The Challenge Host TJ Lavin Injured in BMX Accident in Vegas, Says He’s ’41 Still Having Fun’

The Challenge host TJ Lavin seriously injured himself in a BMX accident in Las Vegas over the weekend.

The 41-year-old opened up about the stunt-gone-wrong in a series of videos posted to his Instagram Story Monday.

“So I overshot the jump,” Lavin told the camera revealing his bloody face and a huge scar on his forehead.

“The new jump that I’ve been working on all month, I finally hit it… and overshot it by a lot,” Lavin said from his hospital bed, adding, “Yeah… 41, still having fun.”

Lavin wasn’t too shaken up over his mishap as he could be seen laughing and joking about the accident.

RELATED: MTV’s TJ Lavin: Death Defying

He later revealed he didn’t suffer any life-threatening injuries. “So, in case you were wondering, the cat scan was negative. No brain problems and the knee came back no knee problems,” he said. “So, just a little stitches here and there no worries. Keeping it real.”

Soon after, Lavin was released from the hospital and took viewers back to the scene of the accident to explain what happened moment-by-moment.

He also admitted he wasn’t wearing a helmet.

A rep for MTV did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

This is not the first time Lavin nearly lost his life.

In July, Lavin revealed he almost drowned in Costa Rica while filming The Challenge in 2010, months after crashing on his BMX bike yet again.

Nothing makes him more happy than being on his BMX bike. I get a lot of people ask how I deal with all the accidents, crashes (today’s crash). It’s simple. He absolutely loves to ride. When he doesn’t ride he’s miserable. Unless you’re an athlete or the wife/partner of them, it can be really hard to understand their mentality. I used to ask him to find another hobby or passion for fear of him hurting himself for good. But BMX is his passion, even if he can’t ride professionally. It’s hard when your body doesn’t do what your heart and mind still want it to do. The joy of being able to still ride out weighs the risks, in his mind. So he has a few more stitches, scars, aches, pains and let’s not get into my constant bloody white sheets. I love what he loves and most importantly, I want him to be happy ❤#bmx #tjlavin #bmxwife #marriage #husbandandwife #couple #supporteachother #love #rideordie #hestheone

“I almost drowned out there. There’s a nasty undertow, and I went out into the ocean like nothing, like I was good, and I was like, no problem. I’m just going to go out here and go swimming,” Lavin said on Las Vegas radio show Flip The Strip.

“Before I knew it I was like 100 yards off the coast,” Lavin recalled.

Luckily, his friend was also in the water. “He was surfing and he grabbed his surfboard and rushed out there and got me,” Lavin explained on the radio show.

Using Your Rental Property to Host on Airbnb

Airbnb rentals are the latest trend in the accommodation market, offering a homier experience for a more competitive price than hotels. Many people also enjoy the authentic immersion into a city’s culture by residing among locals rather than with other tourists in a 5-star hotel or resort.

With Airbnb’s rise in popularity, many people have turned to hosting on Airbnb (renting out their residences) for extra income. If you’re a tenant and you’re thinking about becoming an Airbnb host, take a moment to consider some of the logistic and legal implications before diving in and listing your rental.

In this post, we’ll discuss how to get your landlord’s approval to list your property as well as some legal and contractual requirements relating to Airbnb rentals.

How to Get Your Landlord to Approve an Airbnb in Your Rental

According to Airbnb, many of their rentals are properties that are being leased by the hosts, so the rental agreement is similar to a typical subletting arrangement. In these cases, the host is the tenant on the lease and the guest booking the Airbnb is the subtenant.

Just like with a typical sublet arrangement, it’s a good idea for tenants to get permission from their landlord before listing their property as a potential Airbnb rental.

Hosting an Airbnb, similar to many other short-term rental agreements, can be risky for a landlord because they’ll be renting to someone they haven’t personally vetted. And with a higher turnover of renters moving in and out of an Airbnb, there can be a higher risk of property damage. Airbnb is not immune to troublesome renters causing disturbances and damage.

