Idris Elba to Turn Villainous in ‘Fast and Furious’ Spin-off; Here’s Everything We Know

Idris Elba to Turn Villainous in 'Fast and Furious' Spin-off; Here's Everything We Know

Update: In recent years, we've become accustomed to seeing Idris Elba in heroic roles, as in Thor: Ragnarok (above). So it's somewhat surprising to hear that he will portray a villain in the first spin-off from the Fast and Furious series, per Variety.

Elba came to attention as an elegant drug kingpin on HBO's The Wire and since then has impressed in a wide variety of roles. He played a villainous role in Star Trek: Beyond not too long ago, which actually seemed atypical at this…

Porn Stars Are Furious With Rudy Giuliani: ‘A Storm’s a-Coming’

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Look at her. Look at the way she dresses. Blonde hair, fake boobs. And she’s in THAT business. A woman like that isn’t credible.

Adult actresses often endure this type of discrimination—with many even accepting it as the norm. When Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, implied that Stormy Daniels’ moral character should be determined by her looks and occupation, he echoed the very issues so many generations of women have gone up against.

Asked if he believed Daniels’ account of her alleged affair with Trump during a Tel Aviv speaking engagement, Giuliani made a show of disgust, saying, “Stormy Daniels? Pfft. Look at her.” Off-camera, a woman’s voice can be heard reprimanding him: “You have to respect on this stage every woman.”

Vin Diesel Reveals Justin Lin as Director of 'Fast and Furious' Parts 9 and 10

As was hinted way back in 2014, Justin Lin is returning to the Fast and Furious franchise for the final two installments. Well, we're not sure they'll be the last of the series, but parts 9 and 10 will indeed be helmed by Lin, the director who revived the property with the third, fourth, fifth and sixth movies.

Vin Diesel broke the news with a Facebook Live video post, not just confirming Lin's return but showing the filmmaker on set. Also making an appearance in the video is…

Dwayne Johnson Shares More 'Fast and Furious' Spin-off Plans

For all his success as a worldwide box office attraction, Dwayne Johnson has yet to lead his own movie franchise. That's all about to change.

Early in his career, Johnson appeared The Mummy Returns, which was a huge success, and then starred in the spin-off movie The Scorpion King, which was a more modest success. By the time he made his first appearance as Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs, first in Fast Five (2011), he was an established star who gave the Fast and Furious…

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Soars Past ‘Fate Of The Furious’ At The Box Office

LOS ANGELES, (Variety.com) – And just like that, Star-Lord and his band of super buddies are back on top of the box office.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” blasted into domestic theaters this weekend to kick off the summer box office to the tune of $ 145 million at 4,347 locations. The latest from Disney and Marvel was expected to make $ 140 million, but possibly more by some analysts considering the studio’s track record and enthusiasm that the first go-around generated.

“We feel great. It is a spectacular number, period,” said Disney’s distribution chief Dave Hollis. “This is such a fresh and exciting film … it’s the kind of event that gets people excited about going to theaters.”

Returning to deliver more bright colors, wise-cracks and another groovy soundtrack, James Gunn directed and scripted the movie starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper as the titular guardians. The film also features expanded roles for Karen Gillan and Michael Rooker, as well as prominent new characters played by Kurt Russell and Pom Klementieff. The movie functions as an escape thriller, and an origin story for Pratt’s Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord). Gunn is already attached to write and direct the third “Guardians” movie.

“Guardians 2” came into its opening domestic weekend with well over $ 100 million in the bank from international ticket sales. It made more than $ 106 million in its first weekend at 58 percent of overseas territories. This weekend the movie earned an estimated $ 124 million abroad after opening in several more major foreign markets including Korea, Russia and China. That raises the global weekend total to about $ 269 million and the movie’s total global take so far to $ 428 million.

The latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe entered theaters with high expectations. When the original was released in 2014, it was a relatively unknown property that managed to smash records for the month of August when it opened to more than $ 94 million domestically (still modest by Disney/Marvel standards). But word-of-mouth kept building, and by the end of its theatrical run, it had raked in $ 333 million domestically and $ 440 million overseas.

