‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel Falls Short of First Film’s Success, But Still Wins Weekend Box Office

(LOS ANGELES) — “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” crawled, slithered and flew its way to the top of the weekend box office with a $ 62.2 million opening in the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The latest offering from the Harry Potter multiverse fell short of the opening of the first film in the Warner Bros. series, 2016’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which debuted with $ 74 million in a similar November release and went on to earn $ 234 million in the U.S. and Canada.

But all the Harry Potter films have had a broad international reach, and “Fantastic Beasts” had a hearty worldwide weekend gross of $ 253 million, according to the studio’s estimates.

“Clearly it’s a huge phenomenon globally,” said Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros.

Last week’s top film, “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch,” was second with $ 38.1 million, bringing its domestic tally to $ 126 million for Universal Pictures after two weekends.

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” 20th Century Fox’s Freddie Mercury biopic, is still rocking, taking third place with $ 15.7 million for a total of $ 127 million.

“Fantastic Beasts,” the second film in the series of Potter prequels written by J.K. Rowling and starring Eddie Redmayne, Johnny Depp and Jude Law, had a budget of $ 200 million. Its reviews were largely lackluster, with critics saying Rowling’s magical world is wearing thin after 10 films.

Globally the first nine films have earned $ 8.5 billion, a total that this one’s worldwide take will inflate.

“This is yet another example of a movie whose opening weekend skewed heavily into the international territories,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. “This happens a lot with bigger franchise movies. For many of these blockbusters, it’s the international component that comes in and saves the day.”

In the U.S., Warner Bros. is hoping young devotees who are out of school will keep “Fantastic Beasts” in flight through Thanksgiving.

“It’s a big week coming up,” Goldstein said. “Friday is one of the biggest movie days of the year.”

It will have a major challenger in Disney’s “Ralph Breaks The Internet,” which opens Wednesday, as does “Creed II.”

“Fantastic Beasts” continues a year of high points and hits for Warner from a diverse string of movies, including “The Meg,” ”Crazy Rich Asians,” ”The Nun” and “A Star is Born.”

“Warner Bros. is on a roll that every studio would envy,” Dergarabedian said.

In this weekend’s smaller-budget openings, “Instant Family” starring Mark Wahlberg brought in $ 14.7 million for Paramount Pictures, and “Widows,” the latest from “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen, earned $ 12.3 million for 20th Century Fox.

Overall, the weekend was down 14.5 percent from the same timeframe a year earlier, when “Justice League” made for a major pre-Thanksgiving weekend.

Here are estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday also are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” $ 62.2 million.

2. “Dr Seuss’ The Grinch,” $ 38.1 million.

3. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” $ 15.7 million.

4. “Instant Family,” $ 14.7 million.

5. “Widows,” $ 12.3 million.

6. “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” $ 4.7 million.

7. “A Star Is Born,” $ 4.3 million.

8. “Overlord,” $ 3.8 million.

9. “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” $ 2.5 million.

10. “Burn The Stage: The Movie,” $ 2.3 million.

The First 5 Things to Do in ‘Fallout 76’

Well aren’t we a sight, vault dweller? Judging by the bed-head you’ve just woken up in Vault 76, all hung over but ready for the grim, life-on-a-knife-edge realities of the apocalypse in Fallout 76. Oddly, our security cameras also show that you’re wearing nothing but underpants and a party hat. Not your Vault-Tec issued jumpsuit, nor a chink of armor. No weapon beyond your fists and harsh language, either. A party hat. Wonderful.

We like hi-jinks, too, but you’ve got a legion of hard life lessons waiting outside that 20-ton door. Fortunately, we’ve already done a few laps of Appalachia and are here to help you with what really ought to happen next. Which is…

You should try to get along with the Scorched. Be the bigger man. Bury the hatchet.
You should try to get along with the Scorched. Be the bigger man. Bury the hatchet.

Step 1: Get Hard

Fallout 76 is like playing the previous Fallout games on the Hardcore difficulty setting. A lack of food, water, and rad medicine will kill you, plus everything you carry — even ammo — has weight that’ll slow you down. What you really ought to do in the early game, then, is focus on your Strength — the stat that governs how much you can lug about and how hard you can belt things with other things.

Because the simple fact of the matter is you’re not much good at anything right now. That said, the melee approach to combat is the perfect fit for your Cro-Magnon-like abilities. During hour one of Fallout 76 you’re too inept to mend firearms, too weak to carry around the junk needed to make ammunition and you probably smell funny, too. A diet of irradiated dog food and dirty water can do this to a person. Just own it.

Bottom line: you’ll want a decent melee weapon with which to stove heads in. That’s why you need to open your map and…

There's a cabin here. It's isolated. We're helping!
There’s a cabin here. It’s isolated. We’re helping!

Step 2: Get Comfy

There’s a more or less perfect starter location called “Isolated Cabin” that’s hidden off the beaten track, south-east(ish) from Vault 76. Open your map and find the red icon that looks like a lumber mill to your south. Place a marker due east of that mill, then cross the road to find it. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you involuntarily mutter to yourself “bluuurgh this crap heap can’t be what they mean, surely.” Trust us, it’s actually awesome.

Sure, Fallout 76 offers you the ability to build your own house, but you currently lack the know-how and raw materials to fashion such a casa. Fortunately, the Isolated Cabin has all the post-American Dream essentials: a pickup truck with ammo and a free hatchet for turning mutated freaks into kindling. Oh, and a water pump, a cooking station, a tent, and a weapons workbench.

Once you’ve “axed” the mutant dog residents to leave, focus on the workbench as it’s the most important fixture here. Make a habit to return to this (or any other) bench to hit X to select “scrap items” and then press Y to “scrap all junk”. This process will quickly streamline your inventory space by shredding otherwise useless detritus into raw, craft-friendly materials. This then frees you up to engage in yet more rampant kleptomania and the cycle repeats from here.

Players playing nice in a Public Event. For now...
Players playing nice in a Public Event. For now…

Step 3: Get Sociable

Don’t let the prospect of PvP frighten you into hiding away from your fellow vaulties. Fact one: from level 1 to 4 you are utterly impervious to trolls. Fact two: even when you do get off your Learner’s Permit at level 5, it’s incredibly difficult for some malevolent tool to end you, no matter their level in the game. All non-dueling player damage is scaled down to mere mosquito bites. You have to give the aggressor The Business back in order to kick off a brawl (so go to your settings and turn on ‘Pacifist’ to remove any chance of that, Ghandi).

With all that info in mind, go be around people. This isn’t a community of CoD kids. We’ve found other vaulties to be genuinely excited to tell us when they’ve found cool items, or to muck in on a shoot-out with large mobs of…uh, mobs. Buddying up can also be an incredibly lucrative experience – as in actual XP and money – so go join public events. Check your map every five minutes or so to spot them and fast travel to any that look like they have three or four players hanging around. Strength and sweet rewards in numbers.

Shanty sweet shanty.
Shanty sweet shanty.

