Spice Girls send fans wild with first look at incredible 90s-style Spice World reunion tour stage

THE Spice Girls have revealed the incredible retro stage that will greet excited fans attending their reunion Spice World tour.

Baby Spice Emma, 43, yesterday posted a snap of the extravagant stage layout – that harks back to the Spice Girls’ 90s heyday.

The Spice Girls, minus Posh Spice Victoria, will take to the stage together on Friday[/caption]

The photo, which Emma posted on twitter, shows a huge globe in the centre of the stage with a banner reading “Spice World” across the middle.

It also reveals the dazzling array of lights and lasers that will be used to give fans an eyeful during the much-anticipated reunion gigs.

Wings on either side of the stage have huge screens above them that will show the girls performing in all their glory.

It comes as the Spice Girls – minus Posh Spice Victoria Beckham – prepare for their gig at Dublin’s Croke Park on Friday.

The Spice Girls are touring together for the first time in a decade[/caption]

Releasing the behind-the-scenes snap yesterday, Emma wrote: “Spice World production rehearsals done! Roll on Friday.”

Fans reacted with glee – with one writing: “Omg the stage is AMAZING!!!!! I think it’s the best stage yet, out of all of the Spice Girls tours!”

Another said: “I died a little”, while one US fan wrote: “I REALLY hope it comes to America.”

Emma is reuniting on stage with her bandmates Mel C, Mel B and Geri Horner – although Victoria Beckham won’t be taking part.

The tour is named Spice World – a nod to the girls’ 1997 comedy music movie.

Our relationship is really good. We’ve all been really positive, so it’s nice

Geri Horner

The highly anticipated return of the biggest girl group ever is tipped as the entertainment event of the year.

But it comes amid rumours of friction between the girls – especially since Mel B claimed during a recording of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories that she had an historic lesbian fling with Geri.

Earlier, Geri, 46, hit back after rumours of fighting between the group.

Asked what she thought of all the band’s critics, she told The Sun: “You think, ‘Oh f*** off!’.”

She also disputed there is a split in the band, saying: “Our relationship is really good.

“We’ve all been really positive, so it’s nice. It’s natural. I’m really happy, everyone’s happy.”

Japan just sent a privately-funded rocket into space for the first time ever

japan rocket launch

SpaceX is already a household name around the globe, but there’s no shortage of other startups vying for their slice of the private spaceflight pie. Companies like the Jeff Bezos-led Blue Origin are doing some pretty impressive things, and a relatively new startup out of Japan just hit a big milestone as well.

The company, named Interstellar Technologies Inc, launched its MOMO-3 rocket into space over the weekend, reaching an altitude of over 100 kilometers before running out of steam and tumbling back down to Earth. The rocket, which is part of the company’s long-term plan of providing satellite launch services to commercial partners, is built using many parts that are readily available from a variety of manufacturers.

How I Landed My First TEDx Talk and How You Can Too

I often get asked this question by other entrepreneurs; “How did you get to do a TEDx talk?” My answer is simple, I pitched my idea, and after submitting my speech to the TEDx committee, I was selected as a speaker. Here are strategies you can use to share your idea and how to avoid the mistakes that I made that almost prevented me from reaching the TEDx stage.

How to Land a TEDx Talk

Shoot your shot

My goal in 2018 was to give a TEDx talk. I thought I had my talk figured out. My first talk was going to cover utilizing the power of innovation to help prevent military veteran suicides.

Although I considered myself a subject matter expert, having recently developed an award-winning mobile application that helps veterans access life-saving resources, my talk wasn’t well thought out. I pitched a local TEDx event and made it to the top seventh pick. However, I was not selected to speak and was encouraged to pitch the following year again. I was devastated, to make it that far and not have an opportunity to share my ideas.

Rather than soaking in despair, I kept the TEDx goal on my whiteboard hoping to have the opportunity to pitch my idea for another TEDx conference. In speaking with a colleague in the industry, I randomly shared an idea that I wanted to talk about. To my surprise, my colleague said my idea was a great topic to speak about and advised me to send in a speaker proposal for a TEDx event —”Shoot my shot” were her exact words. To my amazement, I was finally selected as a TEDx speaker.

Develop your idea

The TEDx organizers develop a theme for every TEDx event. Your speaking topic should reflect the theme of the event. Alter your TEDx pitch around the theme and you stand a better chance of securing your spot on the TEDx stage. TEDx themes are readily accessible on their event website.

If TEDx has been your goal, continue to stay encouraged. You never know who you will meet and present an idea to that might end with you speaking on the TEDx stage.

What are the differences between flying economy and first class?

Some may have had the luxury of experiencing the grandeur of first class, but for others, it remains a great mystery. If you have already been fortunate enough to turn left into the exclusive cabin then you know how wonderful the experience can be, but if you are yet to fly first class, then the encounter is still just a little sneak-peek behind the red curtain before you’re told to return to your economy seat. Peasants!

However saying all this, the golden ticket to first class does come with a considerably costlier price tag, so we want to put it up for debate as to whether it is actually worth it. Let’s discuss the differences between flying economy and first class.

Photo: Unsplash.com

Do you get the star-treatment?

As a first-class traveler, you’ll be offered access to a first class lounge, where you will have a space to grab a pre-flight drink, relax, and unwind before boarding. Here you’ll enjoy the time away from the busy and overcrowded areas from economy class queuing. You’ll also board the plane as a priority before the economy-class passengers.

Depending on the airline and the type of ticket you hold, you might be offered other premiums like your own private lounge space, concierge service, meals and snacks, and even showering amenities. If the hustle and bustle of pre-flight organization causes you stress, then getting a first-class ticket just for the quiet calm of a lounge might be worth it. On top of all this, the beverages are usually free too…

What food and drink is on offer?

