4 Essential Tips Before You Start Playing ‘We Happy Few’

It can be daunting when first starting We Happy Few. Dropped into a terrifying alternate version of Britain in the 1960s, all you have at the start is the clothes on your back and a dream of freedom. Exactly where do you go from there?

Even though We Happy Few doesn’t rely on its survival mechanics to quite as an extent as it did during the Early Access release, it can still be very important to ensure you’re gathering enough resources from the world around you in order to stay alive and make progress right from the go.

So, let us be your guide in your opening moments in this intimidating new land. Keep these tips in mind in order to survive the psychedelic nightmare that is Wellington Wells.

Fill your pockets with loot

Sure, We Happy Few isn’t the intense survival game it started out to be, but you’ll still need to do a fair bit of scavenging throughout the game. Pretty much everything you gather — whether it’s from sneaking into someone’s house or rooting in the nearest — has a use to you. Food? Water? Bits of old metal? You want it all.

If you do rummage through everything in sight, it won’t be long before you’re inventory is full to the brim with all sorts of components for crafting materials, but there are definitely a few things you should prioritize. One of the absolute essentials is Gilead Petals, which can be picked from the red-flowered bushes dotting the countryside and mushed together to make Healing Balm. It’s always useful to have some of these on you to heal in a pinch.

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for Bobby Pins, which are needed to create lockpicks. Security is pretty tight in many of the game’s areas, so being able to break in through a back door to avoid the Bobbies is always a bonus. They can also be used to open sealed chests and lockers to yield even more loot, though we would recommend keeping some saved for their main purpose.

Speaking of Bobbies, one other item to loot whenever you see it is Scotch. You can use this as an intoxicating bribe to get past a pesky guard blocking your path, so it’s always worth having a bottle or two with you.

Choose the right skills

In the first act of We Happy Few, you’ll play as Arthur. He’s a pretty terrible fighter, but he’s stealthy and quick on his feet. And while many of the choices on offer aren’t all that exciting, there are a few options that take best advantage of Arthur’s proficiencies.

Sensibly, the game’s tutorial encourages you to take “Sweet Dreams” first, which allows you to choke enemies unconscious from behind or suffocate them while they’re sleeping. It’s an incredibly powerful ability that’ll have you clearing out rooms or entire buildings without making a peep.

Further down in the stealth category, both “Ear to the Ground” and “Tech Friendly” are nice pickups. The former allows you to see an enemy’s footsteps from further away, while the latter means many of the game’s high-tech surveillance options won’t be able to see you. Both make the whole sneaking approach so much easier. In the same branch, “Oh You” is a useful timesaver as it stops people from being suspicious of you if they see you running or jumping about. That’s just what you’re like!

Elsewhere, “Herbalist” is worth consideration if you keep finding yourself getting into scrapes. The bonus healing will significantly lessen the demand on some of your resources. As of the others, they can be avoided unless they really suit your own playstyle. Outside of the handful of standout options, the choices you make on the skill tree aren’t massively impactful.

Don’t be afraid to run

Often you’ll find the stealthy approach is optimal in We Happy Few, given how easy it is to knock out enemies from behind and how clunky the combat can be if a mob of Joy-guzzling citizens descends upon your Downer. And while it may be tempting to wildly swing back at them with a cricket bat, fleeing is often the more sensible approach.

The tactical retreat is especially effective when playing as Arthur in act one. He’s not exactly the greatest fighter, but he does have the ability to sprint away very quickly from his pursuers. Fortunately, anyone who becomes hostile to you doesn’t give chase for too long either. Call it a fault of awkward AI — or maybe all the citizens are tripping so hard that they suffer from rapid memory loss.

Essentially, if you put enough distance between you or duck out of sight for long enough, they’ll return to their seemingly pleasant routines in no time. You can even go back to talk to them and they’ll have forgotten all about you!

Benches can also be very useful blending-in spots if you think you might get caught. If your dose of Joy is about to expire or you think a local is getting suspicious, just take a seat and whip out the daily paper for a quick browse until the moment passes. Or duck into one of the many hideouts across the world for instant safety.

Expand your wardrobe

If you want to make it a lot less stressful to blend into the various regions of Wellington Wells, then it’s important to have a diverse wardrobe. Wherever you go on the island, the locals can be incredibly judgemental folk, deciding whether they want to give you a pleasant hello in return or chase you down with a frying pan with one quick look at your clothing.

The less fortunate souls on the outskirts will want to see you in a Torn Suit, something effortlessly made if you find a rock to scuff the hell out of it. Be sure to save a Proper Suit and Shoes for when you return to the fancier regions, though, or they’ll look down on you as a Wastrel.

We Happy Few offers a number of other more specialized outfits, too. It can be handy to have a Boiler Suit on you when entering municipal or construction areas — no one will think twice about someone fiddling around with electronics wearing that. Fisticuff fans might want to consider the Padded Suit for some extra damage reduction, though it doesn’t seem necessary. On the other hand, a Gas Mask is definitely essential when heading into some locations to avoid damage from toxic fumes.

As for the Rubber Cat Suit? Well, we’ll let you discover all about that one for yourself!

