John Oliver Gives Ivanka Trump a Serious Reality Check: You Got Nothing on ‘Merit’

HBO

On Sunday night, John Oliver dedicated the opening portion of Last Week Tonight to the “series of setbacks” for President Trump this week, from his failure of a summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to the congressional testimony of Trump’s former fixer (and ex-RNC deputy finance chair) Michael Cohen.

“Over the course of the hearing, Cohen described several possible crimes by his former boss, from suborning perjury to campaign-finance violations, and yet, the Republicans primarily used their time to attack Cohen’s credibility,” offered Oliver in a brief recap.

But the HBO host was most riled up by the revelation that President Trump is said to have ordered his former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly to grant Jared Kushner top-secret security clearance—despite the protestations of Kelly and national security officials.

‘Black Panther’ Wins Best Ensemble At SAG Awards; Chadwick Boseman Gives Winning Speech [WATCH]

NEW YORK (AP) — “Black Panther” took the top award at Sunday’s 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards, giving Ryan Coogler’s superhero sensation its most significant awards-season honor yet and potentially setting up Wakanda for a major role at next month’s Academy Awards.

The two leading Oscar nominees — “Roma” and “The Favourite” — were bypassed by the actors guild for a best ensemble field that also included “BlacKkKlansman,” ”Crazy Rich Asians,” ”Bohemian Rhapsody” and “A Star Is Born.” Although “Black Panther” wasn’t nominated for any individual SAG Awards, it took home the final award at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Before a stage full of actors, Chadwick Boseman tried to put into context the moment for the trailblazing “Black Panther,” which also won for its stunt performer ensemble. “To be young, gifted and black,” he said, quoting the Nina Simone song.

“We know what it’s like to be told there isn’t a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on. … We know what’s like to be beneath and not above. And that is what we went to work with every day,” said Boseman. “We knew that we could create a world that exemplified a world we wanted to see. We knew that we had something to give.”

The win puts “Black Panther” squarely in contention for best picture at the Academy Awards where it’s nominated for seven honors including best picture. Actors make up the largest percentage of the academy, so their preferences can have an especially large impact on the Oscar race. In the last decade the SAG ensemble winner has gone on to win best picture at the Academy Awards half of the time.

In the lead acting categories, Glenn Close and Rami Malek solidified themselves as front-runners with wins that followed their triumphs at the Golden Globes. The 71-year-old Close, a seven-time nominee but never an Oscar winner, won best actress for her performance in “The Wife.” In her speech, she spoke about the power of film in a multiscreen world.

“One of the most powerful things we have as human beings are two eyes looking into two eyes,” said Close. “Film is the only art form that allows us the close-up.”

Malek, wining best actor over Christian Bale (“Vice”) and Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”) for his performance in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” seemingly sealed the Oscar many are predicting for him. Malek’s awards are mounting even as the director of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Bryan Singer, is facing multiple accusations of sexual assault with minors . Singer has denied the claims.

As he did at the Globes, Malek dedicated his award to Mercury.

“I get some power from him that’s about stepping up and living your best life, being exactly who you want to be and accomplishing everything you so desire,” said Malek.

More surprising was Emily Blunt’s best supporting actress win for her performance in the horror thriller “A Quiet Place.” Blunt, also nominated by the guild for her lead performance in “Mary Poppins Returns,” was visibly shocked. She wasn’t among Tuesday’s Oscar nominees for either film.

“Guys. That truly has blown my slicked hair back,” said Blunt, who praised her husband and “A Quiet Place” director John Krasinski as a “stunning filmmaker.” ”Thank you for giving me the part. You would have been in major trouble if you hadn’t.”

Best supporting actor in a film went more as expected. Mahershala Ali, who won two years ago for “Moonlight,” won for his performance in Peter Farrelly’s interracial road trip “Green Book.”

The Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won the first three awards handed out Sunday, sweeping the comedy series awards. It won best ensemble in a comedy series, as well as individual honors for Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub, whose win was a surprise in a category that included Bill Hader (“Barry”) and Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”).

“We cannot thank you enough,” said Shalhoub, speaking for the cast. “Stay with us.”

Tom Hanks presented the lifetime achievement award to Alan Alda , who in July revealed that he had been living with Parkinson’s disease for more than three years. The 83-year-old actor took the stage to a standing ovation while the theme to “M.A.S.H” played. He said the award came at a reflective moment for him.

“I see more than ever now how proud I am to be a part of our brotherhood and sisterhood of actors,” said Alda. “It may never have been more urgent to see the world through another person’s eyes. When a culture is divided so sharply, actors can help — a least a little — just by doing what we do. And the nice part is it’s fun to do it. So my wish for all of us is: Let’s stay playful.”

