Jake Tapper: Is Trump Unaware 3,000 People Died in Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria?

CNN/screengrab

As the Category 4 Hurricane Florence barrels towards the Carolinas this week, CNN’s Jake Tapper opened his show with two alternating quotes on the screen: “TOTALLY PREPARED” and “UNSUNG SUCCESS.”

Those were the words President Donald Trump used on Tuesday afternoon to describe his administration’s response to Hurricanes Florence and Maria, respectively. This is despite the fact that, according to an official report, last year’s Hurricane Maria directly or indirectly killed nearly 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

“President Trump says we’re ‘totally prepared’ for the hurricane,” Tapper said at the top of his show. “Where have we heard that before?” After playing a clip of Trump “bragging” about his response to Hurricane Maria, the anchor added, “Observers were shocked when President Trump touted his administration’s recovery efforts during the last hurricane season, where the latest government death toll in Puerto Rico is approximately 2,975.”

3 Ways to Evacuate Ahead of a Hurricane If You Don’t Have a Lot of Money

As a Florida native who yawned while Hurricane Matthew crawled up the eastern coastline of Florida two years ago, I never thought I’d find myself caught up in the usual hysteria.

After all, I’d dealt with major storms before as a local reporter: I’d trudged through knee-deep waters after Tropical Storm Debby pounded Siesta Key in 2012 and photographed college students kayaking the streets of Longboat Key during Tropical Storm Colin four years later.

But Hurricane Harvey, and the devastation it brought to Houston, changed all that.

So there I was in September of last year, waiting three hours in line in south St. Petersburg, Florida, to fill my own sandbags. I watched as news poured in about a run on water, gas and batteries as Hurricane Irma bore down on the state.

Luckily, I had already put together most of my disaster-preparedness kit, and on a budget at that.

But next came the big question: Should I stay or should I go?

Ask Yourself: Do You Actually Need to Evacuate?

“Run from the water. Hide from the wind.”

That’s the refrain Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Ed McCrane repeats every time a tropical cyclone threatens the vulnerable Gulf Coast county.

If you live in a home in a newer subdivision, or at least one that’s been built under current construction guidelines, and have hurricane shutters, you shouldn’t worry about the high winds. The storm surge and flooding will be the biggest threat to your home, McCrane said.

If you’re in a flood zone, you should be prepared to evacuate as a hurricane approaches. Check your county’s emergency management website to determine if you fall in an evacuation zone.

You should also plan to flee the storm if you live in a mobile home park or manufactured home.

For some, it’s just a matter of gassing up the SUV and heading to a hotel in another state if they want to evacuate. But what if you don’t have the luxury?

It may be slim pickings, but there are three resources for people who want to evacuate ahead of a hurricane.

1. Hurricane Shelters Could Be Your Best Bet

Hurricane shelters are there for a reason.

They are usually schools built under strict new construction guidelines that make them the safest place for your family and pets. Yes, your county should have a pet-friendly shelter available, McCrane said.

But what should you actually schlep with you over to the local shelter?

Bring everything you would need for your emergency kit at home, plus a few things to make yourself comfortable: pillows, blankets or air mattresses; folding or lawn chairs; extra clothing, shoes and glasses; toothpaste, deodorant and other hygiene supplies; important papers, identification and family keepsakes; extra medication; and toys or games to keep the kids — and yourselves — sane.

And if you have any furry family members, don’t forget your pet emergency kit.

Also, your insurance policy will be your golden ticket after the storm, so don’t forget that either.

Keep an eye on your local media stations to see when shelters open — don’t assume.

2. Reconnect With Friends and Relatives

Who says a natural disaster can’t be a good time to catch up with old friends?

Forget about paying inflated hotel room costs — let alone finding availability — and reach out to friends and family to see if they have an extra room or couch on which to crash.

“All you have to do is go tens of miles, not hundreds of miles,” McCrane said.

If you have to travel further than a few miles, bring plenty of cash in case ATMs are down and a filled gas can, if possible. Make sure to follow specific instructions like these on how to safely transport it. You’ll want to strap it to the top of your vehicle or secure it in the bed of a truck.

That way you’ll have an emergency stash if gas stations along the highway begin running out, and you can take advantage of current gas prices.

Bring everything mentioned above that you would take to a shelter, and make sure to let as many family members as you can know where you’re headed.

