Who Gets to Decide Who Is an Authority on Food?

Over the last couple of years, with the releases of films such as Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and Wonder Woman–movies led by women and people of color–there has been an outcry in the entertainment industry to diversify not just the crew and leadership behind the camera, but the critics’ pool as well. There are a number of arguments for this, including that the people reviewing these movies should also be reflective of the audiences for whom they were intended.

Such a call for diversifying the critics’ circle is happening in the food industry as well. Historically, just like in entertainment, it’s impossible to deny that the majority of food critics have come from similar backgrounds–notably white, male, and upper middle class. That monoculture has had both indented and unintended consequences, but they usually result in the tokenism and exoticism of certain dishes, ingredients, and the communities these cuisines represent.

This topic–evaluating who is qualified to cook, write, and review food–was an overarching topic at last weekend’s Cherry Bombe Jubilee, a day-long summit hosted by the bi-annual magazine and weekly podcast of the same name. In its sixth year, Cherry Bombe Jubilee is the largest female-food conference nationwide.

On the cusp of publishing her first cookbook with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt later this month, New York Times and Bon Appetit contributor Priya Krishna outlined the circuitous route in finding her writing voice and specialty.

“In our field, the question of who gets to be an authority comes up a lot,” Krishna said. “I feel like it when I read about a tea company founded by a woman who claims to have invented chai.”

Krishna explained that when she was first starting out in food writing, she’d often pitch stories about “restaurant dishes, interesting people, and Indian food–because that’s what I knew.” Nevertheless, Krishna said she “didn’t want to just write about dosas.”

“I had much bigger ambitions. I felt tokenized,” Krishna said. “At times, I felt I wasn’t good enough to write about other things. But I was a freelancer and needed to pay rent, and this paid the bills.”

Padma Lakshmi, who wrote the forward for Krishna’s book and also appeared on the Cherry Bombe Jubilee stage later in the day, reiterated similar feelings she expressed in her 2016 memoir Love, Loss, and What We Ate.

“Often in my own career, I’ve felt like the odd duck because I didn’t see people around me who looked like me,” Lakshmi said, describing later how after moving to the United States at the age of four, she observed that most Indian cultures were (mistakenly) lumped together by U.S. critics into a singular “pan-Indian” diet, regardless of the sheer diversity across the subcontinent.

Krishna admitted she was originally uneasy about the title of her book, and that she was unwilling to have the word “Indian” in the title. She was concerned it would “end up in ethnic bookstores” and wouldn’t be placed next to a cookbook from the likes of Nigella Lawson. But her publishers at disagreed, and they settled upon a final title: Indian-ish. But, as Krishna notes this book has “both paneer and pizza,” the true heart of the book might reside in the subtitle: Recipes and Antics From a Modern American Family.

Krishna also observed how her culture has become popular–if not misappropriated–in the food world over the last few years, describing how hipster coffee shops are now churning out turmeric lattes as just one prime example of drinks and dishes that have been served in India for centuries, but frankly only received attention in the United States “when white people started talking about it.”

“Publications, mostly still run by white people, often feel like they can’t publish content without being attacked for appropriation,” Krishna posited. It’s not hard to see why there has been an endless amount of cover stories about roast chicken. Krishna suggested a fix, to wild applause from the Cherry Bombe audience: Hire people from all backgrounds.

“Mastheads can’t all be people from the same background, the same part of the country,” Krishna said. The more perspectives in the kitchen and in publications, the less tokenized the food will be, she argued, and thus the more inclusive restaurants and publications will feel to their respective audiences. And that doesn’t just go for the critics themselves, but also the way they perceive the people they are covering and, often, honoring: “There should never, ever, ever–be an award called best female chef.”

Krishna also argued that, “as people of color, we’re not off the hooked.” She explained that she was pigeon-holed in her specialty because she “knew Indian food,” but that her other pitches didn’t go deep enough. So she started putting more reporting into her pitches, resulting in a myriad of different reporting assignments, including writing about the opioid crisis in Kentucky.

“I criticize white dudes about miswriting about Indian food all the time, but that doesn’t mean we’re all not prone to mistakes. We all have to do the homework,” Krishna continued.

Nevertheless, there are still plenty of others who need to do the homework. In shopping her book, Krishna said she received comments from prospective publishers and editors such as “Where is the curry?”, that there were “too many ingredients,” and even publishers remarking that they were already producing “a lot of immigrant stories” while asking for something else. Even after a panel discussion just a few weeks ago, an audience member told Krishna to “stay in her own lane.”

“This shit still happens,” Krishna said flatly.

Regardless, Krishna says she still has hope that as more women and people of color take on more roles of authority and management in the food industry, that they will also lift up others in less privileged positions.

“I hope, as women we’ll go out of our ways to make respective work environments more inclusive at all levels,” Krishna said. “Some days, I feel like these goals are really far away. But today isn’t one of those days.”

Lil Nas X’s Viral Hit Single “Old Town Road” Gets A ‘Game of Thrones’ Inspired Remix

The Ringer Drops 'Game of Thrones' Remix of "Old Town Road"

Source: Tim P. Whitby / Getty

Tired of Lil Nas X’s number one song in the country “Old Town Road” yet? Well if you are we have some bad news for you cause this song will have legs for a while. Already spawning remixes from Billy Ray Cyrus and Young Thug, The Ringer under it’s Ringer Records imprint dropped a Game of Thrones inspired version of the song.

With the mega-popular HBO original show’s final season set to premiere this Sunday (Apr.14) the song appropriately titled “Old Kingsroad” is right on time. The remix ditches Lil Nas X replacing him with Game of Throne’s zombie antagonist the Night King and replacing the lyrics with content inspired from the show like:

“Wall down, no crown. Livin’ like a Maester. Spent on a lot of money on my brand-new Kingsguard. Baby’s got a habit, Dragonglass, and Dornish textiles. Ridin’ down the Highroad with my Melisandre smoke child.”

Can’t front that’s actually pretty clever and catchy. “Old Town Road” is currently the talk of the internet and has propelled Lil Nas X to fame, broke records and even earned him a record deal. So don’t expect the song to go away no time soon cause there is more than likely more remixes down the pipeline.

So mount up on your horse or dragon and check out the new spin on viral hit “Old Kings Road” below to get yourself hyped for Game of Throne’s final season below.

Nike Gets Naomi Osaka, Adidas Moves on With Beyoncé

Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka is now playing on Team Nike — although some were looking for her to go a different direction in the ultracompetitive world of sports marketing deals.
Nike revealed its partnership with Japanese-born Osaka, the world’s number-one women’s single tennis player, on Thursday. But fans will have to wait until the Stuttgart Grand Prix, which begins April 22, to see the 21-year-old tennis player on the courts in Nike gear.
The news came as a bit of a surprise as many thought Osaka was courting a new corporate beau.
In September, after Osaka nabbed the U.S. Open title from Serena Williams, Osaka was rumored to be in talks with rival Adidas for an apparel endorsement worth an estimated 6.5 million pounds, or $ 8.5 million. She already had a deal with Adidas, but the rumored arrangement would have made the tennis star the highest-paid female athlete ever to sign with Adidas. Osaka was also seen sporting Adidas apparel as recently as January while competing in the Australian Open.
While Nike nabbed Osaka, the jilted Adidas had some blockbuster news of its own — which it chose to release the same day the Nike-Osaka tie-up was announced.

Elizabeth Waggett releases new print ‘Where The Light Gets In’

Thursday 4th April 2019 will bring New-York-based fine artist Elizabeth Waggett to artrepublic. Join us at the gallery from 6 pm – 8 pm for champagne as she reveals the eagerly anticipated launch price of her new print, ‘Where The Light Gets In’.

Where The Light Gets In

An exceptional, internationally renowned contemporary artist, originally from Manchester – Waggett’s style is becoming quite the collectors’ favourite. Her artworks are now held in many private collections in North America, Bahrain, Europe, South Africa, and the UAE. There is no doubt that her newest piece will be snapped up quickly.