Offers vary across different airlines, but if you are flying long-haul, then you will be offered unlimited meals and drinks at no charge. A special high-quality menu is provided to first-class passengers, with the food tasting significantly better than most meals provided in economy-class. Some services even offer formal tableware for that extra luxury experience.

Do you get extra comfort?

A lengthier long-haul flight usually means you’ll more than likely be having a nap at some point, so are the first class seats really that much comfier for you to feel cozily at home? Well, it all depends. Airplane models vary with the design of the cabin, but all first-class tickets will offer a seat with more legroom and a bigger, wider, and comfier chair.

If you want to pay that little bit extra, there are also first-class private suites available with luxury features such as a sliding privatized door, a large touch screen TV, storage space, and even a chair that reclines into a bed.

Photo: Unsplash.com

Is it worth the price?

The answer to that question depends on several factors – the length of the flight, the airline you are flying with, the benefits on offer, and most importantly, the price you are paying. If you are able and willing to pay the extra cost, then perhaps the perks and privileges may well be worth it.

However, always remember that there may be opportunities for you to fly first class without having to pay the price. Sometimes an airline may offer a discounted upgrade, and frequent flyers can use their miles to upgrade too. It’s always a good decision to take your chances and ask about the upgrade options at the check-in desk. You never know what they might have up their sleeves for you…

First Impressions 101: How to Introduce Yourself & Others

It’s a fact of life that most of us operate within a number of different social circles. Many of us will socialize with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and so on and often, these social circles are largely kept separate, not necessarily intentionally, of course, but simply by way of the fact that they wouldn’t have much reason to naturally come together or commingle in most circumstances.

Still, there are situations where those different social spheres will come together; parties, weddings, funerals, and so on and in those situations, given that you may be the person that knows both people from different circles, it’ll be your responsibility to introduce those people to one another hence we’ve created today’s guide on how to approach the exercise of introductions with class and tact as befits a gentleman.

Neighborhood block party
Neighborhood block party

The Importance Of Introductions

By introducing people at a gathering who don’t know each other, everyone will generally feel more at ease in the social situation and people will be able to converse more comfortably. Phrased another way, the purpose of introducing people is to give them an opportunity to get to know each other. Here’s an added benefit, by performing a proper introduction, the introduced parties will reflect on you positively and see you as a socially adept individual. Never a bad thing!

Pre-Intro Considerations

Firstly, it’s important to find a proper opening and to get your timing right; after all, you don’t want to embarrass yourself by accidentally introducing the wrong people to each other or by interrupting a flowing or serious conversation with an introduction. For example, if your boss is in the middle of a business discussion at an event, butting in to introduce them to a friend will seem out of place and improper.

The art of introduction
The art of introduction

Etiquette Conventions of Formal Introductions

The basic protocol of formal introductions calls for introducing a lesser ranking person to a higher ranking person. These rankings are generally determined by things like age, job title, or how long you’ve personally known one of the individuals in question. The higher ranking individual’s name should always come first in an introduction.

Steps To A Formal Introduction

  1. State the name of the person being introduced to. In other words, state the name of the higher ranking individual.
  2. Say something like “I would like to introduce” or “Please meet” or a similar phrase.
  3. State the name of the person being introduced. In other words, this is the name of the lower ranking individual.
  4. Mention one or two small details to get the conversation between the two individuals started. Don’t give away too much so that they don’t have anything to talk about but just get a detail out there so things can get flowing.

Now let’s put all of that together with a few examples:

  • You may, for instance, be introducing an older person to a younger person; you could say something like “Grandma, this is my friend, Will. He and I just completed a project together in Chemistry.”
  • You could be introducing a senior professional to a junior professional; something like “Mr. President, this is our new data analyst, Ms. Johnson.”
  • You could be introducing a host to a guest; something like “Mrs. Adams, this is my daughter, Janet, she just returned from a ski trip in Colorado.”
  • If the two people you are introducing to one another are of equal status, it’s purely up to you which person’s name you want to list first, it’s that easy.
  • If you are performing an introduction between one person and a group of multiple people, follow the same ranking system we outlined before but just make sure to list the names of each person in the group individually, that way, no one will feel minimized or left out. Here’s an example of that one in action; “Director Miller, I would like to introduce our Engineering team, this is Tom White, Amy Nakamura, and Kendall Thompson, all three of them participated in our conference on Wednesday.”

Casual Introductions

If you’re in a more casual situation, a full formal introduction isn’t always necessary or even practical. Still, you should generally try to follow the overall guidelines of introducing the higher ranking person to the lower ranking person. Let’s say, for example, that you’re a few rows apart in the stands at a basketball game, obviously, it’s not going to be practical to do a handshake or really have a conversation at that point in time but a smile, a friendly wave, and just exchanging names should be enough. Then, if you find yourselves in a situation where you can have a more full conversation later, take the opportunity to do so.

Body Language & Social Cues

Look at the person you’re speaking to first then turn to the other person as you complete the introduction. You should make an effort to make eye contact with both individuals that are part of the introduction. Speak clearly, of course, and don’t mumble. Mumbling is just going to reflect poorly on you as the person conducting the introduction. As we’ve already mentioned, use courteous language. May I introduce or “I’d like you to meet” are good examples of a lead-in for an introduction. “May I present” is going to be your most formal option.

In more formal situations or when there’s an obvious age difference between parties, using courtesy titles and last names is going to be more polite than just using first names. After all, once they get talking, the people you are introducing can make the decision to use first names themselves and even when you are using first names, try to include last names as well. Not only is it more polite but it also aids in memory retention for those people being introduced.

Chris Evans all smiles

Also, teach children to use the titles of adults rather than simply their first names unless an adult specifically requests that only their first name be used. For example, something like “Mrs. Rosen, this is my niece, Kayla. Kayla, this is Mrs. Rosen”. This brings up a good point about repetition, though, only when introducing children to adults should you reverse and repeat the introduction; as in “X this is y, y this is X”, otherwise, reversing and repeating can make the introductions seem a little tedious. In order to make sure that everyone remembers everyone else’s names, just use names organically as the conversation continues.