3. Look for an Airbnb

In 2012, Airbnb launched Open Homes, a disaster relief program that encourages Airbnb hosts to provide free temporary shelter for those affected by natural disasters.

Airbnb currently has open homes available for those affected by Tropical Storm Gordon.

The company has not yet announced open homes available for Hurricane Florence — but the storm is expected to make landfall later this week, so be sure you have those emergency kits ready (with lots of water).

But the best advice we have as you prepare your supplies and decide whether to evacuate is not to panic.

As we reach the peak of this year’s hurricane season, we’re reminded of the guidance offered by St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman last year as Hurricane Irma approached:

“I know we’re all on edge, but another important reminder as we prepare for Hurricane Irma — let’s be nice to each other. It costs nothing.”

Alex Mahadevan is a data journalist at The Penny Hoarder. He covered hurricanes and tropical storms for five years in Sarasota, Florida.

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

Florence Becomes a Hurricane and Threatens the East Coast

Florence has strengthened into a hurricane and continues to intensify rapidly as it moves ever closer to the U.S. Atlantic coast, where it could strike somewhere between South Carolina and Virginia late this week.

Florence was about 750 miles (1,210 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda, with tropical-storm strength winds of 75 miles per hour, just above the 74 mph threshold needed to be called a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 11 a.m. New York time.

“Florence is forecast to rapidly strengthen to a major hurricane by Monday, and is expected to remain an extremely dangerous major hurricane through Thursday,” the center said.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Saturday declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm. The move will allow the state to use the National Guard for preparations and recovery if necessary. North Carolina and Virginia have taken similar steps.

Henry McMaster @henrymcmaster With this order government agencies will begin to mobilize in anticipation of a hurricane. Now is the time for your family also to prepare and stay tuned for more updates. Plan for the worst, pray for the best. SC Governor Press@scgovernorpress Governor McMaster issues executive order declaring a state of emergency.

Most forecast models point to Florence’s eye hitting the southeast coast sometime on Sept. 14, said Anthony Chipriano, a meteorologist at Radiant Solutions in Gaithersburg, Maryland. What’s worrisome is that the storm could stall at that point and wring out heavy, flooding rains throughout the area.

The northern coast of South Carolina and the Outer Banks of North Carolina are likely to be the areas most impacted by the storm, which could cause $ 15.32 billion in damage if it stays on its current five-day forecast track, said Chuck Watson, a disaster researcher at Enki Research in Savannah, Georgia.

A storm would normally weaken considerably if it stalled on the coast, by choking off its own energy supply as it churned over its own wake, Watson said. But the Gulf Stream is pushing warm water past Cape Hatteras, which could create a “nightmare scenario” that could lead to as much as $ 25 billion in damages, putting Florence in the top 10 of the most destructive storms, he said.

Hurricane track and intensity forecasts often have wide margins of error beyond five days, and with Florence computer models have struggled to accurately predict what the storm will do.

“The models have not been very good with intensity for this system pretty much for the entirety of the storm,” Chipriano said.

Bermuda High

More than 3.9 million homes that would cost more than a $ 1 trillion to rebuild are at risk from hurricanes on the U.S. Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida, according to CoreLogic, a property analytics firm in Irvine, California.

The East Coast’s fate from the current storm will be decided by a weather pattern called the Bermuda High. A semi-permanent feature in the Atlantic, the high rotates in a clockwise manner and will steer Florence through the ocean.

Nine storms have emerged across the Atlantic so far this year. To the east of Florence, forecasters are also watching tropical storms Helene and Isaac. Helene is brushing past the Cabo Verde Islands off Africa before drifting into the central Atlantic, while Isaac could grow to a hurricane and threaten the small islands in the Caribbean Sea by Thursday.

Meanwhile, in the Pacific, Hurricane Olivia, forecast to weaken to a tropical storm, may hit Hawaii as soon as Tuesday. Further west, Typhoon Mangkhut will sweep past the U.S. territory of Guam Monday and Tuesday.

Category 4 Hurricane Lane Headed for Hawaii

“Hurricane Lane’s outer bands have been pummeling parts of Hawaii’s Big Island with rain Thursday morning, triggering landslides and threatening serious flooding as the Category 4 cyclone moves perilously close to the Aloha State.” – CNN

Residents of Hawaii frantically scramble to adapt, as Hurricane Lane is quite possibly the first major cyclone to hit the states in 26 years.