“The strength of the brand is a license to take risks,” Hollis said, noting that the “Guardians” films are the perfect counter to any notion of superhero movie fatigue. “These films have never just been superhero films, they are genre films. Each of these movies feels wholly and uniquely different.”

Now the rag-tag group of heroes has entered the public consciousness. “Guardians 2” was struck with the double-edged sword of familiarity ― the original spawned a fondness and a fandom for the characters and their world (that led to a much larger opening for the second installment), but a sequel is hard-pressed to recreate or recapture the same type of surprise and enthusiasm that struck audiences in 2014.

“It’s all about strategy when it comes to Marvel and with ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2,’ the notion of moving what was an August release for the first film to the key summer kick off spot in May clearly paid huge dividends for Disney,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “For this ‘Guardians’ to post the sixth best bow for the month is incredibly impressive given the Cinderella story of the title’s ascension from being a little known question mark of a movie, to a global phenomenon.”

“Guardians 2” enjoyed the widest Imax opening ever ― 1,088 screen in 69 markets. The film made $ 25 million on Imax screens including $ 13 million in North America. $ 174 million of the movie’s global earnings this weekend came from 3D ticket sales, according to RealD, which was responsible for about $ 72 million of the take.

There isn’t much of note at the box office this weekend apart from “Guardians.” Universal’s “Fate of the Furious” cruised into second with $ 8.5 million at 3,595 theaters. The film now has over $ 207 million at the domestic box office. “The Boss Baby,” from Fox, took third with $ 6.2 million from 3,284 locations. Pantelion’s “How to be a Latin Lover,” which seduced its way past “The Circle” last weekend to post strong numbers and a second place finish, slides into fourth with $ 5.3 million from only 1,203 spots. And Disney’s other box office animal “Beauty and the Beast,” rounds out the top five with $ 5 million at 2,680 locations ― the movie is now in its eighth weekend of release.

In limited launch, the Orchard’s “The Dinner” made $ 669,000 from 509 locations. The new release is a thriller toplined by Richard Gere and Laura Linney, adapted from the Dutch novel of same name by Herman Koch about two couples with family issues. “3 Generations” got a six-theater limited release from the Weinstein Company, and made $ 20,000. The drama about identity and acceptance stars Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon, and Elle Fanning as a transgender teen.

Get used to seeing “Guardians 2” on top. The big-budget superhero flick should coast past Warner Bros.’ “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” next weekend, and possibly the following frame as well when it will face the long-awaited reboot from Fox, “Alien: Covenant.”

‘Fate Of The Furious’ Becomes The Second ‘Fast And The Furious’ Movie To Earn $1 Billion

The “Fast and the Furious” pedal earned another medal this weekend, with “The Fate of the Furious” grossing $ 1 billion.

As of Sunday, the eighth “Furious” installment has earned $ 192.7 million domestically and a whopping $ 867.6 million overseas, according to Universal Pictures’ estimates. It’s the 30th movie in history ― and the second in the franchise, after 2015’s “Furious 7” ― to join the billionaires’ club.

“The Fate of the Furious” pulled this off after just 17 days in theaters, the same amount it took “Furious 7.” The year’s first billion-dollar release, “Beauty and the Beast,” required almost a month to hit that mark. “Fate” is also the highest-grossing film directed by an African-American.

This news comes as no surprise, given the increasing international fervor surrounding these high-octane movies. Since “Fast & Furious,” the fourth movie in the series, was released in 2009, each installment has outpaced its predecessor domestically and globally. Universal, which is enjoying a bang-up year at the box office thanks to “Fate,” “Get Out” and “Split,” already has two more “Fast and the Furious” sequels planned, and studio executives have reportedly discussed a potential spin-off surrounding Dwayne Johnson’s and Jason Statham’s characters. Plus, as we pointed out a couple of weeks ago, “The Fate of the Furious” introduces a certain baby who could extend the story’s shelf life far beyond its current expiration date

Other franchises with multiple $ 1 billion earners include “Star Wars,” “The Avengers,” “Transformers” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

In other weekend box-office news, “How To Be a Latin Lover” opened to a decent $ 12 million, while the big-screen adaptation of Dave Eggers’ popular cyber-panic novel “The Circle” collected $ 9.1 million, a drowsy figure for a title released on more than 3,000 screens. The weekend’s big surprise was the Indian fantasy “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion,” which took in an estimated $ 10 million despite a mere 425-theater opening.

