Tamar Braxton’s Ex-Nanny Finally Paid In Full After Sale Of Calabasas Mansion

Tamar Braxton’s former nanny, who won a $ 213,000 judgment against the reality star last year, has finally received her payment, thanks to the sale of the singer’s 13,716-square-foot Calabasas estate, reports The Blast.

Earlier this year, Sally Lou Perkins filed a lien against the 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom home of Tamar and her husband Vince Herbert, which meant if the property was sold, Perkins would be paid from the sale.

The original asking price for the home was $ 15 million, when the house was put on the market in October following Tamar’s divorce filing. The lien filed by Perkins demanded she be paid $ 213,431.37 from a judgment she won relating to unpaid wages.

On August 8, Tamar and Vince sold their home for $ 9,250,000, far less than the asking price and even less than the $ 10.5 million they paid to buy it in 2012.

Sources tell The Blast that Perkins received a check this week, which paid her entire judgment in full. She now hopes to use her victory to help other domestic workers in similar situations, and has plans to work with the New York-based organization National Domestic Workers Alliance, reports The Blast.

Perkins was hired to care for the estranged couple’s son Logan during Tamar’s Love & War Tour in 2014. She said her duties included preparing meals and snacks, transportation, getting Logan dressed, creating nurturing activities to stimulate development, attending to his social and emotional needs, cleaning bedrooms and doing laundry.

Perkins had originally filed a claim with the State of California Labor Standards Enforcement and they were the ones who ordered Braxton to pay.

Watching Crazy Rich Asians in a room full of other Asians

Watching Crazy Rich Asians in a room full of other Asians

Watching Crazy Rich Asians in a room full of other Asians

This essay contains light spoilers for Crazy Rich Asians, which opened in theaters today, August 15th.

There’s a moment in Crazy Rich Asians when we hear an Asian accent. Peik Lin (played by Awkwafina) is walking Rachel (Constance Wu) through her family’s giant mansion, where the gold-heavy decor is described as “Donald Trump’s bathroom.” Then the accent appears—the one that has haunted almost every Asian American kid since the days of Mr. Yunioshi and Long Duk Dong. The accent that tells the white people in the audience, “You are allowed to laugh at Asian people.”

In Crazy Rich Asians, that accent comes from Ken Jeong, who plays Awkwafina’s father and first appears dressed as an Asian Elvis. I tense up. “Oh no,” I think to myself. Even in a film that’s supposed to be a historic win for Asians in Hollywood, with an all-Asian cast, we can’t escape that accent. We can’t escape being the butt of the joke.

And then something wonderful happens.

Jeong drops the accent and says, “I’m just joking. I don’t have an accent. I went to Cal State Fullerton.”

I’m in a theatre with almost 200 people—95 percent of them are Asian—and the room erupts into laughter, me included. It was relief. Like the film was saying, “Asian accents aren’t funny, and fuck you for thinking they are.”

Ken Jeong in "Crazy Rich Asians"
Warner Bros. Pictures

When I walked into Crazy Rich Asians, I tried to keep my expectations for the movie low. As my friend Christine (who is Korean-American) put it, “It has to be really, really shitty for me not to like it.” I wasn’t going to play into the Tiger Mom stereotype and expect excellence. I just really, really didn’t want it to suck.

As Christine and I sat down with our beers at a complimentary screening for Asian American journalists, I looked around the room and thought to myself, This is going to be a tough crowd. As director Jon M. Chu told the Hollywood Reporter, “If our movie does well, four [Asian-centric] projects will go into production….if it doesn’t, they’re going to be in unknown states.” The future of Asians in Hollywood was at stake, and if the journalists around me didn’t like the film, what hope did the movie have with a more general audience?

Two hours later, I had watched the “poor” Chinese American Rachel navigate the opulent lifestyle of the rich and Singaporean and manage to leave with her principals intact. I saw her share a kiss with Nick (Henry Golding), and the audience exploded into applause at the end credits. I turned to Christine: “What did you think?” She had read the book by Kevin Kwan on which the movie was based. She responded with, “I wanted it to be more about the family than their love story,” but overall, she liked it.

She then said, “I have never seen so many Asians Americans on-screen.”

When I asked other people at the screening what they thought of Crazy Rich Asians, the reactions were as varied as the characters in the movie. The people on screen came in all shapes and sizes. They were funny and romantic, conniving and serious.

Asians are not a monolith, and the film—and reactions to the film—made that clear.

“It reached me on a personal, professional and spiritual level. After a while, I forgot I was Asian,” enthused Toan, who is Chinese-American. “I was watching Astrid [played by Gemma Chan], and seeing her insecurities and her experience with adultery—that happened to someone in my family. And there’s an LGBT character and it resonated with some of my experiences. And I understood the immigrant experience with Rachel.”

