Inside Coronation Street’s Sam Aston’s farm wedding venue with barn reception and country chic decoration

CORONATION Street star Sam Aston married Briony Gardner today at Stock Farm in Cheshire.

The couple said I Do in front of a star-studded crowd, including his co-stars, at the stunning farm venue, complete with a barn.

Coronation Street’s Sam Aston and Briony Gardner tied the knot today
Instagram

The venue, located in Tatton Estate, chosen by the Coronation Street star offers bespoke wedding packages for couples starting from £4,650.

Guests get exclusive use of the barn but can choose to marry there, which holds up to 350 guests, or in the 18th Century farm house located on the land.

The stunning venue is billed as a blank canvas that allows couples to stamp their own style.

The barn includes a stunning rustic bar and plenty of space to dance the night away under fairy lights.

The farmhouse offers six large rooms for family and guests to stay in.

Food at the venue is provided by top caterers – with guests able to choose from contemporary food, fine dining or grilled food.

It’s unclear where the couple have chosen to hold their ceremony but they have no doubt put their own person touch on it.

Just days ago yoga teacher Briony shared a picture of a box containing their wedding rings engraved with their names and date of the big day.

It was a wooden box that is in keeping with the wooden and rustic feel of the stunning venue.

Sam, 25, – who plays Chesney on the soap, was spotted looking dapper in a dark suit and bow tie as he greeted family and friends this morning before his ceremony.

Alan Halsall and pregnant Brooke Vincent were also seen arriving for the ceremony.

Sam proposed to Briony in June 2017 in front an audience of 250 at a charity event.

He dismissed accusations he was too young to get hitched in an interview with OK!, telling the publication: “We’ve also been together for a long time so it just feels right and I don’t feel like I want to wait.”

Inside Game of Thrones’ Epic, Deadly Battle of Winterfell: Not All Your Favorites Make It Out Alive

Helen Sloan/HBO

It’s almost as if Game of Thrones got this far by subverting what we expect of a fantasy. The series’ most sprawling battle yet, the Battle of Winterfell, kills few of the characters whose sentimental last scenes in “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” seemed like closure before a climactic end. The living, against all odds, succeed in killing the show’s most formidable villain, the Night King, eliminating the army of the dead with him—and upending the show’s final conflict, revealing a stranger, perhaps more ordinary path to the end than the series has led us to expect.

The figure who resets the endgame is the episode’s most triumphant shock: it’s Arya Stark who saves the North, her family, and hope for the living in a last-minute, thrilling reversal, just as the battle is at its bleakest and it seems the Night King has finally taken what he wants.

The force of a dragon fails to do what Arya does with the same Valyrian-steel dagger that belonged to Littlefinger—which he hired the Catspaw assassin to use in attacking Bran Stark seven seasons ago, igniting the war that set the series in motion. Daenerys’s test of dragon fire against the Night King, a hard-won moment in itself that she and Jon nearly die in attempting, just seems to tickle him. Theon Greyjoy is no match, however poetic the Ironborn prince’s last act is in charging straight at the Night King to defend Bran, redeeming an early history of cowardice. No, it’s Arya who lunges in with a roar, landing herself in the Night King’s clutches in a moment that seems like her last—until she drops the dagger Bran gave her, stabs her enemy in a sleight of hand, and shatters him and his army into icy dust.

A Poignant, Private Look Inside Your ‘Neighbor’s Window’

Coutesy Tribeca Film Festival

It has taken a while—nearly two decades of toiling in the low-budget vineyards of documentary moviemaking—but writer-director Marshall Curry is finally going Hollywood.

The 49-year-old Curry, best known for such documentaries as 2005’s Oscar-nominated Street Fight, a gritty account of current presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker’s first (albeit unsuccessful) campaign to be mayor of Newark, N.J., and Point and Shoot, Curry’s unsettling profile of American videographer-turned-Libya freedom fighter Matthew van Dyke, recently signed with William Morris Endeavor in hopes of directing a fictional feature.

Judging by Curry’s maiden effort—a 20-minute short subject, The Neighbors’ Window, which is premiering with multiple screenings over the coming week at the Tribeca Film Festival—he won’t have to wait long.

