Hedi Slimane Gives First Interview At Celine

PARIS – Hedi Slimane has given his first interview since his nomination at Celine to French daily newspaper “Le Figaro.” The famously discreet designer spoke to journalist Laurence Benaïm in Tuesday’s issue of the newspaper.
The interview comes days before his debut collection at Celine, which will be unveiled on Sept. 28 during Paris Fashion Week.
“I am delighted to come back to a French house, a tradition, professions, ateliers,” said Slimane. “Paris is the best at ‘handmade,’ which is incredibly chic. Beyond the virtuosity of the ateliers, this savoir-faire is due to a state of mind, a way of working, the immediate understanding of a model, a particular feeling that can only be found in Paris.”
He explains that an additional atelier has been added to the 17th century mansion that houses Celine’s headquarters, the Hôtel Colbert de Torcy in the 2nd arrondissment, which will be dedicated to the creation of Celine’s first men’s wear line.
Upon arriving at Celine, Slimane chose to rebrand the maison by taking the French accent off the house’s name.
“It’s in no way about marking my territory, quite the contrary,” said the designer, adding that it was his way of “putting the church back at the center of the

FASHION TIPS:

How Tiger Woods Won His First Title in 5 Years

All year, Tiger Woods knocked. Tournament after tournament, the 14-time major champion contended for titles. Back in March, he finished tied for second and tied for fifth at the Valspar and Arnold Palmer Invitational, respectively. On the final day of the British Open in July, Woods ascended to the top of the leaderboard before a few hiccups cost him. At the PGA Championship in August, he thrilled in the final round, soaring up the standings despite driving the ball inconsistently. He finished second. Sunday ratings for the season’s last major jumped 69%.

All that was left was the victory.

On Sunday, at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, it came in what was once typical Tiger fashion. His sizzling start on Saturday — six birdies in the first seven holes — gave him a cushion; he entered the final round with a three-shot lead. Dressed in his Sunday red, victory red, Woods struck the fairways he needed. Almost everything went his way. On the 15th hole, his tee shot landed to the right of a water-lined green: his shot stayed out of the drip, barely. Things got a bit jittery on the 17th, as after two straight bogeys his lead had shrunk to two strokes. He faced a potentially disastrous chip shot, in some deepish rough, near the green. A camera distracted him before the shot; he stepped back and snipped. Recomposed, he stuck it to within four feet and saved par.

No one really threatened: Woods could for the most part enjoy a valedictory finish, the love of his stadium-sized galleries. “Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!” the people shouted. Woods won his first tournament in more than five years, the 80th of his career, finishing at 11 under par, two shots clear of Billy Horschel, who finished at 9-under. Justin Rose of Great Britain, on the strength of a 18th hole birdie, won the FedEx Cup playoffs, making him the season-long champion of the PGA Tour. Rose got a $ 10 million bonus for his efforts. Woods finished second in the FedEx Cup, good for $ 3 million.

Sure, the Tour Championship’s not a major, and we mostly remember the majors. But make no mistake: Woods’ win Sunday ranks right up there with other illustrious moments of his singular career.

As recently as April of last year, Woods needed his fourth back surgery in three years. His latest comeback, already tenuous as age and the golf’s wear and tear was catching up with him, hit another snag when, on Memorial Day of 2017, he was arrested for DUI near his home in Jupiter, Fla. Police found him alone and asleep at the wheel. Woods had five different drugs in his system. He later checked into a clinic to help him manage prescription pain medication and a sleep disorder.

Woods said he just wanted his life back. The surgeries made it hard for him to move around and lift his kids. Forget about golf. He never knew what was on the other side of his rehab. The result exceeded everyone’s prognosis, and now create even more fevered expectations.

Start with the Ryder Cup, the biannual international tournament which is being played outside Paris later this week. Woods has earned a spot on Team USA, which is trying to win back-to-back titles over Team Europe for the first time since 1993. Woods has never really starred at the Ryder Cup; for years, one knock on Woods was that he cared more about his individual play during the year than the international team tournaments (though can you blame him? Golf’s quite an individual sport). At his last Ryder Cup, in 2012 in Medinah, Ill., Woods finished 0-3-1 in his matches. His back, however, was bothering him that weekend. Six years later, he’s healthy and coming off one of the most memorable wins of his career. His presence should energize the Americans.

On the 18th hole Sunday in Atlanta, as Woods approached the East Lake Golf Club green with a win all but in hand, he walked beside playing partner Rory McIlroy, with a smile. Pandemonium trailed them, as hundreds of fans poured onto the fairway to witness Woods clinch the victory. They looked like acolytes following their leader. The scene was reminiscent of Tiger’s early days, when he captivated his sport like no one ever will. Who thought we’d see something similar two decades later?

“USA! USA!” some of them chanted, pumping themselves up for the Ryder Cup. “I just didn’t want to get run over,” Woods joked afterwards. He tried not to tear up on the green. He tapped in a par to win it, leaned over the hole to pluck the ball out — gingerly, so as not to tweak that back — and rose both arms into the air. A champion again. With the promise of so much more to come.

Tiger Woods Gets a Kiss From Girlfriend As He Wins First Golf Tournament in Five Years: Pic

Winners are grinners. Tiger Woods raised his arms in celebration as he won his first golf tournament in five years on Sunday, September 23, and scored a kiss from his girlfriend, Erica Herman.

The champ, 42, placed first at the 2018 Tour Championship in Atlanta — his 80th PGA title — after leading the field all weekend. It was his first win since 2013 and after several back surgeries, and the moment wasn’t lost on him, or the crowd, which cheered in excitement and loudly chanted his name.

“I had a hard time not crying coming up on that last hole,” he told the Golf Channel.

Later, as he was presented with the Calamity Jane trophy, Woods admitted he had teared up as he lined up his final shot and said, “I can’t believe I’ve pulled this off.”

Another emotional moment came after he played his winning shot and he headed to the clubhouse. He was greeted by his girlfriend, who wrapped her arms around him for a long hug followed by a kiss. He could be heard thanking Herman and saying “love you” before their liplock.

USA Today reports that Herman is the general manager of Woods’ restaurant in Jupiter, Florida, and the pair have been dating since October. They were previously spotted sharing a kiss as he went to turn in his scorecard after a PGA Championship tournament in August.

She was also seen watching Wood play alongside his kids, Sam and Charlie, with ex-wife Elin Nordegren in July. Woods and Nordegren split in 2009 after reports emerged that he had been having affairs with several women. He subsequently sought treatment for sex addiction.

As Martin goads DCI Tennison about his knowledge on a gruesome murder, he says to her: “Sell me life story to the newspapers?”

Member of First All-Black Group to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro Recounts Feat in Fascinating Blog Post

In June, a group of black travelers scaled 19,341 feet to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The adventure was organized by Outdoor Afro, a “network that celebrates and inspires African American connections and leadership in nature,” according to its website.

One of the hikers, Leandra Taylor, provides an account of the experience to wellandgood.com. Here is an excerpt:

“We were headed to the Lava Tower [15,000 feet] that day, and the hike was finally catching up to me. This was one of our longer hikes and the distance that we were planning on going should have taken us 4-6 hours, but at the 7 hour mark, we were only about half way. I was on my period, so I felt cramp-y and emotional during our lunch break, but I was also just physically exhausted.

Eventually, we had to descend a rock wall, and it was a worst-case scenario for me because of my fear of heights. When I tried to get down, I could feel a panic attack brewing: I thought, ‘I could lose my footing and fall down.’ All of my teammates were well aware of my anxiety by this point, and they were just behind me and supporting me. But as the light started to die down, I was getting more and more panicked. I just kept repeating to myself, ‘I am strong. My body’s strong. My legs are strong.’ I ended up making it to camp, and setting up my tent with the help of my troop.”

The team’s rigorous expedition schedule is on Outdoor Afro’s site:

Day 1:  Pick up from the Kilimanjaro Airport and drive to hotel in Arusha.

Day 2: Set off climbing gently through the south-western slopes of the mountain. This is old growth montane forest, carpeted with unique “busy lizzie” flowers, begonias and ferns. First camp among the giant heather at 9840 feet. A 3,936 foot ascent and six hours walking.

Day 3: Emerge from the forest into the giant heather zone and onto fine open moorland. There are fascinating geological features in the old volcanic caldera. After 3,000 foot ascent and 4-6 hours walking, the team will arrive at camp 2 by the Shira Cave at 12,500 feet.

Day 4: On this day, the team will climb to almost 16,000 feet, but will end the day around the same elevation they started. This helps with acclimatization.  They will climb towards the main peak Kibo, with the western glaciers clearly visible across the rugged high-altitude desert of volcanic rocks and boulders.

Day 5: Climb steep to the Barranco wall with some sections of very easy scrambling and then drop down again to the Karanga Valley.

Day 6: Climb above Barafu Hut perched high on a rocky bluff at 15,580 feet. There will be fantastic views of Mawenzi peak in the distance.

Day 7: An early 2-3 a.m. alpine start to climb the steep frozen scree. They will aim to reach Stella point at 18,600 feet, on the crater rim for a rest and hopefully sunrise, then continue another hour to the highest point on the continent at 19,345 feet; usually in warm sunshine.

Day 8: A descent of approximately 4,600 feet  and 4-5 hours through the forest to Mweka Gate.

One of the hikers spoke with ABC News about how he prepared for the daunting climb. “I would go on 6.5 to 10.5-mile hikes carrying packs with weights on my back once per week,” said Olatunde (Ola) Gholahan.