Finally here, let’s cover what to do if you find yourself having forgotten someone’s name in the middle of an introduction; after all, it does happen. The best course of action is simply to politely excuse yourself and say “I’m sorry, would you please remind me of your name?” and if you find yourself repeatedly blanking on someone’s name, be a little bit sneaky. Take the two people and simply say, “Have the two of you met?” then you can sort of prompt the two people to say their names for one another. This is a little bit risky, however, and it won’t always work so it’s a tactic that’s best avoided. In general, honesty is the best policy.

If You Are The One Being Introduced

First, stand and face the person in question. This makes it easier to maintain eye contact and shake hands and presents you as equals in the introduction. If a person is unable to stand, of course, just politely lean to their level. Don’t forget to smile, give a firm but not crushing handshake, and let go promptly. There are a few things more awkward than somebody who hangs on too long after a handshake and finally, after the introduction has been completed, give a pleasant greeting to the person to whom you’ve been introduced, “I’m very pleased to meet you” is an easy choice.

Introducing Yourself To Others

If you know the person’s name and title, it’s best to use it. Something like “Mr. Jones, my name is Michael Wilson. It’s a pleasure to meet you” and if you’d like to introduce yourself but you don’t know the person’s name, you can just lead with yours. Something like “Hi, I’m Preston Schlueter. I thought I’d like to get to know you”. As with before, don’t forget the smile, eye contact, and firm handshake.

CONCLUSION

Knowing all of these rules, all types of introductions should be a breeze for you. You’ll look good to the people whom you’re introducing and they should hopefully be able to start up a conversation with little to no effort.

We’d like to know, do you already use any of these introduction techniques and do you have any more that we might have? Whatever the case may be, share with us in the comments section below!

Suitsupply Opens First Store in Paris

PARIS — Suitsupply has landed in France.
A stone’s throw from the Paris Opera, the Amsterdam-based men’s wear retailer has opened its first French store on Rue de La Paix in the 2nd arrondissement.
The 6,450-square-foot space, which was unveiled to the public on Thursday, will carry Suitsupply’s full collections, spanning men’s tailoring, outerwear, shoes and accessories, including the retailer’s newest style, a lightweight silk and wool blend suit, which was debuted in the Paris flagship.
“The decision to open in Paris was a no-brainer, as a big chunk of our online sales come from France,” said founder and chief executive officer Fokke de Jong.
“The French have an ingrained sense of elegance; they approach tailoring in an effortless way,” he continued. “We focus on the more elegant side of men’s fashion — basically, everything that has a jacket on. I think that will resonate well with the French customer.”
The privately held company chose to acknowledge the difficult timing of the opening, which comes a month after the Notre Dame fire: All sales made on the store’s opening day went to the Notre Dame restoration fund.

Kryst is a civil litigation attorney who received her law degree and MBA from Wake Forest University. During the pageant, fans of Kryst noticed that she wore her natural hair and unlike prior contests, she joined Garris in bypassing the need to straighten their hair in favor of their natural look.

Garris spoke to Refinery21 about her decision saying, “There were a few naysayers saying, ‘You look better with straight hair,’ or ‘You should put in extensions and straighten your natural hair. As Miss Connecticut Teen USA, there are girls who would look at me in awe because they’ve always had the image of straight hair in pageants. Being able to spread the message of diversity, being yourself, and being confident in your curly, natural hair is something that I’m really looking forward to with my new national title.”

The closest Black women had to completing the trifecta before last night was in 2012 when Black women simultaneously wore crowns as Miss Teen USA and Miss USA.

Congrats ladies!

Dennis Basso Opens First Store in Qatar

An outdoor plaza shopping center anchored by Galeries Lafayette is the home to Dennis Basso’s first store in Doha.
Basso’s 1,800-square-foot unit is near the Cartier, Graff and Van Cleef & Arpels boutiques. Back in New York, the designer said Friday that he hopes this first store will lead to others in the Midde East. The opening was made possible through the Ali Bin Ali Holding company. Designed by Ali Bin Ali’s in-house team, Basso said the decor consists of a range of cream-colored interiors with pale gray marble and vaulted high ceilings. It is also a corner store, which allows for greater visibility, enhanced by the valet car service offered near the store’s entrance.
One of the greatest features from the designer’s point of view is the outdoor air conditioning provided by cool air that is blasted upward through grates. While Qatari woman generally wear abayas and head scarves on the street, their attire tends to be more colorful or embellished when at home, at special events or traveling. “When they’re going to a gala, they really want to be gala,” Basso said, adding that his collection was well-received at the launch, which included a dinner and an in-store event.

The two sisters, who built their brand of romantic, Victorian-inspired prairie blouses and dresses through a collective of female tastemakers and social media reach, also shared that they will be opening their first permanent brick-and-mortar retail store this summer at Brentwood Country Mart.
“We just got the keys today,” said Katherine, twinning with Margaret in Dôen all-white dresses on the rooftop of the Venice, Calif., restaurant. “We’re very excited to be in Irene Neuwirth’s company,” she said of the L.A. jewelry designer’s new store in the retail center, where Dôen had a pop-up store last year.

Snapchat Gets Its First Black C-Suite Executive

Snap, the company that makes Snapchat, just named Kenny Mitchell as its new chief marketing officer. From the looks of Snap’s C-suite roster, it seems Mitchell is the company’s first African American corporate officer. Snap does have African American representation on its board—McAfee CEO Christopher Young joined its board in October 2016.

Previously, Mitchell was the vice president of brand content and engagement for McDonald’s USA. He also was the head of consumer engagement at Gatorade. While at Gatorade he led the effort to introduce Snapchat vertical video and augmented reality tools as part of the company’s consumer marketing strategy.

