How Many Work Hours Per Week Make You the Most Productive?

stock photo of a punch clock with a man holding a time card

Readers, how many work hours per week make you the most productive? Do you find that your productivity taps out if you push yourself to work longer hours, or just that there is an adjustment period as you get used to that kind of schedule? In general, do you roll your eyes at people who boast about working crazy hours or, say, billing 3,000 hours per year?

We recently noticed a tweet by astrophysicist Dr. Katherine J. Mack (a.k.a. @AstroKatie) regarding studies about working long hours:

There’s tons of research out there that shows that on average, productivity drops dramatically when people are overworked. For most people, after ~40 hours, you’re not doing good work…

This topic has also been in the news recently, as various men have boasted of working long hours. For example, Business Insider pondered the “996” workweek espoused by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma (996: 72 working hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week). Similarly, Elon Musk is known for working long hours, recently arguing “[t]here are way easier places to work, but nobody ever changed the world on 40 hours a week.”

Indeed, in the much-discussed recent NYT article, “Women Did Everything Right — Then Work Got Greedy,” they note that the expectation of long hours is relatively new:

It’s only in the last two decades that salaried employees have earned more by working long hours. Four decades ago, people who worked at least 50 hours a week were paid 15 percent less, on an hourly basis, than those who worked traditional full-time schedules. By 2000, though, the wage penalty for overwork became a premium. Today, people who work 50 hours or more earn up to 8 percent more an hour than similar people working 35 to 49 hours, according to a sociology paper using Current Population Survey data by Youngjoo Cha at Indiana University, Kim Weeden at Cornell and Mauricio Bucca at the European University Institute.

The article goes on to explore how this expectation of longer hours is changing the parenting dynamic when two parents have otherwise equal earning potential — leading to one of them to opt out so the other can work the long hours. (Guess which one!? This was part of our discussion at CorporetteMoms last week on how your partner supports your career, and vice versa…)

Of course, not everyone agrees that longer hours are a great idea… The Harvard Business Review recently wondered “If You’re So Successful, Why Are You Still Working 70 Hours a Week?”, describing an office culture with long hours as akin to “brainwashing,” and noting:

Long hours are most common in managerial and professional occupations. This is something of a recent trend. In the old days, if you were a white-collar worker, the deal was that you worked as hard as you could at the start of your career to earn the right to be rewarded later on, with security of tenure and a series of increasingly senior positions. In professional organizations, such as law firms, accountancy firms, management consultancies, and investment banks, the prize was partnership. The competition was relentless, but once you won the prize, it was yours for keeps. Partners had autonomy to choose how and when to work and what to work on. Of course, some senior partners spent a surprising amount of their “business development time” on the golf course, but that was OK because they had already paid their dues to the organization.

This is no longer true. As a director of HR in a leading accounting firm told me, “The head of audit is in the office regularly from 5:30 AM until 10 PM, on weekends, too. So is our managing partner. This is not exceptional. The rest of the firm sees the senior people working these hours and emulates them.

So here are the questions: How many hours are you expected to work per week — and does it make a difference in your productivity if you are working more or fewer hours? Do you struggle with the classic billable hour problem of needing to work, say, 60 hours just to bill 40? (This gets into our discussion from a few weeks ago on whether you prefer to stay late or work from home, as well as our previous discussions regarding expectations that you’ll answer emails when you’re home.) How many hours per week are most productive for you — and when you’re pushed beyond that, how do you cope or recover? (In a related note, readers had a fascinating conversation a little while ago about anxiety hangovers and how to recover.)

24 hours in Budapest

Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, is the perfect European weekend break; there is so much to see and do, and it won’t cost you a fortune. However, if you only have 24 hours to explore this magical city, here is what we recommend you do!

Photo: Unsplash.com

Soak up some culture

Budapest is comprised of two parts, ‘Buda’ and “Pest,’ which are either side of the Danube River, connected by a chain bridge. On both sides, there is plenty to see and do, but you should definitely check out the Hungarian Parliament Building and Heroes Square for some great photo ops! The best way to make sure you are seeing the most of Budapest in such a short time is to jump on one of the many free walking tours that are arranged. If you were here for a few days, we would recommend just roaming around, but if you only have 24 hours, you’ll want to hit all the sites, so a walking tour is a must.

What to eat

If you only have 24 hours in Budapest, you need to make sure you eat the most Hungarian things you can. The Hungarian’s love a buffet, so this is the best way to get value for money. However, you should also try and grab some goulash, strudel, and lángos (which is deep fried dough covered in yummy toppings) to get a real taste for the city. Street food is pretty popular too, but remember that the further away from the river you are, the cheaper things will cost.

