.

Rhodes

Rhodes is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece, and well away from the bright lights, bars, and clubs of many of the ‘party islands.’ This island offers 30-miles worth of white sandy beaches which are perfect for building sandcastles, glorious water which is perfect for splashing and learning how to swim, and some of the best all inclusive hotels in Greece. There are kids’ clubs, cafes, water sports and more to keep the kids entertained. And if you fancy taking in a few of the sights, Rhodes’ Old Town is full of cobbled streets, trinket shops, medieval architecture, and relics.

Naxos

The island of Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades Islands and an incredibly popular vacation destination for families with children. With some of the best and longest beaches in Greece, you could spend hours playing and relaxing on the white sand and swimming in the ocean. Because the beaches are the island’s main attraction, there are so many activities – from horseback riding along the beach to water sports, and pedalo boats, you won’t get bored. If you want to tire the kids out, take them for a hike through the beautiful farms and villages throughout Naxos.

Alonissos

The island of Alonissos is located in a remote area of the Sporades and well away from the tourist traps of Greece. Alonissos is perfect for families with slightly older kids who don’t mind spending most of their day checking out what the island has to offer – but don’t worry, the beaches are still incredible. With the huge Alonissos National Marine Park to explore, you can take the kids out for a boat trip or Kayak to catch a glimpse of the rare seabirds and the Mediterranean Monk Seal, as well as dolphins.

Corfu

If you want a mix of fun and the sun – then Corfu is the perfect option. Located in the Ionian Islands, Corfu is an eclectic mix of pebbled coves, luscious sandy beaches, UNESCO-listed Old Town, incredible rock formations and luscious green inland. As well as checking out all of the sights the island has to offer, you can also take the kids to the famous Aqualand Water Park, or take a trip to the open-air cinema.

Milos

Milos is one of the most unusual Greek Islands. Created by underwater volcanic rock formations, the coast of Milos is rife with smooth cliff edges, sea caves and little coves that are perfect for snorkeling and exploring. The longest beach in Milos consists of three different beaches merging together and merges yellow, pink and red pebbles. With warm underwater springs, the sea will always be the perfect temperature for your family holiday.

‘The Haunting Of Hill House’ Helped Me Finally Understand My Own Family

Television in 2018 has frequently seen a different kind of family drama than what’s so often appeared prior; something darker, something more dysfunctional. Dare I say it, something more realistic, in tone, if not in content.

There’s been HBO’s Sharp Objects, a six-part adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name, which, despite being a Southern Gothic murder mystery, one with a side of Munchausen by proxy no less, was frequently tender and frequently the-radiator-is-broken warm. More recently there’s been Netflix’s The Haunting Of Hill House, in which director Mike Flanagan, whose CV is predominantly filled with modern horror films, took the much-adapted Shirley Jackson-penned source material, and used the supernatural as allegory for how trauma can be passed from one generation to the next. And, from the year prior, and again from HBO, Big Little Lies took Liane Moriarty’s brutally frank novel and carved it up into a powerful familial drama that pulled no punches, literally.

It’s kind of fitting that, within an era where the most wholesome family drama, ever, The Cosby Show, really doesn’t feel so wholesome anymore, and wherein your favourite TV mum, Rosanne, has been asked to leave the family home until further notice, the family TV drama has reinvented itself. Even NBC’s smash hit This Is Us, weaves themes like grief, anxiety, miscarriage and rehab throughout the nice bits.

Came For the Scares, Stayed For the Horror

Of them all, The Haunting Of Hill House has resonated with me most. I came for the scares. What kept me enthralled was the horror. The horror of family. The horror of family falling apart, the glue between the joints that keeps units bound, like a piece of furniture you never get around to replacing so instead you just patch it up, stretching, fraying, falling apart the more strained relationships become. It helped me look at my own family in a way that’s proved helpful.

Here’s something I’ve never talked about outside of the therapy session. When I was younger, I spent thousands of hours lying on my bed wondering if my family was normal. In many ways, it seemed like it. We ate dinner on Sundays together. There’s photos of us all on holiday. We’re smiling. I remember lots of laughs. I never didn’t feel like my existence wasn’t not a thing of wonder to them. But there were also the secrets. The things we weren’t supposed to talk about. Snatches of conversation I could never quite understand. People crying in parts of the house I knew I couldn’t enter. And, thick in the air, like smoke-filled carriages in the days you could smoke on trains, the dense, stifling, overwhelming feeling that something wasn’t right. I spent a lot of my time growing up trying to solve a puzzle, a sprawling multi-generational mystery, which ultimately led only to more pieces I couldn’t find.

Fear and Family

The bent-neck lady ghost in The Haunting of Hill House.