Some of the memorable Gatorade campaigns he was involved with include Gatorade’s Dunk AR Lens for the Super Bowl—an award-winning ad; and the Serena Williams Snap Ad game, another award-winner.

He has held other executive positions at NASCAR and Dew Tour, a division of NBC Sports Group.

He will report directly to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel. In a press release, Spiegel commented on Mitchell’s hiring;

“Kenny’s consumer marketing expertise and his deep understanding of our products will be a great combination for Snap. Throughout his career, Kenny has demonstrated his ability to successfully execute innovative, global marketing campaigns, many of which have leveraged our own vertical video and augmented reality products. He’s a natural fit to join our team and lead marketing as we continue driving the positive momentum we have in the business.”

“Snap is a great company with strong values, an inspired vision and innovative products that are empowering its global community,” Mitchell said in a press release.

“I look forward to helping Evan and Snap continue to tell their story to people around the world, and working with my new colleagues as we define the future of the camera and self-expression.”

Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and a Master of Business Administration from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business.

In 2017, the Snap CEO was accused of insensitive remarks in a lawsuit filed by a former employee. The lawsuit alleged Speigel said about the Snapchat app, “This app is only for rich people. I don’t want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain. Mr. Spiegel would not entertain any further discussion on the matter.”

Snap called the allegations “ridiculous,” and the accuser a “disgruntled employee,” at the time.

Signs His Work Will Always Come First

There’s nothing wrong with an ambitious partner. In fact, ambition is one of the things I find most attractive in a man and is a requirement, in fact, for me, in a partner. I equate ambition with passion so a man without ambition is also a man without passion and that is nobody I want to be near. But, to be ambitious only serves us to a certain point. We have to remember that the entire reason we are ambitious is so we can acquire a level of stability so that, from there, we can enjoy the things that really matter like family and relationships. Some men get so caught up in the means to the end that they don’t pause to appreciate the end when they get there. What I mean is that some men don’t even enjoy things like love and family once they have it, and you don’t really want to spend your life with someone like that. Here are early signs his work will always come first.

He’s often absent-minded

You have to ask him often if he’s listening. He wasn’t. He “Had a lot on his mind” so you have to repeat yourself. You can’t usually get his attention in a conversation without asking him, multiple times, if he’s okay or if he’s listening. His work consumes his mind.

Damian Lillard’s Epic Victory Stare Is the Real Winner of the First Round of Playoffs

After Damian Lillard sank a thrilling, nearly 40-foot buzzer-beater to clinch the Portland Trail Blazers’ round one victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs on Tuesday night, he commemorated the win by leveling a stone cold stare at the TV cameras.

Lillard’s composed assurance after making the game-winning three point shot that effectively sent home the Thunder, 118-115, was a contrast to both his teammates and fans, who immediately started a raucous celebration.

As might be expected, the Internet loved Dame’s cool reaction to the win almost as much as they loved the Trail Blazer’s immensely satisfying win over Oklahoma City and immediately took to social media, giving Lillard the meme treatment.

While Lillard and the Trail Blazers will have to wait until a winner emerges from the San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets series to see who they’ll be facing in the second round of the NBA playoffs, that gives you plenty of time to catch up on the best memes of Lillard’s stone cold victory stare, below.

Kevin Feige ‘got chills’ when Avengers assembled for first time

OHMYGOSSIP — Kevin Feige says he “got chills” when the Avengers assembled for the first time.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ is released Thursday (25.04.19) and will wrap up 21 films and 11 franchises taking place over a decade, and will complete phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Marvel Studios President explained that he knew the franchise would be a success while making 2012’s ‘The Avengers’ – when the movies heroes were brought together for the first time – and praised the film’s director Joss Whedon for “pulling it off” and creating an “iconic moment” in cinema.
Speaking in a video for Rotten Tomatoes, he said: “That shot, the shot of all the Avengers assembling for the first time, was so much spectacle, so many visual effects
“It was filmed in an open air warehouse in New Mexico, not in New York. There was nothing but green screen behind them.
“Hulk wasn’t in the shot. Iron Man wasn’t in the shot because they were CG and put in later, but it looked pretty cool and Joss had a great vision for it.
“Cut too many months later, the visual effects are coming together, it’s starting to look cool, Iron Man’s now landing, Hulk’s there.
” But the moment when I realised that this could be an iconic moment not just for the MCU, but for these kinds of films, was on the mix stage.
“You get the experience of watching the final playback on the mix stage with Silvestri’s amazing score building to that moment and I got chills. And I realised Joss had pulled it off.”
But while the studio had “high expectations” for the franchise, Kevin admitted it still went beyond their “wildest” projections.
“We had high expectations for what the movie could be and the way the audience responded and the box office numbers behind it exceeded even our wildest expectations.”

PayPal Exec, Peggy Alford, Poised to Become First Black Woman to Sit on Facebook’s Board

Peggy Alford, the senior vice president, core markets at PayPal—has been tapped to serve on Facebook’s board of directors—and is in position to become the first black woman to sit on its board.

Alford has the backing of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In a released statement the Facebook founder said, “Peggy is one of those rare people who’s an expert across many different areas — from business management to finance operations to product development. I know she will have great ideas that help us address both the opportunities and challenges facing our company.”

She has been with PayPal since 2019 and also was the chief financial officer and head of operations for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative—a philanthropic organization founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his spouse Priscilla Chan.

A Silicon Valley veteran, Alford has also held executive positions at eBay and Rent.com. She hails from a family of six children. Her mother has a doctorate’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Alford has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration from the University of Dayton in Ohio where she ran track and cross country. Focused on her career for much of her life, she had her first child at 41 and her second when she was 45. In an interview posted on PayPal’s website she spoke about work-life balance, “Balance can be extremely difficult for working mothers trying to find that happy medium of continuing to advance their careers and doing what they feel they need to do at home. Often women will opt out or feel like they can’t seek out that next big opportunity because it may take away from their responsibilities at home.”