The number of black people traveling has steadily increased the last several years. Millennials of color are particularly interested in exploring the farthest reaches of the globe. Several travel startups have emerged; many of them catering to Millennial wanderlust.

Evita Turquoise Robinson is the the 34-year-old founder of Nomadness, an organization with the purpose to “show the world that travel has no racial, gender, religious, economic, or interest limitations.” The Nomadness community is 20,000 members strong across social media.

Sister Traveling Solo is a company founded by Coleitha Banks to assist and encourage women of color to travel solo. Haywire Weekend is a luxury travel site targeted to diverse Millennials.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

Everything you need to know before scuba diving for the first time

If you’ve ever fancied yourself as the next best thing to Ariel from The Little Mermaid, you may have thought you’d like to try your hands (and fins) at scuba diving. And you can! You don’t have to live near the sea or go on holiday to scuba dive – although it would be a bonus,. You can still scuba dive in your local swimming pool (within reason. Don’t just turn up with your scuba gear and expect to be let in). So if you want to don your flippers, check out these 5 things you need to know about diving.

You don’t need to buy all of the equipment

You know what they say, ‘all the gear but no idea.’ Well, if you turn up to your first scuba diving session with all of the equipment you’ve seen online, you will be the laughing stock of the scuba school. Many people love to keep it simple when they go scuba diving and prefer their own mask, fins, and snorkel (because you can go scuba diving without the air tanks and wetsuits!). After you’ve tried the basics with your standard snorkel and dive a bit deeper, you will need air tanks, inflatable vests, and wetsuits; but these will be provided by the scuba school. Don’t go buying it all yourself.

You don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer

Diving isn’t limited to athletically toned Olympians or those that work out every day (because for starters, who even enjoys exercise?!) Although it is desirable that you can swim at least the length of a swimming pool and not be completely out of breath, there is no exact requirement. No matter your size, weight, or physique, you can all have a go at scuba diving. There are certain medical requirements that could affect your ability to scuba dive, so always check with your doctor before you try it out.

You get to see another world

Yep, the underworld. Not the creepy underworld we see in movies and horror stories – more like The Little Mermaid…under the sea. Most people try their hands at scuba diving because they are attracted to exploring below the surface of the ocean. Because we never see the underwater world too often, having the opportunity to explore the little nooks, crannies, colors, shapes, and animals of the sea is an opportunity you just can’t pass up.

If you want to dive on your own, you need be certified

If you try out scuba diving on holiday, with a diving school, and you absolutely hate it – this won’t affect you (but we doubt this will happen). However, if you find a new-found passion, and want to carry on the sport by yourself, you will need a certification. When you first start scuba diving, you will need to be properly trained as it can be dangerous if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. You will then have to take a test to ensure you have the knowledge and practical skills to do it yourself. Just like you need a license to drive on land, you need a license to drive – or dive – in the water.

Don’t hold your breath

When you’re scuba diving, it can often be a common reaction to hold your breath – which is completely understandable. However, this can be dangerous (as we all know what happens when you hold your breath too long). When you’re scuba diving, it’s important to keep your breathing as normal as possible to maintain your bodily functions while under water. Although it may seem strange and unnatural, you have to do it.

Aldi Instacart Delivery Is Almost Here — Save $10 on Your First 3 Orders

If the idea of spelunking through your car’s cup holders for a quarter or bagging your own groceries (gasp!) is too much for you, you may still be able to score some affordable groceries from Aldi.

After testing delivery via Instacart in Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles and Chicago, the company announced on Sept. 18 that it would roll out the service to all its stores across 35 states by Thanksgiving.

Aldi shoppers ordering groceries via Instacart can request delivery in as little as an hour or as far out as a week after placing their orders. Instacart delivery fees vary, but a release from Aldi said that new Instacart customers can take $ 10 off their first three Aldi orders of $ 35 or more by using the code ALDILOVE.

Instacart grocery delivery typically costs between $ 6 and $ 12 for orders above $ 35, depending on demand. You can’t use coupons when you order via Instacart, but that’s not a problem for Aldi shoppers — the store doesn’t offer coupons.

Aldi started its delivery pilot program with Instacart in August 2017. The grocery chain, which is in the midst of an ambitious expansion plan, announced last month it would offer more fresh produce options in its stores.

This Is Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Your First Home

When she turned 27, Adria Rebbecchi decided to buy a house. Like most first-time homebuyers, she had no idea what to expect. But in the months ahead, she’d get a whirlwind education.

“Looking at a ton of different houses was fun and allowed me to explore parts of my city that I had never seen before,” said Rebbecchi, a marketing coordinator who lives in Tampa. “The most stressful part — definitely — was gathering all the necessary documentation for the mortgage.”

Buying your first home is intimidating. It’s the biggest purchase of your life so far, and you get bombarded with strange new concepts like “escrow” and “pre-qualification” and “closing costs.”

Adding to the pressure, skyrocketing home prices are making it harder than ever for first-time homebuyers like you to save enough for that crucial down payment. That puts you at a disadvantage when you’re competing with older homeowners who’ve built up tens of thousands of dollars in equity.

Hey, you’re not alone. First-time buyers make up roughly a third of all homebuyers, according to the National Association of Realtors. We’ll walk you through it.

Are You Ready to Buy (or Should You Continue Renting)?

Before you start shopping, a few things to consider…

You’re better off renting if:

  • There’s a good chance you’ll move in a few years.
  • Your job situation is shaky.
  • The down payment to buy will take all your savings.
  • You hate yard work, housework and maintenance.

You’re better off buying if:

  • You expect your family to grow.
  • You want pets, and that makes renting difficult.
  • You have enough savings for a down payment, closing costs and moving expenses.
  • You want a place to call your own — something that appreciates in value over time.

Ready to buy your own place? You’ve got this. Educate yourself. If you do a little research and ask for advice, you can save yourself a ton of money and stress.

Here’s our step-by-step guide for first-time homebuyers:

1. Start Saving for Your Down Payment

The best time to start saving is now. Right now.

The good news is, as a first-time homebuyer, you won’t have to come up with a huge down payment of 20% of the home’s purchase price. Government loan programs for new buyers allow as little as 3% to 5% down.

But even a small down payment is a big chunk of change. For example, a “low” down payment of 5% on a typical $ 200,000 house is still a whopping $ 10,000. Start saving those pennies!

It’s best to stash your savings someplace where you’re not going to touch it. A quick and easy way to get started is with Stash, a popular microinvesting app.

Stash lets you start investing with as little as $ 5. You can set it up to automatically pull a certain amount of cash from your bank account every week or every month. It funnels your money into a set of simple investment portfolios reflecting your goals and interests.

Stash charges a $ 1 monthly fee for balances under $ 5,000. If you sign up through this link with the code PENNYH, you’ll get a $ 5 bonus — that’s like five months free.

2. Check Your Credit

Before starting your fabulous home-buying journey, check your credit score. The better your credit, the better your odds of getting a mortgage with favorable interest rates.

Clueless about your credit score? Credit Sesame is a free credit monitoring service that’ll keep track of it for you. It’ll offer you personalized tips and tools to manage your debt and raise your score. You can also look at your credit reports and dispute any errors that are hurting your credit score.

3. Talk to a Lender

We know, we know. You want to go house-hunting! Why aren’t we going house-hunting yet? That’s the fun part! My God, this is torture.

Patience, young Jedi. Now it’s time to reach out to a mortgage lender. Don’t skip this part.

Here’s an easy way to do it: Just talk to the bank you’re already doing business with. It’ll set you up with a loan officer. Or you could contact a major mortgage lender like Quicken Loans, Wells Fargo or Bank of America. They work with a lot of first-time buyers, so they’ll know how to talk to you.

You could also hire an independent mortgage broker to shop around and find the mortgage that works best for you. This will save you time and hassles. But you’ll have to pay your broker about 1% of your loan amount. (That happens later, when you officially close the deal.)

You have two reasons for talking to a mortgage lender: Get pre-approved for a loan, and check out options for first-time homebuyers.

Get Pre-Approved

You can get pre-qualified for a mortgage. That’s an estimate of how much a bank might be willing to lend you, based on your income and debts.

It’s better to go a step further and get a pre-approval letter. That’s when a lender goes over your finances in depth, then outlines in writing how much it’s willing to lend you.

This way you’ll know what your price range is, and you can narrow down your search. And when you find the house you want, you’ll be ready to make a serious offer.

Look at First-Time Homebuyer Programs

As a first-time homebuyer you may be eligible for various government loan programs. Ask your mortgage adviser about this. Here are some options:

  • FHA loans: The Federal Housing Administration insures these mortgages, so that protects your lender in case you default on the loan. These loans have smaller down payments and lower closing costs than conventional loans.

With a credit score of 580 or more, you can qualify for an FHA loan with a down payment of 3.5% of the home’s purchase price, according to the FHA. If your score is lower than that — between 500 and 579 — you’ll have to put 10% down.

  • USDA loans: The U.S. Department of Agriculture backs mortgages in this program, which focuses on homes in certain rural areas. No down payment is required. No minimum credit score is required, but it’s faster and easier if your score is at least 640, according to the independent Mortgage Research Center.
  • VA loans: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs guarantees parts of mortgages for active-duty military, veterans and surviving spouses. No down payment needed. The VA’s lenders typically require a credit score of at least 620, says Veterans United.
  • Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac: These government-sponsored enterprises offer mortgages to low- and moderate-income borrowers. They require as little as 3% to 5% down. You typically need a score of at least 620 for a loan from Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. (The main difference between the two is the kind of banks they work with — Fannie Mae works with big commercial banks, while Freddie Mac works with smaller banks.)