An Inside Look at Community Living

For an expert look at the benefits of community living, we sat down with Jody Curnow of The Cottages on Osoyoos Lake. The Cottages recently released their last hillside view lots and with home prices ranging from $ 517,900 to over $ 1.4 million making The Cottages Okanagan’s most affordable waterfront community. Jody not only helps future homeowners find the perfect lot for their new home, she is also a homeowner at The Cottages as well!

CANADIAN HOME TRENDS WHAT IS COMMUNITY LIVING?

JODY CURNOW Community living is a fairly broad term used to describe a variety of living arrangements but the one thing they all have in common is that they are based on the idea of a shared lifestyle and amenities. The Cottages is a gated community, designed to be the perfect mix of detached living and community living. Homeowners live in private, detached homes but enjoy a wide variety of shared amenities and community social events.

Wine Tasting Event at The Cottages

CHT WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST DRAW WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNITY LIVING?

JC Community living offers the perfect mix of privacy and access to amenities. The Cottages is a gated community that offers its homeowners access to a private beach and marina, two pools and two hot tubs, a 7,000 square foot community center, a fully equipped exercise room as well as lush lawns and play areas that are maintained for you. These amenities are all located within the gated community. They offer a much quieter and more private environment than public facilities would, but they are maintained by the community staff, allowing you to simply enjoy them without the stress of maintenance and upkeep.

CHT WHAT SHOULD HOMEOWNERS CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A COMMUNITY?

JC While the amenities and lifestyle of the community itself are key to choosing the right community, you should also consider the local area and what is available there in terms of shopping, health care, schools and entertainment. The Cottages feel like a private getaway and yet it is just minutes away from shops, schools, health care, hiking and biking trails, golf courses, snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, a world class motor sport track, restaurants and wineries. Community members have easy access both to a variety of fun experiences but also to daily necessities like groceries or health care. These are important things to consider to ensure you can enjoy your new home without concern or inconvenience.

‘The Haunting of Sharon Tate’: Inside the Crazy Hilary Duff Movie That Desecrates the Dead

Saban Films

The Haunting of Sharon Tate is a movie about fate. Tate, played by Hilary Duff, is kept awake at night by visions of her impending death. Just like the Haunting audience, Tate knows that her murder is inevitable. It happened years ago—a semi-random, terrible slaughter orchestrated by Charles Manson and his cult family. What Manson conceived of at the time as deliberate chaos is now just history—a horrible thing that happened because an evil person willed it into being. Sharon Tate’s death did not usher in the apocalypse, and Charles Manson died in prison. It’s a tragic, pointless story, and it’s the one that Sharon Tate will always be remembered for. The Haunting of Sharon Tate imagines a world in which the actress’s death, and therefore her legacy, was narrowly avoided, imbuing the star with the foresight and agency to predict and prevent her own murder.

Director Daniel Farrands’ conceit reportedly traces back to a tabloid’s claim that Tate had a premonition that she would die a full year before the Manson family invasion. The image of an ill-fated starlet plagued by visions of a disturbing future is a vivid one, but one that a basic sense of courtesy and propriety would prohibit most people from converting into a feature-length film. It’s a thought experiment best suited for private contemplation: a young Sharon Tate pregnant with premonition, bewildered and terrified, as a vision of Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff playing her in a poorly written 2019 snuff film flashes before her eyes.

Throughout the film, Tate repeatedly wonders if fate can be tampered with, or if we’re all “slaves to our own destiny.” The Haunting of Sharon Tate marks a fate so strange, unpredictable, and cruel that no one ever could have seen it coming—but someone probably could have, and should have, stopped it.

Brittany Packnett & Symone Sanders Attacked By White Man Inside A Delta Airport Lounge

Brittany Packnett, Symone Sanders

Source: Tasia Wells/Cindy Ord / Getty

“I’ll be damned if I came all the way to Africa to be attacked[d] by a white man,” Brittany Packnett wrote in a tweet on Friday morning, detailing a terrifying encounter her and political strategist Symone Sanders experienced while waiting to board their flight in Nairobi, Kenya.

Sanders, along with Packnett, asserts that they were attacked by a white man in the Delta SkyClub Lounge at the airport. According to tweets from both, the man reportedly doused Packnett with water, pushed her and attempted to charge at them during the attack on Thursday evening.