With those potential pain-points in mind, you can understand why some landlords are a little apprehensive when it comes to allowing their tenants to turn their property into an Airbnb. If you have your heart set on using your rental as an Airbnb, the best course of action is to have a thoughtful discussion with your landlord. But keep in mind, the final call is up to the person who owns the property.

If your landlord says no to you listing your rental on Airbnb, it’s not recommended that you do it behind your landlord’s back. If you’re required to get permission before subleasing and your landlord catches you doing it without their go-ahead, you could face eviction for violating your Lease Agreement.

A Legal Implication for Hosting an Airbnb Rental

Something you should keep in mind is that many municipalities have strict regulations on short-term rentals, and in some cities, short-term rentals altogether are illegal.

For instance, the city of San Francisco has imposed some of the strictest regulations to discourage people from hosting on Airbnb because of the decrease in vacancies and skyrocketing rent prices. In San Francisco, only full-time residents can host an Airbnb; a full-time resident, in this case, refers to someone who is renting out the home they also live in. The duration of the rental is also capped at 90 days, and all hosts must register with the city.

Before using your property as an Airbnb, you should check the regulations on short-term rentals in your municipality. The last thing you want is to get caught by authorities and fined.

Can Hosts Make Guests Sign a Rental Contract?

According to the Airbnb FAQ, hosts can require that guests sign a rental contract before allowing them to stay in the property. However, the hosts are required to inform guests prior to booking that they will have to sign a contract. The hosts are expected to disclose the terms of their agreement directly in their listing on the Airbnb website.

Airbnb also notes that they can’t help enforce any of the terms in your contract as the terms will only be binding on the hosts(s) and the guest(s).

If you are considering using a contract to set up some terms for your property, you might want to look at a Sublease Agreement to get an idea of the typical terms in a short-term rental.

Sublet terms usually address:

  • The sublease period (start and end date)
  • Which part of the premises is being sublet (a room, an apartment, one floor of a house, a whole house, etc.)
  • The cost of the rental

Things like renters’ insurance and move-in/move-out inspections are also addressed in sublease agreements, but they are not common in an Airbnb rental. Hosts have the option to add security deposits, but it should be noted that security deposits and damage claims are matters dealt with by Airbnb rather than between guests and hosts.

Preparing to Host on Airbnb

Being an Airbnb host requires some thought and planning; it’s not a situation where you should just hit the ground running.

Discuss how subletting or short-term rentals work with your landlord, do some research into your city’s regulations on short-term rentals, and (if all goes well) think about using a sublease contract with the guests you host in your rental.

President Trump Tells Tonight Show Host Jimmy Fallon to ‘Be a Man’ Over Hair-Mussing Episode

(WASHINGTON) — President Donald Trump is telling Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon to “be a man” and stop “whimpering” about the personal anguish he felt over the backlash he received after messing up Trump’s hair during a 2016 campaign appearance on Fallon’s late-night talk show.

Fallon recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he “made a mistake” on the Sept. 15, 2016, episode and would do it differently.

The comments didn’t appear to sit well with Trump.

The president tweeted Sunday: “.@jimmyfallon is now whimpering to all that he did the famous “hair show” with me (where he seriously messed up my hair), & that he would have now done it differently because it is said to have “humanized” me-he is taking heat. He called & said “monster ratings.” Be a man Jimmy!”

The U.S., Canada and Mexico Just Won a Joint Bid to Host the 2026 World Cup

(MOSCOW) — North America will host the 2026 World Cup after FIFA voters overwhelmingly opted for the financial and logistical certainty of a United States-led bid over a risky Moroccan proposal for the first 48-team tournament.

The soccer showpiece will return to the U.S. for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday.

The vote by football federations was public, in contrast to secrecy surrounding the ballot by FIFA’s elected board members for the 2018 and 2022 hosts, Russia and Qatar, in 2010.