“What excites me about the opportunity to join Facebook’s board is the company’s drive and desire to face hard issues head-on while continuing to improve on the amazing connection experiences they have built over the years,” she said in a statement. “I look forward to working with Mark and the other directors as the company builds new and inspiring ways to help people connect and build community.”

Alford will still have to be voted to the board during the next Facebook shareholders’ meeting. Typically, nominees, particularly ones supported by a company’s CEO are appointed to the board so her position as a board member is likely.

Upon her official appointment, Alford would be the second African American on Facebook’s board. Last year, retired American Express CEO Ken Chenault joined the social media company’s board. Zuckerberg said at the time that he has been trying to recruit Chenault “for years.”

Alford is on the Black Enterprise 2018 Registry of Corporate Directors for her role as a member of the board of The Macerich Co., a real estate investment trust.

Mulvaney: Trump Brought Down Drug Prices For The First Time In 50 Years

President Donald Trump announced last month that the GOP will become “the party of health care,” and news reports suggest he intends to make it a top issue in his reelection campaign.

So when Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, touted the administration’s work on prescription drug prices — a hot-button issue that has drawn scrutiny from across the political spectrum, and one that voters say should be a top priority — we were intrigued.

On “Fox News Sunday” April 7, Mulvaney said: “Drug prices in this country actually came down last year for the first time in 50 years. That’s because Donald Trump’s president.”

This statement is particularly hard to prove affirmatively. Drug prices are measured through a host of metrics and affected by all sorts of political and economic forces.

We reached out to the White House for more explanation. Its staff directed us to a report published last October by its Council of Economic Advisers, as well as to data suggesting the consumer price index for prescription drugs declined in January 2019 compared with January 2018.

But experts who reviewed that data said it doesn’t necessarily support Mulvaney’s claim — and certainly not by the magnitude he suggests.

A Broad Brush, And Some Missing Data

We interviewed five experts who all agreed that, no matter which metric was used, evidence is lacking to unequivocally say drug prices decreased last year. The most generous reading came from Matthew Fiedler, a health economist at the Brookings Institution: It’s “within spitting distance of something that’s true.”

But with more examination, the claim’s veracity became murkier.

“Drug prices” can refer to many things: a list price, a net price (what is paid after rebates, or the discounts negotiated by insurers or other payers), the pharmacy’s price or total national spending on prescription drugs.

Let’s start with the latter. Data from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows total spending on prescription drug prices has climbed during the past several years. (KHN is an editorially independent program of the foundation.) In 2018, total spending continued to grow, just at a slower pace. That’s a positive trend, experts noted, but it isn’t the same thing as spending going down.

“It doesn’t mean we’re spending less money on drugs than before,” said Stacie Dusetzina, an associate professor of health policy at Vanderbilt University.

We also examined the CPI data the White House provided. It could suggest that in the past year prescription drugs’ list prices have indeed dropped, and even by a meaningful amount.

But the CPI data doesn’t account for whether manufacturers lowering their list prices have also changed the size of the rebates they provide. That’s essential information in understanding if the real price of a drug — what insurance pays and, ultimately, what consumers pay — has actually changed.

These trend lines also vary depending on the 12-month period they cover, argued Walid Gellad, an associate health policy professor at the University of Pittsburgh. January to January could show a list price decrease, but July to July could show an increase.

Plus, the CPI data includes only drugs sold through retail, or about three-fourths of all prescriptions. That excludes many high-priced specialty meds sold only via mail order, argued Michael Rea, who heads Rx Savings Solutions, a consulting firm.

It also paints with a broad brush — obscuring, many said, just how many list prices are continuing to climb.

This year, the list price of more than 3,000 drugs went up, while the price of only 117 went down, according to data compiled by Rx Savings Solutions. Last year, an analysis by the Associated Press revealed that, from January to July, 4,412 branded drug prices went up, while 46 were cut.

So, Mulvaney’s downward price claim didn’t come out of thin air. But interpreting the data to mean that drug prices are down ignores crucial parts of the prescription drug marketplace.

The White House’s Work

Mulvaney also said Trump has played a key role in bringing down drug prices. When we asked the administration what he meant, a spokesman pointed to their efforts to bring more generic drugs to market — a boost the White House said has fueled competition and helped make lower-price alternatives available to consumers.

But there’s no evidence yet to suggest that the boost in generic drug approvals has that effect. Experts said it takes time for these products to reach the marketplace, create competition and demonstrate a measurable impact on prices.

Indeed, many of those generics, while approved, never went to market. This White House assertion also doesn’t account for high-priced, branded drugs that lack a generic counterpart.

Yes, Trump’s tough talk — accusing pharma companies of “getting away with murder” — may have persuaded some drug manufacturers to hold off on increasing their prices — at least temporarily, or until after the government releases key stats on how many prices have gone up, Dusetzina said. But it’s hard to separate that phenomenon from the pressure also levied by Congress and state legislatures.

For what it’s worth, the administration has proposed many new policies meant to curb drug prices, many noted, such as eliminating some kinds of rebates, or changing how Medicare Part B pays for drugs. But none of those have taken effect — so they haven’t brought prices down.

Our Ruling

Mulvaney said, “Drug prices in this country actually came down last year for the first time in 50 years. That’s because Donald Trump’s president.”

At first glance, CPI data could conceivably support the argument that the list prices for some prescription drugs dipped. But that data doesn’t include many high-priced specialty drugs that drive costs up, and the pattern it illustrates can change based on the time frame selected.

The CPI data set obscures the individual drugs for which the list prices have increased — with far more going up than down. It also does not account for a drug’s true “net price.”