I’ve never seen a ghost. I was at a friend’s house once that was supposed to be haunted. For years they’d told me of the things they’d seen there. I never saw anything, but something grabbed me there once. Grabbed me in a way that felt physical. Squeezed my shoulder. It could have been a muscle spasm. It could have been my brain, filled with stories of apparitions and orbs, wanting to believe, playing tricks on me. I’m no neurologist, and I can’t understand a lot of how my brain works, even when I’m not sat supping tea in supposedly haunted houses. But within a few episodes of watching The Haunting Of Hill House, I’d unquestionably seen a ghost, if a ghost is an echo of the past, which I think is what they most likely are.

I spent so much of my childhood scared. Nobody is to blame for that. Nobody wanted that for me. The road to hell is paved with good intentions as they say. But I’d certainly never seen that sort of fear featured within TV drama before. HBO’s Six Feet Under came along in my teens and not so much scratched — not so much an itch, even — but levelled out a twinge of an idea that maybe I wasn’t completely alone. But it didn’t knead the tissue deep enough. What it did do was ignite a spark inside me that made me wonder whether it wasn’t my family that made me think we weren’t normal, but the families I saw on TV. Sometimes on a Sunday, when Channel 4 showed repeats of The Waltons, I hoped their stupid house would collapse upon them and kill them all. Years later, when I learned the child actors in the show weren’t paid with money, rather with baskets of muffins, I felt quite bad about that.

As Long As There Is Love

Crains-Haunting-of-Hill-House
The Crain family in The Haunting of Hill House.

I saw it in the faces of The Haunting of Hill House’s Crain family though. The bewilderment in the children’s faces, their underdeveloped brains not being entrusted with the truth, or at least not all of it, them all striving to plug the gaps, failing pathetically. I saw it in the father, him desperately pleading to ‘fix’ problems in the present that had begun decades before. I saw it in the mother, the downturned facial muscles that accompanied the revelation that, despite having done everything she could to protect her brood, it still hadn’t been enough. Because if we’ve learned anything about the chaos of human existence, it’s that we can’t protect ourselves from life.

This isn’t a sad story. This is a story about how The Haunting Of Hill House confirmed the growing belief in me that my family was normal, at least in the sense that ‘normal’ has little business being used in the same sentence as the word family. Because as well as fear in those faces, I saw love. And in turn, it reminded me of the love I have for these people I’ve been thrust into a relationship with; no agreement, no escape. Not only that, but as much as this sounds like the opening line in the worst power ballad ever conceived, if you’ve got love, at least you’ve got something to embolden you in your fight against the demons.

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar Plan to Hire 25K at Oct. 17 Hiring Event

The chain of discount stores known for saving everyone a few dollars is looking to put dollars in people’s pockets.

Dollar Tree, Inc. is hosting its third annual nationwide hiring event on Oct. 17 with plans of hiring 25,000 new associates.

Interviews will be held at every Dollar Tree and Family Dollar store in the U.S. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time. The company currently has over 15,000 locations and can be found in all 48 contiguous states.

Both full- and part-time roles are available, including positions such as store manager, assistant store manager, cashier and stocking associate. And, of course, the company is jumping on the seasonal hiring train, so temporary roles for the holidays are open.

The job listings don’t specify pay rates, but Glassdoor offers some insight: Store managers earn an average of $ 44,806 a year, assistant managers earn an average of $ 41,205 a year, and cashiers and stockers earn an average of $ 8.00 per hour.

The company’s benefits program includes a 401(k) plan, medical plans, paid time off, a wellness program, life insurance, disability insurance and an employment assistance program aimed at maintaining a positive work-life balance.

A Dollar Tree press release says there is potential for new employees to be promoted into a higher role later on, adding that in 2017 nearly 40,000 associates moved up the company’s  ladder.

This is a one-day only hiring event, but don’t get too stressed if you can’t make it in person. Interested applicants can also apply online at www.dollartree.com/careers or www.familydollar.com/careers.

If you do plan on attending the event, here are some tips on how to stand out from the competition. And while you’re there, maybe pick up some cheap, Halloween goodies so you don’t find yourself in a decimated candy aisle at 8 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Trends 2 Watch: Family Room Design Ideas

Home Trends’ Style Editor Jo Alcorn shares some family room design ideas.

SEATING Family rooms need adequate seating for reading, relaxing and hosting movie nights. In this space, I chose an oversized sectional and complemented it with a side chair and a modern rocker. When arranging your seating, be sure to also add hard surfaces such as a large coffee table and side tables to hold snacks and drinks.

PERSONAL TOUCHES Large scale frames featuring artistically taken family photos make a great statement over a sofa and are a great alternative to a gallery wall.

ACCESSORIZE ME Don’t shy away from accessories in a family room. Find a way to incorporate family treasures, bowls and lush throw cushions to give the space an elevated look.

TO SERVE AND PROTECT A high quality area rug goes a long way by protecting your valuable hardwood floors. Choose a subtle color in an interesting pattern (to hide possible stains) for a beautiful, timeless look. – Text by Jo Alcorn
