DJ Khaled knew Nipsey Hussle was ‘special’ from early on

OHMYGOSSIP — DJ Khaled knew Nipsey Hussle was “special” early on and tried to sign him to his record label.
The ‘I’m the One’ hitmaker has opened up about how “blessed” he was to have known the late rapper – who was shot and killed in March outside his Marathon shop in Los Angeles – for more than a decade and revealed he was keen to get him on his label, We the Best Music Group, which is now an imprint of Epic Records, which already had Nipsey on their books at the time.
Speaking to DJ Semtex on the Spotify Original ‘Who We Be TALKS_’ podcast, Khaled shared: “I was blessed to know Nipsey for a long time, I’ve known him probably 12 years.
“I’ve always been a fan of him ever since he had that documentary out, it is a long time ago and I’ve seen the documentary of him before I even heard a record, and I was already like this kid is special.
“I actually tried to sign him, he was on Epic that time, and I was working at Def Jam and he came to Miami to record with us and caught a vie and the minute I met him I’m like, ‘Yo I am a big fan.’”
Nipsey features on the 43-year-old star’s star-studded new album ‘Father of Asahd’ – which is out now and also features collaborations with Beyonce, Cardi B, Post Malone and Travis Scott, to name a few – on the track ‘Higher’ with John Legend, which they shot the music video for days before his tragic passing at the age of 33.
Among the tracks is ‘Celebrate’ featuring hip-hop superstars Travis Scott and Post Malone, and Khaled says he was determined to get both of the rappers in the studio to lay down their lines in person.
He said: “Travis Scott and Post Malone I fought to make sure we actually recorded the record meaning through everybody’s schedule, its Travis Scott coming off ‘Astroworld’, just fighting through that schedule to get a recordable, before I talk about how we recorded, I just want you to see the picture, the visual of me Travis and Post standing next to each other, those two guys are rock stars, you know, look at Travis right now, look at Post Malone, that’s like a dope collab and that’s a big collab, especially for the generation now.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — DJ Khaled is releasing a single with Nipsey Hussle that was filmed days before Hussle was shot to death in Los Angeles.

Khaled announced on Twitter on Wednesday that all proceeds from “Higher” will be donated to Hussle’s children, 10-year-old Emani and 2-year-old Kross.

Khaled says he decided to share the single after much prayer and with the full blessing of Hussle’s family. He says the “title of the song reminds us that vibrating on a ‘Higher’ level was the essence of Nipsey’s soul.”

The song also features John Legend.

Hussle was shot to death in what police said was a personal dispute outside his South Los Angeles clothing store on March 31.

The man charged in the shooting has pleaded not guilty.

Victim Shot In Nipsey Hussle Murder Arrested For Parole Violation

Nipsey Hussle Memorial - Day 2

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN

Kerry Lathan, the man who Nipsey Hussle was buying clothes for on the day that beloved rapper was gunned down, has been arrested on a parole violation.

Lathan, 56, who was one of the two men who were shot and wounded during the March 31 shooting has been in jail since Monday. One of the terms for most California parolees is that they have no interaction with felons or gang members. Due to Hussle’s affiliation with the Rollin 60’s Crips, it is widely believed that Lathan may have violated his parole that way.

Lathan had served 20 years for murder before being released on parole.

“Gov. Gavin Newsom should order the immediate release of Kerry. His arrest sends a horrible message to parolees trying to integrate into society and for [corrections] officials to label Hussle, who was a Grammy-nominated artist entrepreneur, gentrification fighter and philanthropist, as a known gang member is a slap in the face to his family and our grieving community,” community activist Najee Ali told The Los Angeles Times on Friday.

On March 31, Hussle went to The Marathon Store to get some clothes for Lathan so that he would be fresh to see his family and friends for the first time in well over two decades. Then, tragedy struck.

Lathan, Hussle and another man were standing outside of The Marathon Clothing store when Eric Holder approached them. After a brief verbal confrontation between he and Hussle, the two shook hands and Holder left. He then later returned, opening fire, hitting Lathan in the back and shooting Hussle numerous times. Hussle died at an LA area hospital.