Step 4: Get Camp

No. We don’t mean: increase your Flamboyancy stat. (Though that is actually a lot of fun to do – the Atomic Shop has some truly outrageous fashions to model.) Before walking out the door of Vault 76 you should have scooped up a C.A.M.P. device. Basically, this thing will let you convert your junk materials into a highly defendable cubby house. Better yet, you can insta-redistribute your structure anywhere else in the world, thanks to a small bottlecap fee and some sort of magic that requires a shedload of suspension of disbelief.

Even if you’re a stabby-and-shooty-only type, you really need to look into knocking together a crib. Construct an elevated position that’s bristling with machine gun turrets and save on stimpacks by making a bed in which to recoup lost HP. Slap in a workbench to shred stuff into junk and an item storage box to take the weight off your shoulders. Better yet, fast-traveling to your camp carries no fee. Plonk it somewhere safe and central, then fan out into Appalachia in a series of short scouting missions.

Step 5: Get Overseer-ing

Understand that Fallout 76 is a weaponized time-waster. Walk five minutes into an empty field and the secondary objectives tab on your Pip-Boy will look like War and Peace in no time flat. Compounding this “problem” is the fact that Bethesda’s level designers are some of the best environmental storytellers in the industry – you’ll constantly spot objects that tell sordid, structureless little tales. Things you’ll probably want to forget.

This is great news if you tend to sip at your games, but anybody who likes to chug ought to know that it’s in their best interests to smash out the main quest early. The hefty XP gains the main thread offers are insanely better than any other activity.

By the end of that chain you’ll also have a damn good array of gear at your disposal — more than enough attitude-adjusters to solve the millions of side-quests or unruly players out there. We know it’s tough to stay focused, but keep your head down until you emerge (for a second time) on the other end of The Overseer’s story arc.

How the World’s First Male Supermodel Escaped an Abusive Doomsday Sex Cult

Chasing Beauty

Frederick Von Mierers, a deeply tanned cult leader with a shocking crown of platinum blond hair, spoke to his followers through their television sets. At two in the morning, Von Mierers would be beamed out into the universe courtesy of cable television. In clips from these extremely ’80s appearances, the former model shills mail-order cassettes and spouts new-age gibberish, his eyes getting impossibly larger and more urgent with each nonsense aphorism. It’s hard to imagine just how strange it would all seem without context, an insomniac flipping through the channels, stumbling upon this exaggeration of a man who claimed to be an alien from the star Arcturus.

Von Mierers believed in impending doom—that he and his fellow aliens had been sent here to help earthlings, an intergalactic team of emergency responders. As the leader of the group Eternal Values, it was Von Mierers’ responsibility to find the others, and teach them about their true origins and noble calling. Like so many cult leaders, he appealed to his followers’ vanity, telling them that they were special enough to literally save the world. Von Mierers, who believed in a “master race,” courted attractive young people. His Nantucket house guests recall being sent out to scour the beach for good-looking recruits, handing out invitations to the finest physical specimens they could find. John Richards Hoyt was 16 when the 30-something Von Mierers approached him at the beach. In a new documentary, Welcome to the Beyond, Hoyt recalls his introduction to the cult leader who would alter the course of his life. “Freddy said to me, you’re different,” Hoyt says, speaking directly to the camera. He and his friends would go to Freddy’s parties for the free beer; for a moment, at least, Hoyt was using him.

In Welcome to the Beyond, which premiered at Doc NYC on Tuesday, director Brent Huff deep-dives into Hoyt’s double life. It helps that Hoyt, or John as his family calls him throughout the film, was born into such a stereotypical American existence.

‘This Is Us’ Recap: Jack and Rebecca Have Sex for the First Time

This Is Us 3x07 Recap
Milo Ventimiglia as Jack Pearson and Mandy Moore as Rebecca Pearson on ‘This Is Us.’ Ron Batzdorff/NBC

Jack and Rebecca took a major new step in their relationship during the Tuesday, November 13, episode of This Is Us, titled “Sometimes.” Zoe also opened up about abuse in her past.

On the Road

Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) set out for Los Angeles a week after meeting. Jack chose not to talk to Rebecca about his time in Vietnam or anything else, really. The two traveled across the country and grew closer every mile of the way. They slow-danced during one stop, where Jack revealed that he had never cried.

While staying in a motel along their journey, Rebecca climbed into Jack’s bed, and the pair had sex for the first time. They continued to sleep together throughout their trip, and Rebecca noticed Jack’s nightmares. But he continued to shut her down when she asked about the war. Rebecca wished to know more about Jack and knew she wanted to be where he was. He later confessed that he didn’t want to bring the war into their romance.

In California, Jack went to see the parents of a solider in his squad who was killed by a land mine. He took full responsibility for the death because he let his guard down, but the couple assured Jack it wasn’t his fault. Meanwhile, Rebecca visited the record label that had expressed interest in her, but they told her she was “Pittsburgh good.” Jack requested that she sing her song for him, and he cried as she sang about overcoming mistakes. Then, she told her new beau, “Let’s go home.”

This Is Us 3x07 Recap
Melanie Liburd as Zoe and Justin Hartley as Kevin Pearson on ‘This Is Us.’ Ron Batzdorff/NBC

Good Dads and Bad Dads

Zoe (Melanie Liburd) and Kevin (Justin Hartley) made it to Vietnam, where they planned to go to the fishing village where Jack was stationed. Kevin discovered that the necklace his father gave him was a popular souvenir, which discouraged him.

Zoe told Kevin her father lived in China, and she didn’t want him to know she was nearby. When Kevin pressed her, she refused to elaborate. Zoe got sick, so the couple returned to the hotel.

Kevin admitted to Zoe that he was falling in love with her, and after she reciprocated, she told Kevin that her father sexually abused her as a child. Therefore, she shut him out of her life, even as he tried to make amends.

A Helping Hand?

Jack asked Nicky’s (Michael Angarano) commanding officer if he could take his brother back to his squad to straighten him out, but the leader told Jack it went against protocol to put siblings in the same outfit. The commanding officer later brought Nicky to Jack’s village and told him he had two weeks to work on Nicky, who expressed frustration that Jack didn’t just leave him in his own squad “to rot.”

This Is Us airs on NBC Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.

But Forky, a spork decorated with pipe cleaners and googly eyes, isn’t happy-go-lucky like the rest of the characters in the teaser. “I don’t belong here!” he exclaims, breaking the circle and causing a pile-up collision of toys.

“Somebody get him before he pokes an eye out,” Woody says off-screen.

Toy Story 4
Still from Pixar’s newly released ’Toy Story 4’ teaser trailer.

In the YouTube description, Pixar offers a synopsis for the new movie: “Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called Forky to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.”

Toy Story 4 is directed by Josh Cooley, who also helmed the Pixar short Riley’s First Date?, and produced by Inside Out producers Jonas Rivera and Mark Nielsen. Hollywood newcomer Stephany Folsom was tapped to write the script after Parks & Recreation alum Rashida Jones and writing partner Will McCormack opted out of the project. Toy Story 4 is slated for theatrical release on June 21, 2019.

