Holiday Party Sportcoats, UK Made Dress Shoes, & More – The Thurs. Men’s Sales Handful

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend or a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below, plus bonus sales if need be. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

J. Crew: 35% off select w/ READYTOPARTY

J. Crew

That 35% off code makes me think of this:

Or, this.

Anyway, I do believe this is the first time this season that J. Crew’s party-ready, velvet shawl collar sportcoats have gone on sale. And there’s time to get em’ in the door and tailored before the mistletoe gets hung. Nice to see their Oar Stripe collection getting the cut as well. Big thanks to Brandon D. for the tip!

Massdrop: Made in the UK Loake Cap Toes – $ 239.99 FINAL ($ 360)

Made in the UK Loake Cap Toes

Goodyear welted, Made in the UK, and your choice of either a smooth leather sole, or a studded dainite sole for grip. It IS UK sizing though. So, most are gonna wanna size down a full size. Just be careful with that. Estimated ship date is December 19th. Final sale of course since it’s Massdrop.

GAP: 40% off Everything no exclusions w/ GIFT

GAP

Exclusion free? That means even their excellent, do anything casual – smart casual belts are getting the cut (leather accessories are usually excluded).

Allen Edmonds: $ 100 off Nomad Chelseas

AE Nomad Chelseas

The pearl clutching over the “new” Allen Edmonds has really hit a fever pitch. Its become a tiresome sport now, by some, to rag on what Allen Edmonds has been up to. Yes, some of it isn’t good. But that doesn’t mean the whole company is aflame. Yet. And I’ve had good luck with the Nomad collection. Super comfortable and wearable. And no, the “featherwelt” construction isn’t a cemented construction. It’s 360 Goodyear. Look, I hate to be an Allen Edmonds apologist. I don’t like everything the new owners (Caleres) are doing. But there’s still plenty to really like about AE. To me. For now.

Club Monaco: Extra 30% off Sale Items

Club Monaco

There doesn’t seem to be a ton in the Club Monaco sale section right now? But an extra 30% off is always appreciated. Some tempting cold weather stuff too, like that plaid coat and that wide color selection for their simple snap wrist gloves. No code needed here. Extra 30% off happens at checkout.

BONUS  Brooks Brothers: 30% off Select Sportcoats, 2 1818 suits for $ 1499

Big fan of Brooks Brothers sportcoats. Regent fit is more of an athletic fit, while the Milano is a true slim. Lots of exclusions, but there are some great looking jackets in there.

Karl Lagerfeld to Switch on Champs-Élysées Holiday Lights

FAMILY AFFAIR: After Chanel brand ambassador Lily-Rose Depp last year, Karl Lagerfeld himself will switch on the Christmas lights on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris, symbolizing the famed retail thoroughfare’s shift toward a more upscale positioning.
The designer, who helms Chanel and Fendi, in addition to his own Karl Lagerfeld brand, is set to inaugurate the holiday decorations at a ceremony on Nov. 22 alongside Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
“Karl Lagerfeld is a great designer and one of the leading personalities of the 21st century,” Jean-Noël Reinhardt, president of the Comité des Champs-Elysées, told a press conference on Thursday. “He marvelously embodies the values of French excellence that we try to promote.”
Reinhardt noted that Lagerfeld’s appearance comes at a time of intense activity on the street, with the planned arrival in the next 12 months of the Galeries Lafayette department store, an Apple flagship, and new boutiques for Dior Couture and Dior Parfums, Bulgari, Chanel Parfums, Lancôme and Nike.
The Champs-Elysées is also set to welcome new corporate offices for companies including Chanel, which will move some of its staff to the building housing the new Galeries Lafayette flagship, which is officially set to open in March, the official noted.

Charlotte Tilbury’s Party Takeover: 5 looks to master for the holiday season

It’s time to shine…

Christmas is the perfect opportunity to up the ante, so we asked celebrity make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury to create five stand out looks especially for Marie Claire. Prepare to wow.

Glitter Ball

Whether you want high-octane glitz or just a hint of sparkle, this look is playful, easy-to-do and will take your party look from zero to hero. ‘Start off with a flawless canvas,’ says make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury. Here, she used her Magic Away Concealer, £24   and Light Wonder Foundation, £32. You’ll also want to apply concealer to your lids and under-eye area to give the glitter something to adhere to,’ adds Tilbury who shared her exclusive pro tips on this shoot.

‘Then, pat the loose, chunky flecks over the top with your ring finger, working fast, before they sets. Finish with one coat of mascara, applied just at the roots, to keep it looking modern.’ Try  Sleek Glitterfest Biodegradable Glitter in Silver, £5.49, and Yves Saint Laurent The Curler Mascara in Black, £26.

