One last Mother’s Day. Jodie Foster’s mother, Evelyn Foster, died on Monday, May 13, Us Weekly can confirm. She was 90 years old.

“Evelyn ‘Brandy’ Foster, mother of Jodie, Lucinda, Constance and Bud, passed away peacefully in her home on May 13th from complications related to dementia,” the obituary obtained by Us reads.

The family celebrated Evelyn’s accomplishments in the obituary, noting that she briefly worked as a Hollywood publicist for Arthur Jacobs, whose clients included Grace Kelly, Gregory Peck, James Stewart and Marilyn Monroe.

“She was raised in Rockford, Illinois but in the forties took her big band singing chops on the road to California. There she met Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Lucius Foster at a fencing match. … In her thirties, suddenly divorced and a single mother of four, Evelyn brought her entertainment savvy to managing the young acting career of her son Buddy best known as Ken Berry’s son in the series Mayberry RFD,” the family explained. “At three, her youngest daughter Jodie landed her first commercial, the famed 60’s Coppertone ad. Evelyn successfully managed and guided her daughter’s career until her second Best Actress Oscar win in 1991 for The Silence of The Lambs.”

Jodie, Lucinda, Constance and Buddy Foster added that their late mother was “a passionate world cinema lover and a liberal firebrand, always ahead of her time, with an opinion about virtually everything and a voice for social justice.”

“Evelyn was without a doubt the strongest person her family has ever met, a champion, a fighter, full of fire and love. No one could beat her style, all five feet tall with naturally ‘cork screw’ hair,” the obituary read. “Her family will remember those dimple smiles and big hugs and well placed four letter words. No one messed with Nana, an original like no other. May she live in all of us forever.”

The family concluded: “Her family will mourn her passing privately. In lieu of flowers, they suggest you look up at the sky, open your arms and say her name. She would get a kick of that.”

Former Banker Finds Success in Synthetic Hair Extensions Business

Tiffini Gatlin—a former corporate bank executive—turned her 20-year side hustle of braiding and protective styling hair into a beauty brand by creating the first pre-curled and looped synthetic crochet hair. With a successful sale of her first synthetic hair brand, Curlkalon Hair Collection, Gatlin expanded her vision for creating safe and affordable synthetic hair extensions with the launch of her second brand, Latched and Hooked Beauty.

Her products are a staple in the synthetic hair industry, catching the attention of celebrities such as Gabrielle Union and mainstream media outlets including Allure, which named her brand one of the best for women of color.

In this interview, Gatlin expands on her career pivot and future plans.

Black Enterprise: Tell us about how you got started in the industry and what was your inspiration?

Gatlin: I actually started in the beauty industry when I was 16-years-old. Ms. Gloria, a popular braider in my neighborhood, asked me if I was interested in learning how to braid and told me how much money I could make, so I decided to give it a try. For a few months on the weekends, I’d walk almost a mile to her home, and she’d teach me different techniques and even allowed me to practice on her clients. Several months later, I started building my own clientele. I used my friend Naima and other popular girls in my high school as models to display my work and attract clients strictly by word of mouth.

I didn’t pick braiding back up as a side hustle until I became an entrepreneur in 2010. I used the money earned from braiding hair to fund my entrepreneurial goals. In 2014, I took notice of girls on Instagram using a century-old method called crochet braiding to create voluminous curls, and I thought the style was amazing and the perfect style hack for girls who were transitioning, unable to grasp the “perfect rod set” or just wanted to switch up her look for a few weeks. I started trying the style on my clients and although I loved the results I hated the process which consisted of using boiling water to form the synthetic hair into a curl. Because synthetic hair is nothing more than a polymer (plastic), the use of hot water makes the style “set” and voila, you have perfect curls for weeks without any additional maintenance.

You created and manufactured a new product overseas. Can you share what that process was like?

As a natural creative, I became interested in how to make the process safer so that women would not be subjected to hot water burns and professional hairstylist would not have to bear the thought of liabilities due to the method. Not to mention, the time commitment was gruesome and unappealing to a stylist who worked to get more bodies in their chair. After searching in beauty supply stores, I realized there were no unwefted, pre-curled, and looped options. From that moment I became inspired to embark on a journey to design and manufacture the first pre-curled and looped crochet hair that matched the texture of black women’s unprocessed hair. In 2015, I launched my first beauty company, Curlkalon Hair Collection, which was acquired in 2018. Since then, I have expanded my vision of offering quality beauty convenience with the launch of Latched and Hooked Beauty.