Mulvaney’s statement also does not reflect trends showing that, nationally, spending on drugs has continued to climb, even if that growth has slowed. There is also no evidence to support the argument that Trump himself is responsible for changes in drug pricing.

This claim has an element of truth, but it ignores key facts and context that would give a very different impression. We rate this claim Mostly False.

We may be just days away from seeing a black hole for the first time ever

first black hole photo

For how much astronomers know about black holes — it’s a lot, trust me — it’s a bit of a shock that mankind has never actually seen one. Everything science knows about black holes is based on inference rather than actually witnessing one with our own eyes (electronic or otherwise), but that may be about to change.

The Event Horizon Telescope project plans to reveal the first-ever images of a black hole, and the international group of researchers working on the project have something very big to show the world this week. We may be just days away from seeing a black hole for the first time ever.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Chicago’s First Black Woman Mayor, Lori Lightfoot

A black woman makes political history again: On Tuesday, Lori Lightfoot became Chicago’s first black woman mayor.

Lightfoot achieves another milestone as the first openly gay mayor of a large city. The Chicago mayoral race was closely watched around the country. There were two black women in the race—Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle—in a political battle that at times became contentious.

Yet, Lightfoot emerged the victor. In a statement to the press, DNC Chair Tom Perez commented on Lightfoot’s win:

“This historic win reaffirms that our diversity is our greatest strength, and that our elected leaders should reflect the diversity of the communities they represent. I look forward to working with Mayor-elect Lightfoot as she fights to build a brighter future for all. The people of Chicago will be well served with her leadership.”

Those outside the gritty world of Chicago politics may not be too familiar with the Mayor-elect. Here are five things you may not have known about Lori Lightfoot.

She grew up in Ohio from humble beginnings.

In an interview with The Chicago Tribune, Lightfoot mentioned that her parents migrated from the South to Ohio. Her father was from a sharecropper family. When she was a girl, her father contracted pneumonia that turned into spinal meningitis. Her father spent time in a coma. The doctors told her mother not to bother to “waste money on medicine,” because her father would not recover. He did, although he became deaf from meningitis.

She is an attorney.

Lightfoot earned a law degree from the University of Chicago for which she received a scholarship to attend. She worked as a federal prosecutor and served in several high-profile civil positions, including chair of the Police Accountability Task Force, and president of the Chicago Police Board. Before running for mayor, she left her position as a law partner at Mayer Brown.

She is married.

The 56-year-old lives in the Northwest side of Chicago with her spouse, Amy Eshleman. They have a 10-year-old daughter.

Chicago police reform is a priority on her agenda.

Lightfoot was part of a task force that looked into police misconduct after the shooting death of black teenager Laquan McDonald at the hands of white policeman Jason Van Dyke. According to her website, her plans for police reform include: Ensuring full and swift compliance with the consent decree; implementing civilian oversight of police; improving police training and accountability; and reducing police misconduct.

She said that the way the Jussie Smollett case was handled, raises “serious questions.”

During a debate with Preckwinkle, Lightfoot said that the dropping of all charges against Smollet merited a “fulsome explanation.” She also expressed concern over State Attorney Kim Foxx’s decision to seal the records on the Smollett case.

Apparently, Kate first spotted William when they were 9 years old

The story of the royal couple dates back longer than we thought

kate william first meet
Credit: Scott Garfitt/REX/Shutterstock

It’s a commonly known fact that Kate and William were first introduced to each other as students at the University of St. Andrews (in case you want to brush up on the unofficial facts, the Lifetime movie William & Kate: The Movie tells the romanticised version of how the two met).

Well it turns out, we haven’t actually been told the full story. The Duchess of Cambridge reportedly first spotted her husband-to-be during a hockey match at her prep school when they both just nine years old. At least, that’s what royal correspondent Katie Nicholl writes in her book Kate: The Future Queen.

prince william kate middleton takeaway

James Gourley/BPI/REX/Shutterstock

‘Although [Kate] wasn’t especially interested in boys, the arrival of one particular young man had caught her attention. Nearby Ludgrove Prep school would often play matches against St. Andrew’s Prep, and there was much excitement when Prince William, a left back on Ludgrove’s Colts team, came to St. Andrew’s to play a hockey match when he was nine years old.’

‘William, like Kate, loved sports and was one of the best hockey and rugby players in his year. Of course, the arrival of the prince generated a flurry of excitement,’ she added. ‘It was the first time Kate had set her eyes on the young prince, but certainly not the last.’

Well, that’s just lovely!

‘Married At First Sight’ Recap: Which Couples Stayed Together?

The day has finally arrived! The Married At First Sight couples had to decide to stay married or get a divorce during the Tuesday, April 2 episode.

For some couples, their fate seemed pretty obvious, and their decisions didn’t come as too much of a shock. However, there was a definitely one complete twist that no one saw coming.

Ahead of the big day, the couples had to spend the night apart and really think about what they were going to do. It seemed like, for some, that night changed everything they thought about their marriage.

Decision day is never easy, but after the tumultuous season, no one could be sure that their partner was going to agree with them when it came time to face the experts. Each couple definitely had their issues in their marriage.

Keith Dewar definitely wasn’t used to stepping up and making someone else happy, as he was always used to being the baby – something Kristine Killingsworth wasn’t thrilled about. Jasmine McGriff and Will Guess also struggled with having different norms when it came to their styles of living. Jasmine wanted to be taken care of, while Will wanted a 50/50 marriage, which definitely caused tension.

Kate Sisk and Luke Cuccurullo, on the other hand, were probably the ones who struggled the most this season. From Luke accusing Kate of being an alcoholic to him admitting he wasn’t attracted to her, he definitely didn’t make it easy. Oh, not to mention that shocking twist where they admitted they had been having sex all season without telling anyone.