And there you have it: a few words of wisdom for your new life in Wellington Wells. Remember, if it all goes wrong, you can always just pop a Joy and live in blissful ignorance forever!

We Happy Few is now available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

“I think we’ve all known for a bit,” Hale, who was being announced as the next ambassador for St. Jude’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, revealed exclusively to Us Weekly on Friday, August 10. “I’m really happy for her.”

The Life Sentence alum, 29, says that she, Bellisario, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson and Sasha Pieterse don’t have a group text chain, but they do stay in touch individually. “It’s been a while since all really caught up with each other, like we kind of all talk one on one … We all need a catch up real soon though because we’ve all gone in a million different directions,” she admitted.

She noted that the girls would have plenty to celebrate when they did finally reunite, with Janel Parrish and Pieterse both having tied the knot since the show’s end in June 2017. “Things have changed, so it will be nice to see everyone,” she told Us.

Don’t hold your breath for a full PLL reunion just yet, however: “I have a feeling we won’t all see each other for a while,” Hale said.

There is, however, hope for a mini get-together. “You know, I can’t say yes or no,” the “You Sound Good to Me” singer hinted of a potential appearance on The Perfectionists, the PLL spinoff starring Parrish and Pieterse that’s set to air in 2019. “I know that Ashley is directing I think and Troian is directing, we’ll see. I don’t know. I’m happy. I’m thrilled for all of them.”

Us confirmed on Monday, August 6, that Bellisario and husband Patrick J. Adams were expecting their first child.

The couple got married with a glamping-themed wedding in December 2016 after seven years together.

Netflix Exec Breaks Silence Over Aziz Ansari Controversy: ‘Happy’ to Keep Making ‘Master of None’

Netflix

Beverly Hills, CALIFORNIA — “I don’t have anything to share with you today.”

That was the most common refrain from Netflix vice president of original series Cindy Holland as TV critics and journalists grilled her about some of the biggest names the streaming service recently wooed, including the Obamas and black-ish creator Kenya Barris.

With respect to Barack and Michelle Obama, who signed a deal in May to produce shows and deals for Netflix, Holland said it is too early in the deal to have an update on what their content might look like. When the deal was announced, it was vaguely teased that the former president and first lady would produce “scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features” centering around issues that were important to them in office. No financial terms are known, though, for context, a deal with Ryan Murphy made in February was estimated to be worth $ 250-300 million.

This summer, keep your kids happy with these essential safety tips

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

Summer is almost here! I can’t wait. Our family is so done with schedules and schoolwork, and we’re ready for some hiking and swimming and other outdoor adventures.

But it’s good to be aware of the risks as well. Not so we can sit at home afraid to go out, but so we can be prepared to handle emergencies if we should have to. I fervently hope we do not.

summer safety tips for babies and children

Sun Safety Tips:

-Sunscreen

The FDA, the Mayo Clinic, and most professionals recommend that babies under 6 months do not wear sunscreen, but instead remain out of the sun. This is especially important between the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when the sun is at its peak. Be sure to keep your baby in a hat with a wide brim, sunglasses, and sun-protective clothing. All children over 6 months old should wear sunscreen of at least SPF 15 when you go outside. Be sure to reapply often — at least every two hours, and every time after they get out of the water. Also, most people don’t apply enough — be sure to use at least as much sunscreen as would fill a shot glass.

You can find more information on sun safety here.

-Heat

Be sure your babies and young children are also well-protected from heat stroke. Dress them in light, loose-fitting clothing and keep them in the shade as much as possible. Cool the car before taking them anywhere. Breast milk and formula will provide enough hydration for babies, older children should have plenty of water handy while they’re out and about.

We never, ever want to consider the possibility that we might forget a baby in the car, but it does happen. It’s even happened to me (fortunately, only for about 30 seconds, but enough for me to realize that we’re all susceptible). I once heard the suggestion that you take off your shoes and put one (or both) next to your baby’s carseat when you get in the car to drive. This post has some more great suggestions. Also remember to keep cars locked at home to prevent kids from playing inside.

Finally, be sure you don’t make this common mistake — putting a blanket, even a very thin one, over a baby’s stroller to shield him from the sun can cause the inside temperature to rise and your baby to overheat.

You can find information on heat stroke in babies here.

Water safety

-When to take babies in the water

In this BabyCenter article, Dr. Howard Reinstein, a pediatrician and American Academy of Pediatrics spokesman, recommends parents not take babies younger than 2 months in pools, lakes, or other swimming places. Newborns are vulnerable to illness and it’s safer to wait until they’re older. When you do take babies swimming, remember that they’re not as able to regulate their body temperature — watch your baby for signs they’re cold and dry them off when necessary. Also, be sure babies and young children do not drink the water in pools, streams, or wherever you’re swimming.

-Help prevent drownings

An estimated 370 drownings and 5,600 near drownings involving children under 15 occur in pools and spas each year, and 77 percent of those are children under the age of 5. The Life Saver Pool Fence’s Guide to Pool Safety recommends multiple layers of protection for pools — access doors that lock, pool alarms, a pool fence, water survival training for children who are old enough to crawl or walk, and CPR and rescue training for parents who own pools. Parents can buy wearable immersion alarms for their kids to wear, which go off if the child falls into the water.