Creating a product overseas actually wasn’t overly complicated. We found a few candidates, and I interviewed four prospects via Skype and eventually hired a woman based on her experience with locating factories that specialized in OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) development. After signing an NDA with her, we developed a short term contract that outlined her engagement with our business, which included being a liaison and helping us negotiate pricing and finding a factory that could design the prototype and help us break through the language barrier. Once we began production with the factory we chose, we worked directly with the factory, and the liaison relationship ended. I’d say the most challenging part was trusting that what we agreed to would actually show up and not being there in person to observe the process from beginning to end made me feel uneasy.

If someone was interested in inventing a new product, what three things are a must to ensure success and why?

If you are interested in inventing a new product I would recommend these three steps:

  • Research your target market – How do you know your target market needs this product? Have you done a focus group? Have you identified a problem? Just because everyone else is doing it and you may have seen someone else become successful doesn’t make it a good idea.
  • Create a prototype – Creating a prototype can help you determine how to approach the build-out of your product, you can quickly rule out the approaches that don’t work to focus on the ones that do work.
  • Evaluate the manufacturing process for your invention – Can you manufacture in the U.S. or do you need to locate a manufacturer overseas? Knowing your options will help you put costs associated with MOQ’s (minimum order quantity) into perspective as well as give you an idea of how long the process will take to deliver the final goods to your consumer.

Verizon Looking to Sell Tumblr After Destroying It By Removing Adult Content, PornHub Interested in Buying and ‘Restoring It to Its Former Glory’

Late last year, Tumblr announced that it would start banning all adult content.

Late last year was also the last time most people logged into Tumblr.

According to The Wall Street Journal, that Verizon has approached other companies in recent weeks that may be interested in buying Tumblr.

via The Verge:

On Thursday evening, Pornhub VP Corey Price claimed in a statement to BuzzFeed News that his company is “extremely interested” in buying Tumblr and “very much looking forward to one day restoring it to its former glory with NSFW content.” The company did not say whether it has actually made any legitimate offer to Verizon, however.

Price is referring to a major change implemented late last year, when Tumblr took the controversial step of banning porn on its platform. The company has been using AI to detect and automatically block images and videos that contain certain adult content. Existing posts containing porn were made private and are no longer publicly accessible. The move resulted in harsh criticism toward the company and a steep decline in web traffic, but Tumblr has given no indication that it plans to reverse its decision. Pornhub quickly sought to attract those users that Tumblr drove away.Tumblr itself was acquired by Yahoo for $ 1.1 billion in 2013 during the Marissa Mayer era as an attempt to revitalize and steer new, younger users to the sinking internet staple. But Yahoo never really knew what to do with Tumblr, and the micro-blogging site — with its millions of personal blogs and some of the weirdest, best things on the internet — did nothing to reverse Yahoo’s business fortunes.

Verizon finalized its $ 4.5 billion acquisition of Yahoo in 2017, which led to it taking ownership of Tumblr. Tumblr is currently part of Verizon Media Group (formerly Oath), the umbrella brand for digital properties that Verizon ultimately controlled after its two buyouts of AOL and Yahoo. The Journal notes that Verizon’s attempt to offload Tumblr comes as it tries to make the best of its collective media business after a $ 4.6 billion write-down last year, which was essentially an acknowledgement that both deals had been a mistake. Verizon sold one of its Yahoo assets, Flickr, to SmugMug about a year ago. Guru Gowrappan, the executive put in charge of Verizon Media Group last year, later criticized that sell-off as too time-consuming without enough reward.

But publicly, Verizon executives remain committed to the properties despite layoffs that have affected some of the sites and entertainment divisions. “I hope there is no doubt about our commitment to Verizon Media Group and how it fits into our whole strategy,” CEO Hans Vestberg said earlier this week, according to the Journal. Tumblr, it seems, is not necessarily part of that strategy. But now the question becomes whether there’s even a viable buyer for the platform in 2019 that won’t let it slowly wither away.

Listen, we’re all adults here — PornHub stepping in wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Court Reinstates Murder Conviction For Former NFL Star Aaron Hernandez

(BOSTON) — Massachusetts’ highest court on Wednesday reinstated the late Aaron Hernandez’s murder conviction, which was erased after the former NFL star killed himself in prison.

The Supreme Judicial Court also scrapped the legal principle that wiped out Hernandez’s conviction for future cases, calling it “outdated and no longer consonant with the circumstances of contemporary life.”

Hernandez was convicted in 2015 of killing semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd. Two years later, the 27-year-old killed himself in his prison cell days after being acquitted of most charges in a separate double-murder case.