4. Figure out How Much House You Can Afford

Don’t just look at houses at the top of your price range. Look lower, too.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to have enough money for:

  • A down payment.
  • Closing costs, usually 2% to 5% of your loan amount.
  • A home inspection, which HUD advises will likely cost $ 300 to $ 500.
  • Monthly mortgage payments.
  • Maintenance.
  • Property taxes, which will be rolled into your mortgage payments.
  • Homeowners insurance.

(Your real estate agent typically gets paid by the home’s seller when the sale goes through.)

We’d recommend going with a fixed-rate mortgage instead of an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM). With an ARM, you might have lower monthly payments at first, but they’ll get more expensive later. A bank that sells you an adjustable-rate mortgage is betting that interest rates are going to rise and make your payments go up.

If you want the smallest mortgage payment possible each month, get a customary 30-year mortgage. But if you can afford higher mortgage payments, think hard about getting a 15- or 20-year mortgage instead. You can get a lower interest rate that way, and you’ll pay off your house a lot sooner.

Talk to your real estate agent about the likely cost of property taxes and home insurance in your area.

5. Get a Real Estate Agent

This is crucial. Get an agent you’re comfortable with. Think of your agent as your guide through this whole process.

Your real estate agent will help you find homes that fit your needs and your price range. They’ll tour these homes with you. When you find a home you like, they’ll help you make an offer, and they’ll negotiate on your behalf. They’ll even guide you through the paperwork blizzard that follows.

Your agent will calm you down if you feel like you’re going to puke.

There are approximately eleventy bajillion real estate agents in the U.S., so how are you supposed to choose one? Ask for recommendations from friends, relatives and co-workers. A whole lot of them own homes, after all.

6. Go House Hunting!

Finally, you get to the fun part! Woo-HOO!

Your real estate agent can find you plenty of homes for sale. Also, feel free to drive around your favorite neighborhoods, scanning the yards for “For Sale” signs.

There’s also this thing called the internet. Every year, sites like Zillow and Realtor.com are posting more and more information online about homes for sale. And first-time homebuyers are more likely to use the internet to find the home they’ll eventually purchase, according to the National Association of Realtors.

When you’re touring houses, keep your eyes open and ask a lot of questions: How old is the roof? What about the air conditioning system? Those are super expensive! Most American homes have shingle roofs that last 20 to 25 years and central AC units that last 15 to 20 years, according to most of the experts we’ve seen.

When first-time homebuyer Timothy Moore went house-hunting, he was wowed by homes with fresh paint and new laminate flooring. But his partner knew to look for what really indicated quality: solid construction, good insulation and windows, a newer or good-condition roof, and a new or well-maintained HVAC system.

If you look at a lot of houses, they tend to blend together in your mind. Snap photos as you tour homes. At each new location, take a photo of the house number so you’ll know which place was which later on.

Adria Rebbecchi, the Tampa marketing coordinator, found house-hunting to be exhausting: “After a while, it did get to be frustrating. I had a hard time remembering which houses I had already looked at, and why I did or didn’t like them.”

7. Make an Offer

You’ve found the house you want? Make an offer on it. Don’t dawdle.

Your real estate agent can help you figure out how much to offer. The home’s sellers will either accept your offer, take someone else’s offer, or get back to you with a counter-offer.

If you and the seller agree on a price, you’ll hand over what’s called an “earnest money deposit,” showing that you’re committed to buying the house. It’s typically 1% to 2% of the purchase price.

A title company will hold the money in reserve, explains Zillow, in what’s called an “escrow account” while the house is taken off the market and you prepare to buy it. The deposit will eventually go toward your down payment and closing costs.

The next important step will be the home inspection.

8. Be There for the Home Inspection

Hire a licensed home inspector. (Your real estate agent can hook you up.)

This trained professional will examine your dream home, looking for any defects. The most common problems they find are things like faulty wiring or plumbing, poor ventilation, clogged gutters, mildewy basements or missing roof shingles, according to the National Association of Realtors.

If the inspector finds serious defects that weren’t disclosed, you can take back your offer or renegotiate. Sometimes the seller will agree to make repairs.

Tagging along for the home inspection is highly educational — you get to learn about everything that’s wrong with your new house! (Spoiler alert: There’s always something wrong. It’s usually not a deal-killer.)

Pay attention, because this knowledge will be super useful once you actually buy the place. You should also get a written report, so you’ll have a permanent record that you can refer back to.

9. Compare Mortgage Rates

At this point, you’re still not locked into one mortgage lender. Even if you’ve been pre-approved for a mortgage, you can still switch lenders in search of a better deal.

Getting quotes from multiple lenders puts you in a better bargaining position, says the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If you prefer one lender, but a different lender offers you a better rate, show the first lender the lower quote, and ask for a match.

“Essentially, you can start a mini bidding war,” first-time homebuyer Lana Axelrod says about her experience.

10. Time for Closing Costs

Finally, it’s time to close the deal. This is when you officially sign up for the mortgage, and the ownership of the property is transferred to you.

Closing mostly involves going through a thick stack of paperwork and signing your name over and over and over again. Professionals will walk you through the process. Your real estate agent will be there and probably a loan officer from whichever bank is giving you a mortgage. If you hired a mortgage broker, they’ll be there too.

No lie: Getting ready for closing is a lot of work.

Before her closing, Rebbecchi put in a lot of time gathering all the documentation she needed: “I have moved a LOT in the past few years and had a variety of jobs — so providing all my income tax returns, proof of employment and justifying previous addresses was exhausting.”

As a rule of thumb, closing costs run from 2% to 5% of your loan amount. This pays for things like having a property appraiser assess the value of the home, as Realtor.com explains, and having a title company do a title search to make sure nobody else has a claim on the property.

(You don’t have to find these people. Your lender will choose the appraiser. Your real estate agent will hook you up with a title company.)

Alternatively, you can negotiate with the seller to cover all or part of your closing costs. One common method is to have your closing costs added to the home’s purchase price, and ask the seller to pay them. That way, the seller nets the same amount of money, but your closing costs get included in your mortgage. Talk to your real estate agent about it.

11. Shop Around for Homeowners Insurance

Now that you own a home, you’ll likely need to insure it.

It’s mandatory if you have a mortgage — when you borrow money from a bank to buy a house, it’ll require you to insure that asset. In fact, your insurance premiums will be included in your monthly mortgage payments.

Homeowners insurance covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home if it gets damaged by fire or the kind of natural disaster insurers call “acts of God” — earthquakes, lightning, etc. It typically doesn’t cover damage from flooding or hurricane winds, so you may need to purchase separate insurance policies for those, depending on where you live.

To find affordable insurance, shop around.

Start by getting a free quote. We recommend the online insurance company Lemonade, where homeowners insurance starts at $ 25 a month. Instead of profiting extra when it doesn’t have to pay out claims, the company keeps a set 20% of your premium for itself, and 80% goes into a pool for paying claims and charity.

Lemonade offers homeowners insurance in New York, California, Texas, Illinois, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Arizona, Rhode Island, Georgia and the District of Columbia, and it’s expanding to other states.

Private Mortgage Insurance

If your down payment was less than 20% of your home’s value, you’ll be charged an additional monthly fee: private mortgage insurance (PMI). It protects the lender if you stop making payments.

Once you’ve made enough mortgage payments to reach 20% equity in your home, you can cancel your PMI. You might have to keep after your mortgage lender to actually stop charging you for PMI.

12. Home Sweet Home

After it’s all said and done, bask in the glory of home ownership.

Follow the example of Rebbecchi, who put a lot of work, strategy and shoe leather into finding just the right house. Even though home ownership has been a bit more work than she bargained for, she’s still glad she made the move.

“I love my house,” she said. “It’s small and quaint and has a great vibe.”

Captain Marvel trailer

Months of anticipation for Marvel fans have led to this moment, as the first trailer for Captain Marvel was shared on Good Morning America Tuesday morning. We got our first look at Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel) earlier this month, but now we finally get the chance to see the new hero in action.

While virtually every Marvel movie receives an extraordinary amount of hype before releasing, Captain Marvel has the important (and incredibly difficult) task of setting up Avengers 4, as it will be the last Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to hit theaters before the sequel to Infinity War arrives. It’s unclear how much it will connect directly to Infinity War though, as it’s set in the 1990s, well before the events of the original Iron Man.

What to Wear on Your First Day at Work

what to wear on your first day at workHere’s a fun question for today: What are your best tips for someone on what to wear on your first day at work? Do you play it very safe with your interview outfit? If it’s a business casual environment and a suit isn’t appropriate, what do you wear for your first-day outfit?

We’ve talked about how to make your first day on the job a GREAT one, as well as what to wear on your first day at a very casual law office, but it’s been a while — I can’t wait to hear what the readers say!

