Snoop explained to the Tom Joyner Morning Show crew, “Some of my music has led people to darkness, so I felt like it was time to lead people to the light considering that I can see the light now. And I understand you can’t match hate with hate, you have to match hate with love.”

DVF Awards Honor Sonia Sotomayor, Misty Copeland and More

Photo Credit: BFA for DVF Awards

It was the kind of room, the kind of evening really, that could induce “pinch me” moments at every turn.

In a long, fire engine red dress model Duckie Thot was trying to find just the right pose for the photo booth. Principal ballerina Misty Copeland embraced fellow American Ballet Theater dancer Isabella Boylston with a glee reminiscent of “omg, I haven’t seen you in forever!” Trailblazers like feminist icon Gloria Steinem and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor sat casually among Hollywood stars and journalists.

Steinem, in reflecting on her decades long work fighting for women, told The Daily Beast, “I can’t imagine anything more interesting, more rewarding, more angering, more worthwhile.” Discussing the current #MeToo moment and intergenerational work required for lasting change she said, “I’m always hopeful because I remember when it was worse, that’s one of the good things about being older and fortunately I work with women who well understand that it should be better, have energy and anger and together we make a movement.”

Colin Kaepernick Wins Amnesty International’s Highest Honor

Colin Kaepernick may not have a job on the football field, but much of the world is still cheering for him.

Amnesty International, the global human rights organization, gave Kaepernick its highest honor — the 2018 Ambassador of Conscience Award — in Amsterdam on Saturday. Past winners of the award, which “celebrates individuals and groups who speak out for justice,” include former South Africa president Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, the education activist from Pakistan who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban, and rock group U2.

The organization recognized Kaepernick for his protest against police violence: his action, kneeling during the national anthem before NFL games, sparked a movement replicated across America and the world, starting a debate about free speech and patriotism that was inflamed by the President of the United States, one of Kaepernick’s most relentless critics.

“When high-profile people choose to take a stand for human rights, it emboldens others,” says Augusta Quiney, Amnesty International’s director of Art for Amnesty, a program that works with artists and entertainers on human rights activism. “For us, this is an opportunity to be on the right side of history.”

“This is an award I share with all of the countless people throughout the world combating the human rights violations of police officers, and their uses of oppressive and excessive force,” Kaepernick said in statement released by Amnesty International. “To quote Malcolm X, when he said that he, ‘will join in with anyone — I don’t care what color you are — as long as you want to change this miserable condition that exists on this earth,’ I am here to join with you all in this battle against police violence.

“While taking a knee is a physical display that challenges the merits of who is excluded from the notion of freedom, liberty, and justice for all, the protest is also rooted in a convergence of my moralistic beliefs, and my love for the people,” said Kaepernick. His former teammate Eric Reid, who knelt in solidarity with Kaepernick during the anthem — and remains unsigned as a free agent this NFL offseason — presented Kaepernick with the award.

Quiney points out that this summer marks the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where U.S. track stars John Carlos and Tommy Smith raised a fist on the medals stand to protest Civil Rights abuses in America. Activist athletes like Carlos, Smith, and Muhammad Ali, who refused to serve in Vietnam and spoke out against the war there, faced consequences for their actions: Carlos and Smith were vilified and received death threats, Ali was stripped of his titles and lost the prime earning years of his career.

Kaepernick is a successor to the 1960s activist athletes, says Quiney. Despite superior credentials to many quarterbacks signed to contracts by NFL teams, Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season. This month, the Seattle Seahawks reportedly cancelled a workout with Kaepernick when he refused to say whether he’d continue to kneel during the anthem.

The protests have likely cost Kaepernick his playing career. He has filed a collusion suit against the NFL, and this week NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was deposed in the case.

Kaepernick has received several honors for his stance. In November Sports Illustrated named Kaepernick winner of the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award, and in December, the ACLU gave him the Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award. Now, with Amnesty International, a global group has recognized Kaepernick.

“People have a choice in their everyday lives whether to act on their conscience, or carry on as usual,” says Quiney. “We rely on people like Colin, when they feel like they simply cannot be silenced, to speak out and inspire huge numbers of people, despite the professional and personal risks.”