A judge threw out Hernandez’s conviction that year, citing the legal principle that holds that a defendant convicted at trial who dies before an appeal is heard should no longer be considered guilty in the eyes of the law, thereby returning the case to its pretrial status.

Under the doctrine, rooted in centuries of English law, a conviction should not be considered final until an appeal can determine whether mistakes were made that deprived the defendant of a fair trial, legal experts say.

Prosecutors have said the legal doctrine is outdated and unfair to victims. Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn II argued the defendant’s estate should be allowed to appeal the case, if they wish. Otherwise, the conviction should stand, he said.

“He goes through a full trial, a jury who speaks for the public convicts him and because he dies, in this case commits suicide, the whole thing is wiped out like it never happened? It’s not fair or just and should be changed,” Quinn told reporters after the November hearing.

Under the new rule laid out by the court, the conviction will stand but the court record will note the conviction was neither affirmed nor reversed because the defendant died while the appeal was pending.

Other high-profile Massachusetts criminals whose convictions have been erased after their deaths include John Salvi, who was convicted of killing two abortion clinic workers and wounding five other people during a shooting rampage in Brookline in 1994.

Roman Catholic priest John Geoghan, a key figure in the clergy sex abuse scandal that rocked the Boston archdiocese and spread across the globe, also had his child molestation conviction vacated after he was beaten to death in 2003 in his cell at the same Massachusetts maximum-security prison where Hernandez died.

Hernandez’s attorney had previously argued the legal doctrine should remain intact, saying juries make mistakes.

How other states handle cases such as Hernandez’s varies widely. Some states, like Massachusetts, toss the convictions, while others dismiss the defendant’s appeal and the conviction stands. Other states allow appellate courts to consider a dead defendant’s case, prosecutors say.

2 Former Police Officers Arrested In The Killing Of Brazilian Activist & Politician, Marielle Franco

Tribute To Marielle Franco

Source: NurPhoto / Getty

Almost one year after the violent assassination of Rio de Janeiro councilwoman and activist Marielle Franco, Brazilian authorities have arrested two ex-military officers in connection with Franco’s murder, according to The New York Times. Franco’s death reverberated throughout Brazil, a passionate advocate for the underserved in her community.

Franco and her driver, Anderson Gomes, were murdered on March 14, 2018 after a gunman opened fire, showering their vehicle with 14 shots.

Early Tuesday morning around 4 a.m. Brazilian police arrested Ronnie Lessa and Elcio Vieira de Queiroz. Police believe Lessa fired the shots while Queiroz drove the getaway vehicle.

The arrests stoke the fires of numerous speculations that Franco was the target of an attack coordinated by the political powers that be. As of now, police have no motive and have yet to release information regarding who ordered the attack.

“It is undeniable that Marielle Francisco da Silva was summarily executed for her political activities and the causes she defended,” prosecutors wrote in a court document, according to the O Globo newspaper. “The barbarity committed the night of March 14, 2018, was an affront to a democratic state guided by the rule of law.”

Senior investigator Giniton Lages told the Times that 34 additional warrants would be served in order to find out who orchestrated the assassination.

“I don’t want there to be another case like Marielle and Anderson,” he said during a news conference. “It would be very dangerous to leave this matter unsolved.”

Franco was referred as a political force to reckon with, serving as the lone Black woman on the city council. She frequently spoke against the increasing state-sanctioned violence in Rio and also openly advocated for the rights of Black women and members of the LGBTQ community, two communities that she fiercely identified with.

Thousands of people in Brazil and across the world took to the streets to protest her death in the days following.

Duke University Investigating Assault Claim Against Former Basketball Player Made by Fairfax Accuser

Duke University is investigating a sexual assault allegation made Friday against a former men’s basketball player.

The claims were made in a statement by the attorneys of Meredith Watson, who has also said Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax sexually assaulted her on the university’s Durham, North Carolina, campus when they were both students there in 2000. Fairfax has refused to resign as he faces two allegations of assault.

“Ms. Watson was raped by a basketball player during her sophomore year at Duke,” the statement said. “She went to the Dean, who provided no help and discouraged her from pursuing the claim further. Ms. Watson also told friends, including Justin Fairfax.”

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told ESPN both he and the university understand the severity of the matter.

“I think there was an allegation made, right?” the coach told the network after Saturday night’s game against Virginia. “I’m not sure that’s true or not, but there’s an allegation. I didn’t find out about it until late last night, and I have no knowledge about it.”

The school released a statement on Saturday night.

“Duke first learned of the allegations involving a student-athlete last night when they were reported by the media,” the statement said. “Coach Krzyzewski confirms that he had no knowledge of the alleged conduct from 1999. The university is looking into the matter and will have no further comment at this time.”

