South Korean cabbies are lighting themselves on fire in protest of a ride-sharing app

Taxi protest

It’s no surprise that taxi drivers aren’t exactly the world’s biggest fans of ride-sharing apps that offer customers cheap fares and the convenience of hailing a ride with just a few taps of a screen — services that have gone on to eat a big chunk out of the industry as a whole around the world. Still, every now and then the intensity of opposition from the taxi industry can surprise you — and, in the case of recent protests in South Korea, downright shock you with the extreme measures that some cabbies are taking to let their feelings be known.

Tens of thousands of taxi drivers in the capital city of Seoul have been protesting for months now against the launch of the ride-sharing service Kakao T Carpool, an Uber-like app the drivers say would exacerbate their already meager standard of living. Some protesters are even taking things so far that they’re committing suicide, by setting themselves on fire.

Deputy Died From Friendly Fire In California Bar Gun Battle

(Ventura County Sheriff’s Department via AP)

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — A sheriff’s deputy who died in a mass shooting at a Southern California bar was shot five times by a gunman who massacred 11 others, but the officer was killed by friendly fire, authorities said Friday.

Sgt. Ron Helus was fatally shot in the heart by a California highway patrolman who had joined him in a firefight with the gunman at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks on Nov. 7, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said.

“It was just a tragic detail that unfolded so rapidly, in my view it was unavoidable,” Ayub said. “They were ambushed almost immediately.”

Ayub said the fatal shot did not diminish the heroism shown by the officers. The CHP officer was not identified, but is a 9-year veteran of the force who is on leave.

Investigators did not offer any more insight into what drove Ian David Long, 28, to storm the country and western bar at an event for college students.

Long took his own life after the gun battle with the two officers.

Long threw smoke grenades into the group of revelers, obstructing what they could see, before he opened fire.

Then he used a flashlight with a laser sight attached to his .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol as he fired.

Panicked revelers smashed windows to flee, dived under tables and piled on top of each other in an effort to dodge the gunfire.

The first two officers to arrive at the scene, Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer, saw at least 100 people fleeing the bar.

Long had gotten into a tactical position and fired on them when they entered, killing Helus. The 29-year veteran of the department was close to retirement.

Should the Oscars Fire Host Kevin Hart Over His Homophobic Jokes?

Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast

Hosting the Academy Awards is an infamously thankless gig, exposing the emcee to intense scrutiny from the culturati and critics, typically with little to gain professionally in exchange. It’s gotten so bad that earlier this week, in response to the fact that dozens of celebrities had turned down the Academy’s requests to preside over this year’s ceremony, The Hollywood Reporter proclaimed hosting the Oscars “the least wanted job in Hollywood.”

That was, of course, mere hours before the Academy announced that comedian Kevin Hart had taken the job.

Hart actually wanted the job very much, and has been on record saying as much over the years. He announced that he was “blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time” when he shared the news on Instagram. And now that he’s gotten it, he’s already witnessing part of the aforementioned reality of the gig: the scrutiny.

Support Groups Aid People Impacted by Shooting and Fire Tragedies

Beginning this week for 8 weeks, Kaiser Permanente is offering free crisis support groups to communities impacted by the Borderline Bar and Grill mass shooting and the devastating Woolsey wildfire. Licensed mental health professionals will lead the sessions, which will be held in the California cities of Thousand Oaks, Ventura, and Woodland Hills.

The shocking Borderline shooting occurred on November 7 in Thousand Oaks, killing 13 people, including the suspect. The next day, the destructive Woolsey fire ignited near Simi Valley, eventually spreading through parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties. From loss of loved ones to ravaged homes, those affected are trying to put the pieces of their lives back together in the aftermath of these tragic events.

“These communities are dealing with multiple layers of tragedy — there has been an onslaught of trauma, destruction and grief” said Anna Garcia, PsyD, a licensed marriage and family therapist and the director of Behavioral Health at Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center. “Many people in the Ventura area are also still dealing with the effects of last year’s Thomas fire. These events strike at the very core of people’s sense of safety and equilibrium.”

The weekly support groups focus on teaching participants self-care skills to help them recover from trauma, work through their grief, and begin moving forward in their lives. Attendees also receive assistance connecting them to other resources and services.

“We can’t control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond — how we can use negative experiences to make us stronger and more resilient,” said Garcia. “Providing a place for people to come together and share their feelings helps them process what happened.”

Borderline Tragedy Support Group in Thousand Oaks
Kaiser Permanente, 145 Hodencamp Road, Suite 100, Thousand Oaks. Thursdays, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Begins Novemer 29. Facilitated by licensed marriage and family therapists Nicole McCarthy and Diana Bennett. Call 805-449-3442.