Here are some factors that I would consider when picking out what to wear on your first day at work:

  • Professionalism: I always tell people that it’s OK to wear your interview clothes to your first day — so if you interviewed in a suit, you should probably wear a suit on your first day. (It’s OK if it’s the same suit you interviewed in; odds are low your interviewer(s) will remember exactly what your suit looked like.) This may be a pantsuit instead of a skirt suit, of course (and for my own $ .02 would probably be my choice, for comfort reasons as laid out below), but may also be a sleeved sheath dress or something along those lines. (And to echo what commenters are saying: yes, absolutely expect to take your blazer off if you’re wearing a suit on your first day!)
  • Comfort: Of course, you always want to be comfortable, but I’m thinking of some particular situations where I might choose a more comfortable option over something else. For example, you may find yourself having to run around from one department to another, either for introductions or training — so wear comfortable shoes. Furthermore, on the shoe point: During a normal workday there are often options to quickly kick off your heels under a desk or change to commuting shoes to run and grab lunch, whereas on your first day those options may not present themselves and you may be in your shoes for nine or ten hours straight. If you’re wearing a skirt, I’d urge you to do the Mirror Test because on your first day you may often be sitting in someone’s visitor chair, across the desk from them, or (if you’re starting with several new workers at once, as in many BigLaw firms) in a group situation like an HR presentation or a packed conference room.
  • Office temperature: This can be something of an unknown, particularly if you’re starting work in a month like May or September, where the office A/C or heat may or may not be switched to the appropriate setting — so dress in intelligent layers! Don’t wear a sleeveless dress or shell as your base layer in case you end up sweltering in whatever you intended to wear on top (because if going sleeveless isn’t considered appropriate at your new office, you’re stuck). By the same token, if you wear something too lightweight you may be freezing all day, so it’s a good idea to add a cardigan or blazer to your ensemble so that you have something intentional to put on top.
  • Pockets: This can be a little like hunting for a unicorn, but if you’re between two options and one has pockets and the other does not, then go for pockets. (Here’s our last discussion on sleeved dresses with pockets; do note the widget at the bottom of the post with 2018 options for sleeved dresses with pockets.)

Readers, what are your best tips for what to wear on your first day at work? Have you ever started a job and really regretted your outfit choices? Do you have any memories (good or bad) of what a work colleague wore for his or her first day at work?

We’ve seen many movies about alien invasions, but not what happens in the ensuing years following an attack. We don’t get a lot of sequels from this sci-fi sub-genre because that tends to be overkill. But if the massive success of District 9 a decade ago taught us anything, it's that there is room for movies that skip past the actual invasion and show us life alongside the aliens post-arrival.

Captive State promises to be this kind of alternative entertainment, blending…

At Kate Spade’s First NYFW Since Its Founder’s Death, The Show Goes On

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Finally, the oppressive New York heat broke on Friday, and Kate Spade (the brand) heralded the cooler season, ringing it in with bells, whistles, a bit of glitter—and an inevitable pause for thought.

Though Kate Spade left her namesake line when she sold it to Neiman Marcus, and had no creative or financial control over the label since then, her death by suicide in June put the label’s New York Fashion Week show under an understandable spotlight.

But, unlike an award show, there would be no In Memoriam highlight reel of Spade headshots set to the tune of an overplayed acoustic ballad.

A few weeks ago, Red delayed the release of its Hydrogen One smartphone to November 2nd and announced that early adopters that had already preordered the device could exchange their preorders for the “Houdini Development Model,” which would ship weeks earlier than the production model. The first Houdini units began arriving today, and popular YouTuber Marques Brownlee has already published a hands-on unboxing video.

We got to see the Hydrogen One from a variety of angles when Red shared the first official photos last week, but this is the first time we’re getting to see a (near) final version of the hardware in action.

Watch Ryan Gosling in Exciting New 'First Man' Trailer; Here's Everything We Know

We first heard about the prospect of Ryan Gosling portraying astronaut Neil Armstrong, best known as the first man to step foot on the moon, back in November 2015. Damien Chazelle was already set to direct the film. At the time, Gosling and Chazelle were working together on La La Land, which was released the following year and eventually earned six Academy Awards, including Best Director for Chazelle.

A new trailer for First Man has now been released and it looks absolutely thrilling….

MOVIE APP UPDATE:

First Black Female White House Reporter to be honored with Life-Sized Statue in D.C.

A life-sized bronze statue is underway for Alice Allison Dunnigan, the first African American woman to receive press credentials to cover the White House. The sculpture is scheduled to be unveiled next month at the Newseum, an interactive museum based in Washington, D.C. that celebrates news history and is dedicated to underscoring the importance of a free press and the First Amendment.

Dunnigan, who began her journalism career in Kentucky before moving to Washington, D.C., was a pioneering journalist who rose to the top of her profession despite racist policies that segregated black journalists and sexist attitudes that severely limited opportunities for women in a male-dominated workplace, reads a press release.

Dunnigan was born in 1906 as the daughter of a sharecropper and a domestic worker. As a child, she dreamed of traveling around the world and reporting on her experiences as a newspaper writer. She landed her first writing gig at just 13 years old at a local newspaper where she wrote one-sentence news items.

Her career trajectory shifted when she became older. She completed a college teaching course at what is now Kentucky State University and went on to work as a public school teacher in Kentucky from 1924 to 1942. However, in search of a better paying job, she relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1942 and began working as a federal government employee while taking night courses at Howard University.

In 1946, she was offered a job as a Washington correspondent writing for the Chicago Defender, a black-owned weekly publication that paid her substantially less than her male counterparts. She supplemented her income with other writing gigs, including the Associated Negro Press, where she was eventually named as the outlet’s Washington Bureau chief.

In 1948, she became the first African American female White House correspondent, covering presidential press conferences. She was also granted press credentials to cover Congress, the Supreme Court, and the State Department. That same year, she became the first African American woman on a presidential tour and the only black reporter to cover President Harry S. Truman’s famous whistle-stop train tour.

During her career in journalism, Dunnigan developed a reputation as a hardline reporter, who asked tough questions about racial and gender equality, all while enduring a great deal of discrimination, herself. She was barred from white-only establishments to cover President Eisenhower and forced to sit with the servants to cover Sen. Robert A. Taft’s funeral. “Race and sex were twin strikes against me. I’m not sure which was the hardest to break down,” she once stated, according to the press release.

Nevertheless, she persisted as a journalist until 1960, when she was appointed to a position on Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidential campaign and later as an education consultant of the Presidential Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity. She continued to work in other high-level political and government roles up until the election of President Richard Nixon.

Following her stint at the White House, Dunnigan wrote an autobiography titled A Black Woman’s Experience: From Schoolhouse to White House, which was published in 1974. She died in 1983 at the age of 77.

Dunnigan’s monument is being created by Kentucky-based sculptor Amanda Matthews. It will be displayed at the Newseum from Sept. 21 through Dec. 16 and then moved to Dunnigan’s home state at the West Kentucky African American Heritage Center.

First Man Doesn’t Quite Live Up to Ryan Gosling’s Thoughtful Neil Armstrong Performance

Damien Chazelle, director of the macho-jazz wingding Whiplash and a floaty modern musical about a great American city, La La Land, is a flashy filmmaker of great ambition. You don’t scale a movie about the first guy to walk on the moon if you’re not. Chazelle’s fourth feature, First Man—which opens the 75th edition of the Venice Film Festival—tells the story of astronaut Neil Armstrong, one of the unflashiest heroes of NASA, if not of the whole last half of the 20th century. In 1969 Armstrong took the first step onto that strange, powdery surface and uttered a few simple words that captivated people all over the world. But in the years that followed, he largely retreated from publicity. In 2005, at the time James R. Hansen’s biography, First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, was published, the former star astronaut was living quietly in a Cincinnati suburb. In 2001, while helping to conduct interviews for the official NASA oral history, professor and writer Douglas Brinkley met Armstrong and asked him if he’d ever gazed at the moon before that historic Apollo 11 flight. “No, I never did that,” he said.

Armstrong died in 2012, and it’s hard not to wonder what he’d make of Chazelle’s version of his story, adapted from Hansen’s book by screenwriter Josh Singer. This is a respectful movie, even a genuflecting one; there’s never a moment when Chazelle fails to let you know he’s doing important, valuable work. But that’s the problem: The movie feels too fussed-over for such a low-key hero. Its star, Ryan Gosling, turns in a discreet, sensitive performance, almost too sensitive for the movie around it: Minute after minute, Chazelle and cinematographer Linus Sandgren are right there with the (often) handheld camera, coming in tight for allegedly meaningful closeups or jiggling hard to connote, say, the brain-rattling feeling of being an astronaut leaving the Earth’s atmosphere in a space capsule. The wriggly camera work doesn’t make the jostling more dramatic. If anything, it makes the proceedings seem inconsequential, no-biggie events that need to be jazzed up visually with excess technique.

First Man Neil Armstrong Film with Ryan Gosling
Universal PicturesOn the heels of their six-time Academy Award®-winning smash, “La La Land,” Oscar®-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures’ “First Man,” the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969.

That’s a drag, because Chazelle and Singer have taken visible care with some of the movie’s dramatic details. First Man doesn’t have the jaunty spirit of Philip Kaufman’s great 1983 Tom Wolfe adaptation, The Right Stuff, which focuses on the original Mercury astronauts, the precursors to Armstrong’s group, who flew the Gemini and Apollo missions. That movie’s cheerful casualness actually enhanced the sense of danger surrounding those early missions. Chazelle chooses another path, and his instincts aren’t inherently wrong. It took a long time for the Gemini astronauts, and later those of the Apollo missions, to reach the moon, and men died trying to get there; in the movie’s best moments, Chazelle makes you feel that weight. He succeeds in making the events directly preceding that first lunar landing, a mission undertaken by Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin (Corey Stoll) and Mike Collins (Lukas Haas), seem suitably tense, even though we all know how it turned out. First Man also helps you imagine the grief Armstrong must have felt when his close friend and colleague, Ed White (Jason Clarke), was burned to death—along with Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee—during a pre-launch test for Apollo 1. Gosling is sensitive enough as an actor to understand Armstrong’s devotion to science, to the point where he must have preferred its language of numbers and facts to the murkier arena of feelings.

