Clandestina Is Cuba’s First Independent Fashion Label. Its Founders Want ‘Global Domination.’

Idania del Rio, co-founder of Cuba’s first independent fashion label Clandestina, wore a recycled T-shirt to the recent opening of her New York pop-up. With a ripped neck held together by many safety pins, the refurbished black Cincinnati Bearcats jersey resembled a sort of gender-neutral take on Elizabeth Hurley’s famous black Versace dress.

A publicist for the brand was quick to whisper that the salvaged top, like most Clandestina pieces, was “sustainable.”

The s-word has emerged as one of the Planet Fashion’s buzziest trends, with major players like Levi’s, H&M, and Kering pledging to release eco-friendly designs and initiatives. In Cuba, recycling clothes isn’t just in vogue—it’s been a way of life for more than half a century.

The Queen apparently shut down Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s plan to be ‘entirely independent’

Wait, what?

A lot has changed in the royal family over the past year, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle undoubtedly going through the biggest transition of everyone.

The royal couple married in May last year, gained the title of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and now with a royal baby on the way they have relocated, splitting from their shared household in Kensington Palace with the Cambridges and moving to Windsor to create their own set-up in Frogmore Cottage.

So began the rumours of a feud between Meghan and Kate and the fears that this could be the end of the Fab Four, something that insiders were quick to point out had been blown way out of proportion.

The news that emerged this week has only confirmed that the decision has nothing to do with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and more to do with the Sussex family’s desire to be ‘entirely independent’ in general.

Yes, really. According to Roya Nikkhah, royal correspondent at The Sunday Times, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted to be ‘entirely independent’ from Buckingham Palace – something that was reportedly vetoed by the Queen.

‘They wanted their household to be entirely independent of Buckingham Palace, but were told “no”,’ a royal source told Roya. ‘There is an institutional structure that doesn’t allow that kind of independence. The feeling is that it’s good to have the Sussexes under the jurisdiction of Buckingham Palace, so they can’t just go off and do their own thing.’

Despite reportedly wanting ‘total royal freedom’, Harry and Meghan’s official office will remain at Buckingham Palace while Frogmore Cottage will be their home.

To be honest with their past busy year and their little bump set to arrive next month, they’ve got enough to deal with!

DJ Whoo Kid Collaborates With New Streaming Platform For Independent Hip-Hop Artists

Independent hip- hop artists rejoice. There’s a new platform in town. MyMy Hip Hop is the streaming music platform that allows listeners to discover and help promote new independent hip-hop artists. Popular radio personality on Eminem’s Sirius XM Shade 45 channel, Yves “DJ Whoo Kid” Mondesir is in collaboration with MyMy Hip Hop.

The hope for the platform is to help these emerging talents expand their careers through playlists and a digital voting system. “The artists I’ve discovered on MyMy Hip Hop are 100% legit,” said Whoo Kid.

“By featuring these tracks on my playlist, these artists will get industry exposure to agents, record producers, and some of the top performers in the hip-hop industry.”

MyMy Hip Hop is the only streaming site which utilizes blind judging, allowing listeners to rate randomly-queued tracks without any additional information about the artist that may influence how songs are rated. Top performing tracks and artists are then promoted by the site.

According to a recent release, MyMy Hip Hop, launched in 2017, is the first genre-specific streaming platform from MyMy Music. The goal for the blind judging feature is to eliminate any potential bias related to an artist’s name, appearance, hometown, connections, or any other personal information. Tracks are judged and ranked solely on the merit of the music. The platform is 100% community driven allowing the audience to drive the catalog.

“Hip-hop fans come to our app to listen to the best-undiscovered hip-hop music in the world,” said MyMy Music President Shawn Pouliotte. “When industry veterans like Whoo Kid go to our site in search for hot, new hip-hop tracks, our artists are getting the benefit of exposure they can’t get anywhere else.”

Recently the company added, Jojo Brim, a music industry vet who has headed A&R at Arista Records, Island Def Jam Music Group, Warner Music Group, and was previously the general manager for LaFace Records/Epic Records. He will take over the role as Head of Artist Relations for Hip Hop and R&B.

Over 1,500 of you recommended indie picture houses. Here are the top 10 – in stations, warehouses and rural villages

Campbeltown Picture House on the Kintyre peninsula is amazing. Recently refurbished, it has retained all of its original charm (it has been a functioning cinema since 1913) but is now a welcoming, contemporary space offering two screens and a cafe. Screen 1 will blow you away with its atmospheric ceiling and half-timbered “wee house” features. It shows all the latest releases, great classics and streamed live theatre. It is a fantastic cultural hub in a remote, rural area and testament to the relentless hard work of the volunteers who fund-raised to get the refurbishment project off the ground.