The player’s identity hasn’t been released.

Personal Money Snapshot: An Administrator in Public Higher Education and Former Lawyer Shares Her Money Snapshot!

Eeek – we are thrilled to present our very first personal money snapshot! By way of background: we got a few requests from readers to launch our own “money diary” series, so we asked willing readers to fill out a form with lots of details about debt, spending, saving and more!  If you’d like to fill out the form and be considered for a future personal money snapshot, please click here if you’d like to see the form and/or submit responses! You can also see a PDF of the questions if you want to review them ahead of time.

Today’s snapshot features reader P, who notes: “I have worked almost exclusively in public administration or higher education, so not a high roller here! Husband had a job loss early in career (about five years ago) that screwed us up.”

Please remember that this is is a real person who has feelings and isn’t gaining anything from this, unlike your usual friendly (soul-deadened, thick-skinned, cold-hearted, money-grubbing) blogger — so please be kind with any comments. Thank you! — Kat

Name: P
Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Age: 32
Occupation: lawyer –> public higher ed administrator
Income: $ 83,000
Household income: $ 165,000
Partner’s age: 34 (husband)
Household net worth:
 About $ 100,000
Net worth when started working: $ 26,000 (age 24)
Current debt: $ 15,000 credit card debt, $ 2,000 student loans
Living situation: Currently renting; rent is $ 1,400/month. (I do not contribute to rent.)

Debt

What does your debt picture look like?
Aggressively paying down $ 15,000 in consumer debt (credit card) accrued due to a job loss, a period of underemployment after a relocation to a much lower cost of living area (from D.C. to Chapel Hill), and shopping like an idiot. I have about $ 2,000 left on my student loans, which was only $ 10,000 to start.

How much money are you spending each month to pay down debt?
$ 2,000

How did you pay for school?
I made educational choices that left me with as little debt as possible (full scholarships to both undergrad and law school, albeit to lower ranked, less challenging institutions than I could have succeeded in). I always had two jobs during school (except for during 1L). Parents generously paid my rent and let me drive a family car.

What is your living situation?
We rent because we moved here with very little in savings and have lower-paying jobs. We sold our home to move to D.C., which subsequently ate our money ($ 2,500/month in rent for a 1-bedroom in Maryland), and now we rent for both money reasons and for flexibility reasons. We are planning to purchase again in 2019, thankfully, as we build savings and have a better grasp on what we want from our home.

Have you ever done anything noteworthy to avoid or lessen debt?
We had to cash out a small retirement account when my husband lost his job in 2013. We used it as a stopgap for some major things, but ultimately he re-invested about $ 4,000 of that.

Savings, Investments & Retirement

How much do you save for retirement?
I invest about 15–20% of my gross pay each month (target date retirement funds), with some of that as an employer match. Higher ed has its minimal benefits for things like matching!

How much do you have in retirement savings?
$ 70,000 (just mine)

How much do you save outside of retirement accounts?
We fund an emergency account for about $ 400/month, a down payment account at about $ 1000–$ 1500/month, and a vacation fund at $ 100/month. Buying a house is first priority, and a not-sucky retirement is the other. We are childfree and find that impacts some of our decisions with relationship to both the house and retirement.

What’s the #1 thing you’re doing to save money, limit spending, or live frugally?
We just don’t buy a lot of stuff, clothes, disposable things. We’re relatively minimal with our “stuff” consumption. And we bring lunches!

How much do you have in cash that’s available today?
Twenty bucks? Idk, I’m a millennial.

How much do you have in cash that’s available in a week, such as with an online savings account?
$ 20,000, all of my banking is online, no brick and mortar (includes $ 7,000 emergency fund).

Spending

How much do you spend on the following categories on a monthly basis?

Groceries: $ 600
Restaurants, bars, takeout, and delivery:
$ 400
Clothing and accessories: Less than $ 100
Transportation: Household spends about $ 330 (gas plus car payments, two cars)
Rent/living expenses: $ 1,400
Entertainment: $ 25, Hulu and Netflix only
Health care: $ 50/month each for two individual plans; no kids

What’s your spending range for these things? What’s your average?