The U.S. proposed staging 60 out of the 80 games in 2026, when 16 teams will be added to the finals, leaving Canada and Mexico with ten fixtures each.

‘Catfish’ Host Nev Schulman Already Has a History of Assault

MTV announced Thursday that it has halted production on Catfish, the MTV series co-hosted by Nev Schulman and Max Joseph, due to sexual misconduct allegations against Schulman by Ayissha Morgan, a woman who appeared on the series in 2015.

On May 12, Morgan posted a YouTube video where she alleged that Schulman harassed her during the production of her episode. Morgan, a lesbian, said Schulman (referred to by pseudonym “Jack” in the video) kept pushing her to reevaluate her sexuality so she would sleep with him. Two days later, Morgan posted another video alleging that a female production assistant got her drunk and took advantage of her. Morgan says she was subsequently invited to Schulman’s room, where he propositioned her again.

Schulman has denied the claims via his publicist, issuing the following statement: “The behavior described in this video did not happen and I’m fortunate that there are a number of former colleagues who were present during this time period who are willing to speak up with the truth. I have always been transparent about my life and would always take responsibility for my actions—but these claims are false.” Regardless, MTV has halted production until they can conduct their own investigation. In a statement sent to The Daily Beast, an MTV spokesperson said, “We take these allegations very seriously. We’re working with Critical Content, our third party production company, to conduct a thorough investigation, and we’ve put a pause on shooting until the investigation is completed.”

Jeopardy Host Alex Trebek Is Recovering From Surgery to Remove Blood Clots on His Brain

Alex Trebek has provided fans with an update on his health, and though he didn’t answer in the form of a question, he says his “prognosis is excellent.”

In a video shared via the Jeopardy YouTube page, Trebek revealed he had surgery over the holiday break to remove blood clots on his brain caused by a fall he suffered in October. Wearing a Jeopardy hat, Trebek appeared in good health and good spirits, saying, “I expect to be back in the studio taping more Jeopardy programs very, very soon.”

This is not the first time Trebek has suffered a health setback. In 2011, he tore his Achilles tendon while chasing a burglar from his hotel room, and in 2012, he suffered a mild heart attack. More recently, in 2015, he had to host while seated due to a full knee replacement.

However, none of these setbacks have deterred the longtime Jeopardy host, even if they occasionally cause postponements in taping the game show. Trebek has hosted Jeopardy for 33 years and counting, and just extended his contract through the 2019-2020 season (which will be the show’s 36th year on air). For $ 1,000, what is longevity?

HONOLULU — More than 75 keiki sprinted, jumped, dribbled and shot hoops with Los Angeles Clippers’ Sindarius Thornwell and Jawun Evans at the Kaiser Permanente Total Health Camp at Spalding Clubhouse recently. Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente Hawaii in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, the free fitness event was held to teach children about the importance of total health — caring for the body, mind and spirit.

Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii members ages 7 to 13 took turns rotating between different activity stations. Kaiser Permanente physical therapists taught students about injury prevention and warm-up exercises, health educators discussed the importance of healthy hydration and eating, and L.A. Clippers players guided participants in shooting and passing drills. Participants also received healthy snacks, mini basketballs and water bottles as a reminder to incorporate healthy habits into their lifestyle. photo of young boy dribbling a basketball

Issa Rae & Solange Host Fundraiser To Save Los Angeles Restaurant

Issa Rae and Solange Knowles used their high profiles to help out a struggling Los Angeles restaurateur who was facing a lawsuit which hastened a scramble to raise money to keep the establishment open. The stars hosted a celebrity fundraiser to help keep the doors of My 2 Cents open after the owner asked for a public offering of $ 130,000 to help with the legal bills.