A. Barry Rand, Among the First Black CEOs of a Publicly Traded Company, Dies at 73

Addison Barry Rand, known fondly as “Barry,” passed away on Thursday. Rand was an influential business leader who held many high-profile corporate positions. In fact, Rand rose to become Chairman and CEO of Avis Rent A Car Inc. in 1999, the third African American to assume the helm of one of the nation’s 500 largest publicly traded corporations.

Rand had a 31-year career at Xerox at one point heading the company’s then-$ 5-billion marketing group. During his tenure at Xerox, he went on to manage $ 18 billion in revenue and 70,000 employees in over 150 countries.

Rand was highly regarded for his business and marketing acumen. In 1968 he earned his B.S. in Marketing from American University. He first joined Xerox as a sales trainee, citing the company’s “contagious freedom of expression” where he could be “Barry Rand and not somebody’s idea of what I should be.”

He rose from sales representative to executive vice president for worldwide operations. While at Xerox, he was instrumental in ensuring minorities and women had every opportunity for advancement at the company. Under his leadership, Xerox became the most diverse company in the Fortune 50.

He left Xerox in 1999. ”Barry was one of the most loved and respected leaders here, and not just because he succeeded against the odds as an African American,” said Anne M. Mulcahy, a-then Xerox executive vice president told The New York Times in 1999.

When Rand left Xerox to head Avis, he became one of the first African Americans to achieve such a position at a Fortune 500 company and one of the first to lead a publicly-traded company. According to The New York Times, another business icon, Ken Chenault, recommended Rand to Avis.

“Avis offers a great opportunity,” Rand said at the time in a January 2000 interview with Black Enterprise magazine. “It is a Fortune 500 company. It has an international dimension. It is a company that fits my skill set…”

In 2009, AARP tapped Rand as its new chief executive. He was attracted to AARP’s dedication to fighting for the rights of older Americans. He said back then, “AARP’s resources are immense, but so are the goals that it seeks to achieve. The fight will not be easy, but if I’ve learned one thing in my career, it’s that nothing worthwhile ever is.”

The business leader also served as the volunteer chairman of Howard University’s board of trustees. At Howard University, he established the Helen Matthews Rand Endowed Scholarship. Named for his mother, a teacher and principal, the scholarship provides full tuition and a laptop to students pursuing a degree in teacher education. Recipients must make a two-year commitment to teaching in an inner-city or urban environment upon completing their degrees.

Rand is survived by a wife, daughter, and son.

5 things you didn’t know about flying first class

Whether you’re a frequent flyer who regularly travels for business, or if you just fly once a year for your family vacation, you know that flying can be one of the most stressful and tiring experiences of your journey. When flying economy, you have little leg room, odd next door neighbors, super long queues and pretty basic commodities – Yep, the toilet will always smell! But there is another part of the plane that you barely ever see: First Class. Unless you’re really lucky, of course. Here’s what it’s like to fly in first class.

Many people use it to network

We’ve all seen the scenes in movies where the two unsuspecting victims meet next to each other on the plane, share a pleasant hello and then a cliche moment brings them together – cut to the ending and they’ve become BFF’s and set up a meeting in New York to go over a business proposal together next month. Okay, it doesn’t really work like that, but many people do use first class to network with other like-minded. Because the people who fly in First Class normally have more money and work for Fortune 500 companies, they’ll all have something in common – business. In fact, Virgin Atlantic have found that one in five of their First Class customers had done business with someone they had met during their first class flight. Some airlines are now even creating specific networking flights!

You get even more vacation time

If you’re used to flying economy, you’ve probably seen the First Class passengers stroll along past you with their fast-track boarding passes and saunter onto the airplane while you crouch on the floor in a crowded airport lounge. Yep, the first class passengers not only get to board the plane first – but they also get to depart the plane before everyone else too! This means they can get ahead of the game, and be the first in the queue for customs and baggage reclaim. Ultimately, this means they get even more vacation time because they’ll be out the airport doors and onto the beach while you’re still stuck on the plane!

It’s super comfortable

Okay, we all know the deal. Economy flights are in NO WAY comfortable. With little-to-no legroom, a next door neighbor who is sitting way too close to you and using your armrest, and absolutely no way to stretch out and have a good kip; a long-haul flight can be an absolute killer. But long-haul First Class flights? They’re a completely different story. In nearly every first class area of any airplane, the seats are a world apart. Quite literally. With individual seating, each passenger gets their own little area of the plane with a reclining chair (which makes an extremely comfortable bed), a sliding divider which shuts you off from the other passengers, and your own personal TV. The nine-hour flight will just be like your average evening at home.

You can actually get work done

If you’re traveling on a business trip and need to perfect your presentation before you reach your destination, it will be pretty impossible to do so if you sit in economy – because you two choices; have the ability to feel your legs and not get work done, or get work done and lose all circulation. The choice is yours. However, in first class, working is no issue. In fact, your plane journey will probably be more comfortable than your own office! In your First Class seat, you’ve got your own individual table with ample writing space, multiple power sockets to ensure your laptop never runs out of battery, and most now have WIFI! Who needs an office?

You don’t need to be rich to fly first class!

There’s a common misconception that you need to be super rich to afford seats in First Class. As much as it is true buying first class seats through the airline will cost you a hefty sum, there are ways to try and get a first class upgrade for a cheaper price (or even for free!). First and foremost, you need to go by the premise that ‘it doesn’t hurt to ask.’ You’ll be surprised how accommodating airlines can be when it comes to upgrading their passengers – if you just ask! The best way to do this is to always be polite and friendly to them when you go to the check-in desks, and if they have something available, they may bump you up. If you don’t ask, you don’t get!

Ever wondered what it’s like to fly first class? Here are a few pointers to whet your appetite, but why not try it out for yourself?

Olympic Committee Takes First Step to Decertify USA Gymnastics in Wake of Nassar Scandal

The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) took the first step Monday that could lead to decertifying USA Gymnastics and revoking the organization’s status as America’s representative for gymnasts in national and international competition.

Gymnasts – including Olympian Aly Raisman – have called on the USOC to take action against USA Gymnastics in the wake of repeated scandals following revelations that it failed to act on initial reports of sexual abuse by team doctor Larry Nassar. TIME reported last week on what it would take to decertify USA Gymnastics.

Sarah Hirshland, chief executive officer of the USOC, filed a complaint about USA Gymnastics to the USOC board. Once a complaint is brought to the USOC board, a hearing will be held including, in this case, members of USA Gymnastics and the athletes’ advisory council. The panel would then make a recommendation about whether to revoke recognition as gymnastics’ governing body. If another organization were to come forward to be recognized by the USOC, it would need a different name and would have to adhere to the bylaws of the USOC and start to gain membership of local gyms. If an alternate organization is not available to take over for USA Gymnastics, then gymnasts would temporarily compete under the umbrella of the USOC.

“I believe this is a significant step forward that is necessary for the overall health and well-being of the sport and its athletes,” Raisman tweeted in response to USOC’s action. “There are so many amazing, talented and kind-hearted people in this sport, and it’s time for them to lead us into the future!”

