Get Paid to Play With Legos? This Former College Student Found a Way

When Maxx Davidson was 4 years old, he wanted to grow up to build things. He ultimately achieved that goal, although the path that took him there was something even he couldn’t dream up.

Now 23, Davidson is the latest to earn the title of Lego Master Model Builder — and he’s one of only 22 people in the world who have the right to put that on their resume.

So, how does someone not only land a literal dream job but one as prestigious as Master Model Builder? With a few months of experience in his new gig under his belt, Davidson filled us in.

The Student Becomes the Master (Model Builder)

In spring 2018, while Davidson was pursuing a life-sciences education degree at the University of Akron in Ohio, he stumbled on a shared Facebook article that would change his career path.

A new Legoland Discovery Center was preparing to open in Columbus, Ohio, and they were on the hunt for the park’s official Master Model Builder.

Although Davidson had already left his 4-year-old self’s dream job behind to pursue “something more reasonable,” his curiosity was piqued. Here was a real-life opportunity, something he didn’t realize existed. Naturally, he applied along with thousands of others.

Davidson and over 70 other contestants from across the country were invited to Brick Factor, a two-day, multiround competition where he worked to outbuild the best of the best to earn the job.

A man builds a LEGO model during a contest.

“I know Brick Factor used a lot of the more basic bricks. They didn’t have any specialty stuff,” he says. “I got out a lot of my old Lego bricks and practiced putting those together in different geometric shapes to see if I could get something fluid from those blocky structures.”

Not only did he go back to his Lego roots to practice for the competition, contestants were told about the first round animal theme beforehand. So, he went into the contest with a bees-in-a-honeycomb model idea… which he abandoned at the last minute for a saltwater environment instead.

Despite his eleventh hour changeup, Davidson beat the country’s top builders and became the next Master Model Builder.

From the time he landed the job in May to the opening of Legoland Discovery Center Columbus in late September, he has been training with fellow Master Model Builders and creating models for the grand opening.

“It was completely surreal,” he says. “When it finally kind of clicked for me that this was actually a job that I had, it just felt so good coming into work every day.”

While the official salary wasn’t disclosed, a Glassdoor listing from 2011 reports the base pay as $ 15 to $ 16 per hour. And what exactly does the day-to-day work of a Master Model Builder entail? A whole lot more than building awe-inspiring Lego creations.

“I run the creative workshop… We have a different monthly model building every month, and I get to take the kids step by step through how to do that,” says Davidson.

The Discovery Center also offers Lego Education — weekly programs that support the schools’ core curriculum. Davidson spends that time teaching children about science, technology, engineering and math concepts that match up with what they’re currently learning in school.

“So, part of the job is definitely the building, but another part is being able to interact with the guests and make sure everyone has a great experience,” he says. “There’s a lot of different facets, and they balance each other really nicely week to week.”

What It Takes to Land a Dream Job

Snagging this opportunity of a lifetime meant Davidson had to completely pivot from his previous plan, which included leaving the University of Akron behind and moving to Columbus full time.

A dramatic career change can seem like a disorienting move for some, but Davidson says the work he was doing as a student applies to his current gig. Plus, he stresses that just because you leave formal education for a job, it doesn’t mean you stop learning. You continue your education — just in a different format.

He also thinks his previous experiences, especially his interest in education, gave him an edge in the competition. Aside from stellar Lego brick-building skills, the judges were looking for someone who was comfortable interacting with a crowd, children in particular.

For the final round of Brick Factor, instead of just constructing a model on his own, he brought kids from the audience on stage with him to build small pieces of the final product — a record player with a moving needle.

Going that extra mile elevated him above the other applicants. And while this example may seem specific to this particular gig, the overarching concept should be used by applicants pursuing a job in any field: Know your strengths, and don’t be scared to try something outside the norm to showcase how well you fit a position.

Davidson also has a bit of personal advice when it comes to landing a dream job:

“The idea of a dream job is something that doesn’t come around very often, but what you can do is pursue a passion,” he says. “Then in the off chance that you do get an opportunity, you’re prepared.”

He believes that if you have a passion — any passion — and work toward it, you’ll acquire universal skills that will push you forward into a dream position. It’s a sort of “If you build it, it will come” mentality. (Pun 100% intended.)