Cassius Life wrote early last week about the Wind & Grind fundraiser Rae and Knowles planned to assist Alisa Reynolds, who was slammed with the lawsuits by what appears to be former backers according to a GoFundMe campaign aimed at staving off the costs. Rae and Knowles’ event kicked off last Friday (August 11) and they’ve appeared to have kept My 2 Cents in business although final numbers were not revealed. All funds raised went directly to My 2 Cents.

Kelly Rowland, Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Melina Matsoukas, and more were in attendance. Knowles’ Saint Heron Twitter page shared a bit of footage, which we’ve posted below and on the following pages. Beyonce was reportedly in the building as well but appears she kept herself away from the cameras.

Swift Victory! Jury Rules Former Radio Host Assaulted Taylor Swift During Meet and Greet, Awards Singer $1

After six days in court, a verdict has been reached in the Taylor Swift groping trial. After deliberating for several hours, a jury in a Denver courtroom ruled that former radio host David Mueller assaulted and battered Swift at a meet-and-greet photo session at the Pepsi Center in June 2013.

Swift is being awarded $ 1. Her mother Andrea and a member of her management team, Frank Bell, did not intentionally interfere with Mueller’s KYGO contract, the jury ruled.

After the verdict was read, Swift hugged her attorneys and her teary-eyed mother before mouthing the words “thank you” to the jury. Mueller and his team remained expressionless.

“I want to thank Judge William J. Martinez and the jury for their careful consideration, my attorneys Doug Baldridge, Danielle Foley, Jay Schaudies and Katie Wright for fighting for me and anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault, and especially anyone who offered their support throughout this four-year ordeal and two-year long trial process,” Swift said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

“I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves.”

The verdict came after an emotional day for Swift, who watched as Mueller’s lawyer, Gabe McFarland, argued before an eight-person jury that her allegations of assault destroyed his client’s career. When McFarland claimed that Mueller “is not the guy” who grabbed Swift’s backside, the 27-year-old star shook her head and mouthed the word, “Wow.”

She became even more emotional when McFarland turned his attention to the photo taken during the alleged incident, which has become something of a smoking gun in this case.

“Is that the face of someone who’s had someone grab their butt? Who is shocked?” he asked the jury. “There’s nothing in Taylor Swift’s face to suggest anything is wrong.” Meanwhile, Swift herself turned away from the public gallery towards her mother and dabbed tears from her eyes.

Swift regained her composure and leaned back in her chair as she listened to her attorney, Douglas Baldridge, deliver his statement, recalling Swift’s Aug. 10 testimony during which she said: “I am not going to allow you or your client to make me feel like this is my fault, because it isn’t.”

“To use Andrea Swift’s words, I don’t know whether to ‘vomit or cry’ when I see a member of the bar subscribe to that re-victimization,” continued Baldridge.

Swift’s lawyer also called Mueller’s case a “game of chicken” where “victims are prone to blink rather than relive the shame and humiliation of what took place.” He also noted the token $ 1 Swift is seeking in damages, “the single value of which is immeasurable to all women in this situation.”

“It means no means no, and it tells every woman that they will determine what is tolerable to their body,” he added.

It was a trial filled with passionate rhetoric, often by Swift herself. The 27-year-old took the stand on Thursday, testifying for about an hour against Mueller.

“It was a definite grab, very long grab,” Swift said in court. “It was long enough for me to be completely sure it was intentional.”

Afterwards, “a light switched off in my personality,” Swift said, and added that she “just looked at the floor. I couldn’t look at either of them , and I just said in monotone, ‘Thanks for coming.’”

When Swift was asked about how she reacted upon learning about Mueller’s termination, she said, “I didn’t have a reaction to a strange person I didn’t know losing his job…that was a product of his decisions, not mine.”

She continued: “I don’t know anything about Mr. Mueller. I don’t know him. I think what he did was despicable, horrifying, shocking, but I don’t know him at all.”

Swift’s mother Andrea also provided powerful testimony when she took the stand Wednesday, detailing how she “wanted to vomit and cry” after her daughter told her about the alleged groping.