The rest of the Top 10 includes “The Boss Baby,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Going in Style,” “Gifted,” “Smurfs: The Lost Village” and “Born in China.”

‘The Fate Of The Furious’ Just Had The Biggest Global Opening Weekend Of All Time

Thanks in large part to the Chinese market, “The Fate of the Furious” just had the biggest worldwide opening weekend in Hollywood history.

The movie, which was internationally released on Friday, pulled in an estimated $ 532.5 million globally, Universal Pictures announced. Although the official figures don’t come out until Monday morning, “The Fate of the Furious” appears to be on track to best “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which currently holds the record at $ 529 million following its 2015 release.

“The Fate of the Furious” raked in $ 100.2 million inside the U.S. and $ 432.3 million aboard ― the latter is the most any film has ever made in its international debut weekend. “Jurassic World” held the previous record with $ 316 million.

That international help was needed, as it appears that the eighth movie in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise was not able to pull in domestically anything close to what “Furious 7” did in the U.S. during its opening weekend two years ago.

This is truly a global franchise,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore, told Variety. “These movies translate perfectly into any culture. Fast cars, outrageous stunts — that’s the international language for something everybody loves.”

There is one note, however: When “The Force Awakens” opened, China was not part of the initial release. Considering that the “Furious” franchise pulled in $ 190 million of its weekend haul in China, the Star Wars franchise might still be the king of the movie kingdom.

Film Review: ‘The Fate of the Furious’

If there were a hierarchy of action cinema, you’d find a masterpiece of speed-demon nihilism like “Mad Max: Fury Road” at the very top, and on the next level a superior Bond or Bourne film or “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” At the bottom would be the visceral, live-wire kicks of B-movie brutality. Somewhere in… Read more »

Jordana Brewster Gets Misty-Eyed Discussing Paul Walker And The ‘Fast & Furious’ Franchise

For the past 16 years, Jordana Brewster has been a part of the “Fast & Furious” franchise. But next month, she won’t be reprising her role as Mia Toretto in the eighth installment, “The Fate of the Furious.”

Although fans may be disappointed, Brewster hinted that it just didn’t make sense for her to be in the movie due to Paul Walker’s absence. The actor tragically died in a November 2013 car crash at the age of 40.

In “Furious 7,” Brian (Walker) apparently leaves the crew to be with Mia and their children. So it appears screenwriter Chris Morgan thought it would be best to leave Mia out of the current storyline, which sees Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) enter a world of crime and betray those closest to him, all thanks to a new villain, Cipher (Charlize Theron).

“This one’s loaded because it’s the first one that Paul’s not in, so it’s very sad in a way,” a misty-eyed Brewster told The Huffington Post during a Build Series interview Wednesday. “But I think the franchise has evolved throughout the years and each one transitions into something new. I think the addition of Charlize is amazing, the addition of Helen Mirren is amazing. [But] it’s strange not to be a part of it, because it’s been a part of my life for so many years.”

Brewster is especially intrigued by the synopsis, since she can’t imagine Dom turning on his family so easily.

“When I saw that twist, it made me want to watch it. ‘Cause I was like, ‘How? What happens?’ They can’t possibly end on that note, so … we’ll see,” she said.

Still, family is family, and Brewster is and will always be close with the “Fast and Furious” cast.

“I’m friends with Vin, I’m very close with his sister, as well, and I love Michelle [Rodriguez] to death, and I love Luda, so I feel like I see them regardless. But again, there’s a huge missing element,” she added, of Walker.

Moving forward, the actress hopes to explore more dynamic roles while using her experience with the franchise to her advantage.

“With something as big as ‘Fast and Furious’ … it gives you liberty to play in your career, because now I get to go off and find material that might be really fun,” she explained. “It’s fun getting to be a little bit older because I find that the roles are little more eclectic, a little more rich. I’m not always playing the ingénue. It just gives me creative license in a way.”

Watch the full Build Series interview with Jordana Brewster, where she discusses her current partnership with Zyrtec, below.