Guilty Secrets

Chocolate and gold: The winning make-up combination for every skin tone. But the festive season gives us license to be more adventurous, so take yourself out of your beauty comfort zone and use metallics to pump up the drama. You’ll need to start with a glossy complexion, so give dull skin a light-bulb moment with Charlotte Tilbury’s Bar of Gold Palette, £49, which delivers a metallic sheen to cheekbones, nose and cupid’s bow.

For sculpted eyes, sweep Chanel’s Longwear Powder Eyeshadow in Chocolate Brown, £26, over lids before dabbing sparkly Tom Ford’s Shadow Extreme in TFX2 Gold, £30, onto the inner corners. ‘The key is to blend, blend, blend with a make-up brush so the two tones meld seamlessly,’ says Tilbury. To enhance the mouth, she swiped her Matte Revolution Lipstick in Birkin Brown, £24, onto model Veridiana’s lips.

Mad About Matte

Whatever else you wear, red lipstick will have you party-ready in seconds. This season’s top lip tip? Focus on the finish. Shiny can look OTT, but a velvety matte stamp is both chic and cool. Plus it’s all the more doable now that lipstick formulas are flexible and soft, rather than chalky and dense. ‘If you want to re-shape and re-size your lips and Cupid’s Bow, stencil first with a “stealth liner”,’ says Tilbury.

‘Trace the natural outline of your lips, correct any asymmetrical unevenness, then enhance the roundness by going slightly outside the lip line.’ Try Tilbury’s Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Kiss n Tell, £16, and then press Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipstick in Tell Laura, £24, straight from the bullet onto your mouth.

Photography by Jason Hetherington

Back to Black

Smoky eyes are elegant, mysterious and face lifting but can also be unnecessarily complicated and time-consuming to create. Tilbury’s technique involves just two products. Start off with a cream base such as BareMinerals’ Gen Nude Eyeshadow + Primer in Exposed, £19 to encourage anything you apply on top to stay put.

Then, use a small brush to create a chunky, feline shaped line of black shadow and sweep it down on to the lower lashline. Add a slick of black eyeliner for more intensity. We love Charlotte Tilbury’s Smoke shade from The Sophisticate Palette, £39, and the Classic Eye Pencil in Audrey, £16 – both are dark and matte. Mascara (try Legendary Lashes Volume 2, £25), brushed up brows, nude blush and flushed lips are just dressy enough.

Photography by Jason Hetherington

Pink Power

Christmas is a time to get creative with colour but, instead of a rainbow palette, just stick to one shade. Tilbury chose millennial pink – unexpected, yes, but boy does it work. Step one: create a sheer makeup base. ‘I like to massage the skin with my Magic Cream, £70, to stimulate lymphatic drainage and boost circulation,’ she says.

Next up is a sweep of the Hollywood Beauty Light Wand, £29, over the tops of cheekbones, the tip of the nose and the inner corner of the eyes. ‘It gives this amazing spotlight sheen,’ says Tilbury. Add a light wash of rosy-coloured cream shadow to your lids – try Givenchy Ombre Couture Cream Eyeshadow 16H Hold Waterproof in Rose Illusion, £20. Then apply Charlotte Tilbury Kissing Lipsticks in Velvet Underground, £24. Skip mascara, this look is impactful and fresher without it.

This Man Started a Business Hanging Holiday Lights and Made $138K in Year 3

When you have a name like Josh Trees and your job is hanging holiday lights, you have to be prepared for the inevitable question: Is that actually your name?

Trees — yes, that’s his real name — started his business, We Hang Christmas Lights, in 1997, decorating homes, businesses and assorted branched greenery in Temecula, California.

But Trees definitely gets the last (jolly) laugh.

“When we first started doing this, people were like, ‘Oh, that’s a cute little business,’” says the 43-year-old. “We were like, ‘Yeah, cute,’ —  you don’t realize people are paying us $ 3,500 to put lights up on their houses.

“By my third year, I was hitting a net profit of right around $ 138,000.”

Now Trees crisscrosses the country with strands of lights and a tiny house to teach others how they can build their own businesses hanging twinkling bulbs.

On the First Day of Christmas Lighting

Trees’ classes help pass on knowledge that he has accumulated throughout his career, such as purchasing lights from wholesale vendors who offer discounts for bulk purchases and making your own extension cords. Aileen Perilla/The Penny Hoarder

Ah, the fond memories of hauling out last year’s box of lights to add some holiday cheer to the humble abode. Haphazardly arrange the lights around the front stoop, throw a wreath on the door and voilá!

But if you’re starting a business hanging lights, that simplified recollection can lead to costly errors, according to Trees. And he should know, because he had the same idea.

“We were making mistakes on everything — we were just a bunch of guys thinking, ‘Hey, this is going to be easy,’” Trees says. “We were hanging other people’s lights — that’s a huge no-no.… The second stage was hanging the crummy lights from retailers.