And if your passion happens to be Lego model building, you may be in luck. A new Legoland Discovery Center is scheduled to open in 2019 in San Antonio, which means Lego is on the hunt for Master Model Builder No. 23. Time to start strategizing your models and brushing up on your public speaking skills.

Davidson is living proof that our dream jobs, even the ones from childhood, aren’t out of reach. Just play to your strengths and always pursue new learning experiences — and keep an eye out for life-changing Facebook articles.

Former Moschino Employee Accuses Store Manager of Racial Profiling in New Lawsuit

Former Black Employee Files Suit Against Moschino for Racially Profiling Black Shoppers

Shamael Lataillade, a former employee at a Moschino boutique in West Hollywood, California, filed a lawsuit against the Italian luxury clothing company for racial discrimination against her and shoppers of color. In the suit, Lataillade claims that employees at the store were instructed to racially profile black patrons who didn’t appear to be wealthy and classify them using a racist codename.

Lataillade says a store supervisor would call black clientele “Serena” and ordered employees to follow and watch them closely if they weren’t wearing diamonds or name brand clothing, according to documents obtained by TMZ. Associates were also told to tell so-called “Serenas” that certain items were out of stock. The female supervisor even went as far as sometimes recording the license plate numbers of black clients. In one instance, she purportedly called the police to report a “suspicious” customer who Lataillade says turned out to be a high-profile rapper.

In addition, Lataillade, who is a Haitian-American woman, claims that the supervisor stereotyped her as someone who practices voodoo. Lataillade argues that she was then fired for speaking out about the “Serena” code word and other forms of racism she faced.

Ironically, the code word “Serena” seems to be a reference to iconic tennis star Serena Williams, who boasts a net worth around $ 180 million.

In response to the suit, which seeks unspecified damages, Moschino denied Lataillade’s charges and told TMZ the company “complies with applicable equal employment laws and values and respects all customers and clients regardless of their race or background.”

Nevertheless, this lawsuit points to the notorious phenomenon of “shopping while black,” an epidemic that dates back to the 20th century, when department stores prohibited black shoppers from using their main entrance and trying on clothes in fear their skin would tarnished items. Oprah Winfrey even fell victim to the “shopping while black” stigma back in 2013, when a Zurich store clerk snubbed the billionaire and suggested that she could not afford a $ 38,000 purse.

Former Michigan State President Charged With Lying to Police About Nassar’s Sexual Abuse

(LANSING, Mich.) —Ex-Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon was charged Tuesday with lying to police during an investigation of the handling of serial sexual abuser Larry Nassar — the third current or former campus official other than Nassar to face criminal charges in the scandal.

Simon, who stepped down under pressure in January, spoke with state police investigators on May 1. She is accused of making two false and misleading statements — that she was unaware of the nature of a sexual misconduct complaint that sparked the school’s 2014 Title IX probe of Nassar, and that she only knew a sports medicine doctor, not Nassar himself, was under investigation at that time.

If convicted of two felony and two misdemeanor counts of lying to a peace officer, the 71-year-old Simon faces up to four years in prison. The Mason resident is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Eaton County near Lansing.

The Associated Press left a message seeking comment from Simon’s attorney, Lee Silver. University spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said Simon — who remains on faculty despite resigning as president — is taking an immediate leave of absence, without pay “to focus on her legal situation.”

Simon is the fifth person to be criminally charged in the wake of Nassar’s convictions for molesting young female athletes under the guise of treatment. Numerous other people have lost their jobs or have been sued.

In August, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette charged former MSU gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages with lying to an investigator when she denied that witnesses told her years ago about being sexually assaulted by Nassar. In March, the ex-dean of the osteopathic medicine school, William Strampel , was charged with neglecting his duty to enforce examining-room restrictions imposed on Nassar after the 2014 Title IX investigation.

That probe, initiated by a patient, resulted in the school clearing Nassar.

In Texas, former USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny was charged last month with tampering with evidence while a former sports medicine trainer, Debra Van Horn , was charged in June with “acting as a party” with Nassar in the sexual assault of a child.