Also, be sure children can’t climb over any fences using chairs or tables, and be sure doggy doors that would allow access are also blocked. Practice “touch supervision” as well — parents should be within arm’s length of a toddler at all times they’re near water.

We always had our babies and toddlers wear a PFD (personal flotation device) fitted for their size — babies are wiggly and I wanted that extra layer of protection. And even now that our kids are older and my husband and I are good swimmers, everyone wears PFDs when we’re kayaking, paddleboarding, or doing other boating activities. Our other personal rule is that no one swims alone with a baby. If something were to happen to a parent (we hit our head, got a cramp, whatever) I wanted an extra person there to help out.

Check here for more information on water safety.

Tick and Mosquito Bites:

The best way to prevent tick and mosquito bites (and the diseases they carry, such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus) is to make sure the environment around your house isn’t one they like. Keep ticks out by keeping your lawn well-cared for and manicured. Create a tick barrier — a wide strip of wood chips or bark — that separates your lawn from taller grass or brush. Keep deer out of your tick-free zone by putting up a deer fence. Also, ticks get Lyme disease from mice, so eliminate any wood piles or other nooks and crannies where mice like to live. Keep mosquitoes out by eliminating any standing water around your property, including places like flower pots or birdbaths. Make sure you have screens on your windows to keep mosquitoes out of the house.

You can also avoid bites by wearing long sleeves and long pants (I know…exactly what everyone wants to hear in the summer!). Children and adults should use bug spray, but talk to your pediatrician about what kinds of bug spray are for babies and kids, and how old they should be before wearing bug spray.

Inspect kids for ticks when they come inside and remove them immediately with tweezers. And call your pediatrician immediately if your child develops any out-of-the-ordinary reactions, such as a rash, fever, or flu-like symptoms.

Johns Hopkins has more information on ticks here, and the CDC has information on ticks and mosquitoes here.

Nas Isn’t Upset with Jay-Z for Dropping ‘Everything Is Love’ the Day After His Album, Happy for ‘Black Excellence’

Jay-Z and Beyonce dropping their surprise album the day after Nas released his may have been shade on Jay’s part, but Nas sources say it’s all love on his.

via TMZ:

Sources close to Nas tell us the Queensbridge rapper isn’t fuming about “Everything Is Love” being released on Saturday, and doesn’t think the Carters will steal any thunder from his new album, “Nasir.” We’re told Nas fully appreciates the fact Jay and Bey are hip-hop royalty at this point, and actually really likes their new record.

If you don’t know, and you should, Nas and Jay had a huge feud going in the late ’90s and early 2000s. They went at each other in songs and interviews for years before burying the whole thing in 2005.

They’ve been friends ever since, and we’re told Nas is more interested in “black excellence” these days … rather than drama.

That’s a relief. We can’t handle any more rap feuds at this moment.

Vanessa Trump Wishes Donald Trump Jr. a Happy Father’s Day

Vanessa Trump wished her estranged husband, Donald Trump Jr., a happy Father’s Day as he celebrated with their five children on Sunday, June 17.

“Happy Father’s Day times 5 @DonaldJTrumpJr !” she captioned a photo of the businessman and their children on Twitter. “Hope you had an incredible day with our kiddies !”

The eldest son of President Donald Trump took to Twitter to document his day with his brood — Kai, 11, Donald III, 9, Tristan, 6, Spencer, 5, and Chloe 4 — sharing funny photos of what happened when he attempted to get his kids to pose for a family photo.

“It started off all nice and friendly then the bottom fell out!!! Only my little monsters will turn a great fam pic into a wrestling match,” he captioned the pics that showed his kids piling on top of him. “We had an awesome Father’s Day. #fathersday #family #weekend #familytime #wrestling.”

Vanessa, 40, filed for divorce from Donald Jr. in March. “After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways,” the pair said in a statement to Us Weekly. “We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time.”

The divorce filing came as multiple sources confirmed to Us Weekly that Donald Jr. had an affair with Celebrity Apprentice contestant Aubrey O’Day. They met on the set of the NBC show in late 2011 and their romance continued until March 2012, when Vanessa found emails between her husband and the Danity Kane singer and confronted her about it over the phone.

Donald Jr., 40, has already moved on from his marriage and is dating Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle. Vanessa came to her estranged husband’s defense earlier this week after some critics called for the anchor to be fired over the new romance.

“The lengths people will go to attack a woman simply because she’s dating Don,” Vanessa tweeted on Thursday, June 14. “We’ve been separated for over 9 months and respect each other’s decisions & privacy. We’ll focus on raising our great kids.Would be nice if the press did the same rather than obsess over our pvt lives!”

New ‘Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass’ Details Will Make Fans Happy

Of all the cool details we’ve learned about Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, the one we’re most excited about is the fact that there will be hundreds of thousands of enemies on-screen at once.

Not “thousands,” which may be the level of craziness you’d expect from the franchise. “Hundreds of thousands” was the term used, and the developers do mean that literally.

Towards the end of our demo session we saw an entire army of classic Serious Sam enemies coming over a hill. At the time we were in a large harvester and had been mowing down individual bomb-carrying enemies.