While some audience members I talked to loved the film as much as Toan, others found it to be lacking. “I didn’t see anyone who looked like me except for one Filipino lady,” said Clare, who is Filipino-American. Indeed, the film has come under criticisms for focusing too much on East Asians, and not on the the Indian and Malaysian population of Singapore; the only “brown faces” in the movie are servants. “Like Astrid’s maids, they were all Filipino!” exclaimed Clare.

Still, Clare admits it was “refreshing” to see that many Asians in a movie. She plans to see it again.

Unfortunately, when you’re part of a marginalized group and the opportunities to see yourself in pop culture are so few and far between (25 years since Joy Luck Club, 13 years since Memoirs of a Geisha), the very little you receive bears the burden of perfection. It must represent your particular story or else it’s a disappointment—because there probably won’t be another opportunity.

Already, there are criticisms of Crazy Rich Asians for not being all things to all Asian people, as if it’s possible for one movie to accurately represent 48 different countries and their diasporas. That would be like expecting The Godfather to represent all white people.

For me, as someone who grew up as a crazy poor immigrant Asian—whose parents actually did encourage me to follow my dreams—the movie wasn’t my perfect Asian American movie. But after seeing the film, and laughing along to lines like, “God forbid we lose the ancient Chinese tradition of guilting your children,” I realized that the film didn’t need to be perfect for me to love it. I could love it on its own terms: as a romantic comedy with a distinctly Asian American sensibility.

The leads were charming and beautiful, and they oozed chemistry. The supporting characters were memorable and the jokes were funny. And while I didn’t relate to every moment that occurred on screen, I certainly related to some things. When Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) asked Nick, “Did you eat yet?” as a greeting, I was reminded of my own mom who shows her love not with words, but with food. When Eleanor tells Rachel, “You are an American,” it reminded me of my first trip to Vietnam. I quickly learned that, over there, I wasn’t considered Vietnamese—even though I was born there.

And Crazy Rich Asians may be the first Hollywood film to explain why Asian Americans call each other bananas: “Yellow on the outside, white on the inside.”

As Constance Wu wrote on Twitter, “I know CRW won’t represent every Asian American. So for those who don’t feel seen, I hope there is as story you find soon that does represent you.”

Crazy Rich Asians is an important first step to more: more stories, more representation, more complexity.

This week, I’ll be seeing Crazy Rich Asians for a second time, not necessarily because I’m aching to see it again, but because if see it multiple times—and those around me at that screening see it multiple times—then that movie will do well at the box office, and that will lead to more Asian-led films. Perhaps seeing Crazy Rich Asians again will lead me one step closer to my perfect Asian American movie.

This Guy Turned a Basement Full of Garbage Into a $30K/Month Business

Alex Broches has been broke, homeless and suicidal.

But those low points are well behind him now that he’s running a successful business. What’s it built on?

Garbage.

Broches owns and operates The Junk Removal Dudes, which he describes as a cross between movers and garbage men. He’s been pleasantly surprised to discover that there are a whole lot of people with junk to get rid of.

“In a slow month, we’ll do like $ 8,000 to $ 10,000, gross sales,” says Broches, whose business services northern Illinois. “In a busy month, we’ll do around $ 30,000.”

The Junk Removal Dudes began back in 2015 when Broches’ mother, who owns a house-cleaning business, asked him to clear the junk from one of her client’s basements.

Broches split the first job with a friend who had a pickup truck. The duo hauled away old toys, holiday decorations and furniture. They made $ 200 for less than an hour’s work.

“[I did] it for the extra money and just to help,” the 30-year-old entrepreneur says. “And afterward, I was like, ‘Huh, that was kind of fun, actually.’”

Within a week, Broches’ mom referred another customer, so he borrowed his friend’s truck again. And again.

“More calls started coming in; my mom kept sending me more customers… and I’m like, ‘There might be some money in this, actually,’” Broches says. “So a couple weeks passed by. I started a website, put it on Google and then the calls really started to come in.”

Broches now has five employees and expects to double that number within the next few months. He’s considering franchising next year if the company continues to grow.

After he scored his third client, Broches stopped borrowing the truck and invested in his own — the company now has three trucks in its fleet.

Turning Garbage Into Gold

Broches admits that cleaning out basements, barns and hoarders’ homes might not be everyone’s idea of a dream job.

Some people would be grossed out a little bit,” says Broches, who says he’s cleaned out places that range from a musty basement full of cobwebs to a garage infested with maggots.

But his most unusual find? Pickles.