Sanders said the trouble began when she respectfully asked the man to quiet down, according to an interview she gave with The Root.

“He was speaking loudly and cursing to someone on the phone,” Sanders said.

“The lounge attendant and two other people asked him to quiet down. I interjected after he was rude to the lounge attendant. I leaned over and said, ‘Pardon me. Will you please keep it down?’” she continued.

She said the man began speaking louder and continuously threw up his middle finger in her direction while they were sitting on the same bench. Sanders said that things escalated after a Black female lounge attendant tried to intervene on their behalf.

“So I get up and ask again, ‘Sir, please. This is ridiculous; no one is being rude to you, and you terrorizing the people in this lounge is not OK.’ He continues giving me the middle finger. … I sit down, and then the flight attendant gets back up. Next thing we know, he jumps up and throws his water at the nearest person (Brittany)—like, drenches her whole body, then pushes her down. He lunges at her, then I jump in to defend her. It was terrifying.”

Sanders identified the name of her attacker as a citizen of the United Kingdom via Twitter and gave an update that he was arrested before they boarded their flight.

According to Tweets from Packnett, men who witnessed the exchange finally intervened after their attacker attempted to lunge at them. Sanders and Packnett both say that it took 30 minutes for police to arrive on the scene. Delta has yet to make a statement regarding the issue, even as the women tagged the airline in their Tweets.

After their Tweets sparked a conversation on social media, Packnett wrote about the atrocities that Black women face in relation to their bodies, while experiencing both physical and psychological trauma. All of it compounded with the knee-jerk reaction of not being believed.

While the women undoubtedly had a live-altering trip in the motherland, we hope that Delta will do right by them on account of the racism and aggression that took place on Thursday night.

Inside the Lawsuit Threatening Rent the Runway’s $1 Billion Business

When CEO Brittany Johnson heard that fashion brands were refusing to sell to her clothing rental startup FashionPass because they had entered into exclusive agreements with Rent the Runway, she felt “almost flattered.”

“[I thought] ‘Whoa, Rent the Runway actually sees us as a competitor? This is crazy!” Johnson told The Daily Beast.

After all, Rent the Runway is a heavyweight in the fledgling industry of clothing subscription services. The model allows customers to book an outfit for a day at a fraction of the retail cost, and return the piece after wearing it once. Just this week, Forbes reported that Rent the Runway, which was founded 10 years ago, had hit $ 1 billion in valuation.

Inside Tanya Burr and Jim Chapman’s £4m divorce with £2m London home and sausage dog Martha

TANYA Burr and Jim Chapman were the ultimate YouTube power couple who carved an incredible career in the early days of vlogging.

Best friends with Zoella and Alfie Deyes, over five million subscribers between them and a fairy tale wedding at an exclusive venue – they had it all.

But twelve years after they first met, the dream is over and yesterday we revealed the couple have called it a day, four years after tying the knot.

Here we take a look inside their £4million divorce…

Tanya Burr and Jim Champan have split after 12 year together
Getty – Contributor

The house

Tanya and Jim met in Norwich, where they are both from, but as their fame and their bank balances grew they decided to relocate to London.

In 2015 they splashed £2million on a four bedroom property with a property in West London.

The pair used to regularly film their videos from the home and often gave tours showing off their décor and designs.

Over the last year the couple have shared less and less of the property and in recent months it seems

Tanya has been staying in the 1,700 square foot home alone, in between travelling the world for work.

The couple live in a £2million house in West London

The fortune and mega brand

Tanya was working on a beauty counter at a department store in Norwich when started her career as a YouTuber in her teens.

She started off by doing make-up tutorials but it wasn’t long until her popularity grew and she branched out doing fashion and baking vlogs.

Jim, who attended the University of East Anglia, saw how well she was doing and launched his own YouTube channel focusing on men’s lifestyle.

In the early days it was reported that they earned around £200 a day just in ad revenue, but they money didn’t stop there.

The couple both monetised wherever they could and it wasn’t long until they were being paid mega bucks to promote big brands.

But while they initially collaborated on things, they branched out on individual ventures and made quite clear individual brands.

Jim is currently the face of Hugo Boss, while he regularly works for the likes of Jaguar.

Tanya has launched various products including a cosmetic brand and books .

In 2016 it was reports that one Tanya Burr Cosmetics product is sold every two minutes in Superdrugs.