The prospect of mulching a horde of smaller enemies seemed like amazing fun — but unfortunately the demo ended right there. It’s early days, and perhaps the engine isn’t ready to show us all of that blood.

Serious Sam 4 Kleer Skeleton
Those damn Kleers are back in Serious Sam 4

The 3D models for all of the Serious Sam enemies, like Gnaars, you’d expect look much more “realistic” now. As real-to-life as you can expect a headless, screaming maniac carrying two bombs with lit fuses. All of which makes it more impressive that Croteam is able to fit so many into one battle.

After Devolver included precisely zero minutes on Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass in its press conferences, we still had nothing to go on other than the original teaser trailer. In the interview above, we were able to get a few of the main important points out of Croteam.

Co-Op and Huge Levels

There will definitely be co-op, fans will be happy to hear. You and a friend can roam the incredibly large maps together, looking for secret areas, tackling quests, and circle-strafing your way to victory.

This is the French countryside, and everything is very green and pleasant, but make no mistake — it’s already been taken over by Hellish forces. In the full game, sections of the world map will either be under control of Earth or Mental, and you’ll be liberating what territories you can. In our demo, we were in France because a nearby fort had a relic we needed — the Holy Grail.

Serious Sam 4 Beheaded Kamikaze motorcycle
Don't spend too long enjoying the French scenery

Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass features huge levels, and Croteam believes the wide open spaces are a pillar of the franchise. It’s not an open world, but it does kind of act like one. There’s a lot of exploration, side quests with NPCs, and tackling objectives in whatever order you like. We’re told a level will be 80×80 miles.

There were long periods of roaming the wide levels on Sam’s motorcycle, but Croteam is keen to keep you on your toes as you ride. Enemies will run out of forests and other hidden spots and intercept you if you don’t have a weapon handy.

Serious Sam 4 bull charge
In circle-strafe we trust.

Speaking of forests, there were a lot of trees dotting the landscape, which could provide a different kind of firefight than Serious Sam fans are used to. Either as providing cover, or just making it more difficult for the AI to pick a path through. The trunks provide more opportunity for your shots to be blocked as well.

Serious Sam 4 Weapons Have Kick

We also noted that the weapons seemed to have a lot more kick than in previous games. And having just recently played through the co-op of Serious Sam 3, that old co-op action was fresh in our memory.

There’s a bit more weight to weapons as they kick back, as opposed to the old way of just watching to see if an enemy explodes as your only form of aesthetic feedback on your shots.

Serious Sam 4 new enemy shotgun
The shotgun shows more kick against these new enemies.

NPCs will occasionally help, too. An injured woman in a stone tower was blasting enemies with a sniper rifle as our demo driver circle-strafed on the ground. She had radioed for help, and we had answered. It was a side quest, but one that resulted in us obtaining a new sniper rifle.

Harvester kamikaze bio-mechanoid Serious Sam 4
Yep, that's a harvester. Yep, we're riding it into an army.

All things considered, Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass is shaping up to be very much what we’d expect, but cranked up to eleven. We didn’t expect to see anywhere near the amount of enemies on-screen as Croteam is boasting, and the levels are also significantly larger than usual. Time will tell if it’ll all run well, and how co-op will affect that.

Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass will be out on PC/Linux at a date to be announced.

Apple’s battery replacements still havn’t made everyone happy

Apple battery replacement program cost wait time

Late last year, Apple admitted that it has been throttling performance on older iPhones with worn-out batteries. The admission won Apple a legion of bad press and enough lawsuits to keep its legal department in fancy cars for the next decade. Since then, Apple has mostly appeased its customer base with a discounted iPhone battery replacement plan, some promises to be nicer, and the requisite CEO prime-time soul-searching interview.

But Apple’s problems aren’t over. BBC’s Watchdog program, one of TV’s longest-running consumer advocate programs, aired a deep dive into Apple’s battery replacement program this evening, and the results aren’t exactly glowing for Apple.

'Happy Death Day 2' Begins Shooting This Month; Here's Everything We Know

Cleverly taking the premise of Groundhog Day and applying it to the horror genre, Happy Death Day is a pleasant little slasher film. But it mostly works because actress Jessica Rothe is so appealing in the lead role as a college student who keeps getting killed on her birthday, only to wake up the same morning over and over.

Happy Death Day received mostly positive reviews (71% on Rotten Tomatoes) and wound up with an impressive $ 123 million gross worldwide….

Meet Happy Wendy Girl, the Rescue Dog in a Wheelchair

She has a lot to smile about! Happy Wendy Girl is a puppy mill survivor with a great attitude. The social media star is now living it up and sharing her fab life with her fans on Instagram.

The 11-year-old poodle escaped euthanasia and was rescued, and later adopted by her new family. She now lives quite the exciting life, and has more than 10,000 followers on Instagram in an account she shares with her adopted rescued sister, Happy Yogi.