Relax in a natural thermal bath

One of the most famous parts of Budapest is the naturally heated thermal baths, and the most popular of these is Szechenyi. There are 15 pools on the inside of varying sizes and temperatures (from a toasty 40 degrees to almost freezing), but the best are those on the outside that are beautifully warm all year round, with colored lights, and even a bar. Even in the coldest months, if you can brave the chilly run from the changing rooms, this is something you have to experience. They also have ‘Spartys’ on Saturdays, which are parties in the outdoor pools complete with music!

Head to a ruin bar

Once you’ve dried off, there is only one place in Budapest to end your night! Ruin bars are quite possibly the coolest part of Budapest; they are old derelict buildings that have been made structurally sound and then filled with all manner of bizarre and random objects. From old cars and disused fairground rides to pallets and bathtubs to sit on. Szimpla is the oldest and best of these and is actually the third best bar in the world, according to fellow travelers. There are several rooms, each entirely different – some with DJs, others live music, some only serving certain types of drink or shisha. It’s unlike anywhere you’ve ever seen before!

As you can see, you can squeeze loads into just 24 hours in Budapest, so stock up on Hungarian Forint and book the next flight out. You won’t regret it, although you may wish you had a little longer…

You Have 24 Hours to Watch Hanna on Amazon Prime… Do It!

This is an advanced (mostly) spoiler-free review of the Season 1 premiere of Amazon Prime Video’s Hanna. The episode will be available for 24 hours, from February 3rd at 9:30 pm ET until February 4th at 9:30 pm ET. All 8 episodes will drop in March 2019.

The tried and true narrative trope of a battle-hardened older man molding a young girl into an efficient killing machine gets a new addition with Amazon Prime Video’s electrifying action thriller, Hanna. Based on the 2011 film of the same name, and scripted by David Farr (co-writer of the movie), the series feels like a stylish sibling to Fox’s Logan and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. And while you’ve probably seen this storytelling method before, Hanna stands apart with thrilling action and memorable performances from Joel Kinnaman (Altered Carbon) and Esme Creed-Miles (Dark River).

Alianna DeFreeze’s Family Sues School for Not Reporting Their Murdered Daughter Missing for 10 Hours

Courtesy The Alianna DeFreeze “Make a Change” Foundation

The last time Donnesha Cooper saw her 14-year-old daughter Alianna DeFreeze, she was “sprinting to the bus” on Jan. 26, 2017 to catch an early-morning tutoring session at school.

DeFreeze, a Cleveland seventh grader who had a developmental disability, “loved school and never missed a day,” often catching the first bus to arrive over an hour before classes started at E Prep and Village Prep Woodland Hills.

It was “freezing” on that particular Thursday, her mother recalled, which is probably why her daughter walked quickly down the street around 7 a.m. to her school bus when Christopher Whitaker, a convicted sex offender, “took her and brought her to an abandoned house nearby.”

Selfridges Notches More Than 4 Million Pounds in Early Hours of Boxing Day Sale

LONDON — Footfall may have been down on Boxing Day, which marks the start of the winter sales in Britain, but for Selfridges, the pickings were rich.
The store, known for its bright yellow branding, said following a strong pre-Christmas trading period, it took in more than 4 million pounds in the first hours of the Boxing Day sale, which began Tuesday night online and Wednesday morning in-store.
Selfridges said it has already seen a 6 percent uplift on last year, and added that Boxing Day 2018 is on track to remain the retailer’s biggest trading day of the year. Selfridges doesn’t close until 9 p.m. local time, so final numbers are still unavailable.
The company said shoppers began arriving outside the Oxford Street store at 2:30 a.m. on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, when estate owners and employers in Britain traditionally gave gifts to their employees. The store said it expected to see around 120,000 customers between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Selfridges.com has seen the highest number of site visits to date, with 1.5 million customers visiting the site since Tuesday night, with “high double-digit growth” online compared with last year, it said.

Nicki Minaj and Cardi B Call a Truce After Hours of Intense Feuding Online

Nicki Minaj and Cardi B appear to have put an end to weeks of mutual insults culminating in a day of back and forth that began with an altercation at a New York Fashion Week party in September.

Video from the event hosted by Harper’s Bazar appeared to show Cardi being escorted out by security with a large bump on her head after she reportedly threw a shoe at Minaj. Since then, the pair have been trading barbs over social media, radio and in the press.

But now they have agreed to take a break from the spat, with Minaj tweeting Tuesday morning that she wanted to focus on “positive things only”:

Cardi then posted the tweet to her Instagram, adding her own pledge to be positive.

The dispute had reached dramatic proportions late on Monday, with Cardi posting ten videos of herself on Instagram in which she accused Cardi of leaking her phone number in the wake of the Fashion Week encounter.

She also suggested she was considering suing Minaj for “defamation of character” after her claims that Cardi had bought her way into charts by paying radio stations to play her songs.

Now, though, it looks like the spat won’t be moving from Instagram to the courtroom any time soon.