Today their joint networth is believed to be worth around £4million.

The couple have made millions over the years – with video, books and endorsements

The Fans

Like fellow YouTube power couple Zoella and Alfie, Tanya and Jim have a huge following.

Fans have followed them since they were in their teens and have watched every step of their transformation into A-listers.

In the early days the pair would vlog almost daily, giving people unprecedented access into their worlds.

The news of their split has hit the loyal subscribers hard and as the pair have started sharing less and less, their popularity could be at risk.

Responding to the news, a lot of fans felt like they had lost a part of their childhood.

One person wrote: “Tanya burr and jim chapman have split up????? Thirteen year old me is shattered.”

Another commented: “I haven’t watched tanya or jim for years now but it’s so so sad that they’ve split. i truly can imagine them to be utterly mature about it but it’s still so sad. weird how people can grow apart as they really were the perfect couple.(sic)”

Tanya is best friends with Zoella

The Friends

Tanya and Jim are part of the close-knit group of YouTubers.

The couple were at the heart of the gang alongside Zoe Sugg and Alfie Deyes.

Their other mates include Marcus Butler, Louise Pentland, Grace Helbig, Tyler Oakley, Joe Sugg, Louis Cole and Caspar Lee.

While the group has changed somewhat since they first started out, the split will no doubt send ripples throughout it.

Just last week Tanya attended the launch of Zoe’s latest make-up launch, but it unclear at this stage if and how they will all manage to remain pals.

The pair have a dog called Martha

The Dog

Tanya and Jim became parents to dog Martha in 2015.

The adorable dachshund regularly features in their vlogs and Instagram posts.

It seems Tanya is currently looking after the dog as she appears in her recent posts.

But there is no doubt the pooch is a big part of both of their lives and she even appeared on a magazine cover with Jim last month, so it looks like shared custody might be the way forward.

Inside the Bookstore That Wants to Gender-Balance Our Bookshelves

A.N. Devers has always had a fondness for unwanted things. As a child, her family moved around the U.S. a lot, following her father’s postings in the Air Force. In each new town, they’d go to yard sales, where Devers would dig through other people’s cast-offs and come up with interesting items to take home.

A few decades later, that talent for spotting the overlooked is the driving force behind her unusual new bookstore, The Second Shelf.

Tucked away in a peaceful courtyard off the busy streets of London’s Soho, the store almost exclusively offers rare books by women authors – a group that has rarely enjoyed the attention, or the price tag, afforded to male writers. Devers, a writer and book dealer, became obsessed with the discrepancy when, at a book fair in 2015, she saw (mostly male) traders relegating titles by renowned female authors like Joan Didion to the lower shelves and, tellingly, selling them for a tiny fraction of the cost of books by their male counterparts. “We don’t value women’s work the same way we do men’s,” Devers says. “It’s depressing. But it’s also exciting, because I can do something about it.”

After Devers, 42, moved from New York to London – “a great town for people interested in rare books” – in 2016, she started meeting other women in the trade. The idea for The Second Shelf began to take shape. A prolific user of social media, Devers marshalled her thousands-strong following into powerful online attention for her project, which she initially intended as an online store. She raised over $ 40,000 on Kickstarter and garnered interest from high-profile figures in the book world.

The Second Shelf opened its reddish pink doors in November. Inside, the walls are papered with the kind of patterned end pages you find in beautiful old books, thousands of which are crammed into tall shelves and dark cabinets. Most are first editions, and many are signed and almost all are by women (a handful of male-authored books about women have made it in). The focus is modern fiction – Elizabeth Bowen novels, romances by Rosamunde Pilcher, poetry by Ntozake Shange. But there’s also travel writing, essays, guidebooks and more. Next year Devers’ first book, Traina non-fiction exploration of trains in American culture published by Bloomsbury — will surely join them.

In collecting these works and promoting them in the Second Shelf’s quarterly review, Devers is hoping to correct a historical imbalance in the book trade that has left women authors forgotten over the years. In the U.K., early bookmen (the term for rare book dealers) were “country gentleman who ran estates, and amassed libraries of books to show their wealth and intelligence,” Devers says. There have been some famous bookwomen, she adds, citing Bella de La Costa Greene, the black woman who built the famous Morgan Library in New York. But for the most part, it has typically been men who decide which books are worth collecting, preserving and passing down to future generations. As in other male-led creative industries of television, film, and the news media, “they focus on themselves,” Devers says.