There’s a lot of science in First Man. You hear plenty of important-sounding men intoning stuff about vectors and coordinates and the like—a space movie needs that. But there are also a lot of feelings—too many feelings, even for those of us who like them. Chazelle and Singer seem to want to balance the greatness of Armstrong’s achievement with his own personal tragedy: He and his wife, Janet (played, with a great deal of astronaut-wife fortitude, by Claire Foy), lost their young daughter to a brain tumor in the early 1960s; shortly thereafter, Armstrong signed on to become an astronaut. Chazelle seems desperate to link these two events, as if you couldn’t make a pretty good Neil Armstrong movie without doing so. Losing a child is a devastating experience. But in First Man, Gosling’s Armstrong is tasked with reminding us of his pain in practically every other scene: As his daughter is dying, he holds her and gazes at the moon, singing a lunar-themed lullaby. After her death, he has a hallucinatory vision of her playing with some other little kids. Immediately after the funeral, he solemnly slips her little beaded bracelet into a drawer. (Keep an eye on that bracelet—it’s going to make a dramatic return.) Janet reveals to a friend that Armstrong never talks about his daughter; that’s a believable, searing detail. It’s Chazelle, with his constant stream of movie language, who can’t stop jabbering about her.

In 2018, we generally feel bad for men who can’t express their emotions, and most of us are rightly happy that more men have learned it’s OK to do so. But does it really serve men of Armstrong’s generation to have young filmmakers applying Psych 101 principles to their emotions some 60 years after the fact? Chazelle dramatizes several instances in which Armstrong’s background as an aeronautical engineer—and his overall quick thinking—helped prevent disaster, showing that there’s joy in science and exploration by themselves. But too much of First Man made me feel protective, posthumously, of Armstrong’s emotional privacy. Armstrong must have been lying when he told Brinkley he’d never gazed upon the moon—come on, we all look at it from time to time. It belongs to all of us, as a song once said. But Armstrong’s answer indicates that there were some things he just didn’t want to talk about, especially to a stranger. Life, and its loss, is its own mystery. There’s no explanation, and no cure, for the moon inside.

Pete Davidson’s first tattoo was a tribute to Ariana Grande’s ex-boyfriend Big Sean, and OMGOMGOMG

Having a tattoo in honor of an ex is awkward enough, but having a tattoo dedicated to your new fiancée’s ex? That’s even worse, and that’s the nightmare Pete Davidson, the future Mr. Ariana Grande, is currently living—even though it doesn’t seem like he (or Grande) is too upset about it.

During an interview with Variety for the mag’s Young Hollywood cover, Davidson let the news slip…and somehow, he’s barely fazed by it. While sharing facts about his life and his past, he admitted that his first tattoo is on his leg and says “swerve life,” a tribute to the catchphrase in a Big Sean song.

“I was 17 when I got my first tattoo. It was a tattoo I got with my buddy, Ricky, and it says ‘swerve life’ because of the Big Sean song that had that like ‘swerve’ in it. We were like, ‘That’s gonna last forever,’” he said.

Might we remind you that Grande and Sean dated for almost a year? To the point where they were open about their relationship publicly, even on social media?

on our way to grandps' celebration of life earlier 💜💜 @bigsean

A post shared by Ariana Grande (@arianagrande) on

And yes, it has been almost four years since that relationship ended, but still. It’s kind of hilariously awkward, right? To us, maybe, but not to Grande and Davidson, since he probably wouldn’t be bringing up on camera and laughing about it if it bothered them. Plus, at this point, Grande and Davidson have matching tattoos of their own, so how much does that one piece of art really matter?

Besides, it’s not like the “swerve” tattoo is the only one that Davidson has. This dude is covered in ink, and now we want to know the back story to all of his cool tattoos. Maybe one day soon, he’ll fill us in?

12 Steps to Take Care of Your Money After Landing Your First Grown-up Job

You did it. You’re free! With a college diploma in your hand, you run out to take the world by storm. It’s time to show everyone just how awesome you can do the adulting thing.

Then the bills start rushing in like your college buddies at a happy hour taco bar.

Getting that first real job might not happen just as you hope. For 2017 Florida State graduate Hannah Bartholomew, the job market wasn’t quite what she had expected.

“They really blow salaries out of proportion in college,” she says. “They really exaggerate what you’ll be making out of college. I had to think, ‘What is the very minimum I can make?’”

So even when you do find a job in your field, you might not be cashing checks as big as you thought.

But you’re in the real world now, and it’s time to give yourself a reality check.

How to Manage Your Finances After You Get a Real Job

Here are a few ideas to start your financial life off on the right foot.

1. Get a Few Bucks for That Futon

One of the first things you want to do when you get a good job is to upgrade your home, even if it’s still a one-bedroom rental. No more futons and framed Bob Marley posters. You’re ready for a sectional sofa and some real art.

But don’t just shove that stuff into your car and take it to the donation stop. It still has value to somebody. Sell it!

You can sell virtually anything on Letgo. This intuitive app lets you snap a photo and list your item in less than 30 seconds. It removes a lot of the hassle of selling things online, and it’s 100% free to use.

2. Start Budgeting — Without Giving up on Fun

The dreaded B-word. Budget. It doesn’t have to be as scary as you think. Having a budget doesn’t mean you have to cut out any and all fun things in your life. It just means you are focusing your finances enough to meet your goals.

“When I graduated, honestly, my primary goal was to find a way to support myself and not have to move back in with my parents,” says Bartholomew.

Talk about life goals. We’ve all been there.

If you’re a bit nervous about setting a budget, consider the 50/20/30 budget. It’s easy, and it gives you plenty of wiggle room because, face it, you still want to hit that happy hour taco bar once in a while, right?

Here’s how it works. Every month you set aside:

  • 50% of your income for essentials, like rent or mortgage, groceries, utilities, car insurance and other important bills.
  • 20% for your financial goals, like retirement savings, paying down your college debt or even saving for a home.
  • 30% for your personal spending. These are your funds for dining out, drinks with friends, Netflix, travel, shopping, etc. That’s a pretty big chunk of money you get to play with each month.

The trick to this budget, like any, is to stick to it. You’ll make progress on your financial goals while still having a life.

3. Break up With Your High School Bank

“The bank that I use is a local credit union that I’ve used my whole life,” says Bartholomew. “Quite honestly, it’s a hassle to switch banks.”

Quick… why do you bank where you bank? Like Hannah, it’s probably because that’s where your family has always done their banking business. But other options offer perks you might not have considered.

Take, for example, the option to get your shiny new paycheck a couple of days early. If that idea sounds good to you, you should check out Chime.

Unlike most banks, this online bank won’t wait until your pay date to get your money. As soon as it receives notification of a direct deposit from your employer, it immediately posts those funds to your account — up to two days before payday.

Who doesn’t want to get paid early?

Opening an account with Chime is free and only takes about five minutes.

4. Take Care of Your Student Loans

Now that you have your diploma in hand and you’re gainfully employed, you’re going to have to start paying back those student loans.

Ugh.

Do your loans have a good interest rate? Finding a lower rate can help you spend less on interest and pay off those loans faster.

Consider refinancing for a better rate.

An easy way to do this is with LendKey, a service that allows you to quickly browse low-interest loans from credit unions and community banks.

That’s LendKey’s secret sauce. Compared to the big national bank chains, smaller community banks often offer more borrower-friendly loan terms — namely, lower interest rates and more flexibility.

LendKey’s simple, straightforward online platform can help you find and apply for the right loan without visiting a dozen bank branches.

And if you’ve been turned down by other lenders, don’t fret. LendKey has more lenient credit score minimums and income requirements for applicants, so you have a better shot at getting a loan through the company.

Plus, when you’re approved for a loan you applied for through LendKey, you’ll get a $ 100 bonus after the loan is disbursed. That’s a hundred bucks you can put right toward paying down your new, lower-interest student loan. Boom!

5. Pay Attention to This Score (It’s Not a Game)

Your credit score is important. You’ve heard that. But, now that you’re adulting, it’s time to take it seriously.

Did you know your credit score could be inaccurate? One out of five credit reports have an error, according to a study by the Federal Trade Commission.

To keep a closer eye on your credit, get your credit score and a “credit report card” for free from Credit Sesame. It breaks down exactly what’s on your credit report in layman’s terms, how it affects your score and how to address it.

Because it simplifies everything, you should be able to spot any errors. For instance, if you find an “unpaid” credit card that you know you paid, or a bill in collections you know never existed, you can dispute the incorrect information and raise your credit score.

Now that you have a great job, get a handle on your credit score and start making it shine.

6. Pay Your Bills

Adulting means paying bills. The good news is with your new job, you can afford to pay them. You just need to remember to do it.

How about getting rewards for paying your bills on time?

An app called MoneyLion offers rewards to help you develop healthy financial habits and will literally pay you for logging onto the app.

You can earn points in the rewards program by paying bills on time, connecting your bank account or downloading the mobile app.

You can redeem those points for gift cards to retailers like Amazon, Apple and Walmart.

7. Stop Calling Mom and Dad for Emergency Money

There might have been a time when you could just pick up the phone and call Mom or Dad when your car went on the fritz or you had to pay for a quick trip to urgent care.

Welcome to the real world. You have a career now, so it’s up to you to prepare for those little life speed bumps with an emergency fund.

An emergency fund should be able to help you out with small emergencies, like a car repair, as well as tougher times, like finding yourself out of work for a bit. A savings account with three to six months of income is typically recommended.