“I knew there was something horribly wrong in that picture,” Andrea said of the photo with Mueller. “I know those eyes better than anybody. She was pulling away. She has that smile frozen on her face, but there’s something going on in her eyes. I just looked at it and I was sickened.”

Swift, was “really shaken, she was humiliated, she was horribly embarrassed because he grabbed her bare ass,” Andrea testified.

During opening statements last Tuesday, Baldridge told the jury panel that the singer is “taking a stand for all women” and that “this is a case of sexual assault in the workplace.”

“A woman is assaulted. She reports it and she gets sued … it doesn’t make sense,” added Swift’s lawyer. “She’s trying to tell people out there that you can say no when someone grabs you no matter who they are.”

The trial took place over the course of six days, but that was just the final battle in a legal war that stretches back over two years. Mueller first sued Swift in 2015, claiming he lost his job after the singer’s security team accused him of groping her butt during a meet-and-greet at the Pepsi Center in June of 2013.

Mueller denied the allegations and also accused his colleague of sexually assaulting the singer, but a rep for Swift told PEOPLE at the time that “the radio station was given evidence immediately after the incident” and “made their independent decision.”

One month later, the “Out of the Woods” singer countersued Mueller, saying in court papers he “intentionally reached under her skirt, and groped with his hand an intimate part of her body in an inappropriate manner, against her will, and without her permission.”

Swift scored an early victory on Friday, when Judge William J. Martinez dismissed Mueller’s case that the pop star got him fired, citing insufficient evidence. However, his case against Swift’s mother, Andrea, was not dismissed and Swift’s case against Mueller for sexual assault remains ongoing.

In his ruling, the judge said Mueller had filed claims of interference with contract against Swift personally rather than 13 Management, the company under which Andrea Swift and Frank Bell — who works with her management team — are employed. “Simply put, it is far too late for the plaintiff to argue that he had filed the wrong claims against the wrong people,” he said.

Adam DeVine Reveals Why He’ll Be a Better MTV Movie & TV Awards Host Than Kevin Hart and Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson

Post-Workaholics, Adam DeVine is taking on a new role — as host of the MTV Movie & TV Awards!

Previously titled the MTV Movie Awards, the annual celebration of movies will now include TV series for the first time in 25 years — and PEOPLE sat down with DeVine to find out what he has planned for the newly minted show.

“I’m already getting good vibes,” he said onset while shooting promotions for the awards. “I feel like they’re probably going to invite me back every year.”

As both a movie and television actor, the hilarious comic, 33, seems like a perfect fit for the revamped ceremony.

“I feel like I am the biggest movie and television star together as one,” he said of being chosen to host. “Will Smith might have something to say about that but they didn’t ask him , they asked me. So who’s the bigger star? It’s him, but I’m doing the best with what I have.”

From Coinage: See Where 6 Stars Were Before They Were Famous

While on his tour bus for his stand-up comedy shows, DeVine shares he got the call asking him to be host.

“I was a little hungover and I was in the back of the bus and they’re like, ‘We got big news!’ And they told me and I literally went — gasp!” he said. “They’re like, ‘Oh no, did he just die?’ But I didn’t die — I started living. Finally. With that news I could finally live.”

The pressure is on for DeVine to top last year’s co-hosts Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, but he says that he’s up for the challenge. “I’m going to be more muscular than them and have more vascularity,” he says. “That’s the only way.”

As for his favorite nominees, DeVine is rooting for his home teams. “I believe Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates and Ice Age: Collision Course are going to take every award,” he said of the two movies he had a starring role in.

Last year’s MTV Movie Awards saw some great moments from DeVine, including his on stage smooch with Pitch Perfect co-star Rebel Wilson after the two won the award for “Best Kiss.”

This year, the duo will be exchanging advice instead, since Wilson hosted the awards in 2013.