In an open letter to the gymnastics community, Hirshland did not provide a timeline for how long the process would take, but the current gymnastics season is on hiatus after the world championships last week in Doho, Qatar. The U.S. women won the team title and Simone Biles earned a record fourth world championship gold in the individual all-around event.

Hirshland’s decision was prompted by an ongoing sexual abuse scandal at USA Gymnastics involving Nassar, who is serving up to 175 years in prison on sexual abuse charges. According to documents obtained by the Indianapolis Star, USA Gymnastics was alerted to Nassar’s abuse, which gymnasts say occurred at national training camps and at international competitions, but did not act in a timely manner to remove Nassar from his position.

There is also evidence that members of USA Gymnastics worked to devise a cover story to explain Nassar’s absence when he was finally asked not to attend competitions in 2015.

USA Gymnastics said it was “carefully reviewing” the complaint made by the USOC – and said the current board “inherited an organization in crisis with significant challenges that were years in the making.”

“The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) issued a letter today to USA Gymnastics initiating actions pursuant to Article 8 of its bylaws, which could ultimately result in the de-recognition of USA Gymnastics as a National Governing Body (NGB). This action is in accordance with their bylaws, which grant the USOC the power to review all matters relating to the continued recognition of an NGB. USA Gymnastics is carefully reviewing the contents of this letter and is evaluating the best path forward for our athletes, professional members, the organization and staff.

USA Gymnastics’ board was seated in June 2018 and inherited an organization in crisis with significant challenges that were years in the making. In the four months since, the Board has done everything it could to move this organization towards a better future. We immediately took steps to change the leadership and are currently conducting a search to find a CEO who can rebuild the organization and, most importantly, regain the trust of the gymnastics community. Substantial work remains — in particular, working with the plaintiffs and USA Gymnastics’ insurers to resolve the ongoing litigation as quickly as possible. We will continue to prioritize our athletes’ health and safety and focus on acting in the best interests of the greater gymnastics community.”

Read USOC CEO Sarah Hirshland’s letter to the gymnastics community in its entirety:

To all USAG gymnasts and the gymnastics community in the United States:

You began your journey in the sport of gymnastics for dozens of different reasons, but all of them trace back to gymnastics, and sport, being a positive influence in your life. It is supposed to be fun, to challenge you, and to teach you lessons about dedication, teamwork, excellence and overcoming adversity.

And while each of you has overcome adversity in different ways, some facing unimaginably terrible situations, everyone now faces the difficult reality of belonging to a national organization that continues to struggle to change its culture, to rebuild its leadership and to effectively serve its membership.

You deserve better.

So today I’m writing to let you know that the United States Olympic Committee has taken the first steps to revoke USA Gymnastics’ recognition as the National Governing Body for gymnastics in the United States and offered USA Gymnastics the option of surrendering its recognition voluntarily.

You might be asking why now? The short answer is that we believe the challenges facing the organization are simply more than it is capable of overcoming in its current form. We have worked closely with the new USAG board over recent months to support them, but despite diligent effort, the NGB continues to struggle. And that’s not fair to gymnasts around the country. Even weeks ago, I hoped there was a different way forward. But we now believe that is no longer possible.

You should know that revocation is subject to a process clearly outlined in the USOC Bylaws, and that process does not guarantee a particular outcome.

You’re no doubt wondering what this means for you and the gymnastics community. Until the process is completed and a final determination on USAG’s status is made, we will work to ensure that gymnastics training and competitions will continue as usual. I do not know how long the process will take, and we will make every effort to proceed quickly.

So I don’t have a perfect answer today. This is a situation in which there are no perfect solutions. Seeking to revoke recognition is not a decision that we have come to easily, but I believe it is the right action. In the short-term, we will work to ensure that America’s gymnasts have the support necessary to excel on and off the field of play. We are building plans to do just that no matter the outcome of the revocation process.

In the long-term, it will be the critically important responsibility of the recognized Gymnastics NGB, whether the existing organization or a new one, to lead gymnastics in the United States and rebuild a supportive community of athletes and clubs that can carry the sport forward for decades to come. We are prepared to identify and help build such an organization.

So, what’s next?

Strictly speaking, there is a process that must be followed based on the USOC Bylaws that lay out how we recognize, and revoke recognition, for an NGB. We have filed a complaint. A review panel will be identified, a hearing will be held, a report will be issued and a recommendation will be made. Then the USOC board will vote to continue to recognize USAG, or to revoke that status.

But that doesn’t really answer the meat of the question. You need to know what happens to gymnasts and your clubs if USA Gymnastics’ membership is revoked by the USOC. We are developing both a short- and longer-term plan and will communicate it as soon as we can.

The clearest answer I can provide is that gymnastics as a sport will remain a bedrock for the Olympic community in the United States. Young people will continue to participate, refine their techniques and have fun. Our Team USA athletes will continue to inspire us through their incredible accomplishments. We will ensure support for the Olympic hopefuls who may represent us in Tokyo in 2020.

And, over time, gymnastics clubs around the country may become members of a new organization that lives up to the expectations of the athletes and those that support them, their parents included. This would take time and a lot of hard work from many of us, and many of you. I know that collectively, we are up to the task should that assignment be given at the outcome of this process.

Today is only the beginning of an important process for gymnastics in the United States. The path is not crystal clear, but our motives are. So, we move forward, committed to ensuring the type of organization each gymnast and the coaches, trainers and club owners who support them, deserves.

Thank you for your support, and your contributions, as we collectively chart our path forward. And please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with your ideas and suggestions. I have set up an email address where you can reach me and my team. It is gymnastics@usoc.org.

This Kid From Brooklyn Could Return America to Chess Dominance for the First Time Since Bobby Fischer

Fabiano Caruana did not start playing chess in Brooklyn, New York when he was five years old because his mom thought he’d be a future grandmaster, or that he’d one day play for the World Chess Championship, just like fellow Brooklynite Bobby Fischer did back in the early 1970s. No, Caruana’s mom thought chess would calm him down and keep him focused in school.

“I was having trouble with concentration,” Caruana, 26, tells TIME, “and the idea was that maybe chess would help with that. It was more of a remedy.” Before long, this cure for little-kid hyperactivity took Caruana much further than his Lego buildings and origamis ever could. Within a year, he was winning tournament games against kids who were in junior high school and older. “His first instructor told us he was trying to teach her chess concepts,” says Caruana’s father, Lou. “We knew he was special.”

Starting on Friday in London, Caruana will become the first American since Fischer, who won the world chess title in 1972 and held it until 1975, to challenge for the World Chess Championship. Curuana faces Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, the world chess champ since 2013, in the 12-game match that will be played over three weeks at The College, a 10,000-square-foot venue in the city. Chess rarely attracts much mainstream attention in the United States. But chess pundits expect that a Caruana victory could spark an explosion in chess interest America hasn’t seen since Fischer’s heyday. “You do like your winners, don’t you?” says Mark Crowther, the U.K.-based founder and editor of The Week In Chess.

