Ellen DeGeneres Says She Wants Kevin Hart to Be the Oscars Host Despite Homophobic Comments

Ellen DeGeneres said she wants Kevin Hart to be the host of the 2019 Academy Awards – despite the revelation of homophobic comments that he posted on social media.

The Ellen Show host, one of the first openly lesbian Hollywood stars, announced her support for Hart after a candid interview on her talk show in which he apologized again for the remarks.

“I believe in forgiveness. I believe in second chances. And I believe in Kevin Hart,” DeGeneres wrote on Twitter Friday.

During the interview – set to air Friday – Hart said that when homophobic slurs and jokes he had made “a decade ago” resurfaced in December, when it was announced he would be hosting the Oscars, he was unwilling to apologize because he had already “addressed” his past homophobia.

In the end, he stood down and later apologized again for his comments – which included saying in 2010 that one of his biggest fears was his son growing up to be gay. Some of his now-deleted homophobic tweets were posted in 2011, according to BuzzFeed News.

“When it happened,” he said of his comments resurfacing, “my first thought is, I’m going to ignore it because it’s ten years old. This is stuff I’ve addressed, I’ve talked about this. This isn’t new,” he said. “I’ve apologized for it.”

He went on, “I’ve taken 10 years to put that apology to work … I look at life through a different lens, and because of that I live it a different way … I don’t joke like that any more. Because that was wrong.”

“I know you’re not that guy, because I know you,” said Ellen, after a long period where she allowed Hart to talk uninterrupted. “The night will be about you, and it should be about you, and you should host the Oscars.”

A source told People magazine on Thursday that the Academy was considering asking Hart back after the controversy.

But some Twitter users were not convinced. “It’s depressing that Ellen’s enthusiasm for Hart hosting the Oscars … led her to contribute to a narrative that Hart is the victim of “haters” & “trolls” out to “destroy” him,” said Adam Vary, a journalist for BuzzFeed and one of the Twitter users who highlighted Hart’s homophobia when it was first announced he would be hosting the Oscars.

“LGBT people who love the Oscars were legitimately startled to see just how harsh his words were,” Vary said.

Kevin Hart’s Homophobic Tweets May Threaten Oscar Gig

NEW YORK (AP) — Kevin Hart’s response to criticism over earlier homophobic tweets has further inflamed the backlash to the newly minted Oscar host.

On Thursday, Hart wrote on Instagram that critics should “stop being negative” after years-old tweets surfaced in which he used homophobic slurs. In an accompanying video, a shirtless Hart said he wasn’t going to “let the craziness frustrate me.” Hart said he “loves everybody.”

The gay media watchdog group GLAAD said it has reached out to Oscars broadcaster ABC, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and Hart’s management to “discuss Kevin’s anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and record.”

In a 2010 stand-up special, Hart said “if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will.”

The film academy on Tuesday announced Hart as host to its February ceremony. A representative for the academy didn’t respond to messages Thursday.

Kevin Hart released a truly awful statement about his homophobic tweets

TwitterFacebook

We live in the golden age of bad non-apologies, but Kevin Hart’s response to recent backlash over resurfaced homophobic jokes might take the cake.

“Stop looking for reasons to be negative… Stop searching for reasons to be angry,” Hart wrote in his Instagram, along with a grainy video of him shirtless expressing the same sentiments.

For those playing catch up: On Wednesday, Hart was announced as the host of the 2019 Oscars. Within hours, concerns were raised online that resurfaced a litany of (now-deleted) tweets.

One described how, if he ever saw his son playing with his daughter’s doll house, “I’m going 2 break it over his head and say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.'” Others included him using homophobic slurs against other people. Read more…

Should the Oscars Fire Host Kevin Hart Over His Homophobic Jokes?

Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast

Hosting the Academy Awards is an infamously thankless gig, exposing the emcee to intense scrutiny from the culturati and critics, typically with little to gain professionally in exchange. It’s gotten so bad that earlier this week, in response to the fact that dozens of celebrities had turned down the Academy’s requests to preside over this year’s ceremony, The Hollywood Reporter proclaimed hosting the Oscars “the least wanted job in Hollywood.”

That was, of course, mere hours before the Academy announced that comedian Kevin Hart had taken the job.

Hart actually wanted the job very much, and has been on record saying as much over the years. He announced that he was “blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time” when he shared the news on Instagram. And now that he’s gotten it, he’s already witnessing part of the aforementioned reality of the gig: the scrutiny.

Did Marlo Hampton’s Homophobic Slur Doom Her From Getting ‘RHOA’ Peach? [Video]

(Marlo Hampton Instagram)

If you’re a fan of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” you’re no doubt aware of the shows intense popularity. If our math is correct, it just started its 11th season on Sunday evening past.

Over the course of the show’s reign, several ladies have come and gone and even come back (Hello NeNe, Sheree). Interestingly there’s one cast member who’s been consistently hanging around since season 4, but can’t get any love as a full-timer. That would be Marlo Hampton.

So, you might ask yourself, why can’t Marlo get a peach? Look at all the time she’s put in? What more does she have to do? Well, according to a report via theJasmineBrand, the chances of her becoming an official cast member are pretty slim. Accordig to sources, it was an inflammatory comment that Hampton made several seasons ago that have haunted her ever since. The story goes that when Marlo used the word f*gg*t on the show, it supposedly sealed her fate of never getting a permanent spot.

It was back in 2012 when Hampton spouted the word when she and former cast member, Sheree Whitfield, were in each other’s faces during their South Africa trip. In the midst of arguing over why Marlo WASN’T invited by Sheree to a party, hhere’s what came out of Hampton’s mouth …

“And any way, that’s why you don’t have a man, Go and hang with them f*gg*ts.”

Watch:

Needless to say, the man who oversees the show, and is openly gay, BRAVO executive Andy Cohen (pictured directly above), was allegedly livid about it, per sources. Not that it helped, but Marlo did apologize on her website.

“I would like to offer from the bottom of my heart the fullest and most heartfelt apology for my recent use of an anti-gay slur. When I used this word, I was not mindful of the demeaning connotation that this has in the gay community. My speech was irresponsible, thoughtless and said with the intention of conveying anger rather than as a statement on my feelings towards the gay community as a whole…I applaud and admire this community for their triumph over a sometimes harsh, mean spirited society that discriminates and even violently attacks those who are different. These are obstacles that I relate to and that I have been inspired by them to overcome. I celebrate this community and am saddened by any indication otherwise, that my actions may have caused…”

The article also notes that Marlo apologized on that season’s reunion show for using the word, but it didn’t make any difference.

“Not only was Andy upset, but it was damaging with the LGBTQ viewers and execs at the network,” a source reportedly said.

But hey, the bottom line is Marlo Hampton is still very much associated with the show while Andy keeps exacting his revenge.

Thoughts?