Holder was arrested on April 2 and has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder in the killing.

A public memorial service was held Thursday for Hussle at the Staples Center followed by a long procession through the streets of Los Angeles, culminating in a large gathering on the newly minted Nipsey Hussle Square where The Marathon Clothing Store is located. “The Marathon Continues,” was an underlying theme throughout as the streets of South Central L.A. filled with well wishers, fans and more. He was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Hollywood Hills on Friday.

4 Shot Near Nipsey Hussle Procession Route

A shooting killed one person and wounded three others near the funeral procession route for slain rapper Nipsey Hussle in South Los Angeles.

Officer Drake Madison says there’s no indication the shooting Thursday evening was connected to the procession.

Police say the gunfire happened around 6:25 p.m. a few blocks away from a section of the 25-mile (40-kilometer) procession route. The procession drew large crowds of people who lingered well into the night.

The Los Angeles Times reports the shooting occurred after the procession passed through the area.

South Los Angeles has seen an uptick in shootings.

Police Chief Michel Moore tweeted: “We must stop this senseless violence.”

Nipsey Hussle Reflected on His Legacy a Year Before His Death [VIDEO]

It may be the millennial generation’s Tupac moment—the untimely death of rap star Nipsey Hussle. While the 33-year-old rapper, whose real name was Ermias Davidson Asghedom, did not live long enough to achieve the legendary musical catalog of Tupac Shakur—his death, as with Shakur’s—will mark a sad milestone in the lives of younger hip-hop fans and the music industry.

There are parallels between the two artists. Both used their fame as platforms to fight injustice. Both rose from hard street lives to become stars in the entertainment industry. And both would become victims of the type of gun violence from which their fame and success could not serve as shields.

Yet, as with many of his generation, Nipsey Hussle saw the value of entrepreneurship and legacy wealth-building as a way of empowering the black community.

[Watch Nipsey Hussle’s interview with BE in April 2018]

How Nipsey Hussle Left a Legacy of Wealth-Building

A technology enthusiast, Hussle was intent on disrupting both the music and technology industries, one venture at a time.

“In our culture, there’s a narrative that says, ‘Follow the athletes, follow the entertainers,’” he said in an interview with The LA Times. “And that’s cool, but there should be something that says, ‘Follow Elon Musk, follow [Mark] Zuckerberg.”

That keen understanding of the power of technology to build wealth and enact change sparked the idea for his retail store and brand, The Marathon Clothing. The first “smart store” of its kind, it offers customers an enhanced online as well as physical shopping experience through a custom app.

“This is just taking the retail space to the next level and also, offering a different experience when you come here as opposed to buying it online,” he said in an interview last year with Black Enterprise.

Iddris Sandu was a partner of Nipsey Hussle’s in The Marathon Clothing store venture. He spoke about the vision he and Hussle had for the store and why technology was so important to both of them.

“Tech companies don’t allow the culture to thrive by thinking that they have the best service and that culture benefits from the technology. The culture doesn’t work for the tech, the tech works for the culture. By honoring and respecting this, one can achieve a high level of success in arbitrating both of these fields to create unparalleled experiences,” said Sandu at the time.

The Marathon Clothing is located in the heart of the Crenshaw District, where Hussle grew up. The store would also, unfortunately, become the location where his life abruptly ended.

The Grammy-nominated artist also invested in cryptocurrency, real estate, and had recently opened Vector 90, a co-working space and incubator that also served as a STEM center for youth.

What He Meant to Millennials and the Urban Community

Several millennials at Black Enterprise weighed in on what Nipsey Hussle meant to them and their generation.