In March, Caruana earned the right to face Carlsen by beating out seven other top players to win the Candidates Tournament in Berlin. “Fabiano has the power to be better than Carlsen,” says Crowther. “There have been very, very few players you can say that about. I honestly don’t know who’s going to win this match. It’s a total toss-up.”

Caruana forged a circuitous path to representing the U.S. on chess’ grandest stage. His family decided to take Fabiano out of school and move to Spain when he was 12 in order to compete in more high-level tournaments and train with top instructors. Since his mother is Italian, he could compete for Italy’s chess federation. “It was not an easy decision,” says Caruana’s father Lou of taking his son out of school. “The plan was always to do it for a year or two and see how it works out. Is he loses a year of school, so what? He’s smart and can catch up. We could always correct things if it wasn’t going in the right direction.”

Initially, Caruana didn’t support the plan. “I wasn’t really keen on the idea of going to Europe when my parents suggested it,” he says. “I had friends in Brooklyn; I had a life in Brooklyn. But once I started playing chess pretty much full time, it just became a normal part of life. Me and my dad would just go from tournament to tournament in different countries. I missed out on social things in school and everything, but I was able to see the world as a young kid, which is very rare.”

Lou, a former data processing consultant who also earned income from real estate holdings, says he spent as much $ 100,000 on chess travel and instruction for his son in those early years in Europe. The investment paid off: Before his 15th birthday, Caruana became the youngest chess grandmaster, at the time, in the history of both Italy and the United States. Caruana admits early success swelled his head a bit. “You don’t think you need the work, which is always a mistake,” Caruana says. “I would take excessive risks and do crazy things to win a game, and commit suicide.”

Caruana overcame his growing pains, however, and started earning a living playing chess. At the same time, he eyed a return to the United States. In 2014, he turned in a dominant performance at the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, beating out Carlsen and other elite players to win the tournament. The Sinquefield Cup is named after Rex Sinquefield, a financier who pioneered the first index stock funds back in the 1970s – and has invested north of $ 50 million over the past decade to building one of the world’s premier chess clubs in St. Louis. With St. Louis now a budding epicenter of global chess, Caruana moved back to America in 2015, and switched federations from Italy to the U.S. Caruana now lives in St. Louis. “For a chess player,” Caruana says, “it’s the best place to be.”

To prepare for his match against Carlsen, Caruana spent some time this summer training at Sinquefield’s country home in Missouri. Besides playing hours of chess with fellow grandmasters, he jogged and shot hoops and played tennis to keep in peak physical shape. “Chess requires a lot of stamina,” says Caruana. “You’re sitting down and you’re playing six, seven hours at a time. You’re burning a lot of calories and you can easily get mentally tired. If your physical form is not good, then you’re likely to crash at some point.” Caruana doesn’t stick to a strict diet, though he does try to avoid excessive sugar, to avoid the high and inevitable come down.

In the weeks leading up to the World Chess Championship, Caruana has trained in Spain, where he’s done yoga and swam in the Mediterranean to keep his head clear. He’s also played games for up to eight hours a day. “The goal is get you thinking about chess 24/7 in preparation for the match,” he says. “It’s playing quick games, slow games, anything that will get you in that mode where you calculate very quickly. Your mind is working in the best possible shape.”

Caruana knows that Americans are blessed with plenty of sports and entertainment options. So why would even casual observers of chess have a stake in his three-week match with Carlsen, never mind those who don’t play the game? “It’s sort of like boxing or MMA,” Caruana says. “It will be a fight that is blow for blow, with each of us trying to get the upper hand, trying to impose our will on the other guy. It’s not a physical sport. But if people are into these one-on-one duels, chess is in a way similar to that.”

How to write a bestselling novel by Cecelia Ahern (who wrote her first aged 21)

Her first bestselling novel P.S. I Love You was published in 2002, and she has since written 15 books. For this week’s Writers Bloc series, Cecelia Ahern reveals the secret to producing one novel a year

Cecelia Ahern’s first novel P.S. I Love You was published when she was 21 years old. Now 37 and living in Dublin, Ireland with her husband and two children, she has since written 15 books, which have been translated into thirty languages and have sold more than twenty-five million copies in over forty countries. ROAR, ‘a collection of stories for every woman’, is published by HarperCollins, £12.99.

You have been a full-time writer for most of your adult life. What is your routine?

My writing hours have adjusted over the years to work with my life. I wrote my first novel 15 years ago during the night from 10pm to 4am because it suited me to work that way then and that’s when I felt inspired and alive, but it’s not a practical time to be working when you have other commitments during the day. I now write from 9am to 5pm, four days a week. I begin a novel in January, it’s due in June, I edit during Summer and it’s published in Autumn. As I write a novel a year, it’s a very disciplined and precise schedule but thankfully it has worked for me and changing my hours hasn’t meddled with my creativity; if anything, having a routine has made me more focused.

I leave my house to go to work in an office. I used to work from home but I felt it was important to have a creative space separate from my living environment. It means that I focus better when I’m at work, but it also means that there is a separation between my life and work. When I lock the door to my office, it’s time to stop working and return to life, and when I step into the office, it’s a lovely free space to create, with a calm atmosphere that allows time and freedom for my mind to explore. With boundaries I can properly be in each moment as I should be without feeling conflicted.

My stories begin as an idea. I ask myself, who would find themselves in this situation and then the idea inspires the characters. The development of my characters then help the idea and story to grow so they both feed off one another. One of the most exciting parts of being a writer is that moment of coming up with an idea. I get an adrenaline buzz in that instant when I feel I’ve created something original and unique, and I’m eager to make a note of it and research it so that I don’t lose the thought. I keep a notebook of ideas because no matter how fresh I think they are, I do forget them and also because it’s not always the right time to begin the story.

Cecelia Ahern writes one book a year

How many drafts do you tend to write, and do you edit as you go or prefer to push through to the end and work through any problems in rewrites?

I write the zero draft for myself first. I find that in my excitement to just get the story out of me, I do a fast first draft that is full of heart but full of holes. I write first with the heart and then go back and write with the head. I go over it and over it and then send the second draft to my publishers. They provide a general overview at first, pointing out the larger structural issues and then I write another draft. It’s on the third draft when it has come together as it should be that we get into the nitty gritty. I work on a fourth draft and then we move to copy edits, page proofs etc. I don’t put pressure on myself about making the first draft perfect, I need to see how the story comes together first and if it’s working for me, before perfecting every detail.

I plot the story before I write – and of course this helps develop it further as well as acknowledging the problems and needing to solve them. Some ideas are great ideas but they don’t have characters or aren’t meaty enough to be novels, and so some ideas have been with me for years before I’ve found the missing part that can help bring them on. Others can develop very quickly, and I write them within months of thinking of them. I tend to come up with different ways to structure a novel, like an overall concept, but I don’t have a story. Every idea is different.

I plot the novel first, writing out in point form the characters and storylines, however most of my favourite pieces are the spontaneous sentences that flow as I’m writing. I can plot storyline but I can’t plot how I’m going to phrase it or what tone it will take, and so it’s important to me that I plot but also allow the story to naturally unfold and evolve as I write. A story is a living, breathing, ever changing thing and as characters evolve, so does the plot, as the plot thickens, so do the characters and that’s not always possible to predict.

