Southern Culture Foods Founder and Chef Shares Her Recipe for Success with You

You’ve probably scrolled past editorial stylized dishes on your favorite food blog or on social media. But it’s not every day that you learn about the business behind culinary entrepreneurship. Yes, it’s an entire industry. And if you’re ready to learn how to take the heat in the kitchen, Chef Erica Barrett, founder and CEO of Southern Culture Foods, wants to help you learn the recipe for success as a food entrepreneur.

Since launching her company in 2012, Southern Culture Foods products are being sold in 4,000 stores nationwide. And we hear that her pancake mix, waffle mix, and rubs are popular by demand! So, if you’ve been sitting on a family recipe, want to learn more about the science of cooking, or become an entrepreneur and food personality like her—she has you covered.

Barrett took a moment from throwing down in the kitchen to talk about all things food and business. Take a look at her bite-size tips for food entrepreneurs.

BLACK ENTERPRISE: There are years of training that goes into becoming a chef, how can those interested in food entrepreneurship learn the basics without formal training?

Erica Barrett: Being an entrepreneur is about figuring things out. When you embark on a food journey, you embark on the road less traveled. Read articles, research everything, exhaust all resources, reach out to people that you admire. Make mistakes as experience is the best teacher.

How did you turn your career as a chef into a successful business, Southern Culture Foods?

I really didn’t do anything outside of step out on faith. God did the rest. My journey has been an everyday journey of learning, growing, networking, structuring my goals, and working tirelessly to make Southern Culture a household name.

What is the secret sauce to the business of culinary entrepreneurship?

The secret sauce is learning about the food industry every day, studying trends, and striving to be extremely different.

You wrote the cookbook, Shuga & Seoul, which seems like a natural move for a chef but what did you learn about culinary entrepreneurship through that process?

Writing a book taught me about structure, being organized, and creating a culinary road map for others to follow.

How important is it for food entrepreneurs to position themselves as personalities and build their social media presence?

Social media is huge and can be life-changing. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, separating yourself comes from being totally different. We have an opportunity to change the world through food, so don’t take it lightly.

Have you been able to monetize your online presence? If so, what advice do you have for other food entrepreneurs?

Yes, I use FB ads; I also do influencer ads, videos, FB lives and email lists. Building a community online is important to success. My advice is to find your unique calling in food and trust your gut. Be bold in who you are as a chef an entrepreneur and success will follow.

Planet Blue Founder Creates Label Sun Becomes Her

LOS ANGELES — Planet Blue founder Ling-Su Chinn’s been busy over the past several months building out new contemporary brand Sun Becomes Her with business partner Githa Duncker.
The line’s launch had been expected after WWD reported last summer Chinn had left the company she founded and built more than 20 years ago in a bid to get back to what she called her roots: focusing on branding and designing a line that embodies the West Coast for a global consumer.
Chinn had pointed out the challenges that come with also having to balance business objectives around growth in new markets as being a struggle that took time away from more creative endeavors. What she built was sizable with the company’s new ceo reporting last year volume north of $ 40 million.
She still retains what she called a “significant ownership” stake in the company but preferred not to further discuss the business.
“I just really wanted to launch something not being tied to the commercial hassles and timeframes,” said Chinn, who serves as creative director of the new brand. “I really wanted to launch a more elevated product, more thoughtfully designed product that we didn’t have any timeframes in doing.”
That’s given way to a launch

Fyre Festival Founder Billy McFarland Ordered to Pay $2.8 Million in Lawsuit

Billy McFarland has been ordered to pay EHL Funding the $ 2.8 million he was loaned for the ill-fated Fyre Festival.

via Complex:

EHL Funding sued Billy McFarland and Ja Rule over the $ 3 million they loaned to the pair in the weeks leading up to Fyre Festival, and they’ve won a default judgment because McFarland reportedly never responded to the lawsuit. Considering he’s currently serving a six year sentence for wire fraud, however, it’s not completely surprising. The judge has ordered McFarland to give EHL back $ 2,891,600 and 30 percent interest. This fine doesn’t include EHL’s attorney fees, which McFarland will also need to pay.

Ja Rule, on the other hand, is getting off easy. The judge involved in the case did not order him to pay back any of the money, instead placing the blame squarely on McFarland. Speaking with TMZ about the lawsuit, he responded, “this is FAKE NEWS GUYS LOL.” Since he responded to the lawsuit, it’s unclear if he will be hit with any fines in the future.