The effect is a stark absence of women’s work among what society considers to be the most valuable cultural artefacts. In January, the Second Shelf went viral on Twitter after Devers pointed out that only nine books by women appeared in a list, compiled by a trade website, of the 500 biggest sales at auction in the books and paper field in 2018. Even among more recently published works, a 2018 study found that books by women are sold for on average 45% less than books by men. “In a capitalist society, where we put our money shows where we see value. We’ve been taught to find value in something really narrow,” Devers says. “It’s time to explore something different.”

Sarah K. MarrThe Second Shelf opened in November in Smiths Court in London’s Soho district

Devers’ brick-and-mortar shop – made possible by a good deal on the rent from local estate agents – is the physical site of a mostly online movement pushing back against the status quo. (The online store, which Devers promised on her Kickstarter, is on its way). The Second Shelf is named for a 2012 New York Times essay by Meg Wolitzer critiquing the sexist treatment of women’s fiction. Since then, many have promoted the idea of reading only books by women for a year, while student activists have increasingly called on universities to diversify their largely white and male reading lists.

These days she tours rare book fairs in search of hidden gems that have received little attention. The works that fly off the shelves fastest are those by women of color. “If women’s work has been relegated, then that’s even more true for women who aren’t white, which makes it’s hard for my customers to find elsewhere,” she says. The store has twice sold out of works by Nigerian-born novelist Buchi Emecheta. Devers quickly sold 14 first editions of works by Miriam Tlali – the first black South African woman to get published in her country. Devers initially came across her in a charity shop and was shocked she had never heard of her – today she is out of print, even in South Africa. “I can’t keep up with the demand, which means there is a demand. That’s heartening.”

Less heartening is the reaction some people have to Devers’ mission online. While social media helped power the birth of her store and brings in most of her customers, it has also brought trolls who feel free to share their (often offensive) thoughts on a women’s-only bookstore. Devers says it doesn’t happen constantly, but when it does she will often engage to explain the importance of what she’s doing. “Sometimes it’s exhausting, but I disagree with that idea that you can should just ignore them until they go away,” she says. “People say you should, but if you ignore them, there’s no counterpoint.”

Sarah K. MarrMany of the women-authored books in The Second Shelf are signed, and most are first editions.

Some of the trolls are men taking issue with their perceived exclusion from the store. But much of the online abuse The Second Shelf gets comes from TERFs – an acronym for Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists, a group which refuses to include trans women in its definition of women and which many say is more prominent in the British feminist movement. On Twitter, TERFs have taken issue with Devers’ stocking of work by trans writers, such as Welsh historian and travel writer Jan Morris, and model April Ashley, who became one of Britain’s first trans public figures. “I’m aware that I’m operating in intellectually charged times around what gender is,” she says. “But I guess wasn’t prepared for how controversial some people would find it: I sell books by and about women, as they define themselves. I want everyone to be comfortable coming into my store.”

As in any good bookstore, customers stepping on to the pale pink-tiled floor of The Second Shelf are greeted by staff members excited to share their wealth of literary knowledge and recommendations for people at different stages of their book collecting career (there are Penguin Classics for $ 8, newer books by Alison Lurie and Rachel Cusk for $ 25–40, first edition Elizabeth Bowens for around $ 50, right up into the hundreds for work by legends like Virginia Woolf). Devers is no exception, constantly breaking into tangents on her favorite stock items and rattling off the life stories of their authors. “It’s frustrating that there are so many great books out there and no one is looking for them,” she says. Now, at least, we know where to start.

North West’s First Cover Shoot Ignites War Over Child Modeling [Photos Inside]

(Kim Kardashian Instagram)

North West’s first cover shoot has ignited an online debate among fans who are supportive of the 5-year-old’s modeling career, and those who believe the child is being exploited at a young age.

Mom Kim Kardashian revealed North‘s first cover shoot on Friday for the digital magazine, WWD. North was fully dolled up including makeup and even a crop top and posed for multiple photos, while the magazine applauds her for leading the way as a “new generation comes of age.”