Happy Wendy Girl
Happy Wendy Girl Courtesy of Happy Wendy Girl/Instagram

Yogi was rescued by Wendy’s family nearly five years ago when Yogi’s owner left her at a shelter after having her for a decade. “Happy GOTCHA Day to my Sweet Sister Yogi! 💕🐶💕 4 YRS AGO, mommy was in tears for hours over this photo posting at a high kill shelter,” the family wrote on Instagram on behalf of Wendy in June 2017. “There was a video that went viral of Yogi’s owner dumping her at shelter after having her for 10-11 yrs. Yogi’s face was so happy and then it turned into confusion and sadness. The next day, Mommy drove over 4 hrs to the shelter to rescue Yogi from being put to sleep. At first mommy was angry at her owner but now she knows it was a blessing in disguise. I got a new senior sister who loves belly rubs, cuddling, sunbathing and treats!”

Though Wendy always looks happy, especially with her sister, the little black pooch has her own health troubles. She suffers from a slipped disc in her back, which requires her to use a doggy wheelchair to get around since she can’t use her rear legs.

The pooch doesn’t let her disability hold her back. She’s often running around, swimming, playing with her toys and her fellow furry friends in the videos shared on social media. The Instagram star is also quite stylish, usually wearing cute outfits and colorful sunglasses in her adorable photos. And like any popular pooch, she’s got a cute gang of furry friends, including, Blossom, Olive and fellow Instagram sensation, Maxx Mercedes.

One of Wendy and Yogi’s owners is a firefighter in California, and they often give him shoutouts on Instagram to thank him for the work that he does to help other people in need. The pair of pooches stopped by the firehouse in September 2017 for a quick visit with their human dad. “Me and my sister Yogi surprised daddy 👩🏼‍🚒 at the fire station today! 🚒🔥🚒🔥,” the family captioned a video of their sweet dogs. “He’s been working a lot and we know he misses us so we decided to swing by to say hi and smell stuff.”

The family visited the National September 11 Memorial in New York City in September 2016 and wrote a sweet message for their dad and other firefighters: “At the 9/11 Memorial 🇺🇸… Thank you daddy and all the firefighters out there who help people and animals like me everyday! We ❤ you.”

Wendy first joined Instagram in May 2016, and quickly gained the attention of dog lovers everywhere. Watch the clip above to see Happy Wendy Girl in action.

Killer Mike Defended Gun Ownership on NRA TV and Some Of His Fans Are Not Happy

Rapper Killer Mike is facing both backlash and praise after defending gun ownership, particularly among black Americans, in an NRA TV video.

The Run the Jewels artist called himself “very pro-Second Amendment” in the video, which was posted Saturday, the same day as the March For Our Lives protests happening around the country and world. The rapper, who publicly and vocally supported Bernie Sanders during the 2016 presidential campaign, also condemned those, including celebrities, who have joined the anti-gun movement simply because it aligns with the progressive agenda.

“You can’t continue to be the lackey,” he said. “You’re a lackey of the progressive movement because you have never disagreed with the people who tell you what to do.”

Killer Mike, who has spoken out in favor of gun ownership in the past, also said he told his children not to participate in school walkouts organized to protest gun violence, and said he encouraged his daughter to get a gun after a shooting on her college campus.

“I told my kids on the school walkout, ‘I love you. If you walk out that school, walk out my house,’” he said.

The interview attracted a range of reactions online, with some viewers praising the rapper’s decision to share his thoughts, and others taking issue with either his message or his decision to share it on an NRA platform.

The rapper, for his part, has stood by both his positions and his decision to speak with the NRA.

E! Is ‘Happy’ with Ryan Seacrest’s Oscars Coverage Despite Relatively Quiet Red Carpet: Source

Critics have pointed out that E!’s Oscars red carpet pre-show, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, lacked its usual A-list lineup compared to ABC’s broadcast — but the network isn’t concerned.

“They are happy with the interviews that they got and the folks that stopped and talked to Ryan. They’re happy with how it went and with who they were able to talk with,” a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE. “They had a wide-ranging group of  talent, nominees and otherwise.”

The question of who might not stop for Seacrest, 43, arose after his former E! News stylist Suzie Hardy alleged that he sexually harassed and assaulted her — including grabbing her crotch multiple times — throughout her employment at E! from 2007-13. Seacrest has staunchly denied her allegations and accused her of blackmail, and his employers have stood by him.

Be sure to check out PEOPLE’s full Academy Awards coverage to get the latest news on Hollywood’s big night.

On Sunday night, stars including Allison Janney, Christopher Plummer, Rita Moreno, Mary J. Blige, Taraji P. Henson, Whoopi Goldberg and Tiffany Haddish chatted with Seacrest. But nominees from major categories like Meryl Streep, Margot Robbie and Timothée Chalamet didn’t, along with presenter and red carpet favorite Jennifer Lawrence, who’d previously told Howard Stern that she wasn’t sure whether she’d stop for E!

Still, the source says there were other factors at play.

“The Oscars is tough because there is that embargo hour for last hour leading up to the awards show where only ABC is able to air interviews. It’s hard to get some of the big names three hours before the event is going to start,” the source explains. “With the natural progression of celebrities arriving on the red carpet, a lot of it does happen closer to the awards show. Oscars specifically is a little bit more challenging because just as outlets are starting to hit a groove, then they have that embargo hour where they aren’t able to freely interview all of the celebrities who come. In years past, that doesn’t work to any other outlet’s advantage.”