Vacations – Range: $ 50–$ 7,000
Vacation – Average: $ 2,500

Individual items of clothing – Range: $ 10–70
Individual items of clothing – Average: $ 40

Apartment or house – Range: $ 1,000–$ 2,600
Apartment or house – Current main residence: $ 1,400 (rent)

Car or other vehicle – Range: $ 8,000–$ 10,000, always buy used, hate cars
Car or other vehicle – Last purchase / current main vehicle: $ 10,000, used vehicle

When was your wedding and how much did it cost?
2010, $ 30,000 total (parents paid), $ 250 for my wedding ring, about $ 300 for bridesmaids’ gifts, $ 250 for husband’s gift. Was married at 24 to my high school sweetheart (still am!). Tradition in my family is parents pay; it is “their party in our honor,” and the guest list was big (175+) due to very large families. Did not get married in a church. Married by judge I interned for, on lawn of beach club in New England. No honeymoon, as we had just started jobs.

Are there any other large expenses in your life, now or previously?
Husband doesn’t do the taxes anymore… didn’t know how to calculate “income” for IRS purposes so we had a $ 6,000 tax bill one year. Ugh.

Money Strategy

Do you have a general money strategy?
Make as much as you can while still having a life and being happy; spend it on the experiences and food you really want.

Get Paid to Play With Legos? This Former College Student Found a Way

When Maxx Davidson was 4 years old, he wanted to grow up to build things. He ultimately achieved that goal, although the path that took him there was something even he couldn’t dream up.

Now 23, Davidson is the latest to earn the title of Lego Master Model Builder — and he’s one of only 22 people in the world who have the right to put that on their resume.

So, how does someone not only land a literal dream job but one as prestigious as Master Model Builder? With a few months of experience in his new gig under his belt, Davidson filled us in.

The Student Becomes the Master (Model Builder)

In spring 2018, while Davidson was pursuing a life-sciences education degree at the University of Akron in Ohio, he stumbled on a shared Facebook article that would change his career path.

A new Legoland Discovery Center was preparing to open in Columbus, Ohio, and they were on the hunt for the park’s official Master Model Builder.

Although Davidson had already left his 4-year-old self’s dream job behind to pursue “something more reasonable,” his curiosity was piqued. Here was a real-life opportunity, something he didn’t realize existed. Naturally, he applied along with thousands of others.

Davidson and over 70 other contestants from across the country were invited to Brick Factor, a two-day, multiround competition where he worked to outbuild the best of the best to earn the job.

A man builds a LEGO model during a contest.

“I know Brick Factor used a lot of the more basic bricks. They didn’t have any specialty stuff,” he says. “I got out a lot of my old Lego bricks and practiced putting those together in different geometric shapes to see if I could get something fluid from those blocky structures.”

Not only did he go back to his Lego roots to practice for the competition, contestants were told about the first round animal theme beforehand. So, he went into the contest with a bees-in-a-honeycomb model idea… which he abandoned at the last minute for a saltwater environment instead.

Despite his eleventh hour changeup, Davidson beat the country’s top builders and became the next Master Model Builder.

From the time he landed the job in May to the opening of Legoland Discovery Center Columbus in late September, he has been training with fellow Master Model Builders and creating models for the grand opening.

“It was completely surreal,” he says. “When it finally kind of clicked for me that this was actually a job that I had, it just felt so good coming into work every day.”

While the official salary wasn’t disclosed, a Glassdoor listing from 2011 reports the base pay as $ 15 to $ 16 per hour. And what exactly does the day-to-day work of a Master Model Builder entail? A whole lot more than building awe-inspiring Lego creations.

“I run the creative workshop… We have a different monthly model building every month, and I get to take the kids step by step through how to do that,” says Davidson.

The Discovery Center also offers Lego Education — weekly programs that support the schools’ core curriculum. Davidson spends that time teaching children about science, technology, engineering and math concepts that match up with what they’re currently learning in school.

“So, part of the job is definitely the building, but another part is being able to interact with the guests and make sure everyone has a great experience,” he says. “There’s a lot of different facets, and they balance each other really nicely week to week.”

What It Takes to Land a Dream Job

Snagging this opportunity of a lifetime meant Davidson had to completely pivot from his previous plan, which included leaving the University of Akron behind and moving to Columbus full time.

A dramatic career change can seem like a disorienting move for some, but Davidson says the work he was doing as a student applies to his current gig. Plus, he stresses that just because you leave formal education for a job, it doesn’t mean you stop learning. You continue your education — just in a different format.

He also thinks his previous experiences, especially his interest in education, gave him an edge in the competition. Aside from stellar Lego brick-building skills, the judges were looking for someone who was comfortable interacting with a crowd, children in particular.

For the final round of Brick Factor, instead of just constructing a model on his own, he brought kids from the audience on stage with him to build small pieces of the final product — a record player with a moving needle.