“[A woman] died and we had to go clean the property,” Broches says. “In the basement, she had tons and tons of jars of pickles that she was collecting since the 1970s… She had these little notes in the house saying, ‘Hey, if the world is going to end, this is what I’m going to eat to survive for a couple months.’

“That one was a little out there.”

With the exception of the pickle lady, most of Broches’ clients are older people and their relatives clearing out houses. The jobs have produced all kinds of interesting finds, including family photos from the early 1900s, antique dolls and a full-size knight’s armor.

“I’m like a kid in a candy store,” Broches says. “It doesn’t even seem like work to me — it just seems like every day is an adventure.”

Darkness Before the Light

Broches’ success in the garbage removal business was built on a heap of other failed ventures.

Along with a string of unfulfilling jobs, Broches launched a lawn care service but lost the money he made — plus thousands more that he borrowed from his mom and brother — investing in a social media website he started at age 21.

He says that each job left him feeling more depressed until he was convinced he would never succeed.

“All the times I failed and failed and failed — at the time, I thought it was the end of the world,” says Broches, who details his personal and professional struggles in the book A Dark Path to Light. “Everything was going down. I lost all my money, my mental health, my physical health.”

At his lowest point, he walked out to the woods in his backyard with a rope in hand, Broches chronicles in his book. After a long night contemplating suicide, he decided he had to stop brooding over the failures and instead focus on improving his mental, physical and fiscal health.

Learning From the Biggest Mistake

The failure of Broches’ website, College Junkee, was particularly painful for him, as his attempts to obtain funding for it were featured on MTV’s “True Life.” In the episode, he pitched the website to OKCupid CEO Sam Yagan, who eviscerated College Junkee, rating it a 1 out of 10 for being useless and nonfunctional.

“With the internet startup idea that I had… I thought if I just keep putting money into it — advertising, whatever — it would get better,” Broches says. “I just didn’t know what I was doing.”

In retrospect, the experience taught him the skills he needed to build a successful junk removal business.

“I realized that those were all valuable learning lessons — how to deal with customers, how to improve a business, how to streamline business,” Broches says. “I realized with this business that I had to think lean… And I’m proud to say that this [junk removal] business that I started was net profitable after day one.”

Passing Along his Wisdom

Broches says his business, which serves northern Illinois, makes anywhere from $ 8,000 to $ 30,000 in gross sales. Photo by Katherine McLaughlin

Among Broches employees is 18-year-old Adam Cyr, who has worked for him part-time for just over a year.

Cyr, who plans to go to college to study engineering, says Broches has always been generous about sharing what he’s learned about entrepreneurship.

I could see myself down the line starting my own engineering firm,” Cyr says. “[Broches] has always offered — if I ever needed some advice for starting a business.”

Broches’ chief piece of advice to other entrepreneurs: Don’t be afraid to fail.

“Take risks because the thing is, if you win, then you’re successful, but if you lose, you’re wiser,” Broches says, adding that his previous business setbacks were “almost necessary” to become successful.

The only true failures, Broches says, are people who are too afraid to try and who thus miss out on the opportunity to do something they love.

“I don’t think there’s anything worse than regret,” Broches says. “I think regret is worse than death.”

Denzel Curry Drops the Full Version of ‘TAI300’

For the past few days, Denzel Curry has been releasing parts of his new album TAI300 as EPs. Most recently, he released the full LP to streaming platforms. The 13-song album features guest appearances from Goldlink, Billie Eilish, J.I.D, JPEGMAFIA, Nyyjerya, Twelve’len and ZillaKami. Plus production from from FnZ, DJ Dahi, Ronny J, Illmind, Charlie Heat and Mickey De Grand IV, and more. On his new album, Curry sings more than usual and he explains the importance of melodies in today’s music scene.

“The reason why I sing on most of the songs on this record is because you have to realize that melody is what wins,” says Curry in a recent interview. “Melody wins every time. Melody is always gonna win. That’s why I started singing more on this record. When I was just straight up rapping, I feel like everyone wasn’t paying attention as much, but the moment I started singing, case in point, ‘Clout Cobain,’ it affected more people.”

TAI300 is out now on Loma Vista and stream the full album below.

Olympian KYLE MACK | Full Interview (USA Surf Championships)

Professional snowboarder and Olympian Kyle Mack takes to the waves at the USA Surfing Championship at Trestles. Mack is known for throwing down gnarly airs and at only 20-years-old has already been the first to land a handful of airs in competitions with his innovative style. Some could even compare the young snowboarder to WSL Competitor Filipe Toldeo, who is also known to give a good air show.

Look forward to seeing big things from this all-star athlete, even out in the water!