The source adds that E! stands by an investigation finding “insufficient evidence” of Hardy’s allegations and calls Seacrest “a consummate professional. He does it all and he continues to do it all. I don’t think a person who wasn’t positive would be able to continue with the schedule he has to keep on a daily basis! He deserves a lot of credit.”

As for that 30-second delay in the broadcast, rumored to be a cushion in case any actors brought up Hardy’s allegations?

“Every show is different when it comes to delays and how the shows come together with the content from multiple cameras. Brief delays always happen, and they do vary from show to show,” the source says. “E! sometimes has to conduct interviews during commercial breaks. This was normal practice, not to protect Ryan.”

The 90th Oscars were held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on March 4, 2018, and were telecast live on ABC.

Rocket Lab CEO sent a big fake ‘star’ into orbit, and scientists aren’t happy about it

humanity star rocket lab

It’s no secret that the Earth currently has a bit of a space junk problem. There are so many objects floating around our planet that they’re beginning to run into each other, and it’s virtually impossible to track all the defunct bits and pieces of satellites and discarded spacecraft debris. It’s a danger to astronauts and future space missions, and the problem is getting worse with each passing year. With that in mind, it’s probably pretty obvious why Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck’s decision to send a piece of floating “art” into orbit isn’t sitting well with some in the scientific community.

Earlier this month, Rocket Lab conducted a mission to deliver some important satellites into orbit for a number of different clients. The launch went off without a hitch, but along with the satellites was an unexpected delivery in the form of a giant, reflective “disco ball” designed to function as a fake star and be visible from Earth without the use of a telescope. It’s called the Humanity Star, and it serves no purpose other than to sparkle in the night sky.

How to Protect the ‘Happy’ in Your Holidays

’Tis the season of Christmas trees on every corner and a flood of sentimental sensory overload designed to fill your head with visions of sugarplums (or the stocking-stuffers of your wildest dreams).

Yet, on any given day we awaken to unsettling, sometimes devastating, news: missile test-launches with their threats of mass destruction; murders of churchgoers, school children and music lovers; computer hacks that put your financial security and very identity at risk, even as you fret over how the latest news on healthcare insurance and tax reform might impact your ability to live your best life. This is not the stuff that “Joy to the World” is made of.

All the lights, tinsel, and merry-making in the world can’t put a shine on the dull ache that grows heavier with every miserable prompt from your newsfeed.

It’s enough to make you call foul-la-la-la-la as your peaceful, silent nights give way to anxious, sleepless nights.

“Disturbing things are going to happen in the world,” says psychiatrist Dr. Janet Taylor. “They always have, but we didn’t always know. Now, we have a president who likes to keep us off-balance and a news cycle that drives itself on negativity.

“Our brains are not equipped to absorb relentless chaos,” Taylor continues. “Stress on the brain can have a cumulative traumatic effect, leading to depression, sleeplessness, anxiety, and addiction.”

So, what’s a not-so-happy holiday seeker to do? ”You can’t control what happens in the world,” says Taylor, who is a self-care strategist, “but you can control the flow and quality of information you’re getting.”

Start by keeping track of BE’s ULTIMATE #BUYBLACK HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE and get a jump on next year’s shopping, which will make your shopping far less stressful and way more satisfying. But before you load up the shopping cart for others, Taylor suggests that you take a page from the personal finance gamebook, and give to yourself first. Here are her favorite gifts for the soul:

Put down your smartphone and think about how you really feel. You can’t get what you need if you don’t know what you need.

Seek more face-time, then smile. “Our parents had more clubs and Sunday dinners where you could sit around the table together and unpack stuff, or get face-to-face comfort,” says Taylor. “Even if you look into the faces of strangers as you walk down the street and smile, you’d be amazed at the positive responses, and the positive feelings you get from them.”

Know when you’ve had enough and tune out, without feeling any guilt or shame. “Not knowing about another murder is not ignorance,” says Taylor.

Treat yourself—with care. Go ahead and indulge, but in moderation. Have the ice cream sundae, not the whole gallon; get a massage, but don’t max out your credit card on a spa trip you can’t afford. There can be a fine line between self-soothing and self-medicating. Do what’s going to make you feel genuinely good in the moment, and the day after, and the week after that

“Be the change” can feel like a tall order, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be as simple as responding to a mean comment with a kind one, or to a selfish act with a generous one. If you want to change the conversation, just do it. Refuse to tear others down or share useless negative information. Or counter all the negativity you can’t control around you by making a positive change in yourself. Eating healthier, re-tooling your résumé, cleaning your junk drawer, even making your bed can give you a sense of control and accomplishment when you feel overwhelmed.

“We are accepting that the world is uncertain and unpredictable,” says Taylor, “but our bodies aren’t built to be always on edge, and we don’t have to accept that constant stressfulness and anxiety.” Especially when comfort and joy are available for free.

Bill Bryson once said of Malhamdale: “I won’t know for sure if it is the finest place there is until I have died and seen heaven (assuming they let me at least have a glance), but until that day comes, it will certainly do.” The much-loved travel writer was a local resident. He also talked of the “Malham wave”, where drivers would raise a finger in recognition when passing on the local roads.