According to The Blast, people began immediately criticizing the photos. “She’s beautiful, cover that baby up tho!” one person commented, while another said, “I love you, but if you continue to expose her so young she will end up like Lindsay Lohan by age 13.”

Some people took a softer approach, suggesting to Kim that, “a more natural photoshoot would have been nicer… appropriate to her age and mostly childhood …. less makeup … she’s already beautiful.”

The comments weren’t all negative, as many people applauded Kim and North for the photoshoot, and expressed excitement for the little girl’s big moment.

“North actually enjoys this stuff and it brings her joy. You don’t want to stifle your children’s passion and creativity. You want to expand it. It’s personal growth cultivating at a young age,” one person defended. Many other expressed the sentiment of “you should mind your own business about someone else’s child.”

North has reportedly expressed an interest in fashion which isn’t surprising; she is Kanye’s daughter.

What are your thoughts on the photos?

Inside The Hotel Where Hollywood’s A-List Felt Safe To Misbehave

Michael Ochs Archives/Getty/Photo illustration by The Daily Beast

In 1927, 22-year-old silent film star Clara Bow would tell her protective father she was going to Joan Crawford’s house, then she would drive to the USC campus to pick up her friends on the football team and take them to the secret room she maintained at the Garden of Allah hotel on Sunset Boulevard. Once there, they would party the night away before taking a sunrise dip in the pool.

In 1949, when Ronald Reagan’s first marriage was heading towards divorce, the future president moved into the hotel, where his lifestyle of drinking, partying, and getting lucky with the ladies once led him to comment that he couldn’t always remember his overnight guests’ names.

In the 1950s, Marilyn Monroe and her crew of fellow starlets decamped to the favored hotel haunt to spend long nights on the dance floor drinking, smoking, and enjoying the fruits of celebrity.

From Blocks To Bucks: How An 18-year-old Gamer Built a Business Inside Minecraft

Working in video games is a dream for many players, a way to turn their passions into a viable career and feed back into a community and industry that has delivered them years of entertainment.

At a glance, Jamie Freeburn might appear to be another such aspiring young developer. However, rather than setting out to make a game from scratch and battling through an already crowded indie scene, the 18-year-old creator has found success in another area: the Minecraft Marketplace.

Freeburn is the central figure behind PixelSquared, a studio making content packs for Mojang‘s endlessly popular sandbox title. The team, with members based in countries including Northern Ireland, Chile, America, England, and Denmark, creates and sells add-ons for the main game on the curated storefront, with content ranging from cosmetic skins for characters, to custom maps delivering intricate and beautiful new worlds for players to explore, and even unique gameplay modes.

STARTING SANDBOX

So how did Freeburn start making money through Minecraft? “I got into the game about 7 years ago, so I think I was 11, in high school. Back then I was really into creative-style games, games where I could create my own things, and me and few of my friends were chatting about that and one of them thought of Minecraft,” Freeburn says. “I bought the game a week after that and sunk in so many hours, just building and building things.”

Freeburn realised early on there was a market for original Minecraft content, creating aesthetic overhauls for the game on an ad hoc basis. Then came the announcement, in October 2017, that Mojang was launching the Marketplace as a dedicated hub for user creators.

“I was instantly into the idea,” says Freeburn. “Before that, I had created skins on commission on Fiverr, and I was pretty active in that community, so I thought ‘Hey, I may as well send my portfolio in, see how it goes’.”

Microsoft responded positively to the work Freeburn submitted and was keen to sign him up for the new content platform. There were only two problems – the first being that Jamie was only 17 at the time, too young to legally be responsible for what needed to be a registered business. The second was that his parents had no idea what he was up to.

The 'good vs evil' Demon Hunters pack was a Halloween creation, tapping into Minecraft's hellish Nether
The ‘good vs evil’ Demon Hunters pack was a Halloween creation, tapping into Minecraft’s hellish Nether

“They were extremely surprised, as they had no prior knowledge that I did any of this before I told them. They didn’t even know what the whole Fiverr thing was,” he recalls. “I called up my dad and said ‘Hey, Microsoft wants to sign me on this contract to create content with them.’ and he was like ‘Oh! That’s nice.’ Then he took a look at the contract and realised it was serious.”