Halle Berry, Quincy Jones Honor Departing Academy Prez Cheryl Boone Isaacs

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Quincy Jones, Halle Berry, Kobe Bryant and Common were among the stars paying tribute to former film academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs at the sixth annual Icon Mann pre-Oscar dinner.

Common dropped a verse from his song “The Day Women Took Over” in her honor.

Quincy Jones called her “my beloved baby sister from another mister.” And Halle Berry said her pioneering success made her proud to be a black woman.

Isaacs, the former film academy president who spearheaded the organization’s radical inclusivity efforts after #OscarsSoWhite, was celebrated Tuesday at Icon Mann’s sixth annual pre-Oscar dinner.

The organization founded to honor and support black men presented its inaugural Legacy Award to a woman, lauding Boone Isaacs’ decades of leadership and history of opening doors for people of color.

“Her impact on this business will be felt for many years to come,” Jones said.

They lauded her decades of leadership in entertainment and her legacy of bringing more diversity to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as she received the inaugural Legacy Award Tuesday at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

Common shared how he met Boone Isaacs in 2015, the first year of the all-white slate of acting nominees that inspired the “Oscars so white” online protest and criticism of the academy’s diversity. He and John Legend were campaigning for their song “Glory” from the film “Selma” — which would go on to win the Academy Award — when they got to see Boone Isaacs at work.

“I saw what Cheryl was trying to do, and that was move things forward,” Common said. “I saw a real mission and a real plan… And thank you for doing that, because I always felt like the more our children get to see black people in these positions, in leadership or in films, then they’ll know that they can be like (“Black Panther” costume designer) Ruth Carter or (Oscar-nominated screenwriter) Dee Rees.”

Berry, who was the first black woman to win the best actress Oscar, noted that Boone Isaacs had scored two such firsts: She was the first black woman to run a major studio publicity department and the first African-American to serve as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

“I’m so proud to be a black woman when black women like you are leading organizations like the academy,” Berry said. “All the work you did while you were there has changed the way the academy runs.”

This year’s Oscar nominations include a few firsts as well: Rachel Morrison became the first woman to be nominated for cinematography in the academy’s 90-year history, and “Mudbound” writer-director Dee Rees, who was a guest at Tuesday’s dinner, is the first black woman to be nominated for adapted screenplay.

Cedric the Entertainer hosted Tuesday’s dinner at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, where guests included Kobe Bryant, Nia Long, Terry Crews, Dennis Haysbert and Oscar nominee Yance Ford, who directed the documentary “Strong Island.”

Icon Mann founder Tamara Houston announced the establishment of two University of Southern California scholarships in honor of Boone Isaacs and her brother and fellow marketing executive, Ashley Boone.

As Boone Isaacs accepted her award, she implored guests to recognize and employ the power of community.

“We have power, and our power is in our connectedness, our community,” she said. “We all must work together and combine our talents and show all of Hollywood and show America and the world that we have arrived. We are here. Things are changing and we are going to march on.”

The celebrity-studded guest list included actors Nia Long, Terry Crews and Dennis Haysbert.

The Slave Behind Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Recipe to Receive New Honor

Jack Daniel's

The slave who helped craft Jack Daniel’s, the most successful American whiskey of all time, is finally getting his due recognition.

(Image: Pixabay)

Although Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel is credited with inventing Jack Daniel’s in the 19th century, the company revealed last year that Daniel learned the trade of whiskey making from a slave named Nathan “Uncle Nearest” Green. (Green’s nickname is often incorrectly misspelled as “Nearis.”) Daniel then went on to open the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey distillery in 1875, where Green worked as the master distiller until at least 1881.

New York Times best-selling author Fawn Weaver says she discovered the story of Green from an article published by The New York Times that moved her to dig more into his history. That’s when she learned that Green was not the only African American involved in the process of distilling Jack Daniel’s whiskey. In fact, generations of Green’s descendants worked together with the Daniel family to make the iconic whiskey decades later. Some of Green’s offspring still work in the whiskey industry today.

Now, Weaver will dedicate a book, memorial park, street naming, and museum to pay tribute to Green’s legacy. She also plans to set up a college scholarship fund for his descendants.