As a limited edition of 30 prints, ‘Where the light gets in’ is the latest print in Elizabeth’s longhorn series and pays homage to her hometown of Manchester. This unique edition is hand finished with real 22karat rose gold leaf and has hand finished elements such as ink and graphite on archival somerset 330 gsm cotton rage.

“It’s a celebration of my home city Manchester and my new home New York. I wanted to create a piece that symbolised my time so far living in America and particularly New York as a proud Mancunian. The two powerful creates the longhorn (America) and the bee (Manchester) felt like the perfect pairing for this piece to celebrate the confusing yet magical time living in NYC, my acceptance of it and its acceptance of me.”

The first 10 of the edition will be hand embellished by the artist with 22ct gold on the night.

Internationally recognised for choosing objects which have a strong social stigma associated with them, Waggett cleverly explores these stigmas through her monochromatic working methods, centred around meticulous and analytical mark making. Through the visually pleasing addition of shimmering gold leaf, her chosen object is transformed into something that feels new and quite beautiful. Through her artistic hand, Waggett asks the viewer to question the conversation about the stigma and if its attachment to the object really needs to be there.

Rather than being described as hyperrealist or photorealist, her artworks reflect how her unique layering style can create an impact from afar that requires closer inspection. In an interview, she states: “I suppose my work is about accuracy and whether there are such things”. Perhaps her mark making is continually addressing the accuracy of our social constructs? We’ve put the question out there, what do you think?

Close up of Where the light gets in.

We look forward to seeing you at Elizabeth Waggett’s private view from 6 pm – 8 pm at the artrepublic gallery. You can book your tickets on our Eventbrite page.

Say What Now? Australian Senator Gets Egged by Teen, Punches Back [Video]

An Australian teenager egged the senator who made disgusting comments about immigration following the New Zealand mosque shooting.

via Complex:

Captured on video, Senator Fraser Anning was speaking with reporters when a teen who was recording him slapped an egg on the back of the senator’s head. The senator immediately turned around and hit the boy. A few men then held the boy on the ground for what seemed like an unnecessarily long amount of time as film crews surrounded him.

According to Australian reporter Kristy Mayr, the teenager was released from custody.

On Friday, the senator shared a statement where he blamed the shooting on Muslim immigration. “As always, leftwing politicians and the media will rush to claim that the causes of today’s shootings lie with gun laws or those who hold nationalist views, but this is all cliched nonsense,” he said. “The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place.”

The senator’s remarks were widely denounced. U.K. home secretary Sajid David accused the senator of further fueling extremism. “Australians will be utterly ashamed of this racist man,” he tweeted. “In no way does he represent our Australian friends.”

Australia’s prime minister Scott Morrison also condemned the senator’s comments: “The remarks by Senator Fraser Anning blaming the murderous attacks by a violent, rightwing, extremist terrorist in New Zealand on immigration are disgusting. Those views have no place in Australia, let alone the Australian parliament.”

After the shooting, New Zealand Attorney-General David Parker appeared to reveal that the government would ban semi-automatic weapons. However, on Saturday, he made it clear that the government hadn’t yet committed to that promise. New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern vowed to change gun laws and shared that the government would consider regulations on semi-automatics as “one of the issues,” RNZreports.

On Thursday, at least 49 people were reported dead following mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. One man was arrested and charged with murder for the attacks.

One thing’s for sure — Senator Anning was ready with that two-piece. Watch below.

Cyber Saturday—Cybersecurity Gets Googley, NSA Releases Toolkit, RSA Conference 2019

This week the cybersecurity industry’s RSA Conference (perhaps I should say the RA Conference) took place in San Francisco. It’s a mega-marketing and deal-making affair at which vendors spend lavishly to persuade potential customers that their wares can protect them, even when they can’t.

While I did not attend the potlatch, I observed the proceedings from afar. And though I don’t usually cover product debuts, at least two releases merit ink.

First, Chronicle, the cybersecurity startup incubated within Google X–Alphabet’s so-called moonshot factory, now known just as X–unveiled its flagship product, Backstory. The service is designed to keep unlimited logs of network telemetry and security-related data for corporate security staff while managing alerts and providing real-time analytics. The product incorporates learnings and technology from Chronicle’s sister company Google, known for its unparalleled, storage, indexing, and artificial intelligence capabilities.

Perhaps just as important as Backstory’s technical underpinnings is the product’s business model, which does not penalize companies for storing more information. Instead of pricing licenses based on usage, Chronicle offers licenses that are priced based on customers’ employee count. In theory, this lets Chronicle’s customers keep their security-related records in perpetuity at no extra cost–a valuable proposition for hack investigators.

When I suggested on a call with Chronicle CEO Stephen Gillett that Backstory reminded me of Google Photos or Gmail except for cybersecurity, he was quick to point out that Chronicle is a separate company from Google, despite sharing a parent in Alphabet. “Google employees can’t even get into our building,” he said. I got the sense that Gillett wants no one to believe there might be any privacy concern in working with a Google-adjacent business in an area so rich with sensitive data–a challenge that Google Cloud has had to face in marketing its services as well.

Investors needed no persuading. Their response reminded me of the reaction they tend to have when Amazon announces it is entering a new industry. Share prices of incumbents–including IBM, Rapid7, and Splunk–all dropped.

The other product debut worth mentioning was the U.S. National Security Agency’s release of Ghidra, a formerly classified toolkit for reverse-engineering malware, as an open source project. Security researchers are, generally, elated. This free software will greatly benefit digital defenders, providing a powerful new tool to parse and understand hackers’ code–even if the initial version has bugs. (Hey, no one is perfect.)

For all the sales bluster of RSA Conference, these new tools are sure to prove valuable additions to guardians’ arsenals.

THREATS

Facebook’s about-face. Mark Zuckerberg published a manifesto this week, seeking to persuade people that he has seen the light and will double down on private, secure messaging as the future of his media empire. Obviously, people have lots of questions about whether this seeming pivot is actually going to change anything.

The best defense is a good Hua-ffense. Huawei is suing the U.S. government, arguing that the government’s ban on federal agencies using the company’s equipment is unconstitutional. The extradition hearing for Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s chief financial officer, who has been detained in Canada and charged with evading U.S. sanctions on Iran, looks to be set for May 8. Meanwhile, the U.S.’s European allies are skeptical of the U.S.’s warnings that the company poses a threat to national security. In an apparent attempt to win over Europe, Huawei is opening a cybersecurity center in Brussels, the effective capital of the European Union.

Hold the phone (logs). The U.S. National Security Agency has quietly ended a controversial surveillance program that collected phone call and text records, including those of Americans, says a senior Republican congressional aide. The program had been exposed by Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor turned leaker, nearly six years ago. The agency is deliberating whether to end the program, which started under former President George W. Bush in the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks, for good, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Insecticide. A Facebook Messenger bug could have allowed spies to tell who is chatting with whom through the chat service. Google’s Project Zero hacker team found bad vulnerabilities in Apple macOS as well as actively exploited one in Microsoft Windows and Google Chrome. Google’s guidance: Update your Chrome browser, pronto! Also, some IBM interns discovered 19 vulnerabilities in corporate check-in systems.

C’mon, Equifax–do better!

ACCESS GRANTED

Satanic pitchfork. A year and a half ago, hackers burrowed deep inside the Petro Rabigh petrochemical and refinery complex in Saudi Arabia, a joint venture between the world’s biggest oil company, Saudi Aramco, and Tokyo’s Sumitomo Chemical. They gained entry through a poorly configured firewall, and then they planted dangerous–potentially deadly–malicious software across the plant’s systems. Investigators eventually discovered the intruders’ malware, which they dubbed “Triton.” In an excellent feature, Energy & Environment News bills the finding, not hyperbolically, as “the world’s most dangerous malware.”

On Aug. 4, 2017, at 7:43 p.m., two emergency shutdown systems sprang into action as darkness settled over the sprawling refinery along Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast.

The systems brought part of the Petro Rabigh complex offline in a last-gasp effort to prevent a gas release and deadly explosion. But as safety devices took extraordinary steps, control room engineers working the weekend shift spotted nothing out of the ordinary, either on their computer screens or out on the plant floor.