“She’s probably going to tell me to do a big song and dance number and I might listen,” he said. “I also might have to ask big Conan O’Brien  with that curly mop top that he’s got and ask him what I should do. Hopefully he doesn’t say, ‘Just be 6’4″ and have red hair’ because I won’t be able to pull that off.”

DeVine won’t be involved in the upcoming Pitch Perfect 3 with Wilson, but he still gave an idea about what his character, Bumper, has been up to since Pitch Perfect 2. “ probably lusting after Fat Amy somewhere just pining for her,” he imagined. “He’s probably homeless — that’s probably it. Bumper fell on some hard times when Fat Amy kicked him to the curb.”

While the award categories are different this year, the iconic golden popcorn awards will remain the same. As a two-time winner, DeVine gave some advice on the best place to keep the statues.

“I keep them right in the spare bedroom,” he said. “People come and they spend the night, and they realize where they’re at, the level of star that I am. I have two golden popcorns and a Teen Choice Award so I’m peaking. This is it for me.”

With some newfound free time since the Workaholics finale premiered, DeVine has plans to turn this hosting gig into a long-term career.

“I’m going to host award shows for the foreseeable future — any award show,” he said. “I’m going to start big with the MTV Movie & TV Awards and then I’m going to maybe host dog competitions. If not, then hopefully some other movies.”

The MTV Movie & TV Awards will air live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on May 7 at 8:00 p.m.

Biggest Loser Host Bob Harper’s Heart Attack: Why It Can Happen to Anyone — Even Fit People

This article originally appeared on

The Biggest Loser host and personal trainer Bob Harper is recovering from a heart attack, People reported today. The fitness celeb reportedly collapsed two weeks ago while working out at the gym, and was unconscious for two days. He was recently released from the hospital after an eight-day stay.

But Harper, 51, is hardly your typical heart attack victim: He’s relatively young, he’s super-fit, and he’s built his career on getting people healthy. Although the specifics of his experience haven’t been shared, we do know one thing: It’s an important reminder that even people with no obvious risk factors can still have underlying heart disease or problems.

A person’s heart disease risk is affected by both environment and genetics, explains Pankaj Arora MD, assistant professor of cardiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. (Dr. Arora has not treated Harper.) So it’s possible for someone with a family history of heart problems to live an extremely healthy lifestyle—staying active, eating well, not smoking — and still have an elevated risk. In fact, Harper does blame genetics for his recent event, saying his mother died young from a heart attack.

RELATED: 17 Worst Habits for Your Heart

But how much that risk is elevated depends on a lot of different genes, says Dr. Arora, not just one or two — so inherited risk is difficult to test for. It also depends on how a person lives their life. “DNA is not destiny,” he says. “You can lower your risk by staying fit and healthy even if you have bad genes, just as you can raise a low genetic risk by making unhealthy choices.”

One way Dr. Arora determines if his patients might have genetic heart risks is by asking them a question about their family history: “Did your mother have a heart attack before 65 or your father before 55?” If the answer is yes, he asks a second one: “Did the heart attack happen because of their lifestyle choices, or were they living a healthy life and it still happened anyway?”

RELATED: 8 Causes of Chest Pain That Aren’t a Heart Attack

“If their mother or father was healthy and still had a heart attack, that’s a clear sign that we should do genetic testing to determine your genetic risk,” he says. Identifying people who are at high genetic risk for heart problems can allow them to be monitored more closely; they might also be prescribed medications, like statins, to lower their risk.

That being said, there are hundreds of thousands of gene combinations involved in calculating heart disease risk, and screening for them can be complicated and confusing; that’s why it’s not recommended for most people without symptoms or a known family history of problems.

Plus, says Dr. Arora, cases of athletes and other young, fit people suffering sudden serious heart problems are still extremely rare — which is why they’re a big deal in the news when they do happen.

RELATED: 11 Heart Failure Facts Cardiologists Want You to Know

It always makes sense to get clearance from your doctor before you start a new exercise routine, says Dr. Arora, and to know your blood pressure and cholesterol levels — especially if you’re over 35, when these invisible risk factors can start to creep up. “If any of these numbers aren’t where they should be, that gives you some knowledge about your risk and what you should be doing about it,” he says.