“I’m surprised I made it through the first couple years.”

By the third year, Trees had moved onto purchasing lights from wholesale vendors, which offered discounts for bulk purchases. He was also buying commercial-grade strands so that when one bulb went out, they didn’t all go out.

But Trees says his biggest mistake had nothing to do with lights — it was underbidding jobs.

I got into it in the first year…  and I didn’t make any money — probably lost money,” Trees says. “I was charging $ 150 for jobs that should have been $ 850.

“I bid a job for $ 3,500 that should have literally been $ 35,000. It was horrible.”

Enlightening Business Strategies

Lisa Pinkney, 56, works for her sister’s landscape business Daylily Landscaping in Washington D.C. “I wanted to learn how to do things the right way,” said Pinkney, who flew down with her sister to attend one of Trees’ classes. Aileen Perilla/The Penny Hoarder

Trees’ students echo his refrain, noting that learning from other professionals early on can help transform a business idea into a profitable enterprise — and with a lot fewer mistakes along the way.

One of Trees’ early students was Jeff Krall, owner of American Holiday Lights in Woodridge, Illinois. In 2008, Krall attended an individual training session, which Trees conducted before he started traveling the country to teach classes.

“Josh helped me get it started,” says Krall, 53. “Everything from how to hang the lights on the rooflines… making our own extension cords, how to wrap the trees.

“It would take someone… two or three years to learn how to do it correctly, whereas Josh, in two or three days, he tells them how to do everything.”

In his first season of business, Krall estimates he had 30 clients. Now he manages 25 to 35 employees who light 35 to 40 houses a day during the season, at an average price of $ 1,400 to $ 1,500 per house.

However, those visions of sugarplums and dollar signs dancing in your head might not be in your immediate future — or at least not the first season.

Last year, Lucas Pulvermacher decided to add a light-hanging business to his busy lawn care enterprise near Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

“My first year was tricky because I had to have an inventory of the lights. That’s a fairly large cost — and also the ladder, equipment, safety stuff like that,” says Pulvermacher, who recently turned 16. “I’d say we came out about even.”

Pulvermacher says his Lucas Lights lit three houses and two businesses after launching in mid-November last year — “It was hard because we started so late.”

After taking Trees’ class this year to learn marketing and sales strategies, Pulvermacher invested in professionally designed materials, including a logo.

His goal is to tackle 10 houses this year and then double that number by 2019 — when he has his driver’s license.

Beyond Christmas Lights

Jayson Nelson and John Gereg stand on either side of Connor Graham, president of We Hang Christmas Lights, as they learn how to make their own extension cords. Aileen Perilla/The Penny Hoarder

One of the cool things about those twinkling lights is that they still work after Jan. 1. That means there’s more business after the wintry holiday season.

“A lot of the guys we work with, they do wedding lights, event lights, party lights and backyard lighting, that sort of thing, and a lot also do landscape lighting,” says Trees, who estimates that light installations for weddings bring in $ 1,800 on average but can go as high as $ 7,000.

Krall, who also owns a roofing business, hangs lights all year round for backyard weddings, Diwali festival of lights celebrations and Halloween parties — “but the majority of what we do is Christmas,” he notes.

Holiday Gigs

Anthony Dixon, from Long Island, N.Y., holds a string of lights as Dominick Sacca learns how to properly staple them on the tiny house. Aileen Perilla/The Penny Hoarder

So let’s say you’re not ready to start your own business but being outside hanging lights sounds like a better gig than working a seasonal retail job.

Considering how hot the job market is, you might be in luck.

Krall notes that the toughest part of his business is finding good, reliable help.

“We got creative this year, so we align ourselves with other companies out there that are seasonal, like landscapers or pool companies,” Krall says. “When they’re laying off, we’re actively developing relationships.”

Trees recommends that installers offer tiered bonus pay, adding an extra $ 1 per hour each week to incentivize continued attendance as the season winds down — particularly in January when companies have to take down the lights.

Stephen Ogles, 32, learns how to wrap Christmas lights around a tree. Ogles, who owns a roof cleaning business in Lake City, Fla., came to learn how to hang lights during the slower winter months. Aileen Perilla/The Penny Hoarder

Helpers can typically make anywhere from between… $ 13 at the low end to about $ 20 at the high end — and that’s before bonuses,” Trees says. “When you find somebody that’s good, it’s key that you keep those people, because it’s temporary, and they know it’s temporary.”

For people interested in finding holiday lighting jobs in their area, Trees suggests checking places like Craigslist, Indeed and the We Hang Christmas Lights site, which includes a directory of light installers that’s searchable by zip code — just mention your interest in a job when you fill out the online form.

Trees has found that these holiday gigs are best suited for people who work warm-weather jobs in roofing, tree trimming and window washing. All of which have at least one trait in common — no fear of heights.