The reasons for the sudden shutdown were still buried under zeros and ones, nestled deep within the code of the compromised Schneider Electric safety equipment.

ONE MORE THING

Pick your poison. It seems like everyone nowadays is recommending that consumers adopt a VPN, or virtual private network: an Internet traffic-encrypting tool ostensibly designed to enhance people’s security and privacy on the web. So choosing one should be a simple matter, right? Not quite. As Will Oremus learned while reporting this Slate article, picking a VPN is a complicated matter. Performance, data privacy, transparency–no one option seems to have it all.

Tichina Arnold Gets Dragged For Insinuating That Black Folks Shouldn’t Turn Their Backs On Black Men Like R. Kelly

2016 ESSENCE Festival Presented By Coca-Cola Ernest N. Morial Convention Center - Day 2

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty

Another day, another one of our favorite “aunties” having a hard time holding famous Black men like R. Kelly accountable.

Last time it was Taraji P. Henson and Erykah Badu and now it’s Tichina Arnold’s turn to get dragged.

See on Thursday morning, the “Martin” actress got some serious side-eye for suggesting that it’s important for Black people to uphold one another up, regardless of their guilt or actions.

“*Its disturbing to watch black ppl pounce on other black ppl when they are already down..guilty or not, but when it comes to holding others races accountable for their horrific actions, I hear crickets,” the actress and singer wrote on Twitter.

“Check yourself before you wreck yourself. Operate through love & compassion.”

While she never mentioned the Pied Piper by name, it can be assumed given all the media coverage he’s received lately along with his 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse involving three minors, that the actress is talking about him.

Whatever the case, this way of thinking is what’s truly “disturbing.” Miss me with this love, intention and honestly when you have none for his victims and their families. Most importantly, it’s hard to forgive and want healing for men who refuse to admit their guilt and continue to act a damn fool in public.

Honestly, it’s heartbreaking to continue to watch Black folks, especially Black women, continue to push this narrative that holding a Black man that harms Black women and girls accountable is somehow anti-Black. It’s manipulative, harmful and counterproductive.

So is this idea that until we persecute white men like Harvey Weinstein or institutions like the Catholic Church first (which has already been done), we shouldn’t focus so much on the predators within our community.

This exact thinking, this protect “Black men by any means of necessary” mantra, is what continues to perpetuate rape culture in Black America and helps cover and protect predators. It also send the message to Black women and girls that their lives and bodies don’t matter, especially if their abusers are Black men.

Enough is enough!

Thankfully, I’m alone on this one. Black Twitter clapped back and had some choice words for Ms. Pam.

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Gets Charges Dropped Against Student Who Wouldn’t Stand For Pledge Of Allegiance

Roc Nation is doing major things.

The philanthropic arm of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label rallied behind Jabari Talbot, the sixth grade boy who was arrested last month after he refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance at his school in Lakeland, Florida. The student got into an exchange with a substitute teacher and according to Bay Area News 9, Talbot explained he would not take part in the pledge because “the flag was racist and the national anthem was offensive to black people.”

When the sub asked why wouldn’t he simply leave the country if he hated it so much, Talbot reportedly told her, “They brought me here.”

“Well you can always go back because I came here from Cuba,” she told him, “and the day I feel I’m not welcome here any more I would find another place to live.

Talbot was arrested shortly after the exchange by a school resource officer who claims the young man was being disruptive and refused to obey commands. According to an arrest affidavit, Jabari also threatened the sub with physical violence and told the principal and arresting officer that he’d get them fired.

The child’s arrest made national news and caught the attention of Team Roc, the Roc Nation division who is dedicated to assisting victims of perceived racial justice. They’ve worked on a number of cases from the “hoodie arrests” in Tennessee, 21 Savage’s legal battle against ICE and more.

Alex Spiro, the man Team Roc lended to support 21 Savage’s case, worked Talbot’s case pro bono and through he and Team Roc’s hard work, the case was dismissed.

“Jabari is a courageous and intelligent young man who deserves all the credit for standing up for his beliefs,” Spiro said in a statement. “He should’ve never been arrested or entangled in this situation—his freedom of speech rights were clearly protected under the 1st Amendment.”

His mother, Dhakira Talbot thanked Roc Nation and Team Roc for their efforts.

“My son and I are grateful for all the athletes, entertainers, Roc Nation and community of supporters that have raised awareness about this injustice and showed their support—both publicly and privately […]” she said. “Although Jabari’s case has been dismissed, I do want people to know this isn’t just about my son—this prejudice happens to African-American kids all across the country. The fight isn’t over, which is why I have a civil rights complaint pending with the U.S. Department of Education. At the end of the day, I want to ensure that no child ever has to experience this injustice again and we will appreciate everyone’s continued support.”

Offset Says That Hip-Hop Heads Should Be Kissing The Migos’ Feet For Bringing Hip-Hop Mainstream — Gets Bashed By Lupe Fiasco!

Offset is making his rounds to promote his new album ‘Father of Four.’ After catching the attention of his baby mama for a comment made about the paternity of his daughter, the 27-year-old is ticking off some of the veterans of popular rap with his latest interview.

Offset chatted with Ebro of ‘Ebro in the Morning’ on Hot 97 about the hate that younger artists receive from the older generation. Although some of the most popular rap songs seem to be a poppin’ beat masking misogynistic and drug-filled references, the genre is the number one type of music listened to in this new age.

If you ask Offset, instead of hating, the hip-hop heads need to be thanking the new wave rappers for making it so mainstream.

“If you’re an older artist, you should be thanking us, kissing our feet. Not just the Migos… Hip-hop has never been the No. 1 genre ever. Right now when you go to Spotify, you’re not seeing the other genres [like] pop, country.”

View this post on Instagram

The disconnect…The Reconnect. Firstly let me say that I’m a huge fan of the Migos (specifically Emitt Smith & Fight Night. Also when I go to the club I only really get up and dance dance my little dance to Migos. True story) Secondly let me say that the only visceral problem with brother offsets statement is the use of the cliche “kissing feet”. That’s not a sign of respect that’s an act of subjugation of something lower to something higher and as Busta Rhymes told me when it comes to rap there are no classes, or superiors vs inferiors. We are all a team. Each with individual attributes that add their special skill set and energy to the whole. The metrics of industry don’t successfully define the essence of hiphop nor do they replace its legacy or the efforts of its pioneers who achieved great things with little to nothing in terms of materials (i.e. the internet and massive marketing budgets) and from that poverty of capital created a Culture, not a business, a legitimate Culture and were actively combatted by opposing forces from all walks of life. Streaming and selling records is only a part of the project that is hip hop. It’s a great feeling and milestone to sell a million records and be celebrated for that achievement. But it is just as great to be an amazing lyricist respected by thousands or just 1 for your abilities to craft amazing pieces of communication that can operate to influence society as a whole not just exclusively on a dance floor. Hip hop got its RESPECT from rappers who spoke truth to power and struck fear in the comfort zones of oppression and inspired folks to take a look at their surroundings, analyze and OVERCOME. Hip Hop isn’t respected because of how many records it has sold or how many dances it has created UNLESS WE TALM BOUT BREAKDANCING. Hip Hop is respected because it’s kisses nobodies feet. And never will. Our feet don’t belong on the mouths of our pioneers they belong on their shoulders. . . . The true rapper is the one who continues to do it when it’s no money, no fame, no cars, no jewelry…just the love of the craft that keeps them on that grind. That’s the bar. Everything else other than that is just filler and cap.

A post shared by Lupe Fiasco (@lupefiasco) on

The ‘Taste’ musician added: “Because of how streams is, people are listening to hip-hop more than any other time. So you should salute us, we made this bigger than it ever was. You fought for it, you set the tone, your style is just different.”

The problem that hip-hop veterans have with today’s popular songs is that you don’t necessarily have to have talent in order to have a successful career. With the right trendy look and a producer who can make a trap beat — almost anyone can be a rapper.