All the ‘Game of Thrones’ theories and speculations in ‘Fire and Blood’

TwitterFacebook

George R. R. Martin’s new book, Fire and Blood, recounts the 300 years of Targaryen history before the events of Game of Thrones. But it also has plenty of potential fodder for theories directly tied to the time period we know and love on the show.

But they’re also very well hidden.

“There are a few that are definitely important, but I’m not going to flag them,” Martin told EW in regards to whether the book contained hints. “Readers will have to find them and puzzle out whether they’re hints or red herrings.”

As a in-universe textbook by an Archmaester named Gyldayn, we can’t take everything stated in Fire and Blood as totally accurate. He’s writing down history that happened centuries before he was alive, and a lot of accurate information has been lost to time. Read more…

George R.R. Martin says Dany should read Fire and Blood…and is that a GoT spoiler?

George R.R. Martin says Dany should read Fire and Blood…and is that a GoT spoiler?

George R.R. Martin says Dany should read Fire and Blood…and is that a GoT spoiler?

The seven-plus year wait for The Winds of Winterthe sixth novel in the epic Game of Thrones series—has many fans feeling restless, but George R.R. Martin is attempting to soften the blow with a new book set within the A Song of Ice and Fire universe. The new book, called Fire and Blood, is a 700-page history of the Targaryen family, written in the voice of Archermaester Gyldayn. In a 2017 blog post, Martin revealed the book begins with Aegon the Conqueror overtaking and unifying the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and covers 150 years of Targaryen rule.

Between Fire and Blood and the still-untitled Game of Thrones prequel series, we’re about to learn more about this mysterious world than ever before. While Martin understands that fans are frustrated he hasn’t finished The Winds of Winter yet, he promises Fire and Blood contains crucial details relating to Game of Thrones. In fact, in a new video from Esquire, Martin says Daenerys Targaryen would definitely benefit from a trip to the citadel to review the book—err, Archermaester Gyldayn’s manuscripts.

“This is a book that Daenerys might actually benefit from reading, but she has no access to Archermaester Gyldayn’s crumbling manuscripts. So she’s operating on her own there,” Martin teases. “Maybe if she understood a few things more about dragons and her own history in Essos, things would have gone a little differently.”

Could Archermaester Gyldayn’s manuscript contain the key to successfully defeating the White Walkers and landing Dany on the Iron Throne? Or could Martin even be hinting that Dany will ultimately be defeated in the upcoming eighth season? It seems we’re definitely going to have to give Fire and Blood a thorough study while we wait for the final season of Game of Thrones to drop in April.

‘Several’ People Dead After Active Shooter Shouts ‘All Jews Need to Die’ and Opens Fire at Pittsburgh Synagogue

Eight people are reportedly dead after a lone shooter shouting anti-Semitic phrases opened fire Saturday morning in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

via NYDN:

“All Jews must die!” the gunman shouted before opening fire on dozens of congregants inside the Tree of Life synagogue, according to KDKA-TV.

Police confirmed multiple casualties at the house of worship in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood, and ordered local residents to stay inside. KDKA-TV reported the eight fatalities, with authorities confirming at least a dozen people were shot — including three police officers.

The suspect, wounded and crawling, gave himself up after a gunfight with cops who were forced to crouch behind their police cars for protection during a wild shootout, the television station reported.

“My stomach is churning,” said lawyer Jeffrey Pollock, 56, who lives four doors down from the synagogue. “I went to get my mail … and saw about a dozen police cars with their lights on.”

He said there was a weekly Shabbat service on the synagogue’s main floor and a bris scheduled for the basement. The mother of one girl attending the services told CNN that worshippers fled to the basement for sanctuary as the gunshots continued on the floor upstairs.

“I’m just sad,” said Jeff Finklestein , president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. “I really don’t know what to tell you. My heart goes out to all these families. This should not be happening, period. This should not be happening in a synagogue.”

He estimated the service held as many as 60 worshippers on a typical Saturday.

Sabbath services at the “traditional, progressive and egalitarian” synagogue were scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. Cops quickly flooded the chaotic area around the house of worship, with ambulances seen lining up on the surrounding streets.

President Trump weighed in on the latest mass shooting via Twitter, making a political point in addition to sending his condolences.

“Watching the details from the shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue,” said Trump. “Many will tweet today that we need gun control but as always this not the day to do so. We must offer thoughts and prayers and talk about that another day. Believe me.”

The NYPD quickly began deploying heavy weapons teams, including the officers from the Critical Response Command and the Strategic Response Team, to houses of worship across the city. Sector cars will also make additional visits to the religious outlets.

The killings came after a year where the Anti-Defamation League reported a record 57% uptick in anti-Semitic incidents nationwide.

It has been a wild week. Don’t let the madness deter you from getting out to vote in these midterm elections.