And yes, the money is nice, but Krall and Pulvermacher agree that the best part of hanging bulbs is the way their customers’ faces light up when they see the finished product.

“Everybody’s in a really good mood around Christmas time,” says Krall.

Pulvermacher adds: “It’s just kind of a cozy feeling when you see a house all lit up.”

Misty Copeland Talks Mentoring, The ‘Nutcracker’ & Her Unconventional Holiday Tradition

Source: Shamika Sanders / @Shamika_Sanders

It’s a dream come true for Misty Copeland to star in the Disney adaptation Nutcracker And The Four Realms. Misty, who danced in the classic ballet when she was 13, calls it a “full circle” moment. She is the brown ballerina she had always hoped to see.

We caught up with the principal dancer and spoke to her about her pivotal role in the film, the mentee who reminds her of herself and her unconventional holiday tradition with her husband.

“There’s a brown ballerina in the nutcracker film and that’s going to live on forever,” she said during a candid chat at a Nutcracker And The Four Realms pop-up in NYC. “People can look at that and be like, that’s what a ballerina looks like.”

Misty’s character, the Ballerina, was added into the film to incorporate the integral dance sequence through which we learn about the four realms.

“It’s Keira Knightley and Mackenzie Foy and they’re all sitting there watching me perform a ballet within the movie and through my movement of the ballet, I’m telling the stories of the realms. So, you know, the land of the sweets and the flowers and the snow. And then there’s like the dark fourth realm,” she explained. “It’s a small part of the film, but it links everything together and then there’s like a fun little bit that we have at the end of the credits.”

Source: Shamika Sanders / @Shamika_Sanders

The Nutcracker is a tradition among many families and Misty knows a thing or two about that since she’s created her own traditions over the years.

“I’ve always been someone that really enjoyed the holidays. When I first moved to New York City, everyone would come to my place for Thanksgiving and Christmas and like I would make everything,” she gushed.

Misty’s holiday tradition looks a little different these days. “My holiday traditions with my husband is, ‘Let’s get out of the city.’ I don’t want to be in the snow or the cold. We’re going to the beach and that’s become our tradition.”

Source: Shamika Sanders / @Shamika_Sanders

Misty currently mentors a Black girl at the American Ballet Theater.

“Erica Loll, she’s like my little baby sister. It’s amazing to have someone with me, I was alone for so long. It’s incredible to be able to lend my experiences and help to guide this next generation and hopefully not have the same troubles that I had or make the same mistakes or just know how to navigate,” she shared.

“We actually met when she was 11-years-old and I’ve been mentoring her on and off since then and now she’s in the company. Her locker next to me.”

Misty grew up to be an iconic dancer, but she wasn’t always as confident.

“She is so much more confident than I was at that age and I tell her that all the time. Being one of six kids and being such an introvert and not really being nurtured in a way that like I didn’t have communication skills. I was just like this weird little thing that like kind of was stunted in my growth,” she admitted. “And then I went into the ballet world and it was like I just started to blossom.”

Source: Shamika Sanders / @Shamika_Sanders

Misty continues to kick down walls and break barriers as a Black ballerina.

“All you can do is wake up, work hard and stay grounded and keep people around you trust and love you and just keep living like we’re all people, humans more or better than anyone else. And it’s just like, I’m grateful to have these opportunities.

See Nutcracker And The Four Realms in theaters November 2.

Target Offers Two-Day Shipping With No Minimums For Holiday

(AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) — Target will be offering for the first time two-day shipping with no minimum purchase this holiday, raising the stakes in the delivery wars during the busiest shopping season of the year.

The offer, announced Tuesday, will start Nov. 1 and end Dec. 22. It’s part of the retailer’s overall strategy to bolster its delivery services from curbside pickup to same-day delivery for customers as it competes with such rivals as Walmart and online leader Amazon.

The move comes as the Minneapolis-based retailer has been reporting strong sales growth both at stores and online, helped in part by its online delivery services as well as its efforts to remodel stores.

“Our approach this holiday is to make it easier for our guests,” Brian Cornell, CEO of Target told reporters at a holiday briefing in Manhattan.

With last year’s $ 550 million acquisition of delivery service Shipt, Target has expanded its same-day delivery of groceries and other merchandise to 200 markets, up from 160 markets in August. It’s also expanding its curbside pickup service to nearly 1,000 stores by the end of this month, ahead of schedule.

Target has been a laggard when it comes to two-day delivery.

In January 2017, Walmart began offering two-day shipping for online purchases over $ 35 on millions of frequently purchased items like household essentials. And with its annual Prime membership of $ 119, Amazon customers receive two-day shipping, along with other perks like movie and music streaming services.

In previous holiday seasons, Target had waived the shipping fee and offered free shipping but there was no time frame. In March, it announced two-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items for shoppers who spend $ 35 or more.