For the second time, the cast of “This Is Us” won best ensemble in a drama series. Other TV winners included Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), Darren Criss for “Assassination of Gianni Versace”, Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) and Patricia Arquette (“Escape at Dannemora”). Arquette thanked Special Counsel investigator Robert Mueller “and everyone working to make sure we have sovereignty for the United States of America.”

The SAG Awards had one thing the Oscars don’t: a host. Emcee Megan Mullally kicked off the awards by tweaking their role among the many honors leading up to next month’s Oscars. She called the SAGs “the greatest honor an actor can receive this weekend.”

The show did not boost the chances of other Oscar hopefuls, “A Star Is Born,” ”The Favourite” and “BlacKkKlansman,” which were all shut out Sunday night.

Among the attendees Sunday was Geoffrey Owens, the “Cosby Show” actor who caused a stir when he was photographed working at a New Jersey Trader Joe’s. He was among the performers who began the show with the SAG Awards’ typical “I am an actor” testimony. The SAGs also made time for one reunion: “Fatal Attraction” stars Michael Douglas and Glenn Close joined each other on stage as presenters.

‘SNL’ Recap: Pete Davidson Gives Subtle Nod to Ariana Grande

Pete Davidson proved he hasn’t left ex-fiancée Ariana Grande completely behind during the Saturday, January 26, episode of Saturday Night Live.

Bunny Girl

Davidson subtly alluded to Grande in a rap about his love for dogs. The women featured in the music video sported the pop star’s signature bunny ears, though it turns out they just really loved bunnies. Wink, wink.

Meet Dolton

Host James McAvoy spoofed The Bachelor’s Colton Underwood as a man named Dolton looking for love on Virgin Hunk. The bit even touched on the Hannah B. vs. Caelynn drama when a contestant told Dolton that she grew up with one of the other women in the house and “she’s a toxic, lying bitch with no teeth.”

Philly Perfect

The Scottish host impressed viewers with his spot-on Philly accent in this sketch about a Charmin commercial focus group. Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson and Kyle Mooney provided backup as the other totally unhelpful participants.

U.E.S.

Leslie Jones rapped an ode to the Upper East Side of Manhattan, which she calls home (“I live here because I remember where I came from,” she explained). The comedian raved about having easy access to fresh bread, Postmates, cabs and a “nobody peed in here” smell on the subway. Meanwhile, McKinnon, an Upper West Side resident, was content staying home with her “warm cat” and Netflix.

A Happy Surprise

Steve Martin made a cameo in the cold open as Roger Stone. The veteran SNL host even referenced one of his most iconic sketches when he described himself as “a normal and straightforward guy.”

Mr. H

Chris Redd starred in this pre-taped sketch about a high school student who was encouraged by his teacher, played by McAvoy, to come back to class. However, Redd’s character thought he was much smarter than he actually was. The word “genius” was used … by him … and was not accurate.

McAvoy, Not McGregor

McAvoy wore a kilt during his monologue to show off his Scottish heritage and his “shredded” calves. The actor also joked about being mistaken for Ewan McGregor, though he noted that the Christopher Robin star has more money than him. The host sweetly lost his place on the cue cards at one point but made it cute when he embraced the slipup.

The Champion

Musical guest Meek Mill performed a mashup of “Going Bad” and “Uptown Vibes” and later “Championships.”

Would You Let Your Besties Choose Your Date? This New App Gives Your Friends Control Over Your Love Life

How much do you trust your besties? Enough that you would let them pick your next date? New dating app “Ship” allows friends to pick potential matches for each other.

The idea is that your closest friends know you better than you may know yourself.

Aleen Kuperman, Jordana Abraham and Samantha Fishbein, creators of the meme account Betches, created the app to help daters have assistance in their mate selection process.

Dating apps are a huge part of today’s dating culture and people in relationships are begging their single friends to let them swipe for them,” the Betches founders said to The Independent.

“We felt like there could be a better way to incorporate your friends into your online dating experience,” Kuperman, Jordan, and Fishbein explain.

While the founders believe that getting your friends to dictate your dating decisions is a noble idea, dating coach James Preece thinks it may be a bad idea, considering we may tell our friends what we want versus what we need.

“Our friends know what we tell them,” Preece described.

“What we say we want, what we think we want, what we need and what we can get are all completely different things,” he expressed, meaning our friends may not be able to accurately guess our tastes.

The app also has an option where you can invite your friends into a “crew,” where everyone can swipe on each other’s behalf.

In theory, choosing dates for your friends sounds fun, but proceed with caution. Your friends could be choosing traits for you that they like, that have nothing to do with your own personal preferences. Dating and relationships psychologist Madeleine Mason Roantree says that your friends may choose dates for you based on their own agenda.