Hawaii Governor, David Inge, has urged everyone to prepare for the disaster by setting aside enough food and water to live off for two weeks.  The Central Pacific Hurricane Center is tracking the hurricane and has predicted that it is expected to move progressively closer to the main islands Thursday through Friday.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator, Brock Long, released a statement saying “Hawaii is going to be impacted by Hurricane Lane. The question is, how bad?”

Reports have shown that the storm’s center has maximum sustained winds close to 130 mph, was in the Pacific about 205 miles southwest of the Big Island town of Kailua-Kona around 8 a.m. HT Thursday (2 p.m. ET).

Approximately 7 to 12 inches of rain has already hit the island of Hawaii early Thursday, with no expected cease (for now).  This tropical storm has brought 39-73 mph winds that have stretched out over 140 miles. Officials remind everyone to stay safe during these dire conditions. This natural disaster will bring dangerous winds, landslides, rough surf and major flooding so be sure to stick together.

It sounds like an exaggeration but when Hurricane Irma knocked out the British Virgin Islands (BVI) on 6 September 2017 the winds did reach 215mph – faster still inside the tornadoes spinning on the edge of the storm’s eye.

Hurricane Maria Victims Recruited to Give Aid Workers a ‘Spa Day’

Spa Day

Amidst the devastation occurring in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria, a doctor claims federal aid workers organized a “spa day” for themselves while on the clock.

On Thursday, The Rachel Maddow Show reported devastated Puerto Ricans were recruited to provide luxury services at a discounted rate to relief workers. The spa day was orchestrated by Health and Human Services medical staff and took place while workers were on the clock and should have been aiding devastated victims of the natural disaster. They even hosted their rest and relaxation time in medical triage tents.

Senior medical officer Dr. Khanna — whose first name has not been revealed — served as a relief worker for two decades. She quit in light of the egregious misconduct she witnessed in Puerto Rico. Dr. Khanna exposed her former colleagues’ apathetic activity in her resignation letter.

“I find this gross misuse of taxpayer funds and abuse of our privileged positions personally abhorrent,” the doctor who worked with the National Disaster Medical System, wrote in her letter. “I can no longer serve with honor.”

NDMS is an agency which operates under Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Defense and Veterans Affairs departments.

The organization claimed they were looking into the misconduct.

Rookie Football Player Deshaun Watson Gives His First Paycheck to Hurricane Harvey Victims

Deshaun Watson

The 2017 football season marked Houston Texan quarterback Deshaun Watson’s first time playing professional football. So what did he do with that first check? Watson, who is 22 years old, donated his big league bucks to victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Watson donated a total of $ 27,353 to three cafeteria workers at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The rookie came into the cafeteria where the women worked to personally deliver the envelopes sealed with red ribbon. The ladies lost their cars and homes as a result of Harvey.

“For what you all do for us every day and never complain, I really appreciate you all, so I wanted to give my first game check to y’all to help y’all out in some type of way,” Watson told the workers who serve meals to the team prior to game time.

“Hopefully that gets you guys back on your feet and anything you all need, I’m always here to help,” he continued.

Jay Z And Beyoncè Will Perform Joint Concert For Hurricane Relief

Dynamic duo Jay-Z and Beyoncè will perform a rare joint concert next month to raise money for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

The show, expected to include several artists from Hov’s Roc Nation, will be held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday, October 17. So far, no word on when tickets will go on sale.

Beyoncé, 36, has been actively involved in relief efforts following the devastating hurricanes, which made landfall in late August and early September. In addition to assisting relief efforts on the ground in her Houston hometown, she delivered an impassioned plea to donors in a video message that aired during the Hand in Hand telethon on September 12.

“During a time where it’s impossible to watch the news without seeing violence or racism in this country, just when you think it couldn’t possibly get worse, natural disasters take precious life, do massive damage and forever change lives, leaving behind contaminated water, flooded hospitals, schools and nursing homes,” she said in a pre-recorded message before urging fans to “come together in a collective effort to raise our voices, to help our communities, to lift our spirits and heal.”

Meanwhile, Jay-Z, 47, has been busy promoting his latest album, “4:44.” He recently performed at V Festival in England and The Meadows Music & Arts Festival in NYC, and will kick off his world tour in Anaheim, California, on October 27.

The concert comes just four months after Bey and Jay welcomed twins Rumi and Sir Carter. They are also the parents of 5-year-old daughter Blue Ivy.