After a father-son meeting with Microsoft, explaining what the Minecraft Marketplace was and what Jamie would be doing on it, his dad signed on, allowing Jamie himself to get started on the fun stuff – making the actual content, and leaving his mark on the game. For his first pack, Freeburn revamped an early space-themed skin set, upgrading helmet and torso designs to a much higher standard. Since then, PixelSquared has released over 30 original packs, and picked up over a dozen staff members.

BUILDING A BUSINESS

“It sounds like a big deal but we treated it very organically – we didn’t just get 14 people all of a sudden,” Freeburn says. “Around December 2017, we had six other people who were mostly artists, and after that we took on a build team. We hired a structure artist a few months ago and an organic artist just recently. We only really hire people when we need people, we don’t bring people on for the sake of it.”

When it comes to developing new content for Minecraft, the studio operates more like a group of friends discussing what they think would be cool to have in the game. “We’re a really relaxed studio when it comes to our ideas, so when one of us gets an idea we’ll come together and discuss it, and then draw up an idea for the skin pack,” Freeburn says.

As the team has grown, its begun to undertake some light market research for content plans, although it’s more in the form of seeing what the player community might be interested in, rather than some kind  of hyper-precise targeting of current trends.

“Occasionally we will do surveys to see what skins people want to see,” Freeburn explains. “Around Christmas last year, I put out a survey with a couple of different themes I had in mind just to see which one got the most interest. Our three main things are surveys, seeing what’s [already] on the store, and checking what players are actually using.”

“For example the Teens! skin pack was made mostly on market research, and we did a lot of research into fashion and such,” he continues, “but if you look at Frontiers, by me, that’s more of a passion project. We have a pretty fun mix of things we like to create and stuff based on what the market will like.”

Having turned 18 and assumed ownership of the company from his father, Freeburn has built the business to the point where it’s doing well enough to put him through university and even pay off another member’s student debt, too.

“I’m doing a game design course at college level right now, but next year I’ll be doing university,” he says. “PixelSquared has afforded me [the opportunity] to do that, [and] that’s actually why I decided to go to uni in the first place. A few other people in the studio used PixelSquared to fund their own university education. One, Olivia, recently finished her degree and she’s now able to help pay off her student loan.”

While creating for Minecraft Marketplace, running the company, and preparing for university can be a tough balancing act, Freeburn says “both my college and my parents are very supportive. If I’m struggling with the workload from my college I’ll let my teacher know and they’ll give me some extra time or help me stay on track, and my parents are also pretty okay with me staying up late making sure everything is running fine in the studio.”

CRAFTING A FUTURE

While the company is still growing at a solid pace, Freeburn is also preparing for potential upheaval due to Brexit. With the UK currently scheduled to leave the European Union on 29th March 2019, the company’s international, digital business model could be affected.

“My town is actually directly on the border of Northern Ireland and Ireland [so] we’ll have to see what happens there,” he says, “but I think we’re all concerned. It’s hard to tell how it’s going to affect us all directly – I’m fairly new to the industry so I don’t know what it was like years ago. I joined during the Brexit scandal so I can’t really tell what it was like before [but] we’re a pretty global studio. It’ll be a bit of a nightmare I think. I can’t say too much for sure but I feel like it could impact us.”

The apocalypse is here, in custom Minecraft form
The apocalypse is here, in custom Minecraft form

While waiting to see how the political issue unfolds, PixelSquared is focusing on what it does best – building on its core offerings, but aiming for an even larger scale.

“Maps are our current big target,” Freeburn says. “We have three pretty major maps underway right now, that we’re very excited about, and texture packs too. Our main goal is to expand. Dedicated servers are pretty far away, but we have looked into it – it won’t be for a long time because they’re a big undertaking, but we’d love to do it.”

While creating for Minecraft has proven a highly successful way into the games industry for Freeburn and company, in the longer term plans are afoot to leave a deeper mark on the industry. The ambition is to grow PixelSquared into a studio capable of producing its own original games, but bring with it the recognition of players from the Marketplace community. As for what type of games players might see from a wholly independent PixelSquared?

“In the future, we’d like to branch off and make our own little indie game,” Freeburn says. “We’re all pretty big into games like Binding of Isaac and Rogue Legacy, so essentially we’d like to break away from Minecraft and create our own fully-fledged version of those games.”