What is your favourite part of the process?

My real thrill is in writing the first draft. That’s the one that comes with the rush of adrenaline and emotion, the one that is fresh and new and exciting and I allow the pen to take over and go with the flow. Finishing the first draft is an amazing feeling, such a rush of adrenaline and emotion and relief, too. Polishing for me is hugely important, but it’s the part that I have to use the other side of my brain for. It feels like a more mechanical process. I find the first 25,000 words of any novel the easiest because the first ideas are flowing, everything is being set up, it’s new, and the story is wide open before you. After that first section I usually pause, look ahead at how much further I have to go and wonder if I can do it. Then I remind myself that I feel like this during every single book and I have to push on through to the finish line.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring writer, what would that be?

When we’re reading we are drawn not just to the plot and characters but how an author tells a story, so the voice is an important one to get right. I believe it’s important to be authentic and original. Write what moves you, what intrigues you. Write with the voice that you think with because that internal voice is yours, it’s original, because nobody thinks like you, and therefore will immediately set you apart from others.

Feast your eyes on the first 8K video shot in space

NASA 8k footage

Depending on how serious you are about your home entertainment, you might not even own a 4K TV yet. If that’s the case, you can hardly be blamed, as the vast majority of television programming hasn’t adopted the format yet either, but that’s not stopping NASA from pushing the envelope with a video so high-res that you probably don’t own a screen that can display it at its full resolution.

In a new post, NASA shows off what it says is the very first 8K video footage shot in space. At over three minutes long, there’s a whole lot to see here, but don’t expect to fully appreciate the stunning detail without a seriously high-res display at your disposal.

Netflix is releasing 3 films in cinemas first for a good reason

Netflix has famously resisted traditional film distribution, where films hit the silver screen first.

It’s something that’s bothered the film establishment, most notably when Cannes Film Festival told the streaming giant in 2017 it would need to show in French cinemas if it wanted to be considered for future festivals.

Netflix fired back by pulling out of Cannes this year. But now, it’s releasing three of its films in select cinemas for a short run before people can watch them on the service. Why? Awards.

Seann Walsh seen out for the first time since awkward run in with Neil Jones who banned wife Katya from speaking to him

SEANN Walsh was seen for the first time since his awkward run in with Neil Jones at a red carpet bash on Monday night.

The Strictly star, who was caught snogging Neil’s wife Katya earlier this month, headed out alone near his west London pad today – after The Sun revealed Neil had banned his spouse from speaking to him.

Seann Walsh has been spotted for the first time since his awkward run in with Neil Jones
BackGrid

The comedian, 32, was all smiles as he enjoyed some downtime and grabbed a coffee.

After refuelling, Seann – who was booted out of Strictly on Sunday night – whizzed off on his bike.

The outing came after we revealed tensions were running high between Seann and Strictly pro Neil at the Pride of Britain awards earlier this week.

The dancer, 35, is still hurting from wife Katya’s betrayal after she was pictured kissing Seann during a night out at a London pub earlier this month.

Seann even took his bike for a spin
BackGrid
The comedian was all smiles as he enjoyed some downtime after being booted out of Strictly
BackGrid

And taking a stand, Neil blocked his dancer spouse from speaking to love rival Seann at the bash on Monday, telling her: “We’re not on Strictly now, don’t you dare.”

A source said: “Neil and Katya were half way up the carpet when Seann arrived.

“Katya said she was going to say hello but Neil held her back and told her ‘We’re not on Strictly now, don’t you dare’.

“An organiser foresaw a potential bust-up so held Seann back to ensure they were kept apart.

“Neil is still clearly very unhappy with Seann, but Katya clearly doesn’t want to cut ties.”

Seann clearly didn’t let the snub ruin his night as he was later seen enjoying the attention of fans on the red carpet and waitresses inside the venue.

Melania Trump’s First Lady Wardrobe Speaks Louder Than She Does

Carlo Allegri/Reuters

During her first solo tour through Africa, Melania Trump channeled every study-abroad student, posing in front of the Egypt’s pyramids or Kenyan elephants in ‘grammable photo opps. The First Lady told reporters that she wanted to “show the world that we care,” with her travels through Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, and Egypt.

“The world” (mostly Twitter) did notice something—the pith hat she donned in Nairobi. For many, the accessory referenced colonialism and oppression, especially in light of her husband’s reported opinion of Africa being made up of “shithole countries.”

When asked about the accessory during a press conference in front of the Sphinx, Trump echoed the irked statement her press office made after she donned a controversial “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” jacket while visiting immigrant child detention facilities in June. “I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear,” she said.

Megyn Kelly Is Cancelled. But She Never Should Have Had the Job in the First Place

In her 14 months as an NBC morning-show host—a role that has come to an abrupt end—Megyn Kelly found a number of ways to alienate viewers. She kicked off Megyn Kelly Today, last September, with an ill-considered joke about Will and Grace turning one of its fans gay and a question about plastic surgery that instigated a year-long feud with Jane Fonda. In January, she was forced to publicly apologize after appearing to endorse fat-shaming: “When I was in law school, I was gaining weight,” Kelly told fitness advocate Maria Kang. “I said to my stepfather, ‘If you see me going into that kitchen one more time, you say, “Where you going, fat ass?”’ And it works!” That same month, a fired staffer described a “toxic and demeaning” environment on the show. But Kelly dug a hole she couldn’t climb out of on Tuesday, questioning whether blackface Halloween costumes were actually racist.

“What is racist?” the host wondered aloud. “You do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface for Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was OK just as long as you were dressing as a character.” The social media backlash was swift, with celebrities like W. Kamau Bell, Padma Lakshmi and Adam Rippon joining the fray. On Wednesday’s episode of Today, Al Roker pulled no punches in a statement about Kelly’s comments: “While she apologized to the staff, she owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the country,” he said. “This is a history going back to the 1830s minstrel shows, to demean and denigrate a race wasn’t right.” Soon after, Kelly apologized to viewers, but the damage was done. “Megyn Kelly Today is not returning,” an NBC News spokesperson announced in a statement on Friday. “Next week, the 9 a.m. hour will be hosted by other Today co-anchors.”

Who could have predicted such a debacle? Oh, just about anyone who was familiar with Kelly’s pre-NBC history. In 2010, as a Fox News host, her well-publicized obsession with the marginal New Black Panther Party was an early hint at her views on race. Months after launching her popular show The Kelly File, in 2013, she caused an uproar by insisting that Santa Claus and Jesus were both white. A few years later, she denounced a so-called “thug mentality” within black communities. The list of race-baiting moments goes on.