Hundreds of girls and women have said Nassar molested them when he was a physician, including while he worked at Michigan State and Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics, which trains U.S. Olympians. Nassar, 55, last year pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting nine victims and possessing child pornography, and his sentences equate to life in prison.

How Did We Get Here? Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Was Reportedly in Talks to Coach the Cleveland Browns, Says She’s Not Ready

The Cleveland Browns were reportedly mulling over interviewing George W. Bush’s former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, for a head coaching job — but it’s not happening.

via TMZ:

ESPN reported Sunday that the Browns’ front office was interested in possibly bringing Condi for an interview to replace recently-fired head coach Hue Jackson. She’s a huge Browns fan, and met with some of the owners during a game earlier this year.

Aside from that though … it’s unclear what, if any, professional experience she’d bring to the table … when it comes to football, that is. She’s got a pretty decent resume, otherwise.

The Browns’ general manager, John Dorsey, issued a statement shortly after the news spread like wildfire, saying in part … “Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is a great leader, possesses the highest possible character and also happens to be a Browns fan.”

He fully shot down the speculation, though, by adding … “Our coaching search will be thorough and deliberate, but we are still in the process of composing the list of candidates and Secretary Rice has not been discussed.”

As for Ms. Rice … she offered her own statement on the rumor, saying “I love my Browns — and I know they will hire an experienced coach to take us to the next level.”

After going on to advocate for the hiring of more women in coaching positions, she seemed to shut down the notion of a head coaching gig by saying … “BTW — I’m not ready to coach but I would like to call a play or two next season if the Browns need ideas! And at no time will I call for a “prevent defense.”

Condoleezza coaching in the NFL? Just put the whole 2018 in rice.

In a video in which he appears to be extremely stressed out, Tekashi speaks in front of the camera and revealed that his American tour had been canceled.

Tekashi was supposed to perform in Austin, Texas yesterday but he noted that he would not be present at the show.

At The Breakfast Club, he claimed that he only received about $ 300,000 of an alleged $ 3.5 million deal and everyone who watched the interview was definitely shocked to hear such a thing.

He also said that members of his booking company who were handling the deal, MTA, also reached the point in which they threatened the life of his mom.

According to TMZ, MTA is denying Tekashi’s claims.

An MTA rep said that there wasn’t such a deal in the first place and they also reported that MTA along with Tr3way Entertainment was handling his travel, security, and transport.

Hot New Hip Hop reported that MTA told TMZ that they booked nine upcoming shows in the US and two more in Mexico for him. They said that Tekashi received $ 700,000 for the shows.

There were also five more shows in Germany for which the rapper received $ 160,000. It seems that MTA is reportedly considering taking legal action against Tekashi for what he accused them of.

Her time at American Apparel capped a rough stretch in the company’s history with the departure of its founder, layoffs and two bankruptcies. She had previously served as American Apparel’s general counsel and chief administrative officer before she was appointed to the ceo position in September 2016, succeeding Paula Schneider. Grayson would later find herself shuttling the company through its second bankruptcy filing less than two months after her appointment. Part of the business was ultimately sold to Gildan Activewear Inc.
Grayson, in a statement, said her focus would be to continue the momentum set off by collaborations with Bella Hadid and Manchester United.
TowerBrook Capital Partners paid $ 835 million for True Religion in May 2013.

Former NFL Player Rae Carruth Released From Prison 18-Years After Having His Pregnant Girlfriend Killed [Video]

Former NFL player Rae Carruth has been released from prison after serving 18 years for the slaying of his pregnant girlfriend.

via NYDN:

The former first-round draft pick was released from Sampson Correctional Institution in North Carolina early Monday.

“I’m excited about just being out of here,” he told WSOC by phone a few days before his release. “I’m nervous just about how I’ll be received by the public. I still have to work. I still have to live. I have to exist out there and it just seems like there is so much hate and negativity toward me.”

Carruth had completed his sentence of 18 to 24 years. He did not speak to reporters as he left the prison on a chilly morning.

Now 44, Carruth was found guilty of orchestrating a plot to kill Cherica Adams to avoid paying child support. Adams was shot four times on Nov. 16, 1999 while driving her car in Charlotte, but managed to make a 911 call that pointed the finger at the NFL player.