But the bottom line, he says, is that no one should be discouraged or scared away from exercise and healthy habits when they hear about an incident like this. “Even if you are born with a high genetic risk, your risk of having an event goes down if you keep up a good physical exercise routine,” he says. “Physical exercise, study after study, has shown to improve cardiovascular health and prolong your life, and that has not changed.”

What We Hope Jimmy Fallon Will Do As Host Of The Golden Globes

It’s hard not to like Jimmy Fallon, and I’ve never understood the people who say things like, “Ugh, he’s so annoying!”

Why? Because he’s always giggling, singing, dancing and generally in a merry mood? And a follow-up question: Does your circulation suffer with your heart encased in stone?

We love Jimmy. And we’re excited to see him host the Golden Globes this year. Hopefully, he’ll bring some levity to a tough past year. We could all use a little of Jimmy’s signature goofy antics.

11 Party Mistakes That Almost Every Host Makes

Maybe it’s your birthday. Maybe your godson is graduating from college. Maybe it’s a Saturday night and your name is Emily Gilmore. Maybe it’s a Thursday night and you’re the Entertainment Chair of your fraternity. But for whatever reason, you’re throwing a party. The invitations have gone out, and you’ve figured out the lighting, decor and music.

But you also need to figure out the food and beverage situation. You’re entering perilous waters, full of rocky shoals and hungry sea monsters. But don’t worry: HuffPost is here. We’ve identified 11 common food-and-drink mistakes that party hosts make all the time. As long as you avoid these snafus, you’ll be just fine. You’ll throw a great party, and all your friends will love you forever, and all your enemies will rue the day they crossed you.

Mistake #1: Not Having Enough Ice

This is the most common mistake party hosts make, which is frustrating because it’s really cheap and easy to rectify and ice is SUPER IMPORTANT. If you have ice, you can make pretty much any simple mixed drink taste good: cold and dilution can make even straight whiskey or tequila palatable. But without ice, you can’t really make any mixed drink taste good. (Except, I suppose, a hot toddy?) The dozen ice cubes that have been collecting dust in your ice trays for a week won’t cut it. When you throw a party, buy some bags of ice. More than you think you’ll need. It’s better to have leftovers — which keep pretty much forever — than to run out halfway through the night.

Mistake #2: Not Having Enough Cups

This is almost as bad as, and even easier to fix than, not having enough ice. But I also understand it: You might think you should buy as many cups as there will be guests, plus maybe 20 percent for people who lose theirs. But the truth is that a good party will be so chaotic that many guests are likely to go through not one or two, but easily three or four cups. So buy a ton! Just be sure to recycle them the next day, or, better yet, wash and reuse them.

Mistake #3: Having Too Low A Ratio Of Mixers-To-Liquor

Here’s a common sight: You walk into a party, you go to the makeshift bar the host has set up on some credenza in their living room, and you see exactly as many bottles of juice or soda as there are bottles of liquor. This is wrong. Those mixers will run out. You should always provide at least three times as much mixer as liquor. Especially because there are bound to be some people who won’t want to drink alcohol, or much alcohol, and will want cups of plain Diet Coke or cranberry juice.

Mistake #4: Serving Drinks That Are Too Fussy

This is, in some sense, the inverse of the first three mistakes. It comes from a noble place in the heart of a party host — the desire to serve delicious beverages. But it, too, is a mistake. Fussy drinks take a long time to make, which can create bottlenecks of sobriety at the party, especially if a bunch of guests arrive at the same time. And it forces the host to focus on mixology rather than talking to their guests and having fun. If you’re insistent on serving a fantastic, elaborate drink, make it a punch that you can mix one huge batch of in advance: My favorite is the Original Chatham Artillery Punch. It’s never been anything less than a smash hit when I’ve made it for a group.