Additionally, many feel that the songs don’t have meaning the way that they used to. Lyricism is not as appreciated as it once was.

Lupe Fiasco shared his opinion on Offset’s recent remarks via Instagram in a lengthy caption that read, in part: “The metrics of industry don’t successfully define the essence of hip-hop nor do they replace its legacy or the efforts of its pioneers who achieved great things with little to nothing in terms of materials (i.e. the internet and massive marketing budgets) and from that poverty of capital created a Culture, not a business, a legitimate Culture and were actively combatted by opposing forces from all walks of life. Streaming and selling records is only a part of the project that is hip hop. It’s a great feeling and milestone to sell a million records and be celebrated for that achievement.”

What do you think about what Offset said? Is he being cocky or does he have a point?

All White adidas Sneaker From Black History Month Collection Gets Shelved

ADIDAS UltraBOOST Uncaged BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Source: ADIDAS / adidas

Obviously someone at adidas wasn’t wearing their thinking cap when curating a nod to African Americans. To many, A pair of mayonnaise flavored shoes were insensitive to say the least.

As per Hypebeast the sporting goods manufacturer definitely took a cultural loss when it came to their Black History Month collection. Included in the drop was a UltraBOOST model which in theory would make sense given it is one of their most popular sellers. Problem was it was an all white silhouette AND was named “UNCAGED”. Naturally the move got a huge side eye from sneaker enthusiasts and anybody with a bit of common sense alike.

Considering the set were made in the spirit of “Celebrating Black Culture” adidas released a formal statement apologizing for the huge faux pas.

“Adidas released a new collection in celebration of Black History Month featuring designs inspired by the Harlem Renaissance. It includes footwear and apparel across a variety of categories. Toward the latter stages of the design process, we added a running shoe to the collection that we later felt did not reflect the spirit or philosophy of how adidas believes we should recognize and honor Black History Month. After careful consideration, we have decided to withdraw the product from the collection.”

The sneaker has since been pulled. Other feet pieces included in the collection include re-invisioned versions of the Dame 5, Harden Vol. 3 and a Harlem inspired UltraBOOST. The adidas Black History Month went on sale starting February 5 here.

A woman’s inner circle is how she gets ahead, study says

TwitterFacebook

The female-only networks that women use to share job openings, pass on interview tips, or even just complain about that time their boss interrupted them in a meeting are integral to their success.

That’s what new research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences from the University of Notre Dame and Northwestern says, proving that yes, that female-only group email chain is, in fact, vitally important.

Researchers studied social networks and their role in job placement by looking at email messages sent by over 700 graduates of a U.S. business school who were placed in varying levels of leadership positions. According to the Notre Dame press site, the researchers then compared the networks’ size or “centrality,” gender composition, and connection strength. Read more…

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Gets a Much-Needed Fresh Start

BOOM! Studios is taking a fairly risky approach to its first Buffy comic. Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 isn’t a continuation of the long-running sequel saga Dark Horse published from 2007 through 2018. Nor is it a tie-in to the original TV series. It’s instead a complete reboot that overhauls the Buffy mythos for 2019. While that approach threatens to alienate long-time Buffy fans, the new series actually strikes a very delicate balance. It retains the spirit of the old Buffy while also giving newbies an easy jumping-on point to the franchise.

It helps that there’s nothing radically different about this rebooted Buffy. Writer Jordie Bellaire and artist Dan Mora aren’t attempting to reinvent the Slayer wheel here. Even describing the new series as “Ultimate Buffy” overstates the differences. This is still the story of Buffy Summers moving to Sunnydale and trying to balance the pressures of high school with her vampire-hunting responsibilities. The characters all still closely resemble their respective actors. This first issue makes it clear that the new series will follow its own path in terms of plotting and the order in which certain major characters are introduced, but also that it won’t be making changes simply for the sake of change.

Change in the Old South: Gwinnett County Gets First Black Woman Democratic Party Chair

The South will rise again—but this time in a definite shade of blue rather than Confederate grey. At least that is the goal of newly-elected Democrats in Georgia. The midterm election was an exclamation point, underscoring a process of change that has been quietly underway for some time. Nationally, eyes are on Georgia, particularly Gwinnett County and the first black woman to chair the county’s Democratic party.

With a Bachelor of Political Science from Spelman College, Bianca Keaton has earned her spot at the political table. Upon graduation, she went to Washington, D.C., and served as an aide and adviser to U.S. Congressmen Robert Brady and Cedric Richmond for a combined six years. Keaton is well-versed in legislative policy, administration, and strategic planning. Her most recent political position before being voted in as Gwinnett County Democratic Chair has been assistant to Cobb County Commissioner Lisa Cupid where she served for nearly three years.

Keaton’s position is significant for a number of reasons. Gwinnett County has been a Republican stronghold for at least the last 30 years. It’s the second-most populous county in Georgia, and prior to 2016, had not voted for a Democrat since Jimmy Carter.

However, this all began to change in 2016, when Hillary Clinton won a majority of the county’s votes. Last year, two Democrats were elected to the County Commission and the county’s legislative delegation in the state capitol shifted from being majority Republican to majority Democratic.

Gwinnett County is located in the northeast quadrant of the greater Atlanta area. With population just shy of 1 million people, it is often hailed as one of the most diverse counties in the southeast.

The most common foreign languages in Gwinnett County are Spanish (144,073 speakers), Korean (19,938 speakers), and Vietnamese (15,614 speakers), compared to other places, Gwinnett has a relatively high number of Korean (19,938 speakers), Serbo-Croatian (3,767 speakers), and Gujarati (4,802 speakers). – DataUSA.com

However, this diversity was not reflected in the county’s political leadership — prior to 2018, the  Gwinnett County Commission was all white and all Republican. Keaton, at 35-years-old, is set to play a critical role as the county’s political shift.

Change is not a scary word to Keaton. Growing up in Chicago, she struggled against poverty and uncertainty on a daily basis. She once went to 10 different schools in one year. Now, she is on a path to move Gwinnett from red to completely blue by the time of the 2020 elections.

Some of the key issues she is focused on include:

  • Fair elections – It’s no secret Gwinnett County had issues on election night with their precincts and ballot access. These issues could have been avoided with better planning and oversight. Absentee Ballots were thrown out and not enough voting machines were made available for the high voter turnout. This is a priority to fix for Keaton.

  • Making room for new voices and creating an expanded Democratic footprint throughout Gwinnett – At one time, the Democratic Party in Gwinnett was all but defunct. Keaton and her executive team are taking the reins and moving things forward, especially for groups that have been historically marginalized in the county.

  • Modernized operations – Keaton says it’s time to bring party operations into the 21st century. She has a clear idea on how she wants to achieve this. It’s more than just building a new website she says–it’s about brand and messaging as well as policy and procedures. She embraces technology and wants to utilize it to streamline the functions and work of the party.

Why ‘On the Basis of Sex’ Gets 2.5 Stars

2.5 stars (out of 4)

The timing couldn’t be better for a superheroine origin story on Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. At 85 years old, she’s the glass ceiling-shattering figure of hope who has bipartisan respect and pop-culture hipster appeal. She’s the Notorious RBG, for crying out loud! But while On the Basis of Sex makes for a warm companion piece to the hit documentary RBG, the formulaic film doesn’t carry enough heft for consideration as a must-see Oscar contender.

A wildly miscast lead — two, in fact — almost brings the proceedings to a halt at the outset. For the role of Brooklyn-born-and-raised Ginsburg, we have bright-eyed Brit Felicity Jones. Both women are both petite with dark hair, and that’s where the similarities end. In 1956, a time when dutiful wives were supposed stay in the kitchen, young Ruth is one of only 9 women attending Harvard Law School. As if her studies weren’t demanding enough, she must care for her husband, Marty (Armie Hammer), after he’s diagnosed with testicular cancer. They also have a young daughter named Jane. A baby boy arrives a few years later. Old-timey values be damned; Ginsburg is the breadwinner and rock of her household.