Adams, eight months pregnant, died less than a month after the shooting. The child she was carrying was delivered, but suffers from permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy.

Carruth has said he wants to have a relationship with son Chancellor, who remains in the custody of his grandmother. Saundra Adams had said she would be there when Carruth got out of prison, but she was not present on Monday.

The former wide receiver was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 1997. Panthers center Frank Garcia said players were stunned when they heard the news of about his possible involvement in the murder.

“It would be like finding out the guy sitting in the cubicle next to you at work was arrested for murder,” Garcia said. “You just don’t always know people as well as you think you do.”

Some players testified at the trial, and others would spend time in the players’ lounge watching it on Court TV.

“That is one time where you were actually hiding from the cameras,” Garcia said. “You just wanted to stay low and not be involved. All along you’re asking yourself, ‘Did I miss any signs? How is somebody capable of this?’”

Carruth worked as a barber while behind bars, making about $ 1 per hour, according to North Carolina Department of Public Safety spokesman Jerry Higgins. He had signed a $ 3.7 million contract with the Panthers after being drafted.

Tamar Braxton Tells Her Former ‘The Real’ Co-Hosts Exactly How She Feels About Returning To The Show In Surprising Video

Oh, Boy! Tamar Braxton had an epic clap-back for the ladies of The Real who had a lot to say about her firing.

It is a known fact that Tamar is not one to hold her tongue and while appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen After Show, she threw her former co-hosts under the bus.

A caller asked her when was the last time she spoke with her ex-friends — Loni Love, Jeannie Mai, Adrienne Houghton, and Tamera Mowry-Housley.

The fan also wondered if she would ever return to the show. Tamar said: “The last time I spoke to them was at the Emmys. Would I return to do what?”

Andy Cohen added: “To be on the show, sweetie.” Tamar replied, “I don’t know.” Andy sensed where Vincent Herbert’s estranged wife was leaning and added, “you’re the best! I have a feeling the answer is no!”

You can watch the clip below.

Tamar’s ex-coworker, Loni, recently did an interview on the Breakfast Club, where she was asked why was Tamar fired from The Real, and she brought up Towanda’s name by saying: “I get on a plane to go to Atlanta [and] guess who’s in front of me, in first-class: Towanda. She told me they did an emergency episode of Braxton Family Values, and, ‘You need to see the episode.’”

She continued, “I had a person that worked at WEtv. The person that worked at WEtv contacted me [and said], ‘You are being named, the girls are being named,’ and I called my attorney, and I said, ‘You gotta call WEtv and let them know if they’re naming us, we’re gonna have to have legal action. That’s defamation of character.”

Towanda was not having it, and she hit back by writing: “What I’m not willing to do is allow ANYONE to create dissension. I absolutely was on that flight with @comiclonilove And how many years ago was this conversation? I’m amused at how the statements were paraphrased. It was NEVER a heads up…. AND as soon as I saw Loni on the flight, I IMMEDIATELY contacted Tamar to let her know. The interview circulating that I’m included in is bullsh*t.”

One fan said: “You better come through with this fabulous read!!!! Tamar has moved on to bigger and better things! It’s so pathetic that they still have to bring up old news!!! I haven’t watched it since she left!!!’

Tamar masters the art of the diss and she has no competition in this department.

Jim Taylor, Hall of Fame Former Fullback for the Green Bay Packers, Dies at 83

(GREEN BAY, Wis.) — Hall of Fame fullback Jim Taylor of the Green Bay Packers has died at 83.

The team says a family friend told the Packers he died early Saturday.

Taylor played on the great Packer teams and was the league’s MVP in 1962. He won four NFL titles and scored the first rushing touchdown in Super Bowl history.

Taylor spent 10 seasons in the NFL after being drafted in the second round by Green Bay in 1958 out of LSU. He joined a backfield that featured Paul Hornung and began to thrive when Packers coach Vince Lombardi took over in 1959.

Lombardi came up with the concept of the Packers Sweep, which featured pulling guards and Taylor or Hornung running around the end. But it was 6-foot, 216-pound Taylor who showed the play’s punishing promise.
