Samsung reportedly has two more foldable phones coming after the Galaxy Fold

Samsung foldable phones

Say what you want about the novelty aspect of a foldable smartphone, but while this form factor is very much going to fall in the niche category for the time being, Samsung is nevertheless seriously committed to trying to spur excitement for this new style of handset. So much so that the smartphone maker apparently has two more foldable phones being prepped for after April’s release of the super-pricey Galaxy Fold.

That news comes via a Bloomberg report, which is in line with what we were already reporting back at the end of 2018. As we said in our post from November, for example, Samsung’s ambition is to apparently release at least 1 million foldable phone units a year, including new foldable phone versions each year similar to its Galaxy flagship device launches. In other words, Samsung never intended to put all its eggs in the Galaxy Fold basket.

Samsung’s foldable phone just got real: Meet the Galaxy Fold

Galaxy Fold Release Date

Samsung’s first foldable phone is no longer a secret. The company showed us a prototype back at its SDC18 developer conference in November, so it could announce the Infinity Flex screen and the One UI user interface that will work on all Samsung phones going forward, including foldable gadgets. But that wasn’t a real launch for the phone, as Samsung wasn’t ready to share its commercial name or tell the world how much it’ll cost. It didn’t even offer us a good look at the phone. The prototype was encased in a bulky protective case, and the imagery it used also camouflaged the phone’s design.

Fast-forward to February 20th, the Galaxy S10 launch day, and a massive leak showed us renders of the Galaxy Fold just one day after a leaker said that would be the phone’s name. Well, Samsung’s Unpacked event is finally here, and the Korean giant just confirmed the Galaxy Fold name and revealed other details about the handset.

LG says it’s ‘too early’ for foldable phones

TwitterFacebook

You may want to just slow your roll for minute with this whole foldable phone thing.

While electronics giants such as Samsung are reportedly charging ahead to release smartphones that bend as early as this year, at least one major player in the space is taking this opportunity to sit back and see how it all plays out. That would be LG, whose head of mobile Brian Kwon told reporters that the company has decided now is not the right time for LG to release a phone that bends.

“We have reviewed releasing the foldable smartphone when launching 5G smartphone but decided not to produce it,” Kwon is quoted by the Korean Times as saying on Feb. 15.  Read more…

Samsung’s foldable phone rumored to have killer specs and a massive battery

Galaxy F Specs

Samsung unveiled its first ever foldable smartphone last month, but it was hardly a proper announcement. Samsung showed off the phone’s Infinity Flex screen design, revealed the phone would have a large screen on the inside and a smaller one on the outside, and demoed bits and pieces of the new interface it developed with Google for the unnamed phone.

That’s about everything Samsung was willing to tell us about the phone, leaving plenty of things out of this first foldable phone presentation. However, a report that talks in great detail about the future of foldable devices also shares new information about Samsung’s new phone, including camera and battery specs.

LG, Huawei, and Samsung all think Flex is a great name for a foldable phone

LG foldable phone

Some of the big tech companies leading the way when it comes to foldable phones aren’t exactly flexing their creative muscles when it comes to choosing a name for their novel handsets.

Ok, granted, there are probably only so many naming conventions that accurately convey what you as a consumer are getting when you buy a phone with a bendable screen. Nevertheless, possible names for the first foldable handsets coming out of LG, Huawei, and Samsung have all started to leak out. None of those companies has made a firm decision yet, but it’s interesting that they’re all considering similar names for their devices. Like, really similar.