Mistake #5: Not Serving Food

You don’t have to feed everyone at your party a full dinner. Certainly not. You don’t have to serve delicious food. (Though it helps.) But if you are serving alcohol, you must provide something to eat. Chips and salsa, olives or a bowl of nuts, at least. Otherwise, people will get wasted far more quickly than you want them to — or, just as bad, they’ll leave when they get peckish.

Mistake #6: Serving Messy Food
messy food

On balance, serving messy food may actually be worse than serving no food. Nothing ruins a party like getting sloppy joe meat all over your nice shirt.

Mistake #7: Serving Clichéd Party Food

You wanna see someone’s eyes roll back all the way into their head? Invite me to a party and serve one of two kinds of food: a grape-and-cheese plate or a crudité platter, the pre-fab kind that comes from Costco. It’s lazy, boring and totally basic. I’d prefer a bowl of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. This is, I admit, better than no food at all — but only by a hair.

Mistake #8: Putting All The Food And Drink In One Place

A subtle mistake that has consigned countless parties to failure. Here’s why: If you put the beer, the liquor, the Cheetos and the cake all on one table, or, God forbid, in your narrow kitchen, all your guests are going to congregate there. That’s a recipe for heat, discomfort, accidental pushing and early departures. Instead, if you have any space at all, spread the different types of comestibles throughout your home. That way, your guests will be forced to move around the party all night, and thereby be thrust into all sorts of the random encounters that are the lifeblood of a proper party.

Mistake #9: Not Accounting For Dietary Restrictions

gwyneth paltrow

If you have no dietary restrictions whatsoever, it’s easy to be annoyed by them, or even to forget that they exist. But when you’re throwing a party, you have to think about them. Because if you don’t, you run the risk of having multiple people feel uncomfortable, hungry and sad at your party. You should be safe as long as you have options for people who are vegetarian, vegan and/or gluten-free. That’s not particularly difficult: get some wine for the gluten-free people to drink instead of beer, and serve some pita and hummus, or other meatless snack, alongside your platter of prosciutto and foie gras terrine. Easy peasy.

Mistake #10: Not Making The Menu Personal

This one’s a little nebulous, and related to the injunction against clichéd party foods. But the idea is that if you’re throwing a party, it should feel like your party. Not your mom’s party or your friend’s party or a party you saw on Pinterest. Some of this work can and should be done through decor, but food and drink with personal significance can be great too. So if you just moved back to Chicago after spending four years in San Diego, get some craft beer from that great San Diego brewery you toured! Or if you’re known as an obsessive “Breaking Bad” fan, serve some meth-inspired blue drinks! Bake some of your trademark blondies!

Mistake #11: Not Serving Jell-O Shots

jello shots

I’ve saved the most important rule of party-throwing for last: Always serve Jell-O Shots. Preferably in a piñata .

Aasif Mandvi Details How He Found Out Trevor Noah Would Be New ‘Daily Show’ Host

Longtime “Daily Show” correspondent Aasif Mandvi stopped by “The HuffPost Show” Friday night to talk about his new HBO series “The Brink,” his new web series “Halal in the Family,” and of course, all the changes at “The Daily Show.”

With Jon Stewart signing off in August, and Trevor Noah taking over the host’s desk soon after, Comedy Central’s flagship show will surely look different in the year to come. And as Mandvi put it, “daddy’s leaving, everyone’s kinda freaking out.”

As many people speculated that Mandvi would succeed Stewart as host, Roy Sekoff asked Mandvi how the show delivered the news that Noah had been picked.

“I found out the same way that everyone else on the show found out.” He went on, “You know I have a show, I’m doing ‘The Brink’ and I’m very excited about it, and so a) not even available to do it. I’m an actor at the end of the day and I love doing that. And I wish Trevor all the best.”

For more from Aasif Mandvi on “The Daily Show” changes, watch the video above.
