Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Other Celebs Donate To Funeral For Black Gay Teen Who Committed Suicide

2017 CFDA Fashion Awards - Arrivals

Gabrielle Union, her husband Dwyane Wade and other celebs have donated to the family of Nigel Shelby, a 15-year-old who recently killed himself after being bullied for being gay.

According to TMZ, sources told them that the couple along with Lena Waithe, Ludacris and Janelle Monae, helped donate to Shelby’s mother, Camika Shelby, who put her son to rest in a beautiful ceremony on Saturday (April 27). The family also raised over $ 40,000 from a separate GoFundMe campaign.

Last month, Nigel sadly made headlines when he took his life after battling depression and being bullied for his sexual orientation by students at Huntsville High School. Apparently, Nigel came out two years ago.

The Alabama teen’s mother told ABC News that her son was a “a vibrant, outgoing and fun-loving child who would do anything he could to make others smile.”

“Nigel was a sweetheart. He loved everybody, he would help anybody. He was an angel,” Shelby said. “I just wish people could’ve seen how special he was while he was still here.”

Camika also shared that her son was seeking counseling and was close to being medicated for his mental health issues. But he still struggled with the fact that he was gay.

“I wish he could have been fully accepted while he was here because it was hard for him. He struggled,” she said.

“He used to ask me sometimes ‘Mama, why couldn’t I just be normal?’ And I’m like, ‘Baby, you are normal. Who you choose to love has nothing to do with the person that you are.’”

“I’m truly blessed that I got to spend 15 years with this child, but it also makes me so sad to know that he’s no longer with me. He was my motivation to keep going. He always kept me lifted up, so to not have that anymore is heartbreaking,” she said.

Even with a loving and accepting parent, Nigel still took his life, which is why it’s so incredibly important that as a community we hold up and love our Black LGBT children. Every single last one of us.

A2016 report released by the Center for American Progress found that Black LGBTQ folks experience higher rates of homelessness during youth than their peers;  have higher rates of unemployment or underemployment; and face overall lower rates of pay and higher rates of poverty.

Another report conducted by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network found that nearly half of Black/African-American LGBTQ students felt unsafe due to their sexual orientation; over a third felt unsafe because of their gender expression and nearly 40 percent of Black/ African-American students were more likely to experience in-school discipline.

So it’s clear that our children need us now more than ever. All Black lives matter.

Rest in power Nigel.

Gabrielle Union took her family to Pride Parade

OHMYGOSSIP — Gabrielle Union took her “entire household” to a Pride Parade.
The 46-year-old actress took her step-sons children Zaire, 17, and Zion, 11 – whose father is Gabrielle’s husband Dwayne Wade – and her five-month-old daughter Kaavia to the Miami Beach Drive Festival earlier this month, because she believes attending the events – which are designed to celebrate the LGBT community – are “part of being a global citizen”.
Speaking to Us Weekly magazine, she said: “It feels normal. My mom took me to my first pride at eight years old. We moved to San Francisco, and it’s kind of part of being a global citizen.
“People talk a lot about diversity and inclusion, but they don’t actually mean it. In our household, we mean that, and that’s why the entire household went to pride.”
Dwayne – who is the father of Kaavia, and also has five-year-old son Xavier, and custody of 17-year-old nephew Dahveon – wasn’t with his family because of work commitments, but took to Instagram to praise his son Zion, who had his “own cheering section” at the festival.
He wrote: “Zion had his [own] cheering section today. Wish I was there to see you smile kid! … It’s a family thing. (sic)”
Zion identifies as gay, and the family took the trip to the Pride Parade to support him in his first LGBT event.
Meanwhile, Dwayne recently praised the ‘Being Mary Jane’ star for being the best stepmother to his brood.
He wrote on social media: “She’s a star in her most important role. I wanna acknowledge my wife and the kids step mom for being everything that each boy and i have needed her to be. We couldn’t have wished for more @gabunion … Thank you for loving us! (sic)”

Gabrielle Union Honors ‘Black Panther’ Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter

On Saturday night, the newly launched Black Design Collective (which aims to remove inequality in the fashion industry with resources such as mentorship and an e-commerce platform) officially set its plans in motion with a fete that presented its first scholarship and honored costume designer Ruth E. Carter for her work on “Black Panther.”
Among those who flocked to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles to help founders Angela Dean, Kevan Hall and TJ Walker celebrate the Carter’s breadth of work (which includes more than 50 films in a 30-year timespan) were actresses Loretta Devine, Gabrielle Union, Malinda Williams, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, models Roshumba Williams and Beverly Johnson, celebrity stylist Elizabeth Stewart, as well as designer Tina Knowles-Lawson.
Taking the stage in a sparkling magenta suit by African-American designer Christopher John Rogers, Union, who worked with Carter on the TV series “Being Mary Jane,” noted, “Every fitting I’ve ever had with Ruth was in her home. She welcomes us in. She makes us feel protected. She literally gives us wings so we can all fly. Who really is doing that? She made Mary Jane a fashion icon. That wasn’t me, Mary Jane would have been in some basketball