Felicity Jones stars as Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Mimi Leder's ON THE BASIS OF SEX.
Felicity Jones stars as Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Mimi Leder’s ON THE BASIS OF SEX. Focus Features

Ruth is undeterred. She’s the well-prepared student who always knows the answer in the class, glaring at male professors that won’t call on her. When the law school dean (Sam Waterston) invites all the female students over his house for dinner, he instructs them all to introduce themselves and list the reason why they’re worthy of a slot in the program instead of a worthier man. Ruth snaps at him in a moment that seems fictionalized until you Google it later and realize this actually happened, sigh.

Despite graduating at the top of her class, Ruth struggles to find work in New York City just because of her gender. She finally lands a job as a college law professor teaching about gender laws, and as the film jumps to the early 1970s, she’s frustrated that she’s not fighting for her rights on the front lines of the court. Then Marty — a successful tax lawyer in his own right — comes across a case of gender bias case against a man. She jumps at the chance to probe deeper and expose all the outdated laws that discriminate on the basis of sex.

The second half of the film focuses on this specific case, which concerns the taxation of a bachelor caring for his elderly mother. And though it’s treated with the urgency of a first-degree murder case, the material is dry. Of all Ginsburg’s early accomplishments, I’m surprised that screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman — who happens to be her nephew — decided to devote so much time to the case of the Colorado male caregiver. In RBG, for example, the directors focused more of their energies on Ginsburg first arguing in front the very court she would preside over decades later.

The blessing and the curse of examining the life of an 85-year-old is that there’s just too much ground to cover. Stiepleman only touches on Ginsburg’s domestic squabbles with her teenage daughter, who skips school to go to a Gloria Steinem rally. It’s a fascinating generational dilemma that just hangs there until the end credits. We also get a brief-but-tantalizing glimpses at the indignities that women still must face on a daily basis: Cabs won’t stop for them; men whistle at them; male superiors scarcely respect them.

The bigger WTF moments are inserted in the narrative to provoke an audience reaction, including the monologue-heavy climax. Everything from the by-the-numbers character arc to the swelling musical score is strictly Biopic 101. Director Mimi Leder comes from a TV background — she won an Emmy in the mid-1990s for helming a classic, heartbreaking early episode of ER — and she paces her film with a constricted small-screen sensibility. It all feels too familiar.

But the biggest problem of all, your honors, is the lead. Though Jones is a fine, Oscar-nominated actress, she’s just not right for this role. She struggles with the distinctive Brooklyn accent and never commands the screen. Her Ginsburg is an unsure, frustrated woman that drops silverware, fumbles a microphone in court and meekly surrenders to authority figures. (Justin Theroux, playing an alleged ally at the ACLU, constantly embarrasses her and instructs her to smile more.) The suave Hammer looks like he stepped out of the pages of GQ in an underwritten part.

Ginsburg’s legacy will endure. She’s resilient and brilliant and nobody would ever argue why she matters. The same can’t be said of On the Basis of Sex. Leder underlines this as Ruth Bader Ginsburg herself walks up the court steps in an exclamation point of a closing shot. Indeed, no clichéd drama can match the real deal.

On the Basis of Sex, now playing in select theaters, opens everywhere on Friday, January 11

Acer’s monster Triton 900 laptop gets a monster price

TwitterFacebook

In late August last year, at the IFA trade show in Berlin, Acer showed me a pretty insane gaming laptop, with a hinge that enables you to angle its screen or even turn it away from you.

Back then, the Triton 900 was behind a glass and not all of its specs were known, but now, at the CES show in Las Vegas, Acer has revealed all the details, including the (hefty) price.

The general idea hasn’t changed. The Triton 900 has a CNC-machined hinge that lets you move the device’s 17.3-inch touchscreen more freely than you’d be able on a conventional laptop. Acer mentions four basic modes of operation: traditional notebook mode, Stand mode which turns the Triton 900 into a tablet of sorts, Display mode which shares the screen with others, and Ezel mode for playing games on the touch screen. Note the trackpad, which is placed next to the keyboard; this, Acer claims, should provide a more natural hand placement during gaming sessions. The entire thing is, surprisingly, quite thin at 0.94 inches.  Read more…

Robert Mueller Grand Jury Gets More Time to Consider Evidence, Issue Indictments

Robert Mueller’s grand jury in Washington, D.C., has received an extension of up to six months from the head judge of the D.C. district court to consider evidence and bring indictments. The grand jury was empaneled on July 6, 2017, and would have expired on Sunday without the extension.

Special Counsel Mueller, appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate whether and how Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election, has indicted 33 people and three companies since his work began. He’s secured several convictions and guilty pleas, and some parties have already been sentenced or have completed their sentences. President Donald Trump consistently downplays the investigation, labeling it a “witch hunt,” and denying any “collusion” occurred between his campaign and Russian representatives.

Mueller’s indictments, accepted pleas, and convictions include:

Although other indictments have also been issued, it’s unclear how much work remains for the grand jury to sift through. But the judge’s action indicates that it’s not yet finished.

The special assistant to Chief Judge Beryl Howell confirmed to several media outlets, including The Hill, that a grand-jury extension past the original 18-month period had been granted, but denied a CNN report that the period was six months. Six months is the longest the judge can extend the special counsel’s grand jury.

A prosecutor presents evidence and examines witnesses before a grand jury, the deliberations of which must be kept secret by the participants, though those testifying may reveal their participation. The members of the grand jury can then vote whether an indictment should be issued. A prosecutor can bring charges even if the grand jury doesn’t agree, or can choose not to pursue an indictment a grand jury agrees on.

Basketball Dad Gets an Assist From Mechanical Heart Pump

Keith Childs’ condition was touch and go when he first met Barbara Amos, RN.

“He was probably about a month away from the end of his life, in a chair in the ICU attached to multiple pumps,” said the clinical nurse specialist, who manages the Ventricular Assist Device Program for Kaiser Permanente in Oregon and Southern Washington.

Childs had heart failure, a condition in which the heart is too weak to pump enough blood and oxygen to the organs.

“It felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest,” he recalled.

Beating the odds

Some 5.7 million adults in the U.S. have heart failure. Half will die within 5 years of diagnosis.

The ventricular assist device, or “VAD,” is a promising treatment. The mechanical pump is implanted in the heart to help the left chamber pump blood.

“It gives a second chance to patients who have a heart that’s just too weak to sustain life,” said Yong Shin, MD, chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Kaiser Permanente in the Northwest.

While the ventricular assist device has been shown to improve survival and quality of life, VAD therapy is complex and high-risk. Kaiser Permanente launched its program with a team-based approach and detailed care plans designed to improve patient outcomes.

The results have been impressive.

“For the past 4 years, we’ve not had a death within 12 months of VAD implant,” said Timothy Jacobson, MD, chief of Cardiology. “Current mortality rates (at other medical centers) are 10, 15 or even 20 percent.”

Nearly 4 years after receiving his VAD, Keith Childs is “healthy, fabulous, raising his kids, being a basketball dad and working,” said Amos.

“They saved my life,” said Childs. “My kids are very grateful.”

Tesla releases a video showing us how a Model 3 gets made

Model 3

The Model 3 has long been the linchpin in Tesla’s plan to bring electric cars to the masses. Hardly a point of speculation, Elon Musk said this himself in Tesla’s now somewhat famous “Master Plan” all the way back in 2006. If you recall, Musk at the time explained that Tesla’s overarching strategy was to take profits from pricier models (i.e the Roadster and the Model S) in order to bankroll an “even more affordable car.”

That affordable car, as we’d find out about 10 years later, was the Model 3. And while the $ 35,000 option for the Model 3 isn’t available just yet, demand for Tesla’s mass market EV remains incredibly strong. In fact, the Model 3 is largely responsible for Tesla actually managing to turn a quarterly profit earlier this year.

Driver Who Delivers Organs Gets New Kidney He’s Spent More Than A Decade Waiting For

Joe Tinker spent more than 12 years on dialysis with a failing kidney until the organ delivery driver got a transplant himself in August.