All of Puerto Rico Without Power Amid Hurricane Maria

All of Puerto Rico lost power on Wednesday, just hours after Hurricane Maria made landfall on the island as a Category 4 storm, ABC News reported. The Puerto Rico Office of Emergency Management Agency said that anyone with electricity is relying on a backup generator. Ricardo Ramos, the director of the island’s only electrical company, told reporters last month that storm damage to the U.S. territory’s electrical system could leave it without power for three to four months. The National Hurricane Center warned that the situation is “extremely dangerous and life-threatening.” The cyclone is forecast to move away from Puerto Rico in the next few hours and head westward towards the Dominican Republic.

Hurricane Maria to ‘Rapidly Strengthen’ in Next Two Days

Another powerful storm is brewing in the Caribbean, less than two weeks after Category 5 Hurricane Irma smashed the region and then slammed into Florida. Hurricane “Maria is expected to become a major hurricane as it moves through the Leeward Islands,” said a forecaster at the National Hurricane Center, and it will be marked by “rapid strengthening” during the next 48 hours. Maria, now at Category 1 strength, is approaching the Lesser Antilles and is expected to rip into the Leeward Islands—home of the already-devastated U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and St. Martin/St. Marteen—on Monday night. Just days ago, Hurricane Irma—one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the Atlantic—killed at least 84 people in the Caribbean and U.S.

How to Get an SBA Disaster Loan After Hurricane Harvey

If there is one important lesson business owners learn early and often, it is that there will always be setbacks. The recent devastation from Hurricane Harvey is one example of how these setbacks can rarely be avoided. You can prepare for them, however, by considering resources designed to get your company back on track. One of the most respected assistance programs is administered by the SBA.

(Image: iStock/Weekend Images Inc.)

Am I Eligible?

The Small Business Administration has been giving business owners a helping hand since 1958, and they offer several financial programs specifically for those suffering losses from a declared disaster. What kind of disaster qualifies? The SBA keeps an updated list of all eligible disaster areas in its database, where you will find Presidential and SBA agency declared disasters, as well as those declared by the Agriculture Department. Events most often covered include flooding, drought, and tropical storms.

It is important to remember that you need to be affected by a disaster to begin the process of applying for help. It may take time for the website to be updated, and not all disasters will qualify. (A quick check on the government’s Disaster Assistance address tool will let you know.) If you feel that your disaster should be covered – but isn’t – you can contact local officials to see if they have started the process for disaster declaration. The approval can be long, and may not always go your way. You can also try petitioning the White House directly for disaster approval through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

What Expenses Are Covered?

Once your specific disaster has been listed on the site, you can start the process of getting help for your business. The loans issued by the SBA are to be used for business-related expenses with one exception — there is a disaster loan option for homeowners and renters (no business holdings required) that caps at $ 200,000. There is also a program available to help with times of economic loss for businesses. Businesses who were unable to pay bills or meet financial obligations may qualify for working capital (Economic Injury Disaster Loans) to help get you through until your business is up and running again.

The funds from an SBA loan are to be used to pay for uninsured damages to your business and company property. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be used for insured items, however. If you need to improve your repaired or replaced property to avoid future damages, you can usually get 20% more than original value cost with a loan. You can also use loan proceeds to cover outstanding mortgage payments for damaged, insured property.

How Do I Apply?

You should immediately apply for assistance once you know that you are eligible for funds. Business owners can start the application at the SBA website, which is the fastest way to receive a determination. A business of any size (including agricultural co-ops and private nonprofits) can apply for up to $ 2 million in loans for economic loss; businesses may also apply for up to $ 2 million in physical damages. Both loans cannot exceed the maximum of $ 2 million in total funding.

You’ll need the following items to fill out your application:

  • Business’s legal name, ownership details (including SSNs for owners), address and contact information
  • Documentation of type and scope of damages
  • Tax filing records
  • Profit and loss statements
  • Listings of assets and depreciation records

There may be additional items requested that are specific to your business type or situation. You may also be asked for more in-depth records for any of the above at any point in the loan application. For easy access during clean-up and recovery, it is recommended that you keep digital copies of pertinent records on hand to assist with application needs.

When Will I Get Approval?