Going that extra mile elevated him above the other applicants. And while this example may seem specific to this particular gig, the overarching concept should be used by applicants pursuing a job in any field: Know your strengths, and don’t be scared to try something outside the norm to showcase how well you fit a position.

Davidson also has a bit of personal advice when it comes to landing a dream job:

“The idea of a dream job is something that doesn’t come around very often, but what you can do is pursue a passion,” he says. “Then in the off chance that you do get an opportunity, you’re prepared.”

He believes that if you have a passion — any passion — and work toward it, you’ll acquire universal skills that will push you forward into a dream position. It’s a sort of “If you build it, it will come” mentality. (Pun 100% intended.)

And if your passion happens to be Lego model building, you may be in luck. A new Legoland Discovery Center is scheduled to open in 2019 in San Antonio, which means Lego is on the hunt for Master Model Builder No. 23. Time to start strategizing your models and brushing up on your public speaking skills.

Davidson is living proof that our dream jobs, even the ones from childhood, aren’t out of reach. Just play to your strengths and always pursue new learning experiences — and keep an eye out for life-changing Facebook articles.

Former Black Employee Files Suit Against Moschino for Racially Profiling Black Shoppers

Shamael Lataillade, a former employee at a Moschino boutique in West Hollywood, California, filed a lawsuit against the Italian luxury clothing company for racial discrimination against her and shoppers of color. In the suit, Lataillade claims that employees at the store were instructed to racially profile black patrons who didn’t appear to be wealthy and classify them using a racist codename.

Lataillade says a store supervisor would call black clientele “Serena” and ordered employees to follow and watch them closely if they weren’t wearing diamonds or name brand clothing, according to documents obtained by TMZ. Associates were also told to tell so-called “Serenas” that certain items were out of stock. The female supervisor even went as far as sometimes recording the license plate numbers of black clients. In one instance, she purportedly called the police to report a “suspicious” customer who Lataillade says turned out to be a high-profile rapper.

In addition, Lataillade, who is a Haitian-American woman, claims that the supervisor stereotyped her as someone who practices voodoo. Lataillade argues that she was then fired for speaking out about the “Serena” code word and other forms of racism she faced.

Ironically, the code word “Serena” seems to be a reference to iconic tennis star Serena Williams, who boasts a net worth around $ 180 million.

In response to the suit, which seeks unspecified damages, Moschino denied Lataillade’s charges and told TMZ the company “complies with applicable equal employment laws and values and respects all customers and clients regardless of their race or background.”

Nevertheless, this lawsuit points to the notorious phenomenon of “shopping while black,” an epidemic that dates back to the 20th century, when department stores prohibited black shoppers from using their main entrance and trying on clothes in fear their skin would tarnished items. Oprah Winfrey even fell victim to the “shopping while black” stigma back in 2013, when a Zurich store clerk snubbed the billionaire and suggested that she could not afford a $ 38,000 purse.

Former Michigan State President Charged With Lying to Police About Nassar’s Sexual Abuse

(LANSING, Mich.) —Ex-Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon was charged Tuesday with lying to police during an investigation of the handling of serial sexual abuser Larry Nassar — the third current or former campus official other than Nassar to face criminal charges in the scandal.

Simon, who stepped down under pressure in January, spoke with state police investigators on May 1. She is accused of making two false and misleading statements — that she was unaware of the nature of a sexual misconduct complaint that sparked the school’s 2014 Title IX probe of Nassar, and that she only knew a sports medicine doctor, not Nassar himself, was under investigation at that time.

If convicted of two felony and two misdemeanor counts of lying to a peace officer, the 71-year-old Simon faces up to four years in prison. The Mason resident is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Eaton County near Lansing.

The Associated Press left a message seeking comment from Simon’s attorney, Lee Silver. University spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said Simon — who remains on faculty despite resigning as president — is taking an immediate leave of absence, without pay “to focus on her legal situation.”

Simon is the fifth person to be criminally charged in the wake of Nassar’s convictions for molesting young female athletes under the guise of treatment. Numerous other people have lost their jobs or have been sued.

In August, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette charged former MSU gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages with lying to an investigator when she denied that witnesses told her years ago about being sexually assaulted by Nassar. In March, the ex-dean of the osteopathic medicine school, William Strampel , was charged with neglecting his duty to enforce examining-room restrictions imposed on Nassar after the 2014 Title IX investigation.

That probe, initiated by a patient, resulted in the school clearing Nassar.

In Texas, former USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny was charged last month with tampering with evidence while a former sports medicine trainer, Debra Van Horn , was charged in June with “acting as a party” with Nassar in the sexual assault of a child.