“The more open and honest you are to your friends about who you are and what you are looking for, the greater the chance of success you’ll have on this app,” Roantree told The Independent.

‘She-Ra’ Gives Us the Slow-Burn Queer Romance of Our Dreams

There’s a lot to love about Netflix’s new show She-Ra and the Princesses of Power — it’s quirky, quick-witted, stylistically gorgeous, and sweepingly inclusive. The 13-episode first season showcases a diverse pool of voice talent — even the titular princess herself, a white character, is voiced by Aimee Carrero, a woman of color — and a refreshing spectrum of body types. But above all, the show is an absolute smorgasbord of queerness.

Bow (Marcus Scribner), a reimagined fan-favorite from the original She-Ra series, struts around in crop-tops and was raised by two fathers (who we don’t see this season, but they’re promised a future appearance). Two princesses — Spinnerella (voiced by series creator Noelle Stevenson) and Netossa (Krystal Joy Brown) — are in an openly queer relationship. And at the center of all the action is the slow-burn queer romance of our dreams: A will-they-won’t-they, likely season-stretching romantic tension between Adora (Carrero) and her ex-BFF Catra (AJ Michalka).

Catra Adora She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Queer Sexual Tension Is the Best Sexual Tension

Friends throughout their tumultuous childhood in the evil Horde, the two girls have acted as protectors and confidantes for one another. During heartbreaking flashbacks, we see just how heavily Adora was favored by their nefarious guardian, Shadow Weaver, and how often Catra was relegated to second fiddle. We also see how deeply the two cared for each other. They shared everything, even a cot.

But when Adora discovers her true identity — to become one in a long line of women destined to take up the Sword of Protection and channel the ancient powers of the warrior She-Ra — and leaves the Horde, the lifelong friendship splits. Where there was once trust and tenderness, we see confusion, anger, heartbreak, and absolutely all of the sexual tension.

Catra Adora She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Love Is a Long Road

Catra and Adora are clearly friends, but they’re also very clearly more than that. And show creator Noelle Stevenson has a lot more in store. “The relationship between Adora and Catra is the defining one of the show,” Stevenson told FANDOM. “It’s so complex and complicated between the two of them, and they still have such a long way to go. These two people mean everything to each other and find themselves on opposite sides.” But could it possibly be the queer romance we’re hoping for? Stevenson is hesitant to say too much; she doesn’t want to guide fans’ interpretations.

“I don’t want to put a narrative on it that isn’t necessarily in the show itself. I want the people watching it to draw their own narrative from that. It’s something that continues to unfold through the series, and it’s something I’m very, very eager for people to see. Adora is a young woman when the show starts, she’s right on the edge of becoming a teenager. She’s stepping out into the world — finding her own voice, finding herself. There’s a lot to read into that, and a lot of it is subtextual. But it’s a reading that’s definitely fair.”

Catra Adora She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Lingering Hands and Prom Tropes

Two girls on the cusp of becoming teenagers, Adora and Catra’s dynamic silently tells the tale so many young queer women have lived: Do I like you? Or do I like you? During quiet moments, the two girls try to find their way back to the easy camaraderie they once knew. But it’s broken; it’s gone. And in its place, there are new and confusing feelings — especially when the two frenemies reunite for the Princess Prom. The eighth episode of the season plays like a mash-up of wonderful teen romcom tropes — an aesthetic Stevenson leaned into. “[That episode] comes from a love of teen angst, teen romcoms. Those were big inspirations.”

Catra shows up in a killer blood-red tux, and Adora’s eyes pop. “Catra’s suit fit her personality; she’s showing up to mess with Adora and make her jealous,” Stevenson laughed. “The suit screams, ‘Power move!’” And it works. The two share an unexpected dance that’s choreographed à la Pride and Prejudice, with swoops and lingering fingers laid gently together. Catra dips Adora; it’s as much a power play as it is a romantic dance move. But then, of course, Catra reveals that she’s kidnapped one of Adora’s best friends and their lingering hands part and clench back into fists.

Catra Adora She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Reading Between the Lines

Despite the sexy dance breaks, there’s a rebellion to be fought, and Catra and Adora have chosen opposite sides. “Catra’s feelings of betrayal towards Adora are personal. Adora’s more idealistic, and she loves everyone in the world and wants to save everybody. Catra can’t understand or accept that,” Stevenson explained. “That’s the core tragedy, not just of the characters, but of the show.”

And so the frenemies fight, seemingly to the death, so many times during the first season — on snowy cliffs, across battlefields, through forests. But when the killing blow comes, Adora can’t bring herself to swing the sword. She loops a hand around Catra’s waist and pulls her friend back from the edge of destruction. That tells us a lot, but the fact that Adora grabs Catra’s waist instead of her hand tells us even more.