Tracee Ellis Ross, Gabrielle Union & Tessa Thompson Among Actors Protesting Controversial Georgia Abortion Bill

Forces in Hollywood are fighting back with economic power to protest a controversial abortion bill which recently passed in Georgia’s legislature on Friday.

The “fetal heartbeat bill” or formally, the “Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act” (HB 481) would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can take place as early as weeks 20 into pregnancy, according to the Associated Press.

The measure passed the by 92 votes, just one vote more than the majority threshold needed to pass out of the 180-member House, the AP reports.

It is one of the most restrictive abortion bills to pass and is expected to be signed into law by the state’s newly elected Governor, Brian Kemp. As you may recall, Kemp ran against Stacey Abrams in a contentious gubernatorial race last fall.

The bill is a direct departure from the state’s current abortion policy, which allows women to undergo an abortion up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The only exception is for victims of incest and rape, who would still be allowed to undergo an abortion up to 20 weeks, if a formal police report can be produced, and or to save the life of the mother.

Abortion rights activists also signal to a larger fear that the bill could trigger a Supreme Court hearing to overlook federal protections for abortions, most notably Roe vs. Wade, the landmark legislation which established a woman’s right to a legal abortion.

After news spread of the bill passing the vote, Abrams tweeted the following:

“With one horrible exception, Georgia didn’t jeopardize stability, opportunity and leadership for dangerous legislation that treats the lives of women as political pawns.”

“I’ve spoken to Republicans and business leaders (not necessarily the same thing) in the last few days who dismiss the harm of #HB481 as overwrought or, more simply, irrelevant. Because women’s healthcare isn’t their concern. Besides, they say, the courts will stop it,” Abrams wrote.

The legislation created a strong sense of concern among Hollywood’s top movers and shakers, who are threatening to pull production processes in Georgia, a state which has serve as a filming hub for multiple blockbuster movies and shows. Georgia is now the third largest production center behind California and New York.

According to Kemp who shared numbers an event last month, the film industry employs 200,000 Georgians and brings in more than $ 60 billion of economic revenue for the state, CBS News reports.

A memo by the Writer’s Guild Association, petitioned by actress Alyssa Milano, includes a group of over 100 actors who signed their names in protest if Governor Kemp signs the bill into law. Among them were several actors and actresses of color including Uzo Udobo, Tracee Elliss Ross, Gabrielle Union, Rashida Jones, Zoe Kravitz and Don Cheadle.

Milano tweeted a full list of all the actors and Hollywood personas who are against the bill.

The state also faces a legal battle from the ACLU of Georgia, who have promised to challenge the bill in court and challenges from reputable medical associations including the  Medical Association of Georgia and the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians.

Mississippi and Kentucky have recently signed similar legislation into law, though they have struggled with ways successfully implement it. And lawmakers in Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina and Ohio have eyed similar legislation to bring to the table.

The bill will undoubtedly have devastating effects on Black women and women from undeserved communities. The infant mortality death rate in Georgia is one of the highest in the nation, a health crisis which routinely affects the lives of Black women who continue to die due to insufficient medical attention during and after their pregnancies.

Gabrielle Union Doesn’t Want To Be Called A “Basketball Wife”

Gabrielle Union isn’t fond of the “basketball wife” title one bit and urges fans and followers to never use that term. Reportedly, Gabrielle is working hard to expose “unconscious bias” against women who have married professional athletes.

Currently, Union is married to the NBA player, Dwayne Wade, but during a new interview, the Bad Boys alum admitted she refused to be described as a “basketball wife.” She considers the term innately sexist and as a pejorative.

Gabrielle claims the truth is, Dwayne, is a “Hollywood husband” rather than she being a “basketball wife.” Speaking with InStyle Magazine, Union spoke at length about sexism and the struggles women face in Hollywood and the entertainment industry.

Union asked why there are only terms to describe stereotypes against women and not men. She said, “there are no stereotypes or terms for men who are married to successful women.”

According to Union, she has been successful on multiple fronts for years, including on the big screen, with her fashion collection, as well as her own wine. Her memoir sold very well as well. Gabrielle said she was already fully secure before even starting her relationship with Dwayne.