Hundreds of girls and women have said Nassar molested them when he was a physician, including while he worked at Michigan State and Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics, which trains U.S. Olympians. Nassar, 55, last year pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting nine victims and possessing child pornography, and his sentences equate to life in prison.

How Did We Get Here? Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Was Reportedly in Talks to Coach the Cleveland Browns, Says She’s Not Ready

The Cleveland Browns were reportedly mulling over interviewing George W. Bush’s former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, for a head coaching job — but it’s not happening.

via TMZ:

ESPN reported Sunday that the Browns’ front office was interested in possibly bringing Condi for an interview to replace recently-fired head coach Hue Jackson. She’s a huge Browns fan, and met with some of the owners during a game earlier this year.

Aside from that though … it’s unclear what, if any, professional experience she’d bring to the table … when it comes to football, that is. She’s got a pretty decent resume, otherwise.

The Browns’ general manager, John Dorsey, issued a statement shortly after the news spread like wildfire, saying in part … “Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is a great leader, possesses the highest possible character and also happens to be a Browns fan.”

He fully shot down the speculation, though, by adding … “Our coaching search will be thorough and deliberate, but we are still in the process of composing the list of candidates and Secretary Rice has not been discussed.”

As for Ms. Rice … she offered her own statement on the rumor, saying “I love my Browns — and I know they will hire an experienced coach to take us to the next level.”

After going on to advocate for the hiring of more women in coaching positions, she seemed to shut down the notion of a head coaching gig by saying … “BTW — I’m not ready to coach but I would like to call a play or two next season if the Browns need ideas! And at no time will I call for a “prevent defense.”

Condoleezza coaching in the NFL? Just put the whole 2018 in rice.

Tekashi 69’s Former Agency Accuses Him Of Lying About Being Robbed

Yesterday, Tekashi 69 stopped by The Breakfast Club and he claimed that the reason for which he fired his team was that they were robbing him. It was recently reported that Tekashi fired everyone and canceled his shows.

In a video in which he appears to be extremely stressed out, Tekashi speaks in front of the camera and revealed that his American tour had been canceled.

Tekashi was supposed to perform in Austin, Texas yesterday but he noted that he would not be present at the show.

At The Breakfast Club, he claimed that he only received about $ 300,000 of an alleged $ 3.5 million deal and everyone who watched the interview was definitely shocked to hear such a thing.

He also said that members of his booking company who were handling the deal, MTA, also reached the point in which they threatened the life of his mom.

According to TMZ, MTA is denying Tekashi’s claims.

An MTA rep said that there wasn’t such a deal in the first place and they also reported that MTA along with Tr3way Entertainment was handling his travel, security, and transport.

Hot New Hip Hop reported that MTA told TMZ that they booked nine upcoming shows in the US and two more in Mexico for him. They said that Tekashi received $ 700,000 for the shows.

There were also five more shows in Germany for which the rapper received $ 160,000. It seems that MTA is reportedly considering taking legal action against Tekashi for what he accused them of.

Former American Apparel Boss Named True Religion Interim CEO

C-SUITE SHUFFLE: True Religion said chief executive officer John Ermatinger is to retire and has installed former American Apparel ceo Chelsea Grayson as interim ceo as the board looks for a permanent successor.
Ermatinger was named to the top spot in 2015, bringing to the position experience after having been ceo of Tommy Hilfiger’s Asia-Pacific region, president of Gap Inc.’s Asia-Pacific division and Levi Strauss & Co. Americas president.
Grayson has been on the True Religion board of directors since last year and was chair of the audit committee.
Her time at American Apparel capped a rough stretch in the company’s history with the departure of its founder, layoffs and two bankruptcies. She had previously served as American Apparel’s general counsel and chief administrative officer before she was appointed to the ceo position in September 2016, succeeding Paula Schneider. Grayson would later find herself shuttling the company through its second bankruptcy filing less than two months after her appointment. Part of the business was ultimately sold to Gildan Activewear Inc.
Grayson, in a statement, said her focus would be to continue the momentum set off by collaborations with Bella Hadid and Manchester United.
TowerBrook Capital Partners paid $ 835 million for True Religion in May 2013.

Former NFL Player Rae Carruth Released From Prison 18-Years After Having His Pregnant Girlfriend Killed [Video]

Former NFL player Rae Carruth has been released from prison after serving 18 years for the slaying of his pregnant girlfriend.

via NYDN:

The former first-round draft pick was released from Sampson Correctional Institution in North Carolina early Monday.