Not everyone who applies will be given a loan, and the process takes some time to go through the appropriate channels. During your loan review, the SBA will check your business credit history, and potentially your personal credit history, to see if you are a good risk for the loan. (You can check your personal and business credit scores for free on Nav.) They will require any principals of the business to personally guarantee the loan — that means if you default, your personal credit scores could be at risk. They will also inspect the business property to estimate the value of damages. After insurance coverage and applicant’s eligibility are reviewed, a loan offer will be made to qualified business owners within 2-3 weeks from the application date. (Insurance review and payments do not have to be finalized for the loan to proceed.)

When Will I Get Funds?

Once you have been approved for a loan, and sign the required documents, an initial disbursement can be made within five days. This first payment can range from $ 14,000 to $ 25,000 and will depend on the total loan amount and type of disaster declaration made for the covered area. A loan officer will also be assigned to help the business owner get access to the remaining loan amount, including adjustments made for unexpected additional damages that may need to be covered.

Don’t Delay in Asking for Help

Affected businesses from Hurricane Harvey (or any other declared disaster) should take action right away to get help from the SBA. Each declared disaster will have a filing deadline in which all applications for assistance must meet. This is usually 60 days from declaration for physical damages and nine months for economic damages. These deadlines may be extended at the agency’s discretion.

It is very important for business owners to do all that they can to mitigate loss to their businesses before a disaster hits. The Small Business Administration has a helpful reference guide for these preparations. If the event is unexpected, however, or you can’t prevent loss, it’s good to know that they are standing by to help.

Hurricane Irma regains strength as Category 4 storm as it nears Florida

ST. Powerful Hurricane Irma Hits First Caribbean Islands

Hurricane Irma, the most powerful hurricane to originate from the Atlantic Ocean in recorded history, made landfall in the Caribbean early Wednesday morning. The Category 5 storm, with sustained winds at around 185 mph, passed over Barbuda about 1:45 a.m., where it ripped off the roof of a police station on the island. It was too early to determine the extent of the damage, especially because the storm knocked out most communications. Irma is also set to hit Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Cuba—then the U.S. According to the Associated Press, residents of the Florida Keys—who are known for riding out some of the most powerful hurricanes—are readying for an evacuation.

J.J. Watt’s Hurricane Harvey Donation Drive Tops the $15 Million Mark

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt announced Friday that his donation drive for Hurricane Harvey flooding victims has raised over $ 15 million, far exceeding his initial goal of $ 200,000.

“Every single time we hit one of these landmarks I’m amazed,” Watt said in a video posted to Twitter. “I’ve said it so many times before but I think the worst times bring out the best in people, and we’re seeing that in abundance right now.”

The NFL player launched the fundraising effort Sunday after seeing the damage Harvey had caused in the Houston area and beyond.

“Where we stand right now is, we want to take care of the immediate needs first, so we have nine semi trucks fully loaded with supplies coming into town this weekend. My teammates and I are going to go directly into the community to some areas that were hit very hard and we’re going to hand those out.”

“I want to do right by everybody who donated, and I want to make sure we do right by the people of Houston. So I’m taking my time to make sure that we do this thing right,” Watt said. “I’m not going to do it hastily, I just want to make sure we do it right.”

Vice President Mike Pence to travel to Texas to see Hurricane Harvey’s damage

WASHINGTON — Vice President Mike Pence is getting a chance to survey Harvey’s wreckage.

Pence is traveling to the tiny coastal town of Rockport, Texas, on Thursday to see the devastation caused by the hurricane-turned-tropical depression that set a rainfall record and severely flooded the Houston area. Harvey’s five straight days of rain totaled close to 52 inches, the heaviest tropical downpour ever recorded in the continental U.S.

Residents of Rockport were among the first in the U.S. hit by Harvey, which came ashore last Friday as a Category 4 hurricane.

President Donald Trump visited Corpus Christi, Texas, and Austin on Tuesday for briefings with local officials.

Trump plans to return to Texas on Saturday and possibly visit Louisiana, parts of which are now being lashed by Harvey’s remnants.

Hurricane Harvey: Beyoncé Pledges to ‘Help As Many’ Residents As Possible

02-beyonce-ivy-park-2017-billboard-1548

Beyoncé has pledged to assist those in need following the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The Houston native released a statement exclusively to the news outlet in response to the devastating effects of the natural disaster that has claimed the lives of at least nine people.

“My heart goes out to my hometown, Houston, and I remain in constant prayer for those affected and for the rescuers who have been so brave and determined to do so much to help,” she said in a statement. “I am working closely with my team at BeyGOOD as well as my pastor (Rudy Rasmus at St. John’s in downtown Houston) to implement a plan to help as many as we can.”