Ever since the documentaries premiered on their respective streaming services, Ja Rule has defended his actions and has maintained that he never intended to harm anyone. “I had an amazing vision to create a festival like NO OTHER!!! I would NEVER SCAM or FRAUD anyone what sense does that make???,” he tweeted. He recently allowed fans to curse him out during a New Jersey concert, encouraging the audience to yell back, “Fuck Ja Rule.”

Who do you think he’ll scam to come up with that much money?

Black Enterprise Founder: ‘We Owe An Apology to Martin Luther King, Jr.’

Decades after his death, the legacy and contributions of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the sacrifices he made to bring justice to African Americans and to challenge America to live up to its ideals, are being celebrated more than ever before. It’s fair to say that we have done justice to King’s memory. But the truth is America has not done justice to his dream. In fact, I, and the rest of King’s generation, now between the ages of 70 and 85, owe King an apology.

Due to our lack of leadership and accountability, and despite the conspicuous success of a minority of African Americans, we have failed to do what it takes to lead our people to the promised land of freedom, equality, and the full measure of the American dream.

Two months after the assassination of Dr. King, Earl G. Graves Sr. escorts Mrs. Coretta Scott King on June 8th, 1968 to the funeral of Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

King’s dream was about equal opportunity and economic justice for all black Americans, not just an exceptional few. After making progress toward those goals into the late ’80s, we somehow lost our desire to pursue King’s agenda. Ultimately, we simply stopped fighting, as if we no longer believed that what King died for was worth continuing to sacrifice and fight for. And for that, Dr. King, I am sorry. You left us with an example and a challenge to make a better world for our children. And we’ve failed you.

The evidence shows that our failure is as complete as it is indisputable. Nearly 60 years after Brown v. Board of Education, American education remains largely segregated by race, with black children bearing the brunt of failing public schools. We’re failing King in economic justice. Today, the wealth gap between African Americans and white Americans is wider than ever, and black businesses remain largely excluded from economic power centers–from Hollywood and Silicon Valley to Wall Street and Madison Avenue.

The quality of life for African Americans in our urban centers has hardly improved, and in many cases, has worsened, since many urban areas were destroyed by riots in the aftermath of King’s assassination. Sadly, in nearly every area, from healthcare outcomes to high school drop-out rates to entire generations of African Americans trapped in our prison system, the world we’re leaving to our children and grandchildren is no better than the one we inherited.

I was assigned by Sen. Robert Kennedy to assist Coretta Scott King with getting her slain husband’s body from Memphis to Atlanta. I know intimately the ultimate sacrifice that King made–based on the promise of future generations–so that we would have the opportunities that we enjoy today. It’s a promise we have failed to keep.

Our fight for freedom and justice is not over. We have not won. Memorials aside, my generation owes an apology to King for having dropped the baton, for not taking the torch he lit and running with it. Now, it is up to our children and grandchildren to continue the fight to ensure that King’s dream is deferred no longer, and that all African Americans, not just a select, privileged, or fortunate few, reach the promised land of freedom, equality, justice, and opportunity.

Etnies, Emerica Founder Keeps Tight Grip on Independence

LAKE FOREST, CALIF. — Sole Technology’s always been one of those quiet anomalies — an action sports conglomerate of sorts without being corporate.
It’s largely to do with founder Pierre-André Senizergues, the pro skater who built a multibrand portfolio of skate and snow brands based around technology and fostering a sense of community. Senizergues, for nearly three decades now, has steered the Sole Tech ship, which includes the etnies, éS, Emerica, Altamont and ThirtyTwo brands with e-commerce retailers ranging from Amazon and Zappos to big boxes such as PacSun and core shops in the vein of Active Ride Shop and Jack’s Surfboards. Etnies alone counts more than 2,000 retailers globally.
Senizergues’ latest milestone, though, isn’t so much around the product as it is the sport rooted in his business. The company earlier this month celebrated the 15-year anniversary of the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest, an example of a successful public-private partnership between Sole Technology and the city. About 2,000 people came out for the one-day celebration.
“Our brand has been more an inclusive type of brand. That’s why we created this skatepark,” Senizergues said. “We started the skatepark 20 years ago, but it took five years to make it. The idea was for