“I’m excited about just being out of here,” he told WSOC by phone a few days before his release. “I’m nervous just about how I’ll be received by the public. I still have to work. I still have to live. I have to exist out there and it just seems like there is so much hate and negativity toward me.”

Carruth had completed his sentence of 18 to 24 years. He did not speak to reporters as he left the prison on a chilly morning.

Now 44, Carruth was found guilty of orchestrating a plot to kill Cherica Adams to avoid paying child support. Adams was shot four times on Nov. 16, 1999 while driving her car in Charlotte, but managed to make a 911 call that pointed the finger at the NFL player.

Adams, eight months pregnant, died less than a month after the shooting. The child she was carrying was delivered, but suffers from permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy.

Carruth has said he wants to have a relationship with son Chancellor, who remains in the custody of his grandmother. Saundra Adams had said she would be there when Carruth got out of prison, but she was not present on Monday.

The former wide receiver was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 1997. Panthers center Frank Garcia said players were stunned when they heard the news of about his possible involvement in the murder.

“It would be like finding out the guy sitting in the cubicle next to you at work was arrested for murder,” Garcia said. “You just don’t always know people as well as you think you do.”

Some players testified at the trial, and others would spend time in the players’ lounge watching it on Court TV.

“That is one time where you were actually hiding from the cameras,” Garcia said. “You just wanted to stay low and not be involved. All along you’re asking yourself, ‘Did I miss any signs? How is somebody capable of this?’”

Carruth worked as a barber while behind bars, making about $ 1 per hour, according to North Carolina Department of Public Safety spokesman Jerry Higgins. He had signed a $ 3.7 million contract with the Panthers after being drafted.

Tamar Braxton Tells Her Former ‘The Real’ Co-Hosts Exactly How She Feels About Returning To The Show In Surprising Video

Oh, Boy! Tamar Braxton had an epic clap-back for the ladies of The Real who had a lot to say about her firing.

It is a known fact that Tamar is not one to hold her tongue and while appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen After Show, she threw her former co-hosts under the bus.

A caller asked her when was the last time she spoke with her ex-friends — Loni Love, Jeannie Mai, Adrienne Houghton, and Tamera Mowry-Housley.

The fan also wondered if she would ever return to the show. Tamar said: “The last time I spoke to them was at the Emmys. Would I return to do what?”

Andy Cohen added: “To be on the show, sweetie.” Tamar replied, “I don’t know.” Andy sensed where Vincent Herbert’s estranged wife was leaning and added, “you’re the best! I have a feeling the answer is no!”

You can watch the clip below.

Tamar’s ex-coworker, Loni, recently did an interview on the Breakfast Club, where she was asked why was Tamar fired from The Real, and she brought up Towanda’s name by saying: “I get on a plane to go to Atlanta [and] guess who’s in front of me, in first-class: Towanda. She told me they did an emergency episode of Braxton Family Values, and, ‘You need to see the episode.’”

She continued, “I had a person that worked at WEtv. The person that worked at WEtv contacted me [and said], ‘You are being named, the girls are being named,’ and I called my attorney, and I said, ‘You gotta call WEtv and let them know if they’re naming us, we’re gonna have to have legal action. That’s defamation of character.”

Towanda was not having it, and she hit back by writing: “What I’m not willing to do is allow ANYONE to create dissension. I absolutely was on that flight with @comiclonilove And how many years ago was this conversation? I’m amused at how the statements were paraphrased. It was NEVER a heads up…. AND as soon as I saw Loni on the flight, I IMMEDIATELY contacted Tamar to let her know. The interview circulating that I’m included in is bullsh*t.”

One fan said: “You better come through with this fabulous read!!!! Tamar has moved on to bigger and better things! It’s so pathetic that they still have to bring up old news!!! I haven’t watched it since she left!!!’

Tamar masters the art of the diss and she has no competition in this department.

Jim Taylor, Hall of Fame Former Fullback for the Green Bay Packers, Dies at 83

(GREEN BAY, Wis.) — Hall of Fame fullback Jim Taylor of the Green Bay Packers has died at 83.

The team says a family friend told the Packers he died early Saturday.

Taylor played on the great Packer teams and was the league’s MVP in 1962. He won four NFL titles and scored the first rushing touchdown in Super Bowl history.

Taylor spent 10 seasons in the NFL after being drafted in the second round by Green Bay in 1958 out of LSU. He joined a backfield that featured Paul Hornung and began to thrive when Packers coach Vince Lombardi took over in 1959.

Lombardi came up with the concept of the Packers Sweep, which featured pulling guards and Taylor or Hornung running around the end. But it was 6-foot, 216-pound Taylor who showed the play’s punishing promise.