Don’t worry. You don’t need to have it all set right away, but you should set up a plan to start building that fund. Consider it a buffer between you and living in your parents’ basement. Yeah, your old room is now Mom’s she-den. You didn’t know that? Sorry.

8. Start Thinking About Retirement (Yes, Already)

If you’re just starting out with your 401(k) plan at your new job, do everything you can to put it into high gear. You can really make a difference in these early years.

It takes more than just taking that 3% out of your paycheck, though.

Chances are, your 401(k) could be doing a lot better. Take control with help from Blooom, an SEC-registered investment advisory firm that can optimize and monitor your 401(k) for you and keep it speeding toward retirement.

It just takes a few minutes to get a free 401(k) analysis that will show you whether your investments are allocated properly and whether you’re losing money paying hidden investment fees.

It’ll even tell you just how much more money your account could earn by the time you want to retire. At your age, you might be able to make a significant difference.

After that, if you sign up, it’s just $ 10 per month to have Blooom monitor and maximize your 401(k). Bonus: Penny Hoarders get the first month free with the code PNNYHRD.

9. You’re Ready to Invest (No, Really)

Investing? You’re used to just trying to pay the rent!

It’s OK, you can start small with Acorns. The app lets you stack up change over time with its “round-up” feature. That means if you spend $ 10.23 at the grocery store, 77 cents gets dropped into your Acorns account.

Then, the app does the whole investing thing for you.

The idea is you won’t miss the digital pocket change, and the automatic savings stack up faster than you’d think. For example, we reviewed how Penny Hoarder Dana Sitar was able to save at a rate of $ 420 a year!

At that rate, you could set aside $ 1,000 in about two and a half years — without trying.

The app is $ 1 a month for balances under $ 1 million, and you’ll get a $ 5 bonus when you sign up.

10. Don’t Pay Full Price… Ever

These days, there is no reason to pay full price for anything… ever. OK, maybe you pay upfront, but you should at least get some money back, right?

One of our favorite ways to save is with Ebates, a cash-back site that rewards you nearly every time you buy something. For example, Ebates gives you 10% cash-back on online purchases at Walmart.

Plus, you’ll get a free $ 10 gift card to Walmart for giving the site a try.

To earn your gift card:

  1. Sign up for Ebates with your email or Facebook account.
  2. Use the Ebates portal the next time you need to buy something. It’s connected to thousands of stores, including Walmart, Amazon and Target. You’ll need to make your first purchase through the site within 90 days and spend at least $ 25.
  3. Your account will be credited with rewards points you can cash in for your $ 10 Walmart gift card.

Seriously, it’s too easy not to use. You’re buying that stuff online anyway so why not get some money back?

11. Deal With the College Credit You Didn’t Want

A lot of us are being crushed by credit card interest rates north of 20%. It’s OK. It’s the same scoop for a lot of recent grads. If you’re in that boat, consolidation and refinancing might be worth a look.

A good resource is consumer financial technology platform Even Financial, which can help match you with the right personal loan to meet your needs.

Even searches the top online lenders to match you with a personalized loan offer in less than 60 seconds. Its platform can help you borrow up to $ 100,000 (no collateral needed) with fixed rates starting at 4.99% and terms from 24 to 84 months.

You want to keep you college memories forever, not the credit card bills you racked up. A better interest rate will make them disappear like your freshman-year roommate.

12. Figure out Where You Fall on the Adulting Curve

women chatting in the street.

As Bartholomew took stock of her new situation, she had to keep the big picture in mind.

“I make enough money to pay my bills and to save an acceptable amount of what I make,” she says. “But you think about the American dream of buying a home, owning property or being debt-free… that’s something that comes to mind the most.”

But do you know how your financial plan is stacking up your friends’? Admit it. You want to know. What if your friends or relatives your age a getting out of debt and saving way faster than you?

Status Money is an app that allows you to anonymously compare your financial situation with your peers’ without asking those awkward, prying questions. Tap into this database, and you’ll be able to compare your income, debt, interest rates, credit score, spending… you name it.

By seeing how others are doing, you can see what you need to work on — or where you can sit back a little and just breathe easy.

Now Relax. You’ve Done the Hard Part.

You’re at an exciting point in your life. Landing that first “real” job is fun, but it can also be a little intimidating. Life is going to expect a little more of you now.

By taking a good look at your finances now, you can set yourself up for a great financial future. The toughest part is making the decision to do it.

So now what? Did someone say “taco bar”?

Kat Graham On Playing The First Black April O’Neil In ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Reboot

Nickelodeon has ordered a 26-episode second season of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the announcement came ahead of the series premiere. The network made the announcement during Viacom’s presentation at TCA last month.

The animated series is set to debut September 17, 2018, but fans were treated with a sneak preview on July 20, when the first 5 episodes of the series were released online the same day.

Ant Ward and Andy Suriano serve as EP’s on this re-imagined series, which will have the Turtles go on new adventures as they seek to unlock the mystical secrets of New York City.

The cast includes Ben Schwartz, Omar Benson Miller, Josh Brener, Brandon Mychal Smith, Eric Bauza, John Cena and Vampire Diaries star Kat Graham voices April O’Neil — a human friend of the Ninja Turtles.

This series’ version of April will be the first-ever black depiction. Her early appearance in the comics is a Caucasian Irish-American red-haired woman.

“They decided to go with an African-American actress and African-American character. I knew that being part of Ninja Turtles was going to be a big deal, but I had no idea the weight of that decision and how important it would be because when I was growing up, there were no young Black cartoon characters — female, anyways — that were in this position,” said Graham during TCA.

Adding, “By the time there were, I was a little older; too much older to appreciate it. My take on this character and what I hope to bring to this character is not just what comes with being a young Black girl, but the fierceness, the being able to hang with the boys, the playfulness, the strength. I want young girls to see this and see that there’s a brown cartoon character that they can relate to, that they can say, “Well, April O’Neil did it, so I can do it too!” If you have a daughter, I want her to watch it and see that she relates to it. So that’s my dream for this character and that’s what I see for her.”

Voiceover actor Robert Paulsen, whose roles include Raphael and Donatello from the 1987 cartoon and 2012 cartoon respectively of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, serves as voice director for this TV series.

“He’s incredible,” Graham said. “He’s done so many iconic characters, but he has such a demeanor about him and he’s really coached us. When we were doing the first couple episodes, we’re trying to figure out the character. We’re trying to figure out the groove, the rhythm of all that,” she explained.

“And he really — especially for me — he guided me into a really great place for this character. He’s just so humble and so — he’s just a really great person. I know that might sound a little vague but I think that he’s just — I can keep going on and on about Rob Paulsen,” she added.

Besides voice directing, Paulsen will also be providing voice work on the project, which Suriano described as “an exciting cartoon for today’s generation.”

“There’s certain inherent qualities of the Turtle franchise that have been so resilient and popular. I mean it’s 34 years old, from the ’80s comic books, to the cartoons, and all the iterations. So we — Ant and myself, we looked at it and we said what we liked about all of it, what we thought it worked from all of it. We kind of played with it like a chemistry set and distilled the elements that we thought would be, and an exciting cartoon for today’s generation.”

First 10 Dress Shirts a Man Should Own

Dress shirts are one of the most important style basics in your wardrobe and most men have dress shirts but often, they don’t quite work with the rest of their  wardrobe and so over the years, I have had hundreds of dress shirts and I learned a thing or two, so if I would have to do it all over again, these are the first dress shirts I would start with.

While dress shirts form the foundation of a classic man’s wardrobe, they’re often overlooked in favor of suits, shoes, or accessories, however, if you get your first dress shirts wrong, it’s much harder to combine them with other things and you may not get the wear out of them. With these dress shirts, you’ll basically be equipped for all classic men’s style outfits yet you really cover just the basics so you don’t spend more money than you ultimately have to. Basically, there are always three main considerations; color, fabric, and shirt details.

Plain white dress shirt - simple and neat

Plain white dress shirt – simple and neat

1. Plain Weave White Solid Dress Shirt

I suggest going with a medium spread collar, as well as barrel cuffs because it allows you to wear it in more formal and less formal settings. It’s also something you can pair with jeans or denim, as well as with a very formal business suit. Opt for a medium weight fabric because it’s something you can wear year-round. If it’s too thin, it’s just appropriate for summer. If it’s too thick, you can only wear it during the colder months of the year and overall, you want something that’s as versatile as possible when you’re just starting out.

Personally, I’m a big fan of cufflinks and for that, you need a double cuff or a French cuff, however, I suggest not to opt for those in your very first shirt because it’s an additional expense and you’re just starting out, you’re better off investing money in your first shirt.

Placket comparison

Placket comparison

For a traditional placket, I suggest you get a French style which means there’s no additional piece of fabric; it is sewn underneath the buttons, it’s just a very neat seam. On top of that, I suggest you skip the pocket simply because a shirt pocket is really not meant to be used. That being said, a lot of off-the-rack shirts come with shirt pockets. I have a few shirts in my wardrobe that I got vintage or used that have shirt pockets but if I go custom and I have the option, I always skip the pocket.