“When Fawn contacted us, we were excited to hear that someone was bringing to light all of this information about our family,” said Mitchell Green, a relative of Green, in a statement. “Until now, only our family and a small community were aware of the impact our ancestor had on the Tennessee whiskey industry.”

According to a press release, Weaver and her husband have purchased the farm where the original Jack Daniel’s Distillery was located and have set up The Nearest Green Foundation to ensure that Green’s story “will never again be forgotten.”

“Already in the works are artifacts being placed on permanent loan to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.; plans for a museum in Lynchburg dedicated to the history of Tennessee whiskey; the renaming of a street to Nearest Green Way; the Nearest Green Memorial Park in Lynchburg; a book scheduled for completion this year; an improvement project at Highview Cemetery in Lynchburg, where Green is believed to have been buried; and a scholarship fund to benefit his direct descendants. The scholarship’s first recipients are Matthew McGilberry and Marcus Butler, both attending college this fall,” reads the press release.

“To correct the record, Weaver has written a new foreword and preface for Jack Daniel’s official biography, “Jack Daniel’s Legacy,” which will be republished this month in honor of the 50th anniversary of its original release.”

To top it off, Weaver will release a handcrafted, ultra-premium Tennessee whiskey called Uncle Nearest 1856 later this month.

“When I met with the descendants of George Green, the son most known for helping his father, Nearest, and Jack Daniel in the whiskey business, I asked them what they thought was the best way to honor Nearest, said Fawn. “Their response was, ‘No one owes us anything. We know that. But putting his name on a bottle, letting people know what he did, would be great.’”

BEAUTY DEAL UPDATE:

Honor Roll Student Banned From Graduation Because Of This Shirt

A senior at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, North Carolina was recently suspended for wearing a shirt that showed her collarbones.

Summer, an honor roll student with a 4.4 GPA, told NBC Charlotte that she was sitting in the cafeteria last week when the school’s principal asked her to put on a jacket because her shirt went against the school’s dress code. According to NBC Charlotte, Summer’s shirt partially showed her shoulders and exposed her back.

Although Summer reportedly told her principal she thought her shirt was “fine” to wear at school, she complied with the principal’s request and put on a jacket. Unfortunately, the principal was still not satisfied and asked Summer to change her outfit all together.

“I completely understand why a dress code is put into place but I feel like after I put on that jacket it should have been subdued,” Summer told NBC Charlotte.

Watch the full news clip of Summer’s story below.

Instead of accompanying the principal to change her clothes, Summer asked the principal to call her mother. According to NBC Charlotte, Summer has had “a number of issues” with her principal over the past four years, and because of this, Summer’s mother has asked the school to call her before taking any disciplinary action against her daughter. The principal was unable to reach Summer’s mother, so Summer went about her day.

Later, during a school assembly, the principal came in with a school security guard and asked everyone to leave except Summer.

“[The security guard] was within five feet of me, he had his hand on his gun,” Summer said. “[The principal] said ‘I’m gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you.”

Right before the security guard could handcuff the high school senior, Summer’s mother called.

Thankfully, Summer was not arrested but Yahoo reported she was given a 10-day suspension from school and was banned from all senior activities including high school graduation. According to the letter sent home to Summer’s mom, the high school senior was suspended for “insubordination.”

Summer told NBC Charlotte that she thinks the principal is still considering expelling her.

“It’s just sad because I worked so hard for four years to walk across that stage,” she said. “We have drug dealers walking across that stage, we have sex offenders walking across that stage and then the 4.4 student who showed her shoulders can’t.”

Maid of honor Katie Godby ― a.k.a. Slim Katie ― is the real deal.

At her sister Jess’s wedding to Trevor Hykes on Saturday in Alpharetta, Georgia, Katie brought down the house with a five-minute musical toast set to the tune of Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady.”

Katie spent two months tailoring the lyrics to fit the couple’s love story and rehearsing the rap, according to ABC News.

“For [Jess’s] bachelorette, we went to Nashville and did karaoke and did ‘Slim Shady’ together, so I knew that was the one to do for the wedding,” she said.

Naturally, the bride and groom loved the surprise speech.