Fox 5 reports the D.C. man had been rejected for a kidney transplant in the past. Two years ago Tinker began working as a delivery driver for a company which coordinates deliveries of organs to transplant patients who need them.

Tinker’s doctors reportedly say advancements in medical procedures for organs from donors infected with hepatitis C allowed Tinker to receive a kidney faster than if he had kept waiting for a kidney without the infection.

“I didn’t want to sit in the house waiting to die,” said Tinker.

In August, Tinker got the transplant and his prognosis is good, according to Dr. Jennifer Verbesey, who specializes in transplants at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

“Hepatitis C organs used to be thrown out and now we know that we can use them for hepatitis C-positive patients, which is great,” said Dr. Verbesey. “His prognosis is great. His kidney is working very well and his hepatitis C is undetectable at this point and I expect him to have this kidney for many, many years.”

Tinker says, now that he’s benefited from the donation process, he plans to continue picking up and delivering organs for transplant.

Dr. Verbesey and her team believe they will soon be able to transplant hepatitis C-positive organs to negative recipients and treat them to cure the hepatitis C. That would allow doctors to expand the donor pool even further.

Making a Murderer

Amidst a seeming avalanche of new content that can at times feel overwhelming, Making a Murderer unquestionably remains one of the most riveting and addicting series to ever air on Netflix. The true-crime documentary debuted in late 2015 and quickly became a runaway hit for the streaming giant.

The series essentially focuses on the trial and ultimate conviction of Steven Avery for the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach. What makes the documentary so compelling is that the murder investigation and Avery’s subsequent trial was riddled with a number of questionable actions from the likes of lawyers, police, and other investigators who helped put Avery behind bars. Now, about three years since the series debuted, one of the policemen who was cast in a particularly unflattering light is suing Netflix and the show’s producers for defamation.

Bozoma Saint John is best known for displaying her marketing chops at massive corporations including, PepsiCo, Beats, Apple, Uber, and currently Endeavor. The chief marking officer will now grace our television screens in a completely different way, showcasing her own brand with a new documentary series on Starz Network entitled, Being Badass.

It is said to be “a mix between Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Mister Rogers, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.” In a statement recently released to Fast Company, Saint John said the series’ underlying message is “to show up wholly as ourselves, especially for anyone who feels ‘other-ed’ and that you don’t have the allowance to be fully yourself.” She added, “I’ve had a lot of great feedback from different types of people who have said they appreciate that I’m able to be exactly who I am in all these spaces, even if I’m the one and only.”

This show aims to be aspirational, inspirational, and motivational, but not without its highs and lows. Topics will span across her business and personal life and will showcase her love of fashion and address the challenges of being a single, working mother, and widowed. Saint John’s husband passed away over five years ago after a battle with cancer. Saint John, who graced the cover of BLACK ENTERPRISE last year, will interview folks in similar situations to gain their perspectives.

“I don’t agree with the line that says you walk into an office and you leave yourself outside,” Saint John continued. “I hope this show inspires people to celebrate all the parts of themselves that perhaps are rough around the edges. There’s something we can learn from each other, even if we’ve been through some things that are tough, or we love things that we think are frivolous. All those things are worthy of celebration and exploration.”

In addition to sharing her bold personal stories, there is also a tech element to this: Saint John will dive into her previous positions at Uber and Apple and where she believes innovation will happen next.

The show is set to air next year but is currently in production.

Racist Who Cyber-Terrorized Black Student Gets Light Penalty

Sitting down with a therapist for “anti-hate training” was part of the gift-wrapped slap on the wrist that a racist internet troll was given for terrorizing a Black college student through a neo-Nazi website.

Evan James McCarty settled a lawsuit on Tuesday that Taylor Dumpson filed over an internet campaign to racially harass her after she became the first Black woman to serve as American University’s student government president in 2017, the Associated Press reported.

The agreement also required McCarty to apologize, do community service and publicly renounce white supremacy.

That’ll teach him, right?

“At the end of the day, our settlement should send a strong message to white supremacists and neo-Nazis all across the country that they will be held accountable for their conduct,” said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, which represented Dumpson.

Dumpson’s nightmare began when someone hung bananas marked with the letters “AKA,” a reference to the historically Black college sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, from nooses on the university’s campus. The school’s president noted in a statement that the incident occurred after Dumpson, an AKA member, was sworn in as American’s student government president.

The Daily Stormer publisher Andrew Anglin, who was also a defendant in the lawsuit, directed his readers to cyberbully Dumpson, the lawsuit alleged. In an article he posted about the incident, Anglin added links to Dumpson’s Facebook page and the American University Student Government’s Twitter page.

In at least one instance, McCarty took to Twitter and posted a picture of bananas with the caption, “Ready the troops,” replying to a message that revealed Dumpson’s whereabouts. He posted that and other tweets anonymously under the pseudonym Byron de la Vandal, which Dumpson’s legal team believed was a reference to Byron De La Beckwith, the Klansman who killed civil rights leader Medgar Evers in 1963.

It’s hard to see how therapy sessions could bring about a real change in a committed white supremacist. How is a transformation possible when programs to make people—who are not ardent racists—aware of their unconscious racism seldom work?

American companies spend an estimated $ 8 billion a year on anti-bias training, according to TIME. Yet there’s clear evidence that the efforts to change bias attitudes, which are often ingrained from childhood, is no easy task. A study of 829 companies over 31 years found that diversity training had “no positive effects in the average workplace,” especially when it’s mandatory.

Dumpson said she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder over her ordeal. The 22-year-old law school student believes the settlement “could raise awareness of issues of racial justice, while also providing for educational benefits.”

Azealia Banks Slams Offset For Cardi B Ambush And 21 Savage Supports Him During A Concert And Gets The Crowd To Sing ‘Cardi, Take Offset Back’

It was recently reported that Offset managed to embarrass Cardi even more during one of her concerts. The man showed up on stage during one of her shows to beg her once again to take him back.

People understood that he had the best intentions, but Cardi was not impressed at all, and it’s quite understandable.

After doing this, Offset posted a message on social media in which he was saying that he felt like a public apology was necessary after his cheating became a public matter as well.

This message did not impress fans at all, and they slammed him saying that he is only sorry because he got caught.

More celebrities got themselves involved in the drama and supported Cardi B or Offset. For instance, Azealia Banks also chose to speak on the recent events surrounding Cardi B, and Offset.

‘I think it’s messed up that men think it’s okay to desecrate her workspace with their opinions of what she should be doing. No clue why think it’s okay to just barge in on women when they feel like it,’ she posted on Instagram.

She continued and wrote that ‘If it were the other way around they would be bashing the woman saying she’s no good, calling her a hoe, etc. etc…but since it’s the man they expect it to be accepted as part of his hip-hop persona and everyone will rush to defend them.’

Another rapper, 21 Savage seems to be ‘team Offset’ because he got the crowd to ask Cardi to take her hubby back during a concert.

21 Savage got everyone chanting, ‘Cardi B, Take Offset Back!’

What do you think Cardi should do?

Single Mother Gets The Surprise Of A Lifetime From Her Bank [VIDEO]

Various US curency

Source: Douglas Sacha / Getty

via Bossip:

A 30-year-old nurse and single mother with $ 150,000 in student loan debt received an absolutely life-changing surprise on Wednesday.

Jasmin Ford was surprised with the news that Fifth Third Bank was going to be paying off her student loans entirely. “I still can’t find the words,” the mother said on Thursday. “I’m off work again today and I’m just sort of pacing around and restless because I know my life is going to change.”

Ford is a Chicago native and was the first in her family to graduate from college. She received her bachelor’s degree in 2011 and then became a nurse three years later after going back to school for her nursing degree. She finished her Master’s degree in nursing in 2015. With no family assistance, she said she had to take out student loans in order to cover necessities like food and rent in addition to tuition.

“I could not foresee when I’d be able to pay it off,” Ford said of her debt. “I just knew this was going to be a part of my life as long as I was alive unless there was some significant change, which — wow.” Ford said she now envisions being able to use her nursing career to give back even more and “pay it forward.”