So, to many, the salient question today isn’t “How could this have happened?” so much as “How did Megyn Kelly get a $ 69 million deal with a broadcast network in the first place?” The answer says a lot about viewers’ short collective memory: Kelly got her first taste of bipartisan approval during the most recent presidential election cycle, when she grilled Donald Trump over his comments demeaning women. He hit back (remember “blood coming out of her wherever”?), and the more she stood her ground, the more liberals warmed up to her. Kelly underscored her potential appeal to mainstream audiences by speaking out about sexual harassment she endured at the hands of Fox News chief Roger Ailes. By 2016, she was a Vanity Fair cover star. The NBC deal followed early the next year, with the short-lived Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly debuting in June 2017.

Megyn Kelly Today was plan b for the network’s new investment. Although its ratings never compared with those of its predecessor—an hour of Today hosted by Kelly’s reportedly lower-paid colleagues of color, Roker and Tamron Hall—the birth of the #MeToo movement last October gave Kelly a purpose that she clearly wasn’t finding in segments on parenting, cooking and celebrity gossip. She found her niche in championing women, famous and not, who came forward to accuse powerful men of sexual misconduct, and grounding her anger on their behalf in her own experiences at Fox News. For a TV personality who’d effectively erased past controversies by standing up to sexist men, these emotional interviews were the equivalent of playing her hits.

Kelly stepped back into the role of maverick feminist—never mind that her record had always been spotty on women’s issues that did not speak directly to Megyn Kelly. (She has cast aspersions on the equal pay movement, defended demonstrably false anti-abortion propaganda and told campus sexual assault activists to “toughen up, buttercup.”) The same girl-power veneer that kept her supporters in the mainstream media from reckoning with the Fox News version of Kelly in 2016 once again obscured the less savory aspects of her personality. Until it didn’t.

It wouldn’t have taken an investigative reporter to uncover all the reasons why she was the wrong choice for NBC, a broadcaster that presumably had no intention of spending a fortune on a host who would end up offending and alienating a substantial portion of its diverse audience. But the cost of the network’s myopia isn’t just monetary. In failing to weigh the risks of hiring someone like Megyn Kelly, NBC has also lost something priceless: viewers’ trust.

Jennifer Garner Is All Smiles as She Steps Out in N.Y.C for the First Time Amid New Romance

Jennifer Garner was all smiles strolling through the Big Apple.

The 46-year-old actress stepped out on Thursday in New York City for the Fast Company Innovation Festival in which she spoke about her baby food company Once Upon a Farm. This is her first public appearance after news broke that she is “casually dating” CaliGroup CEO John Miller.

Garner looked chic in a blue-green coat, white scarf and strappy blue heels as she bundled up against the city’s cool weather.

A source told PEOPLE on Thursday that “dating is just a natural step” for Garner after finalizing her divorce from Ben Affleck.

“Although the divorce was just finalized, Jen has considered herself single for a long time,” the insider said. “Jen will always care about Ben and help him be the best dad. She was very ready to move on though.”

“She seems very excited about the future and is in a great place both personally and professionally,” the source added.

They took the kids to see Hello, Dolly! on Broadway in mid-July, starring family friend Victor Garber, and spent Easter together in Hawaii where Affleck was filming.

Miller was also previously married before filing for divorce from celebrity violinist Caroline Campbell in 2011.

He and Campbell are parents to two school-age children, a daughter and a son. The businessman is CEO and chairman of holding company CaliGroup. The company owns the CaliBurger chain, which boasts a special robotics technique that flips burger patties.

Russian Soyuz Rocket Lifts Off for First Time Since Failure

(MOSCOW) — A Russian Soyuz rocket has put a military satellite in orbit, its first successful launch since a similar rocket recently failed to deliver a crew to the International Space Station.
The Russian military said a Soyuz-2 booster rocket lifted off from the Plesetsk launch facility in northern Russia Thursday.
A Soyuz-FG rocket carrying NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos’ Alexei Ovchinin failed two minutes into the flight on Oct. 11, sending their emergency capsule into a sharp fall back to Earth. The crew landed safely, but Russia had suspended all Soyuz launches pending a probe.
Investigators have linked the failure to an element jettisoning one of its four side boosters from the main stage that apparently had been damaged during the rocket’s final assembly on the cosmodrome.

Cristiano Ronaldo Speaks Out for the First Time About Sexual Assault Allegation: ‘My Lawyers Are Confident and I Am, Too’

(MANCHESTER, England) — Speaking publicly for the first time since being accused of rape, Cristiano Ronaldo defended himself against the allegation and said Monday he is confident the truth will come out in the case.

The soccer superstar has been accused of rape in the United States. Kathryn Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit last month in Nevada claiming Ronaldo raped her in his Las Vegas hotel room in 2009. Police also reopened an investigation into the allegation at her request.

Ronaldo’s attorney, Peter S. Christiansen, issued a statement on Oct. 10 denying wrongdoing by his client.

“I’m not going to lie in this situation,” Ronaldo said at a news conference ahead of a Champions League match between his Italian team, Juventus, and former club Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday. “I’m very happy. My lawyers, they are confident and of course I am, too. The most important, is I enjoy the football, I enjoy my life. The rest, I have people who take care of my life.

“Of course, the truth is always coming in the first position.”

Christiansen declined comment. Attorneys Leslie Mark Stovall and Larissa Drohobyczer, representing Mayorga, did not immediately respond to messages.

Ronaldo previously had confronted the allegations in an Instagram video posted Oct. 3, hours after the suit was filed.

“Fake. Fake news,” the five-time world player of the year said at that time.

Christiansen has branded documents that led to media reports about the rape claim “complete fabrications” and asserted that the encounter in a Las Vegas hotel penthouse bedroom was consensual. Attorneys for Mayorga have challenged Ronaldo’s legal team to prove that documents are false.

Ronaldo joined Juventus in the offseason from Real Madrid. He has scored five goals in nine matches for the Italian champion, and two in three matches since being accused of rape.

Asked about his status as a soccer role model, the 33-year-old Ronaldo said Monday: “I know I am an example. I know, 100 percent. On the pitch and outside the pitch. So I am always smiling, I am happy man. I’m blessed that I play in a fantastic club, I have a fantastic family, I have four kids, I am healthy. I have everything.”

“So the rest, it doesn’t interfere on me,” he added, before saying with a smile: “I’m very, very well.”

Ronaldo is returning to Old Trafford for the second time since leaving United to join Real Madrid in 2009. The first time was for the second leg of a Champions League last 16-match between United and Madrid in 2013, when he was given a standing ovation by United fans and introduced as the “magnificent seven” — a reference to the number he had at the English club.

Ronaldo scored the winning goal that night, eliminating United.

The Portugal forward has won the Champions League five times, once with United in 2008 and then at Madrid in 2014, ’16, ’17 and this year.

“I remember what it was like in Manchester. My history, we won lots of trophies, cups, leagues and the Champions League. I remember the support of the fans. (Then-United manager) Sir Alex (Ferguson) is someone I will never forget. He was a huge lift in my career.

“When I knew we were playing Manchester United, it was a huge thing for me.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have received their first baby gift, and it’s very appropriate

You’ll never guess what it is…

Less than 48 hours after the announcement that Meghan Markle is pregnant and the couple have already received a gift for their first child.