Rasmus confirmed that the 35-year-old star had in fact made a significant contribution to the disaster.

“She’s starting out with a significant donation, and that donation is getting us to launch out into some areas that help us more effectively impact the communities that have been the most affected,” Rasmus said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “She has, over the years, been very generous to our cause, and we continue to work together. She has been a huge benefactor to our efforts here in Houston, Texas.”

Beyoncé launched BeyGOOD in 2013 during the Mrs. Carter World Tour. It’s a philanthropic effort that collaborates with global charity organizations to help people find jobs, provide clothing, counseling, housing, food and medical assistance.

According to an estimate by officials, more than 30,000 residents are in need of shelter. The city has experienced unprecedented levels of rain, and more is set to arrive over the coming days.

Beyoncé has pledged to “help as many” residents as possible, and offered her prayers to

“I remain in constant prayer for those affected and for the rescuers who have been so brave and determined to do so much to help,” she said.

Surviving Hurricane Harvey, with kids: How these 3 moms are doing it

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

I have a hard time wrapping my brain around what’s happening with Hurricane Harvey.

As I write this, Hurricane Harvey has dumped 49.2 inches of total rainfall, and The Weather Channel says “This may end up being one of the worst flood disasters in U.S. history.” Thirty thousand people are anticipated to be without homes, and at least nine people have died. Thousands of people have been rescued so far.

As a blogger myself, I follow lots of other bloggers, including several moms who live in Houston and the surrounding areas, and who are sharing their experiences since the storm hit. And since the thing that really helps me put a face on this — or any — disaster is hearing firsthand stories from people who are there, I wanted to share them.

Paula Rollo wrote “To the moms holding it together for their kids during Hurricane Harvey” on her blog Beauty Through Imperfection a few days ago, and it hit on something I always struggle with. How much do we tell our children about disasters? She said,

“Yesterday was the first day that I’ve ever flat out lied to my kids. I never lie to them, not even in little “white” lies like “we’re out of candy.” I always shoot them straight…I lied to them and I still don’t know if it was the right thing to do.

They know it’s storming. They know there are floods, but in their little-kid minds they don’t quite grasp the reality of what is going on around us. And I don’t think I want them to just yet.”

I can completely relate. Who among us really knows what to tell our kids? Or how much they can handle? I never do.

Kirsten Oliphant wrote about what her family is experiencing in Katy, Texas, and included this terrifying thought,

“When you are in the midst of a hurricane, every decision seems like a bad one. You just have to choose the best BAD choice…From the outside, decisions may not make sense. You may not get why the city didn’t evacuate or why people stayed in their homes and got trapped or went out and got trapped. Again, there are no GOOD decisions. Our mayor encouraged people to stay. Evacuation for Rita over ten years ago meant the loss of more than 100 lives. There are no easy answers.”

We like things to make sense. Those of us not in the thick of this like to think that we wouldn’t be trapped in our homes, because we would have done things differently. It gives us reassurance and a sense of control that’s much more comforting than realizing that this could happen to us, too. That sometimes there aren’t any good answers.

Stacey at The Soccer Mom Blog wrote “Hurricane Harvey: Why I Can’t Mark Myself Safe,” and shared this picture from Sunday:

photo courtesy: The Soccer Mom Blog

She says this is the hardest thing to explain to those of us not living it,

“I think what is hardest to describe to those watching from the outside is the constant state of emotion. At one moment I am in complete fear that our family will need to be evacuated from our home. When we are out of immediate danger, I am filled with worry and sadness for the friends I can’t help. And then the rest of the time, I am so overwhelmed that I sit in a stupor and stare at the endless newsfeed on local television. Watching the city that I love brought to its knees. And I can’t help because we ourselves are not out of danger.”

In the meantime, because they are moms with kids, they’re also dealing with normal kid and family problems. Kirsten says she still has bored, hungry children and messes to clean and muddy dog paws on the carpet. She’s just handling that along with knowing that at some point she and her husband may have to evacuate five kids and three large dogs, because this is what parents do.

We’re praying for you, Texas.

Beyonce’s Pastors Explains Their Joint Effort To Assist Hurricane Harvey Victims

Beyonce’s longtime pastor appeared on TMZ Live today after news surfaced of his role in the singer’s efforts to help Hurricane Harvey victims in her native Houston.