As my brother and I pulled in one Friday in September after a long drive from London, we got the wave, only it wasn’t a friendly greeting a van driver gave us, but rather the finger.

Happy Death Day Scares Off Blade Runner at Weekend Box Office

(LOS ANGELES) — The box office might be struggling this year, but the horror genre is alive and well.

This weekend the “Groundhog Day”-like horror pic “Happy Death Day” scored a first-place finish, surpassing expectations and blowing the much costlier and star-driven “Blade Runner 2049” out of the water.

Studio estimates Sunday show “Happy Death Day” took in $ 26.5 million from 3,149 North American theaters. With a $ 5 million production price tag, “Happy Death Day” is already a hit.

With a PG-13 rating, the film scored big with younger audiences — 63 percent were under 25.

It’s the latest success story from Blumhouse Productions, which earlier this year released “Split” and “Get Out,” with the help of Universal Pictures, which distributed.

Jim Orr, executive vice president of domestic distribution for Universal, said “Happy Death Day” is an original film that’s reimaging the genre.

“It’s as much thriller as it is horror film. It’s scary, it’s funny, and it has an extraordinarily clever script that is very well executed,” Orr said. “Blumhouse owns this space no doubt about it, and they do this better than anybody consistently.”

The film also had the benefit of coming on the heels of the massive success of “It,” which has earned $ 314.9 million domestically to date. The “Happy Death Day” trailer played in front of “It” at theaters, which “exponentially increased” audience awareness, said comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

Horror continues to be one of the bright spots during a roller-coaster year at the box office.

“This is a horror gold rush at the theaters,” Dergarabedian said. “It’s been perhaps the most consistently positive story this year.”

One film that does not look destined for a happy ending is “Blade Runner 2049,” which fell 54 percent in its second weekend in theaters, adding $ 15.1 million to bring its domestic total to $ 60.6 million.

The film was a costly endeavor with a production price tag north of $ 150 million and was well-reviewed by critics. But it couldn’t manage to draw in significant audiences beyond the fans of the 1982 original, which was also a flop upon release.

Jackie Chan’s “The Foreigner” debuted in third place with $ 12.8 million from 2,515 screens, while “It” landed in fourth place in its sixth weekend in theaters.

The Kate Winslet and Idris Elba disaster pic “The Mountain Between Us” rounded out the top five with $ 5.7 million.

Other new releases landed outside the top 10. The Thurgood Marshall biopic “Marshall” took in a promising $ 3 million from 821 theaters.

“Marshall is off to a solid start,” said Open Road Films CEO Tom Ortenberg in a statement. “We expect Marshall to hold very well and run well into the fall.”

But the Wonder Woman creator biopic “Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman” failed to capitalize from the massive success of “Wonder Woman” earlier this year. The film earned only $ 737,000 from over 1,200 locations.

“Goodbye Christopher Robin,” about author A.A. Milne and the creation of the beloved children’s books and characters, also got off to a poor start with $ 56,000 from nine theaters.

“October is off to a slow start,” Dergarabedian said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1.”Happy Death Day,” $ 26.5 million ($ 5 million international).

2.”Blade Runner 2049,” $ 15.1 million ($ 29.3 million international).

3.”The Foreigner,” $ 12.8 million ($ 5.2 million international).

4.”It,” $ 6.1 million ($ 10.4 million international).

5.”The Mountain Between Us,” $ 5.7 million ($ 4.1 million international).

6.”American Made,” $ 5.4 million ($ 3.2 million international).

7.”Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” $ 5.3 million ($ 15.6 million international).

8.”The Lego Ninjago Movie,” $ 4.3 million ($ 9.5 million international).

9.”My Little Pony: The Movie,” $ 4 million ($ 4.9 million international).

10.”Victoria and Abdul,” $ 3.1 million ($ 1.9 million international).

‘Happy Death Day’ Cast Competes in Horror Movie Trivia

Happy Death Day opens in theaters today. The cast — Jessica Rothe, Ruby Modine, and Israel Broussard — along with director Christopher B. Landon recently visited FANDOM, where we tested their horror movie chops.

We thought Landon would win this easily; he’s a horror movie buff and written/directed numerous horror films including multiple Paranormal Activity sequels.

We threw them a couple softballs before getting into some more obscure movie trivia. You might be surprised to see who took this one in the end.

What’s also evident in our cast interview is just how well they get along, which is also apparent in the film. Happy Death Day has an interesting plot. The main character, Tree (La La Land’s Rothe) gets murdered by a masked killer on her birthday (hence the title). But after she “dies,” her birthday — and her death day — resets, and she gets killed again.

You can learn more about what makes Happy Death Day unique from other slasher flicks here, and read our review of the new horror film here.

And if you like quizzes yourself, take this FANDOM quiz here to see what horror film you’d find yourself in.

UN International Day of the Girl

Did you know that 15 million girls will never have the opportunity to learn to read and write in primary school or that a staggering 90% of countries still have at least one law that restricts economic equality for women?