2. Fancy Weave White Dress Shirt

Preferably with double cuffs or French cuffs. A shirt with a subtle waffle pattern weave makes it slightly different compared to a plain weave in the sense that if you look at it very closely and the light shines in a certain direction, you can see it has a pattern, however, from a few feet away or a few meters away, you think it’s a solid shirt with a nice depth of color. Again, skip the pocket and if you went with a French placket before, go with a shirt placket around this time simply so you have a range of different things in your wardrobe.

subtle waffle pattern

If you do not fancy the waffle pattern, you can go with a herringbone pattern

If you do not fancy the waffle pattern, you can go with a herringbone pattern

It just creates a more symmetrical look especially when you wear a bow tie. If you wear a necktie, it doesn’t matter because your shirt placket is covered up anyway. If you don’t want a waffle weave, a very popular pattern is a small herringbone pattern weave. Look for a very fine weave because that’s something that will stand the test of time. Again, for the collar, I would go with a classic medium spread collar because it suits every face shape, it works with tie knots, bow ties, or as an open collar.

A selection of light blue dress shirts in different shades

3. Light Blue Dress Shirt

It should be made of a medium fabric, ideally, plain weave. Again, barrel cuffs, no pocket and French placket. If I say light blue, you’ll encounter probably 500 different shades of light blue and what you choose is ultimately up to you and your taste. I find a lighter shade of light blue that is more pastel in color is more versatile, especially in the beginning.

Light blue dress shirt

4. Another Shade Of Light Blue

You can go darker, you can go lighter, just make sure it’s different. For the fabric itself, I suggest getting something in a twill weave because it’s a new small weave pattern that you don’t already have and it’s a very classic thing, it is hard wearing, and it’s particularly good in a slightly heavier fabric for winter because you want to have a variety of shirts in your wardrobe. Of course, if you live in a place where it’s always cold, you should get shirts that are heavier.

You can also opt for a twill weave

You can also opt for a twill weave

If you live in a tropical climate, only get shirts that are lighter in weight. I’ll suggest going with double cuffs and if you want to experiment with a collar here, you can do so. Maybe you get a slightly larger collar, not a small collar, and make sure overall, it’s just something that works out well for you. If your other light blue shirt has barrel cuffs or button cuffs, opt for a French cuff just to give you more versatility.

An ivory shirt works well for brown toned jackets

An ivory shirt works well for brown toned jackets

5. Ivory Dress Shirt

It should be distinctly different from white if you hold them next to each other, however, it’s so close to white on its own that most people would never realize you’re not wearing a plain white dress shirt. Plain white works really best with dark colors; it could be a dark green, dark blue, dark charcoal, or black, however, when you pair it with warmer colors such as brown, all of a sudden, the white just looks wrong.

It’s especially true if you pair a white dress shirt with tweed, the contrast is too stark and it doesn’t work as well. This is when the ivory shirt really shines, it’s super versatile because you can wear it with a business suit in charcoal or a navy but you can also wear it with much warmer tones or summer suits and it will always look more appropriate than the plain white shirt.

In terms of details, the choice here is really up to you. If you wear more cufflinks, go with a French cuff. If you don’t have cufflinks, go with a barrel cuff. If you already got the basics covered, the ivory shirt is just a shirt that I would bring when I travel and because of that, I would probably get it in a barrel cuff because that would allow me to wear it with more casual outfits, as well as formal business suits.

Light blue stripes on a white background

Light blue stripes on a white background

6. Blue Striped Shirt On A White Background

The size of the blue stripe is up to you. I’d stay away from extremely fine ones or extremely bold ones, go with something in the middle down the line because that will work well with all kinds of solid suits. It adds another pattern and you can then either go with a solid tie or have a patterned tie as well. Something that works particularly well are small Macclesfield neats micropatterns.

A few of Sven Raphael's striped dress shirts

A few of Sven Raphael’s striped dress shirts

7. White Striped Shirt On A Blue Background

Ideally, the stripe should be different from what you already had so I’d suggest going more with a finer stripe rather than with a bolder stripe because you want it to be super versatile. Again, a finer stripe will look more like a solid from afar but it will add a different color depth; it works well from close-up because even if you have a pattern, let’s say a stripe and a tie, the stripe is so fine that it works really well together.

Black, blue, and white checked dress shirt

Black, blue, and white checked dress shirt

8. Checked Dress Shirt

It can either be a light blue check on a white background or you can maybe go with a red and blue check on a white background. It just adds an additional color to your shirt wardrobe plus red and blue are staples in a classic man’s wardrobe so you’ll always be able to wear it, it never looks out of place, and it’ll look good with a blazer. If you wear it more casually, again, go with a button-down collar because it works well with checked shirts. I would also opt for the button cuffs because you will likely be wearing this kind of shirt more in a casual environment.

A beautiful OCBD by Turnbull and Asser

A beautiful OCBD by Turnbull and Asser

9. Oxford Cloth Button Down Shirt

It’s an American staple, it’s a very hard-wearing cloth. I’ll get it in a light blue color because the Oxford fabric has strands of different colors in white and blue so it gives a nice color effect in the light but you can also wear it with or without a suit when you work. It’s just a shirt that will stay in your wardrobe for a long time.

A denim shirt can look great if combined properly

A denim shirt can look great if combined properly

10. Soft Washed Denim Dress Shirt

Ten-fifteen years ago, it wasn’t really something that men would actually wear. In recent years, it has become so popular that men stock loads of them. In general, a soft washed denim dress shirt really tones down any kind of formal garment you have. So if you are only in a white-collar environment, it may not be the ideal thing for work but it’s definitely something you could off work. You can always tone down your suits or basically any kind of outfit with this kind of soft washed denim shirt. I know one could argue that is a fairly recent invention and it may not stand the test of time and while you were right about that, with the general casualization of men’s wardrobe, I’m pretty sure it’ll still be around in 10 years, we’ll see.

Do you have all these dress shirts in your closet? If not, what are your dress shirt essentials?

45 GREAT MOMENTS IN BLACK BUSINESS – No. 6: Maynard Jackson Becomes Atlanta’s First Black Mayor

BLACK ENTERPRISE celebrates the 45th anniversary of its roster of the nation’s most successful black businesses—The BE 100s. To commemorate the significance of this collective’s widespread impact on black business and economic development as well as American industry over four decades, we have presented 45 milestone moments. As part of this tribute, we continue our yearlong countdown.

Maynard Jackson Becomes a Disrupter as Atlanta’s First Black Mayor

1974: Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson establishes first Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) program, which “sets aside” a percentage of government contracts for minority businesses and encourages major corporations to follow suit. That act creates legions of African American millionaires and expands scores of BE 100s companies, including H.J. Russell & Co., the nation’s largest black construction firm. Jackson would eventually launch two BE 100s companies: T.G.I Friday’s franchisee Jackmont Hospitality and investment bank Jackson Securities.

Confronting the ‘Old Boy’s Network’

maynard jackson

(Black Enterprise Magazine, November 1975)

Jackson’s plan surfaced when he informed city leaders he was proceeding with the expansion of the then-named Hartsfield Airport. He shook up Atlanta’s old boy’s network with this: 25% of all contracts were allotted for minority firms. That those firms could land a big chunk of the project first valued at $ 450 million.

But some influential men in the South revolted, claiming the act was illegal. They urged the governor and state legislators to seize control of the airport expansion project from the Jackson regime. Yet Jackson did not flinch, reportedly stating: “We simply won’t build [the airport] if you don’t agree to this. You can have 75% of the project or you can have 100% of nothing. What is your choice?”

After a two-year battle, both sides agreed to a re-adjusted set-aside plan: a participation stake of 20% to 25% for minority-owned firms. Jackson action’s also set a benchmark for affirmative action programs nationally, including in big cities with large black populations.

In Atlanta, Jackson boosted the portion of contracts to minorities from under 1% in 1973 to roughly 39% five years later. Jackson’s efforts empowered the black middle-class, helped create many black millionaires and produce many BE 100s companies. Among them: H. J. Russell & Co., the nation’s largest black construction firm and No. 14 on the 2018 Top 100 list with $ 253 million in revenue.

“Jackson was like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when it came to ensuring African Americans got a chance to participate in the nation’s economic marketplace,” the late Herman Russell, chairman/CEO of the construction company, told Black Enterprise in 2009.

Russell added that his then $ 300 million company would not have been that size if not for Jackson’s policy. Russell added Jackson helped spur black development not only in Atlanta, but also nationally in cities including Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Boston.

Another victory for minority firms under Jackson’s watch came when he helped bring the 1990 Olympics to Atlanta. For instance, $ 10.7 million went to minority suppliers, and over 60% of the minority firms were black. Some BE 100 firms tasted the gold, including construction firms H.J. Russell and C.D. Moody, part of the team that won the $ 209 million Olympic Stadium project.

Illustrating his acumen in business, Jackson in 1987 started Jackson Securities L.L.C. It once was (No. 7 on the BE INVESTMENT BANKS list with $ 1.466 billion in senior/co-senior managed issues). In 1994, Jackson, and his daughter, Brooke Jackson Edmond, and food industry veteran Daniel Halpern, launched Jackmont Hospitality Inc., “He had a passion for being in business with his daughter. It was something he really cared about and enjoyed,” Jackmont President Halpern stated.

Based in Atlanta, Jackmont is a food-service management company and one of the fastest growing TGI Friday’s franchisees. It was No. 19 on the 2018 Top 100s list with $ 200 million in revenue.

In 2003, the same year Jackson died, one of the world’s busiest airports was renamed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as a tribute to him.

3 Miami Dolphins Players Protest During National Anthem at First NFL Game of the Season

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) —Kenny Stills kneeled in protest during the national anthem Thursday, and said he offered a prayer of thanks that he had a teammate’s support.Stills and two other Miami Dolphins renewed their protests before an exhibition game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, triggering yet another round of debate about the divisive NFL issue.