Kensington Palace announced on Monday that the baby is due in spring 2019 – although people already reckon they’ve worked out Meghan’s due date.

While the royal family found out the news on Friday, it’s thought that Meghan shared her pregnancy with this person a couple of months before.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had a jam-packed first day of their royal tour in Sydney, meeting Invictus games representatives as well as visiting a zoo and the Royal Opera House.

At the beginning of the day the pair were presented with a cuddly kangaroo by Australia’s Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, to which Meghan exclaimed, ‘Our first baby gift!’

Later they also received a tiny pair of Ugg boots that we’re sure will come in handy – although Meghan already has a gift for her future daughter, which she’s had for years.

At Taronga Zoo the couple also met a pair of baby koalas that had been named after them in honour of their nuptials, according to The Sun. We’re jealous.

‘We genuinely couldn’t think of a better place to announce the upcoming baby, be it a boy or a girl,’ Harry said of the baby news.

Watch this space for more pictures and updates from Meghan and Harry’s tour as we get them.

Our exclusive trailer for Jonathan paints a picture of his life, which takes a turn when he falls for a wonderful young woman (Suki Waterhouse). That should be great, except his brother also falls for her. One further complication: both brothers live…

In June, first lady Melania Trump took a trip to McAllen, Texas — one of the epicenters of the family separation crisis occasioned by the policies of her husband’s administration. Getting on and off the plane, she wore an army-green jacket with these words written on the back in white: “I really don’t care. Do U?”

‘First Man’ soars as tale of Neil Armstrong and stoic heroism

If stoic heroism sounds pretty good right about now, “First Man” lands at a welcome time. The “La La Land” reunion of Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle produces a soaring, IMAX-worthy look at Neil Armstrong’s life in the decade leading up to the moon landing, providing a reminder that fulfilling John F. Kennedy’s vision was as much about grit, guts and determination as any feat of engineering.

What Neil Armstrong Biopic First Man Gets Right and Wrong About the Moon Landing

There are two ways of talking about the historical accuracy of First Man, the Damien Chazelle biopic of Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong, starring Ryan Gosling: the easy way and the hard way. The hard way is to explore all of the things the movie got right — which is a very, very long list. The easy way is to discuss the things it got wrong, which you could count on one hand — literally.

It is one of the many triumphs of First Man that it tells an exceedingly complicated story of an exceedingly complicated man — a story populated by dozens of other important figures — and does so almost entirely without eliding or streamlining the truth, or worse, inventing things completely. A lot of the credit for that accuracy goes to the diligence of James R. Hansen, the author of the First Man biography, and Josh Singer, who adapted the book for the screen. It says something too that the few mistakes First Man does make are relatively small-bore stuff.

One of those blunders appears early, in the very first moments of the movie, during the scene of a harrowing flight Armstrong took in an X-15 rocket plane in 1961. The scene is true to what happened: Armstrong’s violent ride into the stratosphere, more than 20 miles above the ground, which took a nasty turn when he nearly couldn’t return to Earth as the plane began “ballooning,” or bouncing off the top of the atmosphere rather than slicing back into it. The scene is true too to the claustrophobic look of the X-15 cockpit. What isn’t so true is when we look out the window at the wispy carpet of clouds just below Armstrong’s wings — a lovely enough scene, except that at 120,000 feet, Armstrong was at about twice the altitude at which even the highest clouds form. Minor glitch, surely, except that coming in the film’s opening act, it doesn’t inspire confidence.

The good news is you have to wait a long time to have your confidence shaken even a little again. That happens during the flight of Gemini 8 — Armstrong’s first trip into space, and nearly his last, as the spacecraft spun wildly out of control. This time the problem was in the cockpit, which was rendered with exacting accuracy except for the fact that someone on-set really needed to give it a quick scrub-down first.

All of America’s early spacecraft — Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, the lunar module — were single-use ships. They had never been flown before the day of launch, and would never be flown again. As a result, they all had a certain straight-from-the-showroom look to them. According to Jim Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13, they even had something of a new-car smell. In the movie, however, Gemini 8’s interior has a Millennium Falcon feel, with grime and even a bit of rust on some of its switches. The same is true later when we see the interior of the lunar module in which Armstrong and crew-mate Buzz Aldrin flew down to the lunar surface.

“By the time we got back to Earth, the spacecraft did look pretty dirty,” says Al Worden, command module pilot of the Apollo 15 lunar mission, who was a consultant on the movie. No doubt, but not at the first moments the astronauts strapped in, and certainly not at all for Gemini 8, a mission that had to be aborted early and lasted less than eleven hours from liftoff to splashdown.

The movie strays from the truth too when Armstrong gets the news that he has been tapped to command Apollo 11, and, that if the mission goes as planned, he will become the first man on the moon. Gosling’s reaction — little more than a nod — was probably awfully close to how Armstrong took the news. But how he learned that news was wrong.

Apollo astronauts were assigned to their three-man crews sometimes years in advance. Indeed, in many cases they were on a three-plus-three flight rotation. If you flew on Apollo 8, you would serve as a back-up crew member on Apollo 11, and would return to the cockpit for Apollo 14. What no one knew at the point in the program in which the relevant scene in First Man takes place is exactly what the crews would do on their missions, since every flight was dependent on the success of the previous mission. For the two-plus years leading up to Apollo 11, the betting was that the first moon landing would not come until Apollo 12, 13 or even 14. It was only the surprise success of Apollo 8 — the first lunar orbit, which flew just eight months before Armstrong’s Apollo 11 — that accelerated the program.

Finally, poignantly, there is First Man’s tenderest scene, which takes place on the lunar surface, when Armstrong spends a few minutes alone at a formation called Little West Crater, something he did do in the brief two and a half hours he spent exploring the moon. (Significant spoilers follow.) The most shattering experience in Armstrong’s life, the one from which all of his later-life reserve may have flowed, was the death of his two-year-old daughter, from brain cancer, shortly before he applied to NASA’s astronaut program. In the scene following her death, we see Armstrong open his desk drawer and put away a tiny bracelet that spells out his daughter’s name, Karen, in lettered beads. On the moon, he opens his hand to reveal the bracelet and drops it into the crater, where it will rest forever.

There is no historical record that Armstrong did any such thing, but some signs suggest he did. Astronauts flew with what was known as a PPK, or personal preference kit, which contained any sentimental or otherwise non-regulation items they wanted to bring with them. Those items may have been personal, but the astronauts were required to file a manifest detailing precisely what their PPK contained. Armstrong’s has since gone missing.

“Hansen asked Armstrong for his PPK manifest and he said he lost it,” says Singer, “which was very unlike Neil, who was a pack rat.” Hansen then asked Armstrong’s sister, June, if he might have left something of Karen’s on the moon. Says Singer: “She teared up and said, ‘Oh, I dearly hope so.’”

Audiences could be forgiven for hoping so too. Perhaps the most important item on the long, long list of things First Man gets right is the privately borne pain Armstrong seemed to carry with him his entire life. It would be nice to think that if he found a way to honor that pain, all alone at a spot no human being had ever been before, it at last brought him some much-deserved relief.