Together with Plan International UK, we at Marie Claire are fighting to change this, and you can help too by donating here to the Girls Fund.

“Girls’ education and empowerment is an issue close to our heart and something we have long championed at Marie Claire,” says editor-in-chief Trish Halpin, who is chairing a panel with Plan UK International and Unilever today. Themes discussed will include everything from career choices and body image to how gendered inequalities create economic and social barriers to young women worldwide.

“Today is about taking time to think about what more needs be done and celebrating the girls out there succeeding against the odds.” With that in mind, we look at the amazing work being done by the charity with girls around the world and how you can support them too.

New ‘Happy!’ Trailer Is Demented, Amazing, and Very NSFW

Happy! might be the new show I’m most stoked about. Based on the graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson, Happy! tells the story of Nick Sax. Nick is an ex-cop turned hitman and he’s about as sleazy as you can get. After a botched attempt on his life, Nick is resuscitated and finds he can now see a tiny blue unicorn named Happy.

Happy is the imaginary friend of Hailey, a little girl who has been kidnapped by an evil Santa Claus for… well, let’s just say it’s ugly stuff. Happy wants to try and get Nick to save Hailey and maybe find a little redemption in the process.

It’s a grimy, gonzo, gory, and goofy story. And now, we have our best look at the series yet in the form of a new trailer.

Warning! This Trailer Is Pretty NSFW!

WOW. This looks nuts. The series director is Brian Taylor, one of the co-directors of Crank. I’ve sung Crank‘s praises before and this looks like a fun continuation of Taylor’s manic approach to filmmaking. If it’s even half as bonkers as Crank, then we’re in for a hoot. Plus, he just put out the Nicholas Cage horror-comedy Mom and Dad (read our review) and it looks like he might be on a roll.

The graphic novel is a self-contained story and it seems like the first season of Happy! intends to tell that entire tale. Exactly how the show intends to go beyond one season could be difficult, but I trust the talent involved. Grant Morrison is on board as executive producer and writer, and I’ve already thrown my hat in with Brian Taylor. but how about that cast? Christopher Meloni and Patton Oswalt as the leads? Sold.

I’ll be screening the first episode of Happy! later this week at New York Comic-Con. My hopes are very high. I’ll let you know what I think. And you can watch Happy! when it premieres on Syfy on December 6.

5 hands-free items that keep my baby happy for 5 minutes

by

Kelly Wilbanks

posted in Products

So, it’s the witching hour. Dinner needs to be made, but my 2-year-old just woke up from her nap and wants to be cuddled. My 5-year-old needs me to do her hair “right now” and my baby just wants to be held. This scenario causes me the utmost stress.

I’m actually pretty calm, cool, and collected when my kids get hurt or are sick. I think I’ve done an okay job helping my kids manage friendships and interactions with people. But, boy do I lose my cool when they ALL WANT ME AT THE SAME TIME.

So, here are a few items that help me keep my hands free and my baby playful when I really need them.

hands-free-baby-item-collage

The Fisher-Price Infant‑to‑Toddler Rocker is one of my favorites. It can be used for several stages of your baby’s development: as a cradle, as a bouncer, and later as a toddler chair. My 6-month-old loves to play with the toys hanging above her. Sometimes I’ll sit her in the kitchen so she can watch me work. It’s one of the best go-to options for 0-6 months. (Amazon, $ 30.30)

fisher-price-rocker

We have a love/hate relationship with Bumbos, but when they work, they are great. The “hate” part is that my babies are notoriously chubby. Her thick baby thighs combined with her cloth diaper means it takes two people to unwedge her.

The nice thing about the bumbo is it lets my baby sit up, and putting items on the tray lets her practice grabbing. Sometimes the five minutes I need is just to go to the bathroom. A Bumbo definitely fits better in our small bathroom than an activity center. (Amazon, $ 43.99)

I have used our doorway jumper a few times to give my baby a different way to play. It’s fun watching her learn about her body and she squeals with joy when she gives herself a good lift. I just hang it on the lip of the doorway frame and off she goes. It’s nice when I’m trying to get a task done like laundry or dishes and I can look up at her and make eye-contact while she plays. (Amazon, $ 17.99)

Activity centers are great for the next level of play. They’re designed to help your baby self-entertain. As the mother of a first-born who needed me to entertain her, I’m thrilled when I see my little baby enjoying activities on her own.

I also like this activity center because it can be used several ways. First with the little seat as they learn to use their legs to get around. Then you can take off the seat and they have an activity table to play at. Toys that last a few stages always get kudos from me. (Amazon, $ 69.00)

And finally, we love our Summer Infant Pop’N Jump Portable Activity Center because I love the word portable. This play center folds down so it can easily be carried. I can take it outside and with the sunshade, my daughter’s protected from the sun while I’m gardening.

We take it with us camping, on trips or just use it in our living room. It has some attachable toys so it’s always ready to go. It’s part jumper so as my baby’s legs get stronger that feature is beginning to come into play too.  (Amazon, $ 69.99)

All of these items give me time to get stuff done when I can’t wear my baby. These toys are all great learning tools; Annie is exploring, touching, and learning how her body works. I like that Annie has lots of places to land and that each one offers something different for her to do.
