The Weekend Reset: A great food hack, a new Beck track and why the internet is wack.

It’s Friday. Looking for something to switch up your weekend, or to give you an excuse to relax a little? That’s what the Weekend Reset is for. Each week contributor Tim Johnstone pulls together five things to get your weekend started. Could be something to read or watch, something to eat or listen to, or even something to do. Enjoy the weekend fellas.

READ: The Internet of all things is fake, mostly.

But you probably already guessed that? This explains how this comes to be. And it is as depressing as you might imagine. We are nearing the point where there are more bots than actual people on the web and that is where things like Skynet catch up with us. Fascinating (and depressing) stuff. Anytime I hear about how many streams a band has, or video views, I understand that those numbers are mostly meaningless. It’s all about cheating money out of people.

WATCH: Because sometimes Jenga just isn’t enough fun…

First things first: I am still catching up on movies released last year. And occasionally I end up watching something with friends I had skipped for whatever reason. Game Night is one of those movies. It had surfaced on streaming services recently and I finally got around to watching it the other night. I ended up watching it again the next day. If you have ever done game nights with your crew then this is immediately relatable. Until it isn’t. This is a clever, funny, fast paced movie that really works because the acting ensemble shines (Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are so good here) and the characters are genuine. And yes, sometimes you will have to rewind things just to catch lines that you missed. It’s worth it.

EAT: An overnight one-pot chicken to eat off all week.

Yes, there is the multi-paragraph origin tale before you get to the helpful parts. And yes, you are looking at a picture of how you should plan meals around said chicken. Ultimately, it is literally a bird in a pot. Nonetheless, for myself, this is kind of a game changer. It makes it easier to get more out of the chicken, especially if you need protein for the week ahead. There’s that. And the fact that you get a broth out of the whole deal is kind of a big deal.

CREATE: Yeah, you can. This suggests you should.

I have no doubt that this isn’t the sort of thing that will resonate with everyone. But, for many of you it might spark a change you’ve been thinking about or looking for. If nothing else, it serves as a reminder about the importance of art in our civilization.

LISTEN: This is not your grandfather’s Beck.

I’ve had this on repeat for a couple days now. This is not “Loser” Beck. It’s not “Up All Night” Beck. Or “Lost Cause” Beck. It’s a cover of an obscure 1982 b-side that would find a bigger audience via This Mortal Coil. And by bigger audience, I mean artsy introverted liberal arts majors who bought anything that came out on the 4AD record label. The This Mortal Coil version (which Beck pretty much replicates) remains one of my favorite songs from that era for reasons which are impossible for me to convey. It’s all hormones and melancholy. This song has been released as part of an upcoming collection of songs inspired by the Oscar nominated movie Roma, which is on Netflix.

The Joy of This Gymnast’s Floor Routine Is Reverberating Across the Internet. Here’s What to Know

If you’re a talented gymnast vaulting extremely high in the air in your immaculate floor routine, and your spirits are even higher, people notice.

So when UCLA shared a video of NCAA champion gymnast Katelyn Ohashi handily earning a perfect 10 score with her gymnast routine to Michael Jackson medley at Saturday’s Under Armor’s 2019 Collegiate Challenge, she got a whole lot of praise from some pretty high-profile people via Twitter.

In the clip, UCLA’s Katelyn Ohashi made sticking a flawless landing after nailing three backflips and landing into a split look like pure fun, and the crowd lapped it up. She did it all with unbridled joy and a million-watt smile to the tune of songs like Jackson’s “I Want You Back,” and Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation.”

That ability has lead the video to garner more than 15 million views of Monday morning, more views than Los Angeles has people.

You’ll want to orient yourself with her athletic career.

Ohashi moonwalked into tying for first place at last year’s Pac-12 Championships with a routine that earned a 9.95 out of 10 on the scorecard, and resulted in a video that got 90 million views. That was her personal best to beat, UCLA coach Valorie Kondos Field told the Los Angeles Times.

She’s since proven she has a cheery online presence, laughing at some of the major shoutouts.

The elite floor exercise athlete competes on the college level. She had originally set her sights on the Olympics, but decided to leave that behind according to The Players’ Tribune. “There was a time where I was on top of the world, an Olympic hopeful,” she explained during the video. “I was unbeatable, until I wasn’t.”

But that hasn’t stopped her from wowing millions of new fans.

According to her official UCLA website bio, the Katelyn Ohashi floor routine, as it is now known, was by no means the first perfect 10 score for the six-time all-American — and two were on the beam.

See some reactions to her latest triumph below.

The Internet Loses It After Singer Says He’s ‘The King Of R&B’

Singer Jacquees is very popular among millennials and teens for his covers of Ella Mai’s Trip and Boo’d Up – in fact, his version of Mai’s songs were popular that her team had them pulled.

Also, his album 4275 has received millions of streams, he has a loyal following on social media and not to mention, his 2016 smash single B.E.D.

However, we’re not sure if that is enough to support his huge claim. He says he’s the King of R&B.

Instagram Photo

As you already could guess, the internet went wild. But the loudest naysayers were veteran R&B singers who said not so fast young man.

Tank quickly hopped on Instagram to say R. Kelly is the king:

Shortly after he posted a graphic that named him in the top five of R&B kings:

It’s a solid list but where’s Ne-yo?! And what’s the criteria because Maxwell, Joe, Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, and a litany of others are somewhere shuddering.

Tank wasn’t the only singer to speak up.  Of course, Tyrese had something to say:

John Legend went with the PC response:

Long-forgotten singer, J. Holiday spoke up:

And of course, Kevin Hart bought some humor to the conversation:

Since the original post, Jacquees has not backed down from the claim. In his defense, he may be talking about artists in his generation but none-the-less, this was a smart marketing tool because he’s trending and people who had no idea who he was is now talking about him.

Who do you think is the current king of R&B? Let us know in the comments.

Ralph Breaks the Internet Wins the Weekend Box Office for Third Straight Week

(NEW YORK) — On a quiet weekend at the box office, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” was No. 1 for the third straight week, while the upcoming DC Comics superhero film “Aquaman” made a huge splash in Chinese theaters.

With no new wide releases, Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” again led in domestic ticket sales with an estimated $ 16.1 million. The animated sequel has grossed more than $ 140 million in three weeks.

Another holdover, “The Grinch,” trailed in second with $ 15.2 million in its fifth weekend.

But the weekend’s biggest new arrival was in China, where Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman” debuted with $ 93.6 million in ticket sales.

That marked a new record for a DC title in China and ranks fourth all-time for superhero films.

‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ runs up score on clever plot

It’s often said that the best animated movies play equally well with adults and children, while bad ones prove an ordeal for kid-squiring parents. If anything, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” bends in the opposite direction: The colorful action should delight tykes, but the smart, media-savvy asides make it especially appealing to grownups.

The Worlds of 'Ralph Breaks the Internet'