Rev. Rudy Rasmus from St. John’s United Methodist Church said one part of the plan is “to gather as many supplies as we can, knowing that in the next few days when the skies start clearing, people are going to be in intense need of items that they just right now, many have lost in the homes through the flooding.”

Rev. Rasmus said the singer usually keeps her charitable efforts out of the media spotlight, and that Bey will likely neither confirm nor deny an online rumor that she has already donated $ 7 million toward Hurricane Harvey efforts.

Major Damage Reported in Texas as Hurricane Downgraded to Category 1 Storm

Major damage was reported in several cities along the Texas coast after Hurricane Harvey made landfall late Friday, with local authorities in Rockport describing a scene of devastation from the Category 4 storm. Local media in Rockport reported that at least 10 people were injured when the roof of a senior housing center caved in late Friday, and authorities said the roof of a high school had partially collapsed as well. The storm hit the area with winds of up to 130 mph before being downgraded to a Category 2 and then a Category 1 storm early Saturday, though authorities warned the 90-mph winds were still dangerous. Rockport Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Rios told local news station KIII-TV that any residents planning to stay put and ride out the storm “should make some type of preparation to mark their arm with a Sharpie pen” so that rescuers can identify them. There were no immediate reports of fatalities, but Melissa Munguia, deputy emergency management coordinator in Nueces County, one of the counties hit the hardest, said early Saturday that rescuers have not yet been able to assess all the damage.

Texans Brace for ‘Life-Threatening’ Hurricane

A South Texas children’s hospital has begun airlifting ill infants out of the path of Hurricane Harvey and several counties have ordered mandatory evacuations amid fears the “life-threatening” hurricane due to hit Friday will wreak devastation. Authorities have warned the storm may have winds as high as 111 miles per hour, and meteorologists say some areas can expect up to 35 inches of rain and severe flooding. “We are expecting catastrophic, life-threatening flooding in Southeastern Texas,” Carl Erickson, a senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, warned. The Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi evacuated 10 infants from an intensive care unit late Thursday over fears of power outages, while U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in Port Isabel moved detainees to a facility out of the storm’s trajectory. Highways throughout the state were clogged with residents fleeing further inland, while those who chose to stay were stocking up on bottled water, filling sandbags, and boarding up windows to protect their homes.

Hurricane Harvey to Hit as a Category 3 Storm

Hurricane Harvey is projected to hit Texas on Friday as a category 3 storm, The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday. The storm, which was previously forecasted to reach only category 1 status, might now have winds of at least 111 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. It will likely make landfall between Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bay. Harvey is expected to bring heavy rainfall and flooding across southeast Texas. Various coastal areas were given evacuation orders, including Portland, Corpus Christi, and Port Aransas. The state has not been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Ike caused widespread destruction and killed 21 people in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

Nation Panics As Hurricane Donald Forms Over D.C.

2017-01-20-1484926647-6718508-WhiteHouseStorm.jpg

WASHINGTON–Millions across the country are panicking as the orange clouds of Hurricane Donald have begun to form over the nation’s capital.

Authorities are cautioning Americans to remain calm, but reports of looting and stockpiling continue to rise as people everywhere prepare for the worst.

Items like basic dignity, mutual respect, and the forward progression of human civilization have been flying off the shelves from coast to coast.

Many families have started hoarding marriage equality, the free press, and a general understanding of climate science, while others are frantically filling their homes with the expectation that no American should have to die uninsured from pre-existing medical conditions.

Minority communities have seen a considerable spike in preparedness activities as residents race to stockpile basic human rights and equal protection under the law.

“People are legitimately scared,” said single mother Laura Rollins. “My daughter and I spent all weekend reinforcing the basement with the belief that women are human beings.”

“I already have a lot of not wanting to get nuked over stupid shit that could’ve totally been avoided with some basic fucking diplomacy skills,” said small-business owner Larry Cho. “But with Donald picking up speed, I made a special trip to get more.”

Relatively weak by itself, it’s actually the debris that Hurricane Donald brings with–like its ties to white-supremacy groups, undermining national security, and Rex Tillerson–that experts caution could do the worst damage.

While Hurricane Donald may seem to have come out of nowhere, meteorologists as early as the Republican primaries have warned Americans about the threat of gale-force hot air if emergency precautions were not taken.

And many fear it will take longer than four years to recover.