“I just imagine being able to spend more time physically with my family, not having to hustle, having mental freedom and with that, some spiritual freedom,” she said. “I can open myself to more experiences, opportunities and just be able to sit and be with my thoughts and be able to pursue what it is I came to do.”

She also said that life will change for her son, Caleb, who is going to turn 2 in February. While struggling to pay back her debt, Ford worked nearly every day of the week at two jobs. “His life will be totally different,” she said. “I’m so happy and so proud that I’m able to offer that to him more than anything else because he deserves it.”

Jasmine Ford was surprised by Fifth Third Bank after being chosen to participate in a documentary that the Ohio-based bank was producing on the student loan debt. She didn’t know she was being awarded $ 150K for her loans, because she thought the film crew was simply coming back to her home on Wednesday to shoot some additional video.

Next year, Fifth Third Bank plans to pay off student debt for two more people. The bank will pay off loans of up to $ 39,000 for two users of Fifth Third Momentum, the bank’s student loan initiative that rounds up a customer’s debit card purchases and applies it to their student loan balance.

Salt Lake City Gets Green Light to Bid for Winter Olympics

Salt Lake City got the green light to bid for the Winter Olympics — most likely for 2030 — in an attempt to bring the Games back to the city that hosted in 2002 and provided the backdrop for the U.S. winter team’s ascendance into an international powerhouse.

The U.S. Olympic Committee said Friday it was selecting Utah’s capital, which stood out as a predictable, slam-dunk pick in a process that also included Denver and Reno, Nevada.

With venues still in place — some of them upgraded — from the 2002 Games, Salt Lake claims it can host again at a lower cost than other candidates, which aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s new blueprint for the Games.

It’s almost a certain bet the bid will be for 2030, though the USOC left open the possibility of other dates. There are only two bidders for 2026: from Sweden and Italy, after voters in Calgary, Alberta, rejected a proposed bid.

USOC CEO Sarah Hirshland said Denver and Salt Lake City both presented strong cases, but that the board determined Utah was the better choice due in part to the existing venues, their proximity to each other, the city’s experience hosting the games and widespread community and political support. She said it minimizes the risk.

“It is critical to ensure that we have the ability to create an incredible experience for athletes while at the same time managing sustainability and fiscal responsibility,” Hirshland said. “It was clear to us when we were there and in what they presented that Salt Lake City very much understands the practical realities of hosting a Games, but also wants and supports what they represent.”

The city’s selection set off celebration at the mayor’s office where local leaders who worked on the plan gathered. Since 2012, Utah has said it’s ready and willing to host another Olympics.

One key hurdle for Salt Lake City will be erasing memories of the bidding scandal that marred the buildup to 2002 and resulted in several IOC members losing their positions for taking bribes.

Mitt Romney was brought in to steer the games through the scandal. The newly elected U.S. Senator for Utah told The Associated Press after the announcement that a series of processes put in place by the IOC will ensure no bribery scandal happens again.

Romney said Salt Lake City should have a great chance at winning the bid from the IOC because it has shown it can host the games without losing money. Salt Lake City ended up with a surplus after the 2002 Games, money he used to help maintain venues it will use again if it’s awarded the Olympics.

“We learned how to produce the Games for the same cost as the revenue that came in,” Romney said. “We will not put a glitzy show like Sochi or Beijing, that are reported to have cost as much $ 50 billion. We will show the world that you can produce an Olympics without having the government writing the checks.”

In many parts of the United States, however, the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City are remembered not for the bribery scandal but for a different reason.

After never surpassing 13 medals at a Winter Games, the U.S. used home-turf advantage, an influx of new sports and the emotion of the recent Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks to capture 34 over three weeks in Utah.

In the aftermath, Park City and other mountain towns near Salt Lake City preserved and improved upon many of the venues, and continued hosting key international events. The freestyle world championships will be held in Park City in February.

Utah organizers say they could host the games for $ 1.35 billion, some $ 50 billion less than it cost in Russia for the 2014 Sochi Games, which are the most expensive games ever and stood out as a blaring warning signal that the IOC needed to streamline its bloated Olympic structure.

The exorbitant costs have changed the dynamic of Olympic bidding. In 2002, cities were trying to bribe IOC officials to award them the Olympics. These days, the IOC finds itself wanting for bidders.

The IOC normally awards Olympics seven years before they’re scheduled, though that calendar has been in flux because so many cities have dropped out.

Last year, the IOC handed out the 2024 and 2028 Summer Games at the same time because there were only two cities left in what began as a much bigger contest for 2024. Paris will host 2024, Los Angeles will host 2028, and if Salt Lake wins 2030, it would mark the first time since the IOC began staggering the Games two years apart, in 1994, that the same country has hosted back-to-back.

At this time, Salt Lake could be considered a favorite in a 2030 contest that hasn’t really taken shape yet.

Hirshland said the USOC has the luxury of time to refine Salt Lake City’s bid.

In fact, Salt Lake could still be a favorite for 2026 had it been allowed to go that route. Recently, voters in Calgary rejected that city’s attempt to host, leaving Stockholm and a joint bid from Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy as the only two remaining candidates. A bid from Utah was considered, but putting it in front of the Los Angeles Olympics provided too many hurdles on the marketing side.

Rob Cohen, chair of Denver’s Olympic bid committee, called it disappointing that Colorado lost out on the chance to bid but said the process prepared the city as it looks for other chances to showcase the city on the world stage.

As a partner, Browns said it will work toward strengthening the designers’ support network by further funding the scheme and providing mentorship programs that will focus on passing on the Browns team’s business and retail expertise.
Members of the Browns team will also sit on the NewGen judging panel to determine which designers will receive sponsorship in the coming seasons.
Current recipients include Halpern, Richard Quinn, Phoebe English, Matty Bovan, Liam Hodges, Kiko Kostadinov and Alighieri.
“Through partnerships like this, we will continue to demonstrate the Browns ethos, and we look forward to working closely with the BFC and the designers to build out meaningful initiatives with support and mentorship at the heart,” said Holli Rogers, the retailer’s chief executive officer.
Earlier this year, Browns also set up a new department dedicated to scouting and supporting young talent and is now looking to expand it into different segments, to reflect the huge variety of categories emerging talent can belong to.

Jada Pinkett Smith Gets Emotional Talking About Parents’ Abusive Relationship

Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk, wouldn’t be as successful as it is if she didn’t spill all the tea about her personal business.

And Monday’s episode was no exception, as the actress dished on dealing with domestic violence.

Jada talks to her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, about her abusive relationship with her father, the late Robsol Pinkett Jr., who died in 2010. Adrienne reveals that Pinkett Jr. physically abused her and was typically drunk during his violent spells.

“See, I was a violent drunk too, that’s why I had to stop drinking,” Jada replies.

“He gave me a black eye once, and I tried to hide it from Mommy, but she saw it,” Adrienne says.

Jada breaks down talking about her late father, who she describes as a “gentle soul.”

“It’s not easy to hear that your parents experienced that together,” she says, as Adrienne remarks that she wishes Robsol was still alive to share his side of the story.

“Now that I’m older, I have so much more compassion in knowing what he had gone through. You know, ’cause I was pretty harsh on him.”

‘Saturday Night Live’: Pete Davidson Apologizes to Lt. Com. Dan Crenshaw — And Gets Roasted

In a rare conciliatory moment from the usually-irreverent Saturday Night Live, Pete Davidson apologized to Lt. Com. Dan Crenshaw on Weekend Update on Saturday.

Sitting next to Crenshaw, Davidson expressed regret for a widely-criticized joke he made last week about the former Navy SEAL and newly elected Republican House Representative.

“I mean this from the bottom of my heart,” Davidson said. “It was a poor choice of words. The man is a war hero and he deserves all the respect in the world.”

Last week on SNL’s Weekend Update, Davidson had mocked Crenshaw’s eyepatch, which he wears due to an injury he sustained in an I.E.D. explosion while serving in Afghanistan.

“You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas, and not a hitman in a porno movie,” Davidson said of Crenshaw.

He then added, “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or whatever. Whatever.”