Speaking with InStyle, Gabrielle said the idea that one person completes another is “BS.” An individual has to get their own first and then find the person who is good for them afterward.

Just last year, Gabrielle and Dwayne welcomed a baby girl in the world via a surrogate. The actress said she was so happy to finally have a child. Despite being “sleepless,” as she described it, she and her husband were thrilled to have their first baby girl.

In 2017, Gabrielle wrote a book called, We’re Going To Need More Wine, in which she revealed she had suffered more than eight miscarriages in her life. Union, 46, and Dwayne, 37, got married back in 2014. As Gabrielle’s fans have come to know, she has spoken honestly about her struggles as a woman, including when she was raped at knife-point as a young girl before achieving Hollywood fame.

Gabrielle Union To Replace Mel B On ‘America’s Got Talent’

Get ready for a big shake up on America’s Got Talent next season as Mel B and Heidi Klum have both dropped from the judging panel.

The Spice Girl has been a judge on the show for the last six seasons but there have long been whispers that she wouldn’t be invited back for the 14th season because her headline-making personal problems and marital issues are huge distractions.

Instead, Variety reports that their chairs will be filled by dancer Julianne Hough and actress Gabrielle Union who will join regulars Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel.

Hosting duties will also be changing as Tyra Banks is being replaced by actor Terry Crews, who has been hosting America’s Got Talent: The Champions.

“One of the many secrets to the success and longevity of America’s Got Talent is its fearless drive to reinvent itself,” said Meredith Ahr, president of the alternative and reality group at NBC Entertainment.

“The next evolution of the format brings in fresh expert eyes to join Simon and Howie on the panel. Gabrielle and Julianne are two of the most aspirational women in the business, on top of being electric entertainers with talent across disciplines.

“I am excited to see how their knowledge, compassion and sheer joy enhance the experience for acts and viewers alike. As their partner in crime, host Terry Crews will continue to light up the stage with his quick wit and unending charm.”

Hough is a two-time professional dance champion on Dancing with the Stars and has been a judge on series.

Union will next star in and exec produce the Bad Boys spinoff series L.A.’s Finest – which premieres May 13 on Spectrum Originals network.

Oprah At Home With Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade And Their New Baby Kaavia James

Gabrielle Union has been sharing the joys of new motherhood on social media and her fans are here for every moment of it.

The actress wants to be sure y’all aren’t out here butchering her daughter’s name, so she took to Instagram on Sunday to clear up one thing about baby Kaavia James — how to correctly pronounce her name.

“Just greazzzy and happy. That is all,” she beamed in a photo of her and her baby. “@KaaviaJames pronounced Kah-Vee-Uh James.”

Kaavia was born earlier this month via surrogate and has her own social media account with over 147,000 followers.

Instagram Photo

“We wanted to include my family in her name so the ‘James’ is from my uncle James Francis Glass who is also my godfather,” she added. “Union is her middle name. I’ve waited this long so fo sho I was gonna get in there.”

Union and her NBA star hubby Dwayne Wade introduced Kaavia to media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who interviewed the couple at their Los Angeles home for an episode of her show on OWN Network.

Gabby posted an image of them together on Instagram, along with the caption:

“From the Bottle to the Bassinet… No New Friends. Crew. Tight… So excited to share what we have been working on with @oprah & @kaaviajames ..Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby”

Oprah’s show airs December 8 at 8PM ET/PT on OWN Network.

Wait…What? Gabrielle Union And Dwyane Welcome Baby Girl…With Surrogate!

Despite her frequent appearances on social media, Gabrielle Union was able to keep something private. She and her husband Dwyane Wade – who missed a game recently due to “personal reasons”  have welcomed a baby girl via surrogate. Union announced it via Instagram today, taking most people by surprise.

Union has been open about her fertility struggles, talking to Dr. Oz earlier this year about her challenges getting pregnant. She has been the stepmother to her husband’s two sons, Zaire and Zion, and his nephew, Dahveon, that they are raising.

Wade also has a son, Xavier, with Aja Netoyer, which was first deemed a “break baby” while the two were separated but was later discovered to be a child he had while they were still dating. Despite that, the two married after his son was born.

Union also wrote about infertility in her book We’re Going To Need More Wine.

While most of the feedback to the surprise (to everyone else) birth, some were quick to criticize Gabby and Dwyane being in the hospital bed cuddling their newborn. Fortunately not everyone on social media is ill-informed and explained why the couple was positioned that way. (Although, it is THEIR baby!)

Now that that’s cleared up, congrats to the couple. No name has been announced as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