One of the couples that caused the most onscreen drama was AJ Vollmoeller and Stephanie Sersen. AJ had several blowups this season, which he blamed on producers and the show in general, that seriously freaked out his wife.

Find out who stayed together, and who decided to call it quits below!

Tom Brady’s First Ever Tweet Was an April Fools Joke

(FOXBOROUGH, Mass.) — Don’t. Even. Joke.

New England Patriots fans who forgot that Monday is April Fools’ Day might have been panicking when quarterback Tom Brady tweeted that he had decided to retire.

The six-time Super Bowl champion has joined Twitter and his first post said simply: “I’m retiring. In my spare time, I’ll be tweeting.” An email from a Twitter spokeswoman confirmed the account, but it also referred to the fact that the tweet came on April Fools’ Day.

About an hour later, Brady sent out a second tweet that said, “Was this a bad joke?”

Brady is a 41-year-old, three-time NFL MVP who has to stop playing some time. But after leading New England to the title last year, there’s no indication that he’s slowing down.

And anyway, is this how he would announce it?

Even tight end Rob Gronkowski, who actually retired last month, did so with a lengthy Instagram post.

Neither Brady’s agent nor the Patriots immediately responded to emails from The Associated Press seeking comment.

This will be the first person to hear the news that the royal baby has arrived

Surprise, surprise…

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced the news that they were expecting their first baby together last year, with the future arrival’s due date said to be in April.

Now, just weeks away, speculation is rising around every aspect of the royal baby and its parents, from the baby’s gender and selected God parents to when the family will move to their new Frogmore Cottage home and the shade of vegan paint set to decorate the nursery.

This week however, everyone has been talking about the Queen’s role in the royal baby’s arrival, with the monarch said to be the first person to be informed once the baby has been born.

Yes, really. Queen Elizabeth will reportedly receive a call informing her that the baby has arrived and what its gender is, before anyone else is informed, even Meghan’s mum, Doria Ragland.

And the Queen’s power in terms of the royal baby won’t stop there, with it reported this week that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will actually have to change the royal baby name if HRH doesn’t approve.

‘The Queen has the power to say what their title is,’ Royal commentator Kate Williams explained in an interview with CNN. ‘But in the case of names, it is more of an informal conversation.’

She continued: ‘Of course they have such respect for the Queen that if she says “I really don’t like that name,” they’d definitely take that into account.

Judging by the bookies odds by William Hill however, there’s a pretty good bet that she’ll approve, with the most popular predictions honouring royal family members.

Victoria is in the top spot with odds of 8/1, followed by Diana at 10/1 and then Alice and Isabella. And in terms of boys names, top predictions include Arthur, Edward and James.

What will the couple name their newborn? There’s not long to wait and see, but we can all get in line behind the Queen to find out.

Creepy First Look at 'Annabelle Comes Home'; Here's Everything We Know

We were first introduced to a diabolical doll named Annabelle in The Conjuring. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga starred as experienced paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were called upon to help a Rhode Island family in 1971.

The horror thriller was a breakout success, leading to the spin-off feature Annabelle. That film was also quite popular, inspiring a prequel, Annabelle: Creation that explored the doll's origins, as well as Annabelle Comes Home, the newly-titled…

How to Save for Your First Apartment (and Escape Your Parents’ Basement)

Living on your own is blissful. Paying to live on your own? Not so much.

Renting your first place is a huge step on the path toward adulting, but if you don’t know how to save for an apartment, it can also drain your bank account and cause a bunch of headaches.

If you’re ready to make that leap to become a first-time renter, here are all the factors you need to consider so you’re financially prepared when you go apartment hunting.

What Can You Afford to Spend?

Your rent will very likely be your largest single expense each month. But you don’t want to spend more than your annual income can support.

A good rule of thumb is that your rent should be no more than a quarter to one-third of your take-home pay. For example, if you bring in $ 3,000 per month, you should be looking for apartments in the price range of $ 750 to $ 1,000.

If you find a great place for even less — awesome. But trying to get a place that exceeds that price threshold could put you in a financial crunch.

Potential landlords will want to verify you’re making enough money to afford rent, so you’ll typically be asked to provide pay stubs as proof of income. If you’re just starting a new job, you may be asked to provide the offer letter from your new employer that includes the salary you’ll be making.

Property managers may also look for renters who have good credit scores. A good credit score shows you have a history of paying bills on time and aren’t carrying a high debt load.

Defaulting on your student loans, letting your cell phone bill go into collections or maxing out all your credit cards are actions that could cause a landlord to deny your rental application. Your apartment manager wants to see you’d be able to handle the financial responsibilities of renting a place on your own.

If your income isn’t high enough or your credit is less than stellar, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to rent an apartment.

Some property managers will allow you to get someone to co-sign your lease. This would be someone, like a parent, who wouldn’t live in the unit but would be able to meet the income or credit requirements and would be on the hook for paying your rent if you aren’t able to.

Alternatively, the rental owner might ask you to provide a larger security deposit, pay an extra month’s rent upfront or pay higher rent than someone with better financial standing.

The Upfront Costs of Renting an Apartment

A tall apartment building with many balconies is bathed in pretty sunlight.

Finding an apartment you can afford is only one step toward getting a place of your own. You’ll also need to save a significant sum of money upfront.

Make sure to consider these costs when searching for your new home:

Application Fee

This is the cost property managers charge you to have your rental application processed. You can expect to pay between $ 25 and $ 50, but it could be more depending on where you live.

This fee is usually nonrefundable, meaning you won’t get it back if you choose not to live there or if your rental application is denied. Make sure you tour the unit — or a model unit — before submitting an application.

Security Deposit

This is the money the landlord keeps in reserve in case you don’t pay rent or leave your apartment in an unsatisfactory condition at the end of your lease.

Your security deposit could be as low as a couple hundred dollars, or it could be the equivalent of one month’s rent. Generally, if your apartment is in good condition at the end of your lease, this deposit will be refunded back to you.