Earlier in the week, Crenshaw did not seem too interested in an apology from Davidson or Saturday Night Live.

“They certainly crossed the line, but their apology won’t mean anything to me,” Crenshaw said on Fox & Friends Monday. “I think what they should do is maybe pull their money together and donate to some veterans charities out there who could really use some help.”

As well as appearing on the show last night, Crenshaw delivered a serious note on respect for veterans and national unity.

“We can remember what brings us together as a country and still see the good in each other,” Crenshaw said. “This is Veterans’ Day weekend, which means that it’s a good time for every American to connect with a veteran.”

He also got to offer a few barbs of his own against Davidson.

“He looks like a troll doll with a tapeworm,” Crenshaw said.

DWTS’ John Schneider Gets Emotional Over His Strained Relationship with His Children

John Schneider is hoping he can mend his strained relationship with his three children.

In an exclusive clip of Monday’s Dancing with the Stars, the Dukes of Hazzard alum, who played Bo Duke on the comedy series from 1979-85, gets emotional while explaining how country music and DWTS has affected his life.

“What country music means to me is it’s three chords and the truth and it shines a light on things that happen in everyday life that are wonderful, not so wonderful, and that are heart-wrenching,” Schneider, 58, says.

“I’ve been going through a divorce now for four years and it’s awful. The worst part about it is that it’s wedged itself in between my three adult children and myself. Nothing I can do except hope one day one of my kids will call me up or show up. I look in the crowd every Monday thinking maybe tonight, maybe tonight.”

“If it weren’t for this music and now Dancing with the Stars, I don’t think I can survive it,” he admits. “It gives me great joy at a time where I desperately needed it.”

Earlier on in the season, Schneider briefly spoke towards his relationship with his children. whom he is not on speaking terms with.

“I’m hoping that I will do my family proud, I’ll do my love over there proud,” said Schneider told host Erin Andrews, referencing his girlfriend, Alicia, and added, “and maybe my children will speak to me again.”

After 21 years of marriage, Schneider’s estranged wife Elvira “Elly” Schneider filed for divorce in Los Angeles County on Nov. 14, 2014. She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split, according to court documents.

In September 2016, Schneider — he shares adult children Leah, Chasen, and Karis with Elvira — was ordered to pay his ex $ 18,911 every month, TMZ reported.

But in June, Schneider was sentenced to three days behind bars in the Los Angeles County Jail in June for failure to pay more than $ 150,000 in owed alimony payments to Elvira. The actor was released on the same day as his initial booking because of California’s overcrowded prison system, but his legal woes were not done with that.

Schneider was also ordered to serve an additional 120 hours behind bars for contempt, but that sentence was suspended by the court on the condition that he fulfills a four-part list of conditions, including filing back taxes to help clear title to their property in Apple Valley so that it could be transferred to her, paying his ex half of his owed earnings from Maven Entertainment, and offering certain financial disclosures before the end of the year.

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.

Stealing Candy from a Baby! Jimmy Kimmel Gets Parents to Pull Halloween Candy Prank on Their Kids

Trick-or-treat! These kids didn’t get something good to eat!

For the eighth year in a row, Jimmy Kimmel has convinced parents to trick their children into thinking they ate all of their Halloween candy.

On the Nov. 1 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the 50-year-old television host presented his audience with a compilation of parents filming their kids’ reactions to the hilariously cruel prank which he has dubbed “I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy.”

“Now it’s time to find out just how easy it is to take candy from babies,” Kimmel began.

In the first clip, one small boy grimaces like Marvel’s Hulk after being told his mom and dad ate all of his treats.

The boy later tells his mom “You’re going to get sick.” He then says his parents are going to “poop all over the floor.”

In the next video, one boy is in such disbelief about his parents taking his candy that he repeatedly says “but it was in there,” in reference to his trick-or-treat bucket.

He later became too frustrated to speak and just screamed to the top of his lungs.

One little girl took the mature route and told her mom, “I’m so disappointed at you.”

Next up, was another boy who runs into his kitchen to find all three of his buckets completely empty. When his younger sister comes in and asks ‘What happened?’ he just breaks down in tears.

Some kids even resorted to violence after hearing what their parents had done.

One little boy, who was dressed as a firefighter, began hitting his dad on the forehead after his candy went missing.

A different boy also began hitting his father after being asked if he wanted broccoli instead.

RELATED: Round Two! Jimmy Kimmel Has More Parents Pull Halloween Candy Prank on Their Kids

Interestingly, not every kid was upset. In fact, some didn’t even mind that their parents took their treats.

“I’m not mad at all. I would never be mad at you because you’re my mom,” one little boy said and his mom responded with “You’re too sweet. It’s gross.”

One little girl said, “I forgive you mommy. I love you.”

Random Man Whose Proposal Reaction Became a Meme Gets a Wedding Invite

It’s not every day one gets to witness a proposal — but 27-year-old Jonathan Miller’s reaction to one was so good that he’s been invited to two strangers’ wedding.

Keith Houseworth proposed to his girlfriend, Panda Green, with the help of the Jumbotron at a Dallas Mavericks game on Sunday night. After he got down on one knee, the crowd in the American Airlines Center went wild, of course — and Miller couldn’t help but insert himself into the excitement.

Green said that the couple ended up inviting Miller and his friends to their wedding, which is set take place November of 2019, according to INSIDER.

“They were an amusing part of our special day so we will see if John gets another meme out of our big day!” Green said.

No stranger to athletic fame, Miller played college football at the University of Oklahoma and Illinois State University. Green is currently a student athlete playing women’s basketball at the University of Dallas, where she is a junior studying history and education. Needless to say, these sporty folks probably expected to make it on ESPN and Bleacher Report for their respective goals and points, rather than a hilarious proposal video.

Fashion Gets Probed at Sustainability Conference

LONDON — What’s Going On?
That’s what The Centre for Sustainable Fashion is looking to answer with a two-day conference marking its 10-year anniversary at London College of Fashion.
The conference, which began Wednesday, comes on the heels of an inquiry into fast fashion’s impact on the environment that was launched in June by the House of Commons’ environmental audit committee and chaired by Mary Creagh, a member of Parliament, who also opened the two-day event.
“The U.K. buys more clothes than any other European country and every year we dispose of 1.1 million tons of clothes and 80 percent of that goes into the landfill,” she said, pointing out her reason for opening the inquiry.
While waste is the industry’s most visible problem, Creagh also addressed the impact of microbeads, plastic packaging, microfibers in waste water and pollution resulting from production. “Fashion has a history of chasing the cheap needle around the globe and turning a blind eye to environmental degradation,” she said.
The committee is working on finding solutions to these problems, she said, citing the microbeads ban that passed in the U.K. earlier this year and calls for industry players to replace their linear model with a circular one.

Blac Chyna Gets Emotional In Beverly Hills While On An Outing With Friends: ‘They Can Say Whatever They Want About Me’

Blac Chyna was recently spotted on a night out with her pals in Beverly Hills last Friday. She seemed a bit overemotional, as Daily Mail puts it, while she was leaving a steakhouse with her pals.

She was with a female friend, and she told her the following: ‘I want to get my message out. Go out and vote. It’s midterms.’

She also continued and said ‘I’m doing good and my kids are doing very well.’

Daily Mail reports that Chyna went on: ‘I keep quiet, I keep silent. Do you want to know why? Look up your religion. Get more informed. They say whatever they want about me. I look at it and laugh. You know why? Because it’s all false.’

Just recently Chyna discussed other subjects as well such as new music.

‘I’ve been working on some music. I never been the type of person to really coast. I just want to test all my boundaries to see if I can kind of do it,’ she told DailyMailTV.

Backgrid

‘My music is kind of fire. I have a little bit of singing, a little bit of rapping and I have a little love song.’

She also stated a little while ago that she would definitely consider getting back together with Rob Kardashian, but her baby daddy did not address the issue, at least not in public.

Speaking of Rob, Chyna’s mom, Tokyo Toni begged him via social media to let her see Dream Kardashian in a really emotional video.