For me, Nipsey as he often described himself, “a well-groomed gangster lumberjack” was the epitome of what rap culture requires these days—an authentic character that fans can relate to ( he talked famously about being a member of the Rolling 60’s Crips) and a figure corporate America could embrace and sell. His business acumen is well documented and his interests varied beyond the recording booth. I was in awe when he conceived the idea to sell his CD, Crenshaw for $ 100 , a limited edition of 1,000, in which Jay Z purchased 100 copies. His mixtape series Bullets Ain’t Got No Name proved tragically prophetic. — Ed Stokes, Videographer; Content Producer

I actually do listen to Nipsey Hussle’s music and he is one of my favorite artists. One thing I can say about him is that although none of his projects sounded the same, he always had one underlying theme in all of them and that was ownership. For most of Nipsey’s career, he was independent and paid for marketing and distribution himself. He constantly rapped about owning 100% of the masters to all of his music recording which is a big deal since most artists relinquish a percentage of the rights to their music once they sign to a major record label. He was not just a rapper but an example to other rappers by showing them they can be self-sufficient and successful at the same time. —Roland Michel, Researcher

Although I’ve never listened to Nipsey Hussle’s music, I admired the impact he made in his community and the example he set as a former gang-member-turned-entrepreneur and rapper from South L.A. Despite growing up in a community plagued by drug and gang activity, he was determined to beat the odds and used his platform to invest in underrepresented neighborhoods. For example, last year his foundation financed the development of a co-working space, STEM center, and incubator geared toward children of color. He also founded his own record label and opened his own smart store, where he was tragically gunned down. Nipsey Hussle gave hope to inner-city youth and will be recognized as a hometown hero. —Selena Hill, Digital Editor

Nipsey Hussle preached the gospel of business and ownership from day one. That is what drew me to his work. Beyond his artistry, he set the standard for how black men from the community should give back; set up shop in their communities; and be for the people. Nipsey always reminded me of who Tupac could have become. Thirty-three is such a powerful age for black men biblically speaking. He taught others how to have multiple streams of revenue, made people believe in the power of ownership, and left a legacy. —Lydia T. Blanco, Digital Community Specialist

In the end, his main focus was leaving a positive legacy.

“10 years from now, I would like to have laid a blueprint down that other people can follow who came from the same situation,” he said in his interview with BE.

Lauren London And Nipsey Hussle Discuss Their “Building” Love Story & London Sacrificing Her Career For Her Child

Lauren London and Nipsey Hussle GQ Shoot

Source: Awol Erizku / GQ

Last month, Lauren London and Nipsey Hustle had folks scratching their heads wondering if the two had gotten engaged. But the photos that leaked actually came from another place. They were behind the scenes images from the couple’s beautiful photo shoot and piece for GQ.

The couple traveled Slauson Avenue, a Black neighborhood in Crenshaw California—sometimes on a White horseback documenting their flyness and their coupledom.

London and Hussle were photographed by Awok Erizku, the same photographer who captured Beyoncé’s pregnancy announcement and the reveal of her twins, shortly after they were born. The photo went on to become the most liked photo on Instagram.

Erizku’s other popular works include Girl With a Bamboo Earring (2009).

In the accompanying article, the two talk about how they met on Instagram when, in 2013, London was attempting to buy Hussle’s $ 100 album as a wrap gift for her castmates on “The Game.” After she secured the copies, she followed him. Hussle said, “You know what that means, right?!” He took it as a sign of her interest and he slid into her DMs.

In the article the couple, who are parents to a son named Kross, dispelled engagement rumors to say that they’ve been together for five years and are “building.”

In the piece the two discuss being important to Black culture but not necessarily crossing over to mainstream audiences. For London, in the time when she had the chance to possibly cross over, life happened.

“I auditioned to be Faith Evans in Notorious,” Lauren recalled. “I talked to Faith, Puff, everybody. It just came down that the director didn’t believe me as Faith.” Riding the ups and downs together, they seem to be having fun. But it was one single decision that made them more than just another celebrity couple in Nipsey’s eyes.

“Lauren was handpicked by John Singleton to do Snowfall. She read, got the part, shot the pilot…did stunts…this was her dream role,” Nipsey said. “And then she got pregnant with our son. That was a really hard decision for her to make. It was the toughest decision of my career by far.”

But ultimately, London said she made the right decision.

“Do I choose my soul or myself?” Lauren said. “I went with my soul.”