Receivers Stills and Albert Wilson kneeled behind teammates lined up standing along the sideline. Defensive end Robert Quinn stood and raised his right fist, as he did during the anthem last season with the Los Angeles Rams.

Stills said he didn’t coordinate with Wilson, who joined the Dolphins this season.

“It just happened that way,” Stills said. “When I’m on a knee, most of the time I’m praying, and thank God for having Albert next to me. Being a part of this protest hasn’t been easy. I thought I was going to be by myself out there. Today I had an angel with me with Albert being out there. I’m grateful he sees what’s happening, and he wants to do something about it as well.”

Stills kneeled during the anthem in the 2016-17 seasons and has been vocal discussing social injustice issues that inspired the protests by NFL players.

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a leader of the movement, tweeted support for Stills and Wilson.

“My brother @kstills continued his protest of systemic oppression tonight by taking a knee,” the tweet said. “Albert Wilson joined him in protest. Stay strong brothers!”

Kaepernick and his former teammate Eric Reid, another protest leader, remain out of the NFL. Stills said both players were blackballed, and he talks with Kaepernick every week.

“I appreciate his loyalty and support,” Stills said. “I don’t see any reason he and Eric Reid shouldn’t be in the league.”

Wilson said he kneeled mindful of the death of an unarmed black motorist who was shot by police in 2016 near his hometown of Fort Pierce, Florida. Two officers were cleared by a grand jury in the case.

“Getting shot down and being murdered — the biggest thing in my city,” Wilson said. “For me to have so much love for my city and not do anything about it, I would be a coward. I’m with it every Sunday.”

Quinn said it’s slander to say he and kneeling players are protesting the flag.

“As a black man in this world, I’ve got an obligation to raise awareness,” he said. “If no one wants to live in unity, that’s why we’re in the situation we’re in.”

The league and the players’ union have yet to announce a policy for this season regarding demonstrations during the anthem after the league initially ordered everyone to stand on the sideline when “The Star-Spangled Banner” is played, or remain in the locker room. The Dolphins issued a statement before training camp saying all options regarding the team’s policy remain open.

“The NFL has been engaged in constructive discussions with the NFL Players Association regarding the anthem and issues of equality and social justice that are of concern to many Americans,” league spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an email. “While those discussions continue, the NFL has agreed to delay implementing or enforcing any club work rules that could result in players being disciplined for their conduct during the performance of the anthem.

“Meanwhile, there has been no change in the NFL’s policy regarding the national anthem. The anthem will continue to be played before every game, and all player and non-player personnel on the field at that time are expected to stand during the presentation of the flag and performance of the anthem. Personnel who do not wish to do so can choose to remain in the locker room.

“We remain committed to working with the players to identify solutions and to continue making progress on important social issues affecting our communities.”

There were no apparent demonstrations by the Buccaneers.

Quentin Tarantino's next movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, will mix his usual ensemble-heavy pop-culture-infused storytelling with a real-life tragedy. Focused mainly on fictional characters, the feature's backdrop will be Tinseltown in the late 1960s, with a specific link to a true crime involving famous Hollywood players.

One of those celebrities in focus is actress Sharon Tate, wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski and star of such films as Valley of the Dolls and…

Lauryn Hill Launches Her First Fashion Line ‘American Soul Since 1830’

Lauryn Hill is entering the fashion business by fronting her first clothing line in collaboration with Woolrich.

The singer has teamed up with the Pennsylvania-based company for the American Soul Since 1830 collection, which is expected to arrive in Woolrich locations later in 2018, reports Billboard.

Hill worked side-by-side with famed Rihanna stylist Mel Ottenberg for the exclusive 2018 autumn/winter capsule. “These pieces have been part of the American vocabulary for over a hundred years, and they are definitely part of my soul as a stylist, and Lauryn’s identity,” Ottenberg tells British Vogue.

For the jackets from the outerwear collection, Hill designed sui generis pieces celebrating 20 years since her Grammy-winning The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album and featuring collages of Hill and the album cover.

The ex-Fugees member appears in the campaign’s trailer, which shows her heading to the Harlem theater where she shot the Doo Wop (That Thing) video back in 1998. An acoustic Ex-Factor also plays as she traverses NYC’s Washington Heights.

Johnny Manziel’s first CFL start was a disaster

MONTREAL — Johnny Manziel threw an interception — and made a tackle — on his second play in the Canadian Football League. It didn’t get much better after that, with four of his six first-half series ending in interceptions. Seeing regular-season action for first time since December 2015 with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, Manziel fizzled…

All aboard! Preparing for your first cruise

We never thought we would say this, but there comes a time where lazing on a beach gets a little boring. Sure, it’s relaxing for a couple of days, and you get to unwind while sipping pina coladas in the sun, but then you start to realize that you’re wasting your vacation. Where’s the culture? Where’s the history? Staying in the same place for a week or two doesn’t give you the chance to see everything the world has to offer, which is why you need to grab your sea legs and book a cruise. But before you do that, you need to know how to prepare for your first cruise…

Pick the right cruise for you

A cruise is just for elderly people, right? Well, not quite! Nowadays, there are so many cruises and ships for you to choose from. There are cruises for those who want to experience the high life on the high seas, there are cruises that cater for families and young children, there are cruises for those who want to cruise along rivers instead of the ocean, and there are even cruises for those who are obsessed with Disney. Yes, Disney cruises exist! It’s best to really think about what you want from your vacation when you’re picking your cruise because if you don’t like what you choose, you’re kinda stuck on it.

Choose the right package for you

A cruise is very similar to an all-inclusive vacation. You get your transport, your food and even your accommodation included in one full price. However, drinks make things a little more difficult. Depending on the cruise liner, they may allow you to have an unlimited amount of drink included in that price. Yet, there are others who require you to pay for your drinks separately – which means you will need to take currency with you. You need to work out how much you will realistically drink, and whether it’s worth paying more for the all-inclusive package, or whether you just pay-as-you-go.

Plan your port stops

One of the greatest things about a cruise is that you can wake up in a different destination every single day, and you have a full day of exploring somewhere new and exciting. Because of this, it’s best to plan your ports before you get on the ship. Grab your travel itinerary and look at when you will be docking and leaving each day. This way, you can work out where you want to go, where you want to explore the most, and how long you have in that destination. This will you will be prepared for every single day without wondering if you’ll be left behind.

Check out the dress code

Although cruises aren’t all like The Titanic, some cruises do expect you to dress up to the nines like Rose. The financier cruises will enforce a certain dress code when you enter the dining hall, and it may be that you won’t be allowed in if you’re wearing shorts or if you’re wearing a certain type of shoe. If you love making yourself look pretty, this will be perfect for you! On the other hand, there are other cruises that are much more relaxed and allow their guests to wear what they want. Most cruises meet in the middle, though, and ask their guests to dress up for one night of the week, which is called the ‘Captain’s Dinner.’

If you’re looking to book your first cruise, we’re kinda jealous. You will have the vacation of a lifetime! Nevertheless, it is important that you understand what you’re booking before you enter your credit cards, as every single cruise is different. Make sure you pick the right one for what you want.

‘Married at First Sight’ Recap: Who Drops the L-Word?

Well, that was fast! Tristan Thompson told Mia Bally that he loved her within one week of being married during the Tuesday, July 31, episode of Married at First Sight. Also, see which couple almost called it quits after a nightmare salsa lesson that ended in a religious debate.

Tristan Tells Mia He Loves Her
Mia had some explaining to do to Tristan. It was revealed this week that she lied about her arrest. She previously stated it was a mistaken identity that caused her arrest, but in fact, the accuser was one of her exes.

“She lied to me and I feel betrayed,” Tristan said. “I’m just not sure if im able to stay in this marriage.”

However, the two worked it out, thanks to their unconditional love. Tristan even told Mia that he loved her, and she revealed the two had sex even though she was previously reserved physically. “He’s my rock. I’ve been more physical than I would in any other relationship ever,” Mia said.

Danielle Makes the First Move

Bobby and Danielle married at first sight

Danielle Bergman and Bobby Dodd haven’t had any struggles in their relationship thus far. They had great chemistry and were waiting until the right time to have sex.

“We’re just going to do what feels right,” Bobby said. “Sex should just happen.”

Danielle finally decided to make the first move and make it happen. She said she usually isn’t a leader, but was so attracted to Bobby that she stepped outside of her comfort zone. Bobby did make a comment that he’s into spur of the moment romance, so it seemed to be his style.

“We freaking did it on the honeymoon,” Danielle blushed as she told the camera.

Amber and Dave Butt Heads … Again

Amber and David married at first sight
Amber and David Lifetime

Dave Flaherty and Amber Martorana aren’t exactly doing great. It all started going south when Dave had a major meltdown at a salsa lesson. He was not into dancing said he wanted to “kill himself” during the lesson. “My arms are going to start throwing punches … I’m f–king done with this,” he said.

Amber was not into her husband’s behavior, but tried to play it cool. “Watching Dave overreact today, it’s hard for me to see. We’re supposed to be doing this to bond and have a good time, and I’m just feeling really uncomfortable,” she said.

That wasn’t the end of the bad date. At dinner, they brought up their religious values. Dave is pretty religious while Amber is not. She brought up her concerns when the topic came up, saying it was a “bigger issue” for Dave than her, and adding that many people who are religious are “hypocritical.” In response, he called her “judgmental.”

However, when he asked if she wanted to walk away from the marriage because of their different views, she said she wanted to be with him.

Married at First Sight (produced by Kinetic Content) airs on Lifetime Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