Maid Of Honor Makes Wedding Unforgettable (But Not In A Good Way)

Brian and Jennifer Butler will never forget their wedding day ― though they’d probably like to.

That because Amanda Willis, Jennifer’s Maid of Honor, took away the focus from the bride after getting arrested for numerous charges including larceny, battery, grand theft of a motor vehicle, and violation of probation.

The Butlers, of Charlotte County, Florida, say that Willis behaved herself during their wedding. It was during the cake ceremony and first dance that she allegedly turned into a Maid of Dishonor.

The bride told WBBH TV that she saw Willis drink an entire bottle of Fireball by herself.

“She was drunk within 20 minutes to half an hour,” Jennifer Butler told the station.

It was then that this “Bridesmaidzilla” allegedly set a standard that will be hard for future inappropriate Wedding Party members to top.

First, Willis allegedly took the groom’s car keys from his pocket and attempted to drive away.

Willis almost ran him over while driving away, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by The Huffington Post. She drove towards the parking lot while the groom was hanging out the passenger side door. He managed to stop the car by grabbing the emergency brake.

Other guests wrestled Willis out of the car and back into the reception.

“She went back inside…grabbed up the big bottle of Captain Morgan and just guzzled it,” Jennifer Butler told WBBH TV.

Best man Robert Templeton told police he tried to calm down Willis, but she struck him in the head.

Deputies were called to the scene and took Willis into custody. On the way to the Charlotte County Jail, Willis allegedly banged her head against the divider in the squad car, according to the police report.

When the squad car arrived at the jail. police said Willis claimed to be having an asthma attack and lay down in the back of the car, shaking as if she were having a seizure.

She was then taken to a local hospital where she allegedly exposed herself to deputies and assaulted two EMTs, one of whom was over 65. Oh, and she kicked over a bedpan, according to the report.

Willis was taken to the Charlotte County Jail after being charged with grand theft of an auto, two counts of battery on an officer or firefighter, battery on a person 65 years or older, intentional battery, petit larceny in the first degree and violation of parole.

She remains behind bars in lieu of $ 25,000 bail.

Oh, in case you’re wondering, Jennifer Butler said she no longer considers Willis to be her friend, according to WBBH TV.

6 Ways to Honor Dad on the Big Day

Calling all Father of the Bride fans! Planning a wedding? Don’t send dad running wildly for the hot dog buns.

Just in time for Father’s Day (which also happens to fall right in the middle of wedding season), here are a few ideas for honoring Dad on the big day. No need to stick to tradition – there are countless ways to include the father figure in your life that don’t include walking you down the aisle.

A Special Note in the Program
Including a sweet note to your dad in the wedding program will not only give him a precious memory he can physically hold onto, but it’s a great way to honor him on the big day. That special, public shout-out will give him some widespread recognition for the role he has played and the ways in which he has influenced you.

Father-Daughter Photos
It is common for couples to do first look photos before the wedding, so why not do a quick series of pre-ceremony photos with your dad? You can share some sweet one on one time together before you walk down the aisle and the photos will help you remember those precious moments forever. Pop a favorite photo in a frame for a great future Father’s Day gift!

Share a Secret Toast
Those final moments before the wedding can be nerve-wracking. An intimate toast with just your dad is a great way to calm your nerves before the ceremony begins and the festivities whisk you away.

Have Dad Officiate
The wedding officiant is such a meaningful role – why not give the honor to your dad? Having dad, or your future father-in-law, perform your wedding ceremony will surely make for an emotional and memorable day for all!

Invite Dad to do a Reading
If you’d prefer to have a rabbi, priest, minister or other loved one officiate, but still want your father involved in the ceremony, invite him do a reading. It can be a poem, a scripture, something he wrote or even a passage from a favorite childhood book. Your dad will still feel included without having to take on the responsibility of getting ordained and officiating.

Keep his Memory Close
Dad can’t be with you for the big day? Keep his memory close by tying a miniature framed photo to your bouquet, mentioning him in the program or playing his favorite song on the dance floor.

At the end of the day your dad (or the special father-figure in your life) wants the best for you and just seeing you glowing and happy throughout your big day, is enough to melt his heart.