If the landlord has to fix significant damage, you might get a partial refund or none at all.

First Month’s Rent (and Possibly Last Month’s Rent)

You’ll need to have your first month’s rent upfront when you move in. Some rental property owners will also ask you to provide money to cover your last month’s rent.

If your move-in date isn’t at the beginning of the month, it’s possible your rent will be prorated for that first month, meaning you’ll only be responsible for paying a portion of that month’s rent.

Pet Fee/Deposit

If your furry friend will be living with you in your new place, you could be asked to pay an additional couple hundred dollars upfront. Some landlords will charge a flat fee, while others will have you pay a refundable deposit that you will get back at the end of your lease, provided your pet has caused no damage.

How to Calculate the Cost to Move

Moving can be an absolute pain — and we’re not just talking about the logistics of packing up your belongings or the physical labor of moving heavy boxes and furniture.

Moving comes with its own set of expenses that need to be factored into the cost of renting a new apartment.

Moving costs will vary widely depending on your situation. For instance, you may want to hire professional movers if your new apartment is a third-floor walk-up.

When asking yourself if you can afford to move, consider the following expenses:

  • Boxes and moving supplies: If you don’t have any boxes of your own or can’t borrow any, you could purchase them from businesses like U-Haul or Home Depot for $ 1 or $ 2 per box. They also sell extras like packing tape and cushioning material.
  • Moving truck: A local move with a small truck might cost you $ 20 to $ 40 plus mileage and fees. Or you could end up paying several hundred dollars for a one-way drop-off if you relocate across state lines.
  • Professional movers: You could pay as little as $ 25 per hour per mover for help with a local move. Or you could pay a company a couple thousand dollars to ship your belongings cross-country.

Making Your Place Feel Like Home on the Cheap

A woman pauses to look out the window while doing repairs in an empty apartment.

If you’re moving into your first place, you probably don’t have a bunch of furniture. That’ll save you on moving costs (win!), but it also means you’ll face the expense of decking out your new home.

If you’re itching to fill up your apartment like a perfectly staged HGTV home, take a deep breath and practice some restraint. You’ll be dealing with enough costs as it is.

First, focus on move-in expenses like toilet paper, cleaning supplies and a shower curtain — plus pizza and beer. Then turn your attention to the basic necessities like a bed, pots, pans and maybe a table and chairs to have meals. Get the rest of what you need over time as your budget allows.

You may be able to score free (or super cheap) furniture from friends, family or sites like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

Check garage sales, thrift stores, Goodwill or pawn shops for low-priced items for your new home. Retailers like Walmart, IKEA, HomeGoods and Big Lots are known for low prices, as well as online sites like Wayfair and Overstock.

Budgeting for Living Expenses

Your rent won’t be the only monthly expense you’ll face after moving into your new apartment. If you weren’t previously responsible for paying household bills, you’ll have a great deal of recurring costs to get used to.

Here are some common monthly expenses to expect:

  • Electricity
  • Gas
  • Water and sewer
  • Trash removal
  • Cable
  • Internet
  • Renter’s insurance
  • Parking

The cost of your monthly living expenses will vary, but you should plan to budget at least $ 200 to $ 300 for the above expenses. Ask your landlord if any of these costs are included as part of your rent. For example, some apartment complexes will fold water, sewer and trash services into the cost of rent.

When it comes to utilities like water and electricity, some providers may ask you to put down a deposit before services get turned on. Usually, that money is refundable.

You can also expect to pay an installation fee to set up services like cable or internet. That expense is generally nonrefundable.

If you opt for any extras — like outdoor storage or washer and dryer rental for your apartment — you’ll be paying more each month.

And in addition to that pet deposit we mentioned earlier, some landlords will charge renters as much as an extra $ 50 to $ 100 each month per pet.

When you create your budgeting worksheet, don’t forget to include a line item for an emergency fund. It’s good to set money aside each month, because the bills won’t stop if you lose your job or can’t work temporarily due to an illness or injury. Financial experts recommend having between three and six months’ living expenses in an emergency fund.

If you can’t find room in your budget for savings, you need to evaluate your income and expenses. You’ll either need to increase your income or reduce your expenses.

6 Tips for Saving Money on Renting an Apartment

A man looks out the window of an apartment he has just moved into.

All the costs involved with renting an apartment may have you wanting to renounce the entire idea of living on your own. But don’t be discouraged. The sweet freedom of having your own space can be so worth it.

As you financially prepare yourself for your next big step, here are some money-saving apartment tips to keep in mind.

  1. Look for rental specials. Some apartment managers run specials, such as free rent for your first month.
  2. Factor in all the amenities of the apartment complex and neighboring area when choosing a place to live. Let’s say one apartment option is $ 900 per month and includes access to an on-site gym and is in walking distance to work and a grocery store. Another apartment costs $ 800 but requires you to have a car and keep paying for your gym membership. You may find the more expensive apartment to be a better deal when you look at the entire picture.
  3. Talk to your potential landlord in advance if you think you have an issue, like a poor credit score, that would cause your rental application to be denied. The landlord may show leniency. And if not, you can get confirmation that your application will be denied before wasting money on an application fee.
  1. Rent the apartment with a roommate. You can save significantly by splitting costs with a roommate (or several). Just make sure you discuss in advance who is responsible for what and establish some ground rules to maintain the peace.
  2. Do a thorough walk-through before moving into your apartment unit. Bring any existing damages or other issues you notice to the property manager’s attention. Though it may not help you save on the apartment upfront, you’re more likely to get all of your security deposit back when you move out if it’s noted that those scratches on the hardwood floor existed before you moved in.
  1. Look into public assistance options if your income can’t cover the average cost of housing. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides resources for rental assistance programs — such as Section 8, public and privately owned subsidized housing — to make housing affordable to low-income people.
